BREAKING: Court sentences IGP to three months in prison

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced the Inspector-General of Police Usman Alkali Baba to three months in prison for disobeying a valid court order.

The court, in a ruling by Justice M. O. Olajuwon on Tuesday, held that the IGP should be committed to prison and detained in custody for a period of three months or until he obeys an order it made on October 21, 2011.

The IGP’s committal followed a suit by a police officer, Mr. Patrick Okoli, who claimed he was unlawfully and compulsorily retired from the Nigerian Police Force.

“If at the end of the three months, the contemnor remains recalcitrant and still refuses to purge his contempt, he shall be committed for another period and until he purges his contempt,” the court held.

Justice Olajuwon noted that though the Police Service Commission (PSC) recommended Okoli’s reinstatement into the Force, a decision that was affirmed by the court, the IGP refused to comply with the order.

The court had also ordered the payment of N10m to the applicant, being special and general damages for the unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional denial of his rights and privileges as a Senior Officer of the Nigeria Police Force from 1993 till date.

NANS apologises to Aisha Buhari over Aminu Mohammed’s arrest

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has apologised to Aisha, wife of President Muhammadu Buhari over the arrest of a student of the Federal University, Dutse Jigawa, Aminu Mohammed by Police operatives.

Many Nigerians condemned the alleged arrest of Mohammed over a tweet on the First Lady.

NANS claimed contrary to previous reports that Mohammed was arrested by the Department of State Services, he was arrested by the Federal Capital Territory Police Command, who traced Mohammed to Jigawa where he was picked up.

NANS in a statement on Tuesday by its President, Usman Barambu, apologised on behalf of the Nigerian students to the First Lady, while also calling for Mohammed’s release.

“The leadership of NANS received with concern the news of the unlawful arrest of Mohammed by the Nigeria Police on the instruction of Aisha Buhari. Upon receiving the news, I, Mohammed’s family and friends swung into action to trace the whereabouts of Mohammed. After some days of searching, we got the information that he was at the police unit in Wuse Zone 2. I met with Mohammed at the police custody.

“It was alleged that Mohammed some weeks back posted Aisha Buhari’s picture on Twitter with the caption “Su mama anchi kudin talakawa an koshi” (translated from Hausa to ‘the mother has gotten fatter by eating masses’ money’).

“Just like the normal way angry citizens have different ways of expression on the social media. On November 18, 2022, the police from Abuja tracked Mohammed to the Federal University Dutse and picked him without any written/verbal invitation or informing the school management or his family,” Barambu narrated.

The NANS President alleged Mohammed was taken straight to the Presidential Villa where he was allegedly brutalised, beaten, maltreated and humiliated by the police “on the orders of Aisha Buhari, after which he was unlawfully detained at a police facility at Wuse Zone II till date. I, alongside our team of lawyers, met with Mohammed at the police facility where he confirmed the incident to me. Until now, Mohammed has not been arraigned by any competent court of law or granted bail by the police.”

“We want to, on behalf of all the Nigerian students, tender our unreserved apology to the First Lady Aisha Buhari, for the action of Mohammed which might have caused her and her family pains. However, as leaders and public office holders, we must overlook some criticisms if we want to really forge ahead and do the right thing.

“We demand a detailed explanation by the Nigeria Police on why they will go to the school premises and ‘kidnap’ a student without due process and took him straight to the Presidential Villa where he was brutalised which violates his fundamental human rights,” the statement said.

NANS said Mohammed had sustained various injuries and had not accessed any proper medical attention. “We call on the police as a matter of national interest and urgency to release Mohammed unconditionally or be prepared to face the Nigerian students.

“However, we are calling on our teeming students to be careful and apply decorum in dealing with people especially our leaders. They should be mindful of what they post on social media.

“We want to inform the general public to be patient as we await response and actions from the Inspector General of Police on a letter earlier sent to his office,” the President added.

“Even as media owe the powerful institutions to account, you must also reserve some of this scrutiny for yourselves and ensure that there is no room for bad eggs and those who seek to bring this noble reputation into disrepute.

“Your standards must never be lower for anything and not in this age of which social media and the internet have enabled the amplification of fake news and malicious content that are intended to give undue political advantage.”

Adeleke hits Osun State with gale of sack, reversals

    • Workers, three monarchs, OSIEC chair, others fired

    • 30 perm secs demoted

    • Lawmakers draw battle line with governor over state name, anthem, logo, others

A gale of dismissals swept through Osun State yesterday.

Governor Ademola Adeleke wielded the big stick, barely 24 hours after taking office.

