RE-ELECTED Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu on Sunday put the people at the centre of his victory in Saturday’s election.

He described the election as a statement of the people’s assessment of his performance in the last three and a half years.

The governor promised to rededicate himself to the challenges facing the state, saying the people have no reason to be poor.

Residents of his home town, Owo, trooped to his residence with drums and bands to celebrate the victory.

The governor and the Deputy Governor-elect Lucky Aiyedatiwa rode in an open vehicle through the streets of the town to the admiration of people, old and young, who trooped out in celebration.

Speaking at his residence, after his victory was confirmed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate said of his victory: “It is unequivocal, direct, inspiring and soul lifting. It is awesome. It is a reward for hard work, dedication, focus, honesty and patriotism. It is also a challenge to us for rededication to service in the interest of our people. On this, we shall not relent.

“We set out on the first leg of this political adventure with the determination to make the whole State our constituency. We have not relented on our mission to bridge the huge infrastructural deficit inherited on assumption of office.

“We hold the axiom as evident that the welfare of the people should be the only justification for the existence of government. We have allowed this admonition to be the guiding principle of governance. We are elated to receive a scorecard through this state-wide plebiscite.

“The resounding victory of our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), throws an open challenge to all stakeholders not to choose the path of complacency. We have noted the few dissenting voices of protest in this referendum. We heard them loud and clear. We intend to address genuine grievances. We shall continue to focus on the development of our God-given space, the Sunshine State.

“This Administration will not be distracted in the discharge of our sacred mandate. The people will continue to be at the centre of all decisions. We will proceed with our administrative style which promotes transparency and accountability. We are determined to set our State, progressively, on the path of real development. Self-reliance is attainable.

“Our State has no business with poverty. Sincere, purposeful and focused leadership should have little difficulty in harnessing the vast resources, both human and natural. We will put in everything to justify the trust reposed in us.”

Akeredolu congratulated his main rival, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Eyitayo Jegede for participating in the election adding that his patriotism was not in doubt.

He described Jegede’s love for the people as unassailable.

He commended INEC for conducting a free, fair and credible election.

Members of the APC National Campaign Council led by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu were at Akeredolu’s residence when the results were announced and Akeredolu declared winner.

Others present were Senator Ibikunle Amosun, Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola and Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, among others.

Akeredolu responded to his declaration as winner with a Christian thanksgiving song before making his speech.

Sanwo-Olu described Akeredolu as a ‘talk-and-do’ governor. He said the victory had given him the opportunity to continue the good work he is doing in the state. He pointed out that the victory belongs to the people of Ondo State. “Thank you, Ondo people,” he said.

Governor Bello said Akeredolu’s victory is a confirmation that the APC is together and will continue to be together. He said: “This simply proved that APC is strong and united.

Thank God for this. Let all youths and other Nigerians continue to support President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Akeredolu and the APC.”

Governor Oyetola thanked all the governors for staying united in supporting Akeredolu. He recalled that Sanwo-Olu relocated to Ondo for one week to demonstrate his commitment.

He said: “This has further shown that APC remains very strong, and in charge. With unity of purpose, we will take APC to greater heights. The Edo State experience will never repeat itself in any APC state.”

Governor Fayemi, Kebbi State Governor Atiku Bagudu and Jigawa State Governor Badaru, also visited Akeredolu.

The people of Akure, the state capital, where the PDP candidate hails from, showed disappointment with the result. Before the result was officially declared by INEC, all was quiet in the capital yesterday.

Indigenes tried to come to terms with the impending defeat of their son. At Jegede’s family house at Cathedral area of the city, where people had jubilated following his good showing at his polling unit on Saturday, an ominious silence hung in the air.

Some politically conscious residents gathered at newsstands to discuss why Jegede lost. They blamed themselves for carrying Jegede as the symbol of Akure agenda, stressing that the inability to make people from other zones buy into their agenda accounted for his electoral defeat. One of the discussants, who identified himself as a core APC member, described Jegede as an Akure candidate and Akeredolu as an Ondo State candidate, judging by the way Jegede’s popularity was unable to spread across the other zones.

