•Ibom Air apologises to passengers for delay

THE authorities of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have handed over to the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) an unruly traveller who was evacuated from an Ibom Air plane on Friday, protesting the May 29 inauguration of the president-elect.

The yet-to-be-named man was one of the passengers on the Abuja-Lagos flight.

The management of the airline confirmed yesterday that the flight crew deemed his continuous unruly behaviour unsafe and had to invite airport security to help with the situation.

He was heard in a video that has now gone viral as he was being dragged off the plane by security officials shouting: “Obidients (the sobriquet for supporters of Peter Obi, the candidate of Labour Party in the February 25 presidential election) you’re here. They are doing this to me. Obidients you’re here, I am naked. Obidients you’re here, I am going naked.”

The Nation gathered that the man had gone into an argument with some co-passengers on the February 25 presidential election.

He soon began to raise his voice and later started shouting that the May 29 inauguration of the President-elect must not be allowed.

Other passengers, who were embarrassed by his conduct, openly complained about him, prompting the flight crew to invite the airport security officials.

About six security officials of FAAN soon stormed the plane to take the suspect off.

The drama delayed the take-off of the plane for about an hour.

    Airline apologises, narrates what transpired

Giving an account of the incident in a statement yesterday, the management of Ibom Air apologised to passengers for the take-off delay owing to the conduct of the passenger.

The Group Manager, Marketing and Communication, Aniekan Essienette, who signed the statement, said: “We wish to inform the public about an incident on our 6 pm flight from Abuja to Lagos on Friday, 31 March, 2023.

“A passenger stood up and began addressing other passengers in a manner considered inappropriate and unruly, as he was making other passengers nervous.

“Our crew deemed his continuous unruly behavior unsafe and called on airport security to help with the situation. Upon his refusal to stop or disembark peacefully, the security operatives were left with no choice but to forcefully disembark the passenger as a last option.

“We are aware that several videos and reports of this incident are circulating on social media and wish to provide the right perspective.

“Ibom Air wishes to assure our passengers that we maintain very high safety and service standards and will never compromise the safety and security of our passengers.

“We apologise to the affected passengers for the time it took to disembark this passenger, which caused an otherwise on-time departure to be delayed by an hour.”

Security agencies briefed as suspect is handed over

An official of FAAN told The Nation yesterday that the passenger was handed over to the Airport Police Command and the DSS.

The official, who pleaded not to be named, said: “What happened yesterday (Friday) is a national issue. We were recently told about plan of an interim government and just yesterday, a man stood up and protested that the president-elect would not be sworn in.

“Such a case is beyond the Aviation Security and FAAN. What AVSEC and FAAN did was to do documentation and also check the manifest and the aircraft to be sure the passenger in question was working alone.

“This caused delay in the aircraft and also caused unrest amongst passengers on board.

“After the passenger was taken out of the aircraft, he was handed over to the Airport Police Command. And when matters such as this occur, the police usually involve the DSS, and I think they (DSS) were duly briefed in case it is an act of terrorism or threat to national security.

“So, the DSS will be briefed, and if they feel he should be detained, he will be detained.

“So, the passenger was handed over to the police yesterday because this case is bigger than what we think as it could incite people and even cause unrest.”

There was no immediate reaction from the police and the DSS.

Spokesman of the Agency, Dr Peter Afunanya, did not respond to calls yesterday on the suspect.

However, Afunaya said in a statement on Wednesday that the agency had identified some people plotting the setting up of an interim government in the country as part of a grand plan to truncate the swearing in the president elect.

He said the plotters during “their many meetings have weighed various options, which include, among others, to sponsor endless violent mass protests in major cities to warrant a declaration of State of Emergency.

“Another is to obtain frivolous court injunctions to forestall the inauguration of new executive administrations and legislative houses at the Federal and State levels.”

It expressed support for President Muhammadu Buhari in “his avowed commitment to a hitch-free handover and will assiduously work in this direction.”

The 36 state governors, during a meeting on Thursday, condemned the plot and asked the DSS to arrest and prosecute the brains behind the plot.

    Passenger’s action dangerous, says Keyamo

Mr. Festus Keyamo, the Director of Communications to President-elect Bola Tinubu, yesterday described the action of the passenger as dangerous.

Keyamo, in a tweet, said: “One emotionally and mentally dysfunctional ‘OBIdient’ who carried his ‘Tinubu-must-not-be-sworn-in’ campaign to a local flight yesterday (Friday) and was forcefully deboarded when he became disruptive, has just seen the difference between causing trouble in real life and mobilising the headless mob on social media for likes and retweets.

