Price hike, scarcity fears heighten over PENGASSAN, Dangote face-off

    • Depots raise petrol price to N980 per litre
    • Union orders cut of gas, crude supply to refinery
    • Dangote accuses PENGASSAN of economic sabotage
    • Company resumes petrol sale in naira after FG intervenes

After the celebrated feat of eradication of fuel scarcity in the country in the last two years, the queues may return anytime soon except the federal government makes a quick intervention. Yesterday, the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) ordered its seven branches to cut off crude oil and gas supplies to the $20 billion, 650,000 barrels per day Dangote Refinery and Petrochemical facility located in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos.

PENGASSAN’s directive was in response to Dangote Refinery laying off 800 Nigerian workers.

While the Refinery’s management explained the  exercise as “part of an ongoing reorganisation to protect the facility from repeated acts of sabotage that had raised safety concerns and hampered operations,” the organised labour said it is an “act of anti-labour practices.”

In a letter dated September 26 and signed by its General Secretary, Lumumba Okugbawa, the union accused the refinery’s management of firing its members in retaliation for exercising their constitutional right to join the union.

In a memo signed by Okugbawa, and issued to branch chairmen in TotalEnergies, Renaissances, Chevron, Shell Nigeria Gas, Oando and Seplat Producing Nigeria Unlimited, the union directed the immediate shutdown of all valves and suspension of all crude loading operations to the Dangote Refinery facility.

“As you are aware, the Management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has disengaged our members in reaction to the exercise of their constitutional right to be unionised.

“They have gone further on a mission of misinformation and propaganda to justify this illegitimacy rather than engaging meaningfully with us to right the wrong.

“Consequent to these, you are hereby directed to cut off gas supply to NGIC effective immediately. All crude oil supply valves to the Refinery should be shut.

The loading operation for the vessel headed there should be halted immediately,” the directive read.

The union further mandated the NGIC Chairman to ensure strict compliance with the order and told all branch chairmen to give regular updates on the action taken.

“NGIC Chairman, ensure that gas supply to the Refinery is cut off effective immediately. All chairmen on this summons are to report promptly the progress of the directive.

“Kindly accept the assurances of our highest esteem. Thank you,” the statement read.

The union also threatened to picket the refinery if the situation was not addressed.

Dangote Refinery however warned that the directive by PENGASSAN to cut crude oil and gas supplies to the refinery could plunge Nigerians into fresh rounds of fuel scarcity while inflicting huge revenue losses on the government.

Dangote: No law gives PENGASSAN right to cut off gas, crude oil supplies

In a statement released by the firm yesterday, the refinery described the directive as “criminal, reckless and an act of economic sabotage” that, if enforced, would disrupt the production and nationwide supply of critical petroleum products, including petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, kerosene, and cooking gas.

The company stressed that these products are indispensable to daily life and the economy, warning that Nigerians at every level from households to businesses and industries would bear the brunt of shortages.

It noted that a sudden disruption in supply will translate into insufferable hardship for millions of Nigerians.

“The products that would be disrupted and stopped include but are not limited to aviation fuel, petrol, kerosene, diesel and cooking gas – all products that are used and required by all stripes of Nigerians and persons living in Nigeria, whether high and mighty or lowly and ordinary.

“In what circumstance would it be justified for PENGASSAN to so disrupt and introduce insufferable hardship into the living conditions of Nigerians? None that we can see.

“The follow-up question is, in whose interest and on whose behalf is PENGASSAN directing and intending to inflict such anarchic and criminal disruption upon the Nigerian society and persons living in Nigeria? Most certainly not in the interest of the Nigerian State and/or the Nigerian public and citizens,” the company said.

Beyond the immediate hardship on citizens, Dangote Refinery warned that the government’s revenue would also be dented, given the refinery’s status as one of the country’s largest taxpayers and contributors to both federal and state coffers.

The company said any pause in operations would stall contributions to the national purse and undermine investor confidence in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

The statement noted: “This is also economic sabotage against the Nigerian State at multiple levels.

“Dangote Refinery is the only refinery of its type in Africa and ordinarily should be the pride of all Nigerians as well as the governments of Nigeria.

“It should ordinarily have special protection and status and indeed qualifies as a strategic national asset.”

