  • Illicit drugs: Marwa calls for national response, support for alternative development

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Brig Gen Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd), has called for a strong national response and sustained support for the alternative development programme recently initiated to curb illicit cannabis cultivation, uplift rural communities, and strengthen national security.

Marwa spoke at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday to drum up support for the first in Africa drug control initiative, a pilot scheme that was launched in three cannabis growing communities in Ondo state last week.

While explaining the alternative development strategy of drug control, the NDLEA boss said the concept goes far beyond crop substitution, stressing that, “Its wider benefits include: strengthening rural economies through value-chain development; reducing the burden on law enforcement and the justice system; promoting peace and social cohesion in previously crime-prone areas; supporting national food production and agricultural diversification; improving Nigeria’s international standing in global drug control and development cooperation.”

According to him, “This approach represents a win-win solution—for communities, for government, and for national security. The successful take-off of the pilot scheme in Ilu Abo, Ifon, and Eleyewo in Ondo state last week clearly demonstrates that alternative development works when communities are engaged, supported, and empowered.

“We therefore call for a strong national response and sustained support from all stakeholders across all layers of government, traditional rulers and community leaders, development partners and donor agencies, the private sector and agricultural value-chain actors, as well as civil society organisations and the media.”

He also urged communities across the country, particularly those affected by illicit drug cultivation, to embrace the model and work with the NDLEA in building lawful, productive, and secure livelihoods.

“Let me reiterate that the alternative development programme is not just a drug control initiative; it is a people-centred development intervention designed to uplift communities, strengthen national security, and secure Nigeria’s future.”

He assured that the Agency “remains fully committed to expanding this programme nationwide, in partnership with all stakeholders, as we collectively build a safer, healthier, and more prosperous Nigeria in alignment with the renewed hope agenda of the President Tinubu administration.”

Speaking on the successful flag-off of the scheme in Ondo state, Marwa said, “One of the most encouraging outcomes of this pilot project has been the overwhelming acceptance and support expressed by the host communities and their traditional and community leaders. They have openly stated that this programme has renewed their hope in Nigeria and restored their confidence in the government. They recognize that Alternative Development offers a dignified and lawful source of income for farmers; reduction in poverty and vulnerability, especially among rural households; improved food security through the introduction of viable alternative crops; enhanced community stability and safety, as illicit drug cultivation often fuels criminal networks and insecurity.”

He noted that replacing cannabis cultivation with sustainable agricultural and economic opportunities, the programme directly tackles the root causes of drug production rather than merely treating the symptoms.

The NDLEA boss said the dire reality of illicit cannabis cultivation and use in Nigeria made the Agency to look beyond law enforcement and consider a United Nations-endorsed alternative to solving the cannabis conundrum.

“The evidence-based comprehensive data on drug use in Nigeria exposes a bleak and deeply troubling reality. According to the 2018 National Drug Use Survey, conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics with technical support from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), an estimated 14.4 per cent of Nigerians aged 15–64 years — or roughly 14.3 million people — reported using at least one psychoactive substance in the past year, a figure that is more than twice the global prevalence of drug use. Cannabis stands starkly at the centre of this crisis, dominating both patterns of consumption and the illicit cultivation landscape.”

He further disclosed, “Cannabis is not a marginal issue in Nigeria – it is the most frequently used and widely available illicit drug in the country. An estimated 10.6 million adults – more than one in every ten Nigerians in the prime of life – reported using cannabis in the past year, far outstripping the use of other drugs. The severity of the problem extends beyond consumption into widespread cultivation and organized production. Field assessments focusing on high-risk areas in the South West reveal that nearly 8,900 hectares of land are under cannabis cultivation, often hidden deep within forests and remote regions. These illicit farms are clustered and interconnected, hinting at organized networks that not only supply domestic demand but also facilitate trafficking beyond Nigeria’s borders.”

Painting a grim picture of the challenge, Marwa said, “The social and public health implications are stark. With youth and adults alike turning to habitual cannabis use often initiated in late adolescence, the nation faces the threat of long-term health consequences, increased dependency, and cascading social harms, including lost productivity, crime, and the burden on overstretched healthcare systems. More revealing is the fact that out of a total of 15 million kilograms of assorted illicit drugs seized by NDLEA in the past five years, over 75 percent of them are cannabis. Just imagine the harm that quantity would have done to our youths, public health, and national security.”

He, however, expressed confidence that the alternative development initiative will reverse the trend if given a strong national response and sustained support because it’s fully aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

He commended national stakeholders and international partners who have shown support for the initiative.