“And it is important that since this dangerous action amounting to public nuisance was carried out in supposed support of one of the presidential candidates, that candidate MUST come out to condemn it unreservedly.

“Bola Tinubu has since issued a statement calling on his supporters to tone down the rhetoric and to embrace national healing and reconciliation. We expect no less from the other candidates.”

Fani-Kayode: Security must be beefed up around airports

In a separate tweet, former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode said Nigeria probably would have had a different story to tell today if the passenger had had on him a weapon at the time he was taken off the plane.

His words: “The actions of the terrorist on the plane stand condemned, and I can only thank God that he did not have a weapon otherwise things could have been far worse.

“I call on the security agencies to beef up security at the airports and keep an eagle eye on all passengers.

“I also call for restraint even in the face of these provocations. We must maintain the peace and ensure that our unity is sustained. We must not allow them to provoke us into responding in a irrational, violent, unlawful or unreasonable manner.

“We must be prayerful, focused and calm and we must ensure that nothing disrupts the stability, peace and unity of our nation or the swearing in of our President-elect.”

FAAN hands over ‘Obidient’ passenger to Police, DSS

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) said it has handed over an Ibom Air passenger to the Police.

The passenger whose name is unknown at the moment was on Friday evening dragged off an Abuja to Lagos-bound flight.

The passenger had announced that the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, must not be sworn in on May 29.

In the video which went viral, the man was heard shouting as he was being carried off the aisle, “Obidients you’re here. They are doing this to me. Obidients you’re here, I am naked. Obidients you’re here, I am going naked.”

It took the efforts of about six airport officials to evacuate him after delaying the aircraft for more than an hour.

The management of Ibom Air also shared its account of what happened onboard its aircraft at the Nnamdi Azikwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja.

The airline apologised to passengers for the one-hour delay due to the actions of the passenger.

The airline in a statement by its Group Manager, Marketing and Communication, Aniekan Essienette stated: “We wish to inform the public about an incident on our 6 pm flight from Abuja to Lagos on Friday, 31 March 2023.

  • Ganduje, Kano governor-elect clash over advisory on state affairs

Ganduje, Kano governor-elect clash over advisory on state affairs

Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Friday cautioned the governor-elect, Engr. Abba Kabir Yusuf, to exercise patience and desist from issuing official pronouncement in the form of public advisory in order not to cause unnecessary confusion in the state.

“I am still the governor,” Ganduje stated.

The governor spoke in a statement by the commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Malam Muhammad Garba in reaction to a directive issued from the office of the governor-elect, warning individuals, groups and organisations undertaking construction on public places to keep off.

“The action of the governor-elect amounts to jumping the gun by issuing  directive on a matter affecting government laid down policy while the incumbent is yet to run his full term,” the governor said.

According to Malam Garba, as far as the division of power is concerned as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje remains the governor with executive powers until May 29 and reserves the right to carry out his functions in public interest even on the eve of his exit.

“Until he subscribes to the oath of office as governor in May 29, he (Yusuf) remains what he is -a governor-elect and does not have the powers of the governor.

“All he can do is to reverse some of the actions taken by his predecessor when he assumes office if there is a valid reason to do so.

“No governor-elect has the constitutional or legal powers to determine the direction of a state until he is sworn in,” the statement added.

The commissioner noted that state governors wielded enormous powers to allocate plots and therefore every government has undertaken such exercise including the previous administration which the governor-elect had served.

He also stated that based on available records, the previous administration had made land allocation in some of the public places the governor-elect categorically mentioned which include the city wall, with allocation of land from Kofar Nassarawa to Kofar Mata; shops at the Kofar Mata Eid Prayer Ground facing the Orion Cinema and from Kofar Mata to ‘Yan yashi opposite the Eid Ground and from Kofar Kabuga to Kofar Famfo facing the old campus of Bayero University.

Malam Garba explained that the advisory issued by the governor-elect has generated a lot of tension in the state and advised him to desist from such in order to avoid causing confusion.

He also called on individuals and organisations who acquired land after following due process and procedures not to be threatened by the directive.

It will be recalled that the Governor – elect had earlier issued an advisory to individuals, groups and organistions to discontinue ongoing construction works on public places, warning that anyone who elects to contravene the advisory, was doing that at his own peril.

Deaf, dumb 15-year-old girl gang-raped in Nasarawa narrates ordeal

    • Says I feel damaged for life, have thoughts of suicide

    • ‘How my attackers gagged me with cloth, took turns to rape me’

    • Suspects: We only slept with her for three minutes each

Sexually assaulted children survivors are usually hesitant to speak out about their violation for fear of public ridicule. Not so for 15-year-old Binta Isa, a deaf and dumb girl allegedly raped by two strong young boys in Kyena community, Obi Local Government Area, Nasarawa State.

