    Yusuf engages 4500 youths for ‘Keep Kano clean’

    Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has engaged 4,500 youths as street sweepers for routine clearing of the metropolis.

    In a statement, the governor’s Press Secretary, Malam Bature Dawakin-Tofa, in Kano yesterday, said Yusuf,  kicked off the keep Kano clean initiative, tagged “Operation Nazafah”, at Kofar Kwaru, Emir’s palace, Kano.

    He said the government has purchased 10 additional trucks for refuse evacuation and engaged 4,500 street sweepers on casual contract under the Refuse Management and Sanitation Board (REMASAB) to clear major streets within the metropolis.

    “Apart from the 10 additional trucks, we also procured two additional pay loaders and repaired many other heavy duty machines/vehicles for the purposes of the exercise.

    “Three thousand out of the 4,500 street cleaners are members of the famous community security volunteers, also known as “Askarawan Kwankwasiyya” led by Alhaji Saminu Balago Yakasai, while the remaining 1,500 are the ones engaged by previous administration of Sen. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who were subjected to a screening exercise at the inception of the present administration,” he said.

    Yusuf enjoined the beneficiaries to dedicate themselves to their assignment to achieve the desired goal of having a city conducive and healthy for habitation.

    The governor maintained that the state government would soon sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the procession of refuse into fertiliser, a move that would create additional job opportunities, revenue for the government and healthy environment for the city’s habitants.

    Earlier, the Managing Director of REMASAB, Alhaji Haruna Zago, assured the governor that his agency would   strictly monitor the street sweepers for effective service delivery.

    Benue Judiciary to get financial autonomy

    Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has said the Judiciary arm of government in the state will get financial autonomy in line with the Nigerian Constitution  and the Benue State Judiciary Fund Management (Financial Autonomy) Law, 2021.

    Alia stated this during the closing of the 2023/2024 state Judiciary Legal Year celebration, at the City Bay Event Centre, Makurdi, on Saturday.

    According to the governor, autonomy is essential in that it would enable the judges to apply the law without fear or favour.

    Alia, who re-emphasised the determination of his administration to create an enabling investment environment to attract investors to the state, said such a desire could only become possible if the judiciary arm is there to protect investors from legal proceedings.

    He described the Judiciary as a valued partner in his administration’s efforts to reposition Benue, promising to look into the welfare of judges, including those of the lower bench.

    In the words of the governor, “situations where judges of the lower courts in Benue State travel by public transportation, including commercial motorcycles  popularly known as ‘Okada”, is an enormous risk and poses grave dangers to the lives of the judges and their work.”

    He directed the state Attorney-General and Commissioner of Justice and Public Order, Fidelis Mnyim, to liaise with the Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambese, and work out modalities aimed at improving judges’ welfare.

    While felicitating with the judiciary, the governor charged them to strive towards ensuring speedy and timely dispensation of justice in this new legal year.

    Earlier the Chief Judge of Benue State, Justice Maurice Ikpambese and Mr. Mnyim, emphasised on the special role the judiciary has played in strengthening the electoral process, stating further that the judiciary will continue to act as a pillar of justice and will continue to sustain democracy in Nigeria and Benue State.

    Fintiri begins N5bn credit guarantee scheme

    Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has begun the N5bn credit guarantee scheme for agribusiness owners in the state.

    A statement by Muhammad Tukur, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, said beneficiaries of the scheme would include producers, aggregators and marketers.

    Fintiri, while speaking in the Government House Yola, said the scheme is one of the main components of the Adamawa Agribusiness Support (ADAS) Programme.

    He explained that the scheme would help the beneficiaries to access loans from financial institutions.

    Fintiri appealed to people to continue to exercise patience over the hike in the price of food items, adding that his administration would continue to provide palliatives to the people to cushion the effect.

    The Secretary to the State Government, Auwal Tukur, said that through the ADAS, the state government has generated over N1 billion from the Agribusiness collections.

    The highlight of the event was the presentation of loan letters to some of the beneficiaries of the scheme.

