PDP crisis: Wike, Okowa, Ortom in airport drama

The scene was the Makurdi Airport and the dramatis personae were three Peoples Democratic (PDP) governors – Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta).

Ortom, whose mission was to receive the leader of the Group of Five (G-5) aggrieved governors, was the first to arrive at the airport to receive Wike, who was billed to inaugurate the Geographic Information Service Centre built in Makurdi by the Ortom administration.

The aircraft that conveyed Okowa touched down shortly after. He had arrived to await Atiku for a convoy ride to Nasarawa for a scheduled presidential campaign.

Okowa is running mate on the PDP presidential ticket with Atiku.

Then came Ortom, whose mission was to receive the leader of the G-5.

Those at the airport took Ortom’s presence for the return of peace to the PDP, thinking that he was there to welcome the presidential candidate of the party.

Alighting from the plane, Okowa and Ortom exchanged pleasantries.

But the Benue governor was heard asking Okowa: “So, you people will come to my state without telling me?”

A moment later, Ortom swiftly moved towards a landing jet to receive the person on board. The person turned out to be his guest – Wike.

The duo hopped into a waiting vehicle and zoomed off.

About 20 minutes later, Atiku, alongside the PDP national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, and other members of the presidential campaign council, arrived at Makurdi Airport.

He was only received by Okowa and other PDP chieftains.

But, there was a twist to the Makurdi Airport drama as aides to the PDP presidential running mate said it was actually the Delta governor that avoided his Rivers counterpart.

A top aide, who did not want to his name in print, said: “When Ortom arrived at the airport, he met Okowa who had just landed in Makurdi.

“The two governors exchanged banters and Okowa told Ortom that he and other, were waiting for the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku, whose flight was being expected to land anytime soon.

“That was when Ortom pointed it out to Okowa that it was against protocol for the Delta governor and Atiku to enter his state without the courtesy of informing him.

“While the two governors were still discussing, another aircraft carrying Governor Wike arrived and Governor Ortom left for the tarmac to receive the Rivers governor.

“Governor Okowa, who was in one of the cars parked at the airport waiting for Atiku’s arrival, did not come out to exchange greetings with Governor Wike, even though he saw him coming out of the airport with Ortom.

“It was apparent that Okowa deliberately avoided Wike for whatever reasons.”

Inaugurating the N6.5 billion Benue Geographic Information Service Centre, Wike said the project will substantially reduce land administration-related problems in the state.

He said: “With BENGIS, cases of missing files are things of the past, as it will also impact more on the state’s internally generated revenue. Ortom is a man of taste and quality, given the completion of this project.”

Wike called on the people of Benue North West senatorial zone to vote for Ortom, whom he described as a man of quality and integrity that fights injustice and marginalisation.

Ortom noted that since the commencement of the BENGIS project, the land digitisation initiative has greatly improved urban planning, infrastructure development, environmental management and encouraged private investment.

“With the commissioning of the historic project today, we have achieved the International Best Practice in land administration in the state. I am optimistic that this project will attract the World Bank’s Grant of $2.5 million through SFTAS programme to be applied for developmental projects in the state,” he said.

Fed Govt to resume mass prosecution of Boko Haram suspects, says Malami

    • CJ knocks National Assembly over Electoral Act’s amendment

    • 135,592 cases pending at FHC

The Federal Government will soon resume the mass prosecution of Boko Haram suspects being held in selected military formations, the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, has said.

Malami, who spoke yesterday in Abuja during a special court session to mark the new legal year (2022/2023) of the Federal High Court, said President Muhammadu Buhari had approved funds for the exercise.

The AGF, who was represented by the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Justice, Mrs. Beatrice Jedy-Agba, hailed the Judiciary for its contribution to stabilising the nation’s democracy.

The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, faulted the National Assembly for amending the Electoral Act without inputs from the Judiciary.

“By virtue of sections 29 (5) and 84(14) of the Act (Electoral Act 2022), exclusive jurisdiction is foisted on the Federal High Court in the hearing and determination of pre-election complaints.

“Linked to that jurisdiction is Section 285(10) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended), which provides that such pre-election cases must be concluded within 180 days from the date of filing of the suit.

“This is notwithstanding the judges’ existing ‘high-volume’ dockets that present enormous challenges.

“It is necessary to place on record that the Electoral (Amendment) Act 2022 was enacted without any consultation with the court.

