  • Bayelsa: Lokpobiri directs supporters to vote for APC

    Bolaji Ogundele, Abuja

The All Progressives Congress (APC) seemed to be coasting closer to victory in the forthcoming Bayelsa State governorship election as one of its chieftains and governorship aspirants charged his supporters to vote for the party.

Former Minister of State of Agriculture, Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, who spoke to journalists after a closed-door meeting with the National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, in Abuja on Thursday, however said he is still in court with the party over the dispute generated from the governorship primary of the party.

Senator Lokpobiri, who spoke with the party’s National Chairman, along with some state governors on the platform of the party, said he will not leave the APC for any reason, adding that having served as a minister on the platform of the party, nothing would make him jump ship.

“The reason why I’m here is to pay a courtesy call on National Chairman having been spoken on the party which I have a great respect for and the president. I’m a very strong member of APC and I came today to formally tell our Chairman and to speak to Nigerians, in particular, the electorate in Bayelsa that all of them should vote for APC, regardless of what will happen in the matter that is fixed for judgment on Nov. 14, 2019.

“I told my supporters, even before I came for this visit, that no matter what happens, I will remain in APC, having served as minister under this administration. There is no way because of the outcome of the governorship primary that will make me to leave APC.

“We are working and campaigning at different levels. I always advise that anybody that has grievances the only place to go and resolve those grievances is the court. So, whatever that is happening in the matter that is pending in the court is not an infraction on any part of our party’s constitution,” he said.

Jigawa Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Badaru, said the APC had overwhelmed the entire Bayelsa State with its governorship campaign, saying that his party would win in Bayelsa State.

“Well, you have witnessed the campaign going on both PDP and APC in Bayelsa. I believe by now judge by yourselves that APC is doing wonderfully well in Bayelsa. You are all witnesses to all the rallies that have been happening for both the two parties. I believe that success is ours,” he said.

  • Bello arming thugs in Kogi communities for poll, PDP alleges

    James Azania, Lokoja

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Campaign Council in Kogi has alerted the military special operation and other security agencies not to protect the influx of armed thugs into the state.

It alleged that the influx was being sponsored by ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the state government, to prevent the people of the state from voting for the candidates of their choice.

The council, in a statement through its deputy director on Public Communication, Comrade Austin Okai Usman, described the alleged influx of armed thugs as a direct affront by the current administration to cause mayhem on the hapless electorates.

The statement reads: “Heavily armed thugs have started arriving from neighbouring states of Benue, Edo, Ondo, Enugu and Lagos; with Agatu warriors from Benue fully on the list of mercenaries hired to kill and maim the innocent people during the exercise.

“The party challenge security agents to display professional approach, by going round major hotels and lodges in Lokoja, the state capital, some designated hotels in Anyigba in Kogi East, where cache of arms are stocked for election purposes by November 16.

“The state government has also taken possession of some hardened criminals that escaped from Koton-Karfe prison for the election, just as the allegations against the speaker of the state assembly, Mathew Kolawole, of haven imported some set of thugs from Lagos, and it is confirmed of their arrival into the state capital.

“The state government has designated their arm caches in federal constituencies ranging from Lokoja, Kabba, Okene, Ajaokuta, Yagba East, Adavi, Ankpa, Anyigba and Idah, in hotels and government lodges, where the hoodlums are kept under guarded police cover, to carry out their operations spread across the 21 local government areas.

“The PDP alert the international community like Amnesty International, UNIDO, the US embassy and the UK to beam its searclight on the Kogi election, as the current governor has declared war on the people of the state to win the election at all costs.

“The pre-election crises, kidnap, battacks, abduction and killings that will serve as prelude to the main mayhem has commenced in earnest, as the APC thugs are going round the 21 area councils under police cover, to kill perceived opponents without remorse.

“The council for the umpteenth time reminds the police IG of the neck deep involvement of the state Police Commissioner, and we reiterate our demand for his removal before the election, to ensure peaceful, free and fair election.

