Vatsa’s family hails Tinubu for granting posthumous state pardon

The family of the late General Mamman Jiya Vatsa has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for granting a state pardon to the former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) minister, describing the gesture as a long-awaited vindication of his innocence.

The Council of State, on Thursday, approved the presidential prerogative of mercy for 175 persons across various categories, including the late General Vatsa.

The approval followed a presentation by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who conveyed President Tinubu’s recommendations based on the report of the Advisory Committee on the Prerogative of Mercy.

General Vatsa was executed in 1986, alongside nine other military officers, for an alleged coup plot against the regime of General Ibrahim Babangida.

In a statement issued in Minna on Friday, the family’s spokesperson, Jonathan Vatsa — a former Niger State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) — said the presidential pardon has brought immense relief and joy to the family after 39 years of sorrow.

He described the decision as an act of statesmanship that has “wiped away the tears of the family” and restored hope to the Gulu-Vatsa community in Lapai Local Government Area and the entire Niger State.

“Today is the happiest moment in the life of our family after 39 years of grief following the killing of our father, brother, and uncle. Though nothing can bring him back, we are consoled by President Tinubu’s compassion. He has written his name in gold, and history will forever remember him,” Vatsa stated.

He maintained that the alleged coup was a setup, claiming that the trial was “stage-managed” to eliminate General Vatsa out of envy and rivalry. He recalled that the late General Domkat Bali once admitted in an interview that the evidence against Vatsa was weak and that his execution was unjustified.

“The family still maintains that the late Vatsa was innocent of the coup. Justice can be delayed but not denied, and truth never expires,” he said.

While expressing gratitude to President Tinubu, Vatsa lamented that the late General’s wife and some of his children did not live to witness the vindication, but thanked God that some of his children and grandchildren are alive to see this long-awaited moment.

  • Why PDP should reward Gov Bala Mohammed with vice-presidential slot

Why PDP should reward Gov Bala Mohammed with vice-presidential slot

    • By Nasiru Hanga

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stands at a critical crossroads. After years of internal crises, factional battles, and dwindling influence, the party is gradually regaining its footing.

One man who has played a central role in this rebirth is the Governor of Bauchi State and Chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed.

Governor Bala Mohammed has not only proven himself as a competent leader in Bauchi but also emerged as a unifying force within our party at the national level. At a time when disillusionment and rancor threatened to rip PDP apart, his calm but firm leadership at the Governors’ Forum helped stabilize the ship.

Governor Mohammed built consensus where there was discord, rallied governors to speak with one voice, and restored confidence in the PDP as a viable alternative for Nigerians.

The importance of this achievement cannot be overstated. In Nigeria’s multiparty democracy, no political party can thrive without internal harmony. Bala Mohammed’s interventions gave PDP a fresh lease of life, convincing millions of our supporters across the country that the party still has the resilience and capacity to govern. It is therefore only logical that such loyalty, sacrifice, and leadership be rewarded.

Beyond party politics, Bala Mohammed’s record as governor speaks volumes. Under his stewardship, Bauchi has witnessed infrastructural renewal, improved healthcare delivery, agricultural support schemes, and a renewed commitment to education.

His governance style reflects pragmatism, inclusiveness, and a keen understanding of Nigeria’s diversity qualities that are indispensable in national leadership.

A shining example of his inclusive leadership is his accommodation of the Bauchi Christian community, both in government and in daily governance.

He has ensured their active participation in his cabinet, sponsored Christian pilgrims to Jerusalem, and hosted Christmas celebrations at the Government House acts that demonstrate his genuine commitment to unity and religious harmony.

He sees Christians in Bauchi as part of his family, and this rare leadership quality is what Nigeria needs at the national level.

Equally remarkable is his courage in addressing issues previous administrations avoided.

A case in point is his bold move to bring a permanent solution to the Tafawa Balewa Local Government crisis, a long-standing challenge that others chose to sidestep.

He has also tackled the lingering Bauchi water problem, effectively utilizing World Bank funds that had been left idle for years a testament to his foresight and managerial discipline.

Politically, Bala Mohammed’s stabilizing influence goes beyond Bauchi State. His strategic leadership kept the PDP safe from political undertakers who predicted its demise during the rise of the ADC.

Many who defected during the unveiling of ADC have since returned to the PDP a clear indication of his tactical acumen and political resilience. This is what true political calculation looks like.

He continues to play a key role in shaping the PDP’s national strategy, working to ensure that the party presents its best possible presidential candidate be it Peter Obi, Goodluck Jonathan, or other credible figures from the South showing that he prioritizes Nigeria’s unity and the party’s strength over personal ambition.

His decision to support zoning and sacrifice his own presidential aspiration for the sake of national balance underscores his patriotism.

