Otti who recently formalised his members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, was said to have had compassion on the inmates and asked the management of the hospital to send him the bills of patients that have been treated and unable to settle their hospital bills.

Some of the patients, according to information, have spent over three months in the hospital after being discharged due to their inability to offset their medical bills.

Combating child bride, illiteracy menaces in Edo State

    By Precious Igbonwelundu

WHEN 14-year-old Memunatu Musa, a pupil of Enikaro Primary School in Benin City, Edo State, was forced into marriage to a 50-year-old man in Katsina State, her dreams of going to school and becoming a career woman suffered setback.

Like many young girls her age forced into early marriages in different parts of the country, Musa could have become a child producing machine and put at risk of Vesicovaginal Fistula (VVF), but for last year’s intervention of the Edo State Government which rescued her from Katsina and reintegrated her into the school system through Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (EdoBEST) programme.

Musa is one of 33 percent of young girls married off before they turn 18 years in Benin. This statistics, according to social advocacy group, #GirlsNotBrides, comprised 26 percent married off before their 18th birthday and seven per cent forced into marriage before they turn 15.

These children who are made to abandon school, contribute to the over 13 million estimated out of school boys and girls across the country.

Faced with this challenge, the administration of Governor Godwin Obaseki embarked on a mission to change the narrative with training and equipping teachers for improved learning outcomes, as well as the reconstruction of schools. This move has seen well over 8,700 teachers trained and 7,094  equipped with computer tablets which have positively impacted more than 150,000 school children in the state, while no fewer than 234 schools have received facelift and 11,688 School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) members trained to help in administering and maintaining public education facilities all geared towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all).

Commending the EdoBest initiative, the World Economic Forum (WEF) in a recent publication on its official website noted it has improved learning outcomes among pupils in primary schools across the state.

It said: “Education experts around the world and across Africa, in particular, are paying close attention to EdoBEST, which has become a beacon of light to other education ministries because it is improving learning for marginalised children and up-skilling both novice and experienced teachers at scale, within existing state budgets and without western aid.”

Similarly, the World Bank, and the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) also highlighted EdoBEST as a crucial programme that can be a template for transforming education  in educationally disadvantaged societies. Hence, it did not come as a surprise when the World Bank recently approved a $75million facility to Edo State to help address issues of education development.

Speaking during a rally, Obaseki assured the people that would be utilised to change the face of education in Edo and Nigeria for the next three years.

He said the intervention fund would help to expand the existing EdoBEST programme from basic education to secondary level as well as reset the state’s tertiary education system on the path of progress.

“What this means is that over the next three years, we will have about N40 billion to utilise in changing the face of education in Edo and Nigeria. This is because of the fantastic work which members of our team have undertaken in the past few years to show the world what we can do with our educational system.

“It will interest you to know that this facility will help us at the secondary school level to do what we have started doing at the basic education level so that by the time a child has gone through five years of learning, that child will be exposed not only to learning and literacy but also to a vocation. This is the last time in our history that our education system will produce Agberos,” said Obaseki.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Crusoe Osagie, many states within Nigeria and some African countries have sent delegations to Edo to understudy the EdoBEST programme.

Don’t contemplate state of emergency for S’East, Igbo group advises military

Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide, has advised the Nigerian Army to shun any plan to declare state of emergency in the  South East.

The group in statement by the National President, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and the Secretary General,  Mazi Okwu Nnabuike the group said: “The recent proclamations of Nigerian military that any more evidence of killings of security agents by Biafra agitators in the Southeast region could lead to declaration of State of Emergency is an affront on the people of the region and a calculated attempt to create confusion and tension in the zone in as much  as we are not in support of any killings of Igbos and security agents in South East.

    Ohanaeze Ndigbo

We had urged the military to concentrate on tackling the insecurity challenges in the Northern region where bandits and terrorist organisations like Boko Haram insurgents had wreaked havoc and fear amongst the people.  We urge Nigerian Army to declare State of Emergency in the North East before thinking of Southeast.

Igbo youths wish to categorically advise Biafra agitators to maintain  their original nonviolence postures and avoid making inflammatory threats of killings security agents in reprisal attacks. Such decision will surely bring catastrophic consequences to the peaceful atmospheric environment we enjoy in the Southeast.

Olu of Warri calls for completion of abandoned Koko-Ogheye Road in Delta

    By Elo Edremoda, Warri

His Majesty, Ogiame Ikenwoli, the Olu of Warri, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure funds are available for the continuation of the Koko-Ogheye Road project, kick-started by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), in 2010.

The traditional ruler while on an on-the-spot inspection of the 15.4 kilometre- road project in Koko, the administrative headquarters of Warri North council area of Delta State, noted that there would  be many economic gains for residents, private firms, as well as government, on completion.

