    • PDP stalwarts absent at Lagos rally

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has promised to privatise the nation’s three refineries to raise $10 billion for the empowerment of small and medium scale businesses (SMEs) in the country.

Atiku, who said this while addressing a campaign rally yesterday in Lagos, listed the refineries as those in Warri, Port Harcourt and Kaduna.

The former Vice President said he would follow the privatization through, if elected President next year.

He said: “On my own part, if you elect me as your president, I said and I promise by the grace of God that I am going to set aside $10 billion so that we can empower our young men and women in small and medium enterprises.

“People were asking me where I am going to get the money. If I privatise the Port Harcourt refinery, Warri refinery, and Kaduna refinery, I will get the money.”

The PDP candidate also promised that his administration would restructure the country, if elected President in 2023.

“So, let me also promise you, if you elect me, we are going to restructure this country. What do we mean by restructuring? We will give states and local governments more powers and resources. It is up to you to hold them responsible.”

Also, Notable PDP leaders were conspicuously absent at the party’s presidential candidate’s rally at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos, yesterday.

The leaders included the former National Deputy Chairman (South) of the party, Chief Olabode George.

Also absent were the five governors of the party, popularly called the G-5 governors, led by Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike.

Others members of the group are: Governors Seyi Makinde (Oyo State), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Egwuayi (Enugu).

Also, the state chairman of the party, Phillip Alvoji, was not seen at the event.

But addressing members of the party at the event, Atiku also said his government would ensure full autonomy for the state and local governments.

He urged the PDP members to protect their votes and not to succumb to any form of intimidation.

The PDP vice presidential candidate and Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa said Atiku is the only acceptable presidential candidate to Nigerians.

“Atiku is tested and he means well for the country. We want a Lagos State that works for all, not working for the rich and the poor getting poorer. Atiku is the only candidate of all the contestants that will return the lost glory of Nigeria,” he said.

    • Chatham House hosts APC candidate
    • El-Rufai, Wale Edun, Gbajabiamila, Ayade, Alake, Beta Edu speak

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu yesterday spoke on how he will tackle insecurity and reposition the economy if elected in next year’s election.

He also emphasised that under his administration, Nigeria will maintain its leadership role of advancing democratic values in the West Africa sub-region, in the continent and in the world.

The former Lagos State governor reiterated his commitment to the sanctity of the ballot box, saying the next crop of leaders should evolve from free, fair, democratic and transparent elections.

Tinubu highlighted his plans for Nigeria at the Chatham House, London, while delivering a lecture titled: “Nigeria’s 2023 election: Security, economy and foreign policy imperatives.”

He was accompanied to the United Kingdom’s elite foreign and policy think-tank institution by members of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, including governors, members of the National Assembly and other key party stalwarts.

At the session, Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai, House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, former Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy Dele Alake, one-time Lagos State Commissioner for Finance Wale Edun and National Women Leader Dr. Beta Edu shed light on Tinubu’s manifesto, ‘Renewed Hope for 2023,’ particularly those aspects related to their areas of competence.

The eminent politician was accompanied by Governors Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Babajide Sanwo-Olu (Lagos), Abubakar Sani Bello (Niger), Ben Ayade (Cross River), Abubakar Badaru, (Jigawa) and David Umahi (Ebonyi); former Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi, ex-Edo State Governor Adams Oshiomhole; Deputy National Women Leader Hajiya Zainab Ibrahim, former Lagos State Deputy Governor Chief Femi Pedro, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, Senator Fatai Buhari and Senator Adeola Olamilekan.

Also in the entourage were Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, former Ogun State Deputy Governor Segun Adesegun, Hadiza Bala-Usman and Alhaji Mutiu Are.

It was his second visit to Chatham House, having participated in a lecture there in 2011.

Exuding confidence, Tinubu demonstrated a mastery of governance principles, the challenges of the post-Buhari period and how to tackle them.

The APC candidate said: “I have confidence that the Nigerian people will go to polls in a few short months and give me their mandate.”

His address was intermittently punctuated by thunderous applause from dignitaries who were captivated by his candour and the message.

