    In a move heralded as a beacon of democracy, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled the list of gubernatorial candidates for the upcoming Edo State election. With 17 contenders vying for the prestigious position of governor, the stage is set for a riveting electoral showdown.

    Among the myriad of aspirants, four towering figures emerge as the frontrunners, each poised to chart a transformative course for Edo State. They are Prince Tom Iseghohi-Okojie of the Action Alliance party, Monday Okpebholo representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olumide Akpata carrying the banner of the Labour Party (LP), and Asue Ighodalo championing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stand at the forefront, embodying hope and promise for the people of Edo.

    What sets this electoral landscape apart is not just the calibre of the candidates but also the inclusion of women in pivotal roles. Remarkably, two out of the four contenders have chosen female running mates, underscoring a progressive shift towards gender inclusivity in Nigerian politics. The decision to select a female running mate brings a myriad of advantages to the table.

    Firstly, it sends a powerful message of gender equality and empowerment, showcasing a commitment to breaking down traditional barriers in politics. Secondly, female leaders often bring a different perspective and approach to governance, fostering greater empathy, inclusivity and collaboration. Lastly, it serves as a catalyst for inspiring future generations of women to actively participate in politics and leadership roles, thereby fostering a more diverse and representative democracy.

    Delving into the profiles of the final four candidates, it becomes evident that each possesses a unique blend of strengths and experiences, along with their respective advantages and challenges.

    The advantages of having a female running mate diverse representation: In a society striving for inclusivity, the selection of a female running mate signals a departure from traditional norms and a commitment to diversity. It brings underrepresented voices to the forefront, enriching the decision-making process with varied experiences and viewpoints.

    Appeal to women voters: Women constitute a significant portion of the electorate, and having a female running mate can resonate strongly with female voters. It reflects an understanding of women’s issues and priorities, thereby fostering trust and garnering support from this demographic.

    Symbol of progress: The presence of women in leadership positions challenges stereotypes and serves as a beacon of progress. It inspires young girls and women across the nation, showcasing that barriers can be broken, and aspirations can be realized irrespective of gender.

    Assessing the final four candidates: Prince Tom Iseghohi-Okojie:  With a background steeped in corporate executive leadership, community development and grassroots engagement, Iseghohi-Okojie brings a nuanced understanding of local issues to the forefront. His emphasis on inclusive governance and sustainable development resonates with voters across demographics. Unfortunately, his party’s relative newcomer status may pose a challenge in garnering widespread support.  On the positive side of things, Prince Tom’s emphasis on grassroots empowerment signals a fundamental reorientation of power dynamics within Edo society. By amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and prioritizing their needs, he seeks to redress historical inequities and empower individuals to actively participate in shaping their own destinies. This grassroots-centric approach not only fosters a sense of ownership and agency among the populace but also cultivates a culture of civic engagement—a vital component of any vibrant democracy.

    In tandem with his emphasis on inclusivity, Prince Tom’s agenda also reflects a commitment to values-driven governance. By espousing principles of integrity, accountability, and transparency, he seeks to instill a culture of ethical leadership that transcends partisan interests. In doing so, he sets a new standard for political conduct—one that is rooted in service to the people rather than self-aggrandisement.

In this sense, Prince Tom’s journey serves as a potent reminder of the transformative power of visionary leadership—a force capable of reshaping not only political institutions but also the very fabric of society itself.

    Monday Okpevbolo (APC): A seasoned politician with a track record of public service, Monday Okpebolo embodies experience and stability. His party affiliation brings with it a formidable support base and resources. However, navigating the complexities of intra-party dynamics and managing divergent interests within the APC may present hurdles along the campaign trail.

    Olumide Akpata (Labour Party): As a candidate representing the Labour Party, Olumide Akpata champions progressive ideals and economic empowerment. His background as a legal luminary lends credibility to his platform, particularly in matters of justice and governance reform. Yet, breaking through the dominance of competing political giants could prove challenging for the Labour Party’s turbulent presence in the state.

    Asue Ighodalo (PDP): With a rich tapestry of experience spanning business and philanthropy, Asue Ighodalo brings a blend of vision and pragmatism to the table. His party affiliation provides a strong backing and a well-established network of support. However, navigating the intricate web of political alliances and managing heightened public expectations poses its own set of challenges.