Governor Bala Mohammed is also known for his confidence, eloquence, and fearlessness traits that earned him the traditional titles Kauran Bauchi and later of Daular Usmaniya.

He is the brain behind the formation of the Ministers’ Forum, where he supported the emergence of Kabiru Turaki (SAN) as a national leader. The forum continues to thrive as a space for policy dialogue and coordination among former ministers.

Let us also not forget his contributions to the historic Doctrine of Necessity, which helped bring stability to Nigeria during one of its most uncertain political moments.

His strong sense of nationalism is evident in the inclusivity of his projects whenever he commissions projects in Bauchi, he ensures that people from all parts of Nigeria are invited, fostering a spirit of unity.

Where there were no voices, Bala Mohammed’s voice always rings out in support of the people whether in debates over the tax bill or other national issues that affect ordinary Nigerians.

Even more telling of his character is his enduring loyalty to former President Goodluck Jonathan. Despite the change of power, Bala Mohammed has never spoken ill of his former boss a rare quality in today’s political landscape where opportunism often trumps loyalty.

The PDP has made mistakes in the past by sidelining loyal party men in favor of temporary expediencies. 2027 presents an opportunity to correct this. If the party is truly serious about reclaiming power and offering Nigerians a credible alternative, it must entrust critical positions to men of character, loyalty, and capacity.

Governor Bala Mohammed is such a man. His role in stabilizing the PDP after years of turmoil deserves recognition. Making him the Vice-Presidential candidate in 2027 would not just be a reward it would be a strategic masterstroke for a party that must blend experience with political stability to win back the trust of Nigerians.

The PDP must rise above sentiment and short-term politicking. It must be bold enough to recognize merit and loyalty. Bala Mohammed has earned it.

  • Why northerners should reelect Tinubu in 2027 -PEM

Why northerners should reelect Tinubu in 2027 -PEM

The Public Enlightenment Movement (PEM) has highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s projects in the north and the key gains for the region, which is why northerners should re-elect him in the 2027 general election.

PEM Coordinator, Nuhu Abdullahi, who addressed reporters, said the group was reflecting on the “real and tangible progress” that has taken place in the region under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu in the last two years under review.

The conference was held at Comfort Hub Hotel, Kano, featuring Kannywood actors and actresses, social media influencers and celebrities.

Abdullahi commended President Tinubu for what he described as “real and measurable progress” in Northern Nigeria since the beginning of the administration.

He said the group’s mission was to inform citizens about the Federal Government’s efforts in the region and to counter misinformation.

“This is not about politics. We are here to talk about facts and what the people can see with their eyes. ‘Seeing is believing,’ and progress is taking place here (north), and we need to recognise it,” he stressed.

The PEM coordinator listed several key federal projects across the North that have seen significant progress.

Among them are: The Kano-Kaduna Railway, which was at 15% under the previous administration, now stands at 53% completion. The AKK Gas Pipeline now 83% complete, a leap from minimal work previously.

The Kano-Maradi Railway has moved from 5% to 60%, with the potential to open up trade with Niger Republic.

“The newly established NELFUND education loan scheme benefitted by over 500,000 Nigerians.

“The Abuja–Kaduna–Kano Expressway that has seen 140km under construction in the first phase; Renewed Hope Housing Estates are underway, while food prices have reduced; and don’t forget that security in the North has also improved under Tinubu’s leadership,” he said.

Abdullahi also announced a second phase of federal projects that the group will be tracking and promoting as part of its enlightenment campaign. These include:

Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway; Kano and Kaduna Light Rail Projects; Akwanga–Jos–Gombe–Bauchi Road (439km); Sokoto–Zaria Dual Carriageway (275km, N824bn); and BUA Tax Credit Road (256km across Jigawa, Katsina, Kano).

Others are Zaria-Hunkuyi Road, Kano Northern Bypass, Kano-Maiduguri Road; NASENI innovation centre in Kano; 9th Mile–Otukpo–Makurdi Road Dualization (250km); and the Livestock RUGA project in Plateau, among others.

He pointed out that the creation of the Ministry of Livestock is a key policy step to revive the animal husbandry sector in Northern Nigeria.

Abdullahi urged the public to pay attention to ongoing changes rather than be swayed by political sentiments.

He noted: “Let us support what is working, not who is in power. Northern Nigeria is witnessing real development, and we owe it to ourselves to see it, understand it, and build on it.”

Highlight of the event was the commentary and video play of the documentary on President Tinubu’s projects and levels of completion across the north.

PEM is a non-governmental initiative focused on promoting civic education and awareness of federal development in the North.

  • Kebbi youths berate ex AGF over alleged attack on convoy

Kebbi youths berate ex AGF over alleged attack on convoy

The Kebbi Progressive Youth Coalition for (KEPYO) has cautioned former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN), against what it described as a “consistent display of victimhood politics,” following his recent claim that his convoy was attacked during a wedding ceremony in Argungu, Kebbi State.