It added that an irreparable injury to the Dangote Refinery such as PENGASSAN has directed constitutes a national embarrassment to the country and a disincentive to external investors who ordinarily would have been encouraged by the success of Dangote Refinery to contemplate investing in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector or generally.

“PENGASSAN may also not be aware that Dangote Refinery is one of the largest contributors to the revenue purse of the Nigerian governments – both federal and sub-nationals.

“That contribution is currently threatened by PENGASSAN and would of course be paused if and as soon as and for as long as the PENGASSAN directive is implemented by its branches,” it noted.

The statement also noted that PENGASSAN had no legal authority to interfere in supply contracts between the refinery and its vendors, insisting that the action undermined the rule of law.

“Absolutely no law gives PENGASSAN the right to direct its branches to “cut off” gas and crude oil supplies to Dangote Refinery or at all.

“There is also no law in our statute books that would support or enable the PENGASSAN branches having to “cut off” gas and crude oil supplies to Dangote Refinery or at all.

“Besides, it constitutes a criminal conduct for PENGASSAN or its members to disrupt and/or interfere howsoever in the contract between Dangote Refinery and its various vendors for the supply of gas and crude oil to the Refinery.

“Those supply contracts were not entered into with PENGASSAN; they were entered into by Dangote Refinery with third party vendors and suppliers and PENGASSAN has no right whatsoever to disrupt and/or interfere with the performance of those contracts.”

Calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to act swiftly, the refinery urged Nigerians to take note of the “unquantifiable and irredeemable hardship which PENGASSAN wishes to inflict on all of us” if not checked, warning that fuel queues, energy shortages and price hikes could quickly resurface.

It urged PENGASSAN to submit to amicable and legal resolution and not resort to economic sabotage and mob action that could introduce mayhem and chaos and easily translate into anarchy.

Stakeholders are worried over the development, warning of its dire consequences on the country’s economy.

For instance, Dangote Refinery, it is believed, has been the stabilising factor in premium motor spirit (PMS) or petrol supply and steady availability in the country.

Presently, on a daily basis, the refinery produces lighter products of 104 million litres- 57 million litres of petrol; 20 million litres of jet fuel and 27 million litres of diesel. 44 per cent of these volumes can meet the entire requirements of Nigeria while 56 per cent of the production is exported.

This production capacity is sufficient to meet 100 per cent of Nigeria’s local demand for refined petroleum products.

The facility, according to Aliko Dangote, had exported 1.1 litres of petrol in the last three months. Nigeria’s daily petrol consumption is put at between 46 million litres and 50 million litres.

But notwithstanding the refinery’s capacity to meet local demands, Nigeria’s fuel import reliance rose to 71 per cent of total petrol consumed domestically in the month of May and June, 2025. The remaining 28.62 per cent was sourced from the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

By implication, marketers, who should access products locally, are instead spending foreign exchange to import refined petroleum products.

This was contained in data released by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA) in its July report presented to Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC). NMDPRA is the downstream regulator of the oil sector.

The report further gave a breakdown which indicated that in the period, the petrol consumed amounted to total of 1.478 billion litres. Of this total, only 455,188,512 litres was sourced from local refineries, leaving 1.023,128,233 to importation.

The 1.478 billion litres of petrol consumed in June was a 16.42 per cent decrease from 1.768 billion litres supplied in May.

The report also indicated that the average daily petrol supply for the month was 49.277 million litres, of which 34.104 million litres was imported and 15.172 million sourced from local refineries.

The total Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) consumed for the month was 432,180, 605 litres. This is 1.73 per cent higher than 424,829, 199 consumed in the month of May.

Of the total 432,180, 605 litres consumed in June, 378,130,852 was imported while 58,049,753 was from local refineries.

Similarly, the average daily supply was 14,406,020 litres, of which 12,604,372 was imported and 1,801, 658 was locally sourced.

    Union overreaching itself —Experts

But stakeholders still maintained that notwithstanding these figures, PENGASSAN’s directive to shut gas and crude supply to Dangote refinery would still have a telling effect on the economy and by extension motorists. Besides, they cautioned that the unions may be overreaching with their actions.

The Chief Executive Officer, Centre for the Promotion of Private Enterprise (CPPE), Dr. Mud Yusuf, said the idea of going to cut off gas supply, coal supply to Dangote is a disproportionate response to this particular development.