“Also, no support whatsoever was provided to address the increased responsibility. This weighed heavily on the operations of the court,” Justice Tsoho said.

“As at today, a total of 1,838 pre-election cases were filed in the court, out of which 1,285 cases have been disposed of, leaving a total of 556 cases pending,” he said.

On the court’s performance in relation to other cases in the last legal year, Justice Tsoho said: “The 2020/2021 legal year officially closed in July 2021 with a total number of 131,821 cases pending at the end of that legal year and carried over to the 2021/2022 legal year (that is, September 2021 – June 2022).

“Within that legal year, a total of 17,677 cases were filed, while the total number of cases disposed of was 13,906.

“When this is added to the total number cases carried over from the previous year, which is 131,821, we have a total of 135,592 cases pending at the end of the legal year.”

“This comprises 41,788 civil cases; 31,832 criminal cases; 39,799 motions and 22,173 fundamental rights enforcement applications pending at the end of the legal year,” Justice Tsoho said.

The representative of the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), expressed concern that election cases were consuming courts’ time at the detriment of other cases.

Awomolo suggested the creation of a special court to deal with election and related cases. The BOSAN official said such court was provided for under Section 250 of the 1995 Construction proposed by the Sani Abacha military government.

He noted that “normal cases inevitably had to suffer adjournments, thereby frustrating good and urgent causes”.

Awomolo added: “With all humility, we have reached a stage when very urgently, the Parliament, Judiciary and stakeholders in the administration of justice should consider the establishment of National Constitutional Court of Nigeria.

“The Constitutional Court is one that will handle all constitutional, political and election matters. It will be a federal court, of the status of a High Court with divisions in all the states of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

“The court will have unlimited jurisdiction to determine all causes relating to or connected with interpretation of the Constitution, enforcement of fundamental rights of the citizens, determination as to whether any person has been lawfully elected into any office – from the President to the governors and members of all the Legislative houses.

“The court will be like the National Industrial Court of Nigeria that exercises jurisdiction on matters related to employment and other industrial-related matters.

“All the decisions of the court will be appealable to the Court of Appeal and all appeals end at the Court of Appeal.

“There will no longer be the need to take away about 500 judges from their normal court responsibilities to sit on election tribunals all over the country.

“We have enough human resources to serve the Court in all capacity,” he said.

Awomolo noted that such courts exist and function effectively in other countries, like India, South Africa, South Korea, Egypt, Zambia, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Italy, and Germany.

UPDATED: Panic in Abakaliki over gunmen invasion

There was panic in Abakaliki, capital of Ebonyi State on Monday following rumors of gunmen invasion of the city causing residents to run for their lives.

Residents opened for normal business activities when rumours of the invasion by gurnmen said to be implementing the five-day sit-at-home declared by pro-separatist groups in the southeast filtered in.

The sit-at-home, which was denied by Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB), was said to have been declared by Finland-based Simon Ekpa.

The situation led to a rowdy situation in the city with traders forced to close their shops and retire to their homes.

Many others took refuge in hotels and anywhere they could find or fear of running into the gunmen.

Ababaliki was fully deserted as citizens scampered for safety while thousands of traders abruptly closed their shops for fear of being killed.

An eyewitness, Chidebere, said the gunmen invaded Ahia-Ohuru market and started shooting sporadically to scare people away.

According to him: “People who were around saw the unknown gunmen who rode on two motorcycles, with guns. They were shooting anyhow to scare people away. They even burnt down a shop belonging to a woman. They saw the woman bringing out her goods outside, they met her and told her to close the shop.

“The woman was asking them, what offense did she commit? Before you knew it, they poured fuel on the shop and set it ablaze. They were four in number.”

A source, who pleaded anonymity said he had to run into a hotel to take refuge.

“I am taking refuge in a hotel now. I went to buy a recharge card opposite government house when I saw people running.

“People hurriedly parked their things inside their shops while traffic Policemen on duty opposite government house immediately changed their clothes.

“I drove out of that area following heavy gunshots to Kpirikpiri where the road is deserted. People have parked their things inside their shops along that old Enugu road. If you are still in your houses, remain there untill calm returns”, the source said.

Videos and pictures seen on social media showed people running in different directions.

Another source said he had to run to a friend’s house for safety on hearing gunshots.

