    Upgrade survey generals to extra ministerial status, Adebomehin urges governors

    The Surveyor General of the Federation, Abuduganiyu Adebomehin, has urged state governments to upgrade the status of State Surveyor General Offices to extra-ministerial offices.

    He emphasized that this elevation is crucial for sustainable infrastructural development, which relies heavily on the input of surveying professionals.

    In a statement on Wednesday by Sani Datti, the Head of Press and Public Relations, speaking at the 58th annual general meeting of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS) in Edo state, Adebomehin highlighted the significance of mapping in human development.

    According to him, given the profession’s reputation for precision and accuracy, surveying plays a vital role in accurately determining point positions, distances, and angles between them.

    Consequently, he emphasized that achieving enduring infrastructure development without the expertise of surveyors would be exceedingly challenging, if not impossible.

    He said: “Virtually without surveying there is nothing one can do; look at the ground there is surveying, in the sea there is surveying.

    “If you want to see what isn’t visible to the eyes engage in surveying techniques, and very soon when we talk about robots coming to give food from a restaurant is surveying because that is precision”.

    The President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Matthew Ibitoye the role of Surveying becomes critical to human development considering that the inability to identify ‘what’ and ‘where’ its resources are has been identified as one of the factors impeding the speedy development of any society.

    He said it is not surprising that the best-developed countries are classified as developed because their cities are well-mapped through a comprehensive mapping program compared to developing countries.

    Given this, he said governments must prioritize the issue, as it is fundamental to solving many environmental and related problems in the country.

     “The significance of surveying in any meaningful development recorded in all sectors of our country’s economy cannot be overstated. Surveyors are the custodians of accurate geospatial information, and the country cannot afford to overlook the importance of accurate, accessible, and up-to-date spatial data for national development and governance”.

    “I call on governments to declare a State of Emergency on Mapping in Nigeria at small and medium scales in an effort to reposition Nigeria as a prime global investment destination in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu”, he said.

    According to him, this will help in mobilizing resources and prioritization efforts to systematically update and expand mapping coverage, ensuring accurate spatial data is available for planning, decision-making, and development purposes across all sectors.

    The lithium plant, a joint venture between the Kaduna state government and Ming Xin Mineral Separation Nigeria Ltd, is worth $20 million, with plans to increase it to $25 million within the next two years. This investment is set to create over 3000 job opportunities and positively impact the host community, contributing significantly to the state’s economic growth and development.

    In partnership with StarAgri West Africa Ltd, the Kaduna state government has launched the Agri-market initiative, worth $122 million. This investment will transform the agricultural landscape, generate economic growth and employment opportunities, and promote sustainable growth and prosperity. The initiative will create a total storage capacity exceeding 3 million Metric Tonnes, revolutionize connectivity between warehouses and farming communities, and ensure efficient supply chain management and reduced post-harvest losses. This will not only boost agricultural production but also enhance the livelihoods of smallholder and extension services personnel.

    Furthermore, Governor Uba Sani has unveiled Nigeria’s first L-CNG station in Kakau, Kaduna State.     EFCC vs Yahaya Bello: Kogi youths blast northern group over allegations

    The Kogi Youth Leaders Forum (KYLF) has criticised a northern group for accusing Governor Alhaji Usman Ododo of protecting his predecessor, Yahaya Bello, from prosecution.

    KYLF described the allegations as baseless and politically motivated, urging that Ododo be allowed to focus on his duties as governor.

    In a statement on Tuesday, KYLF convener, Benjamin Oguche, wondered why Yahaya Bello’s trial by the EFCC has become a tool for political opportunists to exploit for their gain.

    He stated that the Northern group’s call for President Bola Tinubu to intervene and stop Ododo from shielding Yahaya Bello reinforces KYLF’s longstanding belief that the media hype surrounding the former governor’s trial is politically driven.

    He noted that influential forces both within and outside the state are determined to bring Bello down.

    He said: “From the malicious call of the northern group, it is now clear that Yahaya Bello’s ordeal is just beyond trial for alleged money laundering. It is a clear political witch-hunt, persecution, and giving the dog a bad name just to kill it.

