Keyamo, Dogara trade words over Buhari’s endorsement of Tinubu

The spokesperson for the Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Festus Keyamo and former speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara on Sunday traded words over President Muhammadu Buhari’s endorsement of the APC flag bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

The heated exchange generated mixed reactions on social media, especially Twitter.

Dogara had referred to Buhari’s endorsement of Tinubu, at a campaign in Nasarawa State as a satire.

But in a swift reaction, Keyamo described the former Speaker, as a ‘political prostitute’.

Dogara said: “I know that PMB loves to crack jokes but I didn’t know he would escalate it to the level of satire. Asiwaju’ll give his best to Nigeria, really?. No PMB, Nigeria does not deserve his best but we get the satire,” Dogara said in his tweet.

Keyamo and Dogara, both lawyers, were mates at the Nigerian Law School

Reacting, Keyamo wrote, “My brother and law school mate, @YakubDogara, this tweet is beneath you. You are actually pained by the support of PMB for @officialABAT, two leaders who have stayed true to their beliefs and causes, unlike the political prostitute, wanderer and back-stabber that you’ve always been.”

Firing back, Dogara challenged Keyamo to win a councilorship election first because both of them are not “mates” in politics.

He said: “Yes, we were mates at Law School, but I am waiting for you to win a councilorship election first so we can be mates in politics. Learn to punch below your weight category”

“My brother, I have a name for you but because it’s not a good one, I won’t say it as a cost of friendship,” he added.

But Keyamo, replied the former speaker telling him that everyone must not “be rated by elections won and lost”.

He said: “Let me remind you that I’ve reached the height of our profession and you must learn to respect your senior at the bar!”

Terrorists kill one, abduct 10 women in Niger community

One person was killed, two injured and no fewer than 10 women were abducted in a terrorists’ attack on Tudun Magaji community of Kontagora Local Government Area of Niger State.

The Nation learnt that the incident occurred at about 12.30am on Wednesday.

The assailants, it was gathered, conducted a house-to-house search before the villagers realised that they were under attack.

The person who was killed tried to run for safety when his house was invaded causing the terrorists to shoot him.

The injured are receiving treatment at the Kontagora General Hospital while local vigilantes and the Joint Security Taskforce are in search of the women who were abducted.

One of the injured, Kabiru Mohammed, said that his stepmother’s scream at about 2am alerted him that something was happening.

“I didn’t sleep until around 2am. I heard my stepmother’s scream and since we all know that bandits’ attacks have reduced drastically, we thought it was a rapist, as it is now common in the area.

“I went out to find out what was happening; it was dark so I didn’t see him holding a gun. I just heard the gunshot, I panicked and ran inside, he followed me and hit me with a stick on the head. That was all I could remember.”

Kabiru said two people were abducted from his family compound and called on the government to work towards securing the release of those abducted during the attack.

The second victim who was shot during the incident, Yakubu Shuaibu said he was in his second wife’s room when he heard his first wife screaming, and his attempt to find out what was happening earned him a gunshot in his stomach.

“I was at home when my wife was shouting, I went to find out what was happening and they shot me when they sighted me.

“They were not much. I think they divided themselves and went to every compound in batches. I was shot in the stomach but was rushed to the hospital after they had left.”

The residents have called for increased security surveillance in their community as they lament the non-presence of security which has led to a series of attacks on the community recently.

APC: Tinubu didn’t insult A’Ibom people

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Akwa Ibom has said that its presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu did not insult Akwa Ibom people when he referred to Governor Udom Emmanuel as a ‘boy’.

State chairman of the APC, Stephen Ntukekpo accused the Akwa Ibom State government of twisting Tinubu’s comments made during his presidential campaign last Monday in Uyo.

Ntukekpo said that the government was trying to stir the peoples’ anger and opposition against the party’s candidate ahead of the presidential election coming up about three weeks from now.

In a statement issued to The Nation at the weekend, the state chairman of the APC commended Tinubu for exposing the poor performance of the Emmanuel-led administration when he referred to him as a ‘boy’.

The party asked the government to atone the state over alleged financial recklessness and plundering of resources.

Reacting, however, Ntukekpo noted that Tinubu actually exposed Emmanuel’s “financial mismanagement and Lilliputian performance”.

Ntukekpo said the situation has plunged the people into poverty and deprivation for nearly eight years of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership.

“Only recently, we were made to understand that payments in excess of N600 billion, being refunds from the APC-led Federal Government, were made from the federation account to Akwa Ibom State.”