“I am also taking refuge at my friend’s abode. I ran from site(mechanic village), just before Spera-in-doe junction, I heard gunshots and people were running for safety. I managed to get to Agwu street from convent road”, the source said.

But Police spokesperson , Chris Anyanwu debunked allegations of shootings by gunmen in the city.

In a terse message he said: “Rumours of killing/burning within the metropolis renting the air. There is no cause for alarm. Ebonyi State is calm. However, if anything in the contrary is confirmed, I will come up with update/briefs, pls.”

Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State, Aliyu Garba said there was no invasion by gunmen in the State.

He asked the citizens of the State to remain calm.

Garba noted further that he had deployed hundreds of police officers to go on patrol, looking for the said unknown gunmen.

But Ebonyi State Government confirmed the attack by gunmen on a provision shop at Ahịa Ofu market.

SSpecial Security Consultant (SSC) to the State Government, Stanley Okoro Emegha, stated this in a statement.

He urged the people to go about their businesses as the city is safe and under control of security agencies

“This is to inform all Government officials, civil servants as well as the general public to confidently go about their lawful engagements as what just happened in Ebonyi State was misconstrued and escalated by unscrupulous elements to cause panic and apprehension among the peace loving people”.

“For clarity purposes, it was a gang of hoodlums that invaded Ahiaofuru along Abakaliki/Enugu Highway where they partially attacked a provision shop causing a stir around the axis,” he said.

Emegha noted that no life was lost as being circulated by rumour mongers and enemies of the state.

He said all Government functions still stand as scheduled because the state is fully and absolutely under control.

“The men of Ebubeagu and other security agencies have been drafted to strategic locations while others are on patrol to further secure the citizens and their properties.

“Please, be rest assured that our men are tracking down on them and very soon they will be arrested and prosecuted according to the law”, he said. Ends

•‘Tinubu/Shettima ticket will be fair to all’
•I’ll reset economy for faster growth, says Tinubu
•President drums up support for APC candidates

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has said there is no justification for retaining the Presidency in the North in 2023.

He urged those protesting against the same faith ticket to ponder on the neglect of zoning or rotation of the president between the North and the South.

The governor said those saying that the country is not ripe for Muslim-Muslim ticket should be courageous to decry the abolition of presidential zoning in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike spoke yesterday at the special dedication service for the Rivers State PDP 2023 General Election Campaign Rallies, which held at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Port Harcourt, the state capital.

Also yesterday, All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu promised to be fair to all Nigerians, irrespective of their religious inclinations.

Wike, in a statement by his Special Assistant, Media, Kelvin Ebiri, maintained that persons involved in doublespeak were trying to hoodwink some gullible few.

He said such individuals knew that they were insulting the sensibility of well-meaning Nigerians, who desired a united country to advance national cohesion.

Wike said: “You play on people’s intelligence; you say Nigeria is not ripe for Muslim-Muslim ticket, I agree. But Nigeria is ripe for presidency to remain in one zone? I mean, just look at the insult. You blow hot and cold.”

The governor asked people condemning the Muslim-Muslim ticket to also know that Nigerians were also against the retention of the presidency in the North after President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said: “Most of you just sit there, you don’t ask yourselves questions. Somebody continues to sell this kind of cheap ideas. You don’t ask the person. I agree with what you are saying, but look at what we are saying here.

“Your party wants the presidency to go to the same zone where President Muhammadu Buhari is coming from. Who is cheating who?”

The Rivers governor also reminded the church of the need to participate in the voting process.

He, however, warned them against serving as cannon fodder to any political party or actor.

Wike pleaded with the church to be careful and resist those politicians, who came to mobilise them as if there was a religious war to wage.

He said: “It is not now that politics have come, you want to come and tell the church a different story for your own personal interest.”

Tinubu: I will be fair to all

Tinubu promised to be fair and just to all Nigerians, irrespective of race, religion and creed, if elected in next year’s election.

He also pledged to retool the economy for the benefit of Nigerians.

Tinubu gave the commitment in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, during a town hall meeting with Muslim leaders from the Southwest geopolitical zone.

The President-General of the League of Imams and Alfas of Yorubaland Sheikh Kewulere Bello advised Tinubu to tackle the menace of insecurity and unemployment across the country when elected.

He advised Tinubu to tackle insecurity and unemployment, if elected.