    The running mate effect: Prince Tom Iseghohi-Okojie & Deaconess Mabel Onaiwu.  At the helm of the Action Alliance party, Prince Iseghohi-Okojie has strategically selected Deaconess Mabel Onaiwu as his running mate, a move that speaks volumes of his commitment to inclusivity and grassroots engagement. Onaiwu’s illustrious career as a Chief Nursing Officer with the Edo State hospital management exemplifies dedication and service to the community. Her deep-rooted ties to the Assemblies of God church and extensive philanthropic endeavours underscore her unwavering commitment to uplifting the lives of others.  This combination will present massive issues for incumbent politicians because it has the combination of extensive financial, economic and transformative experience, with grassroots impact, philanthropy and extensive political experience locally, nationally and globally.  

    However, the relatively small and unknown nature of the Action Alliance will present a challenge for this formidable duo.  

    Monday Okpebolo & Denis Idahosa: Representing the APC, Monday Okpebolo has enlisted the support of Denis Idahosa, a rising political star known for his previous gubernatorial bid. While strategically sound geographically, this decision may carry disadvantages, particularly in comparison to the formidable female running mates chosen by other contenders.

    However, Okpebolo’s extensive political experience and Idahosa’s grassroots mobilization efforts cannot be underestimated.

    Olumide Akpata & Faith Alufohai: Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s flagbearer, has opted for Faith Alufohai as his running mate, leveraging the advantages of a female presence on the ticket. However, the party’s reputational liabilities and rumours surrounding Akpata’s relationship with the incumbent governor may overshadow the benefits of this strategic choice, potentially hindering their electoral prospects.

    Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie: Asue Ighodalo, representing the PDP, has aligned himself with Osarodion Ogie, a top official closely associated with the present governor. This alliance sends a message that could be perceived as a bid for a third term, a notion that Edo citizens are likely to vehemently reject for various reasons, including the desire for change and resistance to the perpetuation of entrenched power dynamics.

    The rejection of illegitimate power sustenance: Edo citizens have historically shown a strong aversion to politicians attempting to clandestinely extend their tenure in office. The attempt to sustain power beyond constitutional limits is viewed as a betrayal of democratic principles and an affront to the will of the people. Such actions undermine trust in the political process and erode confidence in the integrity of governance, ultimately leading to widespread disillusionment and unrest among the electorate.

    The epic battle ahead: As the campaign trail heats up, Edo State braces itself for an epic battle between the four contenders. At present, the PDP holds a slight lead, closely followed by the APC, with the Action Alliance trailing behind and Labour facing significant challenges. However, with the fast-growing momentum of the Action Alliance party, the dynamics of the race are poised to shift dramatically in the coming months.

    Looking ahead: In the months leading up to the elections, Edo voters will face a pivotal choice between embracing the promise of something new and transformative leadership embodied by Prince Tom Iseghohi-Okojie or opting to sustain the legacy of the incumbent governor. As the countdown to the gubernatorial elections commences, Edo State finds itself at a crossroads, poised to make a choice that will shape its future trajectory. With a diverse array of candidates offering competing visions for progress and prosperity, the electorate hold the power to chart a course towards a brighter tomorrow. May the spirit of democracy prevail and may the voices of the people resound loud and clear on Election Day. With their sophisticated understanding of the issues at stake and their unwavering commitment to shaping the future of their state, Edo citizens are poised to chart a course that will reverberate far beyond the confines of their borders.     Rotary Club 9141 canvasses support for leaders

    The district governor, Rotary Club District 9141, Emeke Utebor, has urged Nigerians to constructively engage their leaders rather than criticise without providing solutions.

    He said making the world a better place must be the responsibility of all Nigerians rather than of the leaders alone.

    He admonished citizens not to shy away from their civic duties, adding that protecting government projects was a veritable way to appreciate our leaders.

    Utebor, who spoke on the sidelines of the Rotary Club’s Joint District Conference, which was held in Asaba, Delta Capital, urged Rotarians to create hope in the world with appreciation.

    The joint district conference with the theme “Create Hope in the World” attracted over 3700 delegates from Edo, Delta, Bayelsa and Rivers States to its 4-day conference.

    Utebor’s tenure, who was installed district governor of District 9141 in June 2023, ends next month. He said the joint district conference was an opportunity for the Rotary Club to apprise their activities and chart the way forward.

