Ex-militants: we are proud of Otuaro’s strides in Amnesty Office

The first set of former Niger Delta freedom fighters who accepted the Federal Government’s amnesty arose from their meeting in Port Harcourt with a resolution that all those distracting the coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme, PAP, Chief Dennis Otuaro should allow the man to concentrate in his assignment.

Saying that they were proud of Otuaro’s efforts in stabilising the PAP and deliberately ensuring that beneficiaries of the amnesty programme got their dues as and when due, leaders of the first phase repentant militants said those attacking Otuaro were doing so for selfish reasons.

They spoke as the ex-militant leaders have begun the processes of getting fresh leaders that will coordinate their activities.

Pioneer president of the first phase ex-militants forum, Pastor Reuben Wilson. who spoke with journalists after their meeting said they could not fold their hands and watch people run down a man who was doing very well for the amnesty programme.

He said: “The man is doing very well in the office as the administrator. He has done very well, he has tried. At least he is truly taking the amnesty programme to higher heights. He’s been someone that has been in the struggle.

“100 per cent of his stay in the Niger Delta creeks was for the struggle; so he knows all the (ex-militants camp) leaders by their names. And what he is doing now, we are really happy with it.

“We have noticed that we have some criminal elements that are trying to bring him down, but we are here to say that their actions will amount to nothing because they are not working in the interest of the amnesty programme.”

Wilson, a major supporter and campaigner for the emergence of President Bola Tinubu, also said it was the best decision to appoint Otuaro as head of the amnesty office.

He said it was gratifying to note that Otuaro was already giving proper expression to the president’s dream of a properly managed amnesty office. He said Tinubu must have seen how well Otuaro had managed the amnesty office, insisting that a greater percentage of the stakeholders were very happy with the coordinator.

“We want him(Otuaro) to succeed and if we as major stakeholders say that Otuaro is good and active, that means he is good.  We can confirm to the world that the PAP coordinator is doing excellently well. That is why we, in the course of our meeting, decided to pass a vote of confidence on him,” he added.

Wilson said part of the issues Otuaro was having was his decision to close the doors against ghost contractors who were merely collecting monies but refusing to work.

“There are people who were making millions of naira through the back door.

“So, as Otuaro decided to end that regime, they decided to go against him. Now, there is no way for them to make the money they were making, hence their decision to start cooking up stories in order to rubbish the man. That is all that is playing out,” he argued.

Also speaking, Prince Emeka Igwe, the Imo State coordinator of the group said “Otuaro is trying to change the narrative, he is trying to change the old ways that things were being done and the system is fighting back.

According to him: “The SA is reaching out to the grassroots, interfacing with everybody, making sure that those that own the programme will benefit from it; that is what is happening. All of us today passed a vote of confidence on him because of his leadership style. We are very, very happy with him.

“Anywhere we go, we say that he is trying and we want him to do more in this line that he is going, let nothing distract him. Anytime, any day we are with him 100 per cent.”

Nature Dumale Kieghe, the pioneer secretary of the First Phase Ex-agitators in the Niger Delta, who also spoke said:  “Among ex-agitators in the Niger Delta, over time we have been classified as the most responsible, as touching the way we do our things and presentations in different fora.

“We have vowed that we will not bring down any of our own, we took that decision a long time ago, when Kingsley Kuko was special adviser to the president on amnesty. Now we have another administrator, in the person of Dr Dennis Otuaro, who is also our won.”

Nigeria engages South-South region in SDGs progress review

The Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Sustainable Development Goals (OSSAP-SDGs) has convened a regional consultation in Uyo as part of Nigeria’s preparations for its third Voluntary National Review (VNR) on the implementation of the SDGs.

The consultation brought together key stakeholders—including government officials, civil society organizations, academics, private sector representatives, and marginalized groups—to assess progress, identify challenges, and strengthen grassroots participation.

According to a statement issued on Friday by Desmond Utomwen, the Special Assistant on Media to the SSAP-SDGs, insights from the discussions will feed into Nigeria’s VNR, set for presentation at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in July 2025.

