Crowd roars, mandate sealed as Tinubu, Otu get 2027 green light

    By Linus Obogo

In a scene akin to a triumphant homecoming, the U.J. Esuene Stadium in Calabar became the epicentre of electrifying unity on Wednesday, as the Cross River Southern Consultative Forum marshalled what many now call the “Mother of All Endorsements” — a grand rally teeming with thousands of fervent supporters from the nooks and crannies of the state, united in one purpose: the emphatic endorsement of Governor Bassey Edet Otu and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term come 2027.

Bedecked in party colours and pulsating with rhythmic drumming and ululations, the stadium transformed into a living canvas of joy and conviction. Against this backdrop of soaring hope, Governor Otu mounted the podium with the grace of a statesman and the humility of a servant-leader. His voice, both steady and stirring, resonated across the field as he offered thanks for the people’s unwavering loyalty. “I am humbled by this overwhelming show of love,” he said, his words laden with gratitude. “This is not just about politics; it is an affirmation of the silent revolution we are championing — a people-first governance rooted in economic rebirth, infrastructural renewal, and the dignity of labour.”

With the cadence of a visionary and the clarity of purpose, the governor elaborated on his economic blueprint, painting a picture of a Cross River rising anew — where young people are not just employed but empowered, where investors knock with confidence, and where the fertile soils of agriculture meet the lifeblood of innovation. “Our productivity index is rising. Investors are knocking. Tourism is awakening. With the Bakassi Deep Seaport and the smart city projects underway, Cross River is on the march to sustainable prosperity,” Otu declared, prompting a wave of jubilant cheers.

The governor’s address was not merely celebratory — it was deeply human. He spoke of peace reclaimed and hope restored, highlighting the dismantling of over 16 miscreant camps and the ongoing amnesty and reintegration programme designed to offer second chances. “We do not build with bricks alone, but with hearts and futures,” he said with palpable emotion. “Peace is returning. Dignity is being restored. Our people are being rearmed with purpose.” In this, Governor Otu reasserted a philosophy of governance steeped in compassion and practical deliverables.

Echoing the governor’s sentiment, he conveyed President Tinubu’s gratitude to the people of Cross River and reaffirmed their joint commitment to national progress. He unveiled ambitious plans for tourism revival, symbolised by the 20th anniversary of Carnival Calabar this December — not just a celebration, but a global renaissance of the state’s cultural pride. “We shall return to the world stage with splendour, for our story is worth telling,” he promised.

Speaker after speaker lent their voice to the crescendo of praise. Bishop Alex Ukam of Biase, in a tone brimming with reverence, declared, “The governor has neither disappointed God nor man.” Architect Eyo Ndem of Akpabuyo lauded Otu’s focused leadership, saying, “Your works speak louder than banners.” From the north, Rt. Hon. Legor Idagbo cut through the political divides: “This is not a southern charade. This is a Cross River consensus. We in the north stand firmly with Governor Otu and President Tinubu.”

In Odukpani, Ambassador Nyong Asuquo extolled Otu as the finest governor in the state’s history, while Akamkpa’s Ntufam John Achort Okon praised the administration for empowering locals and elevating grassroots voices. The First Lady’s health outreach was also saluted as a transformative pillar for rural women and children. When it was time to formalise the endorsement, Senator Florence Ita-Giwa and Prof. Ivara Esu led the charge with declarative passion. “We judged him by his past and endorsed him for the future,” said Ntufam Edim Inok Edim, sealing the pact of loyalty with poetic finality.

As the stadium reverberated with chants, songs, and the promise of continuity, it became clear that this rally was far more than a political showpiece. It was a gathering of hearts, a coalition of dreams. “2027 is not just a date,” thundered Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong. “It is a destination. And with Governor Otu and President Tinubu, we are already on the journey.” The sun may have set on the rally, but the fire ignited in Cross River shall burn brightly until destiny is fulfilled.

  • Edo pledges to support Osayi-Samuel’s quest to develop young talents

Edo pledges to support Osayi-Samuel’s quest to develop young talents

Edo State Government has pledged support for the desires of Super Eagles defender and Fenerbahçe star, Bright Osayi-Samuel, to give back to society by organising an annual U-13 football tournament

Deputy Governor of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, spoke when he played host to Osayi-Samuel in his office.

Idahosa said Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration was interested in using sports as a tool to empower youths by developing and initiating sporting activities across the 18 local government areas of the state.

He said football has become a money-spinning business for youths.

“This is why the government of Monday Okpebholo will prioritise sport development by investing massively and also attract the right investment in the sector.

“For us, a government, this is not a better way to curb youth restiveness, create employment opportunities and also improve the impact on income of families.”

Osayi-Samuel, who called for increased investment in grassroots football development in Nigeria, said the country has abundant football talent, saying a lack of opportunities and exposure has kept many future stars in the shadows.

“I think it’s an opportunity. There are a lot of very good footballers, but they’re not seen.