    “Interestingly, the man in the eye of the storm does not shy away from making himself available to provide answers on how he presided over the affairs of our state and left a legacy of honour and pride.

    “Accusing Ododo of shielding a man who is not on the run is not only childish but laughable. It is one of their many ploys to distract the governor with trivialities and irrelevancies to achieve their nefarious aims.

    “Like we have raised in the past, how much was the budget of Kogi in 2016 that the governor was accused of looting over N80bn? For the avoidance of doubt, the state only received N39bn from FAAC in 2016. The onus therefore is on those raising the hate-induced allegation to prove where the fund they are alleging was stolen came from.

    “For a matter that is already in court to dominate the front burner in their discourse, it only amounts to a mob action against a man whose offence is nothing but standing by and defending the welfare of his people.

    “Yahaya Bello is not the only politically exposed person facing prosecution but we keep wondering why feather-weight elements have latched onto it to vent out accumulated hate.”

    While calling for an end to the media trial and persecution of Yahaya Bello, KYLF called on Governor Ododo to remain focused on delivering effective service to the people of the state in line with a contract agreement he has made with them.

    Kano ruling unambiguous, Abba Yusuf must resign, says Coalition

    The Coalition for Defence of Justice and Rule of Law, a group of civil society groups in Nigeria, has called on Kano Governor Abba Yusuf to resign from office immediately.

    The demand was based on Governor Yusuf’s neglect of the latest court ruling annulling the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido as the Emir of Kano.

    In a statement by Comrade Mohammed Bello, the Coalition accused the Governor of blatant disregard for the rule of law, persistent abuse of power, and egregious violation of human rights.

    Bello said the recent judgement by Justice Abdullahi Liman of the Federal High Court, Kano was unambiguous and a clear rebuke of Governor Yusuf’s actions, which were deemed illegal and unconstitutional.

    Despite this, he said Governor Yusuf has chosen to ignore the court’s decision, insisting on perpetuating illegality and disrespecting the judiciary and traditional institutions.

    Bello added that this brazen disregard for the rule of law is a clear indication that Governor Yusuf is not fit to continue in office.

    “The Coalition for Defence of Justice and Rule of Law, a collective of civil society groups in Nigeria, calls on Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State to resign from office immediately,” the statement said.

    “This comes on the heels of the governor’s blatant disregard for the rule of law, his persistent abuse of power, and his egregious violation of human rights.

    “The recent judgement by Justice Abdullahi Liman of the Federal High Court, Kano, unequivocally set aside the reinstatement of Sanusi Lamido as Emir of Kano. This ruling was a clear rebuke of Governor Yusuf’s actions, which were deemed illegal and unconstitutional.

    “Despite this, Governor Yusuf has chosen to ignore the court’s decision, insisting on perpetuating illegality and disrespecting the judiciary and traditional institutions. This brazen disregard for the rule of law is a clear indication that Governor Yusuf is not fit to continue in office.

    “Furthermore, Governor Yusuf’s first year in office has been marked by a relentless campaign of intimidation, harassment, and persecution of perceived opponents, including Emir Ado Bayero. His administration has been characterized by a gross abuse of power, with blatant disregard for human rights and the rule of law.”

    The Coalition for Defence of Justice and Rule of Law, therefore, noted that the governor has betrayed the trust placed in him by the people of Kano State and his continued occupation of the office of governor is a mockery of democratic institutions and a threat to the stability of the state.

    “Failure to resign, Nigerians will hold him responsible for anything that goes wrong in Kano,” the Coalition warned Governor Yusuf. “We will occupy the Kano Government House, Kano House in Abuja, and other strategic locations to express our rejection of his continued stay in office.

    “The people of Kano deserve better, and we will ensure that their voices are heard. We urge the good people of Kano State to remain calm and peaceful in the face of this crisis.

    “We assure them that we will continue to monitor the situation and take all necessary steps to ensure that justice and the rule of law are upheld.”

