Rep. Agbese slams Bafarawa over criticism of Tinubu’s administration

…says Tinubu’s economic reforms yielding results

Philip Agbese, a member of the House of Representatives representing Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency in Benue State, has criticised former Sokoto state Governor, Attahiru Bafarawa, over his open letter to President Bola Tinubu.

In a statement, Agbese accused Bafarawa of distorting the realities of Tinubu’s administration and attempting to undermine its achievements.

He dismissed the former governor’s claims of authoritarianism and economic mismanagement, arguing that they failed to recognise the tough decisions necessary to stabilise Nigeria.

“I respect your decades of political experience and your service to Nigeria, and I acknowledge your right to express concerns about the current state of our dear country. However, as an elder statesman, your role ought to be one of guidance based on fairness and objectivity, rather than engaging in narratives that do not align with the realities on the ground,” Agbese stated.

The lawmaker also defended Tinubu’s approach to insecurity, emphasising that the challenges predated his administration and could not be resolved overnight.

He highlighted the president’s efforts in reforming the security sector, including appointing new military and intelligence chiefs and strengthening regional collaborations.

“Insecurity that has plagued Nigeria, from terrorism in the North-East to banditry in the North-West and IPOB insurgency in the South-East, did not begin under President Tinubu. The previous administration, despite its best efforts, struggled to fully contain these threats. No sincere observer of Nigeria’s governance landscape would dispute that the country was in dire straits when President Tinubu took office,” he said.

Agbese also tackled Bafarawa’s assertion that the administration was stifling opposition, arguing that Tinubu had been more inclusive than his predecessors.

According to him, the president has assembled a government based on merit rather than political affiliations.

“For the record, no Nigerian democratic President in history has demonstrated as much commitment to inclusivity as President Tinubu. This is evident in his carefully assembled cabinet; a diverse representation of the country, not just in terms of geography, but in professional expertise and competence,” he said.

On economic reforms, Agbese defended the removal of fuel subsidies and the restructuring of Nigeria’s financial system, stating that previous administrations had failed to make difficult but necessary decisions. He argued that Tinubu was correcting past economic mismanagement at great political risk.

“The removal of fuel subsidies, for instance, was not an easy decision, but it was a necessary one. The subsidy regime had become a black hole of corruption, benefiting only a few while draining national resources that could have been channeled into infrastructure, education, and healthcare,” he said.

He further dismissed Bafarawa’s claim that Tinubu was working towards a one-party state, describing it as “baseless” and a distortion of the president’s long history in opposition politics.

“The insinuation that he is now attempting to stifle the opposition is a contradiction that does not stand to reason. Tinubu himself rose to power through opposition politics. To suggest that he would now seek to undermine the very system he helped build is both ironic and unfounded,” Agbese said.

The lawmaker urged Bafarawa to adopt a more objective stance and contribute to national development instead of fueling division.

He maintained that while Nigeria faced serious challenges, Tinubu’s leadership was steering the country towards recovery.

Benue judicial crisis: Group seeks visa ban on Chief Judge, registrar, others

    • By Jide Orintunsin – Abuja

The faceoff in the Benue State Judiciary has taken a new turn with members of the United World Congress of Diplomats (UN-WCD) demanding visa ban on the Chief Judge and the Registrar of the court.

The diplomats also asked for global restriction on all individuals allegedly involved in judicial interference in Benue state.

The State Government and the Chief Judge, Justice Maurice Ikpambese have been at loggers head over allegations of granting wavier to petitioners of local government election tribunal among many other infractions.

Addressing journalists in Abuja on Thursday, UN-WCD Secretary, Ambassador Tunji Ashaolu, expressed concern that public confidence is being eroded on the judiciary due series of conflicting court pronouncements.

He complained that the ugly scenario is gradually spreading across the states of the country, citing similar incidents of conflicting Court judgements in Rivers and Osun states.

According to him such incidents “are completely against the core objectives of the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance (ACDEG) which are to: Promote adherence, by each State Party, to the universal values and principles of democracy and respect for human rights; and also the principle of the rule of law premised upon the respect for, and the supremacy of the Constitution and constitutional order in the political arrangements of the State Parties; which is Nigeria in this case. “

Ashaolu said the group had earlier pushed for similar visa ban for those allegedly involved in judicial interference in Rivers.