Speaking through her Senior Technical Adviser, Bala Yunusa, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on SDGs, Princess Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, underscored the importance of inclusivity in the review process.

“The VNRs are most useful when conducted through an inclusive, participatory process. This is why we are here—to consult widely with key stakeholders across all segments of society.

“This is our ‘whole-of-government and whole-of-society’ approach to SDG implementation in Nigeria,” she stated.

Princess Orelope-Adefulire also highlighted Nigeria’s previous VNRs in 2017 and 2020, stressing that the 2025 review comes at a pivotal moment following the adoption of the ‘Pact for the Future’ at the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2024.

Representing Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Nsikak Linus Nkan, reaffirmed the state’s commitment to sustainable development, citing progress in healthcare, gender equality, economic growth, marine conservation, and development partnerships.

“Akwa Ibom has made remarkable strides in key SDG areas. Our achievements reflect the dedication of government, civil society, and all stakeholders involved. However, we recognize that much work remains to be done,” Dr. Nkan said.

In her goodwill message, Mrs. Ime David of the Akwa Ibom State SDGs Focal Office commended the initiative and encouraged stakeholders to use the forum to drive regional development.

“This summit provides an invaluable platform to share best practices and forge partnerships. Together, we can build a more sustainable, equitable, and prosperous world,” she noted.

The South-South consultation is part of a nationwide engagement effort, with similar sessions planned in Enugu (South-East), Gombe (North-East), Kaduna (North-West), and Abuja (North-Central).

The process will culminate in a National Validation in Abuja, ensuring Nigeria’s 2025 VNR meets global standards.

Allow local refineries to survive, group urges NNPCL, NMDPRA

…says crude oil must not be withheld from Dangote, others

Conference of Energy & Finance Consultants (CEFC), a group known for championing integrity, quality delivery and financial management among energy consultants, has called on the major oil regulatory agencies in Nigeria to allow local refineries function smoothly.

The group specifically urged the Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mallam Mele Kyari, and the CEO of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Mr. Farouk Ahmed, to encourage local refineries in Nigeria to grow.

In a statement signed on Thursday by Engr. Anthony Igeriwa, spokesman for the Conference, the group said the call was made in the larger interest of the masses.

They argued that, the low importation level in January and February of the first quarter of the year 2025, has helped drastically to reduce corruption amongst the stakeholders in the country.

“The fuel importation cabal want fuel importation to contine, and hence, they are planning to stop the release of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery and others.

“The Dangote Petrochemical Refinery in Lagos, is adjudged the largest single and private refinery in Africa, and it is believed that very soon, all the neighbourhood countries and other countries would be exporting the refined fuel from Nigeria.

“This is largely due to its richness in content and refined quality. The product is not adulterated and the supplies to the independent marketers, retailers and end users is smooth and friendly, unlike what we used to have.

“This is the kind of things the oil cabals don’t want to see. Those who have held us hostage economically want to see us cry more. They want to see the long queue returned to our fuel stations. They want to see more of our fuel pumps and vehicles damaged by fake fuel.

“They want the few privileged crooks to continue importing fake products to Nigeria, while they at the regulatory agencies live fat on our anguish. They want the poor to become poorer, leaving only few of them to manipulate our commonwealth. But thank God Dangote has ended their career. The rest will be history by God’s grace”, the statement added.

The group called on National Assembly to expedite actions on the ongoing probe of the importation of adulterated petroleum products to Nigeria; urging the lawmakers to stand with the masses, by ensuring crude oil is adequately and regularly supplied to Dangote and other local refineries in Nigeria.

  • Oil spill: Bayelsa community laments neglect, pollution of river, creeks

Oil spill: Bayelsa community laments neglect, pollution of river, creeks

The Obololi community in the Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State has expressed their distress that no relief has been provided following the oil leak on February 16, which discharged crude oil and contaminated the Obololi River and surrounding creeks.