He said: “There have been kidnapping cases in the country. Please, help us to tackle it.

“Secondly, our children have gone to school, they have graduated, and most of them have no jobs. We want you to help us to provide jobs for them when you get there.

“We also want you to help us to tackle the problem of ethnic rivalries in the country. This is our third request.”

Addressing the clerics, he promised to be “a fair and just leader”, adding: “My pledge for fairness and justice is consistent with the tenets of the Islamic faith.”

He stressed: “A leader in a plural society like ours is enjoined to be a leader of all. If elected, I shall govern honestly and democratically in harmony with our nation’s constitution.”

A statement by his media aide, Tunde Rahman, in Abuja said Tinubu cited his excellent stewardship as Lagos State governor and promised to use that experience to lead Nigeria in the “same spirit of innovation and pragmatic vision to uplift the nation and renew the hope of Nigerians.”

He described the 2023 general elections as “Nigeria’s momentous encounter with destiny”, urging the clerics to educate their followers on the importance of voting only for tested candidates with track records of excellent public service, “and not falling for the lies and gimmicks of those that have nothing to offer.”

Tinubu, who spoke in English and Yoruba, said: “This election season has been a hybrid of facts and falsehood, truth and lies. I would like the election to be one based on facts and truth.

“What is a candidate’s record of performance and what are his policies? I ask you to urge your followers to come out and vote and to do so wisely. Vote for a candidate that has a vision for a peaceful, prosperous Nigeria where tolerance and compassion undergird our constitutional and legal rights.”

On security, Tinubu vowed to end terror, kidnappings and other violent crimes by recruiting more personnel that would be trained and retrained, in addition to providing more security tools and gadgets for an effective fight against criminal elements.

The nation’s economy, according to Tinubu, would be diversified and restructured towards achieving at least six per cent growth annually.

These goals, he promised, would be achieved through the reforms of the country’s industrial policy, infrastructural enhancement, power sector innovation and significant budgetary reforms.

Tinubu said: “Regarding the economy, we seek to repair the very structure of the economy. We can no longer flourish as an economy based on natural resource extraction.

“We must become a dynamic, diversified economy where those who want to work can find a good job. But let us also be a society sufficiently compassionate to help those who cannot help themselves.

“We must revive manufacturing and industrial growth to create jobs as well as produce the goods and services that improve the daily lives of the average person.

“We seek a minimum of six per cent growth annually through reform of our industrial policy, infrastructural enhancement, power sector innovation and significant budgetary reform.”

On his plan for the agricultural sector, the APC standard bearer promised to guarantee food security through enhanced productivity and improved farm incomes to ensure that no child goes to bed without food to eat.

He said: “In the end, may no Nigerian parent send a child to bed hungry, despairing about what tomorrow might bring. Instead, let all of our children, regarding of their faith or creed, be able to lay their head down believing in a better tomorrow of hope renewed.”

Tinubu commended religious leaders in the country for their continued prayers and sermons, which he noted, had contributed to unity and peaceful coexistence.

He urged Nigerians to collect their Permanent Voters Cards (PVC) and vote for him, saying a single vote in democracy can determine who wins an election.

“I’m the only one that can do it, God will help me to fulfil all my promises to Nigerians, God is our pathfinder, God will set my foot to the right path when I get there,” he assured.

He commended Northern governors who insisted that power must shift to the South, saying he didn’t believe it initially until it became a reality.

“There was commotion when I said it’s my turn. One thing is for someone to say ‘It’s my turn’, another is for God to answer the prayer. Only God enthrones. I don’t just want to get there but to render service to humanity,” he said.

Tinubu said if elected, there would be loans for traders and there would be commodity market which would serve as an avenue for selling their goods and services.

His words: “There will also be stable power supply, Nigeria started with India in terms of electricity, India has moved forward, it is not as if they are wiser than us. Our education sector will also be taken care of, there wouldn’t be any strike in the public institution if I emerge.

“Is not good not to have doctors and equipment in our hospitals. I want to assure you that if I’m elected with your votes as the president, health of Nigerians will be prioritised.”

Folarin said though he has been having interaction with Muslim leaders across the state, they should do more by supporting the APC presidential candidate.

He said: “We are not here to market Tinubu because he is a Muslim, but his track record and capacity speak for him compared with other candidates.”

Folarin also thanked northern leaders for their role in power shift to the South.

