Navy surpassed expectations on fight against crude oil theft – Reps Deputy spokesman

The Deputy spokesman of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, said the Nigerian Navy has surpassed expectations in maritime security, anti-piracy operations and crackdown on oil theft.

Under the visionary leadership of Rear Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, the lawmaker said the Navy has implemented innovative strategies, leveraging technology, intelligence, and collaboration to combat illicit activities.

Agbese commended the Navy’s commitment to protecting the nation’s economic assets, improving revenue and ensuring the security of the Gulf of Guinea.

Speaking in reaction to questions on the House of Reps investigation on crude oil theft in Nigeria, the Congressman who raised the motion last year acknowledged the Navy’s operational efficiency in recent times.

Agbese reckoned that the impact of the Navy’s efforts goes beyond the economic benefits, noting that it has had a significant impact on the environment and the well-being of communities in the Niger Delta region.

Highlighting some of the proof of the Navy’s special amphibious operations to curb crude oil theft and sea robbery in Nigeria’s waters, he added: “Nigeria recorded its highest oil production in almost two years, with crude oil production rising from 1.08 million barrels per day in July 2023 to an average of 1.38 million barrels per day in January and February 2024, representing a 300,000-bpd increase.

“Additionally, Nigeria’s Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) export cargoes have increased from an average of 16 per month in 2023 to 21 monthly in the first quarter of 2024. The Nigerian Navy has also recovered over 62,000 barrels of crude oil, as well as close to a million liters of illegally-refined diesel, petrol and kerosene; valued in total at almost 10 billion Naira.

“The Nigerian Navy has dismantled illegal refining sites, arrested suspects and seized vessels and equipment used for oil theft. The reduction of illegal refining has led to a decrease in oil spills and environmental degradation, which has a positive impact on the livelihoods of people in the region.”

Agbese said the success was a testament to the leadership and commitment of Ogalla and the bravery and dedication of the officers and men of the Nigerian Navy.

He urged the Navy to sustain these efforts and continue to work towards enhancing its capabilities to tackle emerging security challenges in the maritime domain.

  • Ighodalo more qualified to lead Edo– Hon Asekhame, AIM Coordinator

Ighodalo more qualified to lead Edo– Hon Asekhame, AIM Coordinator

·Hon Dan Asekhame is the Founder and Coordinator of the Asue Ighodalo Movement (AIM), one of the many support groups working for the election of Dr Asue Ighodalo, candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the next Edo Governor. In this interview with a select group of journalists, the two-time  Chairman of Owan West Local Government Council, addressed vital questions relating to the coming election. Excerpts:

In setting up this support group, what exactly was your focus or goal?

To do a house to house campaign and to also focus seriously on new voters, that is those who have not been registered before. We want to try and focus on them and ensure they come out to register enmasse and also to try and see what we can do to increase the votes of Asue Ighodalo by organizing our people and talking to them in a door-to-door campaign and street-to-street campaign. Our major focus is to ensure we sensitize people, make sure they come out to register now that the Continuous Voters Registration will start on the 27 and vote for Dr Asue Ighodalo come September 21.

Why are you supporting Asue Ighodalo. Why do you think Ighodalo is the man for the job?

Without being told, if you look at the political set up as it is now in the state in terms of those who are contesting, Asue Ighodalo stands out. I mean without mincing words or any iota of doubt, he is way taller than the others in all aspects. Just by listening to them, you cannot compare any of the other candidates with Asue Ighodalo. He has the experience, he is well exposed. He is somebody who has the capacity to manage the economy of Edo State. We must not hand over our economy to people who are novice to handle. He is someone who has handled very big organisations, who has been able to direct big institutions successfully. Just look at his antecedents and pedigree, everywhere he has been, it has been success stories. So, there is no doubt that he is better by far for the job at stake. I have been with him, he is a very cordial person, very friendly, very calculating and a visionary. If we give him the mantle, I know he will turn the state around. He will be able to continue the good work of Governor Godwin Obaseki. He is somebody with the requisite capacity to lead our state, and that is without doubt. I repeat, without doubt. So, if I have the interest of the state at heart, I believe that I should throw my weight behind the person that will be able to handle the economy and make it work for all.

You said just now that Ighodalo will continue the good works of Governor Obaseki. The opposition is latching on that expression to say Edo people should not vote for Ighodalo. How would you react to that?