Although she had to tell her pathetic story with the aid of an interpreter, the pains in her narration was nonetheless as clear as crystal.

“I have difficulty getting enough rest since the incident occurred on March 2, 2023,” she said.

“I sleep and wake up drenched in sweat, even when it’s cold.

“I consistently experience nightmares,” she added amid tears as she curled up on a seat at the headquarters of the Nasarawa State Police Command, Shandam Road, Lafia.

Binta, a beautiful girl suffering from hearing and speaking impairment, attends Adult Special School, Kyena, Obi Local Government, Nasarawa State, situated a few kilometres from her home.

A few days ago, she was lured and raped by two heartless young boys on her way to her mother’s farm, not too far from the house.

According to her, “They lured me into their apartment with deceit, saying that they wanted to show me something interesting.

“Because they are familiar with me, I didn’t think that they could act in that way.

“They use force on me, using a cloth to cover my mouth after which they took turns to have carnal knowledge of me.

“When I got into their room, it dawned on me that these guys were planning something bad for me.

“My bid to go out was resisted by them. They force me on the bed, forcibly pulled off my clothes, and despite my efforts to beg them, they viciously carried out their evil plan on me.

“I tried very hard to beg them, but since I cannot talk properly, my pleas fell on deaf ears.

“They took turns to penetrate me while I was in pains. I almost died because I was bleeding.”

Further explaining how she was raped by the accused persons, she said: “As soon as I entered their room, one of them, Hashimu, carried and put me on his lap, caressed my breasts and force his finger into my private parts.

“Penetrating my inner wear, he dipped his finger inside my private part, rubbed my breasts and forcefully pulled off my clothes.

“I screamed and cried for help but he covered my mouth and threatened to kill me if I ever told anyone. He forced his fingers too deep and the pain was really unbearable.

“I cried and struggled to escape but his grip was too strong. It was actually uncomfortable and suffocating, but they didn’t care.

“They later dragged me to the bed, took turns to penetrate me at different times and turns. They sexually molested me.”

Binta said she had been emotionally wrecked since the sexual molestation carried out on her by the two boys, and she feels scarred especially carrying a festering wound allegedly inflicted on her.

She regrets that her chastity was stolen and shattered by the two evil boys.

She said: “I have been suffering from insomnia (lack of sleep) since then as images of the abuse kept flashing through my mind, the pains I was going through while they were attempting to forcefully penetrate me, my efforts to shout to no avail.

“I had a troubled experience at the hands of the two boys and I lost my chasity. It is killing.

“The experience weighed down my spirit. I am shattered,” she said, bursting into tears.

Binta continued: “Seeing them at the police station, I felt dirty and useless. I thought about purity and chasity which I’m unworthy of.

“They have made my life miserable due to the horrible things they did to me. Seeing them again reopened my wounds.”

The distraught teenager said she was so shattered by the experience that she was contemplating suicide.

Her violators, Aminu Hashimu (24) and Lukman Dogara (18), had laid an ambush and lured her to their residence at Okpe Street in Obi community and forced their way into her, taking advantage of her disabilities.

Speaking to our correspondent, they both pleaded for forgiveness, saying: “We only raped her for three minutes each. We did one round each using two minutes.

“We have been admiring her and we did that to satisfy our sexual urge. We are so sorry for what happened,” Aminu said.

Binta’s father, Mallam Isa, a farmer and truck driver, was not at home when the incident occurred.

He told our correspondent that “Binta is my second daughter. Since she was born, she has suffered from speech impairment.

“I didn’t know what to do. But since she is my daughter, I felt I should give her the care and attention she needs as a father

“It is quite unfortunate that this happened. I won’t take it lightly with the boys. Even as a farmer, I will do my best to ensure I get justice.”

Mallam Isa said he could not imagine that some people could be so wicked or could think of taking advantage of her daughter’s condition to perpetuate such an evil act.

He appealed to the police and other security agencies to apprehend the suspects and get them to face the law.

The mother, Sa-adatu, said the suspects are wicked souls meant for hell. According to her, she sent for Binta to join them in the farm:

“When I discovered that she didn’t come at the time I was expecting her, I decided to walk back to the house. The farm is not too far away from the house.

“While I was walking home, along the path, I heard a muffled cry from the direction of the boys’ residence. I knew on impulse that it was my daughter’s voice.

“I dashed straight to the door of the building and forced it open. Behold, it was my daughter lying down, already fainting.

“I shouted for help. The boys ran away, fleeing the structure in a jiffy. I called out to the people around to help take her to the hospital.