The APC told the public that till date, the Emmanuel-led administration has been unable to satisfactorily explain how the funds were used.

The statement further alleged the governor was “plotting to foist a stooge as his successor to cover his tracks”.

Ntukekpo declared that the “machinations of the PDP” had failed as Akwa Ibom people “are resolute” to vote for the APC and its candidate, Akanimo Udofia.

Yoruba Nation: Police arrest 10, dismantle camp in Lagos

Operatives of the Lagos Police Command on Sunday arrested 10 suspected Yoruba Nation agitators over unlawful assembly

The police also dismantled a protest camp set up by the agitators at Alausa in Ikeja ahead of the planned nationwide anti-Buhari disturbance billed to commence February 6.

The Nation reports that a flier with notice of the protest surfaced on the social media calling on all Nigerians against the lingering cash crunch and  fuel scarcity to join the “Buhari Must Go” protest in all major cities.

Although unsigned, the information was however greeted by mixed reactions with those against it accusing the government of plans to stop the general elections billed to hold in two weeks.

It was gathered that the agitators had stormed Alausa with cooking wares, tents, generators, bread and other food items in order to set up their base there.

According to police sources, there were intelligence reports that the group planned to use the location as their base from where they would lunch massive protest and ground activities in the state.

Unfortunately for them, security operatives were swiftly deployed and the camp dismantled.

Confirming the incident, spokesman for the command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin told The Nation that 10 of the suspects were arrested and we’re currently being interrogated.

He said the command would not condone any form of lawlessness anywhere in the state.

Warning against any form of violence, the Force Public Relations Officer (FPPRO), CSP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, said it was clear that miscreants with criminal agenda were those behind the looting and other crimes being committed ij the guise of protest against fuel and naira scarcity.

He said: “We condemn the violent protests we have recorded so far. It’s crystal clear that these were orchestrated by hoodlums who had their targets of robbing banks’ ATM, looting shopping malls, shops, stealing from persons, etc, not peaceful protest as claimed.

“How does protest against fuel and naira scarcity affect innocent drivers, sellers, market women, and even the police, who were victims of attacks from the so-called “peaceful” protesters? In ibadan, they went to set ablaze a station, for what?

“Anyway, we will not allow any lawlessness or breakdown of law and order in any part of the country. No way. So, we want to urge well-meaning Nigerians to be patient, law abiding, and maintain decorum in whatever they do so that the long arm of the won’t catch them. Thanks.”

  • ‘N95b remediation for Ogoniland ongoing’

    ‘N95b remediation for Ogoniland ongoing’

The Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Ogoni Trust Fund, Michael Nwielaghi has said the N95 billion remediation programme approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for Ogoni clean – up as recommended by the United Nations Environment Programme Report was ongoing.

Nwielaghi, while commending President Buhari for approving another N25 billion for power projects in the region, noted that livelihood programmes were also going on in Ogoniland.

Speaking during an interview on the sideline of a send – off dinner organised for the Pioneer BoT of Ogoni Trust Fund in Abuja, Nwielaghi said 500 Ogoni youths have been employed to oversee the surveillance of the clean – up processes.

He said: “The clean – up of ogoniland has started, we have been doing work. You know remediation goes underground so when these things take place people don’t know that it is not visible to the eyes. So when people see grasses growing they will not know that that place has been remediated. To that extent you will say nothing is going on.

“We also have some water projects that are ongoing. Some of the projects have been commissioned and they are working. There are 14 water projects that would have taken off since June but because of litigation from folks around the place, the projects have been stalled.

“Recently, the president approved about N25 billion for power projects for Ogoni and it has commenced. Another N95 billion for remediation has been achieved by Mr President. As we speak, livelihood programmes are going on in Ogoniland.

“The Minister of Environment has awarded a surveillance contract for the whole entire process for 500 Ogoni youths. We call on our youths to stop breaking pipelines. We cannot be sinking money into the ground and they will be cutting pipes; they are spoiling the lands.

“The clean – up of Ogoniland is going on but the problem we have is that of litigation that has stalled the process. If not, the whole of Ogoni would have been reticulated; the water projects would have gone to everybody’s home. The six that are going on now are being selected. Fourteen have been in the Bureau of Public Procurement since June last year and we cannot do anything.”

Speaking during an interview, Nwielaghi commended the Pioneer Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT), Ogoni Trust Fund, Wale Edun for laying a solid foundation for the operational take – off of the Trust Fund.