“We are talking here about issues of energy security. We are also talking about what exactly is in consonance with labour laws. If there are issues with an employer, I think there are processes to go about it.

“There are processes of resolving disputes. You have industrial courts, you have other processes. This particular step, for me, is going to the extreme. I don’t think that is the way to go.

“In all of these issues, you never can tell what the motive is, because most of these people, including the unions, these are people who have been major beneficiaries of the importation regime.

“The coming into the industry of Dangote Refinery normally has created a lot of disruption and those who are benefiting from the status quo, including even some of these unions, are not likely to be happy with it.

“But what is more important in all of this is to ensure that due process is followed even by the unions. I don’t think the next thing to do is to go and be shutting gas pipeline or crude supply.

“This will also impact on contractual obligations between Dangote and the suppliers of these inputs.

“I don’t think they (PENGASSAN) need to go as far as that. I think there are better ways of resolving these disputes without creating an energy crisis for the country,” Dr.Yusuf said.

Although he agreed the suppliers can claim force majeure in the event that Dangote decides to take action against them for not supplying him the raw materials as agreed, Yusuf said the Unions may have even committed an act of illegality.

“They may have committed an act of illegality by going as far as that. It is a disproportionate response from the union to Dangote.

“I’m not saying they cannot engage in a dispute, but to go as far as that is disproportionate. It’s going to the extreme, because if the company gets force majeure, losses must have been suffered on both sides.

“This is clearly a disruption inflicted by the union deliberately. So I’m not even sure whether that can qualify as force majeure. It can qualify as sabotage. That is what it’s going to look like,” Yusuf warned, adding that “there is need to interrogate the legality of even what they are doing, because there are rules guiding labour actions.

“There are rules guiding the way you can also express your grievances, even as a union. I’m not sure that this particular step is covered in terms of what is legally permissible. You know, on that, you know, I doubt it and if it is found to be illegal, then there have to be consequences.

“We need to send a signal that nobody is above the law. I mean, you have the Ministry of Labour, you have the industrial courts. That is why they are there to resolve labour disputes.

“Of course, there is a major risk of disruption to petrol and fuel supply to the country because Dangote refinery is a major supplier of petrol and fuel.

“It’s a major supplier; it will disrupt the flow of supply of petrol and fuel and that will not be good for the country,” Yusuf concluded.

Company resumes petrol sale in naira after FG’s intervention

Meanwhile, Dangote Refinery late yesterday resumed petrol sale in naira after announcing its suspension on Friday.

The Chief Branding and Communications Officer, Dangote Group, Tony Chiejina, in a message to The Nation, said the resumption followed the intervention of the Naira for Crude Technical Committee chairman.

The resumption of the sales in naira was contained in an email to its customers yesterday night.

The notice signed by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals and titled ‘Resumption Suspension of DPRP PMS Naira Sales’, read: “Following the intervention of the Naira for Crude Technical Committee chairman, we are pleased to inform you of the resumption of the supply of PMS sales in naira commencing immediately.

“You may kindly proceed to place your orders in naira for both self collection and free delivery of PMS to the earlier advised locations across the country.”

Depots raise petrol price to N980 per litre

Owing to PENGASSAN’s directive to its members to cut crude oil and gas supply to Dangote Refinery yesterday, the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) increased their Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol rate to N980 per litre from N880 per litre.

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) National President Alhaji Abubakar Maigandi, broke the news to The Nation on phone.

“The depot owners have started jacking up their prices. I learnt that they are selling PMS N970 to N980 from N870 and N880.

“Formerly, it was N820 and N825, but now they are selling N870 to N880,” he said.

The IPMAN boss appealed to PENGASSAN to consider the negative impact their actions would cause the economy and rescind the decision to stop crude and gas supply to the refinery.

He described the supply from the refinery to the domestic market as huge, although he could not readily state the quantity and percentage.

His words: “We are appealing to PENGASSAN not to cut the supply of crude oil and gas to Dangote because it will affect the economy.

“We are appealing to them to look at another way of resolving their differences between the association and Dangote management.

“This is because anything that will shortchange the economy is not good.

“The supply of Dangote to the Nigeria’s market is huge. He is the key distributor of petroleum products in the country.”