“This pilot project was flagged off with the invaluable support of several global institutions and partners, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC); the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Global Partnership on Drug Policies and Development (GPDPD), Berlin, Germany; Mae Fah Luang Foundation under Royal Patronage (MFLF), Bangkok, Thailand; as well as support from friendly countries and development partners committed to sustainable livelihoods and community resilience, including friends and partners who participated virtually from Nigeria, Ghana, South Africa, Germany, Thailand, Peru, Colombia, Brazil, Mexico, Netherlands, Myanmar, Bhutan, Laos, Afghanistan, Iran, and Guatemala. Also significant was the presence and support of Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Ayedatiwa, and the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyariwho was ably represented by the Regional Director Southwest, Mrs. Alao Temitayo,” he said.

Kaduna community cries out over killings, kidnappings of kinsmen

    • …says 59 in bandits’ captivity since Oct 2025

Akurmi community in Lere Local Government Area of Kaduna State has raised a desperate alarm over sustained killings and kidnappings by bandits, lamenting that 59 of its people have remained in captivity since October 2025.

Leaders of the community said no fewer than 12 residents were killed while dozens were abducted in a string of attacks that have left villages deserted, farmlands abandoned, and families traumatised.

At a press conference in Kaduna, the Akurmi Development Association (AKURDA) painted a grim picture of life under siege, saying the wave of violence across their settlements in the last four months has pushed the people to the brink.

AKURDA President, Yakubu J. Maigamo, who addressed journalists, questioned the seeming neglect of the community in the face of repeated attacks.

“Are we still part of Nigeria? Or have Akurmi lives become disposable?” he asked.

Maigamo said what used to be thriving ancestral farmlands have now turned into “graveyards and forests of fear,” as gunmen invade villages at will, killing men and whisking away women and children.

He said the attacks have been systematic and devastating, affecting several communities across Lere and neighbouring local governments.

He cited Karku-Ningi in Kauru LGA, where four persons were killed and nine kidnapped during an October 2025 raid.

He also listed Gidan-Waya, Jan-Tsauni, and Mai-Yamma in Lere LGA, where another four people were killed and 13 abducted in November 2025.

According to him, more abductions and killings were recorded in Majagada, Gurza, Garun-Kurama, and Biman-Kurama communities within the period under review.

Maigamo disclosed that many of those abducted since October last year are still in captivity, with families forced to sell off harvested grains meant to sustain them through the year to pay ransoms.

He described the bandits as operating with “absolute impunity,” alleging that the attackers strike repeatedly without resistance or consequence.

While acknowledging efforts by the Federal Government and the Kaduna State Government to address insecurity, the community leader said the response has been grossly insufficient to stem the tide of attacks on Akurmi settlements.

He said the continued silence and slow response from authorities have emboldened the attackers and deepened the people’s sense of abandonment.

The association issued a direct appeal to Governor Uba Sani to order an immediate and permanent deployment of security personnel to the Akurmi communities to prevent further attacks.

It also demanded a coordinated, high-level intelligence operation aimed specifically at rescuing all abductees still in captivity.

Maigamo further called for a thorough investigation, arrest, and prosecution of those behind the attacks, as well as any collaborators aiding the criminals.

“Justice cannot wait. Safety cannot be delayed,” he said.

“Our commitment to peace must not be mistaken for a willingness to perish in silence. An injury to one is an injury to all.”

The community appealed to civil society organisations, humanitarian groups, and the international community to amplify their cry for help before more lives are lost.

They warned that continued inaction could lead to further bloodshed and displacement across the area.

“The blood of the slain cries out for justice,” Maigamo said, urging urgent intervention to save the remaining captives and restore normalcy to Akurmi land.

  • Plateau indigenes abroad task Gov Mutfwang on security, conducive investment climate

Plateau indigenes abroad task Gov Mutfwang on security, conducive investment climate

Indigenes of Plateau State resident outside the country have tasked the governor, Caleb Mutfwang, to ensure policy consistency and create an enabling investment environment for the state’s diaspora population.

The Plateau indigenes under the auspices of the Plateau State Association in the United States (PSA-USA) spoke during a meeting with the governor by the group’s National Executive Committee (EXCO) members, led by Dr. Barth Shepkong.

According to a statement on Tuesday, a member of the group, at the meeting held in Washington, D.C., highlighted the vast contribution and potential of the Plateau diaspora beyond remittances.

They noted that other benefits include human capital, professional expertise, global networks, and investment capacity across critical sectors such as healthcare, education, finance, technology, entrepreneurship, and peacebuilding.

The members noted that for the state to take advantage of the many potentials of its diaspora population, it must ensure confidence in governance, policy consistency, and an enabling investment and business-friendly environment.

They stressed the need for investor confidence, with particular emphasis on the importance of the contract’s integrity and effective dispute-resolution mechanisms.

The indigenes added, “PSA-USA shared insights from diaspora investors, noting that reliability and consistency in honouring agreements remain key drivers of sustained investment interest.”

