“For us as a government, we want the people of Bayelsa to remain healthy. Anything we can prevent, we start to prevent it, and we believe in joining hands with all of the agencies that are in charge of these.

“We will be able to stop the influx of those kinds of things. The ones we have seen, we have confiscated; they are even being arrested.

“Some of these harmful chemicals that are injected or added to fake drugs, soft drinks, or wine have direct effects on the liver, kidney, and even the lungs.”

APC stakeholders call for Minister’s sack over alleged anti-party activities

Stakeholders of the All Progressives Congress(APC) from 29 out of the 31 local government areas of Akwa Ibom state have called for the sack of the Minister for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo over alleged anti party activities.

Under the aegis of ‘Dedicated Members of the APC’, they expressed worry that Ekpo was alienating founding members of the party and working at cross-purposes with Senate President Godswill Akpabio in his alleged bid to become governor.

In a petition addressed to President Bola Tinubu in Uyo on Monday, the stakeholders called for Ekpo’s replacement with someone more attuned to the ideals of the APC.

Signatories to the petition are: Rt Hon Michael Essien(Ini),Obong Anthony John(Itu), Comrade Victor Okon(Uruan), Pst David Udoh(Ibiono Ibom), Lawrence Edet(Uyo), David Linus(Ibesikpo Asutan), Asua Effiong(Etinan) and Vincent Etuk(Nsit Atai).

Others are Samuel Samuel(Abak), Emmanuel  Chris(Ika), Iniemem Effiong(Ikot Ekpene),Edidiong Okon(Mkpat Enin), Steve Udofia(Ikot Abasi), Raphael Charles(Eastern Obolo), Nse Akpabio(Onna) among others.

The statement reads in part: “We, the dedicated members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State, write to reiterate our call for the sack of Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas), Rt. Hon. Ekperikpe Ekpo.

“Our previous letter to you on this matter was met with a laughable response from the Minister, which only further exposes his true intentions and actions that are detrimental to the party’s unity and progress in our state.

“As you are aware, the Minister’s actions since assuming office in 2023 have been nothing short of disastrous for our party in Akwa Ibom State. Rather than working to rally party members to support your second-term bid and strengthen our party’s structures in the state, he has been busy creating factions, sidelining, and ostracizing those who do not support his 2031 gubernatorial ambition.

“This behavior is a clear manifestation of his selfish interests and lack of commitment to the party’s ideals”.

They added: “Rather than working together to advance the cause of our party in Akwa Ibom State, the Minister is busy pursuing his personal interests at the expense of party unity and cohesion.

“In light of these developments, we insist that the Minister is a liability to your administration and a curse to our party in Akwa Ibom State. His actions are unbecoming of a public servant and a leader in our party.

“We urge you to take immediate action to address this situation and restore the integrity of our party.

“Moreover, it is imperative that the next Minister of Petroleum Resources (Gas) for Akwa Ibom State is someone who will foster unity and cohesion between the Senate President and the Governor, rather than someone who will sow seeds of discord between the two top leaders of our party in the state.

“The current Minister’s actions have not only undermined the working relationship between these key leaders but have also created an atmosphere of distrust and division within our party” the release stated.

They maintained that they need a minister who will work collaboratively with the Senate President and the Governor to advance the interests of our party and the people of Akwa Ibom State, rather than pursuing personal agendas that are detrimental to the collective progress of the state and the party.

Warri youths’ clash: Oborevwori, UPU, others sue for peace

Amid growing concerns over weekend’s clash between the Itsekiri and Urhobo youths in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta State, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has appealed for calm, restraint, and peaceful coexistence among stakeholders in the area.

The Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), and its youth wing, as well as the Warri Rebirth Initiative, also joined the call for the warring parties to sheathe their swords.

In an official statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, the governor urged residents of the oil-rich city to avoid any actions capable of threatening the hard-earned peace and stability in the region.

“We appeal to stakeholders to support our efforts in revitalising infrastructure in Warri and avoid all acts capable of truncating the current peace in the oil-rich city,” Oborevwori said.

He said peace remained critical for economic growth and the ongoing development initiatives in Warri, assuring citizens that the state government was committed to inclusive governance and equitable development.

“The reported clash between our people and our neighbouring Itsekiri tribe is not palatable, as we have lived in peace with them for centuries.

“We want to implore stakeholders to sheathe their sword and embrace peace as it is the best way forward.

“However, we wish to maintain that we are studying the matters on discourse and we are ready to do everything to protect our people no matter what and we are no longer ready to stand and watch these incessant attacks repeat themelves again.”

UPU urged Urhobo indigenes to remain calm and law-abiding, reiterating their trust in Governor Oborevwori’s peaceful leadership.

