  • Akpabio tells 10th Senate to fast-track legislative agenda as plenary resumes

Akpabio tells 10th Senate to fast-track legislative agenda as plenary resumes

…lauds military collaboration between Nigeria, United States

…adjourns plenary in honour of Senator Akwashiki

President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has charged members of the 10th National Assembly to approach the remaining months of their tenure with urgency, discipline and a strong sense of legacy, declaring that the Senate has entered the “final stretch” of its legislative journey.

Akpabio gave the charge on Tuesday in Abuja while delivering his welcome address at the first plenary sitting of the Senate in 2026, following the Christmas and New Year recess.

He urged senators to convert feedback gathered from their constituencies during the break into meaningful legislation and effective oversight actions that directly address the needs of Nigerians.

The Senate President noted that despite the recess, the nation continued to face economic pressures, security concerns and social challenges, stressing that lawmakers must now respond with renewed commitment and focus.

However, the resumption of plenary was marked by solemnity as the Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of late Senator Godiya Akwashiki (SDP–Nasarawa North), who died on December 31, 2025. Akwashiki has since been laid to rest.

Describing the late lawmaker as a diligent and humble public servant, Akpabio said his contributions to the Senate and the country would be deeply missed.

He extended condolences to the family of the deceased, his constituents and the people of Nasarawa State, while leading senators in paying tribute to his memory.

On national security, Akpabio commended the ongoing military collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in the fight against terrorism, noting that such partnerships were critical to restoring peace and stability.

He also sympathised with families affected by insecurity across the country, describing security as a matter of lives, homes and futures.

Akpabio expressed concern over a recent United Nations warning that up to 35 million Nigerians could face hunger this year, describing the figure as alarming and unacceptable.

According to him, “The development calls for urgent legislative action, stronger oversight and collaboration with relevant stakeholders to boost food security and protect vulnerable citizens.

As political activities gradually build up nationwide, Akpabio appealed to political parties and actors to conduct themselves with civility, conscience and patriotism, warning that Nigeria’s unity and stability must not be sacrificed on the altar of ambition.

He also urged Nigerians not to forget citizens still held in captivity by criminal groups, describing their continued detention as a national wound that must be healed.

Encouraging continued support for the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Programme, Akpabio said perseverance, cooperation and shared sacrifice remained key to achieving a more secure and productive Nigeria.

Turning to the work of the Senate, Akpabio said with less than one year and five months left in the current legislative cycle, the chamber had moved beyond settling in and must now focus on delivery.

“This is the final stretch of the marathon,” he said. “It is the phase that separates participation from performance.”

He stressed that the period must be reform-driven, with priority given to bills and motions that promote economic growth, strengthen institutions, secure lives and property, and restore confidence in governance.

Akpabio cautioned against legislative clutter, insisting that history would judge the Senate not by the volume of laws passed but by their impact and value to Nigerians.

He said the Senate would also focus on completing pending legislative work and leaving behind a functional, principled and orderly institution.

On the 2026 budget, the Senate President said the chamber would give it rigorous scrutiny to ensure responsible passage and faithful implementation, adding that cooperation with the Executive, guided by mutual respect and constitutional responsibility, would remain central to national progress.

“We are here for Nigerians,” Akpabio declared. “We are their ears to hear their cries, their eyes to see their realities, and their legislative voice to protect their rights.”

He urged senators to rise to the moment, saying the nation and history were watching.

“Let it be said that when the Tenth Senate reached the final stretch, it did not slow down or leave the work unfinished,” he said, calling on lawmakers to “finish strong” for the sake of Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the chairman of the APC in the North West and former House of Representatives member, Hon. Garba Datti Muhammad, said the governor’s defection underscores his commitment to progressive governance, noting that the move has further strengthened the momentum of the party nationwide.

He said Governor Yusuf’s decision reflects his alignment with progressive ideals and the growing influence of the APC across the country.

“This particular action has once again brought Kano into the map of progressive politics that it has been known for in decades. With the massive transformation and innovative leadership of the APC administration at the centre, it is only natural that every well-meaning leader at the sub-national level will want to be on board and identify with such development.

  • Atiku’s son hails Tinubu’s economic policies, backs re-election

Atiku’s son hails Tinubu’s economic policies, backs re-election

Abba Atiku Abubakar, son of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has attributed his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s re-election bid to what he described as the administration’s innovative and business-friendly economic policies.

