  • BREAKING: Ndume joins race for Senate Presidency

BREAKING: Ndume joins race for Senate Presidency

The Chairman Senate Committee on Army Mohammed Ali Ndume on Wednesday formally joined the race to succeed Ahmad Lawan as Senate President in the 10th National Assembly.

Ndume announced his intension to vie for the position while responding to questions from reporters in Abuja.

Of all those who have signified their intention to contest position of Senate President, Ndume became the first to set out a blueprint on how he intends to pilot the affairs of the red chambers should he get the opportunity to preside.

He however advocated that the race be thrown without encumbrances of zoning as being planned by the party, but he added that his ambition would be determined to a large extent by the proposed zoning of the position and the fairness of such zoning arrangement by the All Progressives Congress (APC) as a loyal party man.

Ndume, who represents Borno South in the red chamber, said: “My decision to contest for the position of Senate President would be largely determined by the position of the party (APC), and the fairness of such arrangements.

Ndume who had vied for the position of Senate President against the incumbent Lawan, in 2019, wondered why the APC was insisting on a zoning arrangements for the National Assembly positions when it didn’t do the same during the presidential primary

He said: “The APC leadership did not take any position during the presidential primary election. Aspirants from all the geopolitical zones participated in the exercise.

“Senators should be allowed to choose a competent person among them that has adequate legislative and managerial experiences to lead the Senate.

“Zoning may not lead to the emergence of the best person for the job, that is why the decision to choose the Senate presiding officers must be the sole responsibility of the senators.”

As part of his 10-Point Agenda, according to a statement, he promised to put Nigeria and Nigerian’s interest first, if elected even as he said the issue of political inclusion and power devolution would be paramount in his agenda.

As the Senate President, he said he would “be one, not first among equals” and promised to work harmoniously and inter-dependently with the executive arm of government.

Ndume also said the relationship between the legislature and the executive and judicial arms

of would be cordial without undermining the Principles of Separation of Powers.

He pledged that the Senate under his leadership would make new laws and review existing ones to meet the yearnings and aspirations of Nigerians.

He also promised that the Senate would initiate legislation that would tackle security, welfare of citizens, create jobs, fight corruption, improve education, boost the economy and ensure infrastructure development.

He said he would work to ensure business and entrepreneurship development as well as achieve health care development.

“We would amend and review existing tax laws to generate more income, block leakages and ensure transparency through open accountability with full participation of all senators

“We will protect and improve the welfare, rights and privileges of National Assembly workers.

“We will inculcate es-spirit de-corps in order to utilise the experiences of former members by engaging them as consultants to members and committees in order to tap from their experiences.

“We will set a timeline for confirmations, passage of bills especially budgets and executive requests.

“The Constituency Development Bill will be passed to ensure transparency, equity, fairness, efficiency and effectiveness of constituency projects,” Ndume said.

  • Fed Govt: Obi-Datti’s actions treasonable

    Fed Govt: Obi-Datti’s actions treasonable

The post-election utterances of Labour Party (LP) presidential candidate Peter Obi and his running mate Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed are inciting and treasonable, the Federal Government alleged yesterday.

It accused them of threatening the country with comments capable of inciting people to violence.

Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, referred to an interview by Baba-Ahmed on a Channels Television programme, in which he urged President Muhammadu Buhari and the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) not to swear in the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

The minister spoke in Washington where he is engaging with international media organisations, including  the Washington Post, Voice of America, Associated Press and Foreign Policy Magazine, as well as think tanks, over the 2023 polls.

Mohammed said it was wrong for Obi in one breadth to seek redress in court over the outcome of the polls and in other breadth incite people to violence.

But, Obi denied the allegations, saying it was part of various campaigns of calumny directed at him.

He said: “Minister Lai accusing me of stoking insurrection is totally malicious and fictitious.”

Obi, however, did not dissociate himself from the comments by his running mate, over which the television station was sanctioned by the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

The LP campaign council said Mohammed’s allegations were aimed at discrediting Obi locally and internationally.

But, the Federal Government got the backing of Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka, who denounced what he described as the menacing utterances of Baba-Ahmed.

    Obi, Baba-Ahmed inviting insurrection,

Mohammed said both Obi and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar failed to meet the constitutional requirements to be declared as president.

Stressing that the election was credible, he faulted the reaction of Obi and his running mate, following the declaration of results.