In a separate statement, the UPU Youth Wing Worldwide, under the leadership of Activist Ughere Blessed, also called for calm and peaceful engagement between Urhobo and Itsekiri communities.

Spokesman for the body, Comrade Aboyi Lawson, stressed the importance of unity for lasting development.

“True progress and sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of peace. The Urhobo and Itsekiri have lived together as brothers for generations, and it is important that this bond of peaceful coexistence continues to reign,” Lawson stated.

He called on the state government and security agencies to increase their presence and efforts in Warri South to prevent a relapse into violence.

  • Niger Delta Blue Economy: Between potentials and possibilities, by Uche Igwe

Niger Delta Blue Economy: Between potentials and possibilities, by Uche Igwe

Last weekend, I visited Ayakoro community in Bayelsa State to attend the birthday thanksgiving service in honour of the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

The experience was unique and brought me exciting memories. As we drove along, I momentarily fell asleep as a result of the cool weather. Apparently, my driver had missed his way again because he refused to wake me up. As I opened my eyes, I saw a sign that indicated that we were in Oloibiri, which is a notable community where the oil that fuels our national economy was first discovered in a commercial quantity many years ago.

The picture clicked instantly. Thereafter, we saw a construction site that the villagers said was an oil museum project undertaken by the federal government. The residents later directed us towards another nearby community known as Otueke, where former President Goodluck Jonathan comes from. We then advanced further to a community called Onuebum before crossing over by boat to Ayakoro.

Despite the huge potential, few conversations are happening. I was intrigued by the network of creeks, rivers and rivulets as we travelled along, although many of them appeared heavily polluted. The short boat ride provided an opportunity for me to reflect on the potential of the blue economy in Bayelsa State, in particular, and the Niger Delta region as a whole.

As I spent time thinking about the experience, I wondered why very few conversations are happening on this issue in Nigeria, yet far-reaching innovations are being shaped from the oceans elsewhere in the world. Blue economy is the sustainable use of marine resources for economic growth, job creation and improvement of livelihoods while protecting marine and coastal ecosystems. It encompasses a range of activities such as fisheries, tourism, offshore energy, shipping, and marine biotechnology, among others.

In the Niger Delta, the picture we have about our rivers and oceans is one of disasters, flooding, boat mishaps, kidnapping, piracy, and oil thefts, as though the negatives are all that our blue economy sector can offer. Yet, there can be many jobs to be created and quantum revenue generated from beneath the surface of our creeks and waterways, from Nembe to Sapele, and from Andoni to Ibeno, and beyond. Strong policies must connect with regional priorities. Despite government efforts and intentions, many Nigerians, including those in the Niger Delta, remain unaware of the potential of the blue economy.

Many aspiring professionals have yet to view the ocean as a viable career path. Policy makers still prefer to operate in traditional silos that hamper their productivity and minimise their impact, disconnected from coastal communities. The national policy on marine and blue economy, recently presented by the government, has been applauded as an initial positive step. However, the government alone cannot do this. Private sector players, development partners and civil society must come together to bring solutions and adapt examples of best practices.

Regional agencies, such as the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and the South-South Development Commission (SSDC), as well as states and other subnational entities, play a crucial role in coordination and effectiveness. The projected target of generating $ 1.5 trillion for the national economy in ten years is a helpful guide. The Niger Delta region is best positioned to lead the way. However, a clear roadmap on how this will happen should be articulated as a matter of urgency. We need to tell our story by ourselves. The blue economy is central to the future of the Niger Delta region. It will strengthen our economy, lessen the burden of youth unemployment, improve food security and support efforts to adapt to climate change. We need to tell our own story; otherwise, no one else will.

We will no longer allow vested interests to hijack the narratives and twist them in furtherance of their interests and objectives. The enormous potentials that exist should be presented alongside clear pathways to overcome existing challenges. The narrative should be presented in comprehensive yet straightforward language that is accessible to diverse audiences. Researchers must now urgently decouple complex marine knowledge into easy-to-comprehend information.

Residents in coastal communities, especially women and youth, should be encouraged to share their stories of experience. That story should not be about risks alone but also about a pragmatic approach towards developing resilience and preserving their livelihoods. It is our responsibility to amplify these coastal voices to ensure that they are heard in decision-making spaces from boardrooms to parliaments. We have another opportunity to do things differently.

Read Also: ‘Blue economy is key to Nigeria’s growth, potential’

Strong voices in the region must take control of the conversation with clarity, urgency and purpose. Otherwise, we may lose the chance to uplift our communities again. Our approach in the Niger Delta should now be deliberately different and optimistic. Islands of progress should be encouraged and celebrated in the sea of past disappointments. The last time was during the oil boom, when we pointed fingers elsewhere to external actors far from ourselves.