    Police rescue 39 kidnapped victims in Bauchi gov’s local govt

    The Bauchi State Police Command has rescued 39 kidnap victims in the Yankari Forest in Alkaleri Local Government Area.

    The police said the kidnappers demanded N50 million ransom from each of the victims abducted before the intervention of its team.

    The Nation reports that Alkaleri, where the state governor, Bala Mohammed hails from has not been spared of the terror unleashed by bandits in parts of the state.

    Mohammed had recently decried the spate of kidnappings in the State, identifying the flash point areas as Toro, Ningi, Alkaleri and Tafawa-Balewa LGAs.

    Irked by the development, the governor ordered the Joint Security Taskforce to engage the bandits and secure the release of all kidnapped victims who were abducted a few days ago.

    The rescue operation was said to have taken place on September 15, 2023, by the Command “Operation Sharan Daji” team in collaboration with local hunters led by CSP Makama Magaji.

    The operatives said they equally neutralised about 10 suspected bandits at the Red Mountain (Jan-Dutse).

    Spokesman of the Command, SP Mohammed Wakil disclosed the news of the successful operation to journalists in a statement issued on Saturday.

    According to the statement, the Police acted on credible intelligence before it invaded the kidnappers’ enclave while engaging them in a heavy gun battle.

     “The operatives successfully defaced the suspected kidnappers to whisk them away in disarray with serious bullet wounds into the nearest bushes and successfully rescued kidnapped victims therein.”

    The police rescued 39 kidnapped victims, 28 of which were male, while 8 were female, alongside 3 infants, who were reunited with their families unhurt after a medical check-up at the General Hospital Alkaleri.

    Wakil further disclosed that preliminary investigation revealed that the kidnappers target traders coming back from the Mararrabar Liman Katagum market.

    The gunmen numbering about 24 with AK-47 rifles were said to have intercepted their victims and whisked them to the Red Mountain (Jan-Dutse) on the said day.

    In another development, suspected gunmen reportedly kidnapped an Assistant Superintendent of Police in Toro town, Toro Local Government Area of the state.

    The gunmen were said to have stormed the town on Friday night, shooting sporadically, and throwing the whole town into disarray.

    Kano empowers 50 women to improve their living standards

    Kano State government on Saturday said it would devote resources to improve the lives and livelihood of women, in view of the role they play in economic and social development.

    The Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Danjuma Mahmud stated this in a message during the flag off of distribution of rams and goats to women in Tudun Wada, Doguwa and Bebeji local government areas.

    A statement by the Project Communication Specialist, Ameen Yassar, said the palliatives were distributed under the Kano State Agro-pastoral Development Project (KSADP).

    The distribution of the rams and goats covers all the 44 local government areas of the state and is being monitored to ensure that the process is not manipulated, it was learnt.

    The commissioner, who was represented by the Director of Administration in the Ministry, Alhaji Muhammad Tukur Jalal, said government intends to empower women with skills, resources and opportunities to enable them take care of their families and become more active players in nation building.

    “Government takes the issue of supporting women with productive assets such as the ram fattening and goats reproduction schemes to assist women especially those at the grassroots to gain an economic foothold, seriously” he said.

    He charged the beneficiaries to take good care of the livestock and make sure they are not sold for frivolous reasons.

    State Programme Coordinator of Agro-pastoral Development Project, Malam Ibrahim Garba Muhammad, said 50 women will benefit from the scheme in each of the 44 local government areas of the state.

    “About 3,474 citizens of the state have received cows, rams and goats under the first phase of the programme. The essence is to help the beneficiaries improve their income and living standard”, he emphasised.

    Muhammad said the KSADP, which is funded by the Islamic Development Bank, the Lives and Livelihood Funds and the government of Kano State, is executing several capital projects and programmes across the state, to reduce poverty and strengthen food and nutrition security, by developing agro-pastoral production.

    The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Mopamuro, on Friday, staged a solidarity walk in support of the  Governorship candidate of the party, Usman Ododo. 

    Thousands of party members stormed the road to drum support for Ododo, saying Mopamuro will remain the stronghold of the party. 

    The walk, which started in Odole Mopa at Johnbull Mechanical Workshop, covered other Wards in the Local Government Area, ending at Amuro. 