    Kwara Gov excited as Army launches CBT Centre in Igbaja

    Kwara Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq on Thursday advocated more appreciation for the sacrifices of the security agencies, including the Nigerian Army.

    He said the military has played important roles to support civilian authorities at all times, including at a time when the country was under intense pressure from hostile non-state actors.

    The Governor spoke in Igbaja, Ifelodun LG of the state, at the commissioning of a Computer Based Testing (CBT) center, a special intervention project of the Chief of Army Staff (CoAS), Lieutenant General T. A. Lagbaja.

    The project was executed by Major General Adelokun Eyitayo, a serving military officer and native of Igbaja Land, who also launched his three books, titled: ‘Life of Prince Daud and Spirituality; Tears for Suni and Titi; and The Boy on the Highland’.

    “This Computer Centre means a lot for the socioeconomic growth of this community. Not only does it nudge members of the community towards acquisition of necessary skills for this age; it opens up new frontiers of socioeconomic benefits for Igbaja and communities around it,” the Governor said.

    “I am also fascinated by the spirit behind this project. It is timely and necessary. The need for better military-civil relations cannot be over-emphasized. Recent developments in our country again suggest a need to deepen citizens’ appreciation of the sacrifices that our security forces make to keep us safe, stabilise the fabric of our society, and ward off every threat against the Nigerian state.

    “Over the last two decades, the military has played very important roles to support civilian authorities at all times, including at a time when our country came under intense pressure from hostile non-state actors.”

    AbdulRazaq commended the Federal Government and the Chief of Army Staff for establishing the CBT centre that he said will aid skill acquisition and boost socioeconomic growth of the area.

    “We therefore cannot thank the federal government and our military enough. We must appreciate and honour members of our security forces, including military personnel deployed in internal operations and during emergencies, and cease all attacks on them,” he added.

    The commissioning attracted various dignitaries, including the CoAS  Lieutenant General T. A. Lagbaja, who was represented by Maj Gen Obinna Onubogu; the Elese of Igbajaland Oba Ahmed Awuni Arepo III; and Igbaja CBT Project Executor Major General Adelokun Eyitayo; among others.  

    Lagbaja said the execution of the project further affirmed the transformational drive of the Nigerian Army towards achieving its constitutional responsibility through a non-kinetic line of operations.

    The Army Chief thanked Governor AbdulRazaq and the people of the state for their continued support for the operations of the Nigerian Army.

    “The Nigerian Army has received tremendous support from your government. It is also gladdening to note that we have enjoyed cordial working relationships with you over the years, and your support has contributed immensely to our operational success within the state and the entire North Central region,” he said.

    Maj Gen. Eyitayo thanked CoAS for the approval of the project and his unwavering support for its delivery.

    He also appreciated the Governor for directing the purchase and supply of his three books for the use of students of public secondary schools in the state.

    The Governor, meanwhile, attended the 2024 Igbaja Day celebration, where he urged the people of Igbaja to continue to recognise the rich cultural heritage and diversity that makes the community to be unique.

    He congratulated the Elese of Igbaja, the Jagunmolu of Igbaja and founder of Al-hikmah University Chief Oladimeji Igbaja, and all sons and daughters of Igbaja community on the celebration, requesting them to continue to unite for accelerated growth.

    “Let us embrace and celebrate our diversity, and continue to build bridges of understanding and empathy,” the Governor said.

    “As you are aware, our administration has embarked on various projects that touched the lives of everyone across the state, including Igbajaland. We will continue to do more to improve the lives of our people.”

    Chief Oladimeji, who was excited by the Governor’s culture of arriving early for events, praised AbdulRazaq for time management, and how the administration has executed many laudable programmes and projects in the town and elsewhere.

    However, the 2024 edition “aims to celebrate and critically examine Nigeria’s quarter-century of uninterrupted democratic governance, discussing its future prospects and possibilities,” according to a statement by the Publisher of   THISNIGERIA, Mr. Eric Osagie 

    “The Gold Prize Award will be presented to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding contributions to the nation’s democratic development.