While introducing Tinubu, the chairman of the event, Dr. Alex Vines, described him as a prominent politician who is no stranger to the House.

Referring to the fake news by opponents that the candidate was denied a US visa, Vines, who is also the Managing Director, Ethics, Risk and Resilience of Chatham House, and Director Africa Programme, said: “He(Tinubu) has a US visa.”

Shortly before the commencement of the lecture, a few subjective protesters, led by Reno Omokiri, stormed the venue to demonstrate against Tinubu.

However, they were overwhelmed by the presence of APC faithful and supporters, who sang the popular caucus song: “On your mandate we stand, Bola.”

After the lecture, the APC standard bearer had an interaction with the APC UK chapter.

‘We’ll tackle insecurity from the roots’

Tinubu lamented that insecurity has persisted despite the remarkable progress achieved by the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

He said if elected, he will tackle the crisis so that Nigeria can also effectively provide security support for its neighbouring nations.

Tinubu said: “The challenges which have manifested themselves with regard to our national and regional development and security trajectories are very well-known to all of us here: radical extremist violence, terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, human trafficking, trafficking in weapons, trafficking in drugs, climate change and resource-driven conflicts etc.

“Mostly manifesting initially as national problems, these challenges evolved over time into trans-border and multinational challenges.

“We see the thousands of people who have been internally displaced at home or forced into refugee camps abroad. With farming activities disrupted, we have seen shortages of basic food items and food price inflation that are further undermining human security.

“To respond meaningfully to the discontents and to redress the many dislocations arising from them, we must begin by reminding ourselves of that old dictum: Foreign policy is but a continuation of domestic policy.

“As a first step, we must recalibrate domestic policy in order to revamp the foundation on which our quest to pursue human security rests.”

    ‘Power outage will end’

Tinubu identified regular electricity as the key to economic revitalisation and industrial growth, promising to improve the framework already in place for boosting energy generation and distribution.

He said: “Fixing the perennial riddle of energy supply is another priority. There is no version of the world where Nigeria’s ambitions for itself can be achieved without solving the problem of how to provide energy to homes and businesses across the country.

“It is time to recognise that the centralised approach to energy policy and infrastructure is not an optimal arrangement and is unlikely to improve by mere tinkering around the sides.

“The Federal Government as regulator and operator, and price fixer is a broken model and one that we fully intend to fix if elected.

“We have privatised power distribution in Nigeria and generation to a certain degree. What we need to do, going forward, is to improve the enabling environment and further reform the legal and regulatory framework to attract more private investments in the sector as we have experienced in the telecom industry.”

Acknowledging the place of agriculture in economic development, Tinubu said: “The present administration has invested heavily in agriculture, providing loans and expanding the country’s total acreage of cultivated land.

“We will build on this, but our focus will be on using technology and expertise to accelerate growth and development by providing the critical infrastructure necessary to achieve the commodity transformations in the agriculture value chain.”

Read Also: I’m confident Nigerians will vote for me, I’m ready to lead — Tinubu

He added: “Roads, rail, access to ports, and storage infrastructure are what we require to radically transform the agriculture sector and increase its value to the nation.

“Providing these will be the areas of our focus so that the full potential of our agro-economy can be achieved, and we can reap the benefits in jobs, improved economic opportunities and increased prosperity.”

‘Economic to be driven by private sector’

Tinubu promised to engage the private sector to drive economic development.

He said: “My belief that the private sector is the fulcrum of economic progress is evident and documented.

“However, fundamental flaws with the basic design of our national economy imperil the private sector from playing the role it ought to and adding the value it is capable of.

“In this instance, the government must act as a catalyst. We shall do this on all fronts. We will address the conflict between monetary and fiscal policies.

“Budgeting will be based on the projected spending levels needed to push real annual growth rate above seven per cent while reducing the unemployment rate so that we can double the economy in ten years.”

To Tinubu, Nigeria, which has experienced democratic rule for 23 years, should continue to be a beacon of hope to the continent and West Africa sub-region.

He said Nigeria will continue to lead by example in free and fair elections devoid of violence, emphasising that the will of the people should always prevail.