The civil service and traditional institutions were the worst hit.

The governor fired 12,000 workers hired by immediate past Governor Adegboyega Oyetola.

But, a source said only 2,000 workers were employed by the former governor.

Also sacked were three traditional rulers appointed by the past administration.

Thirty senior civil servants enlisted to the position of Permanent Secretary were demoted to directors.

The chairman and some members of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) were fired.

It was the second day of policy reversals by the new governor who assumed office at the State secretariat, Abere, Osogbo.

There was uproar in the state yesterday following the sackings.

Three monarchs – the Akirun of Ikirun, Oba Yinusa Akadiri; Aree of Ire, Oba Ademola Oluponle and Owa of Igbajo, Oba Gboyega Famodu – were ordered to vacate their palaces for security agents to take over.

The governor demoted 30 permanent secretaries recently promoted by his predecessor, Oyetola.

Besides, Adeleke fired the chairman of OSIEC, Mr. Segun Oladitan, and other members of the agency.

Frowning at the reversal of his predecessor’s decisions, the House of Assembly drew a battle line with the governor over the change of the state name, anthem and slogan.

A statement by Adeleke’s Chief Press Secretary, Olawale Rasheed, stated that the governor signed executive orders, which covered chieftaincy matters, appointments, setting up of review panel, staff audit and employment matters.

It reads: “All employments in the service of Osun State Government made in any capacity into any capacity in all the ministries, departments, agencies, commissions, boards and parastatals after July 17, 2022, be and are hereby nullified.

“Executive Order Number Five on Chieftaincy Affairs and appointment of traditional rulers: all appointments of traditional rulers made by Osun State Government after 17th July 2022, are hereby ordered to be reviewed to ensure there was strict compliance with due process of chieftaincy declarations and native law, custom and tradition relating to such chieftaincies.

“In the case of Ikirun, Iree and Igbajo, to avoid further breakdown of law and order, the appointments of Akinrun of Ikinrun, Aree of Ire and Owa of Igbajo are hereby put on hold, pending review.

“Subsequently, the palaces of Akinrun of Ikirun, Aree of Iree and Owa of Igbajo should remain unoccupied, while security agencies are hereby ordered to take charge.”

Also, a statement by the Secretary to Osun State Government, Tesleem Igbalaye, announced the suspension of the Chairman of OSIEC, Oladitan and its members.

They are: Yusuf Oyeniran, Suibat Adubi, Prince Yinka Ajiboye, Abosede Omibeku, Dosu Gidigbi, and Wahab Adewoyin.

He said the suspension followed many petitions bordering on financial impropriety, dereliction of duty, absenteeism and abuse of office against the chairman and members of the commission.

Igbalaye said: “Pending the outcome of an investigation into the allegations against the suspended Chairman and members of the Commission, the Secretary to the Commission shall hold forth in running the affairs of the Commission.”

    Hoodlums attack motor parks

Tension seized Osogbo, the state capital, as hoodlums armed with guns and other dangerous weapons attacked motor parks to take over the secretariats.

The hoodlums, who claimed to be supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), launched attacks on four motor parks: Oke-Baale, Old Garage, Ilesa Garage and Aregbe Garage simultaneously.

They claimed that the union leaders were loyal to the All Progressives Congress (APC), adding that they must give way to loyalists of the new government.

Ten members and executives of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) and two policemen sustained injuries.

At the Old Garage, hoodlums chased union members from the park towards the Ayetoro area with guns and cutlasses. Business owners had to close their shops. School gates were shut. A car was razed.

Adeleke, in a statement by Olawale, directed union leaders to maintain peace across parks, warning against violence among transport workers’ unions in the state. The governor also directed security agencies to maintain the status quo across the motor parks.

He said: “All union leaders and their supporters are hereby directed to remain calm and bring any grievances to the State Government for resolution.

“Security agencies are consequently directly to maintain law and order.”

    Police arrest 10

No fewer than 10 hoodlums were later arrested by the police.

The spokesperson of Osun Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, in a statement, confirmed that members of NURTW and policemen were injured during an attack by hoodlums.

She said: “The police operatives’ tactical operation led to the arrest of 10 suspects and recovery of one Barretta pistol, two pump action, two barrel guns, nine live and four expended cartridges, five cutlasses and charms.”

Oyetola: publish list of 12,000 workers

Yesterday, Oyetola’s spokesperson, Ismail Omipidan, said the claim by Adeleke that his boss employed 12,000 workers was not only false but unfounded.

Omipidan, who challenged Adeleke to publish the list of the purported 12,000 workers, queried: “What is the entire workforce of the state?”