    “Our 2024 Awardees are persons who made the critical difference in the discharge of their duties, with uncommon zeal and commitment to the common good of the citizens and the country,” the statement read. 

    Set to receive the prestigious THISNIGERIA Gold Prize for his “Infrastructural revolution and Exceptional Leadership” is the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike. 

    According to a survey conducted by Public Sector Performance Index, PSPI, on behalf of the newspaper organisation, the FCT, has within eight months of Wike’s tour of duty, witnessed remarkable turnaround in infrastructural renewal, aggressive pursuit of developments across the Territories that make up the Federal Capital City.

    The report states that “What HE Nyesom Wike has done remains unprecedented in the annals of FCT Administration. He has continued to impact substantially not only on road networks in the city, but you can also find his bold imprints in the security, health, and education sectors.”

    Apart from Wike, other winners of the Gold Prize awards are: Gov. Kabir Abba Yusuf of Kano State; Gov Umo Bassey Eno of Akwa Ibom State.

    While Yusuf will go home with the Courage in Leadership award, Eno clinches the award for Peace Building and Innovative Leadership.

    In rating Gov. Yusuf, Performance Index Report of THISNIGERIA newspapers, noted the courage, determination, and commitment of the governor in the service of his people.

    “Not only is he impacting positively in education, agriculture and security, Gov Yusuf in his short stint in office so far continues to show  commendable resilience in the governance of a complex and diverse state like Kano.”

    HE Pastor Eno of Akwa Ibom state is being garlanded for enthroning a culture and conducive atmosphere of peace and tranquillity, which has in turn led to harvest of democracy dividends for the people of the state.

    Through innovative leadership, he has, in the last one year, made bold statements in rural development and health care services and fostered political inclusion in a state hitherto fractured along ethnic and political divides.

    Mr Jim Osayande Obazee, Special Investigator CBN and other government business entities will receive the prize in the Public Service category. 

    Obazee, a patriotic and fearless Nigerian, was saddled with the arduous task of unearthing and cleansing the Augean stable of economic malfeasances in the Central Bank of Nigeria under the embattled former Governor, Godwin Emefiele.

    The trial is still ongoing, but to Obazee and his team’s credit “there has been no story or case of anyone succumbing to inducements to sway them from the path of rectitude unlike probes of similar nature.”

    Comrade Issa Aremu, veteran labour leader and Director-General of Michael Imoudu Institute of Labour Studies, is also a recipient of the Public Service award.

    Aremu has been silently but effectively transforming the labour institute in terms of capacity and relevance to the country’s government-workforce engagement. 

    The policy body has continued to engage different labour sectors to ensure a better understanding between all interest groups.

    Aremu has served variously as vice-president of the NLC; also, in the continental labour organization in executive capacity, among other positions.

    The acting chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Benue State, Hon. Benjamin Omakolo, has rated Gov Hyacinth Alia high in one year, stating he has recorded manifold achievements. 

    Speaking at the Akume Atongo Stadium, Katsina Ala, venue of the start of Alia’s five-day thank-you tour of the Federal Constituencies of Benue State, Omakolo stated the Governor has proven in the last one year to be in league with two legendary former Governors late Chief Aper Aku and Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu in terms of commitment to serving the people and developing the state. 

    Omakolo stated Alia was undertaking the tour to express appreciation for the massive support and overwhelming votes the Benue gave him during the 2023 general elections. 

    He added that the tour was a testament of the Governor’s commitment to connect with the people who entrusted him with their mandate. 

    “Though he should have done this immediately after assuming office, the magnitude of challenges he inherited compelled him to prioritize addressing crucial issues to rescue the state from social, economic and structural decay,” Omakolo stated. 

    He further noted that the tour offers Alia the opportunity to render an account of his stewardship of the state in his first year at the helm of affairs and engage with stakeholders at the grassroots. 

    He said in the course of the tour, the Governor will listen to the concerns of the people, as well as receive their advice and use the feedback to enhance his administration’s service delivery. 

