Minna Catholic Diocese to provide trauma healing programme for IDPs

The Catholic Diocese of Minna has disclosed its plans to provide tramme healing programmes for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and victims of terrorism in Niger state.

This, according to the church, is due to the post-traumatic stress disorder faced by the victims and IDPs after experiencing attacks on their homes, families and farmlands or being abducted and released by the terrorists.

The Coordinator of the Justice Development and Peace Commission (JDPC), Rev. Father Dauda Musa Bahago disclosed this during the closing ceremony of the ‘Emergency Response for Herders and Farmers Clash in Niger State’ Project at the Internally Displaced Persons Camps (IDP) in Gwada in Shiroro local government area of Niger state.

He said that the people need more than foodstuff as they are currently going through various stages of mental disorder which when not addressed could be detrimental to their body and health.

Bahago called on the Niger state Government to include the provision of counselling and therapy for victims of banditry and terrorism in the state as part of humanitarian assistance given to the victims rather than focusing only on the provision of food.

He noted that interviews and interactions with the victims have shown that the experiences they suffered have been harrowing and life threatening which should not be left like that.

“The Catholic Diocese of Minna is moving around, and appealing to well-meaning Nigerians to see that we provide mental and psycho-social support.

“In as much as they are here and can’t go back to their communities for now, they should live in the best mental state,” he said.

Bahago said that the JDPC Minna has been working tirelessly to meet the needs of displaced persons through the provision of relief materials such as food and medicine noting that the Catholic Diocese of Minna had earlier provided medical services to the displaced persons through the intervention of the Divine Mercy Hospital.

  • Foundation urges govt to implement free basic education for all

Foundation urges govt to implement free basic education for all

The Executive Director of FlexiSAF Foundation, Mrs Amina Abubakar, has called on government to implement its policy of free basic education for all.

She made the call after embarking on a walk tagged “Walk for Education 3.0” to draw attention of government and critical stakeholders on the need to prioritize education in the country.

She said the third edition of the signature event of the Foundation, which is a fitness and advocacy walk, was to commemorate Human Rights Day 2023.

This initiative, she said, is a testament to the FlexiSAF Foundation’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that

no child is deprived of the opportunity to learn and reach their potential through quality education.

Abubakar said the theme for this year’s Walk for Education, “2030 on the Horizon: Naija’s Journey to Achieving SDG 4,” underscores the urgency of tackling Nigeria’s education crisis, which currently bears the unfortunate distinction of having the highest number of out-of-school children in the world.

“This theme serves as a clear call to action for advocacy and increased awareness,

urging stakeholders to prioritize education, particularly for marginalized children.

“It also emphasizes the critical need for increased government investment, enhanced accountability, and improved coordination in Nigeria’s education sector, signifying that, through collective effort, the ambitious goal of providing quality education for all can indeed be achieved by 2030,” she said.

She said their target was to ensure free basic education for all.

“So today our target is that we want to implement to implement the free education for all. The government says education is free, basic education is free. But a lot of children are not in school because it is not free,” she said.

She said the target of the organisation was to ensure that at least 600 children get back to school.

“After we achieve that, part of our future plans is to make this work bigger, even more strategic. The more we get embedded into the space, build our capacity, we would make it more and more big,” she said.

The Executive Director called for support from the government and other relevant stakeholders to achieve their objective.

“We are trying to better each and every year. Kindly come to our tables to make a commitment to help children go back to school. As you can see the children you have seen here are from our accelerated learning program. It is a non formal learning programme that helps kids in the community.

“The children don’t have to go to school everyday for long hours so we have community acceptability. Instead of learning for nine years, these over aged children they learn in three years. So you may be wondering what kind of expertise does this FlexiSAF Foundation have that they are giving education meant for nine years in three years. What kind of madness is that? I am telling you, it is not madness. It true. In fact it is a nationally approved accelerated education curriculum. It is also called accelrated basic education. Instead of learning in nine years these children learn in three years.

“What you saw here they learnt in less than 12 months and this girl is speaking English to you and everything. So please do well to encourage FlexiSAF foundation. The Foundation was established in 2018 and so far we have supported more than 5000 children and with your support we can do more.

“For the sponsorship program you commit 60, 000 naira only per year per child and we

We even feed this children as you can see them. We don’t believe we can do this work alone. Everybody has to come together. We have together to speak with one voice,” she said

FlexiSAF Foundation also unveiled the Young Advocate of the Year, announcing Yahaya Abubakar as the distinguished winner of the 2023 inaugural Advocate of the Year contest organized under its Young Education Advocates Program.

Abubakar said, “The Young Education Advocates Program, an integral part of the FlexiSAF Foundation’s commitment to empowering the youth, serves as a platform to nurture and recognize the efforts

of young individuals dedicated to creating social change in their communities and beyond.

“The unveiling of the Young Advocate of the Year underscores the Foundation’s dedication to fostering the next generation of social impact champions who would advance social causes, including education.

“This event not only celebrated the achievements of the awardees but also

emphasized the collective impact of youth engagement in advocating for quality education in Nigeria and transforming communities.”