    HOW HE WON

AKEREDOLU won with 292,830 votes to defeat Jegede, who secured 195,791 votes. Deputy Governor Agboola Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP) got 69,127 votes.

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Returning Officer Prof. Abel Olayinka, the vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan, declared Akeredolu winner for securing the highest number of votes and scoring 25 per cent in all 18 Local Government Councils.

“Oluwarotimi Akeredolu secured the highest number of votes among the 17 contestants. He was expected to score 25 per cent of votes in 12 LGA’s, but he scored 25 per cent in all 18 LGA’s in the state.

“Moreover the margin of lead, that is the difference between his votes and the candidate who came second, is higher than the number of cancelled votes.

“So, consequently, having satisfied the requirements of the law, I hereby declare Oluwarotimi Akeredolu as the winner, and is hereby returned elected,” he said.

Akeredolu’s margin of victory above his main opponent is 97,039 votes.

Akeredolu won in 15 of the 18 local government councils while Jegede won the remaining three. Ajayi did not win in any including his home Ese-Odo local government where he won in only his ward of the 10 wards that make up the local government.

The governor won all the local governments in the North and South senatorial districts losing only in Akure South, Akure North and Ifedore local government areas which are in the Central Senatorial zone. The PDP candidate hails from Akure.

The collation of results at INEC office in Akure commenced around 12am on Sunday and concluded at about 3:05pm.

The police’ air lifted results and officials from Ilaje and Ese Odo, the two riverine local government area where collation dragged till about 11am yesterday.

There were 595,213 accredited voters and 591,193 total votes cast. 18,448 votes were rejected.

Most of the cancelled votes were as a result of over voting, while a few others were because of none usage of Smart Card Readers, violence and ballot box snatching.

At Ifedore, APC scored 9,350, PDP 11, 852 and ZLP: 1,863. APC had 13,278 voted at Ile-Oluji/Oke-Igbo, while the PDP and ZLP scored 9,231 and 1,971 respectively. The deployment of cutting-edge technology and adequate logistics were the game changers for the police.

For instance, the police Information and Communication Technology (ICT) department provided technical assistance by deploying equipment that could survey and gather audio-visual evidence of most of the polling units from a centralised location.

The gadgets also enabled security to cross-check on the spot, some of the alerts received from the public to know if they were real or false alarms. The police rose up to the occasion to forestall possible ambush of electoral officers returning from remote and riverine councils by air lifting them after the collation.

Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) in charge of ICT, Celestine Okoye, said security was adequate and provided needed supports to prevent criminals from undermining the process.

“We came prepared for this election like we did in Edo. We did not allow those who want to undermine the process the opportunity. Like people said, there was an improvement compared to that of Edo.

“Yes, we saw many false news out there including of things that never happened in Ondo State. Nigerians need to stop spreading fake news.

“The way forward is more improvements. I believe Anambra which is the next election will be better than Ondo. The Police today is technology-driven and we will keep improving on that.

“We arrested suspects and they will be charged to court. We are doing our best and we want Nigerians to enjoy this. The Nigeria Police is improving and will keep doing so.”

  • Winners and losers in Ondo governorship tussle

Winners and losers in Ondo governorship tussle

THE Ondo State governorship election has been won and lost. Deputy Editor EMMANUEL OLADESU writes on dramatic personage who played critical roles in the events that culminated in the exercise

    WINNERS:

     Akeredolu:

Governor Rotimi Akeredolu is not a typical politician. He is absolutely predictable. He does not fight silently. He likes calling a spade a spade. He is rigid. A technocrat, he is not used to wheeling and dealings that characterise politics.

But, he is focused. He also means well for his state. Despite his limitations, he has presided over a prudent administration. He has many achievements to his credit. Attention was not on these feats, but on his weaknesses as a politician, thereby fuelling the insinuations that he has not performed.

During the campaigns, however, he tendered his stewardship; his infrastructure battles, the conducive environment he provides for investment to thrive and his giant stride in security, which led to the setting up of Amotekun.

Ahead of the poll, he reaped the gains of reconciliation that had eluded the crisis-ridden APC chapter. He is also popular at home, making the 35, 000 votes he garnered at Owo, his hometown, to neutralise the threat posed by Akure’s 47,000 votes because he also got 17,000 votes from the state capital, compared to the 5,000 votes Jegede got from Owo.

