  • Why Okun leaders visited Tinubu, by ODA President

Why Okun leaders visited Tinubu, by ODA President

President of the Okun Development Association (ODA), the umbrella socio-cultural organisation of the Yoruba speaking people of Kogi State, Chief Femi Mokikan has clarified issues in the aftermath of the visit by representatives of the group to President Bola Tinubu in the Aso Rock Villa on Thursday, August 3.

The ODA meeting with the president centered on issues around the governorship of Kogi State. The compelling case of power rotation to Kogi West Senatorial District after over three decades of creation of Kogi State was tabled by the group. The ODA expressed Okun people’s unwavering support for the Tinubu administration and requested the president’s backing for Kogi West Senatorial District to have an opportunity to produce the next governor of Kogi State.

The news of ODA’s engagement with President Tinubu elicited excitement and commendation from across Okunland and Kogi West as a whole.

According to a statement after the meeting by his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngele, President Tinubu had assured the the Okun delegation of his commitment to thoroughly looking into their concerns, examining issues raised about marginalization and the need for fair representation in governance of Kogi State.

However, since after the visit, politically aligned individuals and groups of Okun extraction have taken to the social media to demand for explanations, alleging partisan motives while also expressing concerns about the composition of members of the delegation as truly representative of the ODA.

In the letter addressed to sons and daughters of Okun Nation, a copy of which was made available to The Nation, the ODA President expressively doused the tension.

He said the visit was entirely the idea of the ODA, initiated by the ODA and driven by the ODA, in conjunction with like minded groups such as Kogi West Elders Forum (KWEF), Okun Think Tank (OTT) and Kogi West and Central Forum (KWACF), among others, primarily to promote the “Okun Agenda” for governorship. He said the idea was conceived by the current ODA leadership four years ago, a period preceding the advent of the Tinubu Presidency, for the overall good of the people of Kogi West, towards balancing power equation amongst the component units of Kogi State.

    The ODA President’s letter reads:

“Good day sons and daughters of Okun nation at home and in the diaspora. This release would not have been necessary, but for the numerous calls and messages that I have received, and some of the write ups I have read in some Okun-linked platforms between the time some of our people visited the president yesterday (03/08/23 and now).
Some believed that the visit was embarked upon without the knowledge of the ODA since the ODA President was not among those who went on the visit. Some wondered if I was still the president. Some queried the composition of the delegation. Some politicized it. Why was this person included and that one was not included. There were even those who suggested that the visit was initiated and organized by a particular candidate. And so on and so forth.

“This intervention is to put the records straight. As the president of the ODA, I and my colleagues have for over a year been on the Okun for governor agenda, working with like-minded and not so like-minded individuals and groups from across our state, towards the actualization of our 2019 understanding with the executive governor of our state, that power would rotate to the West in 2023/2024.

“It is public knowledge that there are several stakeholder groups working on this same project. There is KWEF, OTT, KWACF, aside from others.
ODA has been an active participant in all these named bodies.
AS to be expected, each group has its own operational framework and strategy.

“Visiting the President of the federation was a strong consideration in almost all the groups. ODA, being a legal personality, by virtue of its registration with the CAC, and also being the only body authorized to speak for and on behalf of the Okun people, was in the forefront of making a request to the President for a visit on the same matter. The request was made on behalf of KWEF, OTT and ODA.

“The request got to the presidency for close to one month and we did not receive any confirmation of a date for the visit. At some point we followed up and got assurance that the request would be approved.
Immediately, KWEF and OTT were informed to give a list of those to represent them so I could combine all in a single list. This was done and I added the ODA and KWEF committee teams and sent ahead. Ordinarily, the ODA President should lead the delegation on such a visit. And that was the plan. The approval did not come soon enough as I expected. None of us had any control over that. Before the approval came, I had to travel out of the country for a family engagement. When it got to that point, I had to draft the speech that we would present during the visit and I left it with my colleagues in the KWEF committee to review and finalize, should the approval come while I was still away. It was on Tuesday this week, August 1st, that I got a message that we were to pay a visit at 3pm on Thursday August 3rd.
I immediately activated all the plans that were already on ground. I got another message at exactly 12:39pm yesterday, (the day of the visit) requesting to know since I was not going to be available, who would speak on our behalf. I immediately sent the person’s name. To the glory of God, the visit took place as planned.

“Let me add that none of the lists compiled by the various groups and given to me contained the names of any governorship candidate or elected official. I have always admitted that I am a poor student of protocols. With benefit of hindsight, I should have mentioned it to all our elected officials. The presence of our elected officials in the National Assembly should have been an added advantage. Lessons for the future.

“Notwithstanding, we benefitted tremendously from the existing relationship between Hon Leke Abejide and some others in the Villa. I must acknowledge and appreciate his role and that of one of our prides, Ambassador Shola Enikanolaye. Without their intervention, we most certainly would still have been waiting and expecting.

