Buhari’s daughter, Hanan decries low rape reporting

The daughter of President Muhammadu Buhari, Hanan has decried the low reporting rate of rape cases in the country.

Hanan reiterated the need to address the issue of rape while stressing the need to break the “culture of silence.”

She noted that there had been an increase in rape cases in the country from 63 per cent in 2015 to 72.1 per cent in 2016.

She spoke during the launch of the Hanan Buhari Foundation at the Presidential Banquet Hall, Abuja.

While giving her address, she said: “According to a 2018 statistical report on women and men in Nigeria using data obtained from the police force and Ministry of Justice, it was revealed that the rape incidences from women and girls is on the rise. With an increasing trend of 63% in 2015 to 72.1% in 2016.

“Despite increase in activism, cases of rape go largely unreported. According to data from the Nigerian National anti trafficking agency, only 32% of cases were reported between 2019 and 2022.

“Undoubtedly we need to rise and break this culture of silence. Especially now that more women are beginning to have the courage to speak out about their victimization.”

Speaking on her newly launched foundation, She said: “I can say the foundation would work with other prestigious bodies for this cause. We will focus tackling violence, assault and rape.”

Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Paullen Tallen said 34 states have domesticated the child rights Act.

She said: “Before I came into office, we had only 12 states that had domesticated the child rights act, but with aggressive campaigns, I am proud to say today the number has increased to 34. We have only two states left.

“I call on all men of goodwill to start with this administration, as we fight gender based violence. I commend the Hanan Buhari foundation and your team for the great work in putting this together and for calling on all well meaning Nigeria to join the fight against this dreaded monster that is affecting our children.”

PRESIDENTIAL candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, continued his push for votes in the Niger Delta region yesterday with a visit to Oporoza, the headquarters of Gbaramotu Kingdom, Delta State.

Yesterday’s visit, during which the presidential candidate met with leaders and stakeholders in the kingdom located in Warri Southwest Development Area, came less than one week after he visited the state for a campaign rally in Warri town.

Among his hosts was ex-warlord and former leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND), Chief Government Ekpemupolo a.k.a. Tompolo.

Receiving Asíwájú Tinubu in his palace, the Pere of Gbaramotu showered praises on the APC candidate and prayed for his success in the presidential election.

The traditional ruler urged Tinubu to ensure the establishment of a deep sea port in Gbaramotu, industrial park in Ogidigben and good roads and bridges leading into the kingdom, if he emerges victorious in the 2023 presidential election.

In his response, Asíwájú Tinubu promised to work to speed up the development of the region, saying he would engage in regular consultations with the leaders to emplace initiatives and projects that would help the region.

“I’m one of you. My wife is a daughter of the Niger Delta. Your in-law is also your son. No be so?’ the APC presidential candidate asked in Pidgin English to which the mammoth crowd yelled, “Na so!”

He added that what the people needed was a honest leader.

Tinubu said: “You need honesty. You need the man who knows the road. That man is me!

“As promised, we will not be far away from you. We will carry you along. We will consult with you regularly.

“Our brothers here, we will embrace them for the development of the area, the community of Gbaramatu and other associated communities.

“I promise you economic development, progress, jobs for our youths, a promised tomorrow that is certain, and a renewed hope.

“Please, pay attention to the danger of destruction of pipelines, petroleum facilities. People are leaking gas. They are dangerous for our health, for the fishes you eat, everything you do.

“Let us see that improvement, that commitment and you will see what we will do with the savings.

“We will encourage you. We will keep our promises. We will be with you and carry you along.

“You mentioned the deep sea port, the roads, the bridge, the university, the industrial park at Ogidigben. These are the things that came to your mind.”

Tinubu also took a swipe at the presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and that of Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi.

He said: “As I stand before you, there are few of us left running.

“One says he is Atiku. How many times has he been running? He is always on the run and this time, tell him to go and sit down. Enough is enough!

“The other one, he thinks na statistics we go chop. His line of arithmetic, no Indian can solve it. To mention his name is a disgrace to me. Wrong arithmetics, wrong statistics, that’s not what Nigeria needs.”

“The man standing before you will implement whatever he promised. You need honesty, you need commitment to perform. I embody both.

“I know the road and I will carry the Niger Delta people along. We will consult your leaders for the development of Gbaramotu Kingdom and other associated communities.”