“I rushed to the police station to lodge a complaint, leading to their arrest.”

The mother demanded nothing but prompt justice, saying: “The injury of the rape will haunt my daughter for the rest of her life.  It has put her through a traumatic experience.

“We want justice because my daughter is deeply in pains and undergoing psychological trauma, which has dogged her path daily since the incident

“All we want is justice, one that may give her an ounce of closure in the long run.

“My daughter’s encounter with the two boys will heavily took toll on her growing up, educationally, physically, mentally and emotionally.”

She described the two boys’ action as horrendous and abominable acts against the hapless young girl.

The Chief Executive Officer, Centre for Care and Development in Nigeria (CCDN), a non-governmental organisation, Blessing Tulari, said Binta’s case highlighted the growing incidents of rape in the state.

She said: “Justice must prevail for Binta Isa and for countless other victims of rape in the state.

“The government must take action to ensure that the perpetrators are held accountable for their actions and victims receive the support and justice they deserve.”

The Nasarawa State Police command, in a statement by the command PPRO DSP Rahman Nansel, said “On 2/3/2023 at about 1830 hrs, a complaint was lodged at Obi Division that one Aminu Hashimu 24 years of age and Lukman Dogara 18 years both males of Owolosho Street, Obi LGA of Nasarawa State criminally conspired and raped a teenager of 15 years”

“Upon receipt of the report, an investigation and manhunt were launched by police operatives attached to Obi Division for the suspects.

“Consequently, on 3/3/2023, the aforementioned suspects were arrested at different locations in Obi town and Lafia, respectively”

“Preliminary investigation revealed that the suspects lured the victim who had hearing impairment to their residence at Okpe Street, Obi, and had unlawful carnal knowledge of her. The suspects have confessed to the commission of the crime.

“The victim has been taken to the hospital for medical examination and the Commissioner of Police, CP Maiyaki Baba, has ordered for  comprehensive investigation into the case; upon conclusion, the suspects will be charged to court for prosecution,” the statement concluded.

Our Correspondent gathered from medical experts that victims of rape experience moderate to severe post traumatic stress disorder and have a hard time overcoming it.

Their condition typically takes the form of nightmares, flashbacks, anger, depression, suicidal thoughts, feelings of guilty, eating disorder and shame that can surface immediately or years after.

Psychology experts have equally averred that long after sexual defilements and abuses might have been committed, victims face gradually slipping into mental health challenges that impact negatively on society at large.

Further research shows post traumatic stress disorder, PTSD which is a mental health condition triggered by a terrying event, either by experiencing or witnessing it.

Section 31 of the child rights act of 2003, which has been domesticated in 28 states including Nasarawa State, criminalises sexual abuse and prescribes a jail term of 14 years for anyone convicted.

PDP crisis: twist as Fayose threatens to sue party

Former Ekiti State governor, Ayo Fayose, is demanding an apology from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which, on Thursday, lifted the suspension placed on him and some other stalwarts for alleged anti-party activity.

Fayose  said the apology must be made within 72 hours (three days).

The former governor also wondered yesterday what the party would have done  to him and others if the PDP presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar had won the February 25 election.

Fayose ,in a letter to the PDP by his counsel, Akinwale Kol-Taiwo of R Kolawole-Taiwo & Co, threatened to go to court should it fail to apologise to him for alleged defamation.

His grouse was the letter issued by the PDP National Publicity Secretary which Fayose claimed, was  “reckless, irresponsible, unsubstantiated, unfounded, malicious and defamatory” of his reputation.’

He also said the reversal of his  suspension was done without recourse to laid down procedure/due process of law as contained in the Constitution  of the PDP  Constitution (as amended in 2017).

The counsel said: “Consequently, the libelous press release made on 23rd March 2023 issued through the office of the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, is reckless, irresponsible, unsubstantiated, unfounded, malicious and defamatory of our client’s reputation and apparent among other things that the aforesaid libelous press release was designed to smear and tarnish the good reputation of our client in the eyes of right-thinking members of the society, as well as to subject our client to odium, ridicule, and public opprobrium in presence of his political associates and the general public.

“While we do not contend that the Peoples’ Democratic Party reserve the power(s) to take disciplinary action against any erring member(s), it is much more pertinent to state that the said power(s) to take disciplinary action is not absolute, the said power(s) to take disciplinary action is limited to doctrine of fair hearing as enshrined in the Peoples’ Democratic Party Constitution (as amended in 2017) and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999) as amended. As such your disciplinary powers must not be seen to infringe on the right of another citizen or person.