Similarly, the Natural Oil and Gas Suppliers Association of Nigeria (NOGASA) National Public Relations Officer, Chief Chinedu Ukadike, said the industrial action will culminate in petroleum products scarcity.

According to him, the masses will bear the pains of the refinery and union unrest.

He said Dangote Refinery has been the sole supplier of petrol in the country in the last two months.

The NOGASA spokesman said: “Definitely, it will amount to scarcity, so we want to appeal that the government should step in so that the masses will not suffer.

“I don’t think there has been importation of products in the last two months. Dangote has been the one supplying the products.”

On the other hand, however, the Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) National President, Dr. Billy Hary, said Dangote refinery supplies only 31 per cent of national consumption of the product.

He said the petroleum products market has been on the downward trend in the last few weeks as the retail outlets are dry.

He advised Dangote to settle its scores with PENGASSAN, stressing that it is harmful for the refinery to fight the government, International Oil Companies (IOCs) and stakeholders all within a year of operation.

  • 2027: Jonathan, David Mark disagree on ADC ticket

2027: Jonathan, David Mark disagree on ADC ticket

    • Jonathan: assure me that I’ll be the candidate
    • Mark: Presidential ticket is open to all
    • Obi also wants assurance he’ll be picked
    • Atiku set to formally join party, declare ambition

The closed door meeting between former President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Chairman of African Democratic Congress (ADC), Senator David Mark, in Abuja on Thursday was all about Jonathan’s ambition to return to office as president in 2027, The Nation investigation has revealed.

But the former president’s desire to secure the ticket of the coalition party may have experienced a hitch as Mark pointedly told him that the only way his dream of picking the party’s ticket could materialise was to formally join it and also take part in a fair and transparent presidential primary.

With Jonathan failing to get a commitment from the party’s national chairman, the two statesmen agreed to “meet soon to review the matter.”

The Nation investigation revealed that not only Jonathan but also former vice president Atiku Abubakar and former presidential candidate of Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi all want a definite commitment from the party on their presidential aspiration, but the new party leadership is not forthcoming.

The development is said to have accounted for their delay in pitching their tents with the ADC.

The Nation findings revealed that any commitment the three presidential aspirants make to ADC could be “fatal” for their ambition if they fail to get the party’s ticket.

They fear that committing themselves to the party without securing its presidential ticket could leave them “stranded or stuck politically”.

Jonathan’s audience with Mark, a source said, could be an indication that the former president is “not keen on running on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) because the main opposition party has become too toxic”.

Insiders in ADC said the coalition is shaky because some leaders of the party are actually not ready for change in 2027.

One of them said about 65 to 70 per cent of ADC is in the firm control of Atiku, adding that what they are offering Obi is to be running mate. “No leader in the party is bold enough to ask Atiku to concede the presidential slot to Obi or Jonathan,” the source said.

It noted that Obi has been consistent in telling ADC leaders that power must remain in the South for eight years for the sake of equity, which is why he pledged to do one term if elected president.

The source added: “The supporters of Obi and Jonathan are insistent that presidency must remain in the South in 2027. We don’t know which doctrine Mark will come up with.

“As part of an unwritten deal, Obi has assured repeatedly that he won’t contest presidential primary election with Atiku or any election against Atiku in Adamawa State.

“He also said he will be on the presidential election ballot in 2027. It means technically, they cannot be in the same party except Atiku sacrifices his ambition.

“Obi has also said if he was Atiku’s vice presidential candidate in 2019, there is nothing bad if Atiku is magnanimous to allow him one term in 2027.”

The source noted, however, that Obi has a major problem with his supporters who have asked him not to be deputy to any presidential aspirant. Hence he finds it difficult to go back to them to say he has changed his mind as doing so will be politically suicidal.

Jonathan, the source said, fits the bill as a compromise candidate, but his strong base used to be the South-East which is now the political fortress of Obi.

He said some Northern leaders want Jonathan to spend one term in the office (the only constitutional limit left for him), but there are two hurdles before him, namely getting the ticket a la carte (on a platter of gold) and securing the overwhelming backing of the North.

“With Atiku’s control of ADC, it will be difficult for Jonathan to get ADC mandate.