“The council is also in possession of information that these thugs will be adorned in fake police and soldiers’ uniform a day to the election aiming at causing trouble in Kogi East and Kogi West.”

  • Group accuses police of plotting to rig Kogi poll

    By Tony Akowe, Abuja

A group of concerned citizens of Kogi State has accused the police of plotting to compromise the November 16 governorship election in the state in favour of Governor Yahaya Bello.

They alleged that a special police unit to be commanded by one Superintendent Aminu Mohammed had been deployed to the state with full instructions to ensure that Bello emerged winner of the election at all cost.

Spokesman of the group, Williams Adebola, said part of the orders given the special police team drafted from Lagos was to arrest and intimidate prominent opposition leaders in the state.

He said: “As we officially begin the count down to the November 16 governorship election in Kogi state, it is important we interrogate the activities of key actors that are expected to feature prominently in the exercise. Understandably, the Nigeria Police Force as the lead security agency in the conduct of elections is one of such agencies.

“Being a critical institution of state saddled with the task of ensuring peaceful and violence-free elections, the police force is expected to be neutral, impartial and remain apolitical in its affairs.

“Sadly, as hopeful as we are ahead of the Kogi poll, credible information available to us indicate that the Nigeria Police Force has perfected plans to do the bidding of Governor Yahaya Bello and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the election. Undoubtedly, this development should naturally give us cause for concern.

“It is indeed a sad commentary that the very police force that is supposed to ensure the sanctity of the electoral process has been given the ignominous assignment to rig the forthcoming election in favour of the APC.

“As you read through these lines, the police hierarchy in Abuja has concluded plans to deploy certain officers that would execute this assignment. Information at our disposal has it that an officer from a Special Protection Unit in Lagos has been redeployed to the Counter Terrorism Unit of the force in Lokoja as commander. There’s no doubt Superintendent of Police Aminu Mohammed has been dispatched to Kogi State to carry out Yahaya Bello’s dirty job.

“These newly redeployed officers already have their job clearly cut out for them, which is to harass, intimidate and arrest prominent members of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and to compromise the entire process to favour their paymasters, Governor Yahaya Bello and APC.

Adebola added: “We understand the desperation on the part of Yahaya Bello and the APC. For a party that has been written off by the people and on the verge of being swept away, it is bent on deploying all resources at its disposal to manipulate the electoral process.

“Truth is, given Governor Bello’s disturbing, appalling and abysmally poor governance record, Kogites have collectively resolved to send him packing come November 16, 2019.

“IGP Adamu should reconsider the deal he’s struck with Yahaya Bello. I foresee disaster and shame at the end for both of them.”

  • CSO worried over arms stockpiling

    By Agency Reporter

Civil Society Organisation (CSO), YIAGA Africa, on Wednesday urged security agencies to investigate the reported stockpiling of arms by some politicians ahead of the Kogi and Bayelsa governorship elections.

YIAGA Africa’s Executive Director, Samson Itodo, in the organisation’s “Second Pre-election Observation Report,” also said it had become imperative to investigate the reports on recruitment of thugs.

He said: “With the emerging trends, the election campaigns are becoming more competitive and fiercely contested.

“The reports highlight possible threat to the peaceful conduct of the elections with the observation of the presence of small arms and weapons in some local government areas.

“Observers identified a community as being used for the storage of ammunition and the recruitment of thugs.

“The ammunition was discovered to have been stored prior to the 2019 general elections.

“Other reports of recruitment of political thugs were from some communities in Bayelsa.”

News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Itodo said the report also revealed that buying and selling of Permanent Voter Cards (PVC) still existed as political parties moved from house to house to get people.

He said observers monitored and tracked voter inducement through the distribution of money or gift items such as vehicles by political parties to their supporters in both states.

  • Lyon visits Jonathan’s mother

    By Mike Odiegwu, Yenagoa

Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the Bayelsa State election, Chief David Lyon, has visited the mother of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Lyon met Madam Eunice Jonathan in Otuoke, her community in Ogbia Local Government Area of the state, when the candidate led his campaign train to her residence and other Ogbia wards to solicit votes.