The monarch further expressed dissatisfaction with the contractor handling a shore protection project in the old port town, calling for the termination of the job, which is reportedly being executed by a company linked to a seating South East governor.

Lamenting the decade-long abandonment of the project, the monarch disclosed that the project was conceptualised far back in 1955 in the national master plan as a coastal road leading to Nigeria’s commercial hub, Lagos State.

Ogiame said, “I’m very happy I have been able to come and inspect this project. The project has been long, since 1955 actually. From the survey, we know that the work can be done from here to Ogheye.

“This is a very critical community in our kingdom, but it didn’t start until recently, when Levant got the job. We want to appeal to government to fund Levant, so that they can continue with the job and move back to site. As you can see, the site has been abandoned because there is no funding.

“Additionally, this road is going to open the neighbouring communities to a lot of projects. By the time this project is finalized, maybe to a dual carriageway, it will be better for not only Itsekiri communities, but my Ijaw brothers from Egbema kingdom.

  • NDDC rejects additional N1.5bn fees to scholarship students

NDDC rejects additional N1.5bn fees to scholarship students

    By Mike Odiegwu, Port Harcourt

The Interim Management Committee (IMC) of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has rejected ongoing pressure to pay additional N1.5bn ($3m) to some scholarship students abroad, who said they were not covered by the commission’s initial payment.

While it was gathered that the aggrieved students were planning to stage a protest in London over the omission, the NDDC in a statement signed by its Director, Corporate Affairs, Charles Odili, said it would not pay additional money without proper verification.

Odili said the planned protest in the United Kingdom, “by certain individuals and hirelings, most of whom are masquerading as the commission’s scholars, over nonpayment of the scholarship fund,” was part of an ongoing campaign, orchestrated by powerful individuals he described as part of the systemic corruption uncovered by the IMC, in the administration of the Foreign Postgraduate Scholarship.

He explained that in 2018, the commission paid $900,000 to its scholars adding that in 2019, the amount paid by the NDDC rose to $3.5million.

He said recently, the IMC paid $5.99m to cover all the verified obligations to the scholars wondering why “there is a demand for an additional payment of $3million bringing the total to “an alarming $9million”.

Read Also: NDDC IMC member escapes assassination in Rivers

He insisted that the motive of the planned protest was dubious, mischievous, underhand and potentially criminal.

He said: “Some of the important questions everyone must ask are: why is the amount paid to cover our obligations to this foreign scholarship programme rising astronomically? Where are all these demands coming from? What do they cover? Who are behind them? It is important to note that since the establishment of the IMC, no scholarship has been awarded, due to the ongoing forensic audit. So why is the IMC being blackmailed, threatened, cajoled and intimidated to make these payments, without verification?

“Since the institution of the forensic audit by President Muhammadu Buhari, the IMC has uncovered a culture of rampant corruption and abuse in the commission. Many very powerful individuals who benefited from the years of sleaze have been on the attack.

“Their unfortunate mission, which is against the directives of President Buhari and the dream and expectations of the people of the Niger Delta region, of a Commission that can finally and efficiently address their long years of neglect and poverty, is simple: to frustrate, scuttle and undermine the forensic audit, as well as cause the disbandment of the IMC.

“These frightened elements are fighting to ensure that the Federal Government is not able to unearth the culture of wanton abuse and corruption that necessitated the forensic audit. They are waging a failing battle to stop the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, as well as the IMC, from uncovering the massive abuse of the commission that has made it impossible for this interventionist agency to meet its mandate to the Niger Delta region.

“Their looting of the commonwealth of the Niger Delta region has further impoverished the people, making the region littered with abandoned or poorly executed projects and programmes, and a graveyard of the people’s dreams.”

He, however, said that no amount of blackmail and intimidation would stop the IMC from getting to the roots of the looting and corruption in the commission.

He said: “The IMC wishes to restate that no amount of blackmail, threats, personal, political and media intimidation, as well as the unwholesome machinations of these characters and their paid allies on the backstreets of London will stop the IMC from getting to the roots of the looting and corruption.

“Consequently, and as part of its investigations, the IMC and relevant officers of the Commission will undertake a long-planned and approved trip to United Kingdom this September, to verify these obvious and unexplained discrepancies in the commission’s foreign postgraduate scholarship programme.

“During this trip, which was planned to happen earlier in April, 2020, the commission’s team will visit the universities where our scholars are studying for various Masters and Doctorate degrees.

“We strongly believe that these planned protest aims to scare the Commission from undertaking this very necessary and vital verification. The Commission will not be intimidated or cowed.

“It is the objective of the Federal Government to stop unscrupulous characters, no matter how powerful they are, from reaping where they did not sow, and undermining the capacity and moral authority of the Commission to fulfil its mandate of regional sustainable development.”