He said he was aware that the Warri-Escravos/Gbaramotu Road had been awarded, pledging to ensure the completion of the road by getting the contractor involved to deliver on the project.

He also said if that elected, the Ministry of Niger Delta and the Niger Delta Development Commission will serve the full purpose for which they were established.

Tinubu was accompanied to the kingdom by the Deputy Senate President and APC governorship candidate in Delta State, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege; Governors Abdullahi Ganduje and Mai Mala Buni of Kano and Yobe states; Minister of State, Petroleum Resources Timiprey Sylva; Minister of State, Labour Festus Keyamo; and former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Dimeji Bankole.

Others on the entourage included former Governor-elect of Bayelsa State, David Lyon; former Minister of State, Niger Delta, Elder Orubebe; APC Chairman in Delta State, Elder Sobotie and a party chieftain in the state, Ayiri Emami.

The high point of the meeting was the conferment on the APC presidential candidate of the Iyelawei of Gbaramotu title, meaning the torch bearer of the kingdom. It was his second traditional title in two days.

On arrival at the palace of Oboro, Tinubu and his entourage were treated to exchange of pleasantries rooted in customs and tradition.

The APC candidate and his team were presented with kolanuts in demonstration of love and hospitality from the people.

Others on Tinubu’s entourage also received various titles.

Omo-Agege said he accompanied to the palace the candidate who would make the difference in the lives of the people of the Niger Delta because “he is progress and development-oriented.

“He knows what to do because he had done it before. He is our hope to change the fortunes of the region.”

Atiku, Obi no match for Tinubu —Asari Dokubo

A Niger Delta activist, Asari Dokubo, yesterday threw his weight behind Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, saying the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate is miles ahead of other contenders for Aso Rock.

“For the presidential election, I am with Tinubu because I saw what he did in Lagos State and the legacies he left behind,” he said on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Friday.

As far as he is concerned, Tinubu was instrumental in the development of Lagos State and helped to turn the fortunes of the former Nigerian capital around

Dokubo said: “Lagos has transformed from what it used to be, like a big ghetto, a junkyard to a global centre and one of the biggest economies in the whole of Africa.

“Somebody kick-started it; somebody laid the foundation,” he said.

According to him, those claiming otherwise should also know that even in the biggest cities across the world, there are people who are not okay with the government.

This, he maintained, is expected in a place like Lagos where the APC flag-bearer has succeeded in laying a good foundation.

While he noted that other contenders like Labour Party’s Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are former governors and in a similar league like Tinubu, he said Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) does not have such a credential.

“Atiku has actually never actually handled executive power. He was a spare tyre. He was a vice president,” Dokubo said.

The Niger Delta activist said though PDP, Labour Party and the APC’s manifestoes are all great, execution depends on individuals as he maintained that Tinubu is the best choice for the presidential position.

Tinubu will rule Nigeria for eight years – Sule

Nasarawa State Governor, Engr Abdullahi Sule, said yesterday Tinubu will rule Nigeria for eight years after the tenure of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Governor Sule stated this while speaking in an interview with Channels Television’s programme, Politics Today.

According to him, “Tinubu is going to rule this country for another eight years after Buhari. He is going to win by the grace of God. All the factors and everything, looking forward, is showing that Tinubu is going to win.”

On Peter Obi’s records in Anambra, compared to those of Tinubu, Governor Sule said: “The current Governor of Anambra State where Peter Obi was governor is the right person who will tell you what has happened during the period of Peter Obi.

“Today, I’m in a better position to tell you what and what because I have the files in front of me, what Tanko Al-Makura did compared with what you see on the pages of newspapers.

“So if you go back now to Anambra, look at what the Governor of Anambra is saying about Peter Obi, are you having the same thing with Asiwaju and the governors who came after him in Lagos? Is Lagos better looking today than Anambra? So there is no comparison and there is nothing to compare.

He said that in Nasarawa State, he does not know any Labour Party (LP) candidate for the 2023 general elections in the state.

“Today in Nasarawa State, you can go and check, who is the Labour Party governorship candidate? I’m not saying it with disrespect. You will not see him anywhere. I don’t even know his name. This is the party that is winning the election.

“Social media election is quite different from the practical election. LP had their flag-off in my state in Lafia, the state capital. We gave them a venue, the venue was a secondary school football pitch because we didn’t have the stadium ready.