The National Oil Spills Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) traced the source of the leak to a 16-inch underwater pipeline running from Nun River to Kolo Creek, operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC).

In an interview, the Chairman of the Obololi Community Development Committee (CDC), Goodnews Okoi, stated that the coastal community is experiencing severe water scarcity amid a cholera outbreak throughout the state.

The CDC Chairman noted that, due to the pollution of the Obololi River, which the residents previously relied upon for drinking and domestic use, they are forced to resort to purchasing sachet water at prohibitive prices.

Okoi said, “We feel abandoned; this oil spillage has adversely impacted the entire community. We have suspended our fishing vacation as our farmlands and creeks are also not spared.

“The cost of water has gone up by approximately 100 per cent to N50 naira per sachet and N800 per bag, the hardship is so much, given the general economic hardship.

“Sadly, the operator of the facility has not shown any concern on the sufferings caused by the spill.

“In fact, what the officials of SPDC tell us is that unless the Joint Investigative Visit (JIV) concludes on equipment failure, SPDC will not act.

“Also, we have been expecting reliefs from the state government following the visit of Bayelsa Commissioner for Environment.

“The local government Chairman, Target Segibo, offered to rehabilitate an existing borehole. They started repairs, but the submersible pump failed, and they are yet to procure a replacement.”

Okoi noted that the oil firm had yet to engage the community on the recommendations by NOSDRA to divert the river to enable access to the leak point.

He explained that the community is nursing fear that creating a dam to divert the river will distort the navigability of the river.

The CDC chair further said: “This recommendation by NOSDRA is of great concern to us. How will the boats that bring goods, merchandise, and essential items come in? The SPDC has to factor these concerns and make the operations have a human face.

“Look at what we have been going through since the middle of February till date and the company has not provided any form of support in the face of the impact of the spill.”

It was further learnt from Obololi community sources that the recovery of spilled crude into plastic tanks was already ongoing.

A spokesman for SPDC, Mr Michael Adande, earlier said that the oil firm had shut oil feeds into the leaking pipeline.

Adande pledged to update on relief, remediation, and response efforts but had yet to do so.

Tinubu’s economic policies making progress, boosting states’ finances – Omo-Agege

…demands accountability from Oborevwori on allocations

Immediate past deputy president of the Senate, Ovie Omo-Agege, has said the economic policies and other actions taken by the administration of President Bola Tinubu have provided a significant financial boost for states.

He disclosed this at an interactive leaders and stakeholders’ meeting in Warri South-West, Isoko South, and Isoko North Local Government Areas, commending President Tinubu for his unwavering commitment to transforming the Nigerian economy.

Omo-Agege, the 2023 Delta All Progressives Congress governorship candidate, noted that the initial difficulties experienced during the policy implementation phase are now giving way to economic benefits, bringing significant advantages to Delta State.

According to him, some of the benefits include increased revenue allocation and investment opportunities in critical sectors, which are ultimately driving growth and development in the region.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has done exceptionally well. Upon closer examination of his administration’s policies and actions, it becomes clear that he has made remarkable progress. One of his notable achievements is the significant financial boost provided to states. In Delta State, the FAAC allocation has tripled compared to the previous amount,” he said.

Omo-Agege revealed that Delta State has received over ₦1 trillion in revenue allocation, a threefold increase from the previous administration.

“Local governments in Delta State, including Warri South-West, Isoko South, and Isoko North, now receive more funds than ever before.

“If the people were aware of the exact amount of money allocated to this area, they would be astonished,” he stated.

Expressing concern that the benefits of these substantial funds are not being felt in Delta State, Senator Omo-Agege demanded accountability from Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

The former DSP emphasized the need for good governance and accountability, calling on Deltans to support the APC in the 2027 elections to restore good governance in the state.

Omo-Agege urged Deltans to query and demand transparency on the use of federal funds, stating: “If the state has received over ₦1 trillion, where has the money gone?