Tinubu stressed: “I stand firmly against all forms of electoral violence and intimidation. Having spent most of my career in the political opposition, I have long fought against electoral malpractice and any attempts to extinguish the legitimate choice of voters. I will continue to do so.

“I urge all my fellow contestants in this election to do the same. Let the sovereign will of the people decide the path of our nation. And let this election be determined by voters making their choice freely rather than the domineering intimidation of the troublesome few.”

Drawing a link between peace in Nigeria and political stability in the sub-region, which is troubled by military intervention, Tinubu said the country must always be its brother’s keeper.

He said: “The Nigerian elections of 2023 are coming up at a time when the country’s immediate geographical neighbourhood of West and Central Africa is undergoing serious political turmoil that has manifested itself in the incursion of the military to power in a number of countries.

“In spite of the legitimate concerns being expressed by observers, Nigerians are resolutely committed to democracy, regardless of their political differences.”

On his age and identity, Tinubu said his birthday was March 29, 1952, adding that his records are with his alma mater, Chicago State University, United States, and Mobil Oil, where he worked as treasurer.

He said: “At the time of birth, I was born march 29, 1952 in the family record.

“I have good exposure in life, my record is consistent. For the school and university I attended, the records are there. The transcript is also there.

“I’m not claiming another father, I am Tinubu and Tinubu proper. If they want DNA, they can as well request that. Chicago State University where I graduated has attested to that (education).

“I’ve received my original replacement certificate from them. Deloitte trained me, and Mobil Oil has also attested to my record. I got to the pinnacle of my career. Who among them can brag about that?

“You want to wrestle with the pig, you need to live with dirt. I got into politics knowing that it is muddy water, one has to live with the dirt.

“I see myself as a marketable individual. They want to use me to make money, and I say no.”

On youth development, he said youths were part of today and the future, adding that the country should invest in them.

He singled out Sanwo-Olu, who he described as a youth running the 5th largest economy in Africa and building on his legacies as former governor of Lagos State.

    No assurance on Diaspora voting

Tinubu, who said that Nigerians in the Diaspora should be entitled to vote, noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was yet to give an assurance that the electronic transmission of election results is reliable.

On his plans for diaspora voting, he said: “If you make contributions to the economy with the remittances that you are making, your right to vote should not be abrogated but promoted.

“However, we are still building confidence in our democratic and voting system. INEC is still yet to assure us during this election that electronic transmission; the technology being used for accreditation, and the total votes count is reliable, dependable and assuring in our democratic process before we introduce a complicated element of the ballot.”

Demonstrating his team spirit, Tinubu asked El-Rufai, Ayade, Alake and Edu to respond to questions that fell within their areas of core competence.

    El-Rufai: How to restore security

El-Rufai, who answered questions on security, stated that banditry, terrorism, separatism, and oil theft require a new approach including increasing the number of security operatives.

“The numbers must change and the Bola Tinubu administration already has a blueprint which is embedded in our action plan to address this.

“We will scale up the numbers of the armed forces. We’ll ramp up not only the numbers but the training and the equipment,” the Kaduna governor said.

Alake answered the question of how Tinubu plans to lift Nigerians out of poverty if elected and also curb oil theft in six months. “The key to his policy for increasing economic growth is to enable the private sector to make the investment that will increase productivity, grow the economy, create jobs, and reduce poverty,” he said.

Gbajabiamila responded to the question on the strategies of Tinubu on defence; the APC national women’s leader answered the question on healthcare delivery, and how to convert brain drain into a gain for the country, amongst others.

Tinubu has a bright chance at the poll, says Alake

Alake, who was also featured on Channels Television Politics Today, yesterday said Tinubu’s public engagement has exposed those peddling falsehoods about his health.

Alake said from the reviews gotten so far were positive, and the engagement has shown that Tinubu is flawless and faultless.

He also explained why Tinubu also asked his team members to answer questions, saying that was one of the attributes of a good leader.

He said: “The engagement of our presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been inviting, reinvigorating, superlative and reassuring.