“We didn’t have the other centre ready? There was nobody there. It was not full, not even 50% of the venue was full. That is the same party they say will win the election.”

APC storms Lagos for Tinubu/Shettima, Sanwo-Olu rally

The Lagos State Government yesterday announced traffic diversion for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential and governorship candidates, Bola Tinubu and BabajideSanwo-Olu.

The event is slated for today at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere.

The rallies will be held between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. according to the Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde.

Lagos residents were asked to plan their movement around Teslim Balogun Stadium, Funsho Williams Avenue and Alhaji Masha.

Motorists on Funsho Williams/Western Avenue inward Lagos Island will be diverted to the Express Lanes at Barracks for people going to Costain, Apapa, Ijora, Victoria Island, Lagos Island, and off to Olumegbon for people going to New Lagos/Surulere.

Motorists on Funsho Williams/Western Avenue inward Surulere/Ojuelegba will be diverted to the Express Lanes/Stadium Bridge at Alaka for people going to Mushin, Palm Groove, Ikeja, Ojota, Ikorodu, and off to Bode Thomas and Eric Moore at Iponri Estate for people going to New Lagos/Surulere.

Movement on Masha Road to Akerele/Shitta junction and Funsho Williams from Olumegbon junction to Alaka would be restricted.

Oladeinde assured that human and vehicular movement around the affected areas would be regulated.

Tinubu, Sanwo-Olu get Independent Campaign Group in Lagos

An Independent Campaign Group (ICG) has been floated in Lagos State for the re-election of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the actualisation of the presidential ambition of the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Frontline politician and Christian leader, Cardinal James Odunmbaku, popularly known as Baba Eto, is the chairman of the independent group whose role will be complementary to the ongoing campaign of the Lagos APC.

Chief of Staff to the Governor, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, who led similar effort in 2018, is the Director General of the ICG. Ayinde will be overseeing the activities of all the directorates under the group.

The ICG was constituted for the mobilisation of voters at the grassroots towards meeting the target of five million votes for the party in the presidential candidate and to deliver votes across Lagos councils for the party’s governorship flag bearer.

Odunmbaku said the mandate of the ICG was to create a penetrating structure that would independently take the party’s campaign activities to the grassroots. He said the group’s mission was to operate from the grassroots to the top level.

He said: “Our work is a simple but technical one, because we operate from the grassroots to the top level. This Independent Campaign Group is an assembly of grassroots volunteers and mobilisers working for the actualisation of the presidential ambition of our leader, Asiwaju Tinubu, and for the re-election of our performing Governor Sanwo-Olu.

“Everyone appointed into this group has been given the charge to engage Lagosians on our message. They have shown their readiness to work and take the campaign to the voters in theirs abodes. Our operation and activities are independent of the party’s ongoing campaign but we will be working in complementary to the campaign activities of the party.”

Heads of the 60 directorates in the group were sworn in yesterday at its office in GRA, Ikeja.

Bashorun Sikiru Alabi-McFoy is the Deputy Director General. Chairman of Conference 57 in Lagos, Kolade Alabi, is the adviser to the group.

There are four Assistant Directors-General for the ICG in the three senatorial districts, with Lagos West having two Deputy DGs to oversee the group’s activities in Badagry and Ikeja divisions.

Jubril Gawat, an influential social media user and Senior Special Assistant to Governor Sanwo-Olu on New Media, leads the Directorate of Digital Communications.

Tinubu won’t take part in Arise News presidential town hall meeting —APC

The Presidential Campaign Council of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday ruled out the participation of the APC presidential candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a town hall meeting scheduled by Arise News TV for December 4.

A statement issued by the Director, Media and Publicity of the APC Presidential Campaign Council, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, expressed surprise at the invitation extended to Tinubu by the television station.

The statement reads: “Our attention has been drawn to an advertisement by Arise News in connection with a Town Hall meeting scheduled for 4 December.

“We are surprised that the TV station listed our candidate, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as a participant, when there was no prior consultation with him and his aides and no consent of the candidate obtained for the advertisement.

“We deem this as professionally wrong and reckless.

“No media organisation should arrogate to itself the right to railroad any candidate to fit into its own agenda.

“As we said in an earlier statement, the busy and hectic campaign schedules of Asiwaju Tinubu will not permit him to honour all invitations from different radio and TV stations for debate and or Town Hall meetings hence our decision for him not to start with one media organisation and later ignore the others.

