    • Governor expresses sadness
    • Event cancelled abruptly

A tragic incident that claimed seven lives yesterday brought a temporary halt to the ongoing Calabar Carnival in Calabar, the Cross River State capital.

The colourful event, which kicked-off on Monday with cultural carnival, is expected to end tomorrow.

The annual carnival, which was initiated during the administration of Donald Duke, did not hold in the past two years.

It was suspended in 2020 due to the outbreak of Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. No reason was given for the carnival not holding last year.

But the Bikers’ Carnival/ Exotic Cars Parade were abruptly cancelled when a vehicle rammed into a crowd that thronged the carnival route to watch the bikers, killing many of them.

In a swift reaction, Governor Ben Ayade expressed sadness and ordered the cancellation of the parade before the usual displays by participants.

A statement by the Special Adviser on Media and Chief Press Secretary, Christian Ita, said the governor “is devastated by the incident and has directed security agencies to apprehend the motorist who is on the run”.

In the statement, Ayade sympathised with the victims and members of their families.

He immediately ordered an immediate investigation to unravel how the motorist was able to get through security barricades to have access to the routes which were closed to the public.

Ita said the governor also directed the immediate discontinuation of the Bikers parade in honour of the victims of the accident.

The CPS said the governor Ayade has promised to ensure the arrest of the culprit and bring him to book. He however sued for calm.

The Bikers/Exotic Cars Parade is usually the precursor to the main Carnival Calabar scheduled for today.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) last night confirmed the death of seven people and the injury of 29 others.

The incident happened on Mary Slezzor Avenue by Bogobiri axis of the carnival route.

An eyewitness said children were among those crushed by the vehicle. The injured were rushed to Naval Hospital and the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) hospitals.

Confirming the casualty figure, the FRSC Sector Commander, Maikano Hassan, said that the incident occurred in front of the Jumat Mosque in Bogobiri in Calabar.

Hassan listed the number of injured to include 21 male adults, three women, two male children and three female children.

The remains of the dead were also deposited in the two hospitals.

According to him, the incident occurred when a Toyota Camry car lost control and rammed into the crowd of on-lookers during the carnival.

Threats won’t stop 2023 polls, INEC assures voters

    • Deploys over 60 per cent of non-sensitive materials
    • Keep off, Commission warns multiple registrants

Next year’s general election will hold as scheduled despite growing challenges, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), said yesterday.

INEC Commissioner and Chairman Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye said the agency has a mandate to comply with the constitutional timelines set for the elections to avoid a legal crisis.

The Commission has been grappling with multiple attacks on its facilities and heightening insecurity.

Okoye, who spoke with The Nation, said: “We are determined to proceed with the election no matter the challenges. It is not easy organizing elections in a country with over 93.5 million registered voters. It is not easy organizing an election in 176,846 polling units spread across difficult and sometimes dangerous geographical terrain.

“We are determined because by section 76(2), 116(2), 132(2) and178 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) elections to the offices of President, Vice-President, Governors, Deputy Governors, and to the membership of the National and State Assemblies shall hold not earlier than one hundred and fifty days and not later than 30 days before the expiration of the term of office of the last holder of that office.

“By section 134 of the Constitution, a candidate for the office of the President must secure the highest number of votes cast in the election and a quarter of the votes cast in two-thirds of all the States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja”.

Okoye noted that by Section 179 of the Constitution, a candidate for the office of the governor must secure the highest number of votes cast in the election and a quarter of the votes cast in two-thirds of all the local government areas of the state.

He said in the default of a candidate meeting the threshold, there must be a second election within 21 days of the result, “and in default, the commission must conduct a third election within 21 days.

“These are strict and immovable timelines embedded in the constitutional and electoral ecosystem. Some of the timelines are cast in stone and immovable. They are not subject to the discretion of the commission or the courts.

“The commission must comply with the timelines and the consequences of failure may be a constitutional and legal crisis that may result in constitutional and democratic reversals.