“Tinubu has disproved all the naysayers. Asiwaju has been applauded and commended by all and sundry. All the reviews we have gotten so far are positive. He was flawless and faultless in his delivery.”

On Tinubu’s team spirit, Alake said: “Delegating people on his team to answer questions was one of the innovations of Tinubu.

“Don’t forget that one of his main strengths has been identifying talents and head-hunting of the highest order.

“Asiwaju is a team builder and that is what he has been showcasing. Again, Asiwaju has shown that he is a leader.

“So, those who fault that style of leadership are ignorant of the nuance and dynamics of leadership. Leadership is not a one-man show.”

Alake noted that some of his opponents were trying to copy Tinubu, but said they can’t get it because they don’t have a team like Tinubu.

“Asiwaju spoke directly for 28 minutes without anyone aiding him. When it was question and answer time, he displayed the dexterity of his team, which is one of the hallmarks of successful leadership.”

Alake, who disclosed that in due course, Tinubu will engage some media houses, however, maintained that the party’s candidate will not succumb to any form of blackmail.

He said: “Tinubu will be engaging with some journalists with time. But our candidate will not subject himself to any blackmail by a section of the media, which arrogates to itself self-importance.”

Wike attacks Dogara for backing Atiku

    •Ex-Speaker fires back
    •Ex-VP can’t see Buhari’s achievements, says govt

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike yesterday clashed with former House of Representatives Speaker Yakubu over the latter’s backing of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar.

The governor asked Atiku to restrain his men from insulting the group of five governors (G-5), known as the Integrity Group.

But, Dogara fired back, claiming in a tweet that Wike was not saying the truth about their meeting.

“Thank God, there was a witness!” Dogara stated.

The G-5 governors – Wike, Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) – are locked in a protracted feud with the party leadership over the refusal of the National Chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu, to resign, contrary to his promise to quit if the presidential candidate was picked from the North.

They have insisted that Ayu’s resignation is a condition for supporting Atiku in next year’s election.

Yesterday, Makinde said the governors were yet to decide on which presidential candidate to support.

The G-6 governors were also absent at the PDP’s presidential rally in Lagos yesterday.

Wike said the G-5 would fight back if Atiku’s men continued to insult the Integrity Group.

He spoke at the kick-off of Indorama-Agbonchia-Ogale-Ebubu-East/West Link Road in Eleme Local Government Area.

The governor said: “We need peace in this state and we would continue to keep the peace but nobody can take us for a ride. Rivers State cannot be a slave to anybody.

“What I want to tell the presidential candidate of the PDP is we need peace.

“We want all of us to be together for the party to win the general elections, but let me say clearly: if your boys continue to fight the leaders of our party, we would fight back.

“If anybody in the PDP presidential campaign council continues to insult the governors of the integrity group, we would fight back. Enough is enough.

“We want peace and we want equity, fairness and justice. Nobody should take us for granted.

“I cannot understand people who just left APC recently and are talking about PDP that we stayed and suffered to build. Even if anybody should talk about us, it is not these miscreants.”

The governor lambasted Dogara for allegedly backing Atiku against his earlier stance on Southern Presidency in 2023.

Wike said soon, he would reveal details of his discussion with Dogara and former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

He said: “At the appropriate time I will talk about how Dogara and Babachir visited me and what we agreed.

“What I don’t like in life is people that don’t have character. I can’t stand it. At the appropriate time, I will challenge them for a debate.”

He recalled how Dogara had evaded an appointment they were to have and left the PDP to join the APC.

He said: “What I don’t like in life is people that don’t have character. I can’t stand it. At the appropriate time, I would challenge them to a debate. Ask Dogara, what made you leave PDP?

“Dogara was to see me; unknown to me, he gave me an excuse and I was watching Dogara on TV being received by President Muhammadu Buhari that he had gone to APC. I say ‘Okay, no problem’.

“The same Dogara said the Presidency should be zoned to southern Nigeria for there to be peace.

“Now, I hear about the same Dogara (is endorsing Atiku from the north for the presidency). Is that how you do things? Can’t you say something and stand by it?”