    Addressing the crowd, the Kogi Commissioner for Information and Communications, Hon. Kingsley Fanwo, said candidates promoting sectional agenda were living in the past and would be rejected in the Local Government. 

    The Executive Chairman of Mopamuro Local Government Area, Hon. Moses Sunday David, told the party faithful to ensure the Local Government replicates the feat in the last House of Assembly Election where the party won in all the 10 wards of the LGA. 

    The Member representing Mopamuro Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Olawumi Jacob, said his victory in March had strengthened the party, noting that the new lease of unity would ensure unprecedented victory.

    Others were business mogul and APC stalwart, Dr. Ayodele Delex; Engr Sylvanus Babatunde Elewa; Hon. Dennis Komolafe and the Vice Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. Mrs Mercy Obajemu. 

    The enthusiastic party members pledged their total support and solidarity towards the victory of the candidate, Ododo.

    1,000 Yobe flood victims get N100,000 each

    Each of 1,000 victims of the 2022 flooding in Yobe got N100,000 yesterday from Federal Government’s COVID-19 Action Recovery and Economic Stimulus (NG-CARES) programme.

    Governor Mai Mala Buni inaugurated the cash transfer for the flood and other natural disaster victims in Damaturu.

    He also kicked-off the transfer of N10,000 monthly stipends to each of 3,510 other beneficiaries.

    “I am pleased to be here to launch the new component of cash transfer grant of N100,000 each to 1,000 beneficiaries who were victims of flood disaster and other shocks. I am also happy to flag off the distribution of N10,000 monthly stipends each to 3,510 beneficiaries across the state.

    “The two components are part of the NG-CARES programme of the Federal Government,” he said.

    He said the state government had employed workable and realistic measures to facilitate post-insurgency recovery process of sustainable means of livelihood for the people of the state.

    “These include training in skills acquisition, provision of tools, and start-up capital for youths and widows who opted to engage in Point of Sale business, irrigation, tailoring, painting, GSM phones and laptops repairs.

    “Others are fish, poultry production, small-scale rice milling, personal beauty and hygiene, furniture-making, catering, fashion designing, auto and electronic technics, food processing, animal husbandry and building,” he said.

    Buni added that Yobe would continue to collaborate with the Federal Government; with development partners and with relevant organisations on livelihood support and development of the state.

    He commended the Office of the NG-CARES in Yobe for the timely implementation of the new component of the programme.

    The governor also lauded the office for implementing the payment of N10,000 monthly stipends which had been extended by two years by the Federal Government.

    Earlier, Yobe Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs Hajiya Mairo Amshi, said the beneficiaries were carefully selected.

    Sokoto State Governor Dr Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has awarded contract for the construction of 11.6km Gawo, Darhela, Sifawa road in Bodinga local government area of the state.

    The contract is one of the many awarded, commissioned and executed by the governor to mark his 100 days in office.

    Flagging off the construction work which is expected to link Bodinga town, the headquarters of Bodinga local government with surrounding  communities, former governor of the state and one time minister, Alhjai Yahaya Abdulkarim lauded Governor Sokoto for the giant strides towards improving and impacting the lives of people of the state.

    The contract is initiated as part of the governor’s commitment under his rural development program designed to provide infrastructure to rural dwellers.

    Abdulkarim commended the governor for impacting positively on the lives of the citizens.

    “I am not amazed with the remarkable steps of the governor considering the track record and legacies of his mentor and father, former governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko who throughout his eight years as governor brought tremendous but positive change in the state,” he said.

    This, the former governor said, would include potable water, fertilizers for farmers, healthcare services, improved road network both rehabilitation and construction to further enhance and boost social and economic activities for the benefit of citizens in the state.

    Abdulkarim expressed optimism that more and better things to be provided for the rural and urban settlements across the state by Dr Sokoto were underway as he described the governor as  development oriented with focus and concerned about developing  infrastructure and ensuring  peoples wellbeing urging other governor’s to take cue.