“We seek the cooperation of all Nigerians and the critical stakeholders. The country is at the bar of a historic election driven by technology and we are determined to get it right.”

The INEC spokesman revealed that the commission had engaged in an internal and external review of the 2019 general election and identified the gaps that must be plugged and challenges that must be overcome ahead of the election.

He said: “Based on our evaluation of the issues, we started planning early and the result of early planning and courageous execution of duties and assignments manifested in the 105 off-cycle elections conducted by the commission since the 2019 general election.

“The commission successfully completed the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) and the display of the register for claims, objections, and complaints. The Commission successfully removed multiple and double registrants as well as malicious registrations from the register. The cleanup of the register is still ongoing.

“The present register of voters is robust, huge and credible and will be used to organise a good election in Nigeria.

“The commission has completed an audit of its local government and strategies stores to identify reusable materials. Minor and major renovation of the offices is ongoing and some have been completed.

“The commission has deployed over 60 per cent of the non-sensitive materials required for the conduct of the 2023 general election to its 774 local government offices and strategic stores.

“Some of the sensitive materials required for the conduct of the election will be ready ahead of the election. The recruitment and training of ad-hoc staff for the election are ongoing.

“The commission is confident of its processes and procedures and will deploy strategically and professionally during the 2023 general election.”

Describing the conduct of ever election as a shared responsibility of all stakeholders, Okoye said the commission wants a secure environment for the voters, materials, and electoral staff.

He said: “We are conscious of the security challenges in different parts of the country and have been assured by the different security agencies under the auspices of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security that they will secure the country for the 2023 general election.

“On our part, we have deployed our Planning, Monitoring, Implementation, Early Warning, and Support tool that allows us to move from a reactive or crisis mode to a proactive mode. We have deployed the 1-SANS which generates real time threat alerts to field assets”, Okoye said.

Giving an update on the ongoing distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), Okoye said collection has been seamless.

“The collection has been progressing well despite hitches on the first day of collection. We urge all duly and validly registered voters to collect their PVCs. These include those that registered before the 2019 general election and did not collect their cards.

“It includes those that carried out transfers and those that applied for new PVCs as a result of loss and damage to their PVCs. It includes those that registered between the 28th of June 2021 and the 31st of July 2022.

“Those that carried out multiple and double registration should stay away from the offices of the commission as the commission did not print their cards.

“Their previous registrations remain valid and they can vote using their valid PVCs. Those that engaged in malicious registrations should keep away from our offices.”

  • 2023: Tinubu will be elected president, says Nnamani

2023: Tinubu will be elected president, says Nnamani

Former Enugu State  Governor Chimaroke Nnamani has restated his preference for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to become Nigeria’s next president.

Nnamani, who represents  Enugu-East in the Senate, insisted that Tinubu would be elected president on February 25 next year.

His views were shared by some members of the Asiwaju Presidential Campaign Council (PCC) who visited his country home in  Agbani in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State on Monday.

The members included former Senate President, Ken Nnamani; APC PCC spokesman in the Southeast,   Josef Onoh;  Onyemuche Nnamani, and  A. C. Udeh.

Nnamani told his guests that it was important for people to know that  his support for  Tinubu’s presidential ambition was not borne out of personal interest but for mainstreaming of Igboland  into Nigeria’s politics.

His words:  ”Come February 25, 2023, Asiwaju Tinubu will be elected the next president of Nigeria. There’s a need for people to know that my choice (for Tinubu) was not for personal reasons but for mainstreaming of the Southeast into Nigeria politics.”

Former Senate President   Nnamani, also restated his own commitment to Tinubu’s presidential bid, stating that it was for the national interest.

Spokesman for  the PCC in Southeast, Josef Onoh hailed the two Nnamani’s for being firm in their support for Tinubu, saying: “ I have always  made it clear that time has come not just for renewed hope for Nigeria but for our future generation.”

He noted that  Senator   Nnamani had remained consistent in abiding by the Asaba, Enugu and Lagos accord of the southern governors that the next president should be of a southern origin.