    Dogara faults Wike

In a tweet via his handle @YakubDogara, the former Speaker faulted Wike’s claims.

He stated: “To my brother, Governor Nyesom Wike; if there is anything you are suffering from, I never thought amnesia would be one of them.

“Why would you think no one, except you, is entitled to a certain set of principles he/she cannot compromise?

“It’s such a pity if you cannot remember what our discussion and agreement were all about.

“Why should only your own position be respected and followed? I would never betray a friend and a brother that is why I won’t respond to your tirade on live TV.

“The details of our conversation are sealed up with me but if you feel it’s okay to throw it to the public, kindly give me written consent to divulge it so that the public can judge who is saying the truth. Thank God there was a witness!”

    Executive order stands, says Wike

Wike reiterated that Executive Order 21 was still in force in Rivers.

He said the order’s intent was misrepresented before the Inspector-General of Police.

According to him, political parties intending to hold their events within government facilities and schools should apply.

Wike said: “Nobody can stop anybody from rallying. There are people misinterpreting and misconstruing what we are saying.

“What we are saying is that if they want to use primary and secondary schools, apply, pay money for security so that when you destroy or mess up the place, the government can now come and clean up the place.

“We are not saying that you are not entitled to use the place for a rally. These people, I don’t know the type of school they went to, are telling lies. I am sure they misquoted the IG (Inspector General of Police).

“Some of them say they would disobey executive order numbers 21 and 22, I wish them good luck. Dare us and we would tell you we are in charge of Rivers state.”

    Mimiko hails Wike

Former Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko, said Wike was speaking the minds of people desiring justice, fairness and ethnic inclusivity.

He believes the governor’s voice was gaining traction because he had worked assiduously to deliver dividends of democracy to his people.

Mimiko said: “I personally cannot over-emphasise how proud I am of Governor Wike’s accomplishments.

“Today, Wike may be the indisputable poster boy of the campaign for social justice in the politics of this country…

“People who choose not to be the charitable talk of what they imagine is Wike’s stubbornness, Wike’s combative approach to issues, etc.

“For me, I can surely live with Wike’s fabled stubbornness and theatrics in so far as that is steeped in Wike’s impressive, albeit unusual dedication to good governance, quality project execution, and equity in the polity…

“Keep it on, Governor Nyesom Wike, for, you speak the minds of so many Nigerians that desire equity, just so, that our country may remain to fulfil its God-ordained destiny in the comity of nations.”

Makinde: G5 governors yet to decide on who to back

On which presidential candidate the G-5 governors would support, Makinde expressed hope that some form of alignment will be reached before the election.

He spoke with reporters shortly after signing the Bill on Emmanuel Alayande University of Education, Oyo Law 2022.

The event was held at the Executive Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

Makinde said his colleagues in the G5 were still in talks with the party leadership, adding that some demands have also been placed before them.

According to him, it was too early to determine the presidential candidate to support since talks were still ongoing with the party’s national leadership and stakeholders.

Makinde said: “It is not time. We are still talking. We have made some demands on the party. One day is a long time in politics.

“So, we are still talking and we are hopeful that some form of alignment will be reached at the end of the day.”

The governor urged those who have left in pursuit of their political ambition on other political platforms to return.

  • Minister knocks Atiku over Buhari’s performance

Minister knocks Atiku over Buhari’s performance

Information, Culture and Tourism Minister Alhaji Lai Mohammed yesterday joined issues with the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, over the latter’s remarks on President Muhammadu Buhari’s performance.

The PDP candidate at a rally in Ondo State claimed that the Buhari-led administration for claiming that the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has not done anything for Nigeria in eight years.

But the minister said the one-time vice president has lost touch with events in the country having relocated to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE)

According to Mohammed, when Atiku was in office for eight years, there was no motorable road to his hometown, adding that the Mayo Belwa- Jada- Ganye- Toungo Road has been constructed by the Buhari administration.

Besides, the minister said the Buhari government has curtailed Boko Haram insurgency in Adamawa State.