He said President Tinubu’s economic initiatives are more favourable to businesses than those of previous administrations, adding that the reforms have reshaped his political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abba made the remarks during a solidarity visit to the leadership of the City Boy Movement (CBM) in Abuja on Monday evening, where he led members of the Haske Atiku Organisation, now rebranded as the Haske Tinubu Organisation.

He recalled that he formally defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on January 15, collecting his membership card at Gwadabwa Ward in Yola North Local Government Area of Adamawa State, where he publicly pledged support for Tinubu’s second-term ambition.

According to him, his decision to back the president was driven by admiration for the economic policies introduced since 2023, which he believes are positioning the country for stronger private-sector growth and investment.

According to him, “This administration has introduced policies that have every Nigerian in mind. If anyone says this government is not doing well, I will tell them they are lying,” he said. “I believe that if given another term, the government will do even more because it is focused.”

He explained that his long-standing experience in business has given him a clear perspective on economic governance in Nigeria.

“Since the return of democratic rule in 1999, I have been in business, and I am still in business today. The economic policies of Mr. President are favourable—not just to businesses, but to Nigerians in general, who are already benefiting from these reforms,” he stated.

He also explained that his decision to join the APC and align with the City Boy Movement was motivated by his passion for the Tinubu-led administration and his desire to serve.

“My joining the APC and the City Boy Movement is based on my belief in this administration. I also intend to use this platform to serve the people of Adamawa at the National Assembly level. Mr. President has made youth inclusion in politics a reality,” Abubakar added.

The Director General of the City Boy Movement, Mr. Oluwatosin Shoga reaffirmed President Tinubu’s commitment to youth participation in governance and leadership.

He noted that one of CBM’s core strategic mandates is to ensure that young Nigerians are deliberately positioned for leadership roles while encouraging greater youth involvement in the political process.

Abba’s delegation was received by the Director General of CBM, Mr. Shoga, and the National Coordinator, Mr. Favour Abayomi.

  • Tinubu’s Türkiye visit strategic, not routine — Bwala

Tinubu’s Türkiye visit strategic, not routine — Bwala

The Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication, Daniel Bwala, has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to Türkiye as a strategic and highly consequential engagement, dismissing suggestions that it is a routine foreign trip.

Speaking with journalists on the sidelines of the visit, Bwala said the trip was at the invitation of the Turkish government, a gesture he said underscores Nigeria’s growing diplomatic influence under President Tinubu’s leadership.

According to him, President Tinubu’s stature as a former leader of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and Nigeria’s strategic importance on the African continent shaped the level of reception and expectations surrounding the visit.

“This is not just another trip. It is a strategic visit, first because it is by invitation of the Turkish government. The President of Nigeria is a person of influence in Africa, and Nigeria itself plays a strong role on the continent. With the breakthroughs we are recording in the economy, security and governance, this visit carries significant weight,” Bwala said.

Bwala explained that the state visit would formally begin with a series of engagements from Tuesday, during which Nigeria and Türkiye would explore areas of mutual interest, particularly in defence, security and economic cooperation.

He disclosed that key Ministers accompanying the President are scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with their Turkish counterparts, aimed at strengthening collaboration across critical sectors.

The presidential aide also highlighted President Tinubu’s international standing, noting that his leadership style has helped to strengthen Nigeria’s diplomatic relations globally, including renewed engagement with major partners such as the United States, following earlier diplomatic challenges.

He cited the recently concluded diplomatic engagements with the United Arab Emirates as evidence of Nigeria’s renewed momentum on the global stage, adding that the Türkiye visit builds on those gains.

Bwala further emphasised Türkiye’s historical strengths in defence and security, particularly its capacity to manufacture advanced military hardware relevant to Nigeria’s security needs, while noting areas where Nigeria has also provided support to Türkiye over the years.

Describing the visit as “a meeting of shared interests,” Bwala said both countries stand to benefit, adding that Turkish officials and citizens have shown excitement and optimism since President Tinubu’s arrival.

He assured that details of specific agreements and deliverables from the talks would be communicated at the conclusion of the visit, which he said is expected to further consolidate Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives, deepen defence cooperation and unlock new economic opportunities in line with the administration’s agenda.