Akeredolu became lean in the course of the campaigns. He left nothing to chance. The governor never slept on guard.

    Ayedatiwa:

Four years ago, Lucky Ayedatiwa’s senatorial ambition hit the rock. The attention of the people of the South has shifted from Ajayi to the incoming number two indigene, who is expected to be totally loyal to his boss. His choice by Akeredolu was strategic. Not only is he perceived to be loyal, he cannot also be dismissed with a wave of the hand in the politics of the South, where, more than before, he will start playing more leadership roles after his inauguration.

    Electorate:

The people of Ondo State voted wisely for continuity. They shunned thuggery and violence. Ballot snatching was absent. They also turned out to exercise their franchise.  The greatest tribute Akeredolu can pay to them is to sustain the working pact and partnership by giving them a new lease of life through the provision of more dividends of democracy.

    Buhari:

Unlike one of his predecessors who perceived election as a war; a do-or-die affair; President Muhammadu Buhari has set a standard of electoral sanity by mobilising citizens, through personal example, to defend the sanctity of the ballot box.

The President has always admonished stakeholders to play by the rules. Although he is the leader of the ruling party, he has never oppressed the opposition, but encourages them to participate creatively in governance by offering constructive criticisms.

His position on free and fair election is a worthy contribution to the consolidation of democracy in Nigeria.

    Tinubu:

The strategy of the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, worked in Ondo. Miffed by the protracted crisis that hit the chapter in Ondo, he rose to the occasion. The former Lagos governor canvassed the options of party unity, oneness, cohesion and peace, urging governorship aspirants to elevate collective interest over personal agenda.

He also brokered peace between the governor and aggrieved chieftains who belonged to the Unity Forum, advising them to sheathe their swords. A united APC in Ondo became a formidable platform that withstood the opposition’s arrows, threats and onslaught.

Tinubu rallied party chieftains to see the bigger picture. As peace returned to the fold, there was team work and a greater determination to collectively survive. The result was victory on poll day.

    INEC:

The umpire lived up to expectation. Electoral officers reported for duties promptly. Card readers never malfunctioned. Polling officers maintained neutrality in accordance with ethical practice. The exercise was transparent, making the electoral agency to build on its recent achievement in Edo State, where the governorship election was also free and fair.

    APC:

The ruling party learnt useful lessons from Edo where they got their hands burnt. Governors and party leaders closed ranks and worked for the success of the standard-bearer.

At the state level, prominent chieftains put past acrimony behind them. Chief Olusola Oke, Amb. Sola Iji, Dr. Segun Abraham, Senator Ajayi Borrofice, Isaacs Kekemeke, Pa Ali Olanusi and Ife Oyedele buried their differences with the governor. They made great sacrifices for the platform.

Other chieftains-party chairman Ade Adetimehin, Finance Commissioner Wale Akinterinwa, Information Commissioner Donald Ojogo, House of Assembly Speaker Oleyelogun, Publicity Secretary Alex Kalejaye and others held the fort in their various units and local governments.

More importantly, the governors of APC rallied round their own. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, chairman of the Campaign Council, Osun State Governor Gboyega Oyetola, Chairman of Contact and Mobilisation Committee, Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and Yahaya Bello of Kogi State relocated to Ondo State to mobilise indigenes of their states for the APC candidate.

Oyetola was on campaign tour of the state four times, canvassing continuity. Sanwo-Olu held consultations with traditional leaders and community leaders in the heart of Ikaleland, admonishing them to permit the continuity of the progressive beat in the state.

The perception of solidarity and support became the tonic for the state and local chapters to re-dedicate themselves to the actualisation of the second term.

    LOSERS:

    Ajayi:

The greatest loser is Agboola Ajayi, estranged deputy governor, who fell out with his boss, Governor Akeredolu (SAN). A maverick, Ajayi, a likeable personality and an experienced actor, is a man in a hurry.

To observers, his inordinate ambition to displace his boss drew huge wool across his eyes. If he had exercised patience, may be, he would be the candidate to beat in 2024 since the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is disposed to power shift to the South Senatorial District, his birthplace.