    Highlighting a few of Alia’s achievements in his first year in office, Omakolo mentioned the prompt payment of salaries to civil servants as well as the clearing of the backlog of retirees’ pensions and gratuities.

    He also mentioned the launch of the Benue State Agricultural Revolution (BSAR), to boost farming and food security in the state as well as the establishment of the Benue State Development Fund (BSDF) to support small businesses and entrepreneurs. 

    “He is a leader with plenteous empathy, one who feels the pulse of the ordinary people and is committed to addressing their plights. Governor Alia has a clear vision for Benue State’s development and is working tirelessly to achieve it. Nobody can fault his integrity. He is a man of his word, transparent and accountable in his actions and decisions,” Omakolo stated. 

    He appealed to Benue people to support Alia in his bid to take the state to another level. 

    Omakolo stated that contrary to what some of his detractors claim, Alia runs an inclusive administration. 

    He added that the Governor believes in carrying everyone along regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity or religion.

    The people of Owukpa District in Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State have put an end to the lingering disputes which have crippled the growth and development of the community for several years.

    The resolutions reached at the meeting held at Ai Odu Primary School on Saturday, 15th June 2024, threw the people into jubilation as they hugged themselves, dinned together and prayed for sustained love, peace and unity among the people of Owukpa.

    The peace meeting was conveyed by Chief Ewaoche Obe-led 3-man committee. Obe is a professional mediator and crisis resolution expert after wider consultations with Idoma traditional authorities and Owukpa stakeholders.

    The community was thrown into crises over Owukpa District Head vacant position. Unfortunately, the position which has resulted in multiple court cases amongst lineages and individuals is no longer recognized across Idoma land by the government of Benue State as enshrined in the State Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs law.

    The development informed the new resolutions to, henceforth, align the governance of the community with the recognized Ward system which is a creation of Benue State government.

    In a communique jointly signed by Chief Ewaoche Obe, Barr Enenche Ekoja and Hon Abakpa David Otobo at the end of the peace meeting in Owukpa on Saturday, the people of Owukpa resolved: ” After reviewing the positions of the parties in dispute, proposals/recommendations and consultations from other stakeholders and traditional rulers and institutions in Idoma land, with relevant laws by the State government, it was discovered that the fight is baseless as the position of district head (Och’Owukpa) is no longer recognized by Benue State chieftaincy law. Rather, what is recognized now is Ward Head system. This is why Owukpa today is grouped into four (4) wards – two wards in Itabono (Itabono Ward l and ll) and two wards in Ehaje (Ehaje ward l and ll) and each is headed by a Ward Head. Obviously, therefore, the fight is overtaken by the law. However, as a heritage and pride, Owukpa may keep the position alive to be serviced by the community.

    “Every Ward (Itabono Ward l and ll and Ehaje Ward l and ll) should, henceforth, be responsible for itself without interference from any other Ward. B) Each should present its zoning/rotational system within itself according to clans/lineages within three weeks and to be shared to all Owukpa worldwide for implementation in all Owukpa meetings. C) Any person(s) or group(s) that is not from a particular Ward but found interfering in the affairs of another Ward shall be sanctioned by the Owukpa Traditional Area Council. D) Owukpa Traditional Area Council is given full authority to govern the community in accordance with the lay down leadership structure.  E) In dispute resolution, it should strictly begin with Ona’gene to Clan Head to Ward Head to Och’Owukpa (Onomo) level where it couldn’t be resolved at the Ward Head level.

    ” No Owukpa son/daughter or group should take the other to court until after the dispute resolution channels as in E above is exhausted. B) Any Chief found compromised will be reported to the appropriate authority for disciplinary action.

    ” Every Ward Head and its stakeholders should constitute a 5-man committee to oversee the development of the Ward. B) Five selected persons/delegates from each family/clan/lineage as the case may be in each Ward and to be headed by a national chairman should form a leadership to oversee the Owukpa Community development and progress. C) A and B above shall all be tenured accordingly.