The minister said: “Obi and his Vice, Datti Ahmed cannot be threatening Nigerians that if the President-elect, Bola Tinubu is sworn in on May 29, it will be the end of democracy in Nigeria. This is treason. You cannot be inviting insurrection, and this is what they are doing.

“Obi’s statement is that of a desperate person, he is not the democrat that he claimed to be. A democrat should not believe in democracy only when he wins the election.

”The constitution has stringent criteria for anybody who want to be president of the country. Not only must he have the plurality of votes cast in an election, he must also have scored one-quarter of the votes cast in at least 25 states.

“Only the president-elect met the criteria by scoring 8.79 million votes and having one-quarter of the entire votes cast in 29 states of the federation,” he said

The minister said Atiku who came second with 6.9 million votes was only able to make one-quarter of the votes cast in 21 states.

He said Obi came third with 5.8 million votes but won only one quarter of votes cast in 15 states.

“You cannot win election in a poll where you came a distant third position and failed to meet constitutional requirements.

“Peter Obi, while complaining of fraud, has not disowned his victory in Lagos,” he said.

Elaborating on his mission to the U.S., the minister said he was there to correct the negative narratives being promoted by naysayers and opposition on the election.

He said the opposition, having lost in the election, were alleging fraud, calling for its cancellation and constitution of an interim government.

“We have come here to balance that skewed narratives and to tell the world unambiguously that the just concluded general elections in Nigeria are the fairest, most transparent and authentic in the history of Nigeria.

“The election is the most fair and credible because of the introduction of Bimodal Voters Verification System (BVAS) which I regard as a game changer.

“BVAS technology had helped to weed out ghost and illegal voters, eliminate multiple voting and return sanity to the elections.”

The minister said President Buhari delivered on his pledge to leave behind a legacy of free, fair and credible elections.

He noted that in fulfilment of the President’s pledge to restore sanity into the electoral process, he did not confer special advantage on any political party, including the APC, during the election.

He said the President ensured that nobody used the security agencies to rig the election in his favour but created a level-playing ground for the elections to take place.

“Proof of this resolution is that the President’s party lost the presidential election in Katsina, his home state.

”Equally, the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, lost in his state, Lagos, while the Chairman of the Party, Abdullahi Adamu, lost in Nasarawa state to the Labour Party”

“The Director-General of the Campaign Organisation of our party also lost to PDP in Plateau State

“Nothing gives these elections more credence than those facts because there was no rigging in states where our bigwigs come from,” he said

The minister added that APC lost in the four states with the highest number of votes in the elections – Katsina, Kano, Kaduna and Lagos even when they were the ruling party’s controlled states.

Mohammed said the allegations of fraud being bandied by the opposition and naysayers did not add up.

According to the minister, the controversy was generated because of the inability of INEC to upload the results of the presidential election in real time.

He said the controversy was unnecessary, adding that the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IREV) was not a tool for collation results.

“Under our laws today, management of election results is manual and the court has ruled that INEC has the exclusive right to determine the mode of election, its collation and transmission.

“What happened on the 25th of February was that INEC observed that the results of the Presidential elections were not being viewed.

“INEC, suspecting a cyber attack, withheld the uploading of the results to preserve the integrity of the data.

“It immediately proceeded to float an alternative platform while asking its technicians to investigate what happened to its original portal.”

The minister explained further that it took about 9pm for the alternative portal to start working.

He said as soon as the original portal started working, the results were viewed from the two platforms.

“It is unfortunate that this is what the opposition is relying on to say the elections were rigged.

“So far, none of the political parties has come out to say that what is on Form EC8A is different from what was uploaded on IREV,” he said.

On delay in delivering election materials to certain areas, the minister said it was difficult in a country as diverse and complex as Nigeria for election materials to arrive at the same time everywhere.

He said with 176,846 polling units scattered all over the country with different topography, it would be difficult to deliver the materials simultaneously.

“In some areas, you need to use donkeys, human portals and boats to access some of these difficult areas. We also know the challenge of an unanticipated cash crunch that slowed down logistic movements.

“The redesigning of the naira did not help matters because some of the people who transported the materials insisted of cash payment which was not available,” he said.

Mohammed said the Police report identified pockets of violence scattered all over the country but they were not substantial enough to discredit the polls.

Quoting the Police report, the minister said there were 489 cases of electoral infractions during the election and 781 electoral offenders that would be charged.