Lyon was led to Madam Jonathan’s home by Ogbia leaders and Jonathan’s kinsmen, including a grassroots mobiliser and former chairman of Bayelsa Environmental Sanitation Agency, Chief Robert Enogha, who recently quit the Governor Seriake Dickson-led administration to join the APC.

The APC candidate, who exchanged pleasantries and held brief discussions with Madam Jonathan, also bowed before the woman for prayers and blessings.

Jonathan’s mother, who spoke in Ogbia dialect, was seen beaming with smiles as she received the candidate and his team.

Translating what ex-President Jonathan’s mother told Lyon, a kinsman of the former Nigerian leader in the entourage, Wisdom Ikuli, quoted her as saying: “David my son, on behalf of my entire family, I have blessed you. Almighty God wants to use you to change the story of Bayelsa State.”

Confirming the development, Ikuli, who is an actor and activist, said: “The great and most blessed people of Otuoke community did not only speak, they acted and also matched their words with action. They told the incoming Governor of Bayelsa State, Chief David Lyon, that he has secured their blessings.

“In order to further confirm the above, they formally handed him over to our great mother, Mrs. Eunice Jonathan, mother of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who blessed him with so much blessings.

“David Lyon has taken the blessings from the community; any other blessing will be like that of Esau. Congratulations to Chief David Lyon. Any Diaspora blessings outside Otuoke, even by our father, leader, hero, legend and living deity, President Goodluck Jonathan, will not be effective.”

Lyon, who was received by a crowd of Otuoke residents at the campaign ground in the area, lamented the abandonment of the water project in Ogbia by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He promised to give the reactivation of the water project priority when elected a governor and to bring the Imirigi gas turbine back to life.

He said the abandonment of the gas turbine had thrown the Otuoke community in perpetual darkness and vowed to restore light in Jonathan’s local government area.

Lyon said it was unacceptable that there were no good roads leading to Otuoke and other communities in Ogbia, saying the local government area would witness tremendous development under his administration.

Addressing the rally, he said: “They have kept you poor and have concluded that you can be easily bought during the election. If they give you money, collect it and vote them out. I assure you that I will use the resources of the state judiciously to develop Bayelsa.”

  • Diri better than Lyon, says PDP

    By Mike Odiegwu, Yenagoa

Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday said the party’s standard bearer in the November 16 Bayelsa State governorship election, Duoye Diri, is the best candidate in the race.

PDP National Chairman, Uche Secondus, led other  leaders of the party to the grand rally in Yenagoa, which was also attended by a big crowd of party faithful.

Governors of Sokoto, Aminu Tambuwal; Bauchi’s Bala Mohammed, who is the Chairman of the PDP Campaign Council; Imo’s Emeka Ihedioha and Delta State’s Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, graced the occasion.

Other governors at the event included Oyo’s Seyi Makinde, while Governor of Ebonyi State was represented by his deputy, Dr. Kelechi Igwe.

Dignitaries who spoke at the rally included former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara; Senate Minority Leader, Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe, and PDP National Women leader, Hajia Mariam Waziri.

Some other PDP National Assembly members, various youth and women groups, who turned the event to a carnival, also attended the rally.

But Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and ex-President Goodluck Jonathan did not attend the rally.

Secondus, who presented the flag of the PDP to the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Douye Diri, described Bayelsa as a PDP state and warned security agencies against compromising the election.

He said the PDP was on ground in the state, alleging there was no federal presence of the APC in Bayelsa.

He said the APC took the control of the Federal Government from former President Goodluck Jonathan, a son of Bayelsa, and appealed to voters to shun the APC.

Secondus, who derided the APC candidate, Chief David Lyon, said there was a huge difference in qualification between him and the PDP standard bearer.

He said while Diri was tested, trusted and educated to govern Bayelsa, Lyon lacked the academic qualifications to represent Bayelsa as a governor.