“Everyone has a story. We just need to listen and invest. My tournament is a platform to let these young boys showcase what they are good at.

“This is my home. I’ll do anything to give my support. I love football, and I want to see the new stories from Benin,” he said.

On his part, Executive Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission (ESSC) Hon. Amadin Desmond Enabulele, said the Governor was deeply passionate about identifying and nurturing young talents across the state.

He said the governor has mandated communities within the state to actively engage in discovering raw talent.

“When we talk about Under-13, we are deliberate about ‘catching them young.’ This tournament aligns perfectly with the Governor’s vision for sports development in Edo State.”

    …condemn killings of 13 non-indigenes in Anambra

Stakeholders under the auspices of the Future Nigeria Movement (FNM) have called on the Southeastern governors, community leaders and security agencies to rise against homegrown blood-thirsty killers in the zone.

FNM in a statement signed in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Wednesday by its Leader, Livingstone Wechie, was reacting to the brutal killing of 13 non-indigenes in Anambra State on Monday.

The victims from Ebonyi State but resided in Ogboji, Orumba South Local Government Area, were gunned down by unknown gunmen during their Union’s meeting in the area.

Wechie said it was worrisome that records of coordinated and unreported killings in the Southeast were painting the zone in a bad light, with justice in limbo.

He recalled that in October of 2024, there were the Nibo killings of no less than 13 persons for no reason in Anambra, insisting that every citizen should be safe to reside in any part of the country without any fear.

He said, “FNM suggests that these killings, which have taken the lives of many prominent sons and daughters of the state and the zone in various sectors, are denigrating the potency and prospects of the area.

“It is common knowledge that Anambra state is the economic stronghold of the South-East that serves as a feeder to its neighbours and beyond, making an agitation on the business hub an attack on the livelihood of the area in general. Thus, the economic credentials of Anambra have made it an easy target for insecurity, and this is not good for the nation in general”.

Wechie suggested that the continuous killings in the Southeastern states should be treated with an intentional urgency to reassure the residents and dwellers in the area of their safety.

He said there must be an urgent return to the drawing board by all critical stakeholders in the zone from all backgrounds to put up an actionable plan to bring this menace under total control.

He said, “FNM maintains that Anambrarians, as well as the entire Southeast states, should rise against these suspected homegrown extremists who may be drawing support from yet to be identified external and internal sources that end up undermining the efforts of government and relevant security agencies.

“FNM recommends that community efforts must be explored to address this existential threat that has put the lives of the people at the mercy of enemy forces. The governments at all levels must genuinely collaborate with those directly affected to implement the various recommended solutions to this problem.

“There appear to be some internal elements who have turned the situation into a lifetime industry to endanger the lives of the people with delight. Governments at all levels must come out openly and go after these enemies of our society to bring them to justice.

“It is the considered opinion of FNM that the Southeast Governors should further evince the deliberate commitment needed to address this crisis that has put the future of the zone at high risk.

“We acknowledge that Governor Chukwuma Soludo has invested so much to bring security to Anambra, just like his other counterparts in the zone. However, there is a suspicion that a window is still open that gives leverage to these killers to undermine all efforts, and the same must now be tackled from all cylinders.”

NADDC, Edo train 50 women on CNG vehicle conversion

The National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), in partnership with the Edo State government, has commenced the training of 50 women in Edo on how to convert petrol-powered vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered vehicles.

Director General/CEO of NADDC, Olumemimo Joseph Osanipin, said the initiative aligns with the federal government’s drive to promote cleaner and more affordable energy solutions in the transportation sector, while also empowering local technicians with the necessary skills for safe and efficient vehicle conversion.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony in Benin City, Osanipin—represented by the Deputy Director, Industrial Infrastructure, Mrs. Joke Onireti—explained that the programme is designed to foster gender equality, boost economic empowerment, and support the growth of Nigeria’s automotive sector within the emerging CNG ecosystem.

He noted that the training is part of the Council’s broader efforts to encourage the widespread adoption of CNG as a safer, cleaner, and cost-effective fuel alternative for mobility across the country.

According to him, “This training is designed to last for five days and to provide technicians with theoretical and practical hands-on knowledge on the conversion of petrol-powered vehicles to CNG-powered vehicles.

“The aim is to actively engage trainees in a variety of learning outcomes and promote teamwork among them. The training is structured to allow ample time for hands-on practice, enabling participants to demonstrate and apply the acquired knowledge and technical know-how practically.

After the removal of the fuel subsidy, the present government said we should look for alternatives. We have been training males on CNG conversions. We want to introduce many ladies to this sector. They will have a skill upgrade on how to convert to CNG. This is the first training for ladies in collaboration with the state government and Lady Mechanic.

Director of Lady Mechanic Initiative, Sandra Aguebor, said she was the first woman to be trained and certified as a CNG conversion specialist.

Aguebor said the beneficiaries would be deployed to the workshop after the training.