Nwielaghi said: “Mr Wale Edun was there for four years and he did the operational framework for the Trust Fund. Ogoni people will remain indebted to President Muhammadu Buhari and for Wale Edun and his board who single handedly laid the foundation, God will bless him.

“Ogoni people will continue to pray for Wale Edun because they set up all the processes for this work and so far no money is missing. We inherited a healthy account from him and till today there is nothing that is wrong.”

Minister of Environment, Mohammed Abdullahi, said the Federal Government remained committed to the clean-up exercise of Ogoniland.

He assured that the government would fulfill its commitment to the people of Ogoni.

  • Naira, fuel protest turns bloody as soldiers kill one in Ibadan

Naira, fuel protest turns bloody as soldiers kill one in Ibadan

The anti-fuel/naira scarcity protest in Ibadan turned bloody on its second day yesterday after one person was shot dead by security personnel.

Some hoodlums, according to the police in Ibadan, had attacked the security personnel while on patrol around Apata Junction Market.

Long queues at ATMs persisted across the country yesterday as the people raced against time to dispose of their old naira notes and collect new ones before the expiration of the February 10 deadline given by the Central Bank.

The police in Oyo and Kwara states said intelligence at their disposal suggested plots by some people to attack banks and public facilities over the lingering fuel/naira scarcity.

The Ibadan security team had embarked on the patrol to keep the peace following the eruption of protests in parts of the city on Friday.

However, one of the patrol teams ran into the hoodlums who were said to have perfected plans to molest residents, harass shop owners and loot shops.

On sighting the combined convoy of security, the suspected hoodlums allegedly began firing guns, hurling stones, sharp objects and other dangerous missiles at the security patrol.

Spokesperson for the Oyo State Police Command, Adewale Osifeso, a Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the development in a statement, said the team “arrested the situation with reasonable force in line with police standard operational procedure.”

According to him, only the calmness and professional conduct displayed by the security operatives prevented the provocation from claiming more lives.

He said: “The Oyo State Police Command wishes to unequivocally reassert its resolve to maintain the relative tranquility in the state despite pockets of protests witnessed in some parts of the metropolis under the capital.

“Recall the Command issued an advisory via a press release dated Friday 03/02/2023 with the intent to intimate residents about concluded plans of some criminal elements to destabilise and completely bring to a halt economic activities in the state by launching coordinated attacks on critical infrastructures to include INEC facilities, banks, correctional centres, religious centres, landmarks, recreational centres, shopping malls, business centres, public spaces and other places of interest under the guise of protesting the scarcity of fuel and paucity of cash for dispense at ATM machines and Point of Sales terminals.

“Consequent on the above stated, Oyo State Police Command in concert with relevant sister agencies embarked on high octane joint convoy patrols simultaneously across the nooks and crannies of the state with the sole purpose of ridding the environs of undesirable elements with sinister motives of hijacking the situation to make criminal proceeds.

“Today Saturday, 04/02/2023 at about 1015hrs, while embarking on series of confidence building patrols around different black spots and flash points, the joint convoy patrol comprising the police and other agencies ran into a band of hoodlums around Apata Junction Market, Apata Area under Ido Local Government Area.

“In a rather surprising event, the hoodlums, who had perfected plans to molest residents, harass shop owners and loot shops, on sighting the combined convoy of security, launched a series of unprovoked attacks by firing guns, hurling stones, sharp objects and other dangerous missiles at them.

“The trained officers, cautious of the level of casualties that might be recorded should they engage at the location, resorted to restraints and professionally took charge at the scene while arresting the situation with reasonable force in line with standard operational procedure.

“However, during the rage, an individual identified to have been a member of a vigilante group and who was reported to have died in the fiasco has since been deposited at a government hospital for post-mortem.

“Meanwhile normalcy has since returned to the area with heavy deployment of patrol teams and other tactical assets visibly on ground.”

Kwara police ‘uncover’ plot by hoodlums to attack banks

Also yesterday, the Kwara State Police Command said it had uncovered a plot by suspected hoodlums to attack banks in the state.

The command accordingly warned those hatching the plot to perish the thought, failing which they should be prepared to face the consequences.

Spokesperson for the command, Ajayi Okasanmi, said intelligence available to the command “indicates that hoodlums have perfected plans to replicate the lawlessness that was unleashed on some banks in some states of the country, owing to the crisis emanating from the Naira note swap that is ongoing in Nigeria at present, which the government is doing all within its power to normalise.”