We accused multinational oil companies and the parasitic elite. We have another opportunity, and we cannot afford to lose it. This time it will be inexplicable. Revamping more ports will unlock Nigeria’s blue economy, making the Niger Delta the expected hub for national blue economy efforts. Decisive actions must be taken by relevant stakeholders. Multiple informed sources have confirmed that Nigeria’s over-reliance on the port in Lagos has continued to hinder the country’s maritime potential.

Investments in port infrastructure would significantly enhance national development and improve the country’s maritime logistics framework. Revamping more ports in the country will unlock the country’s blue economy. Securing our waterways has become urgent to attract investment in marine transport. Our territorial waters have continued to serve as a haven for unregulated fishing by foreign invaders.

Thinking beyond oil should not be a slogan anymore. It should be translated into a realistic initiative pregnant with possibilities. We have an opportunity to change the course of our national history by leveraging the blue economy promises in the Niger Delta to re-launch our country on a path of sustainable prosperity.

  • Alleged resignation: Youths give Ojulari seven-day ultimatum to quit

Alleged resignation: Youths give Ojulari seven-day ultimatum to quit

•Seek appointment of NNPCL’s GCEO from N/Delta region

Youths under the aegis of the Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum have given the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mr Bashir Bayo Ojulari, one week to vacate office over his alleged resignation recently.

The youths who gave the ultimatum during a world press conference in Abuja, also urged the Federal Government to appoint the GCEO’s replacement from the Niger Delta region.

The text of the press conference was signed by the Chairman, Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Forum and spokesman, Ijaw Youth Council, Sir Jothan Lokpobiri Snr., and the spokesman of the Forum and President-General, Ogoni Youth Federation, Engr. Dr. Legborsi Yamaabana.

The group threatened that failure to accede to its demands may have consequences for the stability and peace in the Niger Delta.

It said the briefing was necessitated by grave concerns over the recent conduct of Ojulari which allegedly threatened the peace and stability of the Niger Delta region.

Reading the text of the press conference, the Chairman of the Forum, Lokpobiri, claimed that Mr. Ojulari allegedly resigned his position on August 2nd, 2025, as the GCEO of NNPCL following allegations of corruption and gross incompetence.

Lokpobiri said: “Shockingly, despite this resignation, he has refused to vacate the office and continues to parade himself illegally as GCEO.

“His actions are not only unlawful but deeply offensive to the oil-producing Niger Delta region and damaging to the reputation of NNPCL.

“We therefore demand that Ojulari vacates the GCEO’s office within seven days. Nigeria cannot afford a national oil company without credible leadership. Since his resignation, NNPCL has been left with a GCEO, drifting without direction.

“For the sake of equity, justice, and national stability, we insist that the next GCEO must come from the Niger Delta region.

“We have many highly qualified, globally respected engineers and technocrats within and outside the NNPCL who can immediately provide effective leadership.

“Beyond vacating office, Ojulari must also face full prosecution. He stands accused of the following:

“Diverting $21 million of NNPCL funds into the private account of his associate, Mr. Bashir Haske — an allegation that has already led to arrests by the EFCC.

“Deliberately shutting down the fully operational Port Harcourt Refinery on May 24th, 2025, with the intent of selling it at scrap value to his cronies, while diverting crude oil allocations as spot cargoes to his allies and illegally sacking over 400 Nigerian youths, including some from the Niger Delta, thereby rendering them jobless and worsening the unemployment crisis in the region.

“This reckless sabotage crippled a refinery that had successfully resumed operations in December 2024, after a turnaround maintenance that cost $1.5 billion of taxpayers’ money.

“At the time, the refinery was running profitably and providing hundreds of jobs and opportunities

“These actions are unforgivable acts of corruption and economic sabotage against both the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole.

“We therefore call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to act without delay by appointing a qualified Niger Delta professional as the new GCEO of NNPCL and ensuring that Bashir Bayo Ojulari is fully investigated and prosecuted for financial crimes and economic sabotage.

“Let it be clear: if these demands are not met within seven days, the Niger Delta youths will be compelled to take decisive mass action. “Such action will have far-reaching consequences for the peace and stability of the region. This is not a threat but a warning born out of deep concern.

“The fragile peace we have worked hard to sustain is now at risk, and as leaders, we cannot stand by and watch it collapse. Enough is enough. Ojulari must go. Justice must prevail.”

Delta APC chairmen score Oborevwori high on performance

The chairmen of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 25 local government areas of Delta State have applauded Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what they described as his outstanding performance in office.

They stressed that his developmental strides and inclusive governance had continued to earn him the pride and respect of Deltans across party lines.