Onoh said: “I thank Senator Chimaroke Nnamani for standing by that principle and his commitment towards ensuring that Asiwaju emerges the next president of Nigeria.

“Asiwaju as a father has come to a point where he said that what he wants to offer is a better foundation for all parts of the country and I’m with Asiwaju in that course,”

Onoh also praised   Ken Nnamani for engaging in the process that would lead to Tinubu’s victory on  January 25.

“Your commitments to project Nigeria has renewed hope of the Southeasterners’ reintegration and your politics without sentiment is a guide to our people,”  he said.

Meanwhile, Ekiti State  Deputy Governor   Christianah Afuye has assured the  APC PCC  that  Tinubu would secure over 75 percent of the total vote to be cast in the state.

Afuye described Tinubu as an in-law, political leader, and mentor to many great politicians of Ekiti extraction.

The deputy governor spoke in Ikere Local Government Area where she donated cash and consumables to Ogoga-in-council and  11 wards to mark the Christmas and New year festivities.

Describing  Tinubu as one of the best brains and most experienced leaders in the country, she advised the people to get their Permanent Voter Cards “in readiness to vote Asiwaju… because he is our own in Ekiti.”

“I know that Senator Bola Tinubu will visit our Kabiyesi anytime he is here in Ekiti State to campaign. I know Ekiti and Ikere in particular will declare block votes for him. We are not expecting less than 75% of votes for our great leader in Ekiti.

“We all know that Asiwaju is one leader that has the capacity to build and nurture. He did it in Lagos State as a governor. Let us allow him to do it for Nigeria,’” Afuye said in a statement by her Special Assistant (Media), Victor Ogunje.

She said the APC has majority in the National   Assembly would smoothen governance and fast-track progress if  Tinubu became the President.

Shocked Buhari promises justice for slain lawyer

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the police to take the strongest possible action against the officers involved in the killing of Mrs Omobolanle Raheem.

He promised that justice will be served.

The lawyer was shot dead by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) on Christmas day in Lagos.

Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, said in a statement: “President Muhammadu Buhari Monday night condemned the ‘heinous and senseless’ killing of Omobolanle Raheem, a member of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), shot by on-duty policemen on Christmas Day.

“The President said he was deeply shocked and saddened to learn of the brutal killing and directed the police authorities to take ‘the strongest possible action’ against the culprits already held in detention.

“President Buhari said this incident is a stark reminder of the recurring menace of the mishandling of weapons and a wakeup call to law enforcement agencies, including the police, to ensure the full implementation of reforms instituted by the administration on the subject of weapons handling as well as the protection of the rights of citizens.”

Giving assurance that justice would be served, Buhari was quoted as saying: “In this hour of grief, the nation stands in solidarity with the bereaved family and the NBA.

“I assure that justice will be done in this case”.

  • Tinubu’s records stand him out from rivals, says Gbajabiamila

Tinubu’s records stand him out from rivals, says Gbajabiamila

House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila has said the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stands out from his rivals because of his track record.

He said Tinubu’s achievements as the governor of Lagos State for eight years stand him above the others.

According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, Gbajabiamila spoke during a meeting with leaders of Community Development Associations (CDAs) in Surulere, Lagos State on Tuesday.

The Speaker said Nigerians should vote for Tinubu because he is the only candidate that has something to show for what he did in the past.

“Today, they say there are four, three or four front-runner presidential candidates. There was something that I used to say many years ago.

“I used to say it is not by mouth, it is by what you do, the seeds that you’ve sown.

“All the front runners have records; Asiwaju has a record of eight years as governor; Peter Obi has a record of eight years as governor in Anambra; Atiku has a record as Vice President for eight years.

“When you put their records side by side: there is no competition whatsoever. Asiwaju stands tall shoulders above everybody.

“In his (Tinubu’s) case, Lagos is not even like a state; Lagos is like a country in terms of population, in terms of density, in terms of different people in the state and look at what he has been able to do,” he said.

The Speaker said party faithful will persuade voters with Tinubu’s track record.