He said the crisis in Benue deserved special attention because of the security challenge in the state.

“The Benue State Chief Judge, the Registrar of the court, the current Senate Minority Leader, and all those who supported the actions of the Chief Judge publicly should be sanctioned and have their existing visas canceled and visa ban issued against them just as we advocated in the case of Rivers State and INEC officials who purposely sabotaged democratic principles during elections.

“Benue State is of particular interest to the international community having been under security threats which led to Internally Displaced Persons Camp, IDPs across the state.

“The human rights community has warned that, should the world allow Judicial Officers to destroy institutions like democracy and rule of law, the state would find it more difficult to develop.

“We have it in good authority that the National Judicial Council is yet to even constitute investigative panel to unravel the allegations against the Chief Judge, a resolution passed by the Benue State Legislative Arm of Government which recommended outright removal of the Chief Judge from office.

“We believe by now that the Chief Justice of Nigeria who is a proactive officer should have set up a probe panel to immediately investigate the chief Judge even if the NJC is not willing to investigate the previous petitions against the CJ, the recent one passed by the State House of Assembly and forwarded by the Benue State Government to the NJC should have been under investigation by now.

“In light of the reactions from the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and the National Judicial Council (NJC), we urge caution and restraint in passing judgment before a thorough investigation is conducted.

“The presumption of innocence and due process must guide our approach to addressing allegations of judicial misconduct.

“As the international community observes these developments, we emphasize the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring accountability for all public officials, including judges.

“Any acts of misconduct or abuse of power must be met with swift and decisive action to maintain public trust and confidence in the judiciary.

“We can assure you that we will continue to monitor the situation closely and advocate for ethical governance practices in Nigeria and beyond.

“The Forum called ” on the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation to initiate an independent panel to thoroughly investigate the allegations of financial irregularities and breaches of ethical standards attributed to Chief Judge Ikpambese of Benue State.

“It is essential to ensure that due process is followed and that justice is served in the interest of public trust and accountability.”

…links food price drop to govt’s agricultural initiatives

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Borno State, Dr. Abiso Kabir, has praised the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) for passing a vote of confidence in President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

Dr. Kabir, who serves as Chairman of Walwanne Group and was Deputy Director, Special Duties III in the APC Presidential Campaign Council for the 2023 elections, also welcomed the NEC’s decision to zone the party’s national chairmanship position to the North-West.

He described the move as a step toward strengthening the party’s internal structure.

Speaking in an interview in Abuja, he urged President Tinubu to acknowledge and reward the efforts of support groups that played a key role in his 2023 electoral victory.

“I urge Mr. President to find ways to recognise and appreciate the dedicated support groups that worked tirelessly to ensure his success in the last election,” he stated.

On economic matters, Dr. Kabir commended the federal government’s agricultural initiatives, crediting them with the recent drop in food prices.

He also lauded the efforts of the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, in tackling food inflation.

To sustain these gains, he called on the government to introduce subsidies on agricultural inputs, ensuring long-term food affordability.

He further emphasised the need for policies that promote both agricultural and political stability.

“We appreciate the ongoing efforts to lower food prices, but I appeal for subsidies on farm inputs to maintain price stability and prevent future spikes,” he added.

  • Tax reform bills: Sharia council, FCT Imams, Yadudu reject inheritance law, VAT rise, others

Tax reform bills: Sharia council, FCT Imams, Yadudu reject inheritance law, VAT rise, others

The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria, Committee of FCT Imams Initiative, Kano State Government and former Presidential Adviser Professor Auwalu Yadudu have raised concern about the proposed law on inheritance, saying it will infringe on the religious rights of Christians and Muslims.

The stakeholders stated this on Wednesday during their various presentations at the House of Representatives Public Hearing on Tax Reform Bills convened by the House Committee on Finance at the National Assembly Complex, in Abuja.

The four bills are: The Nigeria Tax Administration Bill, the Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Bill, the Joint Revenue Board Bill, and the Nigeria Tax Bill, which have been passed for a second reading by both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

In its presentation, the Sharia council represented by Professor Ahmed Bello Dogarawa, acknowledged the importance of tax reforms but strongly opposed the proposed inheritance tax, stating that it conflicts with Islamic law and religious practices.

He said: “While we appreciate efforts to streamline tax laws, we cannot support a provision that contradicts deeply held religious principles. Taxing inheritance in this manner would create unnecessary tension and legal challenges.”