Those people who read and interpret our statements like that are deaf and dumb people. These are people who don’t know anything that is going on in the state. If they are not blind and they can see and use their eyes, they would be able to see what Governor Obaseki has done. Look at the state now, look at the ministries, everywhere shining, people happy, everybody working, you don’t work for government now and stay at home, you must be at your work place to clock in and clock out, look at roads, look at the whole place, Upper Adesua, everywhere in the state is opened, all done by Governor Obaseki, look at loan schemes everywhere for traders assisting people to build their businesses and managing our economy and preventing people from dipping their hands into government coffers to grab our money. Big projects and a planned 30 year development vision for the state. These are the pictures I see, Obaseki has done very well. Today, there is decorum and orderliness in the state and all that. If you want to know how Edo State is, drive out of your house in the morning between 8 and 9, you will see the calmness of the state. So, anybody who comes around to say that whoever is coming to build on what Obaseki has done is making a mistake, then that person is blind.  Yes, I will use that word, it means that person is blind and doesn’t know what he is talking about. That person is actually the enemy of the state. We want somebody who will build on what Governor Obaseki has done. I repeat it, we want somebody who will build on what Obaseki has done. That is continuity.

Aren’t you worried about the opposition, especially by the All Progressives Congress (APC)?

No, they are making a joke of themselves. The last one they brought out where their candidate went to one waterlogged area and was saying that “no vehicle can pass here now”, meanwhile as he was talking, a vehicle, an Audi 80 was passing, right there in the video, and he is opening his mouth to say no vehicle can pass. And he said he is an intelligent man? A low car is passing, and you are saying “we have to park our cars so we can use leg cross,” and you are driving a jeep and claiming no vehicle can pass here. You are not yet a governor and you are already lying to the people.  A car is passing, and you are opening your mouth to say no car can pass. That alone tells you the quality of the person APC has presented and wants to be the governor of Edo State. See, there is nothing to say about them. As far as we are concerned, he is not a contestant in this election. Like I said before, let me repeat, they will be the first people to vote for Asue Ighodalo. How do you expect that candidate to become the governor of Edo State? Are we jesters? Are we blind people? Are we going back to where we are coming from? So, any negative campaign against Asue Ighodalo by APC is just a campaign of calumny orchestrated by comedians and jesters. They are comedians, beginning from the party chairman to the candidate of the party to the deputy candidate, they are all comedians. So, when we want to relax and laugh, we go to their platform and laugh.

It has been alleged that the APC would deploy Federal might to win the election. Are you not worried?*

See, that is what they are saying, and that is why they are not working. We are working day and night, up and down trying to convince the people to vote because we believe in voting and counting of votes. They are not doing anything, and relying on Federal might. I am not afraid of Federal might. ‘Federal might’ cannot come and change election results in Edo State. Tinubu will not do that. When he contested his own election in Lagos State, he didn’t not win. They had a sitting governor, and they had the money and the influence in his own election but he didn’t win, yet President Tinubu didn’t use ‘Federal might’. So, is it Edo State that they want to come and change the result? I know they will not raise a finger to help APC to change the results in Edo State or rig election. If you heard him saying “I want Edo State, I want to claim Edo State”, he is only trying to persuade the people to come and work but they are not working. They are waiting for him to bring the Electoral Officer that they will give money to and tell him to change the result. Not in this town! Not in 2024, we’re ready for anything, nobody can change any result. The hand you want to use to write the fake result, we will cut the hand off. We will give you a short sleeve in place of a long sleeve just the way it was done in Liberia. Do you want to rig the election in Edo State? No, now! Asue Ighodalo is on the street 24/7, our people are visiting markets, organizing rallies and going round the state, you are planning to rig the election, not here. Nothing like that will happen. We will go to any level to resist it.

What do you have to say about the clamour for Justice, Equity and Fairness (JEF)? Do you see Olumide Akpata going far?*

We are one family in Edo State and we have said it is the turn of Esan people, even if there are only two candidates, we have said it is the turn of Esan people. Edo South has done it, Edo North has done it, only Esan that is left.  Olumide does not even have the capacity to go far and so he can’t win. His coming out from Edo South is a big setback for him. He may be able to convince a few people but Edo South people are saying let it go to Esan people this time around. All he will benefit from this election is that because it is his first time, it will help to create awareness for him so that next time he comes out he will not be a new face. And LP, I must tell you is a party that is open to other parties. We go there to harvest people. PDP will go there and take some, APC will go there and take some.  That is how we have been doing it.