Hamzat said only the person that knows the way should be followed, saying his past achievements distinguished him from other candidates.

He said Tinubu’s achievement in Lagos is the good reason for Nigerians to vote him as president, adding that solutions to the country’s problem are already explained in Tinubu’s manifesto christened: “Renewed Hope”.

The National Chief Missioner of Anwar-ur- Deen Movement, Sheikh Ahmad Abdulrahman, said the gathering was not to campaign or endorse Tinubu or any candidate, but ask whether Asíwájú Tinubu can still deliver for the country as he did as governor of Lagos State.”

Tinubu was accompanied to the meeting by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr Femi Hamzat, the APC governorship candidate in Oyo State, Senator Teslim Folarin, former House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, Deputy Director-General of his campaign, Hadiza Bala Usman, Senator Fatai Buhari from Oyo State, former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan; Malam Nuhu Ribadu; Akeem Adeyemi; Dr. Yunus Akintunde; son of former Governor of Oyo State, Olamiju Akala; and other APC candidates.

Muslim leaders at the meeting include Secretary-General, League of Imams and Alfas of Yorubaland, Sheikh Ahmad Aladesawe; MUSWEM pioneer Executive Secretary, Prof Dawud Noibi; the National chairman, JIBWIS, Sheikh Dr Abdullahi Bala Lau; Sheikh Abdulfatah Thani, and Alh. Mutiu Oladejo.

The APC candidate had earlier interfaced with Bishops from Pentecostal Churches in the 19 states of the North and the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, where he delivered a similar message as he did to the Muslim leaders of Southwest.

He had told the Christian leaders that if elected, he would run an inclusive government that will be blind to ethnicity and religion, but fair and equitable to all Nigerians.

President Muhammadu Buhari has urged the people of Katsina State, especially Dumurkol and Daura, to vote for Tinubu.

The President, who spoke at the governorship campaign of the Katsina candidate, Dikko Radda, in Dumurkol, also charged them to vote for other candidates. He said voting the party from top to bottom would be a way of appreciating the party for giving the leadership of the country to one of them for good eight years.

Represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, the President said anyone who had defected from the party to another party should not deserve their vote because the person had left the platform that honoured both Daura and Katsina State by presenting Buhari as candidate twice and successfully.

Shehu said he had no doubt the ongoing campaign is a journey of success, adding: “I work with some people in the campaign train and they proved that they have capacity and they will never fail.

“Coming to campaign here is just to thank the people of Dumurkol because they need no lecture on whom to vote for to succeed President Buhari in 2023.”

Shehu added: “President Buhari said, ‘vote for Asiwaju and Shettima, Dikko Radda and Jobe for governor and also vote for Nasiru Sani as your senator and other legislators’.

“Vote for APC from top to bottom. Whoever comes here after decamping to another party and says he is with President Buhari, he is not with President Muhammadu Buhari.

“Every individual from Dumurkol or Daura or Katsina will market APC and anybody contesting under any other party should not be campaigned for because Nigeria has given Dumurkol, Daura and Katsina State what other states wanted to have and they never got because over 200 million Nigerians chose someone from this domain to lead the country for eight years.

“Nigerians have done everything to this community, Daura and Katsina State. So, nobody can shame him here.

“President Buhari has done everything to Daura and Katsina State. Just yesterday, we were on the road when I saw a trailer with a load of irons for railway tracks to be laid from Daura to Katsina, to Maradi and by God’s grace, by the end of this administration, train services will start from Kano to Daura.”

The District Head of Dumurkol, who is President Buhari’s nephew, Alhaji Musa Haro, assured Nigerians that the people of Daura and Katsina State will vote massively for Tinubu.

Haro also said they will vote Dr. Dikko Radda for governor, describing him as the only credibleble governorship candidate for 2023 election in the state.

“I know Dikko Radda for over 30 years when we were in Kaduna back in 1993. He is humble, honest and a very good person and he values relationships and can govern Katsina very well.

“He was a local government chairman under the late Governor Yar’Adua. He was the first chairman that constructed a road, more than 20 kilometres. He built schools, and hospitals and started women empowerment.

“Dr Dikko has the capacity. He was the Director-General of SMEDAN (Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria). Look at what he did across the country; the people of Katsina State are very lucky to have such a credible person as a candidate under APC.