Once Akeredolu got wind of his plot, he started perceiving him as a disloyal deputy. To him, the wild goose chase amounted to political pollution. The chord was severed.

Ajayi started running helter-skelter, living to expectation as a serial defector. He left APC for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) where he lost the ticket to a more formidable aspirant, Ejitayo Jegede. After 40 days in the PDP, he defected to the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP). Funding for the party was difficult. At the weekend poll, he finally lost his deposit. He was humbled by the electorate.

What future for the embattled politician? His position as deputy governor is shaking. The House of Assembly may see the victory of the governor as an impetus to revisit the impeachment plot. Even, if that option is not explored, his career as number two indigene of Ondo State is full of tension.

Will Ajayi retrace his steps to PDP or APC? Will he remain in ZLP?

    Jegede:

Jegede is a successful lawyer. He is a decent citizen. But, he has always got his calculations wrong. His projections are often faulty. Political fortune has not smiled on him. But, his supporters are full of hope for a brighter future.

In 2016, some forces aborted his ambition. The coast was only clear two days to the election. Undeterred by the setback, he returned to the drawing board. Curiously, his think-tank could not discover the fact that the power equation in Ondo State did not favour him.

A moralist, Jegede’s mood never accommodated an alliance, thereby failing to realise that in politics, there are no permanent friends or foes; what matters is permanent interest. Also, his Akure Agenda seemed to have alienated other zones. It rekindled, for example, the age-long land dispute between Akure, his hometown and Idanre.

Twice, the former Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice has passed through a baptism of fire. Indeed, he is learning the ropes. No doubt, he is a good material. He should be courageous not to quit. Jegede should learn from past and present mistakes as he forges ahead into future with optimism.

    PDP:

The PDP was energised by its successful outing in Edo State, hoping to enlarge its coast in the Southwest. But, the terrain is different.

What was paramount to the party after the Edo poll was to capture Ondo and gather a momentum for 2023. But, Ondo was not ready to return to the past.

PDP’s preparations for the poll could not have paved the way for victory. The campaigns wobbled and the campaigners were in disarray. The result was that PDP could not win another state in the Southwest, reinforcing the position of Seyi Makinde of Oyo State as the lone governor in the region.

For another four years, Ondo PDP will be left in the cold. But, the chapter should not be downcast. It should brace up for the role of opposition in democracy.

    Mimiko:

Olusegun Mimiko, former commissioner, secretary to government, minister and governor of Ondo State is the national leader of ZLP.

In 2016, his succession project crumbled as Jegede, his anointed candidate, lost to  Akeredolu.

Later, he pulled out of PDP, which he joined after bidding farewell to the Labour Party (LP), his next point of call after defecting from the Alliance for Democracy (AD).

But, why did the Ondo-born politician, despite his experience and long stay in politics, fail to install his emergency godson, Ajayi, as governor?

Is the big elephant now tired? Why can’t the lion roar again? Is the former governor now being deserted? There is a speculation that Mimiko has senatorial ambition. Can he still realise it on the platform of the ZLP?

    Secondus:

The PDP national chairman also ate the humble pie. He was checkmated by the superior argument that Southwest is not assailed by collective amnesia. His dream of using a PDP victory in Ondo as an achievement under his leadership never came into reality. Although he threatened fire and brimstone, instead of putting his house in order, PDP failed the popularity test in the state.

    Makinde:

Makinde is the undisputed arrowhead of the PDP in the Southwest. He is a big loser because he failed to add Ondo State to Oyo State as a PDP state in the Southwest.

THERE was jubilation on Sunday as Ondo State Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu was declared the winner of Saturday’s governorship election. His fellow All Progressives Congress (APC) governors and their party could not hide their joy.

The APC said the victory represented a defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP’s) ‘stomach infrastructure’.

The party lambasted the PDP for insinuating that Ondo State electorates voted for the highest bidder. Governorship candidate of the PDP Eyitayo Jegede called on his supporters to exercise patient.

Jegede, who spoke through the spokesman of his campaign organisation, thanked the people of Ondo State who voted according to their conscience.