“In the absence of a unified and mutually acceptable all parties and all candidates platform, our candidate has been speaking directly to Nigerians since President Muhammadu Buhari launched Tinubu’s Action Plan for a Better Nigeria.

“Till date, over seven town hall meetings with strategic sectors have been held across the geopolitical zones, where the candidate and his running mate have spoken about their programmes.

“These direct engagements will continue before the election on 25 February 2023.

“We therefore urge Arise News to stop using our candidate’s name or portrait in its advertisement, forthwith.”

UK mulls foreign student restrictions to reduce immigration

•Visa: US expands interview waiver period to 48 months

PRIME Minister Rishi Sunak is considering a crackdown on foreign students bringing dependents and studying “low-quality” degrees after net migration to the UK climbed to a record half a million.

Downing Street indicated that plans to bring overall numbers down could include putting up barriers for international students’ loved ones and restricting admissions to top universities.

This would be in line with proposals being explored by Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who has previously complained about foreign students “bringing in family members who can piggyback onto their student visa” and “propping up, frankly, substandard courses in inadequate institutions.”

Around 504,000 more people are estimated to have moved to the UK than left in the 12 months to June 2022, up sharply from 173,000 in the year to June 2021.

The estimates were compiled by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), which said the jump was driven by “unique” factors including visa schemes for Ukrainians and Hong Kong citizens, and students arriving from outside the European Union.

People arriving on study visas accounted for the largest proportion of long-term immigration of non-EU nationals, at 277,000, or 39% of the total, the according to the ONS.

The Prime Minister’s official spokesman insisted Sunak was “fully committed” to bringing overall immigration levels down and blamed “unprecedented and unique circumstances” for the record high.

The official said: “We’re considering all options to make sure the immigration system is delivering, and that does include looking at the issue of student dependents and low-quality degrees.”

But such moves could meet resistance from other parts of Whitehall.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt last week insisted that immigration is required to boost growth.

“There needs to be a long-term plan if we’re going to bring down migration in a way that doesn’t harm the economy,” he said.

“We are recognising that we will need migration for the years ahead – that will be very important for the economy.”

The Department for Education could raise concerns over universities’ funding if the number of high fee-paying international students is cut.

Migration from non-EU countries, specifically students, drove the rise in levels of long-term immigration, said Jay Lindop, ONS deputy director of the centre for international migration.

“With the lifting of travel restrictions in 2021, more students arrived in the UK after studying remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic,” she added.

In a related development, The U.S. Mission is expanding the eligibility period for nonimmigrant visa renewals from 24 months to 48 months.  Applicants whose previous U.S. visa expired within the last 48 months or will expire in the next 3 months may now qualify to renew their visa without an interview.  The U.S. Mission is also opening thousands of visa renewal appointments to assist applicants who wish to renew their visas.

No-interview visa renewal appointments available now

Your previous visa was issued in Nigeria.

Your previous visa is in the same classification as your current application.

Your previous visa was a full validity, multiple entry visa.

Your previous visa expired within the last 48 months or will expire in the next 3 months from the date of application.

You have all your passports covering the entire period since receiving the previous visa and the passport with the most recent visa.

Buhari, Okowa, celebs mourn as Sammie Okposo dies at 51

•Deceased gospel artiste already with Jesus, singing with angels —Family

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari and Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa yesterday joined a horde of other sympathisers to mourn the death of popular gospel artiste Sammie Okposo.

In different statements yesterday, the two statesmen commiserated with the family, friends and associates of the late founder of the popular praise and worship platform, Okposo Praise Party.

Buhari and Okowa were joined by many celebrities yesterday to voice out their grief over the untimely death of the musician.

The late Okposo, a native of Ivori-Irri, Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State reportedly passed on in Lagos yesterday morning at the age of 51.

A movie practitioner, who asked not to be named, said the ‘Welu Welu’ crooner died after a brief illness. The film expert informed that he (Okposo) was getting medical attention after falling ill and was expected to come out strong until he gave up the ghost.

The source, however, declined information on the nature of his illness.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, President Buhari remembered Okposo for his contributions to the entertainment industry, especially the gospel music genre, and his foray into the Nigerian film industry where he also left his marks.

The statement reads: “President Muhammadu Buhari sympathises with family, friends, and professional associates of renowned gospel singer, Sammie Okposo, whose demise on Friday (yesterday) left many in Nigeria and across the world severely shocked.