“This election is the one that we must campaign based on persuasion, for us to go out there and talk to those who are still sitting on the fence, who are persuaded based on religion, or ethnicity.

“Let them be persuaded by records, that is what I want from you.”

She was killed by a policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah on Christmas Day.

The commission, in a statement by the Head, Press and Public Relations Unit, Ikechukwu Ani, said: “PSC has received with shock the news of the unprovoked killing of a harmless Nigerian, a lawyer, Mrs Bolanle Raheem, who was alleged to have been shot and killed by a policeman attached to Ajiwe Police Station Ajah, in Lagos State on Sunday, December 25th, 2022.

Disquiet in PDP over Wike’s, Makinde’s, others’ trip to UK

•G-5 governors on retreat to decide on preferred presidential candidate

There was disquiet in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday as the five aggrieved governors relocated to London to finalise decision on who to back for the presidency in next year’s general election.

Before they left, the governors had foreclosed working for the presidential candidate of their party, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar.

A source said the governors under the aegis of the Integrity Group are now tinkering with the idea of either backing the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, or the flagbearer of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, for the race.

At a private meeting of three of the aggrieved governors with ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, he asked the G-5 to support Obi because no Igbo candidate has been elected president.

The governors, who wanted a winning candidate, have been weighing options on the chances of Tinubu and Obi.

It was learnt that their dilemma was not to back a wrong candidate, which will make PDP and Atiku to mock them.

According to a source, the London meeting was crucial because campaign will peak in January.

Members of the G5 are Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Seyi Makinde (Oyo State), Samuel Ortom (Benue State), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia State) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu State).

They have insisted on PDP National Chairman Iyorchia Ayu’s resignation.

The source said the G-5 governors may kick off campaign on January 5, and they need to firm up decision on the choice of a presidential candidate.

The source said the five governors will run campaign for presidential and governorship elections together, adding that they ought to streamline their position to be able to inform the electorate properly on where they are headed.

The source stressed: “The London meeting is a wrap up session on their preferred presidential candidate who will also be part of the campaign in their respective states.

“Before they left, the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, was already out of their equation. Both Atiku’s running mate, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and Governor Emmanuel Udom did not succeed in prevailing on the G-5 to support the PDP candidate.

“They claimed that Okowa and Udom are parts of the problem in PDP because they refused to abide by the decision of the Southern governors on power shift to the South.

“They have drawn the battle lines with Atiku. They have foreclosed any reconciliation. They will now meet at the poll to settle political scores.

“The G-5 governors have to choose between Tinubu and Obi. They have to consider all options, including the consideration of who has the strength or figures to defeat Atiku in the presidential poll.

“It is no longer about sentiments, but facing the reality on whose figures can add up to win the poll for power shift to the South, which is their ultimate objective.”

Another top source said: “The greatest fear of the G-5 governors is supporting a weak candidate who may lose the presidential election. Then, all their objective, plot and bragging will come to naught.

“Yet, they want to prove a point to PDP that they are a force to reckon with. If they fail to make an impact in 2023 poll, it will spell doom for their political career.

“As politicians, the G-5 governors have been closely monitoring the campaigns and political trends in the country. They will use available statistics at their disposal to determine whether or not to back Tinubu or Obi.”

Findings, however, confirmed that ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo told three of the governors, who paid him a private visit, to work for Obi to give the Igbo a chance to lead the nation.

A close aide of one of the governors said: “Obasanjo made the plea during a private session with Wike, Ortom and Makinde.

“Some of the governors are not for Obi, but they are already aiding him with logistics, including free use of stadia for campaign.

A third source, who has been part of the scheming by the governors, listed the choices before the G-5 in London as follows:

*To endorse Tinubu or Obi and damn the consequences

    * A flat option: To support Tinubu or Obi with resources and the right environment to woo voters in the five states

*Leave every governor to take any decision based on political exigency in each state or zone

    * Refuse to campaign for Atiku and allow the electorate in each state to decide who to vote for.

*Keep their game plan to themselves by waiting till the last minutes before making a pronouncement on their preferred candidate.