Speaking at the seventh edition of the PMB administration, Mohammed said: “Let me use this opportunity to comment on the increasing tendency by some opposition presidential candidates to downplay the achievements of this administration, in their desperation for power, ahead of the 2023 elections.

“The worst offender in this regard has been the presidential candidate of the PDP, former vice president Atiku Abubakar.

“During his recent campaign in Akure, the former VP was quoted as saying the APC had not done anything for Nigeria in eight years. What a preposterous statement from somebody who should know.

“I guess we can excuse His Excellency the former Vice President who, until recently, had fully relocated to Dubai, thus losing touch with Nigeria.

“And if anyone would accuse the APC-led Federal Government of doing nothing, it should not be Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Why? Because for the 16 years of the PDP rule, eight of which Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was Vice President, there was no motorable road to the former VP’s hometown and indeed to key local governments in the Southern Senatorial zone that served as Adamawa’s food basket and economic nerve centre until the Government of President Muhammadu Buhari assumed office.

“Today, the Mayo Belwa- Jada- Ganye- Toungo road has been constructed fully and it’s the road that Alhaji Atiku uses to get to his hometown of Jada.”

He added: “What about security? Before this administration came into office, all the five local government areas in Adamawa’s Northern Senatorial District were effectively under the control of the Boko Haram terrorists.

“All state institutions, the local government administration, the police, the judiciary, schools, hospitals and markets had been sacked. Traditional rulers, including emirs and chiefs, had been displaced with their palaces taken over by the terrorists as their headquarters.

“The affected five local governments in the Northern Senatorial zone are: Madagali; Michika; Mubi North; Mubi South and Little Gombi

“In the Central Senatorial zone, two local governments were effectively under the control of the Boko Haram terrorists: These two local governments in the Central Senatorial zone are: Maiha Local Government Area and Hong Local government Area

“Today, not an inch of these local governments in Adamawa, the home state of the former vice president, is under the control of terrorists. All institutions of state have relocated back and are operational. All emirs and chiefs have returned to their palaces. Schools and markets have opened.

“Please note that throughout that period, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar could not even go home. As a matter of fact, when one of his right hand men, Mr. Adila, was killed by the terrorists, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar could not even go to condole with the family of the deceased. It was that bad.

“Now that he can travel home freely, thanks to the Buhari administration, it is not sweet in his mouth to accuse the same administration of doing nothing. As they say, the bed wetter should not join those who are insulting the washer man.”

The minister reeled out the achievements of the Buhari administration.

He said:  ”In the area of Social Investment Programmes (SIPs), there have been 29,641 beneficiaries, from Adamawa alone, of the N-POWER Programme of the Buhari administration. Under the Home Grown School Feeding Programme, some 162,782 pupils from Adamawa are benefitting from one meal a day.”

“That programme employs 2,259 cooks in Adamawa and has covered 1,236 schools in the state. How many school children did the PDP feed in Adamawa or anywhere in the eight years that Alhaji Atiku Abubakar held sway as vice president in Abuja!

“We are not done… under the Conditional Cash Transfer, some 64,607 vulnerable people have benefitted in Adamawa alone, while Trader Moni and Market Moni have reached a total of 38,000 people in the state.

“In the area of infrastructure, some 8 roads projects totalling 714 kilometres are currently being rehabilitated or constructed in the state. That’s out of 43 road projects in the Northeast alone. These are not phantom projects.

The minister said the government was ready to come clean on its claims for verification.

He added: “We have the full list of the roads and can make it available to anyone who so wishes. Similarly, the North East Development Commission (NEDC) has either completed or is currently working on 140 projects, including construction of classrooms, healthcare facilities and ICT training centres, in Adamawa alone.

“Overall, NEDC has a total of 593 projects in the entire North East. Again, we have a full list of the projects.”

He said no amount of fallacious soap box rhetorics can erase performance records of the Buhari government.

Mohammed said: “You can now see that we didn’t even need to go far to disprove the former VP’s soap box statement.

“You can also see the irony of someone who held the number two position in the country for all of eight years but could not positively impact on his own hometown, state or region now condemning an administration that has made it possible for him to even access his hometown -anytime he flies in from his new hometown of Dubai!