“Going through Warri South-West, Isoko South, and Isoko North, I am yet to see key development projects where this money was used for. Sadly, many Deltans do not even know that Tinubu’s administration has sent such huge sums to the state.”

Recalling President Tinubu’s campaign visit to Delta State, he said the President was taken aback by the sheer scale of deprivation and underdevelopment in the region, noting that the situation was similar to many other parts of the Niger Delta where crude oil is produced.

He posited: “This experience was one of the driving forces behind his decision to announce the removal of fuel subsidy on his first day in office, thereby freeing up vital resources for state. Despite this significant influx of funds, Sheriff Oborevwori has remained remarkably silent about how these resources are being utilized, particularly in oil-producing communities.

“This money belongs to all of us, not just the government. We must stand up, work hard, and ensure we support the APC fully to restore good governance in Delta come 2027.”

  • Delta 2027: APC will end PDP’s reign, Omo-Agege assures

Delta 2027: APC will end PDP’s reign, Omo-Agege assures

Leveraging President Bola Tinubu’s landmark economic reforms and internal restructuring, as well as widespread discontent with the Oborevwori administration’s failures, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, the former Deputy President of the Senate, has confidently predicted an All Progressives Congress (APC) victory in the 2027 Delta State governorship election.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ meeting in Koko, Warri North, Omo-Agege reflected on the APC’s narrow loss in the 2023 governorship election, vowing to unseat the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forthcoming election. “We came so close in 2023, but fell short by a whisker,” he said. “However, we’ve learned from our mistakes and are now more determined than ever to win Delta State for the APC.”

Omo-Agege rallied supporters, addressed post-election grievances, and rejected the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)’s declaration of 4,000 votes for APC and 10,000 for PDP in Warri North, alleging systemic rigging by PDP. “Our votes were organic; theirs were products of writing,” he charged, recalling the PDP’s dubious record of delivering 68,000 votes in the area.

Senator Omo-Agege vigorously defended President Tinubu’s economic reforms, highlighting the removal of fuel subsidies and exchange rate unification. While acknowledging the initial hardships, he framed these measures as crucial for Nigeria’s and Delta State’s future development. “Although increased fuel, food, and forex prices cause pain, President Tinubu’s wise decision-making will yield a better future,” Omo-Agege stated. He noted that Delta State now receives more funds, as President Tinubu channels savings to states beyond Abuja. This, he believes, will have a transformative impact, tying the APC’s 2027 prospects to the president’s “Renewed Hope” agenda.

The Delta State APC leader acknowledged strategic mistakes in response to stakeholders’ critiques, including the failure to integrate new members, which led to the alienation of loyalists. “We’ve paid the price for this oversight,” he admitted. “I should have fostered a stronger bond between old and new members. That error had significant consequences.”

He urged PDP members to defect, describing the ruling party as a “sinking ship” on the brink of collapse. While acknowledging that APC faces similar unity challenges, he downplayed internal friction as “growing pains” ahead of 2027. “Post-congress disputes are not unique to us; even the PDP is grappling with internal conflicts,” he argued.

The leader criticized members who boycotted polls due to grievances, labeling it self-sabotage. “Why stay home? Vote first, defend your votes, and then resolve issues. By staying away, we all lose,” he said, lamenting missed opportunities to secure seats in Asaba.

With humility, he acknowledged, “I’m no different from you. I make mistakes.” He pledged inclusive stakeholder engagement, emphasizing that “2027 demands unity. We must put aside divisions between old and new members and work together towards a common goal.”

Reiterating claims of being “robbed” of victory in the 2023 governorship election and Supreme Court ruling, Omo-Agege projected optimism, asserting that Tinubu’s policies would stabilize the economy by 2027, making APC the “natural choice” for voters seeking “democratic dividends.”

Concluding with a rallying cry, Omo-Agege declared, “2027 is our date with destiny. With Tinubu’s vision and achievements and our collective resolve, Delta will flip!” The hall erupted in cheers. However, to make this vision a reality, the APC must swiftly put its own house in order and unite behind its strongest candidate, thereby empowering itself to effectively challenge and dismantle the PDP’s deeply entrenched and powerful rigging machinery.