Mohammed said it was a ratio of one infraction in over 300 polling units which was not sufficient to void the elections.

He said the utterance was a gladiatorial challenge directed at the judiciary, and by implication, the rest of the democratic polity.

    Soyinka blasts Baba-Ahmed

Soyinka faulted the comments by Baba-Ahmed, who claimed that INEC erred in declaring Tinubu the winner and issuing him a certificate of return, was against the constitution and that swearing him in would mark the end of democracy.

The Nobel Laureate, in a statement titled: “Media Responsibility”, also condemned the physical violence inflicted on those designated ‘strangers’ in Lagos in the lead-up to, and during governorship elections.

The statement reads in parts: “What I have read – at least, thus far – this morning, extracted from a one-and-a-half-long interview, conducted a week ago with Channels, brings once more to the fore, the critical responsibility of the media in transmitting the spoken, even recorded – word to the public.

“This is especially crucial in a time of civic uncertainty. When remarks are taken out of context, spliced into a new one, or provided a sensational headline, distortions become stamped on public receptivity, and the central intent of one’s remarks becomes completely unrecognisable.

“I denounced the menacing utterances of a Vice-Presidential aspirant as unbecoming. It was a gladiatorial challenge directed at the judiciary and, by implication, the rest of the democratic polity.”

Obi to Mohammed: Your accusations fictitious, malicious

Obi, in a statement via his Twitter handle, said he had in the past few days observed various campaigns of calumny directed at his person, with the latest being allegations attributed to the information minister.

He added: “It is most unfortunate that these consistent efforts to portray me quite contrary to what I am, and my core values, is coming from such high quarters. Minister Lai accusing me of stoking insurrection is totally malicious and fictitious.

“I have never discussed or encouraged anyone to undermine the Nigerian state; I have never sponsored or preached any action against the Nigerian state. Those initiating these actions have increasingly used their official positions and agents to make false allegations against me.

“I have never discussed or encouraged anyone to undermine the Nigerian state; I have never sponsored or preached any action against the Nigerian state. Those initiating these actions have increasingly used their official positions and agents to make false allegations against me.

”I am on record as always, advocating for peace and issue-based campaign and never campaigned based on ethnicity or religion. I am committed to due process, and presently seeking redress in the Court.

”I urge those engaged in this demarketing process to stop presenting Nigeria in such bad light. Our future generations deserve a new Nigeria, where they can live a secure and decent life like their counterparts in other climes. It is possible. –PO”

Also, Head of Obi Datti Media Office, Diran Onifade, in a statement, denied that Obi was behind any call for an insurrection and the installation of an interim government.

He said: “It is most unfortunate that at a time when the call for an interim government has been roundly rejected in Nigeria, that the minister who is well known for unfettered propaganda and untruths has taken these pressing national issues to Washington DC for the sole purpose of delegitimising Peter Obi.

“This is unbecoming and part of well-orchestrated efforts by the APC and some Government agents to discredit Mr Obi locally and internationally. We condemn in totality the ridiculous action of Minister Lai Mohammed.

“This sorry episode regrettably is coming days after the so-called leaked tape of Peter Obi’s purported conversation with Pastor David Oyedepo, which no doubt was the handiwork of deep state agents engaged in deep fake activities.

”We want to state very categorically that Mr Peter Obi has never, either during the campaign or after the stolen mandate, called for insurrection or an interim government. He campaigned on the promise of a new Nigeria, devoid of bigotry and ethnicity.”

LP chairman Abure, in a separate statement, claimed that Obi was the only candidate whose campaign was issues based during the election.

The statement reads in part: “Let me state categorically that there is no basis for that admonition. Our presidential candidate is a peaceful and law-abiding person. Despite the fact that the election was provocatively rigged, he decided to be peaceful and toe the path of justice.

“This in spite of all pressures from our supporters to move into the street to protest the outcome of the general election and to reclaim the mandate freely given to our candidate by the people, he has decided to calm the nerves in other to give the judicial process a chance.”

  • Reps, others condemn interim govt plot

Reps, others condemn interim govt plot

The House of Representatives, civil society groups and the Young Progressive Party (YPP) yesterday condemned the calls for an interim government.

They warned the aggrieved politicians behind the clamour to desist from heating up the polity.

According to the House, Nigerians should only wait for the outcome of the electoral litigation, stressing that the court will ventilate political grievances.