If you were to advise Edo people ahead of the governorship election, what would you be telling them?*

I will tell them that this is not the time to vote for a governor who will be waiting for leaders before taking a decision. The people are more than the leaders, and we need a governor who will prioritize the people above the leaders. They have heard what the APC candidate said. They have heard what Asue Ighodalo said. APC candidate said he will be waiting for leaders and it is what the leaders say that he would do. Asue has come to tell you that look, I want to work, I want to develop Edo State, I want to bring development and prosperity, I want to create employment and look into the welfare of the people. So, they are two different categories and on two different wavelengths.  This is 2024 for crying out loud. We want a governor who will not wait for leaders to tell him what to do before he knows what to do. So, I will appeal to Edo people to please vote for Asue Ighodalo. He has the capacity, you have heard him talk, and he is the person who has Edo State and the development of this place at heart. I am not saying that he is not going to respect leaders or disrespect leaders but prioritizing leaders above the people is not in his agenda. I will appeal to them to vote for Asue, he will surprise Edo people. The man works very hard and he has the experience, clout and knowledge of economics to turn the state around.

Are you not worried that members of the Legacy PDP are reluctant to work with your candidate?

Looking at the issue of the Legacy PDP, in any family when one person is aggrieved, we look for a means to bring everybody to the round table to thrash it out. Injury to one is injury to all. So we are still appealing to the Legacy people to let us work together. Now, Obaseki is not on the ballot, what brought the anger is past now, so let us come together and work hard to deliver Asue. There are so many opportunities open to the party once Asue wins. I don’t want what happened before to happen again. Let us all come together to build Edo State. We don’t want a divided house. Up till now we are still appealing to them and we will continue to appeal to them. We want Chief Dan Orbih and others. So I appeal to Legacy, please come on board and join us.

As the CVR begins next week, what is your advice to the people?

Like I told you before our cardinal programme is to sensitise new people to register and vote. If you look at the state, most people who know the importance of elections don’t come out to vote. They are afraid of violence and thugs. But the last time they came out to vote they changed the narrative and I will be appealing to them to come out again this time. They know the difference between the two candidates. They should just sacrifice the two hours of that Election Day to vote. AS for the CVR, I appeal to everybody, go out early to register if you don’t have a voter’s card or lost it or it is damaged. Look for it now, know where it is, and keep it well. The exercise is just for 10 days, so we must not miss it.

  • S/South lawmakers, youths hail Fubara for one-year achievements

S/South lawmakers, youths hail Fubara for one-year achievements

A group of 60 Federal Lawmakers known as the (G60) and South/south Youths have described the achievements of Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara within one year of his administration as phenomenal and unmatchable.

According to them, Fubara’s infrastructure development in less than one year is a clear evidence  that the Governor has capacity despite failed attempted to distract him.

In a joint statement signed by Comrade Jaja Johnson, the G-60 and South/South youths said though Governor Fubara had been distracted by the political crisis in the state and actual governance started only three months ago,

his achievements in infrastructure and social services have surpassed those of some past administration.

They said the Multibillion Port Harcourt Ring Road, Omoku and Kalabari Super Highway were redefining road construction with

over half a trillion naira committed to it.

“In less than first 365 days of the the Governor Sim Fubara of Rivers State administration, over half a trillion naira has been committed to only three mega road projects out of many that have been started and are progressing rapidly with some nearing completion.

“For an administration to commit N501.2bn to only three roads in one year must in the face of vicious distraction is an uncommon feat. The Port Harcourt Ring Road is a giant infrastructure project that can

link the rural zone to the state capital.

“That was signed off on in July 2023 as the biggest project but just before the end of his one year in office, the Governor signed off on an even bigger single project, the much-expected Trans Kalabari Highway of over N225.1 billion.

“Also, the Rivers Executive Council has approved had approved N80.886 billion for the construction of the 33.5km long Elele-Omoku road project that will traverse three local government areas of the State – Ikwerre, Emohua and Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni.