He said: “There is a great difference between our candidate and their candidate. Lyon cannot represent himself. It is not enough to say I want to be a governor. It is not a village affair. We don’t want people who will go there and will not represent Bayelsa.

“If they wished Bayelsa good, will they bring that kind of candidate? Douye Diri has been tested and has performed. He will not hire professors.

He is professor himself. With Douye and his running mate, what else are you looking for? Don’t be deceived.

“We call on security agencies not to allow themselves to be used by the APC to rig this election. We know that the APC is not on ground but they are planning to come with evil.”

Secondus, Dr. Peter Obi, Dickson and others were unanimous that the APC was no option in the governance of Bayelsa.  Diri promised to consolidate on the achievements of Dickson in education, infrastructure and health.  He said his administration would surpass Dickson’s achievements and create prosperity for everybody in the state.

Tambuwal said the crowd at the event was a clear testimony that Bayelsa belonged to the PDP and urged the people to come out en masse and vote for the PDP.

Dickson on his part said the event was an opportunity for the people to thank the PDP for being their party.

He said: “We are too formidable. The ongoing campaigns have shown the underbelly of the lies of APC in their campaigns. In wards after wards, local government after local government, communities after communities even in their own communities, the people have demonstrated again and again that they are with the PDP and not with the APC.”

  • IGP deploys 35,000 policemen in Kogi

    By James Azania, Lokoja

The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Adamu, on Wednesday approved the deployment of 35,000 policemen to Kogi State for the November 16 governorship election in the state.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police (Kogi Command) in-charge of Operations, Oluwakayode Ayilara, who disclosed this in Lokoja, the state capital, said that all measures had been put in place towards the attainment of a free, fair and credible election in Kogi.

He said the deployment of the policemen would ensure “visibility policing ” of lives and property before and during the November 16 governorship poll.

Speaking at an event tagged: “Stakeholders Conflict Scan Analysis on Electoral Violence in Kogi State,” organised by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Search for Common Ground,  Ayilara noted that the choice of ensuring a violence free election was for all to make.

The police chief, who allayed fears about the militarisation of the governorship election, said that the presence of soldiers at polling units was not envisaged during the exercise.

He, however, expressed worries over incidence of violence, particularly in the Kogi East Senatorial District.

He said in addition to the four policemen to be posted to each of the polling units on election day, four personnel per unit from other security agencies would also be on ground, adding that the deployed policemen would arrive in the state on November 11 from Abuja and other states.

Ayilara said that armed policemen would also be positioned at identified strategic areas in the state to ensure quick response to any emergency.

He said that four policemen will be deployed to each of the 2,548 polling units in the state, assuring citizens of police neutrality in their conduct before and during the election.

According to him: “This election is a special one, being that it will hold in two states (Kogi and Bayelsa), and the IG has graciously deployed 36,000 police officers for the Kogi election.

“I can assure you that the police are not only ready for the exercise, the election is not going to be militarised, I can assure you. Soldiers will only be at border points, and can only come in when they are invited.”

“In the last couple of days, reports of culpable homicide have been reported in Dekina. Just yesterday here, two thugs were after each other, and one shot the other, houses were burnt.

“On our part, the police will continue to do its work because that is what we are employed for. But it is important to note that we are all stakeholders in this project.”

An official of the NGO, Mrs. Lola Memedu, had earlier in a presentation expressed worry over the steady rise in tension in the state ahead of the election.

Memedu said that the group through its Electoral Empowerment of Civil Society Project (EECSP) had observed cases of violence and physical attacks between stalwarts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

  • Power will shift in Bayelsa, says Lyon

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State, David Lyon, has reiterated his determination to succeed Governor Seriake Dickson during the November 16 poll. MIKE ODIEGWU reports.

David Pereworimini Lyon, the standard bearer of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the November 16 governorship election in Bayelsa State was born on December 20, 1970. The 49-year-old Lyon grew up from the oil-rich creeks of Olugbobiri in Southern Ijaw, the largest Local Government Area in Bayelsa State.