    He commended executive members of District 9141 for their commitment during 2023/24 despite the economic crisis at the beginning of the year, adding that the targets set by his team were largely met irrespective of the challenges they faced.

    He said: “I want to use this opportunity to show my gratitude to my fellow Rotarians because anybody who shows gratitude attracts success. I urge them never to give up. We have been able to provide services ranging from the provision of portable water, supporting education, maternal and child health, protection of the environment, lighting up communities, and supporting security agencies.”

    He disclosed that the Rotary Club District 9141 recently donated a N150 million physiotherapy centre to the Delta state government, adding that work commenced on the project in 2016.

    He noted that a dialysis centre which was built by the non-profit organisation at the cost of 52,000 U.S dollars has been installed at Central Hospital, Agbor, Ika South LGA to boost services to the sick.

     According to him, fostering unity amongst members of District 9141 was his most significant achievement under his tenure.

    Utebor noted that the economic challenges including the astronomic rise in foreign exchange rates and, cash crunch faced by citizens also negatively affected the organisation in payment of their dues and project execution.

    He listed other achievements of his team’s provision of insurance policies for members. 

    He called on Rotarians “to support one another to provide service for the rest of the world.”

    Group hits Rivers exco for acting against Tinubu’s order on Fubara

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) Solidarity and Development Forum has denounced the state chairman of the party over the call for the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

    The group, which made this known at a briefing on Thursday in Abuja, described the utterances by Chief Tony Okocha as threatening the very fabric of democracy.

    In a statement co-signed by Comrade Kabir Matazu and Hon. Igwe Ude-Umanta, its convener and co-covener, the group said a call for impeachment is a clear attempt to destabilise the government and create chaos in the State.

    The Forum further criticised the APC chairman for his blatant disrespect of President Bola Tinubu.

    “The President himself, in his wisdom, has called for all parties involved in the disagreement to maintain the status quo and work towards a peaceful resolution,” the statement said.

    “Governor Fubara has heeded this call and has demonstrated his commitment to the vision of inclusivity and good governance that our dear president has upheld since assuming office.

    “In the reality of having to work with people of diverse political affiliations, President Tinubu has successfully built a government devoid of nepotism and marginalization.

    “It will be unfair, and unwise for any party member, or individual not to resonate in the same frequency with our president. It is very disheartening to witness Chief Tony Okocha’s unguided utterances, which not only disregard the president’s call for peace but also pose a threat to the stability and progress of our beloved party.

    “We are appalled by the Chairman’s unguided fervour and lack of understanding of the complex challenges facing Rivers State. His actions are a dent in the respectable image and good representation of what our party stands for.

    “It Is evident to everyone that Chief Tony Okocha has lost sight of the vision and principles of the APC, as his misguided loyalty has compromised the integrity and status of our party.

    “By calling for the impeachment of Governor Fubara without justifiable cause, Mr Tony has not only undermined the unity and cohesion of our party but also endangered the very foundation of our democratic system,” they said.

    BATN foundation launches charity challenge

    British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATN), steadfast in its mission to foster sustainable development in rural Nigeria, has unveiled a Charity Challenge, inviting applications from local NGOs to collaborate in uplifting communities.

     The initiative aims to nominate and support deserving charity organizations making significant strides in societal impact. 

    As part of the challenge, BATN Foundation pledges to donate one million naira to the selected local NGO.

    Individuals are encouraged to nominate local charity organizations and NGOs that have demonstrated a positive influence on society. 

    Through the initiative, BATN Foundation seeks to strengthen the network of organizations dedicated to transforming rural Nigeria for the better.

    NGOs interested in participating must meet the following criteria -registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) or relevant agencies, proven experience in areas such as poverty reduction, support for the elderly, rural community service, sustainable development, and education, non-affiliation with public or government officials and a strong reputation for charitable work, devoid of negative publicity.

    Interested NGOs are required to submit detailed proposals, including, a brief profile highlighting key achievements, proof of registration with the CAC and a one-page document or short video outlining the proposed use of grant funds.

    Shortlisted NGOs will undergo further evaluation to ensure alignment with BATN Foundation’s values and objectives. 

    Finalists will undergo due diligence to verify legal status and reputation.