The council also called for the modification of the clause on inheritance tax and called for the entire expunging of Section 4(3) Part 1, Chapter 2 of the Nigeria Tax Bill.

”The new clause should read as either of the following: “In this section, the reference to family income or however called, shall not affect the operation of distribution of the estate under the Personal Law of the deceased.”

The council also raised concerns over removing tax exemptions for religious institutions, warning that it could hamper their ability to provide community services.

“Any attempt to tax inheritance would be seen as an infringement on religious rights and could create legal disputes,” he said.

He added that if the federal government insists on maintaining inheritance tax, the bill should be amended to explicitly state that it does not apply to estates distributed under personal law (Sharia law, among others).

The council said the term “derivation” in the bill was vague and ambiguous, saying that it must be properly defined.

Dogarawa said that derivation should be explicitly defined as the location where actual consumption takes place.

In its presentation, the FCT imam committee represented by Dr Umar Aliyu, the Imam of Banex Mosque Abuja, said his association strongly opposed any form of taxation on religious institutions and faith-based organizations.

He said religious institutions play a crucial role in community development and welfare; therefore, imposing taxes on mosques and religious centres would create financial hardships and discourage charitable activities.

Like the Sharia council, the imams also opposed VAT increment but rather proposed a reduction of VAT rate from 7.5% to 5% or at best, the current rate of 7.5% should be sustained.

The association also proposed that the clause which seeks to stop the funding of TETFund, NASENI and NITDA by 2030 should be expunged from the bills.

The clerics also opposed the development levy, arguing that it would place unnecessary financial strain on religious institutions that are already playing a key role in supporting the needy.

Representatives from the Kano State Government voiced their general support for tax reforms but cautioned that certain sections would undermine state autonomy.

“We support tax modernisation,” one official said, “but we must ensure that this process does not come at the expense of states’ constitutional rights and economic stability,” Mahmud Sagagi who made the presentation said.

Yadudu, a professor of constitutional law, said the ‘supremacy clause’ and the repeated use of “notwithstanding” in the bills will undermine the supremacy of the Nigerian constitution.

“The act or the bill being proposed is given the supremacy status like the Constitution. Only the Nigerian Constitution has supremacy, and therefore if you were to enact any of these bills and you enact them on the basis that they are supreme over any other law which would contradict them, then that would be wrong, and that would be contrary to the Constitution,” he said.

He also observed that it is constitutionally wrong for the National Assembly to create tax boards for states and local governments as proposed in the bills.

Yadudu said the proposed Nigerian Revenue Service board should consist of representatives from the 36 states and the FCT to make it truly federal.

He said: “In the boards that you have established, I think it is the tax administration, you are establishing a board, management board, giving the name National Revenue Service, but having members that are only ex-officials mainly with the chairman of the board and six representatives of geopolitical thoughts.

“I think this goes contrary to the federal character of this nation in that you either call it Federal Revenue Service Board, in which case you can have any number of ex-officials of your members or if you want to make it truly federal, then you should have each state represented on that board. My preference is that it will be federal.”

  • The fact of the past between El-Rufai and Ribadu

The fact of the past between El-Rufai and Ribadu

    By Yushau A. Shuaib

In the weeks leading up to the 2007 Kano State gubernatorial election, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, then Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and a prominent member of President Olusegun Obasanjo’s cabinet, visited Kano to mediate between Governor Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau and Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The intervention came after a public feud between Shekarau’s administration and the EFCC over a report allegedly implicating the governor. At the time, any report from the anti-corruption agency that indicated wrongdoing could automatically disqualify a candidate from participating in elections. However, the constitutional authority to disqualify candidates rests with the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT), which is currently embroiled in controversy.

Mallam Sule Yau Sule, the governor’s spokesperson, had dismissed the EFCC report alleging Shekarau’s involvement in corruption. Despite Sule’s refusal to retract his statement or apologise to the anti-graft agency, he eventually resigned from his position and traveled for Umrah. The matter was resolved, and Shekarau was re-elected as governor on April 14, 2007, securing 671,184 votes on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), defeating his closest rival, Ahmed Bichi of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who garnered 629,868 votes.