“Let us use the wisdom in our elders admonition when they say
a snake threatens. what does it matter whether it is the wife that kills the snake or it is the husband. The goal is to kill the snake.

“Please let us calm down and see the good part of this visit.
I confirm that I was a part of the process from the beginning to the end. Nobody has usurped the office of the President of ODA from me. Transition to another president will not happen until march 2024, by His grace.

“The visit was not to promote any particular candidate. The visit was primarily and solely to present a compelling case on behalf of our good people of Kogi West”.

  • Banks’ high interest rates stifling growth of non-oil export – Yakusak

Banks’ high interest rates stifling growth of non-oil export – Yakusak

The Executive Director/CEO, Nigerian Export Promotion Council NEPC, Ezra Yakusak, has lamented that lack of access to bank financial services by exporters is one of the major challenges stifling the smooth growth of the non-oil export.

The ED disclosed this at the capacity building programme for bankers in Abuja, with the theme, ‘Enhancing Non-Oil Export Growth through Effective Export Procedures, Documentation and Logistics’.

The programme was held to strengthen collaboration towards promoting export competitiveness to achieve the economic diversification agenda of the Federal Government.

This, he said, is due to high interest rates and low disbursement of credit facilities to financing non-oil export trade. It has also affected the nation’s non-oil export performance because most exporters lack the financial muscle required to set up modern export-related industries and ensure production of high quality products.

He said, “As you are aware, the non-oil export sector plays very important role in the economic development of our nation. The sector presents great opportunities for more Nigerians to participate in the global market space. It is on record that Nigeria is endowed with immense potentials in some of the world’s most traded products such as; cocoa, ginger, cashew, soya bean, sesame seed, palm oil, rubber, shea, gum arabic etc.

“However, statistics have shown that the country is not benefiting maximally from its vast export potentials because of a number of issues, such as: knowledge gap, access to finance, cumbersome procedures and documentation, poor packaging among others. These factors constitute major challenges being faced by exporters.

“Banks are one of the most important institutions in non-oil export trade. Without the banks, no formal export trade can be undertaken, because the various Nigerian Export Proceeds forms (NXPs) are usually processed by banks. In the year 2022, non-oil export performance reported that a total number of 30 banks participated in the issuance and processing of NXPs forms. This led to a total export value of $4.8billion, the highest recorded since the creation of the NEPC in 1976.”

The ED maintained that an in-depth knowledge of export procedures and documentation and effective management of export logistics is an invaluable asset in developing long-term business relationship with foreign buyers, which may increase the likelihood of repeat export contracts and referrals.

He said the NEPC as a responsible and responsive agency has identified capacity building as a priority for relevant stakeholders in the non-oil export value chain, adding that this is deliberate and strategic because the council believes that when key stakeholders like bankers, are equipped with the necessary export knowledge and expertise, they would work more efficiently to complement each other  towards the promotion of export business in the country.

Nigeria’s aviation sector to undergo safety audit

    Faith Yahaya, Abuja

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has said the country’s civil aviation sector will undergo safety audit before the end of this month.

The exercise is expected to lead to safer skies and boost adherence to accident investigation safety recommendations.

The bureau also stated that the audit, which will be conducted by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), will help reveal the safety status of the aviation sector.

The bureau, however, rated the country’s safety record as one of the best globally.

This was disclosed in Abuja on Friday at the closing ceremony of the Banjul Accord Group Accident Investigation Agency (BAGAIA) peer review exercise by the Director General of NSIB, Engr. Akin Olateru.

He said: “Nigeria will have its audit at the end of this month and our scorecard will be opened. All I can say is that Nigeria, as a country, has one of the best safety records because safety is measured in various ways.

“It is measured by the number of accidents, measured by number of fatal accidents, measured by the number of serious incidences and occurrences. The fewer occurrences you have, the better you are.

“There are some airlines in the world that have never recorded fatal crash and they have been around for over one hundred years; that is an indicator of safety.

“The safety record of a country can only be known through ICAO audit. It is the only way you can assess any country and we are doing our own audit in August. The report should be out by then and then the public will see our performance in terms of safety”.

On the importance of the review exercise, Olateru said it will aid investigators in training others and enhance safety for the entire region.

Also speaking, the BAGAIA Commissioner, Engr. Charles Erhueh, said the region has collectively recorded zero accidents in its airspaces in recent years.

He attributed the milestone to adherence to safety recommendations by operators and other stakeholders.

He said: “One landmark we have achieved collectively in the last few years is zero accidents in our airspaces, which have improved our collective safety records and removed our airlines from various blacklists worldwide.”

He added: “Nigeria is doing very well because we have seven countries. We have Serra Leone, Cape Verde, Ghana, Liberia, Guinea, and Gambia as member states of the region. Nigeria is one of the best in the world in terms of air accident investigation. They do things very well but we recommend that their findings should be properly documented.