    General Manager of BATN Foundation, the Oludare Odusanya emphasized the importance of NGO collaboration in empowering rural Nigeria.

    He said:! “We are dedicated to empowering rural Nigeria and recognize the crucial role NGOs play in achieving this goal. Through strategic partnerships, we aim to amplify our impact and support initiatives that directly address the needs for a sustainable future.”

    Interested NGOs must submit proposals outlining qualifications, project plans, and expected outcomes. 

    The Foundation’s governance team will internally review all submissions until the winner is announced.

    The application deadline is May 17th, 2024, and submissions should be made via CharityChallenge-CallForNGOs.

    Orbih accepts Edo PDP Campaign Council appointment

    National vice chairman South-South Chief Dan Orbih has accepted his appointment as a member of the Edo Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) Campaign Council.

    The decision was arrived at during the 586th National Working Committee(NWC) meeting of the party on Tuesday, May 7 in Abuja.

    National Publicity Secretary, Hon Debo Ologunnagba, made this known in a statement on the party’s verified X handle @OfficialPDPNig on Tuesday evening.

    The statement reads in full: “The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its 586th meeting today, Tuesday May 7, 2024 extensively reviewed all issues concerning our Party in Edo State.  The NWC enjoined all leaders, stakeholders and teeming members of our Party in Edo State to, in the overall interest of the people and that of the PDP, close ranks and work together for the success of the Party in the forthcoming Governorship election in Edo State.

    “At the meeting, the NWC considered the reaction and or statement credited to the National Vice Chairman (South South), Chief Dan Orbih on the membership of the Edo State Governorship Election Campaign Council.

    “After a thorough review of the issues and in the spirit of unity and reconciliation, the National Vice Chairman (South South), despite his initial displeasure over the constitution of the Edo State Campaign Council, reconsidered and accepted his inclusion and membership of the Council.

    “The NWC urges the people of Edo State to continue in their massive support and solidarity to our Party and Governorship Candidate, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, ahead of the September 21, 2024 Governorship Election in the State,” Ologunagba wrote.

    Orbih had few days after the list was released publicly rejected his inclusion and vowed not to be part of the Council since he was not consulted and contacted before his name was included in it.

    Group urges FG to hasten action on WACA for riverine communities’ development

    The federal government has been urged to hasten Nigeria’s process of participation in the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Resilience Investment Project to enable access to the World Bank funding for the development of riverine communities across the country.

    A group, Delta Riverine Communities Infrastructural Development Initiatives (DRCIDI), made the appeal in a statement circulated to reporters in Warri, Delta state, on Tuesday, May 7.

    DRCIDI operates under the umbrella body of the Motivated Youth and Children Empowerment Foundation (MY-ACE Foundation) and has been at the forefront of agitations for a holistic development plan for the riverine settlements, especially the oil-producing communities in Delta state.

    The statement which was signed by the group’s chairman, Comrade Samuel Eyengho, also advocated for the ongoing Lagos-Calabar coastal road to be extended to communities such as Escravos, Forcados and Benin River, where multinational oil firms are still operating in the state.

    Applauding President Bola Tinubu for his commitment towards developing the Niger Delta region, the body called on the federal government to take advantage of alternatives, funding bodies like WACA have to offer.

    Parts of the statement read: “We the members of the above advocacy group hereby call on the federal government to expedite participation in the West Africa Coastal Areas (WACA) Resilience Investment Project to develop coastal communities along Escravos, Forcados, Benin River, and other coastal areas that are very critical for several reasons.

    “The call had become imperative putting into consideration the financial constraints under President Tinubu’s administration, even as we are aware of the availability of substantial funds from the World Bank to intervene in critical areas of developmental and social impact projects.

    “The WACA project, in particular, is a prime example of such funds that can go a long way in creating social and economic impact in the communities that are affected by coastal erosion.

    “We consider the urgent need for intervention in coastal communities along Escravos, Forcados, and the Benin River face severe challenges, including environmental degradation and existential threats from oil gas operations, as well as the impacts of climate change. These communities are in dire need of interventions to mitigate these effects.

    “While we appreciate the ongoing coastal road from Lagos to Calabar Spanning approximately 853 km, the body states that these coastal areas are economically, ecologically, and socially significant in the development of the region, as it would spur economic growth, enhance environmental sustainability, and improve the livelihoods of local communities.