De Gratia boss urges media practitioners to promote peace in Rivers

Pastor Paulinus Nsirim, the Executive Director of De Gratia Centre for Media Rights and Education, has called on media practitioners in Rivers State to use their platforms to foster peace and unity amid ongoing political tensions.

The call comes at a time of the heightened political tension in Rivers State, with concerns over the role of the media in either escalating or de-escalating conflicts.

In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Nsirim emphasized the critical role of the media in promoting peaceful coexistence and reducing political discord in the state.

“As agenda setters, Media Practitioners should place peaceful coexistence at the front burner of their reportage and analysis of the current situation in the State.

“We must shun everything that will promote violence and make everyone in the State know that we have a shared prosperity to protect.

“This is not the time to publicise hate speeches but a time to disseminate information that will break down the barriers of politics, tribe and religion.

“I enjoin media practitioners to to use their exalted positions to unite rather than divide the State.”

Nsirim further advised media professionals to uphold integrity in shaping public opinion and to resist being influenced by financial inducements.

  • Egbema offshore communities, leaders of thought caution Mike Tiemo over publications on Doyah Tiemo

Egbema offshore communities, leaders of thought caution Mike Tiemo over publications on Doyah Tiemo

The leadership of Egbema Offshore Communities and Egbema Leaders of Thought (ELOT) have expressed concerns over Mr. Mike J. K. Tiemo’s recent publications targeting Elder Edmund Doyah Tiemo.

In a statement by Hon. Joel Bisina and Godwin Tabuka Esq., Vice Chairman and Secretary, Egbema Leaders of Thought (ELOT), the leaders emphasised disappointment regarding posts circulating on social media and in national newspapers that allegedly tarnish the reputation of Elder Edmund Doyah Tiemo.

They alleged these communications were orchestrated by Mike Tiemo and his associates.

“Elder Edmund Doyah Tiemo is well-respected for his discipline, integrity, and honesty,” the statement noted.

“As the current chairman of Egbe.a Opudis Host Community Development Trust Board of Trustees, overseeing Chevron Nigeria Limited’s onshore activities, it is impossible for him to interfere in matters concerning the Egbema offshore communities.”

The statement further clarified that Elder Tiemo is dedicated solely to advocating for the recognition of the offshore communities rather than seeking to become involved with them.

“It is crucial to understand that the process of securing Egbema offshore recognition is ongoing and necessitates the collaboration of all stakeholders,” the leaders reminded.

“Elder E. E. Tiemo has demonstrated remarkable leadership and resource mobilization alongside other leaders to support this important cause.”

Recognised as a prominent community leader across the entire Egbema Kingdom and the Polobubor community, Elder E. E. Tiemo is known for his commitment to peace, development, and excellence in leadership.

The statement countered claims about Mr. Mike Tiemo, stating, “The 93 Egbema offshore communities have rallied behind Elder Tiemo, contradicting unfounded assertions of his rejection. It is evident that Mr. Mike Tiemo and his associates have been dismissed, leading to their baseless outcry.”

Furthermore, it was noted: “Mr. Mike Tiemo appears to be afraid, as the Polobubor community he hails from will not tolerate his actions regarding offshore matters, particularly given his failure to initiate any projects in his community over the past 20 years, prior to the introduction of the Petroleum Industry Act.”

The leaders reiterated that Elder Tiemo poses no security threat to the offshore communities, instead highlighting that it is Mr. Mike Tiemo and his associates who may pose concerns due to their actions.

“Elders and leaders from Egbema communities have called upon Elder Edmund Tiemo to guide the kingdom, recognising his experience and the respect he commands both legally and traditionally.

“Elder Edmund Tiemo is a genuine development advocate,” the statement added.

“He provides free treatments for Egbema sons and daughters every year, offers scholarships to local youth, and organizes annual empowerment programs for men and women in the Kingdom, among many other developmental initiatives.”