They commended the governor for his good works so far and his approach to governance, which promotes openness and inclusive leadership.

The association particularly acknowledged the governor’s consistent willingness to engage the Plateau diaspora in dialogue—an approach PSA-USA described as “encouraging and worthy of commendation.”

Members noted that this openness has helped strengthen trust and reaffirm the place of the diaspora as stakeholders in the state’s development journey.

According to PSA-USA, sustained and consultative engagement of this nature sends a strong signal of inclusion and shared responsibility, and lays a solid foundation for meaningful collaboration between government and the diaspora community.

The delegation emphasised that Plateau State is at a critical juncture where diaspora engagement must continue to evolve from goodwill to structured, transparent, and institutional collaboration.

The group stressed that clarity of process, continuity of engagement, and mutual accountability are essential to converting diaspora goodwill into long-term development outcomes.

PSA-USA also briefed the governor on its recent engagements with the United States Congress and other international stakeholders concerning developments in Plateau State.

The association clarified that these engagements were undertaken responsibly and in support of peacebuilding efforts, to ensure accurate representation of Plateau State’s realities within international policy circles.

It reiterated its support for the establishment of a Plateau State Diaspora Commission, recalling that the proposal received broad endorsement during the association’s 20th Anniversary celebration attended by the Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly.

The association expressed confidence that such a framework would further institutionalise diaspora engagement and enhance coordination.

PSA-USA also briefed the Governor on the R64 Diaspora Campaign Fund, a non-partisan initiative aligned with Plateau State’s 64 wards and designed to support grassroots development efforts in complement to government programmes.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to continued partnership with the Plateau State Government, noting that the Governor’s open, consultative, and inclusive approach to diaspora engagement provides a strong foundation for sustained collaboration, shared responsibility, and long-term development

In his response, Governor Mutfwang expressed appreciation for the constructive role PSA-USA has continued to play in advancing the interests and development of Plateau State.

He acknowledged the association’s advocacy, development initiatives, and commitment to peace, describing the Plateau diaspora as an important partner in the state’s progress.

The governor outlined his administration’s efforts to stabilise the state, strengthen institutions, and foster an enabling environment for development and investment.

He reaffirmed his readiness to work closely with the diaspora and emphasised that inclusive engagement remains central to his vision for a peaceful, united, and prosperous Plateau State.

Governor Mutfwang also appealed to Plateau indigenes—both at home and abroad—to eschew tribal, ethnic, and regional sentiments, stressing that unity and mutual understanding are indispensable to lasting peace and sustainable development.

On the recent political developments, the governor explained that his decision to move from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was not driven by partisan considerations, but by what he described as a strategic decision taken in the broader interest of Plateau State and its long-term stability.

Mutfwang called on all Plateau indigenes to work collectively toward building a peaceful, inclusive, and prosperous state that all citizens can be proud of.

  • Suspension: Akpoti-Uduaghan urges Supreme Court to quash Akpabio’s appeal

Suspension: Akpoti-Uduaghan urges Supreme Court to quash Akpabio’s appeal

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has filed a counter-affidavit at the Supreme Court seeking to quash an appeal filed by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The counter-affidavit was deposed to by a Senior Legislative Aide to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and filed in response to Senator Akpabio’s Motion on Notice dated January 21, 2026.

The counter appeal is in opposition to an appeal instituted by the President of the Senate arising from proceedings at the Court of Appeal.

Akpoti-Uduaghan urged the apex court to dismiss the application in its entirety, arguing that it discloses no prima facie good cause and constitutes an abuse of court process.

According to the counter-affidavit, the Court of Appeal had already concluded hearing in the substantive appeal on November 28, 2025, and reserved the matter for judgment.

The respondents contended that approaching the Supreme Court at this stage amounts to an attempt to interfere with an appellate process that has reached an advanced stage and is awaiting final determination.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan alleged that Senator Akpabio was afforded ample opportunity to present his case before the Court of Appeal in strict compliance with the Rules of Court.

She insisted that her brief of argument was properly filed before the lower court and procedurally compliant, and therefore was never formally challenged during the proceedings.

According to her, central to the dispute is an alleged breach of the Court of Appeal Rules, 2021, which prescribe a maximum of 35 pages for briefs of argument.

She contended that while the legal teams representing her, the Clerk to the National Assembly, and another respondent complied with the page limit, the Senate President filed a brief running well beyond the prescribed limit.

She further alleged that the appellant failed to regularise the defect within the timeframe allowed by the Rules.

She said, consequently, the Court of Appeal declined to admit the over-length brief and proceeded to hear the appeal based on the valid and properly filed processes before it.

On the substantive legal issues, she argued that the grounds of appeal relied upon by Akpabio raised issues of mixed law and fact.