“President Buhari commiserates with the Christian community, particularly Okposo’s colleagues in gospel music and the younger generation, who have over the years identified with his elevating style of praise and worship.

“The President notes the unique platform of worship created by Okposo, Okposo Praise Party, his creative contributions to the Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, and the inspiring role he played in grooming talents and mentoring them to stardom.

“President Buhari prays for the repose of the musician’s soul, urging the family to find solace in his investments of love.”

In his own condolence message to Okposo’s family yesterday, Governor Okowa, who is also the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 elections, commiserated with the Okposo family and the Isoko people in the state over the passing of their illustrious son.

In the message conveyed by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, in Asaba, Okowa expressed sadness over the passing of the “Wellu Wellu” crooner, saying that it was a big loss to the deceased’s family, Deltans and lovers of gospel music across the world.

According to him, the passing of the popular gospel artiste is a big blow to music lovers, his family, Ivori-Irri community and Isoko nation, considering his immense talent and outstanding contributions to the growth of gospel music locally and globally.

The governor described the late Okposo as a “gentleman gospel artiste”, who contributed to the growth and development of modern entertainment industry in Nigeria.

He expressed the belief that as one of the scions of the gospel genre of the music industry, Okposo would be greatly missed by his colleagues and fans.

Okowa said: “On behalf of the government and people of Delta, I mourn the passing of an illustrious son of our state and a great minister in gospel music.

“The news of his death was shocking and it is, indeed, a great loss because he was a valued asset to Deltans and Nigerians, especially as his songs continue to inspire many to worship God.” He prayed God to accept the deceased’s soul and grant fortitude to the family and friends to bear his exit.

In a statement yesterday, Okposo’s family said the deceased was already with Jesus Christ and singing with angels.

The family also said they had taken solace in the realization that the gospel artiste is happy in heaven.

“Sammie slept and went to be with the Lord on the morning of Friday November 25, 2022. We are consoled because we know he is with Jesus singing with the angels,” the statement said, requesting that “the family is allowed to grieve peacefully at this time.”

RMD, Funke Ogunmola, Lancelot Imasuen, other celebrities pay tributes

Before his emergence as a popular gospel singer, Okposo had made his mark on the Nigerian film industry where he cut his teeth as a soundtrack expert and worked with some of the industry’s veterans and legends.

He was therefore no stranger to frontline Nollywood actors like Kinglsey Ogoro, Tade Ogidan, Zeb Ejiro, Fidelis Duker and Segun Arinze whose actions were complemented by Okposo’s voice whether as actors, producers or directors.

Famed for his energetic music, which was often rendered in his local Isoko language, he was credited for popularising Isoko gospel songs in the 2000s, particularly after his hit song, ‘Welu Welu’, released in 2000.

From the early 2000s till January 2022, Okposo was always in the news for reasons that varied from his amorous relationships to his new songs. The late Okposo first fathered a child with Gloria Ibru before officially tying the nuptial knot with Ozioma in 2010. Although his dalliance with Gloria was brief and not consummated legally, it nonetheless produced a child.

He made the headlines earlier in the year with a public apology to Ozioma after admitting an extra-marital affair with another lady in the United States.

Disclosing that the incident occurred in 2021, Okposo said he had resolved to step aside from ministerial work until he would be “fully restored”.

He won multiple local and international awards during his lifetime. They include the KORA Awards Best Gospel Artiste in Africa in 2006; Crown SABC Best of African Gospel 2014; Afro Hollywood UK Best Gospel Artiste in 2005 and NEA Best Gospel Artiste of the Year in 2007 and 2013.

He also organised gospel shows such as the Sammie Okposo Praise Party (SOPP) as well as headlined other gospel concerts. Given his background in music production, Okposo owned a record label, Zamar Entertainment. His 2018 album, ‘The Statement’, was produced by Grammy-winning Kevin Bond.

One of Okposo’s most cherished legacies is the SOPP, an annual event that saw him travel across Nigeria, Africa and the world. According to those close to him, he was already preparing for another edition ahead of 2023. Among the celebrities who have paid tributes to the deceased singer is Richard Mofe-Damijo popularly known as RMD who recalled that his last interaction with Okposo was in the US exactly one month ago.

He said: “This was exactly a month ago in the US. We spent 2 weeks together and fellowshipped as men. Ate, drank and, as I’m known to do, teased you.

