Ex-Rep member calls for solidarity for President Tinubu

A former member of House of Representatives, Hon. Bamidele Faparusi, has called for solidarity and prayers for President Bola Tinubu.

According to him, the President does require protests to fix the nation but the support of the people.

Engr. Faparusi who was also the Director General of a frontline Tinubu support group, National Unity Movement for Bola Ahmed Tinubu (NUMBAT) also advised the Federal government to “control inflation through the reduction of FAAC sharing instead of the regular increase in the interest rate by the CBN.”

Faparusi in a statement in Abuja, said, “Tinubu is fighting against economy saboteurs who have turned to principalities and powers. The economic problem we face today is the accumulation of financial recklessness of previous administrations, the present economic woo is inevitable and it is better we face it now and move on.

“Yes, it is painful, it will always be painful but we should commend Tinubu for choosing the path of holistic solution rather than cosmetic approach of previous administration. I don’t see any present leader aside Tinubu that has the audacity to confront the years of economic decay knowing that doing so will bring immediate pain. Fearless steps to end official graft.

“The problem with our economy is that there are principality and powers who derive gains by sabotaging every good policies of the government. This principalities and powers are politicians, top civil servants, top businessmen , bankers and so on. The battle the president is fighting is against these powerful individuals and corporations who control the dark economy.”

According to him, sharing all of the savings from the fuel subsidy removal at FAAC is a strong contributor to inflation and devaluation of Naira.

He said these funds are “siphoned into the dark economy by corrupt government officials, businessmen, banks alike.”

“Social intervention is necessary if we can remove the propensity of corruption associated with its implementation,” he said.

Faparusi further opined that, the new Minimum Wage should be implemented at least to take away funds available to be stolen by the privileged few, which will be used to hunt dollars.

Adding that, the CBN should place restrictions on buyer of Forex and not on sellers. “We need liquidity in the forex market, the new policy of restrictions on forex inflow will be counterproductive, our forex problem is high demand, and this excessive demand is mostly from corruption proceed.

“The policy should read ‘buyers of $10000 and above must declare their source of funds (Naira)” instead of the restrictions placed on sellers by the new CBN regulations.”
He however disclosed that, the three main economic issues Nigeria has been battling with over the last three decades have been corruption, fuel subsidy regime and poorly regulated Forex market.

The combination of these three issues, he said can be responsible for other vices like insecurity, lower standard of living, reduced FDI, etc.

To this, he ask, “Why blame Tinubu for choosing the clear accumulated mess of his predecessors? Majority of Nigerian agreed that the mess of fuel subsidy, chronic corruption and the poorly regulated forex have to be cleared.

“But the question is when and how. Nigeria elected President Tinubu to answer the questions of when and how. And Tinubu answer to when is now, yes, not everyone agreed but I do agree that we must confront this problems now. If you ask me, if I agree with the how it say, No.

“I believe that the application of savings from the subsidy removal is responsible for the uncontrollable inflation we are experiencing, the savings are passed on the Federal, State and Local through FAAC. We all know how endemic corruption is at the sub-national level where some governors handle state treasuries like personal account.

“The fuel subsidy savings are siphoned into the dark economy and this free funds end up to be used to buy up dollars putting undue pressure on Naira, or how do we explained the increased FAAC sharing of over 100% and yet no state has increased the salary of its workers, some states has refused to clear the backlog of salary, pension and gratuity of workers.

“Like Tinubu always say, “don’t pity me, I beg for the job”. Yes Tinubu don’t need our pity but solidarity, encouragement and prayers,” he said.

The private residence of the Minister of State, Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mariya Mahmoud, No. 9, Justice Roseline Ukeji Close, Asokoro was razed by fire yesterday.

It was learnt that that nothing was salvaged from the house as response was slow in arriving at the location.

There was statement to confirm the incident by the media aide to the minister, Mr. Austine Elemue.

But when contacted, he confirmed the incident and said the cause of the fire outbreak, which started around 10am, was being investigated.

He also confirmed that no life was lost in the inferno.

Security operatives and fire fighters were battling to put out the fire as at the time of filing this report.

The Acting Director of the FCT Fire Service, Abiola Adebayo, who also confirmed the incident, said that the first floor of the building was completely razed.

He explained that the fire had started at about 9:45am, but said officers of the Service arrived at the scene some minutes after they received a running call after responders had tried to reach the Federal Fire Service.

A running call means that rather than calling the Emergency line of the Fire Service, responders had insisted on going to the office to get the attention of the firemen.

He said: “The fire was discovered a few minutes to ten, maybe around 9:45am. We received a running call around thirteen minutes after ten, so we followed the person who came to call us to the fire scene.

“All of them were on the ground floor. They did not discover the fire on time, and they didn’t call the Fire Service. It was a running call that came to us. From our investigation, they say they called the Federal Fire Service, but they didn’t respond on time, that’s when the running call came to our office.

“On reaching there, we saw that the first floor, the upper floor were completely engulfed in fire. So what we could do is just to prevent the fire from spreading to the ground floor, and the adjacent structures. No life was lost.”

The eye witness said: “I witnessed it all. I leave two buildings away from here. The fire I learnt started around 10am and could you believe that the fire fighters did not arrive at the scene until 1pm. When they came, they could not salvage anything.

“When the fire started, we were worried that it would not spread to another compound. I can also tell you that no life was lost”.

SDP chieftain, LSDPC CEO grace Book Party

Erstwhile presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Partry (SDP), Khadijah Okunnu-Lamidi and Managing Director/CEO, Lagos State Development Property Corporation (LSDPC), Ayodeji Joseph were among those who graced The Tomi Falade Book Party last weekend.