He added: “Once a lie is told, you need a one and thousand lies to cover it up. In no distant future, the people of Osun will know who the real liars are.”

    Osun Assembly draws battleline

Crisis loom in the House as the lawmakers warned the new governor against the reversal of the slogan and name of the state, non-compliance with the rendition of the state anthem, and rejection of the state logo.

Adeleke, in his inaugural speech, had issued an Executive Order reversing the name of the state from ‘State of Osun’ to Osun State, and the slogan of ‘State of Virtue’ to ‘State of Living Spring’.

The new governor also shunned the usage of the state logo, thereby adopting the Nigerian coat of arm logo.

At the swearing-in of aides at Imole House, the state anthem was not rendered.

Similarly, the podium of the governor carried an emblem devoid of the state logo.

The House of Assembly cautioned Adeleke, stressing that the usage of the state anthem, crest and flag is backed by laws and not a matter of choice.

A statement by the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity, Moshood Akande, said: “The State of Osun House of Assembly, having reviewed the inaugural speech of the governor and the activities of the inauguration hereby resolves as follows: The enactment ‘State of Osun Anthem, Crest and Flag Law, 2012’ assented to on the 18th of December, 2012 contained in Schedule I, Il, Ill, IV and V, which carefully details every component of this law is not in ambiguity.

“Schedule I is the State Anthem, Schedule II has to do with the State Crest, Schedule III is the symbolic significance of the elements in the Flag.

“Lastly, “Lastly, while we are aware of a court judgment in effect recognizing ‘Osun State’, the Assembly, pending the determination and exhaustion of all legal means, would not be drawn into this matter.

“However, the State shall and will continue to be described as the State of the Virtuous (Ipinle Omoluabi).”

    Excited residents welcome governor

Civil servants, PDP members and residents yesterday welcomed the governor with excitement.

The elated crowd converged in front of Abere around 8am with flags, banners, drums, trumpets and whistles, waiting to receive him.

Adeleke arrived at the gate of the State Secretariat at 12:22 pm, amid heavy security.

He acknowledged the cheers by sticking out his head through the open roof of his vehicle as the convoy moved into Bola Ige House.

The governor was hosted to an inter-faith service at the State Secretariat, with civil servants singing and dancing.

Adeleke promised to guarantee the welfare of the public service.

He urged new political appointees to brace up for good governance as clerics committed the governor and the state to God’s hand.

Speaking at the swearing-in of the Chief of Staff, Alhaji Kazeem Akinleye, and the Secretary to the State Government, Teslim Igbalaye, Adeleke described the new appointees as “worthy sons of Osun State” and strong members of the ‘Imole team’ who have the interest of the state at heart.

At an event attended by top political and religious leaders as well as traditional rulers, including the Deputy Governor, Prince Kola Adewusi, and Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun, the governor said his appointees will strengthen the capacity and capabilities of his administration to deliver on his five-point agenda.

Responding on behalf of other appointees, Igbalaye assured the governor of their readiness to support him in his desire to take the state to the promised land, adding: “We are committed to the faithful and successful implementation of the five-point agenda.”

    Okowa congratulates Adeleke

PDP vice-presidential candidate Ifeanyi Okowa congratulated Adeleke on his inauguration.

Okowa, in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, in Asaba, described Adeleke’s emergence as “the entrance of light for Osun people.”

He said: “It is heart-warming to witness your inauguration as the sixth governor of Osun against all odds and I am grateful to the electorate in Osun for shunning the entreaties of retrogressive forces.

“It is my prayer that God will grant you wisdom, knowledge and the needed resources to attend to your campaign promises of taking away the darkness that pervades your state, Osun.”

Aregbesola’s loyalist under fire for attending inauguration

Supporters of former Governor Rauf Aregbesola under the aegis of The Osun Progressives (TOP) have been criticised for attending the inauguration.

The factional chairman of APC, Rasak Salinsile, attended the inauguration held at the Osogbo Township stadium.

The pictures of their attendance went viral on Monday.

A group of youths within APC headed by Aweda Abimbade said: “The attendance of Aregbesola’s loyalists at Adeleke’s inauguration has vindicated the leadership of APC in the state that they (TOP) clandestinely worked against the victory of the party in the last governorship election in the State.

“The immediate past state chairman of the APC, Prince Gboyega Famodun, now Owa of Igbajo, had described TOP members and their sponsors as parasites who were hell-bent to pull down the party for selfish interest.”