The group, in a statement by its spokesperson Comrade Usman Musa in Birnin Kebbi at the weekend, described Malami’s reaction to the alleged incident as “an unnecessary escalation and an attempt to create political tension where none exists.”

It urged the former Minister to exercise restraint and desist from making statements capable of heating up the polity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“The 2027 election period is yet to be upon us. It is therefore unhelpful for a political figure of Malami’s stature to continually frame himself as a victim of orchestrated attacks each time he visits Kebbi,” the statement reads.

Read Also: Malami, APC lawmakers clash over ‘importation of thugs’ into Kebbi

“Such narratives not only cast the state in bad light but also risk destabilising the peaceful atmosphere for which Kebbi is known.”

The group noted that while every citizen, including Malami, has the constitutional right to free movement and association, responsible conduct demands that public figures exercise discretion, especially in politically sensitive times.

“As a former top government official and a prominent political actor, Malami should know better than to turn every personal visit into a media spectacle laced with allegations. If he intends to continue what appears to be a new hobby of frequent tours around the state, he should coordinate with relevant state security agencies to ensure adequate arrangements for his safety,” the statement added.

KEPYO further questioned the pattern of Malami’s public engagements in Kebbi, saying such high-profile movements were uncommon during his years as Attorney General of the federation.

“It is quite interesting that Malami, who was hardly seen mingling this freely while he held power as Attorney-General, now moves across Kebbi with large entourages and constant press attention,” the youth group said. “While he is free to reconnect with his political base, he must do so responsibly and without projecting every encounter as an assassination attempt or political ambush.”

The group described the repeated allegations of attacks as “victimhood taken too far,” warning that the peace of Kebbi state should not be sacrificed on the altar of personal ambition.

“The people of Kebbi have always prided themselves on peaceful coexistence. It is therefore imperative that political leaders refrain from rhetoric or behaviour that could inflame divisions or invite needless controversy,” it stated.

The coalition reiterated its call for all political stakeholders in the state to engage constructively and prioritise dialogue over sensationalism.

“We expect Malami and others with political aspirations to channel their influence toward promoting unity and development, rather than nurturing narratives that portray Kebbi as a hostile or unsafe state. Kebbi remains peaceful, and the youth are determined to keep it that way.”

While expressing support for law enforcement agencies investigating the alleged Argungu incident, the group emphasised that maintaining order and political tolerance is a shared responsibility.

“If Malami feels genuinely threatened, he should liaise directly with the Kebbi State Police Command and other relevant security outfits to put measures in place. What we do not need are public statements that inflame passions and divide the people along partisan lines,” the statement advised.

The Kebbi Youth Coalition for Peace and Development, a non-partisan organisation advocating good governance and social stability in the state, urged all political actors to focus on issues that advance the welfare of citizens rather than pursuing “attention-driven theatrics.”

Abuja Youth Forum urges stronger security measures in FCT

The Abuja Youth Forum has called for enhanced security measures across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) to ensure the safety of residents.

The group, led by Comrade Ayuba Danladi, expressed concern over recent security incidents in the capital, including the killing of Dr. Ifeanyi Ogbu, a former chairman of the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) FCT chapter, who was abducted alongside his children in Kubwa.

    His children are still missing.

The forum also cited the death of Somtochukwu Maduagwu, an Arise News anchor who lost her life during a robbery incident at her Katampe residence last week.

Highlighting the developments, the forum said there was a need for renewed focus on security to safeguard lives and property in Abuja.

It also noted reports of robberies, car thefts, and vandalism of public infrastructure in some parts of the city.

Danladi urged the FCT Administration and security agencies to intensify efforts toward protecting residents and to work closely with community stakeholders, including youth groups, traditional rulers, and religious leaders.

He emphasised that community-based policing, regular communication between authorities and residents, and rapid response to distress situations would go a long way in improving public safety.

The group further pledged its support to collaborate with security agencies and other stakeholders to help restore and maintain peace across the capital.

The beneficiaries, carefully selected after a merit-driven process, emerged from a pool of qualified applicants with Second Class Upper degrees in STEM disciplines. They excelled in a rigorous aptitude test overseen by an independent assessment committee, reflecting both academic brilliance and resilience. Drawn from across the senatorial district, these scholars will proceed to India for a two-year Master’s programme, with the first year dedicated to coursework and the second to groundbreaking research, culminating in the award of MSc degrees that will equip them to compete globally.

“This initiative is about producing a new generation of leaders and professionals who will return with the knowledge and expertise required to rebuild our communities and reposition Northern Borno. Education is the strongest foundation for sustainable growth, and by investing in our youths, we are investing in the destiny of our people,” Monguno declared.

