NIPR FCT, Drawbridge CM partner on expanding PR consulting landscape

The Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) FCT Chapter is set to partner with Drawbridge CM Limited, a communication management company based in Abuja, to enhance the public relations consulting ecosystem in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and surrounding regions through capacity-building initiatives.

The chairman of the NIPR FCT Chapter, Stanley Ogadigo made this announcement while receiving a delegation from Drawbridge CM in Abuja.

He emphasised that capacity building for members and adding value to society are key priorities for his administration.

He highlighted that the newly established Projects and Partnerships Committee (PPC) is designed to facilitate partnerships that offer mutual benefits.

The collaboration with Drawbridge CM will be the inaugural project undertaken by the PPC.

Prominent members of the FCT chapter in attendance included Mrs. Olubunmi Badejo, NIPR national council member representing the FCT; Dr. Omoniyi Ibietan, Secretary-General of the African Public Relations Association; and Haj. Maryam Sanusi, immediate past chairman of the FCT Chapter and NIPR Council member representing the Federal Government.

Hassan Abdul, Lead Consultant and CEO of Drawbridge CM expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with the NIPR FCT Chapter.

He stated: “As key players in the PR field in Abuja, we value every opportunity to engage with the NIPR and the public relations profession through the chapter. Our visit today underscores our commitment to supporting the chapter’s goals and contributing to its ongoing development and success.”

Abdul further noted the potential of the PR profession to create job opportunities and reduce unemployment by directly employing practitioners and indirectly supporting organizational growth and profitability.

He highlighted the importance of PR in building reputations and fostering positive relationships essential for the success of both public and private sector organizations.

Addressing the limited number of PR consulting firms in the FCT, Abdul pointed out: “We are among a few PR consulting firms in the FCT despite the large pool of registered practitioners in the chapter. Many practitioners operate within the public sector, creating a gap when organizations need external PR consultants. This gap is often filled by firms from outside the FCT, which is less efficient.”

He added: “An Abuja-based firm, with its expertise and local knowledge, would be more cost-effective and efficient in navigating the public sector landscape. We are ready to work with the NIPR FCT chapter to expand the consulting practice ecosystem by building capacity for members at both experienced and entry levels. We are proud to partner with the chapter on any projects that support this goal.”

Ogadigo assured Drawbridge CM of the Chapter’s readiness to collaborate on enhancing the practice of public relations in the FCT and beyond.

The Drawbridge CM delegation included Franklin Ginger-Eke, senior advisor to the firm, and Jessica Ahmodu from the firm’s client service team.

It claimed residents are being targeted by police allegedly acting for the estate developer  Shell East Staff Investment Cooperative Soceity Limited (CoopEast) despite a lawsuit challenging the developer’s plan to build on a designated green area.

The group explained the homeowners bought properties with the understanding the green space would be part of the estate. However, the group alleged the developer wants to sell it for development, breaking the original agreement.

  • Dangiwa breaks jinx, reconstitutes ARCON council as Ajayi re-elected president

Dangiwa breaks jinx, reconstitutes ARCON council as Ajayi re-elected president

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Dangiwa has toed a fresh path by reconstituting the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria (ARCON), charging all architects to bury their differences for the advancement of the profession.

The minister’s decision came almost 30 months after the tenure of the last council had expired.

Though many acknowledged the sterling performance of the last council, led by Arc. Dipo Ajayi, however, several intrigues had hit the body, leading to internal acrimony and sharp differences between ARCON and the Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA) on one hand, and NIA against the Association of Chartered Nigerian Architects (ANCA) on the other hand.

The minister upon his assumption of office had waded into the matter and had met warring factions with a view to bringing a lasting solution.  He had urged them to sheath their swords and allow peace to reign, while he promised to expedite action in reconstituting the council in no distant time.

Charging the new council, Dangiwa, who noted that the Federal Government could not waste further time in bringing the new council to berth, said ARCON was created in1969 as a policy-making organ of government to help in promoting the development and growth of the architectural profession.

“This is because the government recognized the need to regulate and maintain standards in the built environment, which is a major driver of economic growth.

“Since then, it has played a key role in shaping the development of the profession and the quality of architects and architectural output.”

He charged council members to ensure that there was peace in the house of architecture in Nigeria.

“This is very important. Without a peaceful environment, there can never be meaningful progress.

“As a revered profession, we must demonstrate unity. We must demonstrate the ability to organize ourselves.

“We must show that we can lead the industry. This must be evident in the way our organizations conduct themselves.

“I made it clear to all stakeholders and interest groups within the profession that ARCON is the statutory body established to regulate the architectural profession in Nigeria, by virtue of the provision of Section 7 (5c), 9(3), and Section 4 of the Architects Registration Act, 2004.