The event which held on  February 11 at De Rembrandt Hotel,  Alausa, Ikeja,  Lagos saw journalist Tomi Falade launch her first two books; ‘Dates From Hell’ and ‘OLOBUN: Matriarch Of Ondo, Mother Of Legacy’.

According to Falade, who currently serves as a Life Editor at Independent, launching the two books at the same time was coincidental.

“The plan was to originally launch Dates From Hell  last year , but prevailing circumstances at the time made me move it to 2024. Now that the two books are ready I just thought that I could do both at the same time, so here we are. This is why I tagged the event a book party.

“Many people do not realise that literature can be fun, this event is to show that we can genuinely have fun with literature.”

About the books, she stated: “The two books are very different, they are as different as they could have been.

“‘OLOBUN: Matriarch of Ondo, Mother Of Legacy’ is a rich drama set in 15th-century Oyo and explores themes of adventure, exile, and the birth of the lasting legacy of the Ondo Kingdom. I started writing it over a decade ago and the plan was that it would be put on stage.

“‘Dates From Hell’ on the other hand is a collection of short stories based on true events of people on romantic dates. Each of the stories are as funny as they are unique.”

Among other things, the event, which was hosted by Gbenga Adeyinka D 1st had dance performances, a drama scene from Olobun, a skit based on a date from hell story, and a panel session.

The highlights of the evening were a panel discussion featuring top-profile personalities, who offered glimpses into their perspective of the books, and an interactive session with the author.

“These are amazing works. I’m impressed by the research that went into ‘Olobun: Matriarch of Ondo, Mother Of Legacy’. Many people are not aware of the foundations of Ondo. Also, to see a journalist write sensationally about horrible but funny dating experiences that people go through is such a delight.” These were the words of Okunnu-Lamidi, a Presidential Aspirant during the last General elections.

CSOs urge NASS to probe FG’s $3.4bn COVID 19 loan, subsidy savings, others

A coalition of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) on Friday, called on the National Assembly to probe the $3.4billion loan collected by the Federal Government from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in April 2020 without proof of how it was utilised.

The group also kicked against ceaseless requests for loans by the Federal Government and expeditious approvals given by the National Assembly with little or nothing to point at as what the loans were used for.

They added that savings made by the government from fuel subsidy removal from May last year till date have not been accounted for by the government, as Nigerians are watching and suffering.

The nine CSOs led by the Executive Director of Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC), Auwal Musa Rafsanjani, at a media briefing, alleged that the incessant loans by the FG made the debt profile of the country to presently stand at N87.9trillion, which is equivalent to $114.3billion.

Kaduna communities hail army over bandit commander’s killing

    • Matawalle: It’s evidence military’s efforts yielding fruit

As residents of the troubled communities in Chikun, Igabi and Birnin Gwari local government areas of Kaduna State, have applauded the Nigerian Army over the killing of notorious bandits Isyaku Boderi, Governor Uba Sani, has assured of continuous support for the security forces.

Boderi, who was said to have masterminded several high-profile attacks, including the kidnap of Yauri school girls, Greenfield University, and breach of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), had abducted and killed many villagers and prevented them access to their farms.

The communities members who said they now feel a sense of relief, as they will now be able to sleep with both eyes closed and return to their farms, urged the security forces to go after Boderi’s foot soldiers who are already demoralised.

Some of the villagers along the Buruku, Birnin Gwari axis who spoke to journalists on Friday expressed happiness that Boderi’s long reign of terror is over.

The infamous bandit kingpin Boderi Isyaku was killed by troops of 1 Division, Nigerian Army around Bada/Riyawa general areas of Chikun and Igabi LGAs in Kaduna state on Wednesday.

Boderi and his associates were ambushed and neutralised by military troops after a fierce gun battle.

The state Governor, Senator Uba Sani, who spoke through the Overseeing Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Samuel Aruwan, expressed gratitude to the Nigerian Army for eliminating the notorious bandit kingpin who had been a source of terror for years.

According to Aruwan, “We are very happy with the recent victory of the military. For over eight years, we have been trailing that bandit element called Boderi. He has caused our state so much; he killed so many citizens, so many cases of abductions. So many communities suffered so much as a result of his terrorism activities.

“So, we are grateful to the military, particularly the Nigerian Army who brought his reign to an end. We are happy and this is clear message that whoever is doing anything against national security and safety of our citizens, no matter how long, the long arm of the law will catch up with them. For years, Boderi caused a lot of havoc, but as you can see, at the end of the day, we got him.

“The Government of Kaduna State under the leadership of Senator Uba Sani has been supporting the security agencies that are carrying out internal operations across the state. We are also mobilising our citizens to be providing intelligence to the security agencies operating in the various locations within the state.

“We are assuring that the government of Kaduna State under the able leadership of Senator Uba Sani, will continue to support the security forces operating in Kaduna state. This is the position of His Excellency, Governor Uba Sani,” Aruwan assured.

However, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Valentine Okoro, during an operational tour of his area of responsibility commended troops for their bravery and professionalism while urging them to do more.

Reacting, the Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, Friday, said the killing of Boderi and his foot soldiers is a signal that the military is winning the battle against terrorism in the North-West and the entire country, stating that Boderi for nearly a decade propagated a reign of fear, death and destruction in Kaduna State and neighbouring Niger State.

According to the Minister, the killing of Boderi and his cohorts was a major breakthrough in Nigeria’s fight against banditry and terrorism.

Matawalle commended the bravery and professionalism of the military, adding that such a feat needed to be sustained “so that we can stem out insecurity from the country.”

He said President Bola Tinubu was committed to providing adequate security in every part of the country.