For Lyon, growing up was difficult. But, he conquered the challenges through hard work, diligence and never-say-die spirit. “I had a humble upbringing and grew up among a people that emphasised love, hard work, diligence, peaceful coexistence and principle-centered living,” he said.

Following his love for education, Lyon toiled and through self-help attended St. Gabriel’s State School 1, Olugbobiri where he obtained the First School Leaving Certificate (FSLC). He went to studied at the Community Secondary School, Olugbobiri, where he sat for the West African School Certificate Examination (WASCE). His desire for higher education propelled him to get admission at the Rivers State College of Education where he obtained the National Certificate of Education (NCE) in Mathematics and Chemistry.

Lyon, who is married with three children, was famous for engaging oil multinationals operating in his community to live up to their social responsibilities to Olugbobiri became an oil industry player, especially in the security sub-sector when he proffered lasting solutions to illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism and illegal refining of crude oil, which were rampant in Southern Ijaw.

A public analyst and environmental rights activist, Alagoa Morris, said Lyon’s formula saved the operations of the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC), which had threatened to pull out of the area, following unchecked economic crimes and sabotage by oil thieves.

“It was later I got to know that it was David Lyon’s effort that actually led to the gradual reduction in Local refinery operations in the headquarters of the business. Until now, you will not see any local refinery site or camp in Southern Ijaw local government. This has reduced oil industry related pollution in Southern Ijaw local government area and by extension; Bayelsa State and Niger Delta. It has also led to increases in 13 per cent derivation for Bayelsa State.

“In fact, before then, the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC) threatened to stop operations in its swamp area, which was largely Southern Ijaw local government. This was attributed to the level of oil theft, illegal bunkering and local refinery activities, and, NAOC was not meeting up when compared with expenses in the area. That also threatened how much Bayelsa received from 13 per cent derivation monthly.”

Indeed, Lyon, a Christian,  has been a successful businessman and has deliberately and consistently grown and expanded his business empire. He once worked as a foreman in Western Geophysical Company Ltd. But he is now the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Darlon Oil and Gas Nigeria Ltd, Darlon Group Nig.Ltd, and Arutex and Sons Nig. Ltd.

Commenting on Lyon’s entrepreneurial skills, Morris said: “Actually, David Lyon has been in business, as astute businessman, who has demonstrated dexterity in same. He has successfully managed his business; unlike some sailing politicians, who have since abandoned their professions and relied completely on our commonwealth, which they can get only in politics. Some of them are lawyers but their law firms are on lock and key, gathering dust and all the monies they are making comes from politicking.

“In addition to stopping the local refinery operations, Lyon’s company has given employment to many people, mostly youths, in our communities. Over 5,000 persons have been so engaged. During my recent trip to one of the communities in Boma Clan, I was informed about 80 youths of the community are employed by the security company associated with David Lyon. This is highly commendable; when juxtaposed with the fact that not even local, state or federal government has that record in our communities.”

On his contributions to the economy of Bayelsa as an individual, Lyon said: “I have partnered with multinational oil companies to generate employment for legions of youths in the state. In fact, my company, Darlong Security Company Nigeria Limited, is the highest employer of labour in Bayelsa State, after the state government. It is also the single most contributor to the Internally Generated Revenue by any indigenous firm in Bayelsa.”

Lyon is not a political neophyte or a rookie in politics. His search for a bigger platform to effect social change and transformation compelled him to join politics in the Third Republic. As a member of the defunct, National Republican Congress (NRC), he contested and won a councilorship election at Ward 4 in Southern Ijaw. But the military incursion aborted his tenure in 1997.

But, Lyon would not give up. He said: “I continued my political journey and became a founding member of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) in Southern Ijaw. My dexterity, astuteness and collaborative skills in politics paid off when I was appointed as the Caretaker Committee Chairman of Apoi Olodiama Local Government Development Center in year 2000.