The House asked security agencies to be on the alert to forestall the possible breakdown of law and order.

In a resolution during plenary presided over by Deputy Speaker Ahmed Idris Wase, the House said interim government was unknown to the constitution and asked security agents to be on the alert to prevent any breakdown of law and order in the country.

The House resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance by Unyime Idem on the recent revelation by the Department or State Services that some people were plotting an interim government and working to abort the inauguration of the new government on May 29.

Idem reminded the lawmakers that the Part 1, Section 132 of the 1999 Constitution allows for a change of leadership through the ballots and a four year tenure of office for the President.

He said the idea of an interim government is undemocratic, unconstitutional, and unknown to the laws of the land, recalling that a court of competent jurisdiction had declared it illegal in the past.

He said: “On Wednesday, March 29, 2023, the State Security Service issued a warning on some individuals who are allegedly plotting to install an interim government in Nigeria.

“If the plots are allowed to see the light of the day, it will result in anarchy, with a price many generations after us will continue to pay for.

“The Judiciary is the only institution empowered by law to adjudicate over post-election matters. Some politicians have made comments that indicate their aggrievance over the last elections.

He said further that if this development is left unchecked, we might be sliding into irredeemable anarchy.

Contributing to the debate, Jimoh Ibrahim, said: “It was satanic and devilish for anybody to have thought about an interim government.”

“How can someone say they don’t want the elected representatives to be inaugurated?”

Also, Ademorin Kuye said an interim government was first muted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo who, in his letter, asked the President to cancel the presidential election.

He said advisories from the DSS should not be taken lightly, adding that there were existential threats to democracy in Nigeria which must not be allowed to come to reality.

Kuye recalled that even in the United States, there had been such threats to democracy when former President Donald Trump reportedly “sponsored” demonstrators to go to the Capitol and attack legislators.

He added: “We shouldn’t wait until something happens before we begin to take necessary actions.”

Chairman of the House Committee on Water Resources, Sada Soli Jibia said: “The motion is timely, and the DSS merely performed its statutory function by giving Nigerians and the government ‘heads-on, issuing warnings and advisories.

“Who will swear in an interim government? Who will protect it, the police or the military? We should look at this motion with a sense of responsibility and love for this nation.”

Also, Julius Ilhonvbere said the House has a responsibility to o protect and defend democracy.

Sa’ad Abdullahi (APC, Bauchi) said it was wrong to suggest that there was no evidence of people calling for an interim government, when a vice presidential candidate openly said on national television that the newly-elected government should not be inaugurated.

But Sergius Ose-Ogun (PDP, Edo) and Ossai Nicholas Ossai (PDP, Delta) asked the House not to adopt the motion because it was a waste of time discussing what does not exist.

They queried the DSS for coming out to say that they suspected a plot to install an interim government without making any arrest.

Ose-Ogun said: “How can you wake up and tell us that some people want to derail democracy, yet, you have not arrested or named the suspects?”

Ossai Nicholas Ossai who said the action of the DSS was “speculative”, argued that what the agency was expected to do was to name those calling for an interim government.

The Concerned Nigerians for Sustainable Democracy called on Nigerians to rise against those calling for interim government and military coup.

The group said the call has become necessary to safeguard democracy.

The Convener/Coordinator of the group, Dr. Amps Gizo, told reporters in Abuja that it is undemocratic for some unscrupulous elements to call for an interim government and a military coup after the 2023 general election has been won and lost.

Gizo said: “With the new government to be ushered in by May 29th 2023, the Nigerian citizens are expecting much from the Tinubu-led Government.

There are negative agitations to truncate the will of the people where Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been voted by the majority votes to lead the nation.

“We are calling on all well-meaning Nigerians to rise against these anti-democratic elements and ensure that democracy thrives.”

YPP faulted the call for an interim government, saying it is illegal.

A statement by the YPP National Publicity Secretary, Mr Wale Martins in Abuja, said: “We are vehemently opposed to such calls as they are not in tandem with the rule of law which is the bedrock of democratic governance.”

  • Trump pleads not guilty to 34 felony counts

Trump pleads not guilty to 34 felony counts

Former United States (U.S.) President Donald Trump yesterday pleaded not guilty to 34-count charge on felony of falsifying business records.

With his arraignment, Trump became a criminal defendant – the first time in the U.S. history that a sitting or former president would face such trial.

