Listen to #ENDSARS protesters, Idahosa tells Buhari

By Bisi Olaniyi, Southsouth Bureau Chief

The Archbishop of the Church of God Mission International (CGMI), Margaret Idahosa, has pleaded with President Muhammadu Buhari to accede to the demands of #ENDSARS protests.

She said this will assuage the protesters and preserve the nation from the already-tensed polity.

The cleric said the #ENDSARS were simply expressing disgust over years of neglect and bad governance, calling on the President to shift demands and meet their demands.

Idahosa, in a statement by the church’s Director of Administration, Odemwingie Okundaye, said: “We have watched with keen interest, the events in our nation and it behoves on us as a church to speak for the oppressed, to stand for good governance, equity and the sanctity of life.

“This is so, because the church is a microcosm of the society and a conglomerate of diverse backgrounds.

“CGMI cannot keep silent and watch the lives of our youths wasted by those who have been entrusted with the responsibility of protecting them.

“We will like to commiserate with the families of the people who lost their lives before and during the protests. Jesus Christ died for humanity and He will love to see all men saved and not perish.

“Every great nation can point at sometimes in their history when through a struggle, they transitioned into greatness. We believe that the present agitations go beyond just reforming the police, which is just a symptom of the deplorable state of our polity.

“The agitations are as a result of the long years of neglect and insensitivity of leadership, arising from bad governance, impunity, abject poverty, and extra-judicial killings, among others, in our nation.

“It is our sincere desire to see positive measures in the approaches of government at addressing the critical issues.”

The cleric assured the church would continue to uphold the nation and leaders in prayers, stressing Nigerians would triumph over the present challenges.

Diri hails Buhari for debt repayment to states

     Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

BAYELSA State Governor Douye Diri has hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his efforts to reimburse some state governments for funds used in executing federal projects in their states.

He spoke when he received members of the National Assembly Joint Committee on Local and Foreign Debts at the Government House in Yenagoa.

The governor, represented by his deputy, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, noted that the gesture would enable state governments to redouble their collaborative efforts in addressing the infrastructural deficits in the country.

A statement yesterday by the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Deputy Governor, Mr Doubara Atasi, said most state governments were discouraged from deploying their scarce resources to fix dilapidated federal projects located in their areas due to Federal Government’s reluctance towards repayment.

Speaking to reporters shortly after conducting members of the National Assembly round some federal projects, including the Ekoli Bridge along the Yenagoa-Oporoma Road, he expressed optimism that the inspection visit would facilitate the release of funds owed the state.

While thanking the joint committee for the visit, he urged the executive and judicial arms of the government to accord the legislature its pride of place in the scheme of democratic governance.

According to the governor, democracy cannot survive without the legislative arm performing its core functions of lawmaking, oversight and representation in society.

Diri said: “The National Assembly is a very important institution which has not been given due attention and respect in this country because they see them as new entrants into the Nigerian hemisphere of governance.

“But they should not forget that if there is no lawmaking, no oversight and no representation, then there will be no democracy. It is on these three pillars that democracy actually stands.

“I believe that the National Assembly is the highest institution that must be respected by all. Having been part of that institution, we will continue to give it respect.

Anambra community protests alleged land encroachment

     Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

THE people of Ifite Umueri community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State on Monrday protested alleged encroachment on their land by the state government.

The community had donated portion of its land to the government for cargo airport, but alleged that the government had gone beyond the allocated portion.

The protesting three communities of Umuopu, Enuagu and Umuina Ifite Umueri, who made bonfire and blocked the road to the airport with placards, described the government action as a deliberate attempt to impoverish the people, who were predominantly farmers.

Some of the placards read: “We can’t be refugees and IDPs in our own land, Obiano leave our land for us”; “We’re farmers why collect our land to build housing estate”; “Anambra State government go to the portion of land given for the airport.”

Addressing reporters after the protest, the Chairman of Ifite Umueri Community, Chief Uchenna Ndumuanya, claimed that they gave the government 729.60 hectares for the airport project, but regretted that it had taken over 1901 hectares.