“My brief tenure as Caretaker Committee Chairman witnessed an unprecedented surge in development, peace and stability. I am a card carrying and financial member of the All Progressive Congress (APC), who is committed to the governance values and transformation programmes of the party”.

Undoubtedly, during the trying times of the APC in Bayelsa, Lyon was said to have stood as its main financier. He kept the flag of the party flying and eventually won the admiration of most party members.

Lyon is also known for his philanthropic gestures. Through his David Lyon Foundayion (DLF), he has been floating a functional scholarship schemes with beneficiaries drawn from the eight local government areas of the state. He provides regular financial and material assistance to the elderly, widows, physically-challenged persons and other needy individuals.

Read Also: Jonathan, Wike shun PDP mega rally in Bayelsa

On Lyon’s philanthropy, Morris said: “David Lyon has done much without regard to where beneficiaries come from. Through the David Lyon Foundation, he has reached out with scholarship to indigent students in secondary and tertiary institutions in all the eight local government areas of Bayelsa State. Some of these beneficiaries are in the best private Universities.

“Just to mention two of such students who are studying Medicine and Surgery. He takes the elderly and physically-challenged along in his stride of generosity. Most politicians who have benefited from fat constituency funds from our commonwealth cannot even do some of these things David Lyon has continued to do for about ten years.

“This gesture by David Lyon is unlike those of some selfish politicians who would want to display some levels of philanthropy when it is close to election simply because they are targeting some political office. They disappear if they fail until another election approaches.”

Lyon said: “I am a core philanthropist that have extended help to several communities and individuals in terms of scholarship, bursary, construction and rehabilitation of rural infrastructure, payment of hospital bills, disaster intervention programmes, amongst others.”

Morris, however, mocked persons alleging that the APC candidate lacked the ability to express himself in English Language. He wondered how he could sit atop a business group conducting his transactions globally without communicating effectively.

He said: “Bayelsans, who see David Lyon as their choice for Creek Haven  as Governor after Seriake Dickson should be rest assured that those petty issues of him not being educated or cannot speak English fluently show his detractors and opposition are only displaying how  jittery they are and have nothing else against him.

“Yet, they are dead wrong. Was it in Ijaw language that he addressed the media; Their antics are well known; one of which is,  give a dog bad name so as to kill it. I am not campaigning here for David Lyon, as I have not met him one-on-one in life before and nobody from his political party or camp has reached out to Alagoa Morris.

“All I am concerned is that Bayelsans have been paying for darkness for too long. No portable water. Our communities are still largely dependent on the rivers for drinking water as in the days of Isaac Boro.

“They still lack functional health and educational facility. No good transport system, suffering serious coastal erosion and flooding, among others. Governor Dickson has done his best for the state, becoming the very first to serve eight years. Posterity will judge how far. Come 16th November, 2019 as the electorate exercise their franchise; let it be the ballot and not the bullet”.

Governor Dickson has done his best for the state, becoming the very first to serve eight years. Posterity will judge how far. Come 16th November, 2019 as the electorate exercise their franchise; let it be the ballot and not the bullet

  • Diri: APC can’t beat PDP in Bayelsa

Senator Douye Diri is the governorship flagbearer of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State. He told Correspondent MIKE ODIEGWU in Yenagoa, the state capital, that the All Progressives Congress (APC) cannot dislodge the PDP at the poll.

The governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri  is a founding member of the PDP. He joined the party in 1998. Since then, Diri has been holding different political positions.

The 60-year-old Diri was born into the family of A.J.M Diri of Kalamaowei-Wari compound of Sampou Town in Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area. He attended the Okoro Primary School in Sampou and the State School Kaiama, now the Rev. Proctor Memorial Primary School, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate.