“There is no doubt that the action of the National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (NWC) in this purported suspension saga acted rashly on baseless and unfounded allegations, thereby making our Party- Peoples’ Democratic Party not just look weak but disorganized.

“Therefore, it is our client’s instruction as it has become imperative, to demand an unreserved apology to be made by the National Working Committee of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (NWC) in an issued press release to all affected leaders particularly our client- Ayodele Fayose.

“TAKE NOTICE, that unless our client’s demand is met promptly within 72 hours of your receipt of this letter, we shall not hesitate to commence legal actions against the Peoples’ Democratic Party for odium, ridicule the illegal, unconstitutional, null and void suspension occasioned to his person in presence of the general public.”

What PDP would have done to us if Atiku had won presidency – Fayose

Also yesterday, Fayose, said on his Twitter handle  @GovAyoFayose that the PDP would have been more harsh on him and other members  who were suspended for alleged anti-party activity, if Alhaji Atiku had emerged as winner of the presidential election.

“Imagine what they would have done if Atiku had won! They would have been more than heinous politically. Should we thank God Atiku lost?” he said.

“At least, as it is now, the party can now pick the pieces and face tomorrow as we bid Ayu farewell.

“Think of this…imagine a PDP National Working Committee that should be in very sober and reflective mood after losing a national election, going after leaders perceived to be their enemies, including a sitting governor in the party and suspending them!”

Suspended with him on March 23 were former President of the Senate, Pius Anyim; Prof Dennis Ityavyar and Aslam Aliyu.

Their suspension was, however, reversed on Thursday soon after the embattled National Chairman of the party, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu stepped aside on account of a high court order.

Govs, IPAC, Olanipekun, others denounce interim govt plot

    • Ask DSS to arrest proponents urgently
    • Northern Elders urge party leaders to restraint spokesmen

The 36 state governors spoke with one voice yesterday against the agitation for an interim national government by some yet to be named people.

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF); the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) which is the umbrella body of registered political parties in Nigeria; the Ibo Senior Citizens Affairs Foundation (ISCAF); the immediate past Chairman of the Body of Benchers (BOB), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN) and the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) are the latest on the list of eminent groups and individuals who have spoken out against the plot.

The Department of State Services (DSS) confirmed on Wednesday that the plot to truncate the May 29 inauguration of  the President-elect was real.

It said it had identified some of the plotters but did not disclose their identities.

The objective, it said, was to forestall the inauguration of new executive administrations and legislative houses at the federal and state levels.

The 36 state governors, at a meeting 24 hours after the DSS confirmation, asked the security agency to urgently apprehend and prosecute the brains behind the plot.

The NGF, in a communiqué signed by its chairman, Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal, condemned any unconstitutional means of regime change and pledged its commitment to continue to defend Nigeria’s democracy as elected leaders.

It said it was not enough for the authorities to just issue statements.

The DSS, it said, should go the whole hog by “immediately arresting and prosecuting all those involved in the plot as a matter of urgency.”

Its words: “The Forum deliberated extensively on the alleged plot by some unscrupulous elements to install an interim government as contained in the recent statement issued by the Department for State Services (DSS).

“Governors condemned in the strongest terms, any unconstitutional means of regime change and pledged its commitment to continue to defend Nigeria’s democracy as elected leaders.

“In addition, the Forum believes that issuing statements without arrests is akin to heating up the polity and causing unwarranted tension in the country.

“It called on the DSS to do its job by immediately arresting and prosecuting all those involved in the plot as a matter of urgency.”

The forum congratulated its members who were re-elected for a second term in office.

It said while the last elections were not perfect, “we will take advantage of the learning points to strengthen our democracy and electoral processes.”

APC govs seek arrest of ‘unpatriotic elements’ plotting ‘evil’ interim govt

In a similar communiqué, governors elected on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) said the DSS should not waste time to go after those planning to install an interim government.

Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu, noted that after the Presidential, National Assembly, Gubernatorial and State Assembly elections in which all the major parties recorded varying successes and disappointments in different constituencies, some self-serving individuals were, unfortunately, seeking to sabotage the country’s democratic progress.

He said: “The Progressive Governors Forum note the press statement issued by the Department of State Service on the unfortunate, condemnable and treasonable conduct of some undemocratic elements who are agitating for an interim government. We condemn such agitation.

“It is commendable, however, that the Department of Security Service exposed the plot, and we call upon them to arrest and prosecute anyone involved.”

The forum added that after a democratic contest, parties are free to exercise the legal right of going to court.

The governors noted that it was widely reported that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Labour Party (LP) had chosen to go to the Presidential Election Tribunal to challenge the outcome of the presidential election, which was won by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu of APC.