    The statement added: “Consequently, accelerating Nigeria’s participation in this laudable project directs the much-needed attention towards the development of these coastal communities which aligns with the WACA programme’s goals which are focused on enhancing coastal resilience and addressing the challenges along the West African coastline.  This targeted intervention will lead to significant progress at both national and regional levels.

    “The WACA project offers an opportunity for the strategic use of resources to address critical issues such as coastal erosion, ocean surges, flooding, pollution, and mangrove depletion in these areas. This ensures that the investments have measurable impacts and contribute to sustainable development.

    “In the area of community engagement and empowerment, WACA is expected to play a significant role in actively engaging with local stakeholders when deploying funds to develop these coastal regions. This inclusive approach allows communities to participate in decision-making processes, empowering them to take ownership of development initiatives and fostering long-term resilience.

    “Given these considerations, it is imperative for the federal government to expedite Nigeria’s access to the WACA project which many other West African Countries have benefitted from since 2018. With the renewed hope agenda of this administration, prompt action is needed to restore hope to these impacted communities through the WACA project, particularly those in the Niger Delta region.

    “This action will address their critical challenges, unlock potential for sustainable development, and enhance the overall resilience of Nigeria’s coastal zones.”

    Interplay of betrayal, hypocrisy and incompetence in Rivers State

    On Monday, May 6, 2024, Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara gave room for severe doubt about his desire for a peaceful reign. This is disappointing for a man who declared that there was no price too much to pay for the peace of the Rivers State and its peoples. The governor threw away the gains of the past efforts at peace when he received a delegation of Ijaw people at the Government House in Port Harcourt.

    During the visit, the delegation which was led by the former Governor of Bayelsa State, His Excellency Henry Seriake Dickson and the pioneer former governor of old Rivers State, His Excellency Alfred Diete Spiff, urged Governor Fubara and his predecessor and benefactor, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, FCT Minister, to embrace peace. The governor and the minister have been lurked in a battle royale over the control of the political structure of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state. The discord follows the governor’s display of ingratitude and disloyalty to the man who is believed to have single-handedly made him governor against all odds. In his response to the delegation, the governor rejected the call for peace and restraint, and chose to talk tough, spit fire and cast aspersions on the man that God used to make him governor. He declared that the Martin Amaewhule-led House of Assembly was non-existent and referred to the Assembly as a group of boys, many of whom he hitherto helped to pay school fees for their children. He also wondered why they were disloyal to him. But the governor has refused to be loyal to the man who made him governor. The governor said God used vessels to make him governor and that those vessels can’t take the place of God, but he wants to be God to those he helped, forgetting that he too was only a vessel, a smaller vessel for that matter. 

    When the crisis broke out, it took different dimensions, the suspension of the former House Leader, Hon. Edison Ehie and some members of the Assembly, issuance of impeachment notice to the governor, bombing and eventual pulling down of the Assembly complex by the governor, and the resignation of some commissioners believed to be loyal to the FCT Minister. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu couldn’t keep quiet and brokered an 8-point peace deal. Governor Fubara accepted the peace deal but would later renege on the agreement, saying it was a mere political solution to a political problem and not a constitutional document. 

    While addressing the Ijaw delegation, he declared the House of Assembly non-existent forgetting that he had earlier submitted names of commissioner-nominees to the same assembly and got them sworn-in based on the recommendation of the House of Assembly. The governor called out some elders in the state as people who, because of what he described as “small, small money”, have refused to speak the truth and play the roles expected of them as statesmen to bring an end to the crisis. 

    Fubara’s refusal to work with the lawmakers, manifest his refusal to resubmit the budget to them, which was part of the peace deal, has left him functioning as a sole administrator. The reality is that there is technically no government in the state and the state is experiencing a period of arrested development since the start of the administration one year ago. When Wike assumed office as the governor of Rivers State, his dedication to monumental projects became evident swiftly. This commitment earned him the title “Mr. Project” from Vice President Prof Yemi Osinbajo during a state visit, later refined to “Mr. Quality Projects,” culminating in recognition as the top governor in infrastructure delivery by President Muhammadu Buhari. Despite political affiliations (Wike in PDP, Osinbajo and Buhari in APC), the tangible impact overshadowed partisan divides.