“We thanks to the loyal members of PDP at local, state and national levels who took ownership of this project and executed it. This is God’s project and since it remains so, ‘we wait, Eyi ni ise Oluwa.’”

APC Acting National Secretary and Secretary, National Campaign Council for the Ondo election, Mustapha Saliu, who spoke with reporters in Akure, said voters trooped out to vote willingly.

The National Campaign Council said Akeredolu’s victory was a vindication of APC’s ideology-preference for physical infrastructure.

This was contained in a congratulatory message to Akeredolu signed by a member of the Council and the Director-General of Voice of Nigeria (VON), Mr Osita Okechukwu in Abuja on Sunday.

    The statement reads:

“On behalf of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Campaign Council led by the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Babajide Sanwolu, congratulates His Excellency Rotimi Akeredolu for his victory in the Saturday 10th, October 2020 Ondo State gubernatorial election.

“For us in the APC his victory and that of His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki, both products of APC in the last four years have in no small measure defined our ideology-preference of devoting much more resources to physical infrastructural development to Stomach Infrastructure as per PDP.”

    Governors, others congratulate Akeredolu

Ekiti State Governor Dr Kayode Fayemi has attributed the victory of the APC in the Ondo State governorship election to the exhibition of the sincerity of purpose and togetherness by party leaders.

Fayemi, who congratulated Akeredolu on his re-election, said elections are almost always winnable when there are proper coordination and unity among the rank and files in the party.

The governor, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Yinka Oyebode, lauded the leaders of the party in Ondo State for closing ranks ahead of the election and working in unison to achieve victory for the party.

“It is a wake-up call that with a laser beam focus, proper planning, unity and sincerity of purpose, elections are almost always winnable. It is hoped that the various bye-elections coming up at the end of the month will benefit from this renewed vigour and focus in our party”.

He said Akeredolu’s electoral victory was an attestation to the fact that the electorate would always reward a performing leader and administration with their votes.

He commended the people of Ondo for their peaceful conduct at the poll, a situation which he said greatly reduced the pre-election tension in the state in addition to crippling the antics of purveyors of violence.

“It is a new day in Ondo State. Congratulations to my brother Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN) and a bigger congratulation to the APC members in the state. The biggest applause, however, goes to the good people of Ondo State for ensuring the election was held in an atmosphere devoid of rancour, violence and blood-letting as many had predicted.

“It is heart-warming to see the electorate reward Governor Akeredolu’s good performance in terms of industrialisation and infrastructure development of the state among others with electoral victory.

“To whom much is given, much should be expected. I have no doubt that the good people of Ondo State would witness a greater level of socio-economic, industrial and infrastructure development in Governor Akeredolu’s second term,” he added.

His Osun State counterpart, Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, described the victory of Akeredolu as “sweet and well deserved”.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr Ismail Omipidan, read: “Akeredolu’s victory is well-deserved and a true reflection of the wishes and aspirations of the good people of Ondo.

“The sterling performance and achievements of Governor Akeredolu in his first term also informed the decision of Ondo electorate to re-elect him for another term, and expressed confidence that the Governor will continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.

“I heartily congratulate His Excellency, Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, on his well-deserved re-election as Governor of Ondo State. I also congratulate Mr. President, the National Caretaker Committee, and other leaders of our great party including Baba Bisi Akande, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, members and supporters of the APC, on this sweet victory at the just- concluded Ondo State governorship election.

“This victory is a true reflection of the wishes and aspirations of the good people of Ondo. It is apparent that Governor Akeredolu’s sterling performance and achievements in his first tenure informed the decision of Ondo people to vote him for another term.

“I’m confident that Governor Akeredolu will continue to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people of Ondo State.”

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq also congratulated his Ondo State counterpart, saying the victory was deserving.

“I congratulate His Excellency the Governor of Ondo State on his victory. It is a deserving reward for his good works. The massive victory is a resounding vote of confidence by the people in his leadership in the past four years. The outcome is, therefore, a victory for the excellent performance of our party under his able leadership in the Sunshine State.

“I also congratulate the leadership and members of our party, the APC, in Ondo and across the country for rallying round the Governor to achieve this convincing victory,” he said in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye.

For Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong, Akeredolu’s re-election was worth celebrating.

Lalong, who is the Deputy Chairman of the APC Ondo Governorship Campaign Council, appreciated the resilience and faith of the people of Ondo State in their governor, and the APC.

He also commended the electorate for comporting themselves decently throughout the process of electioneering.

Minister of State for Niger Delta Affairs Tayo Alasoadura congratulated Akeredolu.

Alasoadura, in a statement by his spokesman, Dayo Joseph in Akure, described the emergence of the APC candidate as “a victory well deserved”.

The minister commended INEC and the security agencies for ensuring that the election was free, fair, credible and peaceful, “in keeping with the avowed commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration to leave a legacy of free and fair elections”.

Alasoadura also applauded the people of the state for turning out en-masse on Saturday, in all the local government areas of the state, to peacefully and freely exercise their democratic rights.

He extolled the “bravery, resilience and sheer doggedness” of APC members in the state.

Senate Chief Whip Orji Kalu has congratulated Akeredolu over his victory in the just concluded governorship election in Ondo State.

Kalu, in a congratulatory message to the re-elected governor, commended the people of Ondo State for their support to the governor and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

While acknowledging the transformation of Ondo State by the Akeredolu led-government, Kalu urged the governor to maintain his all inclusive and participatory approach of governance.

The former governor of Abia called on the candidates of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Chief Eyitayo Jegede and Agboola Ajayi respectively, to work harmoniously with Akeredolu to take Ondo State  to greater heights.

Kalu said that the political class regardless of party affiliation must work together to drive development at the grassroots.

He said that Akeredolu had demonstrated undoubted capacity to lead the people of Ondo State  to the promised land with robust development across the nooks and crannies of the state.

“The outcome of Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State is a testament to the acceptability of the APC across Ondo State.

“The election results have clearly shown that the governor’s accomplishments in his first tenure earned him victory for a second term.

“There is no doubt in the capacity of Akeredolu to continue to steer the affairs of Ondo State.

“Election is not a do-or-die affair and as such, there is no victor, no vanquished.

“The governor must sustain his leadership style anchored on inclusiveness, transparency and accountability.

“All hands must be on deck to make life meaningful for the people,” Kalu said.

Kalu also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the media, security agencies, local and international election observers, civil society organisations and political parties for ensuring a free, fair and credible poll.

He added that Nigeria’s democracy is growing.

The former governor called on political office holders and politicians to demonstrate credible leadership and good governance at all levels for the sake of building a prosperous nation.

     Oshiomhole hails governor

APC immediate past chairman Adams Oshiomhole also congratulated the governor, describing his victory as “fruit of stellar performance”.

“I felicitate with Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu on this well-deserved victory. With this emphatic victory, the good people of Ondo State have surely expressed their appreciation for Akeredolu’s stellar performance in the last four years. Truly, he is tested and trusted.

“This victory also reaffirms the dominance of our great party, APC, in the Southwest.

“I wish Akeredolu’s wisdom and God’s speed as he continues to serve as the people’s governor of Ondo and a bridge-builder,” Oshiomhole said.

    ‘Major parties guilty of vote-buying’

Dr Kayode Ajulo, a constitutional lawyer and former General Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), alleged that all major parties in the just concluded Ondo State governorship election were guilty of vote-buying.

In a statement in Lagos, Ajulo, an indigene of Ondo, who said he monitored the election, alleged that the major political parties were all involved in influencing voters for the election, using money.

Ajulo said that the parties accusing others of vote-buying during the election had no moral rights to do so as they were all guilty of it.

“The reported widespread vote-buying during the election is true but it’s not restricted to one party.

“The case of vote-buying was not only common to the major opposition. The three leading political parties in the election tried in the game of outspending and overreaching one another,” he said.

He further explained that the only difference was the financial strategy, wit and coordination of  the political parties involved to facilitate the act.

No corps member was kidnapped during poll, says NYSC

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) yesterday denied the claim that a corps member was kidnapped in Idanre Local Government Area during Saturday Ondo State governorship poll.

The scheme described the report of kidnap of a corps member as false.