“Just last weekend, the Ogoni-Andoni-Opobo Unity Road project initiated by former governor Peter Odili who left office in 2007 but completed under Fubara’s administration was inaugurated. He is also committed to addressing in the next six months, the deteriorating state of the health sector in the state as shown at the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) meeting last Wednesday where Rivers State was classified as below benchmark in terms of enrollments and health facility availability. Education and agriculture are equally undergoing revolution.

“Beyond infrastructure there is galvanization and restoration in the civil service with backlog of promotions, pensions cleared in addition to readiness to employ 10,000 fresh workers.

“Apart from that, the administration has disbursed N4 billion to businesses in the nano sector as well as the small and medium enterprise subsector from N400,000 to N10m each. This is being done through the Rivers State Micro Finance Agency (RIMA) in partnership with and technical support of Nigeria’s Bank of Industry (BoI).

“Another giant stride that stood His Excellency Fubara out is that, since May 29, 2023, the administration has raised the monthly IGR of the state from N12 billion that he met on assumption of office to N27 billion, which amounts to an increase of over 100 per cent and with this tempo the annual IGR would hit N324 billion.

“This a clear case of thinking outside the box, and rejigging the state’s internally generated revenue and transparency. It is on record that since the Governor’s assumption of office the least the state got from IGR is between N26 billion and N27 billion. The highest the state got before he took over was between N12 billion and N13billion at most.

“Before His Excellency, Mr Fubara became governor in May 2023, the yearly IGR of Rivers State in 2022 was N172.8 billion in 2022, indicating an average monthly IGR of N14.4 billion according to Nigeria’s data bank, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). In 2021 Rivers State IGR stood at N123.3 giving an average of N10.3 billion and in 2020, the state IGR was N117.2 billion while that of 2019 was N169.6 billion,” they stated.

  • Group suggests Imasuangbon as LP Gov candidate, Akpata running mate

Group suggests Imasuangbon as LP Gov candidate, Akpata running mate

Ahead of the governorship polls in Edo State, a group, Labour Party Forum for Justice, Equity and Fairness, has asked the leadership of the party to give the Edo gubernatorial ticket to Ken Imasuangbon and let Olumide Akpata serve as his running mate.

Speaking on behalf of the group in a statement, Dr. Ben Osage said the call was in furtherance to a report in some national dailies on May 19 2024 titled: “Edo 2024: Labour moves to reconcile Akpata, Imansuangbon.”

Osagies said the Labour Party stakeholders under the aegis of the Labour Party Forum For Justice, Equity and Fairness decided to put the records straight with the statement.

The statement reads in part: “It is certain that the Labour Party and the teaming Obidients across Edo state know that the September 21, 2024 Edo State governorship election is ours to win. It is without an ounce of equivocation clear that our dear party, the Labour Party believes in equity, justice and fairness. And it is important to put before the world the position of the LP stakeholders on the event superintended by select members of the party on the 23rd of February, 2024 that was called the Edo State Labour Party Governorship Primaries.

“Whilst commending the political commissions of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for efforts targeted at reconciling all interests, and reorganizing cum reshaping the LP for effective participation in the democratic space, we must hasten to state that no reconciliation will be sustainable and far-reaching if the pillars on which the party sustains is ignored or breached. Can there be genuine reconciliation where justice, equity and fairness is thrown overboard?

“The singular threat to the success of our dear party in the forthcoming Edo State governorship election is the fact that the largely mercantile erstwhile LP leadership under Julius Abure torpedoed the values of equity, justice and fairness by allowing a candidate from Edo South to emerge as the candidate whereas the incumbent Governor of Edo State Godwin Obaseki is from Edo South. Also curious is the fact that in 24 years of the present democracy Edo South when Obaseki’s tenure expires in a few months would have been in power for 16 years, and Edo North for eight years, it is therefore only just, fair and rquitable to have someone from Edo Central as the governorship candidate of our dear party.

“The two major political parties that we often vilify chose equity, justice and fairness over political correctness by ceding power to Edo Central knowing that inclusiveness ditto power rotation, power sharing and consensus building is necessary for development and progress. The PDP elected a candidate from Edo Central because equity, justice and fairness must count.

For the APC, the very sagacious and popular Pastor Ize-Iyamu withdrew from the race so someone from Edo Central could be the APC candidate, and when Comrade Oshiomole and his team thought otherwise by choosing a candidate from Edo South, it took the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who upon his return from a foreign trip instructed a rerun because of the call for justice, equity and fairness noting that Edo Central as it were must be given a chance to produce the next governor of the state.