“Atiku has not formally joined ADC because he was said to be doing his homework. He does not want to be betrayed like the case in PDP.

“He has invested a lot in ADC and presidential aspirants like ex-Governor Rotimi Amaechi can turn the table.”

Another source said: “It is not a bed of roses in ADC. The coalition is shaky.”

    Situation in Jonathan’s camp

A highly-placed source, who was privy to what transpired between Mark and Jonathan, said the ADC National Chairman ruled out automatic ticket for any aspirant.

Mark’s response was said to be “not too convincing” for Jonathan and his strategists.

The source said: “His host was pleased to welcome him to his residence. He told him to join ADC if he wants to contest.

“It was clear at the meeting that PDP is not a likely option because of the plethora of cases and infighting.

“So far, the only option for Jonathan is to join ADC.

Read Also: Jonathan: To run or not to run?

“Mark was, however, quick to tell him that there will be fair and transparent primary election.”

Asked of the meeting’s outcome, the source added: “They would meet in due course to review the matter.

“I think the outcome of the ongoing consultations by Jonathan will determine whether he will contest or not.”

Atiku to declare for ADC soon

Responding to a formal enquiry from our correspondent, ex-VP Atiku Abubakar said he would not put the cart before the horse.

He said it was taken for granted that he would join the ADC.

He said he was preoccupied with building the party before joining in Jada Ward, Adamawa State.

The spokesman for Atiku, Mr. Paul Ibe, made the position of the VP known to our correspondent in Abuja.

He said: “Atiku Abubakar is a committed and active member of the coalition ADC.

“Alongside other leaders, he has been vigorously working to plant structures and build a formidable platform that can liberate Nigerians from the urban bandits presently holding the country hostage.

“The process is well underway and will culminate in him formally collecting his ADC membership card at his ward in Jada, Adamawa State.

“Meanwhile, his focus remains on consolidating the party’s strength across the state.”

On directive to party leaders and members to leave their paties, Ibe said: “Atiku fully supports the directive without reservation.”

The ex-VP said he was not afraid of presidential primary election with other contestants.

He added: “What matters to Atiku and other coalition leaders is building a strong and credible platform to serve Nigerians. They are not putting the cart before the horse.

“His commitment is to safeguarding our democracy, which is under siege under Tinubu’s government.

“Once this disastrous administration is gone, the salvation of the economy will take centre stage.

“The former Vice President has said he will run and encourages others to join the contest.

“But he is not putting the cart before the horse.

“The distraction about who is running and who is not is a ploy of the Tinubu-led APC to divide the opposition.

“We shall not be deceived, and we shall not fall for their tricks.”

Obi weighing options, consolidating political leverage

More than any leader in ADC, Obi is consolidating his grip on the South-East and reaching out to other ethnic groups.

He is also ahead of others in the social media for mobilisation for 2027 which may or may not translate to huge votes for him.

While he is still first rated among the Igbo, the low voters’ registration in his political enclave was a cause for worry.

Investigation revealed that most ADC leaders see Obi as an asset for representing a bloc in the country, but they are trying to persuade him to accept the VP slot.

A source said: “We believe he has the moral pedigree to lead Nigeria now than other aspirants in ADC.

“His greatest headache in ADC is the offer of VP, which his supporters are opposed to.

“When you look at the political matrix, he cannot go it alone as a presidential candidate.

“Again, the party platform is not there except ADC, which he is cautious about.

Fresh crisis hits PDP as Damagum, Anyanwu forward conflicting letters to INEC

    • Chairman, Secretary differ over Plateau, Cross River, Kebbi state congresses
    • Legal implications threaten outcome of national convention
    • Party considers new date to end sale of nomination forms

A fresh crisis is brewing within the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which may have grave implications for the party’s November 15-16 national convention in Ibadan, The Nation has learnt.

Sources close to the party’s National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Ilyas Damagum, and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, confirmed at the weekend that the two party leaders have fired conflicting memos to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over party congresses in three states where contending interests are seeking to determine party leadership and gather delegate votes.

“The implications may not be too good for our party’s future as ongoing frictions over few state congresses can get the scheduled national convention or its outcome all trussed up in serious litigations that can hamper hopes of early preparations for the 2027 elections,” a federal lawmaker told our correspondent.