    Wike’s legacy spans bridges, housing complexes, hospitals, classrooms, and improved pension disbursements, endearing him to the populace and elevating the state’s infrastructure. Yet, concerns arise with Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s governance, marked by ineffective leadership and unnecessary conflicts, notably with the former governor, now the FCT Minister.

    The absence of executive meetings since December 2023 and the substitution of same with unnecessary Thanksgiving services and courtesy visits underscores rudderlessness and governance discord, exacerbated by a disunited cabinet. This focus on superficial activities like frequent thanksgiving services post-court victory instead of substantive governance exacerbates the state’s drift away from the trajectory envisioned in the continuity and consolidation mantra upon which the party ran its campaigns and won in the 2023 general election.

    While Wike isn’t a saint, his alignment with public sentiment regarding Fubara’s ingratitude is palpable. Fubara’s pretense, feigning loyalty until securing power and then opposing benefactors, epitomizes political treachery of legendary proportions. Perhaps Shakespeare had governor Fubara in mind when he wrote this line from Macbeth: “There’s no art to find the mind’s construction in the face.”

    The state’s pressing needs—better infrastructure, healthcare, education, and revenue generation—are sidelined amid a political crisis precipitated and perpetuated by the governor himself.

    The State Executive Council’s neglect underscores governance lapses, veering towards dictatorship within a democracy. Fubara must prioritise state development, shun distractions, and leverage competent advisors for tangible progress, transcending political theatrics for genuine impact.

    The administration has settled for merely covering staff salaries and addressing basic needs. However, Rivers deserves and requires more. The state urgently requires additional infrastructure, especially roads to connect remote villages and towns. Without improved access, these communities will remain marginalized. Moreover, there is a pressing need for more hospitals to ensure unhindered access to quality healthcare. As governance is a continuous process, Fubara’s administration should prioritize the establishment of additional general hospitals. Addressing the housing deficit is also critical, despite Wike’s efforts; there remains a substantial gap that demands focused direction.

    Rivers still falls short of global standards concerning educational facilities and student-to-teacher ratios. The prevailing complacency will not build upon Wike’s landmark achievements.

    Internally generated revenue presents a significant opportunity for the state’s financial growth. This avenue deserves the governor’s attention by ensuring the peace of the state which will bring about economic prosperity for taxpayers, instead of being sidetracked by detractors, facile bootlickers and hangers-on.

    The current Rivers State Executive Council comprises accomplished individuals, many with impressive records prior to joining the government. It would be unfortunate to squander their potential due to leadership indecision. His Excellency must awaken to the need to ignore distractions from former adversaries who now profess deceitful support. Over time, their true intentions will become evident. The recent reconciliation between the APC and PDP in the state underscores the governor’s need for cautious navigation and to avoid being misled by unreliable sources who cannot even secure votes in their own communities.

    The governor’s hypocritical approach ensures that the Ijaw delegation’s visit achieved absolutely nothing, except that it has extended the road to travel before peace can be achieved and further exposed the ethnic colouration that Fubara and his co-travellers have given to this crisis. It is important to remind the governor and his “asawana” horde that those who sow the wind will surely reap the whirlwind.

    On April 8, 2024, Ibom Developers commenced its ongoing skill acquisition training programme, with the theme ‘Virtuous Women’ in Egwenwe and Okoroinyong communities.

Osiba (Ijongo IV), the Okaama of Egwenwe Community; Mr. Warribo Isaiah, Community Development Chairman, Egwenwe Community; Pastor Johnson Christian Ubulom, Youth President, Egwenwe Community; Mrs. Catherine Monday Ogbofork, Women Leader of Egwenwe Community; Mrs. Sarah Evans Nfeija, Health Officer, Egwenwe Community; and representatives from Okoroinyong community, were present at the inaugural event.

    This skill acquisition programme aims to empower 160 women in these communities with expertise in catering, packaging, hairdressing, wigging, ventilation, and styling. The program took place from April 8 to April 20, 2024, at Egwenwe Town Hall and Okoroinyong Town Hall in Eastern Obolo LGA, Akwa Ibom State, imparting essential entrepreneurial skills to the women in the communities.

    During the inaugural event, Chief Johnson J. Osiba (Ijongo IV), the Okaama of Egwenwe Community, expressed, ‘‘This empowerment initiative will provide our women with the autonomy and decision-making power they need to become self-sufficient contributors to the growth and development of our community.’’