  • Supreme Court overwhelmed by 6,884 cases, CJN Ariwoola laments

Supreme Court overwhelmed by 6,884 cases, CJN Ariwoola laments

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Olukayode Ariwoola, yesterday said the Supreme Court was overwhelmed by cases, some of which are flimsy.

To him, some of the cases should not be in court, let alone on appeal.

Justice Ariwoola noted that the Supreme Court ranks as the busiest in the world due to Nigerians’ preference for litigation as against exploring other dispute resolution mechanisms.

He urged the National Assembly to speed up the process of amending the Constitution to reduce the number of cases that go to the Supreme Court.

The CJN spoke in Abuja at a special session of the Supreme Court to mark the commencement of the 2022/2023 legal year and the swearing-in of 63 newly conferred Senior Advocates of Nigeria.

He said: “The Nigerian public needs to be reminded of the need to do less litigation and embrace more of alternative dispute resolution to free the courts of this unnecessary over-stretching of human and material resources.

“As rightly observed, Nigerians are the most litigious people on earth; especially the political class.

“We don’t need to rush to court after every little disagreement. We have various alternative dispute resolution mechanisms across the country that we can conveniently leverage, with a view to freeing the courts of this incessant case overload.

“In every little disagreement, we rush to court; and in every lost case, we rush to appeal even up to the Supreme Court, no matter how little the issue might be.

“That has obviously accounted for the several appeals pending in Supreme Court.

“Though we receive scathing criticisms from members of the public over our over-blotted docket, we are neither in any position to regulate case inflow to the court nor have the supernatural powers to attend to all in one fell swoop.”

Justice Ariwoola, who gave statistical details about the Supreme Court’s performance in the last legal year, said 6,884 appeals were currently pending.

“Our pending (backlog) civil appeals are 4,741 while the number of pending criminal appeals is 1,392.

Read Also; I’m delighted Makinde is among G5 Govs – CJN Ariwoola

“On the other hand, we have 751 moribund appeals for disposal which brings the total number of pending appeals in this honourable court to 6884.

“Out of the 4,741 civil appeals in the court’s docket, 1,495 have briefs filed and exchanged and are ready for hearing; whereas, the remaining 3,246 appeals are having about 10,000 motions, with some contentious and others innocuous in nature.

“As for the pending 1,392 criminal appeals, 461 already had briefs filed and exchanged and are ready for hearing.

“The remaining 931 appeals have about 2,000 different motions for hearing to determine their eligibility for hearing.

“However, the identified 751 moribund appeals are to be disposed of for non-compliance with the Supreme Court Rules, i.e. Order 8 Rule 8.

“Also, within the window offered by the 2021/2022 legal year, the Supreme Court entertained a total number of 1,764 cases, comprising of motions and appeals.

“Out of these, we heard 816 Civil, 370 criminal and 16 political matters, making a total of 1,202 motions.

“Similarly, the court considered a total number of 562 appeals, comprising of 341 civil, 186 criminal, and 35 political. A total number of 154 Judgments were delivered in the year,” the CJN said.

Justice Ariwoola believes the country was witnessing perilous times and requires all hands be on deck to salvage the situation.

He said: “The times we are in, are quite perilous! All hands must be on deck to make the best out of the unpleasant situation.

“The rate of high-calibre crimes in the land is increasing by the day. Never in the history of Nigeria have we experienced such before.

“Security of lives and property can no longer be guaranteed; and as this is happening, so are cases streaming freely into the courts for adjudication.

“That has made the task before us more doubting. No one can afford to sit on the fence at this critical point we have found ourselves,” he said.

Justice Ariwoola, who noted that the Judiciary experienced some challenging moments during the last legal year, said it also recorded major successes.

He pledged that the third arm of government would do more this year to deliver on its constitutional mandate of justice delivery.

He added: “The prosperity of the Nigerian judiciary is the responsibility of all of us.

“We must not shy away from the challenges Staring us in the face because if the judiciary fails, there will certainly be no country to call Nigeria.

“Those wishing us bad and even engaging in different forms of unwholesome conduct to sink the ship, will certainly not be comfortable with the likely result that would emerge from such unpatriotic effort.

“Nigeria is a project in our hands that must be collectively nurtured to prosperity and Eldorado.

“We cannot run away from those vices that confront us as a nation, rather, we have to fasten our belts and face them head-on,” the CJN said.

He commended the Corruption and Financial Crimes Cases Trial Monitoring Committee (COTRIMCO) for its performance in the last legal year, noting that it facilitated the prompt determination of many cases.

“Between October 2021 and September 2022, a total number of 3,563 convictions were made through the collaborative effort of the committee.

“There was an equally large number of forfeited cash and non-cash recoveries made within the period,” the CJN said.