As a writer, I have previously examined the roles of El-Rufai and Ribadu, two influential Northern political figures who rose to prominence under President Obasanjo’s administration. Both were celebrated as bold reformers. El-Rufai was credited with transforming Abuja through urban planning, modernisation, and monetisation policies, which earned him a close advisory role with Obasanjo. Conversely, Ribadu spearheaded aggressive anti-corruption campaigns, exposing high-profile figures such as Inspector General Tafa Balogun and Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, reinforcing Nigeria’s global stance against corruption.

Beyond their achievements, both were key members of Obasanjo’s influential Economic Team and played pivotal roles in the emergence of Umaru Musa Yar’Adua as the PDP’s presidential candidate in 2007 after the aborted Third-Term Agenda of Obasanjo.

Contrary to expectations, Yar’Adua did not serve as a puppet of the Obasanjo administration. He reversed key policies, such as petroleum price hikes and taxation reforms, asserting his independence, and move that did not sit well with Elrufai and Ribadu.

In my December 2009 article, “Still on El-Rufai and Ribadu on President Umaru Yar’Adua,” I explored the irony of their initial support for Yar’Adua, only to become some of his fiercest critics after his election. Speculations arose that El-Rufai and Ribadu had anticipated securing influential roles—possibly as Minister of Energy and Inspector General of Police, respectively—but were sidelined. Their subsequent disillusionment with Yar’Adua might have stemmed from their inability to influence his administration.

For various reasons, both men eventually left the country and later actively campaigned for Yar’Adua’s resignation as his health deteriorated and political instability ensued. They returned to Nigeria after Yar’Adua’s death.

Strangely, many were unaware of their growing discord as they both vigorously campaigned for Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s candidacy in 2023. However, their relationship took a dramatic turn when President Tinubu appointed Ribadu National Security Adviser, while El-Rufai’s ministerial nomination was abruptly halted. Many questioned why Ribadu did not intervene to assist El-Rufai in securing the ministerial position.

Their friendship has worsened, marked by escalating public disputes. The conflict centers on El-Rufai’s claim that Ribadu lied about never accusing President Bola Tinubu of corruption during his EFCC tenure, citing 2006–2007 records. The rift deepened after Hajia Naja’atu Muhammad’s TikTok video accused Ribadu of hypocrisy, referencing his past criticisms of Tinubu. Ribadu’s lawyer, Dr. Ahmed Raji demanded a retraction and apology, calling the allegations baseless and damaging to Ribadu’s reputation.

Speculation suggests that their relationship began to sour around 2010 when Ribadu accepted the Action Congress of Nigeria’s (ACN) presidential ticket for the 2011 elections without prior consultation with El-Rufai. This move reportedly led to feelings of betrayal and a subsequent estrangement. Despite their differences, both were seen together at various events, including weddings and burials, creating the impression of continued closeness. However, insiders noted that their personal and professional relationship had already fractured for over a decade.

While Ribadu later defected to the PDP in his bid for the Adamawa governorship, he could not secure the ticket in 2015. In contrast, El-Rufai won his governorship election under the APC. There were also reports that El-Rufai attempted to help Ribadu secure a Senate seat in 2019, but Ribadu rejected the offer, opting instead to run for governor. Similarly, other reports claim that El-Rufai opposed Ribadu’s gubernatorial ambitions in Adamawa in the 2019 and 2023 elections despite being a major power broker in the ruling APC.

Nuhu Ribadu, now a powerful figure as National Security Adviser under President Bola Tinubu, was surprisingly sidelined during the previous Buhari administration, much like Nasir El-Rufai’s current experience of being politically marginalized under Tinubu’s government.

This reversal of fortunes has exacerbated their animosity, with El-Rufai allegedly aligning with opposition figures to challenge Ribadu.

Unfortunately, a bond built on mutual respect and shared vision has degenerated into a spectacle of accusations and confrontations. For those who have consciously avoided engaging in partisan politics, this embarrassing political rivalry reinforces our decision to stay away from a landscape where friendships dissolve, and once-principled figures become unprincipled public actors.

Rather than escalating their disagreements, both men should be reminded of their shared history and efforts in shaping Nigeria’s political and economic landscape. Their actions today will shape their legacies and influence future generations.

It is not too late for them to reflect on the camaraderie they once shared and their collective impact on public service reforms and the anti-corruption movement.