    The participation of women in several economic activities makes their upliftment a potent strategy for economic growth. Their involvement expands the workforce, cultivating heightened innovation and efficiency within the community.

    Mrs. Catherine Monday Ogbofork, Women Leader of Egwenwe Community, emphasised, “Access to training tailored to the needs of women allow them to develop specialised skills. I am glad that this programme has offered options that suit our women’s preferences and goals.’’

    ‘Constitutional error’ may threaten APC reconciliation move in Delta, says legal expert

    The reconciliation efforts of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Delta State led by the founding leader, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, may be in jeopardy due to an alleged constitutional breach by the party Chairman, Elder Omeni Sobotie, in constituting the Committee.

    A top Delta APC legal expert, Barr. Michael Ukusare, in a letter to Sobotie claimed the formation of an “Expanded State Caucus” which appointed Emerhor was unconstitutional as the APC constitution does not provide for such a caucus.

    Ukusare warned that any action from the committee could face credibility issues.

    The letter copied to Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, former APC Governorship candidate; Olorogun O’tega Emerhor (Founding Leader, APC Delta State); Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) and Senator Joel Onowakpo-Thomas (Delta South) with several party leaders and head of security agencies dated May 4, highlighted the party gains in the 2023 elections winning two senatorial seats and eight federal and state legislative seats.

    Ukusare pointed out that the breach could undermine reconciliation efforts aimed at consolidating these gains if left unaddressed.

    The letter reads: “Dear Sir, NEED FOR URGENT CORRECTION OF A MAJOR CONSTITUTIONAL ERROR UPON WHICH OLOROGUN O’TEGA EMERHOR’S RECONCILIATION AND PEACE EFFORTS ARE BUILT:

    1. I write as a bonafide member, stakeholder and leader of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Uvwie Local Government Area. I have the regular honour of playing significant roles in protecting the interests of our party, including pro bono court appearances as its legal counsel. I do these because I have faith in the fundamentals of our party’s progressive ideology.

    2. Sir, as you are aware my last successful court outing for the party at the instance of our Leader and Deputy President of the 9th Senate of the Republic, His Excellency, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, CFR is the only reason why the present State, Local Government and Ward Executives of the party in Delta State are still in office today. This was in the case of Iyekekpolor Goodluck & 9 Ors v. APC, Elder Omeni Sobotie & 13 Ors (Suit No. A/78/2023) where the judgment was delivered in favour of APC on the 8th day of February 2024 by the Delta State High Court. I am therefore in a vantage position to speak to protect our common interest, especially from a legal standpoint.

    3. Media reports have it that you presided over the meeting of a so-called ‘Expanded State Caucus’ of the APC in Delta State that appointed our highly respected founding leader of the Delta State APC, Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, CON as the Chairman of a Reconciliation Committee to lead efforts for peace in the party. By a published press release supposed made by Olorogun Emerhor few days ago partly announcing his said appointment by the said ‘Expanded State Caucus’, I am further aware that he is ready to lead the party’s desire to increase its strengths by building much-needed post-election harmony and peace following our major successes and regrettable denials in the 2023 general elections.

    4. Mr. Chairman, I speak objectively of “major successes” in the sense that this is the first time since 1999 that an opposition party was able to easily clinch two (2) senatorial seats in Delta State. Our party also won eight (8) seats in both the House of Representatives and the Delta State House of Representatives combined.

    5. Although we were regrettably denied a clear victory in the 2023 Delta State Governorship Election, a match of the lawful votes cast at the election with the spirit and letters of the new national electoral reforms has led to a reasoned consensus by a great many that the election was clearly won by our leader, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege. This denial notwithstanding, the final electoral outcomes, as adjudged by the judiciary as our final electoral arbiter, attest to the incontestable fact that the APC made its strongest electoral impact in Delta State in 2023.

    6. Going by this, it is undoubtedly well-advised to take proper steps to build on our 2023 successes rather than allow anyone within the party to rubbish our gains and make it difficult to make even better gains in the future. Like all responsible leaders of the APC, I am therefore wholly aligned with any lawful effort to give the party greater traction to succeed, starting with genuine reconciliation and cementing of all possible cracks within its ranks, where there are any.