They also said in all the 36 states of the country, tribunals have also been established to provide opportunities for those who participated in the various elections but felt dissatisfied to challenge the results.

The governors also urged all Nigerians to remain vigilant and resist any undemocratic conduct that is capable of undermining our democracy.

“Our country has done well in promoting democracy both in Nigeria and elsewhere in the African Continent, and, sadly, some unpatriotic elements are nursing the evil plot for the interim government, which will amount to subverting our national democratic progress,” The APC governors said.

The forum commended the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, who is also the Chairman of the Presidential Transitional Council for issuing a statement restating the federal government’s commitment towards a successful inauguration of a new President on May 29, 2023.

It called on all citizens to remain vigilant and continue to support Nigeria’s democratic development, which the campaign for the interim government was meant to truncate.

    It’s undemocratic, unacceptable, says IPAC

The umbrella body of registered political parties in the country, Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), also condemned the plot and dismissed interim government as “civilian coup, treason, absolutely undemocratic and unacceptable.”

National Chairman of IPAC, Mr. Sani Yabagi, said in a statement that the group rejected in its entirety any attempt to “scuttle, subvert and truncate the nation’s emerging democracy by reactionary and retrogressive forces.”

He added: “It is an attempt to overheat the polity, cause confusion, political upheavals, impasse and quagmire as was the case in the infamous annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election that necessitated the hasty set up of an interim government by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, which was headed by Chief Ernest Shonekan in August 1993.

“The court declared it illegal and the interim national government was overthrown by Gen. Sani Abacha in November same year,” he said.

Yabagi challenged the intelligence service to name the plotters, arrest and prosecute them in accordance with the law of the land, to serve as a deterrent to others who would resort to self-help to achieve their selfish political ambitions.

He reiterated the council’s call on all aggrieved political parties, candidates and supporters to eschew violence in all its ramifications and seek redress in court for perceived infractions and irregularities in the conduct of the 2023 general election.

“Council further urged the judiciary to dispense justice without fear or favour as the temple of justice and last hope of all aggrieved persons.

“All eyes are on the Judiciary to justify the confidence the people reposed in it by upholding the rule of law.

“That is the only way to assuage the anger in the land and maintain the sanctity of the ballot box,” Yabagi said.

He said that IPAC would continue to stand against anti-democratic forces in whatever guise while appreciating and commending those adding value to Nigeria’s nascent democracy.

Yabagi expressed the council’s appreciation to Prof. Nnenna Nwannaya-Oti, the INEC’s Returning Officer in the March 18 Governorship and House of Assembly elections in Abia State, for her exemplary conduct and impressive performance during the exercise.

He said the council’s commendation was predicated upon her ability to rise above pressure and deliver on her statutory mandate without fear or favour.

The IPAC Chairman expressed the hope that others could emulate her virtue of integrity, which according to him, is lacking among some public officers put in positions of trust.

    Ibo senior citizens too

The Ibo Senior Citizens Affairs Foundation (ISCAF) warned in Owerri that aborting democracy and installing an interim government would set Nigeria many years backwards.

President of the group and General Overseer, Friends of Jesus Global Mission (INC), the Right Reverend Maglorious Enyioha, said an interim government or military takeover would not solve any problem but rather trigger more problems in the country.

He wondered why some people could be calling for a military takeover or plotting to scuttle Nigeria’s democracy.

“I am neither calling for interim nor calling for military government because none will solve the problem facing the nation. Rather, I am calling for peace and justice because I believe a new Nigeria is possible,” he said.

He noted that there were aggrieved parties but advised that those who felt aggrieved should follow a judicial process to settle their grievances.

He said:”Our President, Muhammadu Buhari, should not leave everything for the incoming administration of the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. He should summon a meeting of senior citizens, the elders, not politicians because the politicians have failed us. And I know that when they come together, God will put words into their mouths that will bring about understanding that would move Nigeria forward.

“We are also calling on our youths not to enter into demonstration or action that will cause breach of peace in our land. But unfortunately, the more we try to caution the youths and make peace, the more they push them to the walls, they molest them, kill them and destroy their properties. That is why we are asking the president, president-elect and world leaders to intervene and restore peace in the country.

“Igbo are peace loving people and that’s why anywhere you find them they are relaxed and helping to build the environment.”

On Nnamdi Kanu, the President of ISCAF appealed to President Buhari, for the sake of peace, to release the IPOB leader being detained in DSS custody and set free other illegally detained persons across the country.

NANS vows to resist interim govt

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) dismissed the agitation as devilish and uncalled for.

Vice President of the association, Akinteye Afeez, said nothing should stop the inauguration of the President-Elect and his team as planned.