Fed Govt issues security advice to Nigerians travelling to UK, U.S., Europe

By Yusuf Alli and Onyedi Ojiabor, Abuja

Nigerians travelling to the United States (U.S.), United Kingdom (UK) and Europe have been advised to take extra precaution to avoid being dispossessed of their belongings.

Information Culture and Tourism Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed gave the advice yesterday in Abuja at the opening of the fifth edition of the ‘President Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) Administration Scorecard 2015-2023 Series’.

He said the Fed Government was worried at the rate Nigerians have being losing cash, international passports and belongings in the two countries.

The minister said: “Permit me to quickly make an announcement. It has come to the attention of the government that Nigerian travellers to the United States and some countries in Europe are having their belongings, especially money and international passports, stolen at an increasingly high rate.

“The most recent victims of this are travelers to the UK, most of whom were dispossessed of their belongings at highbrow shops, particularly in the high street of Oxford.

“We have therefore decided to advise Nigerians travelling to Europe and the United States to take extra precaution to avoid being dispossessed of their belongings.

“This is not your typical travel advisory. Issuing such is the prerogative of our embassies/high commissions as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“It is merely a piece of advice to Nigerians who may be visiting the affected parts of the world.”

But none of the embassies was willing last night to respond to the minister’s claims.

A top diplomat said: “It is an attention-seeking statement because his assumptions were contradictory and baseless.

“He didn’t present statistics of victims or any shred of evidence to buttress his phantom claims.

“The good thing is that he didn’t talk of security breaches or threats. He decided to embark on a wild goose chase.”

Another source from one of the European countries simply said: “No comment at all.”

A third source added: “Only the minister can explain his motive. No facts and figures.”

    • APC urges northerners to disregard elders playing ethnic politics

The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Abdullahi Adamu, and the immediate past governor of Nasarawa State, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, have urged residents of the state to vote massively for the party’s presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and Governor Abdullahi Sule.

The duo spoke yesterday in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State when Governor Sule kick-started his re-election campaign ahead of the 2023 general election.

Adamu said the people of Toto had always voted for APC, adding that 2023 would not be different.

He said the party presented a man of excellence with records of performance as its presidential candidate, stressing that Nigerians have decided to vote him as their next president and Nasarawa people should not be left out.

Al-Makura said re-electing Governor Sule would sustain the good work he has started, which has touched all the sectors of the state’s economy.

Governor Sule urged the people of Toto to vote for him, promising to do more projects for them.

The traditional ruler of the area, the Ohimege Opanda Alhaji Usman Abdullahi, who turbaned the governor as Sarki Yaki Opanda, hailed him for restoring security to the state.

Also, the Presidential Campaign Council of the APC in the Northwest has urged northerners to shun elders playing ethnic politics against Asiwaju Tinubu.

The campaign council said the elders were hiding behind a bogus Northern agenda to promote their individuals and self-serving interests.

In a statement by its Northwest Spokesman Muhammad Shehu Molash while reacting to a viral audio recording of a Northern Elder advising northern voters not to vote for Southern candidates, Molash said Asiwaju Tinubu is one of the ardent believers in the unity of Nigeria.

The spokesman said this has reflected in his constant support for presidential candidates from the North, beginning with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in 2007, Nuhu Ribadu in 2011 and incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

“Our attention has been drawn to a widely circulated voice note of a supposedly Northern elder, Alhaji Sani Zangon Daura, calling on Northerners to reject Presidential candidates of Southern Nigeria’s extraction.

“The Northwest APC Presidential Campaign Council is, therefore, calling on Northerners to disregard the antics of these elders who hide behind a bogus Northern agenda to promote their individual and self-serving interests.

“An overview of the life and history of these elders reveals that they benefited proportionally from the resources and unity of Nigeria; as such, they should please allow other Nigerians to unite themselves by voting in trusted, competent and reliable leaders, regardless of their state of origin in the 2023 general elections God’s willing,” he said.

He said: “It has come to the attention of the government that Nigerian travellers to the United States and some countries in Europe are having their belongings, especially money and international passports, stolen at an increasingly high rate.

“The most recent victims of this are travelers to the UK, most of whom were dispossessed of their belongings at high brow shops, particularly in the high street of Oxford.

“We have therefore decided to advise Nigerians travelling to Europe and the United States to take extra precautions to
avoid being dispossessed of their belongings.

“This is not your typical travel advisory. Issuing such is the prerogative of our embassies/high commissions as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“It is merely a piece of advice to Nigerians who may be visiting the affected parts of the world.”