She encouraged the beneficiaries to focus on the training to set up their workshops in the future.

  • Urhobo, Ijaw coalition demands release of final Warri delineation report

Urhobo, Ijaw coalition demands release of final Warri delineation report

A group, Coalition for Urhobo/Ijaw Integrity and Justice (CUIIJ) has reiterated demand for the release of the final wards and units delineation report of Warri Federal Constituency by the Independent National Electoral Commission as ordered by the Supreme Court.

In a statement on Wednesday, the CUIIJ expressed concern that interested parties were “abusing their proximity to power to frustrate the release of the final delineation report.”

The statement was signed by CUIIJ President, Tega Marvelous, and Secretary, Godknows Ebimene.

Calling on the Federal Government to “resist external and internal interference and allow justice to take its rightful place,” they called on the international community and human rights bodies “to watch closely and call out ethnic oppression disguised as political lobbying.”

The group maintained that completing the delineation process was in the interest of “justice and equity” for all stakeholders.

“The final judgment of the Supreme Court on the long-awaited Warri Federal Constituency delineation was clear. It was decisive. It was just. Yet, what we are witnessing today is a coordinated, shameless and desperate attempt by the Itsekiri ethnic group to upend this justice through manipulation, political pressure and falsehood.

“They have run to international bodies, feeding them lies and fabrications of insecurity in the region, when in truth, it is they who continue to provoke conflict by refusing to accept peaceful outcomes,” parts of the statement read.

They restated that the Urhobo and Ijaw people are neither “strangers,” nor “squatters” in Warri, but owners of the land, adding that no “twisted propaganda or political muscle can rewrite that truth.

“For years, we have walked the path of peace. We have respected the courts. We have allowed legal processes to run their course, even while being provoked, harassed and marginalized. But this, this right here, this deliberate sabotage of a Supreme Court directive is the final insult to our patience.”

  • Gender inclusivity: NDDC, others seek urgent reforms

Gender inclusivity: NDDC, others seek urgent reforms

There is a need to empower women to drive sustainable development, experts have said.

They spoke at the International Women’s Day celebration organised by Womanhood Outreach International and sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Speakers called for a new deal for Nigerian women.

The event was held at Wetland Hotel in Ughelli, Delta State with the theme: “Accelerating Action  Investing in Women, Advancing Rights, Leadership & Equality.”

Mrs. Imoni Ahunna, Director of Youth, Sports, Culture, and Women Affairs at NDDC, argued that “women must no longer remain at the background”.

According to her, the time has come for women to step into national conversations, lead advocacy, and drive the change we seek.

Her words: “At the NDDC, we are not just celebrating women; we are investing in their power to transform the region.”

Keynote speaker, Dr. Clara D. Moemeke, Associate Professor of Science Education at the University of Delta, Agbor, stressed that society can no longer pretend that gender equity does not matter.

“Gender equity is not inevitable, it is intentional. It is driven by bold policies, courageous advocacy, and deliberate investment.

“When we delay gender action, we delay national development,” Dr. Moemeke said.

She pointed to statistics which shows that women make up nearly 50 per cent of the global population, yet own only 20 per cent of land, perform 76 per cent of unpaid care work, and remain underrepresented in leadership, with Nigeria ranking 125th out of 146 countries on the 2024 Global Gender Gap Index.

Dr. Moemeke challenged the audience to look beyond the celebration and brainstorm on solutions: “This theme is not a slogan—it is a mandate. Imagine a world where girls complete school without fear of marriage or violence, where women lead without bias, and where every voice matters”

She offered a poignant reminder: “Every time we underinvest in women, we undercut our democracy, our economy, and our humanity. This is not a charity callnow it is a strategic imperative.”

On her part, Prof. Mary Olire Edema of the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, argued that women’s leadership is not a luxury it is essential. According to her “empowering women is a catalyst for sustainable development.

“Leadership must begin with access access to education, to finance, to political platforms, and to safety”

She called for a cultural shift, saying, “We must move past a society where women join groups to receive handouts and into a generation no where women lead cooperatives, industries, and institutions.”

Dr. Olufunke Chenube of the University of Delta reminded participants that gender inequality is deeply rooted in historical exclusion. “When you exclude half the population from leadership for generations, you don’t just hurt women you cripple national progress.

“The laws, the systems, the economy all reflect this inherited bias”, she said.

Other speakers harped on economic empowerment, inclusive governance, gender-based violence, and the urgent need for legal reforms.

The event featured real-life testimonies and experiences shared by some survivors of gender- based abuses.Women trailblazers in politics and business also shared their experiences. They called for a Nigeria where laws protect, leadership includes, and every girl is raised to believe that her voice belongs not in the background, but at the decision-making table.

One of the most striking voices came from a widow and small-scale farmer, Blessing Okoro from Patani council area of the state who declared: “Today, I saw myself in these women. I don’t need permission to lead I need opportunity.”