  • 2023: Jonathan’s supporters begin campaign for Tinubu in Southsouth, Southeast

2023: Jonathan’s supporters begin campaign for Tinubu in Southsouth, Southeast

    • Group urges Okowa, Southsouth governors to resign

A prominent support group that worked for former President Goodluck Jonathan, Citizens Network for Peace and Development in Nigeria (CNPDN), has begun grassroots mobilisation in the Southeast and the Southsouth for the presidential candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Last month, the group had endorsed Asiwaju Tinubu as their preferred candidate for the February 25, 2023 presidential poll.

The coalition called for the immediate resignation of all Southsouth governors, especially Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, for breaching the agreement of the Southern Governors’ Forum for power shift from the North to the South in 2023.

The pro-Jonathan group kicked off their campaign in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, insisting that the next President must come from the South.

In a statement yesterday in Abuja, the coalition’s National Secretary Francis Okereke Wainwei, who hails from Bayelsa State, said CNPDN unanimously resolved to support and vote for Asiwaju Tinubu in the 2023 general election.

He said the decision of the group for power shift was in alignment with the position of the Northern Governors’ Forum of the APC and the Southern Governors’ Forum, which had agreed that the South should produce the next President.

Wainwei said the coalition’s position was for the promotion of national unity, equity, fairness and justice as its basis for supporting a Southern Presidency in 2023.

“Our position that the next President of this country should come from the South is driven by the same vision and principle that will strengthen the unity and peace of the nation. It will give a better sense of belonging to the people of Southern Nigeria and foster a more viable peaceful co-existence among Nigerians.

“We were, therefore, surprised by the betrayal of the same cause by some of the Southern governors, especially the Southsouth governors, except (Rivers State Governor) Nyesom Wike, who had earlier declared for a Southern President, to abandon same and started pursuing their interests instead of the collective interest of the region.

“We are, therefore, calling on the Southsouth governors who have betrayed their people by supporting another northern candidate to take over from President Buhari after eight years… to resign immediately.

“This is because the people of the Southsouth can no longer trust them with their common heritage as they have placed their interests above the collective interest of their people.

“Our call on them to resign is also premised on the fact that they recently received huge sums of money via the 13 per cent Derivation Fund and squandered same in pursuit of their interests at the expense of their people.

“We are also calling on the Southsouth States’ Houses of Assembly to impeach the said governors, if they fail to resign as requested.

“We shall mobilise our members across the Southsouth states to force the said governors to resign or get impeached. We can’t allow such selfish governors to continue to govern us anymore. We must all place the collective interest of our people above our interests for our region to experience holistic and accelerated development.”

Kanu warns politicians, businessmen against violence in Southeast

Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Leader Nnamdi Kanu has called on  politicians and businessmen  in the  Southeast to stop all forms of violence and tension in the zone

Kanu, who has been in the Department of State Service (DSS) custody since June 2021,  conveyed the message through his lawyers, who visited him last Thursday.

The lawyers, according to a statement yesterday by IPOB spokesman, Emma Powerful, quoted Kanu as expressing concern that some politicians and businessmen recruit criminals to destroy the region and blame it on the group.

Kanu was also said in the statement to have warned  ‘fake’ IPOB members to desist from causing trouble in Igboland.

The statement reads in part: “Our leader issued a stern warning to those who are contracted and bought by the criminals believing that they are IPOB members and Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s disciple to foment trouble in the Eastern region to desist from being agents of destabilisation because they cannot succeed.

“Kanu said that nobody should disturb or threaten the people this festive season.  Our enemies’ plans are to destabilise Igboland using IPOB and ESN’s names as enemies of the Biafra struggle, but they have failed woefully. We  have defeated them completely.”

Kanu also  urged IPOB leadership to ensure that “our land is peaceful and ESN(Eastern Security Network) operatives should focus on making our land peaceful and crime-free this festive season and ordered that anybody seen or caught kidnapping, snatching people’s cars, or terrorising our people in any way should be dealt with.”