Afeez, in a statement, said the students’ body saw the agitation as nothing more than a sham and unworkable

He said: “We consider this report from the DSS as the joke of the millennium. It is laughable in all ramifications that an election was organised by INEC and the result of the presidential election produced a President-Elect and the winner was announced by the same body – INEC that conducted the election, then a group of sycophants would come together to plan to shortchange the fragile peace of the nation for their selfish interests.

“This is totally unacceptable to all and sundry. The entire Nigerian students would go against this with every power within and without. Gone is the era of June 12, 1993 that Nigeria was still in a dark age and most Nigerians didn’t know their rights and privileges as citizens.

“Gone is such era of militarization, affront and impunity, where someone or a group of few people can just come up with plans and actualise them against the will of the people.

“Gone is the era where the Nigerian students and youth would sit and watch some people decide for us to our detriment as citizens and as a nation. We are all wiser now. This will not work.

“As a matter of urgency, I hereby call upon the Nigerian students, the Nigerian youth and the entire citizens of Nigeria to be ready to resist every form of oppression or manipulation that would send Nigeria backwards in the comity of nations and any installation that would tamper with the peace and tranquility that Nigeria has been enjoying after the heat of the just concluded elections.

“I strongly advise that any candidate or any political party who is not satisfied with the outcome of the presidential election should seek redress in the court of law and desist from inciting violence of any form in any way so that Nigeria can move forward.”

Call for interim government invitation to anarch, Olanipekun warns

The immediate past Chairman of the Body of Benchers (BOB), Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), in his own reaction yesterday, warned that Nigeria risked extinction if those behind the call for interim national government did  not desist from doing so on time.

Olanipekun described as an aberration and an invitation to anarchy, the call for interim government in a democracy where elections have just been held and certificates of return issued to winners.

The senior lawyer spoke at a public function organised in his honour by the Body of Benchers to mark the end of his tenure as the Chairman of the prestigious organisation.

He said: “It is unconstitutional. To me, it comes from the pit of hell. Calling for interim national government? Where did you get it from? How do you compartmentalise it? How do you accommodate it within a constitutional democracy? I as a lawyer, I don’t know the jurisprudence that will accommodate it.

“Let’s face it: whenever there is election anywhere in the world, there is bound to be disagreement. But if for every disagreement you say let us disband the system; that does not make sense. You can’t throw away the baby with the bath water. It is never done.”

Citing cases from developed countries where election outcomes have been disputed, Olanipekun urged those aggrieved to explore the opportunities provided by the Constitution and the statue having gone to court

He recalled the unpleasant experience Nigeria went through under the last interim government headed by the  late Chief Ernest Shonekan.

He said: “I am not saying all is well. In every institution created by God for man, there would be minuses. You don’t have 100 per cent anywhere. I am not saying there is no room for improvement. But don’t let us call for anarchy. No one is going to benefit from it; not even those calling for it.

“I want to plead with those calling for interim national government to cease fire. Let them introspect. Let them think of the present and the future. Let them think of what will be the outcome.

“The outcome is going to be calamitous. It is going to be an ill wind and it is not going to do anybody any good. It will blow all of us into the Atlantic,” he said.

On a retrospective assessment of his tenure, Olanipekun said he felt fulfilled for what God had done through him for the Law profession during his as the Chairman of the BOB.

Olanipekun, who noted that the BOB is peopled by the best in the legal profession in the country, thanked members of the body for their unflinching support during his tenure.

He added: “What is life about? We all pray that we end well. I started well a year ago as the Chairman, Body of Benchers, and I have ended well…I am at peace with myself and I pray that God will be at peace with me.”

Eminent Nigerians who were at the event, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola; Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, Justice Mary Odili (who stepped in as the new BOB Chairman) and many senior lawyers, spoke glowinglyabout Olanipekun.

Justice Ariwoola said it is impossible to doubt the sterling contributions that Olanipekun has made to the development of the legal profession in the country and beyond.

Commending him for his impact while in office, the CJN noted that “great men, like Olanipekun, naturally have their tentacles spread across the path of unimaginable generations of beneficiaries of his magnanimous disposition.”

He added: “The respected SAN has been bestriding the Nigerian legal landscape, with iconic academic discernment for over four decades now.

“He is one lawyer that has latched on our memory an enviable degree of intellectual eminence and legal finesse that encompass all spheres of philosophy and methodical reasoning.

“He is a very unique and nationalistic Nigerian with a radical posture of justice and the rule of law…he is very straight and consciously principled in disposition.

“Even though he is elitist and dignified in carriage, he still relates exceptionally well with the down trodden, as his entire life is totally devoid of duplicity, undue arrogance and elitism…he is, by all standards, a rare gem and an unblemished specimen.”