    7. Sir, as founding leader of the party in Delta State, the respected Olorogun O’tega Emerhor, CON is unquestionably eminently qualified to help the party to make more progress, peacefully. However, that onerous duty is circumscribed and guided wholly by the Constitution of the party. Any effort supposedly taken by the party outside its constitution is ab initio a nullity because, as we say in law, nobody builds anything on nothing and expects it to stand.

    8. Sir, I wish that Olorogun O’tega succeeds as a peace builder, but he can only do so if a fundamental error committed solely by you as the State Chairman in calling for and chairing the meeting of the body not recognised by the constitution of the party is immediately rectified by the State Executive Committee that is imbued with the power to do so, otherwise, we are heading to a dead constitutional end.

    9. Sir, you clearly, absolutely and corruptly abused the powers of your office under the party’s constitution and acted in gross violation of the same when you unilaterally called and chaired an illegitimate so-called ‘Expanded State Caucus’ meeting of the party in Asaba on the 22nd day of April 2024. This is a serious breach of the party’s constitution but one is not inclined to focus on this breach.

    10. There is nothing like an ‘Expanded State Caucus’ in the entirety of the APC’s Constitution and nobody can contest this naked factual reality. The appellation ‘Expanded State Caucus’ is alien to the APC Constitution and its operation. Article 11, paragraph B(ii) of the APC Constitution clearly provides for a State Caucus, as an organ of the party, not a ‘Expanded State Caucus’. Yes, I have tremendous respect for all leaders who attended or participated in that meeting, but the Constitution defines the limit of our respect for people and processes.

    11. Nobody, including you Sir, has the arbitrary power and authority to unilaterally expand the party’s constitution. Doing so is a breach of the constitution itself for which appropriate sanctions ought to easily apply or a legal challenge ought to be initiated by stakeholders following due process, but these are not of interest to peace lovers like me, at least for now. The focus is strictly on abiding obedience to the constitution.

    12. Sir, maybe to avoid dictatorship, our party’s constitution unequivocally delineates the composition of the State Caucus in Article 12, paragraph 10, leaving no room for ambiguity or whimsical, subjective interpretations. The only appointments to the State Caucus allowed under Article 12.10 of the party is the inclusion of two (2) women per Senatorial District (a total of 6 women) and this must be done collectively by the State Executive Committee (SEC), not one individual like you did. No SEC meeting was held before the so-called Expanded State Caucus meeting to co-opt the 6 women into the State Caucus, and this says much on this point.

    13. Sir, clearly, to the extent that your so-called ‘Expanded State Caucus’ meeting of April 22, 2024, at Asaba was actually attended by persons who are not recognized by the constitution as ‘State Caucus’ members, you blatantly violated the party’s constitution and same ought to be urgently corrected by the State Executive Committee (SEC).

    14. In this circumstance, it is strongly advised and warned that the SEC ought to and should urgently meet to constitute the Emerhor much-needed Reconciliation and Peace Committee lawfully and properly to do its job without any fear of collectively being trashed in either an administrative or judicial bin.

    Sir, my sole interest is the success of Olorogun Emerhor’s peace-building efforts as a respected leader of the Party, subject to the party’s constitution and the law.”

    Senator Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) has expressed sadness over the sudden death of the 2923 governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Delta State, Olorogun Barr Kenneth Gbagi, FNIM OON.

    Gbagi, a former Minister of Education,  industrialist, a renowned criminologist and senior lawyer, died on Saturday at 62.

    The Delta Central lawmaker, while reacting to the incident, commiserated with the Gbagi family, Oginigbo people, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Urhobo nation and Delta State over the irreparable loss of a great Deltan.

    Dafinone said: “It is with a heavy heart that I, Senator Ede Dafinone, representing the esteemed people of Delta Central Senatorial District, extend my deepest condolences to the Gbagi family, of Oginigbo, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Urhobo Nation, friends, and associates on the passing of Olorogun Barr. Kenneth Gbagi at 62 years old.

    “The news of Olorogun Barr. Kenneth Gbagi’s demise on May 4th, 2024, has left us all in deep sorrow. His passing represents not just the loss of a remarkable individual but also the departure of an iconic figure in the Urhobo Nation, a distinguished lawyer, an astute industrialist, and a former Minister of Education.