He lamented government adamant attitude in taking their land without consultations despite letters written to its officials, members of the House of Representatives and senators from the three zones of the state to complain against the encroachment.

Ndumuanya said: “We want to believe that the encroachment is not only to impoverish our people by the Governor Willie Obiano-led administration, but also an extension on the old acrimony between the Aguleri and Umueri communities. Some people are still engaged in that fight.

“If it is not an extension of the fight between Umueri and Aguleri, why will a community give 729.60 hectares and the government has taken 1901 hectares and they were reminded with protests, yet they ignored us?”

“Now they have abandoned the major road to the airport, which is through Umueri road, and developing the Nteje road they connected to the airport. The airport is in Umueri, but you cannot see anything to indicate that the project is in Umueri.

“The government know what they are doing. They want to make us refugees in our land.”

Amaechi urges unity in Southeast, Southsouth

    Agency Reporter

MINISTER of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi has urged the people from Southeast and Southsouth to work together to enable them foster growth in the region.

Amaechi, in a statement to reporters yesterday, made the call during an interactive session with the Southeast, Southsouth Professionals of Nigeria (SESSPN) in Lagos.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that SESSPN invited the minister to address some concerns of the people, which included security, power, economic and social integration and representation in government.

Amaechi said: “We fight a lot among ourselves. In Southsouth and Southeast we fight among ourselves. I’m saying this so that we can separate emotions from reality.

“Today, it is not about President Muhammadu Buhari. It is about us. This administration is doing a lot, but because it is President Buhari, we pretend not to see it.

“We complain about lopsided appointments. Apart from the area of security, have you checked other areas side by side?

“The President will appoint someone from the Southeast and people from the same region will fight against the appointment. If you are the President, how will you feel?

“When we took office, the President asked us to complete all projects left by previous administrations before starting new ones. We did that and it was across all regions.

“We completed Port Harcourt Airport, we are working on Enugu Airport; Enugu-Onitsha road, work is going on, no matter how slow.

“The second Niger bridge in Onitsha is 48 per cent completed and we have assured the country that by 2022 it will be completed.”

On rail projects, Amaechi said: “What informs my decision of choosing which rail line to construct at any point in time is the economics of the project.

“And currently, the economics show that Lagos to Kano has the capacity to move 30 million tonnes of cargo per year. I do the same analysis for Port Harcourt to Maiduguri, 11 million tonnes. We are currently doing the analysis for Lagos to Calabar to know how many tonnes of cargo can be moved there per year. So we started with the Lagos to Kano rail.”

CROSS River State Governor Ben Ayade has tendered an apology to the people of the state and lawyers in particular for the delay, which lasted for 48 days, before a Chief Judge was sworn in to head the judiciary.

The governor spoke at the State Executive chambers yesterday when he swore in Justice Eyo Effiom Ita as the acting Chief Judge.

The swearing-in of Justice Ita was done by the governor in a brief ceremony before a group of concerned lawyers in the state led a protest to the Governor’s Office demanding that the governor should rather do the right thing by swearing in a substantive Chief Judge.

He apologised to the people of the state and lawyers for the delay in the appointment of a new chief judge, saying the state was waiting for communication from the National Judicial Council (NJC).

The governor said the ceremony was taking place because the NJC had Wednesday last week taken a decision “that the next in ranking be appointed as Acting Chief Judge.”

AKWA Ibom Oil Producing Community Development Network (AKIPCON) has hailed House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila for constituting an Ad Hoc Committee to investigate oil spills in oil producing states.

The Speaker had ordered oil companies operating in the country to submit their oil spills reports to the Ad Hoc Committee on Oil Spill Clean-Up and Remediation in the Oil Producing States for investigation.

AKIPCON said the probe was a good move to bring sanity to the affected areas as well as ensure a clean and sustainable environment for the well-being of Niger Delta region’s residents.

In a statement yesterday in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, AKIPCON President General Dr. Ufot Phenson also called for oil spill clean-up and remediation in the oil producing states.