Justice Odili testified that Olanipekun discharged his duties without blemish while he headed the BOB, and promised to build on his achievements.

Governor Oyebanji described Olanipekun as a great philanthropist, an inspiration and a pride to Ekiti State.

Northern Elders to party leaders: Restrain spokespersons from rude language

Worried by alleged intemperate tone of statements by some members of the political class, the   Northern Elders Forum (NEF) yesterday advised party leaders to retrain their spokespersons from heating up the polity with uncouth language and exchanges on social media and traditional media.

NEF also appealed to Nigerians to allow the judiciary to perform its responsibility under a calm and peaceful atmosphere.

Director, Publicity and Advocacy of NEF, Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed said: “At any rate, Nigerians should be reminded that our country must survive these elections and address the conduct of elections that have improved standards of quality as well as strengthen the foundations of our peaceful co-existence.

“Northern Elders Forum has sustained its decision to exercise responsible vigilance over the 2023 elections, and encourage emergence of leaders under credible, free and fair elections and a peaceful transition from the current administration to the next one.

“It has followed the conduct of the elections, some of which are still being planned or conducted.

“The Forum welcomes the decision of contestants who feel the elections had not met legal thresholds of acceptability to seek for adjudication over its credibility and settle other constitutional issues related to it.

“It is also concerned that leaders are not exercising enough responsibility to encourage respect for the judicial process, a key element of the electoral process, forum.”

Plot to install interim government real, says DSS

The DSS in its Wednesday statement said the interim government plotters during ”their many meetings, have weighed various options, which include, among others, to sponsor endless violent mass protests in major cities to warrant a declaration of State of Emergency.

It said it also “supports the Presidential Transition Council and such other related bodies in the States. It will collaborate with them and sister security and law enforcement agencies to ensure seamless inaugurations come 29th May, 2023.”

It warned “those organising to thwart democracy in the country to retract from their devious schemes and orchestrations.”

Govs condemn call for interim government

Governors of the nation’s 36 States have spoken in unison against the call by some elements for the imposition of an interim national government.

The Governors, under the aegis of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), faulted the decision by the Department of State Services (DSS) to only issue statement but fail to arrest proponents of interim government.

It tasked the DSS to urgently apprehend and prosecute those behind the unconstitutional and aberrant proposition.

Their position is contained in a communiqué at the end of a meeting of the NGF held on March 29.

The communique, signed by the forum’s Chairman, Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, was made available on Friday by the NGF secretariat.

It reads: “The e forum deliberated extensively on the alleged plot by some unscrupulous elements to

install an interim government, as contained in the recent statement issued by the Department for State Services (DSS).

The governors who also deliberates on the refund of backlog of Stamp Duties due to State Governments, restated their commitment to engaging with all stakeholders and exploring all legal channels available to it in ensuring that monies which ought to have since been used for development projects are duly refunded to the states.

The forum added: “On the Implementation of the National Development Plan (2021-2025), the Forum nominated six Governors to represent the six geopolitical zones of the country in the National Steering Committee: North Central – Governor of Kwara State, North East – Governor of Bauchi State, North West – Governor of Zamfara State,

South South – Governor of Edo State, South East – Governor of Anambra State and South West – Governor of Ekiti State.

“The forum received a briefing on the cancellation of the proposed privatization of five National Integrated Power Projects (NIPPs) by National Council on Privatization

(NCP) and the withdrawal of the matter at the Federal High Court between the 36 states of the Federation vs the Federal Government of Nigeria.

“It was instituted to halt the process to enable stakeholders address the concerns by states and Local Governments who collectively own a joint stake of 53percent in the Niger Delta Power Holding Company (NDPHC).

“Members applauded this move by the NCP which appears to have taken into consideration the recommendation of the S states to halt the process due to ill-timing amongst other reasons.

“The forum is set to conduct its flagship induction programme for its newly elected and re- elected governors.

“This event, which will bring together newly elected, re-elected, past governors, national and international leaders, captains of industries and development partners, is scheduled to hold from 14th -17th May 2023.

“It is designed to build the capacity of Governors to establish, organize, manage, and set agenda/priorities using best practices whilst leveraging the tools of their trade – people, processes, programmes and public opinion – for greater and more effective governance.

“The second part of the Induction programme will hold from 17th -19th May, 2023 and will focus on the Governors’ Spouses Summit designed to strategize on how the activities of the Governors’ spouses can best complement the roles of the Governors in promoting good governance at the sub-national level and help the spouses better understand the processes of transitioning to their new roles as first ladies.”
