We weren’t tortured in DSS custody, say released protesters

A few days after their release, some protesters detained during the August 2024 #EndBadGovernance demonstrations have denied experiencing any torture while held at the Department of State Security (DSS) office in Kaduna State.

Their statements contrast with those of Khalid Aminu, who alleged he was tortured, brutalized, and denied family contact by DSS operatives while detained at the same Kaduna facility.

“What I went through, what we went through was inhumane, I can’t even begin to tell you everything,” Aminu had told a popular television station, Channels TV.

The protesters, released about a month ago, told journalists in Kaduna over the weekend that they were surprised by Aminu’s allegations, insisting that they faced no mistreatment during their detention.

They clarified that they were Disc Jockeys (DJs) who had provided music at the protest in Kaduna and were not among those taken to court in Abuja. Their release came in early October 2024, following a review by the new DSS Director General, who, upon assuming office, determined they were innocent.

Dahiru Hamza, also known as DJ Zariya, from Tudun Wada, Kaduna, stated that “their release followed the DSS DG’s decision upon realizing their innocence.”

He said: “I was arrested on the 8th of August, 2024. We were detained, but we were neither tortured nor starved. However, we were released without having to pay any bail and were asked to go and collect our sound systems on the orders of the new DG, DSS.”

Hamza shared that he was misled by some protest organizers who assured him that security agencies had approved the demonstration.

He also called on the government to increase employment opportunities for the country’s youth.

Isa Abdullahi, known as DJ SP, who also performed in Kaduna, denied experiencing any torture during his time in DSS custody.

He mentioned that he had no trouble communicating with his wife while detained.

He commended the DSS Director General for “ordering their release without any conditions or charges.”

According to Abdullahi, Khaleed, the protest coordinator who hired the DJs, had allegedly informed them that security clearance for the event had been obtained.

Khaleed was also released, with all charges dropped on the Director General’s orders, allowing him to reunite with his family.

AbdulRazaq okays three months bonus for workers

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has approved three months financial bonus for civil servants, including local government workers.

The bonus is equivalent to pay as you earn (PAYE) obligation recently implemented, following the payment of N70,000 minimum wage to workers.

The new tax regime has generated bad blood between organised labour and the state government.

The emergency support measure will last between October and December, according to a statement by the Commissioner for Finance, Dr. Hauwa Nuru.

“This bonus has been approved as a buffer to bridge the gap the correct PAYE deduction may have wrought on the newly implemented minimum wage.

“It is meant to serve as a soothing balm as workers adjust to the PAYE that was just correctly implemented in line with the Personal Income Tax Act,” she said.

“The payment of the bonus is effective from October and will run till December. This is a significant step by the governor to support workers.”

The statement added that workers who had not registered with the Kwara State Residents Registration Agency (KWSRRA) should do so  ‘’because anyone without it will not get the bonus for November and December.’’

  • Plateau Community protests suspension of monarch, urges governor to rescind decision

Plateau Community protests suspension of monarch, urges governor to rescind decision

People of Bashar in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State have rejected the suspension of their traditional ruler, Rekna of Bashar, Alhaji Abdullahi Idris Isa, by the state government.

Plateau State government had ordered the suspension of the traditional ruler following protests by some concerned citizens of the kingdom who alleged anomalies in the selection process of the monarch, following the death of his predecessor.

But the people, through the Bashar Communities’ Development Association (BACODA), say the suspension is illegal, as his selection had been conducted and concluded since 2022.

Addressing newsmen at the NUJ Press Centre on Friday, Chairman, BACODA, Dr. Zakari Muhammed, described the suspension as strange, as Isa is the highest traditional ruler in Bashar Chiefdom.

They stated that the press conference was “to demonstrate the weighty concern of our communities on this dangerous and disturbing new precedent and unfortunate trend.”

In the text of the press briefing, BACOBA said: “You will recall that following the death of Alhaji Adamu Idris, the late Rekna of Bashar on the 24th day of September, 2022, a new Rekna of Bashar, in person of Alhaji Abdullahi Idris was selected by the kingmakers since 2022.

“We have handy a complete detailed report of the selection process showing clearly that all the stakeholders involved in the selection of the Rekna of Bashar duly participated in the said process which was conducted since 2022.

“The process was also captured on video and submitted to the Government since 2022. The report clearly showed that the names of the nominees, list of attendance of kingmakers, ballots casted for the candidates, recommendation of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs amongst others.

“For the avoidance of doubt and for record purposes, no participant had challenged the selection in any Court of Law since 2022.

“It is apparent from the report there was absolute compliance with the necessary provisions of the law regulating the selection of the Rekna of Bashar in 2022.

“Upon the completion and submission of the report of the selection by the five-man committee constituted by the state government who oversaw the selection process, Rt. Hon. Barrister Simon Bako Lalong, the former Executive Governor of Plateau State in the exercise of his powers, appointed Alhaji Abdullahi Idris, as the new Rekna of Bashar.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Rekna of Bashar received his appointment letter on the 5th of January, 2023 and was installed and presented with the second-class staff of office by the Executive Governor on the 23rd February, 2023.

“It is necessary to put on record further that the appointment of the new Rekna was approved by the Governor only upon the receipt of the recommendation of the report dated 29th December, 2022, from the Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, HRM Da. Jacob Gyang Buba.

“The recommendation in clear terms attested to the fact that the selection of the new Rekna was done in accordance with the provisions of Plateau State Legal Notice No. 11 of 1991. We have handy a detailed report justifying the process, recommendations, appointment, installation and ascension to the throne by the Rekna of Bashar, which processes were carried out since 2022.