Findings indicate that after a meeting with few party leaders in his house, Damagum sent a letter to INEC on Thursday, September 25, stating that state congresses scheduled for Saturday, September 27, 2025 in Cross River, Plateau and Kebbi states had been postponed due to “unforeseen circumstances and operational logistic challenges.”

Damagum’s letter indicated that the decision to postpone state congresses in the three states was that of the PDP National Working Committee.

He also stated that a new date would be determined and communicated to INEC in due course.

“The National Working Committee of our great party hereby postpones the state congresses in Cross River, Plateau and Kebbi states. A new date will be communicated to the Commission,” he stated.

However, the following day, Friday, 26th September, PDP National Secretary Anyanwu, who did not attend the meeting with Damagum, countered with another letter to INEC indicating that state congresses will proceed as scheduled in the three states and asked that Damagum’s letter be ignored by INEC.

Emphasising legal provisions in the Electoral Act and the party’s constitution, Anyanwu asserted that any purported party correspondence to INEC without the signatures of both the National Chairman and National Secretary is of no effect whatsoever.

He further told INEC that in view of earlier effective communication by the party, the party congress in the three states will go on as scheduled.

“This is to confirm to the Commission that the congress will hold as originally scheduled and has not been postponed. The earlier letter signed by the National Chairman should be ignored,” Anyanwu stated.

There are concerns that if the contending interests on either side fail to resolve the issue, delegates from the affected states may approach the courts to either stop the national convention or invalidate its outcome on the basis that they were unduly prevented from exercising their right to vote.

Party considers new date to end sale of nomination forms

Amidst ongoing power dynamics as the opposition party prepares for its November 15-16 national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, the party’s National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) has shifted the deadline for some activities indefinitely.

The move appears focused on getting more aspirants to show interest in various positions.

A statement issued at the weekend by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Debo Ologunagba, who is also the Secretary of the PDP NCOC Publicity Sub-Committee, gave no new dates for the two activities.

Ologunagba stated: “The National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC) of the PDP has extended the deadline for the submission of completed Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for aspirants contesting in the November 15th to 16th 2025 Elective National Convention of the party in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital from the earlier announced date of Friday, September 26th, 2025.

“In the same vein, the NCOC has approved the shifting of the date for the Screening of Aspirants for the National Convention from the earlier scheduled date of Tuesday, September 30th, 2025.

“The extension is necessitated by the need to ensure all necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of the exercise.

“New dates will be communicated in due course.

“All aspirants should note the extension and be guided accordingly.”

BREAKING: PENGASSAN orders gas supply cut to Dangote refinery

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) has ordered its members across key oil and gas companies to halt supply of crude oil and gas to the Dangote Petroleum Refinery.

The order followed the alleged sack of 800 workers by Dangote Petroleum Refinery last Thursday.

In a memo by the General Secretary of  PENGASSAN, Comrade Lumumba Okugbawa, to Branch chairmen in TotalEnergies, Renaissances, Chevron, Shell Nigeria Gas, Oando, and Seplat Producing Nigeria Unlimited. PENGASSAN directed the immediate shutdown of valves and suspension of all crude loading operations to the facility.

“INGC chairman, ensure that gas supply to the refinery is cut off effective immediately,” the directive reads in part.

The move comes just two after the Dangote Refinery disengaged about 800 workers, describing the exercise as part of an ongoing reorganisation to protect the facility from repeated acts of sabotage that had raised safety concerns and hampered operations.

JUST IN: Dangote Refinery suspends petrol sales in Naira

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has suspended the sale of petrol in naira, a move that has unsettled fuel marketers and heightened concerns over possible pressure on pump prices and the foreign exchange market.

In an email sent to customers at 6:42 pm on Friday, the refinery announced that the suspension will take effect from Sunday, September 28, 2025. The decision, it explained, was triggered by the depletion of its crude-for-naira allocation.

The statement, by the Group Commercial Operations of Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals and titled “Suspension of DPRP PMS Naira Sales – Effective 28th September 2025”, advised customers with pending naira-based transactions to request refunds.

It reads in part: “We write to inform you that Dangote Petroleum Refinery & Petrochemicals has been selling petroleum products in excess of our Naira-Crude allocations and, consequently, we are unable to sustain PMS sales in Naira going forward.