Okasanmi said the command has “the capacity to deal ruthlessly with any lawbreaker” and warned criminals to “shelve any such dastardly idea.”

He said Police Commissioner Paul Odama “has ordered aggressive patrols of banks and other financial facilities across the length and breadth of the state, warning criminal elements in the state to change their minds as anyone arrested would be met with heavy consequences.”

Zulum to banks: Dispense new notes or we revoke your land

As long queues at ATMs across the country persist, Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has threatened to revoke the land allocation of any bank refusing to release the new naira notes via ATMs and banking halls.

Zulum issued the directive on Friday in Maiduguri after visiting branches of banks to assess the problems faced by residents in trying to access new naira notes via long queues at ATMs.

“Any bank in Borno State that is not willing to ensure their ATMs are fully dispensing new naira notes cash to ease the suffering of our people, we will withdraw their land title immediately. We will only spare Banks with genuine constraints that are verifiable,” Zulum said.

The governor was unhappy seeing hundreds of people on the queues at a bank’s branch, with only one out of 10 ATMs dispensing cash.

“As you can see here, only less privileged people are queued up. I didn’t see rich people here. Many people are said to be here since 3 am, some could not even eat anything.

“The new naira note and even the old ones are not available and that is adversely affecting commercial activities in the state and people are suffering,” Zulum said.

He added: “We just released salaries of about N5 billion and the banks don’t have money. Some of the ATMs are not working. We don’t have any problem with the CBN policy or the withdrawal limit. They said individuals can only withdraw N20,000, but why can’t everyone have access to that N20,000?

“Yesterday I was in Gubio with a population of over 70,000 people, but it was impossible to source N100,000 in the entire local government, whether the new notes or the old notes.

“A ram that is worth N100,000 is now being sold for N35,000 because people are desperate for cash, and some wicked rich people are going to rural areas to exploit poor people.”

The Governor urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ensure the availability of new notes at commercial banks for people to access their money.

Gov Abiodun suspends re-election campaign indefinitely

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun yesterday suspended his political campaign until further notice.

The governor in a statement signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Kunle Somorin, said he took the decision to identify with the plight of the Ogun people who are faced with the twin challenge of fuel scarcity and naira swap.

While expressing his delight at the 47th anniversary of the creation of the state, the governor said that his administration shared the pains being currently experienced by the people in the state as a result of the redesigned naira notes swap and fuel scarcity.

According to him, the plight being endured by the people is a great sacrifice that can be offered by them for better Nigeria, disclosing that all efforts were being made to ease the situation.

He said that “the issues of scarcity of fuel and new naira notes have been taken up with relevant authorities to make life easier and more meaningful for the people”.

“As an administration voted into office by the people, it will be insensitive to ignore the plight of the people and continue with the reelection campaigns when people cannot do businesses with their hard earned money and cannot get fuel.”

He however promised to continue with the campaign once the crises cease and normalcy returns to the economic activities of the people.

    Senator Tofowomo seeks Emiefele’s arrest

The Senator representing Ondo South, Nicholas Tofowomo, wants the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele, arrested for allegedly disobeying a resolution of the Red Chamber of the National Assembly.

Senator Tofowomo said Emefiele’s action is the is now causing hardship for the generality of Nigerians.

He said: “By now the CBN governor should be in prison for disobeying the Senate and dishonouring its resolution thereby causing naira scarcity. We find it very difficult to have access to cash because Emefiele is lawless and proving very stubborn.

“As a sitting Senator, I was in the bank on Friday to apply for a little cash, but I didn’t get anything. My cheque was returned to me because the bank didn’t have enough new naira notes to pay customers.

“They told me they had paid out what they had for that day even though many customers were still inside the banking hall stranded and shouting.

“In my senatorial district, there are many unbanked residents. More than 300 communities do not have access to commercial banks. For the few with bank accounts, they will need to travel far to locate a bank.

“Thousands of residents are suffering now because they don’t have access to cash to feed their families and transact business. They submitted their old notes in line with the CBN directives by all means, but now, the CBN has failed to fulfill its part by providing new notes for them.

“Things wouldn’t have been this bad if Emefiele obeyed the Senate directive.

“This situation must be arrested immediately. Buhari should just sack Emefiele now to douse the tension for the sake of this election. Emefiele should go.

“People are already saying this is a plan to cause a crisis to cancel the election and install an interim government. I just hope this is not true.”

  • Buhari: Tinubu is next president

    Buhari: Tinubu is next president

From President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday came a fresh endorsement for the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ahead of the February 25 election.