“The host communities of the oil producing states, which suffer the harmful economic activities of oil companies (oil spills, gas flaring and emissions, toxic waste dumping, gas leakage and emissions, etc), should be invited to make their representations and or calls for memoranda from oil producing communities. This is to enable the House to have a balanced and on-the-spot reports/information that will help the committee’s investigation.

“The terms of reference of the ad hoc committee to investigate oil spill cleanup and remediation in oil producing states should be amended to include details on compensation payments by oil companies to the victims to alleviate their prolonged suffering.

Delta 2023: I’m not scheming against ‘Urhobo’ Governor – Commissioner

    By Elo Edremoda, Warri

Commissioner for Special Duties, Government House, Asaba in Delta Chief Henry Sakpra has denied scheming to thwart the hopes for an Urhobo indigene to emerge as Governor in 2023.

He told reporters in Ekete, Udu council area of Delta those peddling such information are only seeking to drag his political career in the mud and pitch him against Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

Sakpra, while addressing members of the Urhobo Youths Leaders Association (UYLA), assured he is not ignorant of the gubernatorial “rotation arrangement” of the state, which tilts towards Delta Central, the Urhobo populated senatorial district.

“The matter is nothing but a malicious and dangerously concocted tale by moonlight to the effect that I was working to undermine the interest of the Urhobo nation in the 2023 gubernatorial polls by aligning forces with those outside Delta Central, with intention of being running mate to some gubernatorial tendencies.

“As a politician of note in Delta state and a serving member of the State Executive Council, I cannot be ignorant of the rotation arrangement in place which gravitate the position of governor to Delta Central in 2023.

“As an illustrious Urhobo son, nothing gladdens my heart better than the opportunity for an Urhobo to yet again produce the governor of Delta state.

“These rumours are characterised by strong underlying political subterfuge, thoughtless strategies and technically unsound infantile tantrums designed to drag me on the path of infamy.

“The promoters of this propaganda against my interest are working with political war-lords from within and outside our political party to whip up sentiments against me in order to bring me down,” the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain stated.

Activists to National Assembly: don’t abandon NDDC probe report

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

The Niger Delta Rights Advocates (NDRA) has warned the National Assembly against sacrificing its report on the Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), on the altar of executive-legislative cooperation.

Speaking in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, NDRA spokesman Darlington Nwauju urged Senate President Ahmed Lawan to ensure the implementation of recommendations of the Senator Olubunmi Adetumbi ad-hoc committee, which probed the IMC.

He recalled that the committee, among other things, recommended the dissolution of the IMC and the refund of N4.925billion extra-budgetary expenditure made by the Prof. Keme Pondei-led IMC.

Nwauju said they would embark on protest to shut down the National Assembly complex if the lawmakers attempted to jettison their report.

Read Also: ‘Don’t let NDDC IMC run 2020 budget’

He said: “It is our considered opinion that given the fact that the National Asembly has made far-reaching decisions, which include but not restricted to the dissolution of the IMC, it will amount to disrespect for Section 88(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) from where the National Assembly drew its powers to oversight the NDDC if the recommendations are abandoned.

“In addition to this indubitable fact, the National Assembly would have made a caricature of the doctrine of the separation of powers under a constitutional democracy, if the much-publicised recommendations of the National Assembly are abandoned or set aside or swept under the carpet in the guise of cooperating with the executive arm of the government.

“So far, the inaction of the National Assembly over the illegal contraption in the name of an IMC amounts to a grave conspiracy of silence, which shortchanges the overall interest of the people of the Niger Delta.

“The doctrine of fair representation captured in our operational laws has been ignored as the Niger Delta is made up of nine oil-producing states, which require equal representation on the board and management of the NDDC.

“The NDRA demands once again that the National Assembly communicates its position on this matter, as we shall not hesitate to shut down the National Assembly complex through massive protest if the current IMC or any IMC for that matter attempts to represent the region on any budgetary matter either by submitting, defending or operating the NDDC budget forthwith.”