    “The submission/presentation of the position of one of the parties in court on the Onomo shall be forwarded to the other party to peruse and present theirs to the committee set up to look at it with the lawyers of both parties in order to do proper justice to the cases in court to come out with the best way forward. B) However, since the recommendation that the Ochidu clan that has never produced Onomo in Owukpa was not challenged by any of the group or party, the clan should be allowed to produce the next ceremonial Onomo for the interest of peace and justice.

    “All Wards should present their rotational arrangements and occupants of the Ward. B) All rotations according to families/clans/lineages should follow acceptable rotational system without fear or favour.

    “Every Ward shall make contributions for security, development programmes and youths empowerment in the Ward and Owukpa as a whole.”

    In a short interview after observing the Eid prayers, the Governor said: “Yesterday, the Amirul Hajj for Kwara, Senator Ibrahim Yahaya Oloriegbe, reached out to me from the Holy land and asked for my prayer points. I said my prayer for Nigeria is unity, peace, and progress. 

    “Today, my message is same: unity, peace, and progress. For those of us who have seen today, we say AlhamduliLlaah. For those who have departed, we say may Allaah grant them Al-jannah Firdaus.”

    The Governor arrived the Ilorin Eid praying ground with brother the Mutawali of Ilorin Dr. Alimi AbdulRazaq, closely followed by Senator Saliu Mustapha (Kwara Central); House of Representatives members Ahmad Yinka Aluko and Mukhtar Tolani Shagaya; House Leader Oba Magaji; House of Assembly members; Chief of Staff Prince Abdulkadir Mahe; and many other cabinet members. 

    The prayer got underway around 10:30 a.m. after the Emir of Ilorin Dr. Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari entered the praying ground alongside the Chief Imam of Ilorin Sheikh Mohammad Bashir Soliu.

    In what underlined the peaceful atmosphere that the state enjoys under the Governor, the Eid prayer was attended by a rainbow of senior citizens, statesmen,  and title holders from across the Emirate.

    The Emir prayed for continuous peace and prosperity for the state and Nigeria, urging unity among sons and daughters of the Emirate.

    Dasuki launches N100m palliative programme in Kebbe/Tambuwal fed constituency

    The lawmaker representing Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency of Sokoto State, Hon Abdussamad Dasuki, has launched a palliative programme of N100 million comprising cash, education grants and foodstuff for people across the 21 wards in his constituency.

    At the launch of the palliative programme on Thursday in Dogondaji, ahead of the Sallah festival, his constituents also endorsed the call to return Nigeria to the parliamentary system.

    Former Nigeria’s Ambassador to Iran and Leader of Kebbe/Tambuwal Stakeholders Committee, Amb. Abubakar Cika, raised a motion in support of the legislative activities of Dasuki, including the clamour for a return to the parliamentary system. The motion was endorsed by the constituents.

    Applauding the endorsement, Ambassador Cika said: “Only a change of governance system will alleviate the suffering of the masses.”

    Dasuki is the spokesman of the group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives that sponsored bills to alter the 1999 constitution to transition Nigeria from the presidential system to parliamentary System of government.

    They hinged their call on the excessive cost of running the presidential system and the need to have a more accountable, responsive and responsible government.

    Kebbe/Tambuwal constituents also expressed satisfaction with Dasuki’s performance so far, especially with regard to bills and motions targeted at tackling insecurity and the various financial support programmes for members of the constituency.

    In the area of education, for example, Dasuki purchased 450 UTME forms for qualified students across Kebbe and Tambuwal local governments; organized and sponsored UTME tutorials and orientation programmes through his Legislative Assistant on Students; and paid Confirmation of Acceptance fees of N15,000 for each of the 150 newly admitted students of Shehu Shagari University of Education.

    Dasuki said he would continue to prioritise the security and welfare of the people of Kebbe/Tambuwal Federal Constituency in his second year in National Assembly.

    He said he would pay attention to youth, women and skill acquisition programmes, disclosing that preparations had gone far to give more financial grants to youth and women in the constituency.

    Others at the launch were party chairmen, elders, youth leaders, women leaders, market men and women and various groups from Kebbe and Tambuwal local governments.