In a Manhattan court yesterday, Trump was arraigned on criminal charges stemming from a hush money payment to a porn actress during his 2016 campaign.

A stony-faced Trump entered the courtroom, flanked by security officers and his legal team. He did not respond to reporters’ questions.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges against him.

He entered the court without any one opening the door for him. Even the policeman who led him into the courtroom, shut the door, which Trump opened by himself.

Trump sat with his hands folded as he entered his plea flanked by his lawyers.

“Not guilty,” he said when asked how he pleaded.

He was, therefore, advised of his rights by the judge.

Judge Juan Merchan also warned Trump that he could be removed from the courtroom if he is disruptive, but Trump spoke only a few times to respond to questions.

He will return to court in December, but his lawyers asked for him to be excused from attending the hearing in person because of extraordinary security proceedings.

Taken together, the charges carry a maximum sentence of 136 years in prison under New York law. But an actual prison sentence, if he is convicted at a trial, would almost certainly be far less than that.

On its own, the falsification of business records in New York is a misdemeanour punishable by no more than one year in prison. It is elevated to a felony punishable by up to four years in prison when done to advance or conceal another crime.

The former president had pumped his fist as he left Trump Tower accompanied by Secret Service agents before travelling in an eight-car motorcade down a road along the East River to the court.

As he travelled to court, he posted on his social media platform: “Heading to Lower Manhattan, the Courthouse. Seems so surreal – wow, they are going to arrest me. Can’t believe this is happening in America. Maga!”

Wearing his signature dark suit and red tie, he turned and waved to crowds outside the courthouse building before heading inside to be fingerprinted and processed – a remarkable reckoning after years of investigations into his personal, business and political dealings and an extraordinary moment in U.S. history.

The booking and appearance before Judge Merchan was relatively brief – though hardly routine – as Trump learnt for the first time the charges against him.

TV cameras were not allowed in the courtroom.

Trump, who was impeached twice by the US House of Representatives but was never convicted in the US Senate, is the first former president to face criminal charges.

Speaking ahead of the court appearance, Trump’s lawyer Joe Tacopina told reporters: “He is strong and ready to go.”

Tacopina said in a TV chat that the former president wouldn’t plead guilty to lesser charges, even if it might resolve the case. He also said he didn’t think the case would make it to a jury.

New York police said they were ready for large protests by Trump supporters, who share the Republican former president’s belief that the New York grand jury indictment and three additional pending investigations are politically motivated and intended to weaken his bid to retake the White House in 2024. However journalists often outnumbered protesters.

Trump, a former reality TV star, has been hyping that narrative to his political advantage, saying he raised more than $8m in the days since the indictment on claims of a “witch hunt”.

  • Poll: REC in trouble over alleged bribes from governor

Poll: REC in trouble over alleged bribes from governor

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) is in trouble after allegedly collecting princely sums as bribes from an out-going governor.

The said REC, it was learnt, was taking orders from the governor contrary to his oath of office.

The governor attempted to smuggle in the ballot papers he printed for the March 18 governorship and House of Assembly elections, The Nation learnt.

But unknown to him, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had embossed special security features on its papers.

The headache of the REC was how to refund the huge bribe cash he has collected from the governor.

On Sunday, The Nation exclusively reported that INEC may report two RECs to President Muhammadu Buhari for sanctions because of alleged misconduct and insubordination.

Some RECs were alleged to have engaged in activities capable of sabotaging the general election.

The same report gave insights into plans by the electoral umpire to carryout disciplinary action on erring officers.

According to investigations, the affected REC allegedly relocated to the Government House in a state controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), for instructions on how to conduct elections.

The REC, who is one of the 19 inaugurated about three months before the general election, fell for the mouth-watering offer of the governor.

Although the REC and the governor smartly “manoeuvred the system” during the Presidential election, they failed during the governorship poll.

It was gathered that the plot to swap INEC ballot papers with fake ones did not succeed at the last minutes because of the vigilance of some officers of the electoral commission and other stakeholders.

A top source, who spoke in confidence, said: “The affected REC became a regular face in Government House and he was receiving directives from the governor on vital logistics for the elections.

“The REC virtually became a member of the cabinet of the governor to the bewilderment of other INEC staff in the state.

“We later got to know that the governor parted with irresistible sum in order to hijack INEC operations in the state and produce his successor.