“The Administration of President Muhammadu Buhari has had a positive impact on all parts of this federation. No amount of fallacious soap box rhetorics can change this fact.”

•Anxiety in Osun over payment of salary to Oyetola’s appointees, 1,500 teachers

As Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke began payment of salary to civil servants for November 2022, 1,500 school teachers and political appointees of his predecessor, Adegboyega Oyetola, have expressed concern about the payment of their emoluments.

The governor had ordered submission of salary schedule to relevant office within 24 hours, directing desk officers to ensure submission by outstanding agencies, while taking briefing from the Ministry of Finance.

Adeleke yesterday announced that the payment of salaries was ongoing, starting with the Ministry of Justice.

A statement by the governor’s spokesman, Olawale Rasheed, said Adeleke had ordered expedited payment of salaries.

He said: “Any ministry, department or agency that fails to submit its salary schedule latest today will be sanctioned. Any agency head who obstructs the process of scheduling will face disciplinary procedures.

“This warning is sequel to report that some agencies are still holding unto their agency’s schedules despite the directive of the governor.

“Currently, payment of salary is ongoing, starting with the Ministry of Justice.”

One thousand five hundred teachers are optimistic to receive their salary for November because of the Executive Order issued by Adeleke, stating that he nullified the employment made by Oyetola after July 16.

He was inaugurated as the governor on November 27.

Political appointees of former governor Oyetola have raised concern over Adeleke’s plot not to pay their November salary.

Read AlsoAdeleke visits Osun Assembly, begs for support

The appointees, led by former Senior Special Assistant to Oyetola, Kehinde Ayantunji, said: “Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Governor Adeleke are not here for governance. Rather, they are here for vendetta.

“It is absurd and devoid of any logic to deny those who work legitimately for their salary. If that is the case, it means the people of the state have enthroned a military government in civilian regalia.

“What we have been experiencing in Osun in the last one week can be best described as re-invention of repressive government, where properties of suspected opposition party members are being demolished, where APC campaign facilities are being damaged openly, where public institution such as Osun State Broadcasting Corporation (OSBC) that has been enjoying deserved autonomy, suddenly becomes a blackmail tool. This better explains the character of the people in government now and the difference between the former governor and them. I say it without any form of contradiction that former governor Oyetola represents civility in governance and the current administration is toeing the lane of brigandage.”

He added: “For your information, Oyetola never approved severance allowance for political appointees and it will be wickedness if you refuse to pay legitimate salary to those who worked from November 1 till November 27. It is their right to get salary, but if they don’t pay, it means Governor Adeleke is on political persecution mission in Osun State and re-inventing anarchy in the state.

“If this happens, definitely we are going to ask questions. I worked for it. It is my entitlement. If satisfactory answers are not provided, we can approach a court of law to seek redress.”

The service was suspended on 28 March after an attack on the rail tracks by bandits.

The Management of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), over the weekend, announced that the train service would resume on Monday.

The Nation boarded the train from Idu to Kubwa stations in Abuja to monitor the resumption of the service.

At the car park in Idu, a few cars were seen at the park about 30 minutes before the take-off of the first train, indicating a low turn out of passengers.

Two traders were sighted at the entrance selling face masks.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) were also seen at the entrance of the station indicating the presence of security.

At the ticketing points, there were about five points of sale. The National Identification Number (NIN) and phone number were demanded from interested passengers before the issuance of tickets.

Passengers without NIN were not issued tickets despite pleas.

In confirmation of the hike in ticket fare, the Abuja-Kaduna train service from Idu to Rigasa has been pegged at N9,000 for 24-seater coaches, N6,500 for 56 and 68-seater coaches and N3,600 for 88-seater coaches while minors are expected to pay N3,000.

  • Atiku’s woes multiply as Wike’s men tighten grip on Rivers

Atiku’s woes multiply as Wike’s men tighten grip on Rivers

The chances of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar securing votes in Rivers State are growing slimmer.