“Indeed both the PDP and the APC have candidates from Edo Central, why should our dear LP that prides in justice, equity and fairness be different?”

“As though karma were lurking in the corners of our hypocrisy, the candidate so chosen through Abure’s subterfuge has huge legitimacy issues and the validity of the ticket is suspect. The choice of deputy and the issues surrounding the replacement of the placeholder, as well as the fact that Barrister Olumide Akpata can no longer present a valid deputy governorship candidate as stipulated by INEC rules and regulations having run out of time, even as he runs from pillar to post to validate a mortally defective ticket, we must state that the way out of the present logjam is for the LP to ask Barrister Olumide Akpata to resign and serve as deputy governorship candidate to Barrister Kenneth Imasuangbon who is from Edo Central.

Read Also: Edo dep gov, LP’s Akpata clash over thugs’ invasion of party secretariat

“Conversely the only window open to our dear party, so we do not lose out completely and not have a valid governorship candidate in Edo state is the providential action ditto the case in Court instituted by Imasuangbon challenging the validity of the Olumide Akpata ticket on grounds of law, and also raising serious issues regarding the propriety of the ticket knowing that it works against justice, equity and fairness. Indeed had Barrister Imasuangbon not gone to court, the fate of the LP in the Edo governorship election would have been sealed as the party will have no valid candidate knowing that Olumide Akpata does not have a valid deputy governorship candidate.

“As concerned stakeholders of the party, we plead with organized labour and the Obidients to prevail on Barrister Olumide Akpata to stepdown/resign and run as the deputy governorship candidate of our dear party, with Barrister Ken Imasuangbon as the governorship candidate, this is the way to prevent our dear LP from losing out completely because Barr. Olumide Akpata is not a valid candidate known to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Anything other than this clear pathway to victory will amount to the LP surreptitiously working for the PDP or the APC because without a valid ticket our struggle will pan for nothing.

“We are committed to seeing that everything humanly and legitimately possible is done to ensure that the LP wins Edo state come September 21, 2024, and the very bright path to tread is to support a Ken Imasuangbon/Olumide Akpata ticket. We pray this happens.”

Don’t destabilise Rivers for selfish gains, group tells council chairs

The Coalition for Democracy and Change in Nigeria (CDCN) has warned some Local Government chairmen in Rivers State to bury their reported plans to cause unrest in the State.

The group, in a statement by its leader, Barrister Rotimi Adewole, warned that any attempt to cause chaos, confusion and anarchy would be met with stiff resistance by Nigerians.

This comes on the heels of alarm raised by the State Councillors’ Forum about alleged plots by some chairmen to disrupt the peace in the state through protests.

As a non-partisan organisation dedicated to promoting democracy and good governance, Adewole said the group is concerned about the potential to undermine the democratic process, threaten the safety and security of citizens, and destabilize the entire state.

Adewole warned the chairmen that they would be held accountable for their actions should they eventually sabotage the government and cause a breakdown of law and order in the state

The pro-democracy group also alerted the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services and other security agencies over the potential threat to peace in Rivers.

“The Coalition for Democracy and Change in Nigeria, a non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting democracy and good governance, is alarmed by credible information revealing plots by some Local Government Chairmen in Rivers State to instigate chaos and a breakdown of law and order in the state,” the statement said.

“According to our sources, these Chairmen, allegedly working in cahoots with certain political interests, aim to disrupt the peace and stability of Rivers State through violent means, including attacks on political opponents, destruction of property, and other forms of violence.

“We are deeply concerned about this development and its potential to undermine the democratic process, threaten the safety and security of citizens, and destabilize the entire region. This dangerous plot is a desperate attempt to destabilize the state and pave the way for their selfish gains.

“The Chairmen’s actions are a clear violation of their oath of office and a betrayal of the trust placed in them by the people. Let this serve as a warning to those who seek to destabilize the state: we will hold you accountable for your actions, and we will not rest until peace and stability are restored in Rivers State.

” Any attempt to instigate violence, vandalism, or chaos will not be tolerated and will face the full wrath of the law. We, therefore, urge the relevant authorities, including security agencies and the Rivers State Government, to take immediate action to prevent this plot from materializing.