“One of the plans of the governor was to produce ballot papers  which will be used to replace those thumb-printed by legitimate voters who might have been captured by Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS). The said ballot papers were stored in Government House.

“Also, the governor was not aware that INEC ballot papers had special security features.

“Unfortunately, some of the fake ballot papers were intercepted on the eve of the governorship election by some security agencies. Integrity test indicated that they had no security features like INEC papers.

“The Administrative Officer of INEC in the state was mandated to oversee the technical parts of the governorship and House of Assembly elections.”

Responding to a question, the source added: “The game plan failed and the governor didn’t succeed to produce his successor. The REC is under investigation for his misconduct.”

Another source told our reporter: “The issue between the governor and the REC is how to refund the huge cash . The governor is not ready to accept any excuse.

“The REC has been running from pillar to post having spent part of the cash which he cannot make up. Some influential politicians have been mediating between the two camps because they can be prosecuted later if the deal becomes a public scandal.”

The Centre for Transparency Advocacy (CTA) had raised the alarm on the conduct of some RECs.

In a statement, the CTA demanded an inquiry into the conduct of some staff.

The statement reads: “You may recall that CTA and other Civil Society Organisations condemned the appointment of some partisan Resident Electoral Commissioners leading up to the election. It appears that these set of INEC officials habitually work at variance with set guidelines and orders from the INEC headquarters.

“It was alleged that they hoarded result sheets and gave them out to highest bidders who apparently used the result sheets to tamper with actual outcomes of polls from the polling units.

“It was also alleged that these same group of INEC staff hoarded the codes and access to the BVAS hence the non-transmission of results from the polling units as stipulated by law. This is unacceptable and should be discouraged.

“INEC should as a matter of priority, set up an enquiry to investigate its staff, especially some Resident Electoral Commissioners, the Electoral Officers at the LGAs, supervisory presiding officers and dubious ad hoc staff. We ask that all those involved in electoral malpractice should be arrested, prosecuted and punished adequately. This will serve as a deterrent.

“INEC should have the political will to cleanse itself of these putrid impurities that has cast doubts to its integrity and neutrality.”

  • Former US President Trump arrested

    Former US President Trump arrested

Former US President Donald Trump has been formally arrested after his arrival at a New York courthouse where he will become the first former US president to face criminal charges.

The frontrunner to be the Republicans’ choice for the White House in 2024 surrendered to authorities at the Manhattan district attorney’s office in the same building.

Minutes earlier, he pumped his fist as he left his nearby home at Trump Tower before being escorted to Manhattan Criminal Courthouse in a motorcade by his Secret Service protection team.

Wearing a dark blue suit and red tie, he is due to be fingerprinted and processed but it is unclear whether a mugshot of him will also be taken.

Trump will then make his way to the courtroom for his arraignment where the formal charges will be disclosed and he is then expected to enter a plea. He is not expected to be in handcuffs during the proceedings.

On his social media platform, Truth Social, he wrote: “Heading to Lower Manhattan, the Courthouse. Seems so SURREAL – WOW, they are going to ARREST ME. Can’t believe this is happening in America. MAGA!”

Television cameras will not be allowed inside the courtroom, after a ruling by Judge Juan Merchan, but five still photographers will have access before the hearing begins to take pictures of Trump and the scene.

However, TV cameras will be allowed in the hallways of the building so Trump may talk to reporters when he is there.

The indictment – a formal charge – contains multiple accusations of falsifying business records, including at least one felony offence, it has been reported.

A felony is usually defined as a crime punishable by a year or more in prison. Misdemeanours are less serious and are often defined as offences punishable by fines or less than 12 months behind bars.

Trump, 76, is being investigated over an alleged $130,000 (£104,000) hush money payment given to porn actress Stormy Daniels on his behalf in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election, which he won.

It was allegedly made to prevent her from discussing a sexual encounter she said she had with Trump at a hotel in Lake Tahoe in 2006.

He has denied having a sexual relationship with Ms Daniels.

Trump’s former personal lawyer Michael Cohen has said the ex-president directed him to arrange the $130,000 payment to Ms Daniels.

And Trump has acknowledged reimbursing him for the payment, with the Trump Organization logging the reimbursement as legal expenses.

Trump has denied any wrongdoing and is due to plead not guilty.

He calls the indictment a “witch-hunt” and claims it is politically motivated as the man who has led the investigation into him, District Attorney Alvin Bragg, is a Democrat.