He is a PhD holder, a lecturer and a career banker. So, he has all the qualities. Look at what happened during the primary, about nine aspirants contested for the ticket on the platform of APC, but the people decided.

On Tinubu, Alhaji Haro said: “We don’t even need Tinubu to come to Katsina. Look at what he did in Lagos, look at his network across the country.

“When he was a governor in Lagos, he transformed the state. So, I believe it’s just a tradition, Asiwaju has to come to Katsina for campaign, but in our base here in Katsina, take it from me, Asiwaju is going to win with a high number of vote Insha Allah.”

The APC governorship candidate, Dr Radda Dikko, promised to transform the state, empower women and youth and provide infrastructure development across the state.

    •‘Tambuwal’s overture to Ortom futile’
•I won’t vote for Atiku, PDP chieftain vows

Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Deputy National Chairman Chief Olabode George has said nobody can break the rank of G-5 governors and their allies who are protesting inequality and injustice in the opposition party.

He said yesterday’s visit by Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal to his Benue counterpart, Sam Ortom, who is a member of the Integrity Group, was in vain.

Tambuwal, who was in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, told reporters after a private meeting with Ortom, that his mission was to consult with his colleagues on the way forward on the crisis rocking the PDP.

Also yesterday, the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, said he was waiting to reconcile with Wike, who he claimed to have met five times.

Atiku, who spoke at a a Town Hall meeting organised by Channels Television, said: “I have personally met Wike twice in Port Harcourt; twice in Abuja and once in London.”

Other members of the G-5 are: Governors Nyesom Wike (Rivers State), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).

The governors have shunned the PDP presidential campaigns, insisting that they will not support Atiku, unless the national chairman, Senator Iyiocha Ayu, resigns.

George said the aggrieved five governors and their allies have resolved to stand by equity, fairness and justice to the end.

He said: “Divide and rule cannot work. Governor Ortom will not agree. He is a reasonable person.”

George, who spoke on phone, described the presidential candidate, Atiku, as an insincere person, wondering how a person who cannot restructure his party should be promising restructuring to the country.

He said he will not vote for him and he will not stop talking until the injustice in the party is addressed.

George said: “Our rank cannot be broken. Let the governor of Sokoto go to any where he likes. We will stand by justice.”

Justifying the stand of G-5, he added: “The Director-General of the campaign is from Sokoto, Northwest. The national chairman is from Northcentral.  The presidential candidate is from Adamawa, Northeast.

“The acting chairman of BoT is from Southeast. The vice presidential candidate is from Southsouth. There is nothing for the Southwest. And you are fooling us. Which rank do they want to break? He cannot do restructuring in his party. He is promising restructuring for Nigeria. He is disrespecting Yoruba. We are standing by the truth. I won’t vote for him and I will not stop talking.”

George alleged that certain forces in the PDP have been denying Yoruba its sense of belonging, adding that their promises at campaigns are illusory.

Lamenting that Southwest has not filled the slot of national chairman in PDP since 1998, he said: “The first chairman, Chief Solomon Lar, came from Northcentral. Chief Barnabas Gemade is from Benue, Northcentral. Chief Audu Ogbeh is Benue, Northcentral. Dr. Ahmadu Ali is from Northcentral. Baraje is from Northcentral. Ayu is from Benue, Northcentral.

“Southwest has not served as chairman before. They have disregard, disrespect and dishonour for Southwest. We will not accept it. The Southwest is cut off from decision making organs of the party. It is sad. We cannot be slaves.”

George said he is not fighting a personal battle, pointing out that he is already an old man and a party elder.

He said: “What do I want again? But, it must be given to the Southwest. We have competent people who can we chairman.”

Ortom: Crisis can’t be solved by me alone

Ortom told Tambuwal that he alone cannot solve the PDP crisis without the involvement of his colleagues.

Speaking with reporters, shortly after his meeting with Ortom at Benue State House Makurdi, Tambuwal said:” I spoke with Governor Ortom on the way forward. I believe we can come out of the PDP crisis more stronger as a party, because the issues at stake are summontable.”

The Sokoto governor said he will also meet with other aggrieved governors as part of effort to douse tension in the party and present a common front ahead of next year’s general election.

Ortom blamed leaders of the PDP for failing to nip in the bud the crisis, shortly after the PDP convention.

The governor said he told his guest that if their conditions are met, peace will return to PDP.