“Kindly note that this suspension of Naira sales for PMS will be effective from Sunday, 28th of September, 2025. We will provide further updates regarding the resumption of supply once the situation has been resolved.

“All customers with PMS transactions in Naira who would like a refund of their current payments should formally request the processing of their refund.”

This is not the first time the refinery has halted naira transactions. In March 2025, it briefly suspended sales of refined products in the local currency, also citing inadequate crude-for-naira allocations. That earlier decision triggered concerns about the dollarisation of fuel sales and pushed petrol pump prices to nearly ₦1,000 per litre.

     “Kabiyesi, thank you.

    “Thank you for supporting me.

“I came to this Mapo years ago to appeal for your support, you listened to me that it’s my turn and we are there already. Thank you.”

President Tinubu also expressed gratitude to the people of Ibadan for their overwhelming support during his 2023 presidential campaign, describing the warm reception in the city as one of the most memorable moments of his life.

The gathering witnessed a significant presence of political leaders whose attendance was acknowledged by the President.

Among them were former governors Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano), Donald Duke (Cross River), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Ibrahim Shekarau (Kano) and Ibikunle Amosun (Ogun), among others.

The President, who engaged them in warm handshakes at the occasion, noted that their attendance underscored the national significance of the occasion.

Olubadan chieftaincy system challenges over, says Makinde

In his remarks after presenting the staff and instruments of office to Oba Ladoja, Governor Makinde said the Olubadan traditional system and succession process are sacrosanct and must continue to be upheld.

He maintained that all challenges associated with the Olubadan chieftaincy system in recent years were over, even as he prayed that the reign of Oba Ladoja would usher in peace, progress and development in the city.

Presenting the staff of office to the new Olubadan, the governor said: “In front of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who is here with us to celebrate the coronation and presentation of staff of office, I, Engineer Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State of Nigeria, in exercise of the powers conferred upon me by Subsections 1 and 2 of section 20 of the Chiefs Law, Cap 28, Volume 1, laws of Oyo State, Nigeria 2000, and by virtue of all other powers enabling in that behalf, I hereby present the staff of office to Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, Arusa I.”

Governor Makinde congratulated all the sons and daughters of Ibadanland, noting that the era of Oba Ladoja had begun to witness positive developments.

According to him, history was made yesterday when President Tinubu landed at the upgraded Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport, Alakia, Ibadan, in the first wide-bodied aircraft to ever land in the facility.

Governor Makinde pointed out that the ascension of the new Olubadan was met with excitement by residents of the city, stating that this was an indication that the people want the Olubadan tradition to be upheld.

He said: “I congratulate all sons and daughters of Ibadanland at home and in the Diaspora.

“The excitement everywhere in this city today shows that we must uphold our tradition.

“I want to say that all challenges associated with Ibadan traditional institutions are now over and behind us.

“What this means is that the tradition, the succession and process are now sacrosanct.

“We know everything about that succession.

“Today, history was literally made. The President landed at the Ibadan Airport with the first wide-bodied aircraft ever to land in Ibadan Airport.

“This shows that the era of Oba Ladoja has begun to witness positive developments.

“So, I want to congratulate Kabiyesi and to say that his reign shall be peaceful, bring progress and development to Ibadanland.”

Oba Ladoja: I expect creation of Ibadan State before 2027

In his acceptance speech, Oba Ladoja, whose arrival at Mapo Hall amid cheers, songs and dancing was preceded with his decoration with the traditional Akoko leave at the Ose meji Temple, said Ibadan is blessed with highly resourceful people, both indigenes and residents.

He noted that its forefathers made great decisions in accommodating leading federal establishments and private businesses, which he said must now give back to the people of Ibadan.

The new Oba pleaded with President Tinubu to make the creation of Ibadan State from the current Oyo State a reality before May 2027.

Oba Ladoja declared that his reign would be about service to Ibadan, Oyo State, Yorubaland, Nigeria and Africa, stating that he would serve the people to the best of his ability as, according to him, all that is left for him to do is service to humanity, since God spared his life to witness his 81st birthday and also attain the throne of Olubadan.

He also declared that his reign would be about urban renewal, as many of the communities in the city, which are fast becoming slums, would be rebuilt.