“We also call on all political actors to prioritize peace, tolerance, and the rule of law, and to refrain from any actions that could compromise the stability and well-being of the state and its people. The people of Rivers State should not be at the receiving end of certain political interests, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that their rights are protected.”

Group alleges plots to undermine NSCDC operations

A Yoruba Apex Youth organisation, Igbimo Odo Yoruba Afenifere, has raised the alarm over an orchestrated plot to undermine the Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC) and its leadership.

This, the group said, is part of the plot by some desperate politicians, to destabilise efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in addressing the nation’s security challenges.

The group described the plots as a deliberate smear campaign by those it called mischief makers hellbent on tarnishing the hard-earned reputation of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Dr Abubakar Audi.

In a statement by its Secretary General, Olalekan Ajasin, the Apex Yoruba youth organisation, said the recent campaign of publications and planned protest against the management of the NSCDC in a section of the media were intended to ridicule the corps.

He further said these mischief makers and agent provocateurs donning the garb of public officers hide under the umbrella and cloak of anti-corruption war to persecute their preserved enemies with contrary views.

The group urged Nigerians to disregard the innuendos orchestrated by fifth columnists, salute the gallantry, patriotism, new sense of direction, and determination to ride the country of vandalism and criminal elements and therefore passed a vote of confidence on the hierarchy of the corp, led by the Commandant General, Abubakar Audi.

“Nigerians are wiser now and would resist attempt by anyone, to jeopardize current efforts by the NSCDC in the fight against insecurity in Nigeria,” the group said.

It also urged the individuals behind such plot to allow the CG and his team at the NSCDC to concentrate in meeting their mandate of tackling the security challenges confronting the country.

Ighodalo hits APC’s Okpebholo over flood claim on GRA road

The People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) governorship candidate in Edo State Asue Ighodalo has lashed his All Progressives Congress (APC) counterpart Senator Monday Okpebholo for claiming he couldn’t drive his V8 SUV through a flooded portion of GRA road in Benin, the capital city.

It said a video clip by Okpebholo that he could not drive through a portion of the unspecified road in GRA was a “comedy or error” especially when an Audi 80 saloon car successful drove through the same road.

A statement by Team Asue Media Organisation(TAMO) on Friday cautioned Okpebholo to refrain from making wild allegations designed to discredit the ruling PDP and Ighodalo.

The statement reads: We are concerned that despite several appeals that the ongoing campaign be focused on issues, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo State, the leaders and now the candidate, Senator Monday Okpebolo, have made the peddling of lies and propaganda their primary focus.

“The latest such happened on Thursday, May 16 wherein Okpebholo was seen in a video clip making wild allegations against the state Government and Dr Asue Ighodalo, the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the same election on account of a flooded portion of an unspecified road in GRA.

“However, contrary to Senator Okpebholo’s claim that his V8 SUVs could not drive through the flooded spot, an AUDI 80 saloon car drove through it very easily with the driver smiling into the camera.

“We consider all these half-truths, outright lies, misinformation, disinformation and propaganda unhealthy for the polity and all designed to deceive the good people of Edo State. This is unacceptable and we call on APC and their supporters to apply caution. Mercifully, Edo people are wiser, smarter and more discerning than the APC and Okpebholo can ever think or imagine.

“We assert that, yes, Ighodalo has promised to “continue with the good policies of all previous administrations in the state, review those that deserved to be reviewed and do away with those that are not relevant or no longer meet the needs and aspirations of the people.” If Okpebholo and Edo APC have a problem with that simple statement of intention, we are sorry, we cannot help them.

“On his part, Ighodalo is ready to continue with Edo BEST, civil service reforms, land use administration reforms, optimization of security, regular salaries payment to government workers, regular payment of pensions and gratuities and many more that have put smiles on the faces of Edo people. And, Edo people have heard the message loud and clear and aligned with him.

“Ighodalo is determined to move Edo State from where it is now to a “First world sub-national government,” a state where all Edo sons and daughters would be proud to call home and return to invest, live and holiday without any fears whatsoever. Ighodalo will not be deterred by APC and Okpebholo’s smear campaign of calumny and orchestrated regime of lies and propaganda. A fruitful tree will inevitably have stones thrown at it.

“Ighodalo’s eyes remain fixed on the larger picture – make Edo a first world sub-national in Nigeria. He has all the competences, the capacity, the character, the compassion and the connection to make it happen.”