Director General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Dr Kashifu Inuwa, said digital infrastructure was necessary to get quality education.

“So at NITDA we have part of our strategic roadmap and action plan. We have a pillar to include inclusive access to digital infrastructure and services. And for the past four years we have implemented more than 1200 projects in unserved and underserved communities mostly in the education system; secondary schools and higher institutions.

“So we will do more and also we have a target of implementing the national literacy framework to achieve 95% digital literacy by 2030. So, we want to work with foundations like to define our initiative for quality and inclusive access to education through digital infrastructure. From next year we are coming up with the new initiative; learning centres will be deployed three per state. Our target is public schools where they don’t have infrastructure,” he said.

Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Education Mrs. Claris Ojani urged the legislative arm of Government to make and implement laws that will enable children leave the streets and acquire basic education.

The Minister pledged the support of the Federal Government to the initiative by FlexiSAF.

Bago unveils green economy blueprint at COP28

Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State on Friday unveiled a strategic green economy blueprint document for the state to the global community at the ongoing COP28 Climate Summit in the United Arab Emirates.

According to Bago, this was to reposition Niger as the leading state in green economy in Nigeria.

He said the key mandates of the green economy Initiative, as encapsulated in the blueprint document, are interwoven around five interconnected pillars.

The pillars, he said, are environmental conservation and management of carbon sink assets, sustainable resource management, renewable energy for development, inclusivity, and private sector-led job creation, especially green ones.

These efforts, he said, are indications of Niger State’s resolve to safeguard the environment, enhance climate resilience, and foster sustainable resource management.

Bago said this would diversify its economy, promote clean energy transition, ensure food security, and create green jobs that would empower its communities.

He said the State is committed to long-term sustainability along the pathway to net zero, planning to plant one billion trees for carbon credits sequestration.

The trees, he said, would be planted on 760,000 hectares of land in the next four to five years by signing an MoU with the Blue Carbon Organization under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed Dalmook Al Maktoum.

He said the state also intends to develop large crop farm estates of 10,000 hectares each.

About 100 of such estates, he said, would be developed across the state, sustainably to manage water resources, produce and process crops, create jobs, and generate wealth for its citizens.

“Niger State aims to cultivate 250,000 hectares of land annually for sugar, sweet sorghum, cassava, and corn to produce one billion liters annually, thereby helping to reduce significantly greenhouse gas emissions,” he said.

Sambo stated that the Governor Dauda Lawal-led administration is doing everything possible to bring about the desired development in the state but not to witch hunt or project anyone in a bad light.

When Lawal took over power as governor of Zamfara on May 29, 2023, the controversy about stolen operational vehicles at the Government House Gusau and siphoning of public funds set in, and security agencies raided the two residences of Matawalle in Gusau and Maradun local governments where some vehicles were recovered.

  • House pushes for Mines Inspectorate agency

House pushes for Mines Inspectorate agency

The Chairman House of  Representatives  Committee on Solid Minerals, Gaza Gbefwi said the House  is advocating for the establishment of a Mines Inspectorate Environmental Agency.

He said the agency would monitor miners to ensure better revenue for the country just like the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) handles tax payers.

Gbefwi said the greatest challenge in the solid minerals sector is dealing with illegal miners and the fact that it does not have enough boots on ground the tackle the scourge.

The lawmaker said this yesterday in Abuja at the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Research Project, policy dialogue with legislature, Senate and House of Representative committees on Solid Minerals.

Gbefwi said: “If Nigeria can have the resources coming from the Solid Minerals sector, Nigeria would be far ahead of its pairs within the subregion because of the great endowment we enjoy in Solid minerals.

“Unfortunately, States have very lean manpower in terms of the inspection of mining sites at the state levels. What we are advocating for is to see that we increase the number of boots on the ground in the states where you have in each senatorial district, mines Inspectorate offices that are established with adequate manpower that we hope would graduate into an independent entity that can be called the Mines Inspectorate Environmental Agency that would be in charge of compliance and give them independence and flexibility to operate.

“We know that one of the greatest challenges of this sector is illegal mining, ones we can have adequate monitoring like FIRS monitors tax payers, let’s have an agency that would monitor miners so that we have better revenue at the end of the day.”

Chairman RMAFC, Mohammed Shehu said over the years, in the course of discharging this mandate, the Commission has observed that revenue accruals into the Federation Account from the solid mineral sector has been abysmally low, compared to that from hydrocarbons.

He said this is opposed to what was obtained in the 60s and 70s, when the Nigerian economy was sustained by revenue from the agricultural and solid mineral sectors.

She added that consequently, and in line with effort of the Government of the Federation to diversify the nation’s economy, the Commission conducted Two nationwide solid minerals revenue monitoring exercises in the last Seven years. Specifically, 2016 (Phase 1) and 2022 (Phase ll), with the intention of boosting revenue generation from the mining sector.

The Chairman also said it has been established that despite the robust activities of Artisanal and Small Scale Mining, the subsector contributes negligible amount to the Federation Account due to the informal nature of operations.