I urge El-Rufai and Ribadu to sheath their swords and embrace peace, even if the ongoing drama is a strategic maneuver ahead of the 2027 elections. Reflecting on the alignments and realignments of political forces that culminated in the 2015 ouster of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, it is clear that nothing in politics is ever predictable.

At this critical juncture, peace and political stability should precede personal rivalry. Both men have contributed immensely to Nigeria’s development, and unnecessary feuds should not tarnish their legacies. Let them rise above their differences and focus on the greater good of the nation.

Renewed Hope Ambassadors laud Kebbi Governor, Bagudu over solidarity rally for Tinubu

…say massive turnout indication Nigeria, Kebbi working for the masses

One of Nigeria’s leading political groups, the Renewed Hope Ambassadors Network (RHAN), has credited the massive turnout at the recent political rally in Kebbi State to the achievements of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the goodwill of the state’s leaders.

RHAN, which played a key role in mobilizing support for Tinubu during the 2023 presidential election, specifically praised the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Abubakar Bagudu, and Governor Nasir Idris as pivotal figures steering the state’s political landscape.

It will be recalled that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kebbi State officially launched its campaign on Wednesday for the re-election of President Tinubu and Governor Idris ahead of the 2027 elections.

The mega rally, tagged, “We Stand with Tinubu and Kauran Gwandu,” took place at the township stadium in Birnin Kebbi, drawing prominent political figures, including Minister Bagudu; Governor Idris; Hon. James Faleke; Minister of State for Education, Yusuf Tanko Sununu; and several others.

Senator Bagudu, while speaking at the event, said both Tinubu and Governor Idris deserved a second term based on their performances in less than two years in office.

Read Also: I will no longer look for trouble – Portable

Reacting through a press statement on Friday, The Renewed Hope Ambassador Network, said the report received from the Kebbi chapter of the Network, shows “APC is the party to beat, any day, anytime”.

“We have said this repeatedly that, any Governor who performs well in the office, will make campaigns easier for his return or the return of his party.

“The foundation for the overwhelming support given to APC in Kebbi State was laid by His Excellency, Atiku Bagudu while he was the Governor. His good works and legacies are still there to speak for him.

“While he was leaving, he also blessed the state with a performing Governor, in the person of His Excellency, Nasir Idris. The Governor and his predecessors have enjoyed the support of the people, and by extension, our party is widely accepted today because of them.

“The state is known for peace, unity and progress, because the leaders are also at peace with each other. We have heard and seen states where cold wars exist between the Governors and their predecessors, in such states, development is too far from them and the fate of the party is dangling on the balance, as we move towards another election circle”, said Hon. Ahmed Yahaya, Spokesman of the Network.

Yahaya added that, through the Honourable Minister who is in charge of the budgetary allocations of the federation, the government of President Tinubu was able to allocate multi billion naira projects to the state, in both the 2024 and 2025 fiscal years, saying, by the time the government would be 4 years, the state would have been transformed.

He said, “In less than two years, President Tinubu, through the effort of the Minister, has initiated several people-oriented projects in Kebbi State.

“Some of the key federal projects in the state, like the Natsini-Kangiwa-Kamba Road, awarded at N35 billion, the Malamfari-Ngaski-Warah Road, and ongoing work on the Sokoto-Kebbi-Badagry Superhighway and the Koko-Mahuta-Dabai Road, are pointers to the many laudable achievements of this administration.

“Also, the rehabilitation and construction of 30 km within the 127 km alignment of Biu-Kangiwa-Kamba-Gaya-Niger Republic Road, awarded at N39.6 billion; the construction of Malando Garin Baka Ngaski Wara Road CH.0+000 CH.79+586 at N86.3 billion; Koko-Besse-Zaria-Kala Road at N13.7 billion; and the 1,000 km Sokoto (Ilela – Badagry (Agbara) Superhighway (Section 1, Phase 1A) Kebbi section worth N428.3 bilion; are all glaring and signs that this government means well for the people of the State”.

The group further stressed that, with projects worth over 600 billions in just 2 years, the people of the state would have no option but to pray continually for the President Tinubu and Governor Idris government to succeed.

Youth groups hail Tinubu for appointing Turaki as NWDC finance director

Several youth groups have commended President Bola Tinubu for appointing Dr. Sanusi Turaki, former Director-General of the Zamfara State Emergency Management Agency, as the Director of Finance and Supply for the North-West Development Commission (NWDC).