Addressing an APC rally in Lafia, the Nasarawa State capital, Buhari described Tinubu as Nigeria’s next president.

The APC flag bearer, according to the president, is not only a strong believer in Nigeria, he has what it takes to make the country better than it is now.

“We will win through and through. I trust Tinubu’s dedication and service,” he told the cheering crowd in English and Hausa.

Buhari, who spoke against the background of alleged cracks in the APC hierarchy ahead of the election, said: “I have known Bola Tinubu for more than 20 years. I will continue to campaign for him.”

He added: “I am happy to be part of the campaign today for Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the next President of Nigeria and Governor Sule for his second and final term.

“He is a committed Nigerian and I believe he will give everything to make Nigeria better.

“He loves this country. He is a believer in Nigeria and I am sure he will do everything possible to advance the wellbeing of all of us as citizens. He will hold this country with trust. You should cherish him.

“Those of you who are here, I urge you to go back to your friends and family to tell them to vote for him. We will all vote for Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president.”

Tinubu, at the rally, made a mockery of the people that are insinuating cracks in his relationship with President Buhari, saying that such people “will continue to be disappointed and have their short time joy dashed”.

He saluted the courage of the President who he said continued to offer leadership with boldness and courage in spite of all the challenges that are facing the country.

He said Nigeria would recover from the challenges.

Tinubu said Buhari has done well for Nigeria just like former United States President Abraham Lincoln led his country in a time of crisis and still recorded huge achievements in infrastructural development.

His words: “Our President and Leader of APC worldwide, it is a thing of joy that you’re a poster boy for APC and Bola Tinubu today.

“Those who think there are cracks in our friendship and relationship will continue to be disappointed and have their short-time joy dashed. Ours is not about individuals; it is about integrity and nation-building.

“Nobody ever thought a man in uniform will ever be a democratic, principled and honoured Leader. Today, it is a thing of joy and honour to have you at the rally.

“For us who joined hands with you 20 years ago to reshape Nigeria, to fight corruption, to fight destitution, to fight failure and hunger, we are proud of your achievements.

“President Buhari faced the challenges of Nigeria courageously and squarely. You fought hard and worked hard.

“Nigeria is surviving as a nation and we believe because of constitutional democracy, we would have asked you to stay on, but you said no you are going back to Daura.

“You said there is more to do and you will allow other people to continue. There are few leaders who have faced some challenges, crisis like you did and continue to build infrastructure. One of them is Abraham Lincoln.

“You have joined such great men who can stay focused in the midst of distractions and enemies.

“You have tolerated criticisms. There is no labelling you have not endured. But today in Nasarawa, you are celebrated, commissioning projects after projects.

“We can see true leadership but we may not be able to read the mind of the leader.

“Today, I stand before you and make a pledge again that Nigeria will recover from all challenges. We are brave. We are resilient.

“We will focus on agriculture. We will build our mineral resources. We will turn the earth and our dust to money. We will work hard.

“We promise you. Your children and grandchildren will not have any regret about our nation and ourselves. Happiness, joy and prosperity will be part of our success.”

The National Chairman of APC and former governor of the state, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, similarly addressed the rally.

Speaking in Hausa, he regaled the crowd with the history of the friendship between Buhari and Tinubu and told them to vote for APC because of the good job the current administration of the party in Nigeria has accomplished for the country and in Nasarawa State.

He later presented the party’s flag to Governor Sule as the governorship candidate of the party for a second term.

The carnival-like campaign rally had many top Federal Government officials in attendance, including Senate President Ahmed Lawan, who described Nasarawa as a special state that means victory and peace.

“We are here to celebrate excellence. The people should vote Asiwaju Tinubu. President Buhari has always come to Nasarawa to commission projects. APC has delivered excellence to the people of the State,” he said.

Humanitarian Affairs Minister Sadiya Umar Farouq joined the party’s National Women Leader Betta Edu to mobilise women support for the presidential candidate.

The minister listed the Social Investment Programmes which Nasarawa State has benefited from the federal government, admonishing the people that only Asiwaju Tinubu could consolidate on the gains for them to continue to enjoy the benefits.

Plateau State Governor and Director-General of the Campaign Council, Simon Lalong, and former Nasarawa State Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-makura, told the people to vote for all APC candidates in the coming elections.

Progressive Governors’ Forum Chairman and Kebbi State Governor, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, led his colleagues to the campaign ground and spoke on their behalf.