AA’s Iseghohi-Okojie battles Okpebholo, Ighodalo for Edo votes

    By Lucky Adeoluwa

In a move heralded as a beacon of democracy, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has unveiled the list of gubernatorial candidates for the upcoming Edo State election. With 17 contenders vying for the prestigious position of governor, the stage is set for a riveting electoral showdown.

Among the myriad of aspirants, four towering figures emerge as the frontrunners, each poised to chart a transformative course for Edo State. They are Prince Tom Iseghohi-Okojie of the Action Alliance party, Monday Okpebholo representing the All Progressives Congress (APC), Olumide Akpata carrying the banner of the Labour Party (LP), and Asue Ighodalo championing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stand at the forefront, embodying hope and promise for the people of Edo.

What sets this electoral landscape apart is not just the calibre of the candidates but also the inclusion of women in pivotal roles. Remarkably, two out of the four contenders have chosen female running mates, underscoring a progressive shift towards gender inclusivity in Nigerian politics. The decision to select a female running mate brings a myriad of advantages to the table.

Firstly, it sends a powerful message of gender equality and empowerment, showcasing a commitment to breaking down traditional barriers in politics. Secondly, female leaders often bring a different perspective and approach to governance, fostering greater empathy, inclusivity and collaboration. Lastly, it serves as a catalyst for inspiring future generations of women to actively participate in politics and leadership roles, thereby fostering a more diverse and representative democracy.

Delving into the profiles of the final four candidates, it becomes evident that each possesses a unique blend of strengths and experiences, along with their respective advantages and challenges.

The advantages of having a female running mate diverse representation: In a society striving for inclusivity, the selection of a female running mate signals a departure from traditional norms and a commitment to diversity. It brings underrepresented voices to the forefront, enriching the decision-making process with varied experiences and viewpoints.

Appeal to women voters: Women constitute a significant portion of the electorate, and having a female running mate can resonate strongly with female voters. It reflects an understanding of women’s issues and priorities, thereby fostering trust and garnering support from this demographic.

Symbol of progress: The presence of women in leadership positions challenges stereotypes and serves as a beacon of progress. It inspires young girls and women across the nation, showcasing that barriers can be broken, and aspirations can be realized irrespective of gender.

Assessing the final four candidates: Prince Tom Iseghohi-Okojie:  With a background steeped in corporate executive leadership, community development and grassroots engagement, Iseghohi-Okojie brings a nuanced understanding of local issues to the forefront. His emphasis on inclusive governance and sustainable development resonates with voters across demographics. Unfortunately, his party’s relative newcomer status may pose a challenge in garnering widespread support.  On the positive side of things, Prince Tom’s emphasis on grassroots empowerment signals a fundamental reorientation of power dynamics within Edo society. By amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and prioritizing their needs, he seeks to redress historical inequities and empower individuals to actively participate in shaping their own destinies. This grassroots-centric approach not only fosters a sense of ownership and agency among the populace but also cultivates a culture of civic engagement—a vital component of any vibrant democracy.

In tandem with his emphasis on inclusivity, Prince Tom’s agenda also reflects a commitment to values-driven governance. By espousing principles of integrity, accountability, and transparency, he seeks to instill a culture of ethical leadership that transcends partisan interests. In doing so, he sets a new standard for political conduct—one that is rooted in service to the people rather than self-aggrandisement.

This redefinition of political morality sits well with Edo’s populace, who yearn for leaders whose actions align with their professed values.

Furthermore, Prince Tom’s vision for Edo extends beyond the realm of politics, encompassing broader societal transformation. Through his focus on education reform, economic revitalization, and infrastructure development, he seeks to lay the foundation for sustainable growth and prosperity. In doing so, he not only addresses immediate challenges but also cultivates a culture of innovation and resilience—a prerequisite for long-term success in an ever-evolving global landscape.

The Prince Tom phenomenon thus represents more than just a political movement; it heralds a profound reimagining of Edo society—one characterized by inclusivity, integrity, and progress. As citizens rally behind his vision, they signal their collective desire for a future defined by unity and opportunity. In this sense, Prince Tom’s journey serves as a potent reminder of the transformative power of visionary leadership—a force capable of reshaping not only political institutions but also the very fabric of society itself.