    He however, remarked that upon completion of the road, rural areas would be opened to beneficial agriculture and economic activities, thus, guarantee smooth movement of farm produce as well people across surrounding communities.

    Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Dr. Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, has said that, for Nigeria to develop, it must liberate half of its population consisting of women from being undermined, underutilized and de-humanized.

    The Deputy Governor, a consultant Medical Doctor, who stated this in Kaduna yesterday while speaking at Private Sector Forum on Gender Responsive Supply Chains in Kaduna State, emphasized that, women encounter social norms and stereotypes that undermine their economic potentials and leadership, such as gender-based violence, discrimination, harassment, and bias.

    The event organized by African Development Bank, UN-Women and Zamani Foundation with women from the private sector as participants, was designed to train women who own businesses to understand and participate in public procurement process.

    The Deputy Governor said issues that concern women are always dear to her heart stating that, “as a woman and mother, I am daily confronted with these challenges. Women have less access to working capital, finance, technology, skills, and information than men, which limits their ability to start, grow, and sustain their “Also, women face increased care demands at home which reduces their time and attention for their businesses. Women encounter social norms and stereotypes that undermine their economic potentials and leadership, such as gender-based violence, discrimination, harassment, and bias.

    “These challenges not only affect women’s economic empowerment, but also hamper the overall growth and development in the private sector. Therefore, it is important to address these challenges and support women’s participation and benefit from the private sector opportunities.

    “If we want to make progress as a country, we must liberate half of our population, which consists of women, from being undermined, underutilized and de-humanized,” she said.

    Dr. Balarabe, however, assured that, Kaduna State Government is firmly committed to promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment in all aspects of its development agenda, as it believes that empowering women is not only a matter of right, but also a good economic strategy that can boost growth, reduce poverty, and enhance social cohesion.

    Earlier in her presentation, UN-Women’s Country Representative to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Beatrice Eyong said, only one per cent of procurement process in Nigeria go to women in business, hence the need to organize the training.

    Eyong who was represented by UN-Women Programme Specialist, Dr. Chukwuemeka Onyimadu said, UN-Women was not out to force the government to bend the procurement laws in favour of women, but wants to train women who own businesses to be able to compete favorably in public procurement processes.

    Founder/President Zamani Foundation, Amb Talatu P.Zamani-Henry said the meeting was organized to establish a private sector forum on engendering supply chains in Kaduna state and environs, adding that, “we must acknowledge that the journey in the private sector in Nigeria is not an easy one, despite the odds, we are forging ahead, leaving our mark, and paving the way for others to follow.”

    Bago to repair damaged Federal roads

    Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago, has declared that the state would no longer wait for the federal government to rehabilitate damaged federal roads across the state.

    He said the government would request refunds when the roads are repaired stating that the state of the federal roads across the state cannot be left unrepaired any longer due to non-response of the federal government.

    Speaking at the ground-breaking for the rehabilitation and construction of Minna township roads, Bago said,  “Niger state is the largest state in terms of landmass and has the highest number of federal roads. We will no longer wait for the federal government to do the roads for us.

    “We are discussing with the Presidency to see how we can ask for refunds for the jobs we are doing but notwithstanding, we are going ahead to do the roads”, he stated.

    The Governor also stated that in the next four years, the state would rehabilitate and construct 1,500 kilometers of roads across the state while he declared the extension of the Minna city gates with 22 kilometers to make the Minna Emirate 100 square kilometers.

    He said that there are 556 roads planned under aggressive urban renewal in the next four years as the government targets to expend N1 trillion on infrastructure in the next two years.

    Bago urged the youths to take advantage of the investment and urban renewal programs being undertaken by the government to empower micro, small, and medium businesses across the state.

    Commissioner of Works, Suleiman Umar, said the 202 kilometers of Minna township roads would comprise the rehabilitation of 14 existing roads, construction of eight new roads, and five flyovers while existing single lane roads would be dualized.

    He said that although this is the most ambitious urban renewal project the state has ever had, it is realizable and achievable.

    The Managing Director of CCECC, David Wong, assured the government that the company would ensure the use of local content in materials and human resources assuring the government that they would meet up with the target given to them by the state government.