It was gathered that Atiku is distraught by the fact that party leaders who pitched tent with him against Governor Nyesom Wike, are not pulling their weight as expected.

These include former governor Celestine Omehia, as well as other leaders like Austine Opara, Lee Maeba, and Farah Dagogo.

It was learnt that Wike had grown stronger by developing unique strategies to tighten his grip on the party and take all state structures beyond the reach of Atiku and his men.

His continuous campaign for inclusiveness in the national leadership structure of the party and his portrayal of Atiku; the National Chairman of the party, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu; Atiku’s running mate, Ifeanyi Okowa and other Atiku’s men as betrayers, liars, haters of Rivers and divisive leaders, had been received by many Rivers residents across the political divide.

It was gathered that no campaign for Atiku was ongoing in any part of the state as an attempt to mention the name of the PDP presidential candidate was viewed by many people as an abomination.

It was gathered that Atiku’s pictures had disappeared from all campaign materials of the PDP in the state and anybody found with material projecting Atiku is considered an enemy of Rivers.

Rivers youths across the state including the rural areas daily combed their areas to identify and remove campaign materials in their domains belonging to Atiku and Okowa.

It was found that in the entire state it was unlikely to see any Atiku billboard, posters or other campaign materials unlike in 2019 when Wike supported the Adamawa-born politician.

The recent appointments of 200,000 advisers on polling units and over 300 local government liaison officers by the governor were said to have made any plan by Atiku and his men to penetrate Rivers a herculean task.

Besides, it was observed that all local government chairpersons, ward and unit heads of the PDP had remained loyal to the governor and were backing his political decisions ahead of 2023.

Besides, the perception of the governor as a performer and his use of project inauguration to extract a commitment from folks had made many Rivers communities a no-go area for Atiku’s men.

While campaigns for the governorship candidate of the PDP, Sim Fubara, National and House of Assembly candidates of the party were ongoing with their campaign materials dotting all corners of the state, nothing was being said about Atiku.

All pro-Atiku leaders in Rivers had fled the state and were said to be hiding in Abuja and following Atiku without any plan to return home to campaign for their presidential candidate.

Wike had continued to tell the people to vote for his candidates for other positions but to wait for his decision on the presidential poll.

The governor on Saturday night excluded Atiku, Okowa, Ayu and all Atiku’s men from the list of 162 distinguished Nigerians he conferred with state awards for their inspirational achievements, impactful life and contributions to the progress of the Rivers in particular.

Among those honoured were eight governors, nine former governors of other states, lawyers and others, whom he said demonstrated a high level of loyalty to the nation, excellence in public service, commitment to equity, equality and justice in the country and love for the government and the people of Rivers.

Wike presented the awards during the State Honours and Awards ceremony 2022 which was held at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Port Harcourt.

The awards were in four categories of the Grand Service State of Rivers State (GSSRS), the Distinguished Service State of Rivers State (DSSRS), the Governor’s Medal of Service (GMS) and the Rivers State Merit Award (RSMA).

Wike explained that the state honours and awards were solely the initiatives of Dr. Odili.

He said everyone bestowed with an award on Saturday night had distinguished themselves by their good character, personal achievements and positive contributions to society.

Benue State governor, Samuel Ortom, who spoke on behalf of his colleagues, said Wike had demonstrated that he is a true patriot and nationalist by honouring Nigerians from the six geopolitical zones, irrespective of their religious and political persuasion.

He said: “Today, in Nigeria as we match towards 2023, we are not looking at political parties, we are not looking at ethnicity, but we are looking at how we can salvage our country Nigeria, and make it greater than where we are today.

“I thank you (Wike) for charting this course and I believe that moving forward from here, all of us who are here tonight will be a catalyst to how we can make Nigeria greater, economically, politically, socially, security-wise, we will make it greater.”

Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), who spoke on behalf of the awardees, said governor Wike had taken governance to the next level.

He said: “You have indeed demonstrated what it takes to be accommodating, what it takes to be a bridge builder, a builder of bridges across the Niger.

“You have established a bridge. We are happy crossing over to come around to identify with you in the expression of excellence attributed to the service of the nation.”