Monday Okpevbolo (APC): A seasoned politician with a track record of public service, Monday Okpebolo embodies experience and stability. His party affiliation brings with it a formidable support base and resources. However, navigating the complexities of intra-party dynamics and managing divergent interests within the APC may present hurdles along the campaign trail.

Olumide Akpata (Labour Party): As a candidate representing the Labour Party, Olumide Akpata champions progressive ideals and economic empowerment. His background as a legal luminary lends credibility to his platform, particularly in matters of justice and governance reform. Yet, breaking through the dominance of competing political giants could prove challenging for the Labour Party’s turbulent presence in the state.

Asue Ighodalo (PDP): With a rich tapestry of experience spanning business and philanthropy, Asue Ighodalo brings a blend of vision and pragmatism to the table. His party affiliation provides a strong backing and a well-established network of support. However, navigating the intricate web of political alliances and managing heightened public expectations poses its own set of challenges.

The running mate effect: Prince Tom Iseghohi-Okojie & Deaconess Mabel Onaiwu.  At the helm of the Action Alliance party, Prince Iseghohi-Okojie has strategically selected Deaconess Mabel Onaiwu as his running mate, a move that speaks volumes of his commitment to inclusivity and grassroots engagement. Onaiwu’s illustrious career as a Chief Nursing Officer with the Edo State hospital management exemplifies dedication and service to the community. Her deep-rooted ties to the Assemblies of God church and extensive philanthropic endeavours underscore her unwavering commitment to uplifting the lives of others.  This combination will present massive issues for incumbent politicians because it has the combination of extensive financial, economic and transformative experience, with grassroots impact, philanthropy and extensive political experience locally, nationally and globally.

However, the relatively small and unknown nature of the Action Alliance will present a challenge for this formidable duo.

Monday Okpebolo & Denis Idahosa: Representing the APC, Monday Okpebolo has enlisted the support of Denis Idahosa, a rising political star known for his previous gubernatorial bid. While strategically sound geographically, this decision may carry disadvantages, particularly in comparison to the formidable female running mates chosen by other contenders.

However, Okpebolo’s extensive political experience and Idahosa’s grassroots mobilization efforts cannot be underestimated.

Olumide Akpata & Faith Alufohai: Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party’s flagbearer, has opted for Faith Alufohai as his running mate, leveraging the advantages of a female presence on the ticket. However, the party’s reputational liabilities and rumours surrounding Akpata’s relationship with the incumbent governor may overshadow the benefits of this strategic choice, potentially hindering their electoral prospects.

Asue Ighodalo and Osarodion Ogie: Asue Ighodalo, representing the PDP, has aligned himself with Osarodion Ogie, a top official closely associated with the present governor. This alliance sends a message that could be perceived as a bid for a third term, a notion that Edo citizens are likely to vehemently reject for various reasons, including the desire for change and resistance to the perpetuation of entrenched power dynamics.

The rejection of illegitimate power sustenance: Edo citizens have historically shown a strong aversion to politicians attempting to clandestinely extend their tenure in office. The attempt to sustain power beyond constitutional limits is viewed as a betrayal of democratic principles and an affront to the will of the people. Such actions undermine trust in the political process and erode confidence in the integrity of governance, ultimately leading to widespread disillusionment and unrest among the electorate.

The epic battle ahead: As the campaign trail heats up, Edo State braces itself for an epic battle between the four contenders. At present, the PDP holds a slight lead, closely followed by the APC, with the Action Alliance trailing behind and Labour facing significant challenges. However, with the fast-growing momentum of the Action Alliance party, the dynamics of the race are poised to shift dramatically in the coming months.

Looking ahead: In the months leading up to the elections, Edo voters will face a pivotal choice between embracing the promise of something new and transformative leadership embodied by Prince Tom Iseghohi-Okojie or opting to sustain the legacy of the incumbent governor. As the countdown to the gubernatorial elections commences, Edo State finds itself at a crossroads, poised to make a choice that will shape its future trajectory. With a diverse array of candidates offering competing visions for progress and prosperity, the electorate hold the power to chart a course towards a brighter tomorrow. May the spirit of democracy prevail and may the voices of the people resound loud and clear on Election Day. With their sophisticated understanding of the issues at stake and their unwavering commitment to shaping the future of their state, Edo citizens are poised to chart a course that will reverberate far beyond the confines of their borders. Only time will reveal the outcome of this historic electoral showdown.