She insisted that prior leave of court was mandatory before such grounds could be competently filed and maintained that no such leave was sought or obtained, rendering the appeal incompetent ab initio.

The counter-affidavit also addressed complaints relating to adjournment and fair hearing, maintaining that the grant or refusal of an adjournment lies within the discretionary powers of the court.

She submitted that the Court of Appeal exercised its discretion judicially and judiciously and that the appellant was not denied a fair hearing at any stage of the proceedings.

Urging the Supreme Court to dismiss the application, Akpoti-Uduaghan described the appeal as an attempt to stall or frustrate the delivery of judgment by the Court of Appeal.

Police deploy troops, Mopol to Cross River community as chieftaincy crisis claims lives

    …villagers flee, houses burnt

The Nigeria Police Force in Cross River State has deployed troops and Mobile Police personnel to Odot Uyi community in Odukpani Local Government Area following an escalation of a chieftaincy crisis that has led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

Police sources confirmed that the crisis, which intensified on February 2, 2026, resulted in the killing of two persons and the burning of houses in the community. The violence is linked to a long-running dispute over the position of Village Head of Odot Uyi.

According to the sources, the Village Head’s residence was set ablaze during the unrest, with properties valued at millions of naira destroyed.

Officers from the Odukpani Division, alongside a tactical police team and Mobile Police personnel, were immediately deployed to restore order.

On arrival, the police reportedly found the community deserted, with residents having fled, leaving only livestock behind. However, during a combing operation of the village and its surroundings, Chief Ntia Okon Bassey, 62, the Village Head-elect, was arrested. He had been accused by some villagers of fraudulent dealings involving community funds.

Those named include Edem Ekpo Nyong, 30, and Ekpo Ekpo Nyong, 26, who were reportedly murdered by one Okon Usanga, described as a factional leader opposed to the Village Head. Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah Akata, said the command was aware of the development. He disclosed that two suspects had been arrested, while another key suspect, identified as the Village Head, was still on the run.

Tinubu’s foreign travels, meetings strengthening Nigeria’s global partnerships – Yilwatda

The All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, says President Bola Tinubu’s foreign travels and meetings with global leaders have strengthened Nigeria’s global partnerships.

Yilwatda stated this in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Mr Abimbola Tooki, on Tuesday in Abuja.

He commended Tinubu for his strategic international engagements and measurable gains, noting that through the engagements, Nigeria had recorded sustained diplomatic and economic outreach.

“Tinubu’s foreign travels and meetings with global leaders are not ceremonial but purposeful actions that had strengthened Nigeria’s global partnerships and attracted significant foreign investments into the country.

“Mr President’s engagements with strategic global partners underscore his unwavering commitment to advancing Nigeria’s economic interests.

“These visits have helped reposition our country on the world stage, yielding tangible benefits that will support long-term prosperity,” he said.

Yilwatda further stated that since assuming office in May 2023, the president had undertaken series of international visits to key regions, including Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and America.

He said that Tinubu had engaged leaders and investors in countries, such as the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, China, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Brazil and others.

Yilwatda added that the missions had been focused on economic cooperation, trade expansion and enhanced strategic partnerships.

He noted that Nigeria had already secured over 50 billion dollars in foreign direct investment (FDI) commitments through Tinubu’s diplomatic drive.

This, the APC national chairmanship said, was especially with major companies and sectors committing to investments that spanned energy, manufacturing, logistics, agriculture, technology and infrastructure.

“These are not promises on paper. These commitments represent real capital flows, job creation opportunities and technology transfers that strengthen our economy,” he said.

Yilwatda applauded Tinubu for negotiating agreements that prioritised Nigeria’s growth and sustainable development.

He recalled recent diplomatic achievements, such as the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with the United Arab Emirates, designed to deepen trade, investment and cooperation across critical sectors, including energy and agriculture.

The APC national chairman said that those describing Tinubu’s international travels as overdone or unnecessary, were short-sighted and lacked appreciation for the broader reform trajectory which the administration had championed.

“Those who focus on the cost without recognising the returns are missing the bigger picture. Nigeria’s reform programme under President Tinubu is bold, strategic and necessary.

“We urge all Nigerians to support these efforts with patience, knowing that the dividends will be felt across the economy,” he said.

Yilwatda emphasised that Tinubu’s capacity to follow through on reforms, from economic policy shifts to institutional strengthening, demonstrated a deep commitment to transforming the Nigerian economy and enhancing living standards for citizens.

According to him, the president has shown both the vision and determination to see through the reforms the country needs.

“Now is not the time for cynicism but for unity and constructive support, as these diplomatic and economic efforts begin to translate into tangible improvements in people’s lives,” Yilwatda said.

He assured that APC remained committed to amplifying the positive impacts of Nigeria’s international engagements and ensuring that global partnerships contributed directly to national growth, job creation and shared prosperity.