In his quest for secondary education, Diri attended the Government Secondary School, Odi and later, the College of Education, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where he obtained Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE), Port Harcourt River State. He went to obtain Bachelors of Education in Political Science at the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Diri, no doubt, has had a robust experience in public administration and the Ijaw struggle. He started his career as a teacher in secondary schools in the creeks in the old Rivers State before the creation of Bayelsa. It was gathered that he engaged in business briefly before his adventure into politics.

Prior to his involvement in active politics, Diri was elected the pioneer National Organising Secretary of the Ijaw National Congress (INC), a pan-Ijaw social-political organisation formed for the protection of Ijaw interest in the country.

The PDP candidate first served in the administration of the first elected governor of Bayelsa, Chief Diepreye Alamieyeiseigha as the Executive Secretary, Centre for Youth Development (CYD). During the administration of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, Diri was appointed as Commissioner for Youths and Sports.

Diri also served as a board member, the University of Maiduguri Governing Council and  Chairman, the Peoples Democratic Party Disciplinary Council in Bayelsa in 2012. In fact, Diri has been a friend, political associate and confidant of Governor Seriake Dickson.

He was brought into political limelight by a former Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Timi Alaibe. So, he owes his rise in politics to Alaibe. He was one of the foot soldiers of Alaibe, who influenced his appointment as a Commissioner for Youths and Sports when Dr. Goodluck Jonathan was governor.

Alaibe, who hails from the same Kolokuma-Opokuma, has is a popular politician in Bayelsa and a rallying point in his local government area, following his developmental strides in his area during his days as the NDDC boss.

Speaking on Alaibe’s role in his political relevance, Diri said: “For clarity, a lot of people saw me as a staff of NDDC, but I wasn’t. I was a political ally and a close person to Chief Timi Alaibe, believing that we were going to enthrone a government in Bayelsa that would be more responsive to the people.

“I was with Chief Alaibe for about 10 years. One thing or the other happened in each election we attempted. Then, he would return to NDDC. A few of us didn’t feel very comfortable with that.

“Just to let you know, we hail from the same local government area. So, he is my brother. I see him as a brother and I believe that he too sees me as one.”

But, Diri switched his camp to Dickson’s when it became obvious that Dickson was the then President Goodluck Jonathan’s choice to replace former Governor Timipre Sylva. The Green Movement, was a forceful and vibrant  king-making association consisting of powerful and wealthy politicians, including Jonathan.

On why he parted ways with Alaibe, he said: “Being a former colleague, he (Dickson) invited me to be a part of the campaigns. In fact, when I accepted the offer and informed Chief Alaibe, my political ally at that time, he didn’t take it kindly. That was how we parted ways. So, I joined Governor Dickson, we campaigned, went into the election and he won in 2012.”

Diri warmed himself into the heart of Dickson and became a trusted foot soldier of the governor. He played crucial roles in the election and reelection of the governor in 2012 and 2015. Since then, he has been enjoying the dividends of his loyalty to Dickson and his Restoration Government.

Dickson first appointed Diri his Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House and later made him his Principal Executive Secretary. The governor supported him to win an election in 2015 as a member representing Yenagoa-Kolokum-Opokuma at the House of Representative. He later in 2019 to became a Senator representing the Central Senatorial District at the National Assembly.

Against all odds, Dickson and his restoration team backed Diri to become the candidate of the PDP in the forthcoming November 16 governorship election. Dickson deployed his political mastery to plot Diri’s victory at the internal poll that was contested by 21 PDP aspirants, including Alaibe, Diri’s former godfather.

But, Diri has always insisted that his governorship ambition was a call to service to consolidate on the achievements of his boss, Governor Dickson. Diri, who tagged his campaign theme, Consolidation for Prosperity, has been traversing the creeks of Bayelsa to convince the electorate to vote for him.

Diri once said he was neither a stooge nor an underdog in the governorship race. He said he would shock those who underestimated him.

He said: “It will be very clear to anyone in doubt about who I am, what I stand for and why I even accepted to work with the current governor. I told you that Sylva was in power for five years and I didn’t get into Bayelsa State. That tells you I am a man of principle. I choose my friends and those I want to work with.