As a prince of the Oloduwa ruling house, Elder Tiemo does not need a royal title to uphold justice and truth within the Kingdom. He is a source of inspiration for both the youth and elders of Egbema.

The leaders also noted their awareness of the traditional authority of the Agadagba of Egbema Kingdom and the council led by Chief Tax Agbaibor, particularly in matters concerning the traditional institution.

“Mr. Mike Tiemo has yet to win any court case, and his attempts to obstruct progress in Egbema Kingdom have been noted,” they asserted, encouraging him to await the resolution of the legal matters he claims to have initiated.

The statement added: “Egbema Offshore Communities assert that no individual or group has the right to engage in offshore matters without the authority of the relevant community leaders. The only ‘offense’ committed by Elder Edmund Tiemo relates to upholding this principle, which has understandably caused distress for Mr. Mike Tiemo and his associates.”

The leaders advised Mr. Mike Tiemo to offer a sincere apology to Elder Tiemo and exercise restraint regarding his criticisms of the elder statesman who they said is devoted to peace and progress within Egbema Kingdom.

Omo-Agege reaffirms commitment to inclusive leadership in Delta APC

Former deputy Senate President, Obarisi Ovie Omo-Agege, has reaffirmed his commitment to more inclusive leadership in the All Progressives Congress (APC), Delta State chapter.

Speaking at an interactive stakeholders’ meeting in Patani, Patani Local Government Area (LGA), attended by party members, stakeholders, and leaders from across the State, Senator Omo-Agege assured that the party will adopt a more participatory approach to decision-making by giving every stakeholder a voice.

The meeting, which was part of Omo-Agege’s statewide thank-you tour, aimed at reviewing the party’s performance in the last elections, identifying mistakes, and correcting them ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to the Delta APC 2023 governorship candidate, this renewed focus on inclusivity would harness diverse perspectives, accommodate all interests, and empower stakeholders to contribute to the party’s future direction.

“I don’t claim to have a monopoly on good ideas. It’s through conversations like these that we can come up with better solutions to move our party and state forward.

“We’ve made mistakes, but what’s important is that we’re engaging in stakeholder discussions. This is an opportunity for us to exchange ideas, learn from each other, and refine our strategies. We must work together to build a stronger, more united party that truly represents the interests of all Deltans,” he stated.

Senator Omo-Agege commended APC members and voters in Patani for their unwavering support despite facing intimidation and hostility from opposing forces.

“I sincerely thank you all for standing by me and our party. Your support is truly incredible, and I’m proud that you voted not just for me but for our President, Senator, and House of Assembly candidate. Your unwavering support means the world to me,” he said.

Omo-Agege also assured the party faithful that addressing the issues they raised would pave the way for a resounding victory in all elections in 2027.

He emphasized the critical role women play in politics, assuring APC women that the party will support and recognize them as vital stakeholders.

“Women are the backbone of our party and our communities. They play a crucial role in elections, and we must ensure they receive the support and recognition they deserve. I assure you that the concerns raised by our women leaders will be addressed, and we will work tirelessly to promote gender inclusivity and empowerment within our party,” he assured.

Charging party faithful to embrace unity at the unit and ward levels, Omo-Agege asserted that internal crises would be resolved and that Delta APC would emerge stronger and more resilient.

He further assured party loyalists that their hard work and sacrifices would not go unnoticed, promising recognition and rewards for those who have stood by the party.

“Political conflicts and internal crises are inevitable, but we must work through these challenges to strengthen our party. We must build bridges, foster dialogue, and promote understanding among our members. By doing so, we will create a more united, cohesive, and formidable party that can deliver victory in future elections.

“We will ensure that those who have worked tirelessly for our party are recognized and rewarded. We appreciate your dedication, perseverance, and commitment to our shared vision. We will continue to stand by you as we move forward, together, towards a brighter future for Delta State and our great party,” he stated.