He said: “This staff of office that the governor, our son in whom we are well-pleased, has presented to me is a source of joy to all Ibadan sons and daughters.

“One year ago, some people thought Ibadan would scatter, but Ibadan has a way of settling its matters, and we are here today in unity and oneness.

“I appreciate the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the Oyo State Government, and the Coronation Committee for this event.

“I also appreciate the Olubadan-in-Council; they all supported me.

“They are the kingmakers and if they did not agree to my nomination, I cannot be here today.

“I am assuring the people of Ibadan that since God spared me till today, I will serve them and I will do it with all my powers.

“There is nothing else I am looking for in life. Yesterday, I clocked 81. Some people do not have this privilege.

“So, I recognise that the fact that God spared me till date, what remains is to serve every resident of Ibadan, serve Oyo State, serve Yorubaland, serve Nigeria and Africa to the best of my ability.”

Earlier in his welcome address, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Bayo Lawal, also congratulated Oba Ladoja, stressing that his ascension to the throne marked the climax of his resilient journey.

Lawal also appreciated President Tinubu, Governor Makinde, his wife, royal fathers and all dignitaries who witnessed the occasion and supported the Oyo State Government.

Similarly, in their separate goodwill messages, the Chairman, Olubadan Coronation Planning Committee, Chief Bayo Oyero; President-General, Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes (CCII)), Ajeniyi Ajewole and the Agbaoye of Ibadanland, Chief Kola Karim, appreciated Governor Makinde for his support and commitment to tradition, describing the coronation of the 44th Olubadan as a blessing to Ibadanland.

The trio prayed that the reign of the new Olubadan would bring more growth, progress and prosperity to Ibadanland and Oyo State.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Ademola Ojo, while moving the vote of thanks, appreciated everyone that graced the occasion.

Oba Ladoja, peace-loving bridge-builder, says Speaker Abbas

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, has described former Governor of Oyo State and newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as a peace-loving bridge-builder and one who possesses natural leadership qualities.

The Speaker congratulated Oba Ladoja who clocked 81 on Thursday and was crowned the 44th Olubadan yesterday on his birthday and coronation.

In a congratulatory message signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Leke Olatunji Baiyewu, the Speaker described Oba Ladoja as one who possesses natural leadership qualities which has been exhibited in his political and traditional positions.

Speaker Abbas said Oba Ladoja is not just an elder statesman but a peace-loving bridge-builder whose reign as Olubadan promises to bring prosperity and unity to Ibadan and the Yoruba race by extension.

According to him, Oba Ladoja’s coronation as Olubadan comes at a time when he is pushing for a constitutional role for traditional rulers in the 1999 Constitution.

He sought the support of the new Olubadan in the push for the recognition of traditional rulers in the ongoing review of the Constitution by the National Assembly and State Houses of Assembly.

The Speaker expressed his commitment to the welfare of monarchs, noting that the 10th House under his leadership will continue to support causes that will empower traditional institutions.

While congratulating the people of Ibadan on the emergence of a new king, Speaker Abbas urged all stakeholders to support Oba Ladoja during his reign as Olubadan.

    Fayemi congratulates new Olubadan

Dr Kayode Fayemi, the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), has congratulated Senator Rashidi Ladoja on his coronation as the new Olubadan of Ibadanland.

In a press statement issued by the head of the Fayemi Media Office, Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, Dr Fayemi described the installation of Ladoja as Olubadan as “a fitting recognition of his illustrious contributions to public life and his enduring service to the people of Oyo State and Nigeria at large.”

He said Senator Ladoja’s wealth of experience in politics, business, and community service would no doubt be brought to bear in further uniting the Ibadan traditional institution and enhancing the welfare of his people.

Fayemi expressed confidence that the new Olubadan’s reign would usher in an era of peace, prosperity, and stability not only for Ibadan but also for the entire state of Oyo.

“Senator Ladoja is widely admired as a man of integrity and courage. His ascension to the Ibadan throne is a source of pride, not only to the people of Ibadanland but also to all Nigerians who value leadership anchored on service and humility,” Fayemi said.

While praying for wisdom, strength, and divine guidance for the monarch, Fayemi urged the people of Ibadanland and Oyo State to rally round the new Olubadan to sustain the tradition of peace and progress for which the ancient city is known.