Speaking to journalists on Friday after a meeting with the governor at Government House, Asaba, the APC Chairman of Aniocha South and coordinating chairman of party chairmen in Delta North, Mr. Norbert Sochukwudinma, said the visit was aimed at briefing the governor on developments across their various local government areas.

“We have come to see our father, our amiable governor, the leader of the party in the state, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori. Our meeting with him was fruitful, basically to give him feedback on the goings-on in our LGAs,” Sochukwudinma stated.

According to him, the integration process of the party across the 25 LFAs has reached an advanced stage.

“In our various LGAs, things are going on very well. The integration is fully activated. As a matter of fact, we have crossed 80 percent, and within the next few days we should be running into 90 and 100 percent. All 25 APC local government chairmen were present at this meeting and no one was missing,” he said.

On the strength of the opposition in Delta, Sochukwudinma maintained that the APC remained formidable, adding that no other party posed a real threat.

He stated, “With what we have today, there is no political party in Delta State that is serious or strong enough to challenge us.

“But whether ADC or any other party, we are strong enough to beat them in a free, fair and credible election. There is no cause for alarm.”

He praised Oborevwori for his commitment to infrastructural development, citing completed and ongoing multi-billion-naira projects being executed across the state by reputable contractors.

He added, “Governor Oborevwori has been a known performer. The projects across the state speak for themselves, and he is only getting better.

“Now that he is working directly and closely with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, things are even better than they were before. We are very proud of him, and Deltans are proud of him.”

  • Good governance advocates score Ibas high on critical infrastructure, civil service reforms

Good governance advocates score Ibas high on critical infrastructure, civil service reforms

The National Good Governance Advocates (NGGA) has hailed Rivers Administrator Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.) on the  provision of critical infrastructures and civil service reforms in the state.

They also lauded his transformative leadership and meticulous stewardship of resources, which have driven unprecedented development in the state.

In its detailed report made public at a briefing in Abuja, the NGGA celebrated Ibas for rescuing Rivers from the brink of collapse and restoring stability, security, and public confidence.

The report paints a grim picture of Rivers before Ibas’ appointment on March 18, 2025, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency.

National president, Dr. Abiodun Israel, recounted how suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s administration plunged the state into chaos through “brazen abuse of constitutional norms,” including attempt to declare the seats of 27 elected lawmakers vacant over political differences.

The NGGA noted: “The collapse of democratic institutions had become glaring… laying bare the capriciousness with which the instruments of power had been wielded.

“This was compounded by resurgent militancy and pipeline explosions that threatened Nigeria’s oil-driven economy, creating a dagger aimed at the economic heart of Nigeria.”

Under Ibas’s leadership, however, the group said Rivers has undergone a remarkable transformation.

The NGGA’s report stated: “The pervasive climate of fear that once haunted the streets of Port Harcourt, the markets of Bori, the creeks of Bonny, and the oilfields of Ogoni has been replaced by a resurgent atmosphere of peace and assurance.

”Within a week of his administration, militancy was subdued, pipeline explosions ceased, and oil production stabilized, averting a national economic crisis.”

The report further highlighted that “in less than two weeks into his administration, markets had begun to hum with activity; businesses awakened from forced dormancy; and residents walked streets with that long-absent sense of safety.”

According to the group, Ibas’ achievements extend to governance and infrastructure. The NGGA commended his commitment to democratic restoration, noting his release of funds to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission for the August 30, 2025, local government elections.

“His infrastructural projects include the reconstruction of the Rivers State House of Assembly complex and the completion of the Mother and Child Hospital, integrated into the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital network,” the group added.

The report singled out his oversight of the ₦150 billion Port Harcourt Ring Road dualisation project, stating, “His insistence on transparency and delivery has set a new standard for accountability in Rivers State governance, and we see this as an exemplar of stewardship, not self-interest.”

The NGGA rebutted allegations of contract inflation and treasury looting against Ibas, calling them “fabricated fiction” orchestrated by Fubara and his allies.

The report declared: “The allegations… accusing Admiral Ibas of orchestrating a fraudulent inflation of contracts amounting to nearly half a trillion naira… are nothing short of manufactured stories from the laboratory of political propaganda.”

Looking forward, the NGGA urged continued reforms, including the completion of the House of Assembly reconstruction and the strengthening of security through community policing.

The report emphasised: “Admiral Ibas has laid the foundation; it is the duty of all stakeholders to safeguard and build upon it.”

The NGGA thanked President Tinubu for his timely intervention and praising Ibas’s disciplined leadership, stating, “Let Admiral Ibas not merely be remembered for stabilising a state under emergency, but for designing the foundational stones for its peaceful democratic rebirth.”