A statement titled ‘No corps member was kidnapped in Ondo’ was made available by the Director, NYSC South West Area Office, Mr Emmanuel Attah, lamented that the fake report caused parents and relatives of serving corps members in Ondo State to be worried and they have been calling officials of the scheme.

His words: “No corps member was kidnapped, before, during and after the Ondo State governorship election.

“All our corps members who were deployed as INEC ad hoc officials for the election have since returned to their respective lodges and abide and they are in good health. That report that a corps member was kidnapped is not true.”

‘Conduct of policemen in Ondo election above average’

The Police Service Commission (PSC) said the conduct of policemen on electoral duties at the Governorship election in Ondo state was above average.

In a statement by the Head, Press and Public Relations, Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission’s team visited 12 local government Areas in the three Senatorial districts of the state, covering 77 polling units.

Ani said the team received a total of 51 telephone calls from its advertised dedicated lines with complaints basically on attempts to induce voters.

“There was a reasonable distribution of Policemen at the various polling units ranging from three to about 12 depending on the size of the Unit.

“The Policemen were complemented in virtually all the polling units by men of the Department of State Security, (DSS,) Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps, (NSDC) Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the joint task force of Mobile Policemen and the Military that manned major highways and junctions in the state.”

    CSOs commend INEC

The Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room (Situation Room) yesterday commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on the conduct of the Ondo Governorship Election.

In a statement signed by Esther Uzoma, Alternate Chair, Situation Room, the group said that INEC improved on the gains of the Edo election with improvements recorded in the compliance with COVID-19 protocols, logistical arrangements and commencement of polls.

Uzoma said that INEC’s processes improved and were mostly hitch-free, adding that this was also evident in the relatively smooth Ward collation process.

She said that the group commended INEC for improving on timely commencement of polls with early srart of polls in most voting locations across the state.

She said that the group also observed that Smart Card Readers were widely used to accredit voters and in several instances of card reader failure, technical support was provided to rectify the situation.

“On the positive side also, the reports indicate professional conduct of security personnel. There were, however, isolated incidents of logistical challenges.

“The menace of vote-buying is still prevalent in the electoral process, with several reports of the trend worsening.

“Although there are concerns over observance of COVID-19 prevention protocols, there was marked improvement from the most recently conducted governorship elections.

“Voter turnout was generally low across the State, which raises questions about decreasing citizens participation in elections in Nigeria, and what needs to be done to address the problem, going forward.’’

Uzoma said that the group believed that the introduction and use of the Z-pad for uploading of collated polling results was a major improvement on the election process, because of the heightened transparency that this had brought to the elections.

She said that upon completion of the voting process, Situation Room observed a 100 per cent  complete upload of results to the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV) in 11 of the 18 LGAs in Ondo State, after about eight hours of close of polls.

She said that although the use of the platform was still relatively new, Situation Room urged INEC to continue to improve on the technology and practice.

“This is in order to assure citizens of the increased transparency in our electoral system and as a tool for overseeing the results collation process.”

Uzoma said that a notable observation by the group was the preference given to persons with disabilities, the elderly, pregnant women and nursing mothers in the voting process.

She said that while acknowledging the laudable efforts of INEC to make special provisions for the peculiarities of PWDs, Situation Room observed that some polling units were inaccessible to this class of voters because of topography and drainage systems.

She said that the group observed that voter turnout was very low compared to the number of registered voters who collected their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).

She said that Situation Room noted, however, that a lot of work needed to be done by INEC, the political parties and civil society organisations to find innovative ways of reducing voter apathy, including civic education, and drive turn out by voters.

She said that reports received by Situation Room showed that vote buying was evident in a number of polling units and largely went unchecked.

“Voters were seen selling their votes for sums ranging from N4,000 and N5,000, to N7,000, depending on the political parties or location.

“The improper positioning of voting cubicles and ballot boxes in some polling units observed, made it easier for party agents to deduce patterns of voting as the secrecy of the ballot was not observed.

“Situation Room calls on INEC, security agents and other stakeholders to seek out more practical ways of enforcing punitive measures against offenders, to serve as a deterrent to political actors and the electorate, moving forward. ‘’

Uzoma said that the election was relatively violence-free, in spite of the political tension.