“You will also recall that this review process only started and subsequently gathered momentum thereafter sometimes on the 8th day of July 2024 when a faceless group named Concerned Stakeholders of Bashar Chiefdom held a press conference calling on Government to review the selection concluded since 2022.

“As laughable at it seemed at first, a counter press conference was also held on the 10th of July, 2024 to correct the inaccuracies, misrepresentations or falsehood peddled by the said press conference for the purpose of setting the records straight for the present and the future.

“In the same vein, an interview was further granted on Monday, the 30th of September 2024, following the submission of memo to the committee recently constituted by the State Government to look into the issues of complaints related to the selection of the Rekna of Bashar at the Ministry for Local Governments and Chieftaincy Affairs.

“From the aforesaid, any review process is clearly rendered unnecessary with clear reference to the existing report and the established actions of Government; however, to our greatest surprise and disbelieve, we have received information that the Rekna was instructed to step aside pending the finalisation of the committee’s findings.”

The community said the action of the state government has created tension among the people and called on the state government to rescind its decision.

“We therefore strongly request His Excellency, Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, to ensure justice in this matter, stand by the oath he took to protect his people without fear, favour or ill will, nor allow any sentiments or considerations to influence his official decisions. We urge that the dignity attached to our long cherished tradition of Bashar people be respected in all official decisions. May God take the lead in this matter.

  • First Lady, Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu lead others in Walk to raise cancer awareness

First Lady, Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu lead others in Walk to raise cancer awareness

Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has emphasized the importance of cancer awareness and early detection across the country.

She noted that public awareness is vital to combating the disease, as it promotes early detection, which is essential in addressing this life-threatening illness.

Similarly, the Founder of Medicaid Cancer Foundation, Zainab Shinkafi Bagudu, echoed the call for greater public awareness about cancer, stressing that it is the most effective approach to combating the disease.

The First Lady gave this advice on Saturday in Abuja during the Medicaid Cancer Foundation’s 10th annual Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign, titled “Walk Away Cancer at 10.”

The 5-kilometer walk through Abuja city center, with over 4000 participants from across the country was aimed at promoting awareness about cancer, highlight the importance of early detection, encourage support for patients, and honour those who have lost their lives to the disease.

Represented by the wife of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hajiya Fatima Abbas Tajuddeen, the First Lady Tinubu, who commended Zainab Bagudu for her relentless efforts in promoting cancer awareness across Nigeria, emphasized the need for regular check-ups, including breast cancer screenings, to improve early detection and treatment.,

“Cancer affects us all, directly or indirectly,”nshe said

Urging Nigerians to support cancer research and initiatives that provide care and assistance to those affected, Tinubu encouraged everyone to prioritize cancer prevention and build a future filled with hope and resilience.

“As we walk away from cancer, let’s walk towards hope, resilience, and a brighter future,” she stated, calling for a united effort in creating a Nigeria where cancer no longer holds anyone back, the First Lady added.

On her part, Bagudu, who was recently elected as the President of the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), noted that the impact of awareness becomes immeasurable when considering the disease’s toll on individuals, communities, and the nation’s economy.

She explained that a well-informed public is better equipped for prevention, and government policies become more effective in prevention, detection, and care.

According to the former First Lady of Kebbi State, who emphasized the importance of sustainability, the Medicaid Cancer Foundation’s dedication to breast cancer awareness over the past decade demonstrates how critical the sustainability of policies and programmes is to the success of health interventions.

She explained that it was this commitment drives the Foundation’s ongoing efforts in public awareness, as well as its advocacy for policy change and sustainable government action.

She also highlighted the impact of the annual walk in spreading the cancer message to a wider audience, reaching beyond elites and urban centers to educate those who may not fully understand or know how to address the disease.

She said: “The key message of this Walk is that sustainability is key in all our interventions, particularly in health and more especially in an issue like cancer that is poorly understood, misunderstood and also poorly treated in our countries.

“So this year we decided to honour heroes, that is those that we have lost to cancer. We always celebrate them and we always encourage the people that are living with cancer to go through the disease knowing that there’s support for them, push for government policies, push for change in governmental policies and also to encourage well-to-do individuals and corporate bodies to donate and raise funds for cancer patients”.

Explaining the Foundation’s choice to stage a walk for the campaign rather than other options, she said, “I believe the walk has been highly effective in drawing attention to the cause in both rural and urban areas.

“I often get asked how does a walk in Abuja translate to awareness in a village in Kebi for instance but the truth is we use a lot of influencers.

“We exist in a day where media is very powerful both social and electronic and even paper media and the people in the villages get to hear those messages.

“As long as you have the influential voices present to carry that message they hear the message and what is our message? Early detection, early detection, early detection.

“We want women, men, children, doctors, physicians to be more aware of the things that cause cancer, of how to pick up the disease and to encourage people to go through screening, have their vaccinations so that we can overcome the burden of cancer”.

She explained that a key purpose of the awareness campaign is to correct misconceptions about cancers, such as the belief that breast cancer only affects women, saying, “Not at all. One out of every hundred cases of breast cancer is a man.

Read Also: FUDMA honours First Lady Saturday

“Yes, women are more but men, that one in a hundred also happens.

“So it’s important that we encourage the men to also come out to tell them that they can get breast cancer as long as they have breast tissue.

“It may not be the same size as those of women but men have breasts and so they get breast cancer, so, we want them to be aware that breast cancer is a killer and it also affects men.

“So, this is what this awareness effort is all about, spread the knowledge about the disease, how to prevent it, catch it early, treat it because it’s treatable when caught early, which will eliminate a whole lot of anguish to the individual, the family and the community,” she noted.