“Toks or Jedi would drive you to me and we would spend the entire day together. Made plans for the new year… yet here I’m struggling and looking for words to capture our relationship.

“Sam Okpoooo, as only me can call you, this was not the plan o. This one pain me enter blood.

My Prayers are with your family as you rest in power, peace and praise.

Mor Okonkwo said: “Sammie’m this was not the plan. RIP big brother. This one Hit Me ooooooooo.

Yemi Solade: “Sammie Okposo ran his race. May he rest in peace.

Okey Ogunjiofor: Rest in peace my brother.

Francis Onwochei: “This life! One time, you are here, the next time, you are on the other side, life and death, so inseparable, rest in peace Sammie.”

Funke Ogunmola: “May his soul rest in peace and may God console his family. This is really sad.

Fidelis Duker: “So sad, this is really sad. May his soul find rest, nothing in this world, just make an impact while it lasts, tomorrow is not assured.”

Tunji Bamishigbin: “May the good Lord grant him eternal rest and console his family and friends.”

Director Mo: “May his soul rest in peace, this is so sad.”

Lancelot Imasuen: “This is so sad. The news almost killed me too. Seriously, I have not cried like this in a very long while similar to when I lost my boss and benefactor Late Capt Dr Hosa Okunbo, no, Okposo dead? This is really too hard to swallow.”

Osun: Tribunal insists INEC must produce Adeleke’s certificates

•Court sacks 69 council chairmen, 393 councilors elected in October

THE Osun State Election Petition Tribunal on Friday issued a fresh order, directing the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to produce the Certificates and other documents of the state Governor-elect, Ademola Adeleke used in the 2018 governorship election. Same day, a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo on Friday has sacked Chairmen of 30 Local Government Areas, 32 Local Council Development Areas, 7 Area Offices and 393 councilors in the state elected on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) on October 15th 2022.

The Tribunal’s fresh order to INEC followed the failure of the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) to produce the certificates in the previous sitting and arguments of counsel to INEC, Adeleke and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that the Subpoena issued was addressed to REC not Chairman of the commission who is in custody of the certificates. The panel which was chaired by Justice Tertsea Kume, after listening to the argument of the counsel to Oyetola and other respondents, adjourned ruling till today.

Reading the ruling on Friday, the tribunal said an application for Subpoena is an Administrative Act and when it is granted, it becomes Judicial Act and the party upon which the Subpoena is issued must comply, citing Section 218 and 219 of the evidence act. The panel said the application was consequent to the failures of the state REC of the commission to produce the documents requested in the Subpoena. According to the ruling, the petitioners have shown sufficient reasons for the Tribunal to compel the National Chairman of INEC to produce the documents in question.

It then dismissed all the objections raised by the counsel for INEC, Adeleke and PDP and compelled the National Chairman of the commission to produce the documents in the next sitting of the panel on Thursday, December 1st 2022.

Meanwhile, while announcing the sack of 69 council chairmen and 393 councilors elected in October on the platform of the ruling APC in Osun State, Justice Nathaniel Ayoola said that the election conducted by Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSIEC) on October 15th 2022 contravened Sections 29 and 32 of the Electoral Act, 2022. According to him, “OSIEC law is inconsistent with sections 29 & 32 2022 Electoral Act that provides 180 days notice.

“Notice of election is fundamental. Section 150(3) of the Electoral Act says any election conducted in violation of the provision of the law shall be invalid. I hold the view that the plaintiff has made a good case. The case is held in favour of the plaintiff and against the respondents. The election held on 15 October 2022 is hereby declared unconstitutional, invalid, null, and void. All persons or individuals occupying those offices are sacked.”

‘Why Tinubu won’t attend Arise News presidential townhall’

The All Progressives Congress(APC) Presidential Campaign Council has declared Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu will not attend the Arise News presidential meeting.

It told the media organisation to stop advertising Tinubu will attend its town hall meeting billed for December 4, 2023.

A statement by its Director Media and Publicity Bayo Onanuga said: “Our attention has been drawn to an advertisement by Arise News in connection with a Town Hall meeting scheduled for 4 December.

“In the absence of a unified and mutually acceptable all parties and all candidates platform, our candidate has been speaking directly to Nigerians, since President Muhammadu Buhari launched Tinubu’s Action Plan for a Better Nigeria.