  • Kaduna begins first-ever free sanitary pad scheme for female students

Kaduna begins first-ever free sanitary pad scheme for female students

…Experts hail governor Sani’s bold step on women’s health, dignity

A medical expert, Dr. Abuh Raymond, and his co-coordinator, Sumayyah Muhammad Sani, have called for free distribution of sanitary pads to young girls in Nigeria, the same way condoms are often given out freely for sexual protection.

They made the call on Thursday in Kaduna while speaking on the launch of the “Pad the Girl Initiative”, a government-backed programme aimed at promoting health, dignity, and empowerment among young women.

The initiative, described as the first of its kind in the history of Kaduna State and Northern Nigeria, was rolled out by the Uba Sani administration on September 20 at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

It targets over 40,000 female students across tertiary institutions with free sanitary pads and menstrual health education.

READ ALSO: I thought Boko Haram will end under Buhari, says Jonathan

Dr. Raymond and Sumayyah said the programme reflects “a bold, inclusive, and modern approach to governance under the visionary and compassionate leadership of Senator Uba Sani.”

According to them, menstrual health remains one of the least discussed yet most pressing challenges facing Nigerian girls, with many forced to miss classes or drop out of school due to lack of access to pads.

“This initiative is a practical demonstration of the Governor’s belief that if condoms can be distributed free in the interest of public health, sanitary pads must also be free in the interest of women’s health and dignity,” they said.

Governor Sani’s administration has also expanded scholarships for girls in STEM, strengthened laws against gender-based violence, promoted digital training, and supported vocational programmes for sustainable livelihoods.

Dr. Raymond and Sumayyah, who coordinate the Pad the Girl Initiative under the UBA Ambassadors Network, described the project as a “landmark intervention” and a historic step towards ensuring that no girl in Kaduna State is denied education or dignity because of her gender.

“Governor Uba Sani’s leadership is rewriting the narrative for Kaduna State and Northern Nigeria, ensuring equity and empowerment for the next generation. His unwavering commitment to the welfare of young women is truly making a difference,” they added.

  • APC North Central forum rejects state police

APC North Central forum rejects state police

The North-Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the National Assembly to reject proposals for the creation of State police in Nigeria, warning that such a move would endanger democracy, minority groups, and religious freedom.

The forum, in a statement on Friday through its chairman, Saleh Zazzaga, a member of the APC campaign council in the 2023 elections, reacted to Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s recent declaration that “the time for state police has come” during a court session marking the 2025/2026 legal year in Jos.

Rejecting the proposal, the Forum argued that state police would worsen insecurity, encourage impunity, and destabilize democracy.

“State police will only lead to anarchy and increased impunity across the country, and as a result, these calls should be rejected by all right-thinking Nigerians,” it said.

The group alleged that governors already exploit the Federal police despite lacking direct control, and warned that giving them full command of state police would be disastrous.

READ ALSO: What disqualified BBNaija housemates stand to lose

“As we speak, most governors are using the machinery of the state to intimidate, oppress, and harass minority groups and the opposition. We are afraid of how far they will go when they now have a full-fledged police force at their beck and call. State police will give them the license to do and undo,” the statement read.

The Forum noted that Federal police are already being misused to destroy businesses and properties of opponents, raising fears of far greater abuse.

“What they are doing now will be child’s play compared to what they will do when they have their own police force,” it warned.

According to the Forum, State police would become a weapon of oppression, “State police will derail the democratic system as it will be used to suppress dissent and turn governors into dictators.

“With state police, anybody seen as an opponent of government would be hounded, jailed, or worse still, lose their lives. Opposition will be criminalized.”

The Forum also expressed fears over religious implications in the North-Central region, warning, “We don’t want state police in the North-Central, which is a secular region with minority groups and diverse religions.

“We have observed that some governors in the region don’t want to accommodate minorities, including their religious practices.

“If you arm these governors with state police, they will criminalize the traditional practices and religions of minority groups.”

It further accused some governors of prioritizing religion over governance, emphasising that, “One of the biggest problems in Nigeria at the moment is that most governors are practicing religion more than governance.

“They believe in religious doctrines more than the Constitution. If you give them state police armed with AK-47s, what will be the fate of those who do not agree with them?”

The Forum maintained that creating State police would be counterproductive and could plunge Nigeria into crisis, urging President Tinubu, lawmakers, civil society groups, and Nigerians to resist the proposal.

“These are the reasons why we, the North-Central APC Forum, are urging President Bola Tinubu and members of the National Assembly, especially senators and representatives who have the interest of the country at heart, to reject calls for state police.

“State Police is an evil wind that will not blow anyone any good. We also urge civil society organizations and all Nigerians to reject this proposal,” the Forum noted.