Trump also says the probe is an attempt to weaken his bid to retake the White House next year.

A conviction would not prevent him from running for or winning the presidency in 2024.

Cole, APC leaders worked against Tinubu in Rivers- Wike

Rivers Governor Nyesom Wike has said that the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) Tonye Cole and his supporters worked against their presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu but failed in their own elections.

The Governor said while Cole was working for the emergence of the Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, he led the campaign for a southern Presidency that delivered bulk votes to Tinubu in Rivers.

Wike insisted that he owed nobody any apology for supporting the emergence of a Southern president.

Addressing Cole, he said: “How can people say that they rigged you? You said you made your presidential candidate to win. Your presidential candidate won but you don’t get one senate (seat). What kind of winning is that?

“They supported PDP candidate and they lost woefully. They didn’t get 25 per cent. We supported a southern president for equity, fairness and justice and we took the senate seats. We took 11 House of Reps out of 13. We prove to them we are responsible and we are in charge of the state”.

Wike wondered why Cole and not his lawyers or agents were the ones going to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office to collect certified true copies (CTC) of electoral materials.

The governor spoke during the inauguration of Government Secondary School in Kpor  Community of Gokana Local Government Area on Tuesday.

Wike said the show of desperation by Cole suggested a sinister motive that should not be waved away but queried.

The Governor dismissed as baseless the allegations raised by Cole against the PDP that they attacked him and prevented him from accessing INEC office in Port Harcourt.

Wike explained that because of the popularity of PDP in Rivers following its excellent performance, the party won all three senatorial seats, 11 House of Representatives seats and all 32 State House of Assembly seats.

Wike described as laughable the decision of the governorship candidates of Accord party, Chief Dumo Lulu-Briggs and the Labour Party, Beatrice Itubo,  to approach the election tribunal to contest the results.

He said such candidates were not opponents in the election but were only desirous to be on the ballot.

  • Second Niger bridge opens on May 15, Lagos-Ibadan for completion April 30 – Fashola

Second Niger bridge opens on May 15, Lagos-Ibadan for completion April 30 – Fashola

The second Niger bridge should be fully open to traffic by May 15, Minister of Works and Housing Babatunde Fashola has stated.

He also announced the Lagos-Ibadan expressway should be completed by April 30.

The Minister spoke on Tuesday while inspecting and confirming the completion of the Loko-Oweto bridge and link roads between Benue and Nasarawa States.

Concerning the second Niger bridge and the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, Fashola said: “On the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the date we have now, and once again, I want to appeal first to commuters on that road for their continuous patience, forbearance and understanding – it is a difficult project to execute because it is perhaps one of the busiest roads in the country.

“Building through 40,000 vehicular traffic daily is not an easy undertaking, we can’t shut down the road. So, we have to also manage and divert traffic for the safety of those who are involved in the construction.

“So, I want to implore that forbearance continues because the headline date we have for completion now is the 30th of April this month. So, in barely about four weeks, 26 days, plus or minus, that road should also be fully completed, open to traffic from Lagos to Ibadan, and beyond the toll gate up to kilometer 116. That will be done by the 30th of April.

“What will be left is 9 kilometers, from kilometers 17 to 27. And the reason why that will be left is that the Oyo state government is constructing drainage across the road, and we have decided that we need the drainage because it will help address the issue of excessive flooding and climate change in Oyo state.

“But we believe that it is better to wait for them to finish that project, and then complete the remaining 9 kilometers, instead of building it now and then having them cut it up again. So, just 9 kilometers outside Ibadan is what will be left. But by the 30th of April, your end-to-end, from Lagos tollgate to the Ibadan tollgate, the road should be open on the 30th of April for traffic.

“Yesterday, we had a periodic meeting in the Office of the Chief of Staff to the President where the contractors, our team, all reviewed the challenges (on the second Niger bridge) and how to solve them.

“The link road (of the second Niger bridge) that we formally opened to traffic, the date we have now is the 15th of May, as of yesterday. We are rolling out all the steps to support the contractor to see that that date is achieved.

“A lot of snag resolutions are going to start; lane marking on the bridge will soon start and erection of signages will also soon start. Just about two weeks before the end of the term, the President will be invited to the completion, and maybe any day thereafter, he will be able to fly in and do the ceremony. But by the 15th of May, the bridge should be fully open to traffic.”