“This new council must play its part by promoting accountability and transparency through the implementation of initiatives that would enhance good governance in the built environment by building a culture that encourages registered architects to uphold ethical conduct and integrity.

According to him, “This includes working hard to sanitize the profession and bring to an end the incessant incidences of building collapse in the country that have led to the loss of lives and property, thereby bringing shame to the profession.

“This distinction and your nomination come with high responsibility and you must be alive to the expectations of the Architectural profession and the trust bestowed upon you and be ready to contribute meaningfully towards policies that will promote and enshrine standards and quality in the housing sector.”

The minister also threw his weight behind other groups with the architecture family that wished to exist.

“We should incorporate the right to exist and function with the common objective of promoting the profession, in accordance with the provision of Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution as amended (which gives the right to freedom of association), accordingly.

Immediately after the inauguration, members of the council went to vote for its principal officers.

Subsequently, Ajayi was reelected as the President of the Council.

He defeated Arc. Kabiru Ibrahim, who was tipped by the Nigerian Institute of Architects to clinch the coveted seat.

Similarly, Arc. Mohammed Kani emerged as the Vice President, having defeated Arc. Fatai Falola.

While the Registrar of the council remains Arc. Umar Murnai, Arc. Ugwuanyi Odobuma was returned as the Treasurer.

In his acceptance speech, Ajayi urged us all to embrace the spirit of cooperation, unity, and commitment.

“Let us celebrate our diversity and harness our collective strengths to elevate our profession and create a lasting impact.

“Let us work together to build a brighter future for architecture in Nigeria, where creativity thrives, innovation flourishes, and our contributions make a meaningful difference in the lives of our people.

“Together, we will shape the future of our profession and create a legacy that will inspire generations to come.”

  • Harness our assets to revive economy, says NIESV president

Harness our assets to revive economy, says NIESV president

The President of the Nigerian Institution of Estate Surveyors and Valuers (NIESV), Mr. Victor Alonge, has said that Nigeria’s assets, if properly harnessed, have the potentials to boost the nation’s economy.

Alonge made the disclosure on Monday, May 6, in Abuja in commemoration of the 2024 International Valuation Day Celebration with the theme “The Importance of Asset Valuation in Financial Stability.”

Speaking at the briefing, Alonge, noted that the Valuation Day celebration, which started in Nigeria three years ago, was primarily to improve the awareness of the Nigerian public on the importance and the key roles of valuation particularly in the economic activities and the development of the Nigerian state.

According to him, this was in keeping with the global focus of the International Valuation Standards Council (IVSC) in promoting the realization of the International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) principles of clarity, relevance, reliability, and comparability in asset pricing reporting particularly in financial statements.

The newly elected president of NIESV said this year’s theme was carefully selected to help both public and private citizens in to aid in making critical financial decisions.

“The theme was adopted in order to draw attention to the relevance of asset valuation in optimizing the potentials of assets in economic and financial decision-making in all sectors of the economy.”

Reviewing the state of valuation in the country, Alonge, a former vice chairman of the Estate and Valuers Registration Board of Nigeria (ESVARBON), though Nigeria sits on a goldmine, it was however regrettable that much of these values were left unattended to.

“The current state of the Nigeria economy requires that the nation, as well as its various components, looks more closely at the huge benefits of appropriate professional asset valuation to her economic development agenda.

“Asset valuation is no doubt, key to unlocking those potentials and in identifying the inherent resources that are available for the benefit of not just this generation, but also the generations to come in a sustainable manner.

“It is very clear to us as valuers, that the country sits on gold but because it is not polished, it appears to the untrained eyes as dust.

“The theme of the year 2024 celebration was thus chosen to act as a catalyst for improved understanding and awareness of the need for Nigeria to join many other successful jurisdictions in ensuring proper professional valuation of her land and property assets.”

NIESV president added: “Nigeria currently lags in undertaking credible valuation of her national assets. “While the total value of global property assets was reported at $613.30 Trillion, and the global stock market at $109 Trillion as of 2023, Nigeria does not yet know the value of her own real estate assets.

“This no doubt calls for action from the government as knowing the value of our national real estate asset would help in meaningful national planning.

“Asset valuation holds a prime place in the financial stability of the government whether federal, state or local. Corporate organizations, families, and individuals do not need valuation any less to be financially stable.”

With professionals’ involvement in assets valuation, Alonge said, the allocation of resources will increase.

“Decisions about the allocation of resources will therefore improve if we all appreciate the key roles and importance of asset valuation in achieving financial stability and the promotion of investors’ confidence in attracting foreign direct investments into the country.

“We in NIESV therefore, use this opportunity to encourage both public and private entities to embrace market-based asset valuation for the reporting of the value of their assets in financial reports.”
