Ronaldo celebrates World Cup with Bugatti

Cristiano Ronaldo has bought himself a Bugatti Centodieci, which is already the most expensive, wild, powerful, exuberant and exclusive Bugatti of the modern era (except for the La Voiture Noire, which is a one-off).

And although he has not yet shown it publicly on Instagram (let’s face it, the Portuguese star does enjoy showing off his cars), perhaps he is waiting for his return from the World Cup in Qatar with a handful of goals under his arm and a photo of him lifting the World Cup in everyone’s memory to imply that he has earned it.

Cristiano’s new toy has cost him eight million euros without taking into account the taxes he will have been made to pay in his country. A barbarity no doubt, but the figure may be laughable to the player himself if we take into account that he earns more than 40 million a year only thanks to the products he promotes on his Instagram account, where he has 502 million followers.

The Centodieci is a hyper sports car that uses the usual W16 8.0 block of the French brand, which on this occasion has been tuned to provide a power of 1,600 hp, 100 more than in the Chiron. The performance it achieves is that of a true ‘combat fighter’ on the asphalt: 2.4 seconds to go from 0 to 100, 6.1 to do 0 to 200 and 13.1 to reach 300 km/h from standstill.

And if it continues, its momentum could take it up to 380 km/h… electronically limited, because the engine is capable of much more.

And, what is no less relevant for those who have money to burn: in order to preserve its value, only ten of these cars have been built. They do not bear any numbering but the order of manufacture is noted by the chassis number. Can you imagine which unit is Ronaldo’s? Why, the number 7 of course.

Actually the rumour that the Portuguese star might have been interested in the car arose two years ago, but Bugatti neither confirmed nor denied it. Discretion with multi-millionaire potential clients is paramount, and in Ronaldo’s case it is no different.

At MARCA Cars we also heard these rumours, but we did not want to confirm the news until we had a clear proof. And that proof has come with some images shared by Portuguese media outlet Maisfutebol days before the start of the World Cup.

In the photos, the Bugatti Centodieci is seen leaving the Portugal’s national training complex, in the town of Oeiras, on the outskirts of Lisbon. Who else could it be?

In the images, taken in the middle of the night, the white Bugatti (a colour that, perhaps unintentionally, reminds us of Real Madrid) is seen leaving the facilities, apparently accompanied by a Mercedes SUV that follows him a few meters away and in which his bodyguards could be traveling.

It is true that there is no way to confirm that it is Cristiano driving it, but it is also true that Bugatti is very selective when it comes to choosing its customers and that no one from the Portuguese camp would have been approved by Bugatti for this car (remember: there are only ten) except Ronaldo.

In fact, the relationship between the footballer and the French brand goes back a long way, since Cristiano already has a Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse that he acquired in 2016 and a Chiron that he bought a year later, both still as a Madrid player.

Qatar 2022: Rohr disappointed with African teams

    • German tips Saudi Arabia for knockouts

Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr said he is a little disappointed with the performances of African teams  so far at the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

It has not been a good first round of games for African teams starting with African Champions Senegal failing to hold off Holland in their first group game on Monday. Tunisia and Morocco fared better with goalless draws against Denmark and Croatia respectively on Tuesday and Wednesday but yesterday saw Cameroon narrowly lose 1-0 to Switzerland before a brave Ghana fell to a 3-2 defeat to a Cristiano Ronaldo-inspired Portugal.

The German tactician, who spends most of his time in France, added that he hopes France retain the trophy they won in 2018 in Russia and sees Germany improving as the tournament progresses despite Die Mannschaft’s shocking defeat to a plucky Japan on Wednesday.

“I am a little disappointed with the African teams. Senegal played a good match but lost in the end. Tunisia and Morocco both had good draws. Despite not scoring any goals they were very solid.

“We hope that France will be able to defend the trophy. If Mbappe and Giroud are playing very well then France can hope.

“England was also not bad. But let us just wait because we are only in the first round of games. Let us hope for Germany because many teams don’t start very well but get better as the tournament progresses.”

Rohr, who is in Qatar with his family while working with the football academy in Doha, was particularly impressed with Herve Renard’s Saudi Arabia and hoped the Green Falcons would reach the knockout stages of the competition.

“My friend Herve  Renard played a fantastic match with Saudi Arabia (against Argentina). This is the biggest surprise and he has done his job for the moment. They really played very well and it would be wonderful if they qualify.”

    • Portugal edge Ghana 3-2

All five African teams failed to win their first-round matches at the ongoing Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup as the continental flagbearers bar Ghana fired blank against their opponents.

Morocco and Tunisia drew their games, as both Senegal and Cameroon were beaten even as Black Stars of Ghana were also edged 3-2 yesterday by former European champion Portugal.

In fact, African Champions Senegal were the first team to taste defeat in the absence of their talisman Sadio Mane as the West African side were beaten with late two goals by Holland.

But the two North African teams – Tunisia and Morocco put up a decent performance against Denmark and Croatia respectively to settle for a draw in Qatar.

Meanwhile, former African champions Cameroon continued their losing streak at the World Cup after they were beaten 1-0 by Switzerland.

The Indomitable Lions’ last win at the World Cup was in 2002 when they beat Saudi Arabia 1-0 at the Saitama Stadium in Japan. At South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014, Cameroon lost all their six matches as well as their last match at the 2002 edition.

But it was their own that wrecked them yesterday as Yaounde-born Breel Embolo scored the only goal for Switzerland.

Overall, African teams have conceded six goals with Ghana netting two goals in their 3-2 loss to Cristiano Ronaldo-led Portugal.

Four years ago, the quartet of Nigeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, and Senegal crashed out in the group stage, while Teranga Lions were edged out of the round of 16 by Japan on disciplinary records after accumulating more yellow cards than the Blue Samurai.

No African teams have made it to the semi-final at the World Cup, while only Cameroon, Ghana, and Senegal have managed to make it to the quarterfinal stage at the Mundial.

At Italia 90, a Roger Miller-inspired team stunned the world with their display while Senegal at Korea/ Japan 2002 put the continent on the world map with their performance.

Ghana was knocking at the doors of the semifinal before being edged controversially by Uruguay in the quarterfinal at the first FIFA World Cup held in Africa and hosted by South Africa in 2010.

Ronaldo makes history in five-goal thriller against Ghana

Cristiano Ronaldo made World Cup history two days after severing ties with Manchester United as Portugal opened their campaign in Qatar with a 3-2 win over Ghana.

Ronaldo, who is a free agent after his acrimonious Old Trafford break-up, became the first player to score in five World Cup final tournaments when he tucked away Portugal’s first from the penalty spot.

Andre Ayew’s equaliser briefly looked like it would spoil Portugal’s party, but a quick fire double from Joao Felix and substitute Rafael Leao gave them a two-goal advantage.

Osman Bukari halved it with an 89th -minute header but Portugal held on through nine minutes of injury time to seize the initiative in Group H, where Uruguay and South Korea earlier played out a goalless draw.

The erstwhile Manchester United number seven was the first to get the crowd on their feet in the 10th minute, racing onto an Otavio pass after Mohammed Kudus was caught in possession.

However, the ball just ran away from him and goalkeeper Lawrence Ati won a 50-50 foot race to block Ronaldo.

The 2016 European champions were dominating possession and pressing Ghana high up the pitch whenever the ball was lost, but it was a scrappy encounter.

Openings were few and far between, and Atletico Madrid forward Felix summed up the lack of a quality as he leant back and lifted a left-foot shot high over the top in the 28th minute.

Ronaldo had the ball in the net after half an hour but the goal was disallowed for his shove on Ghana defender Alexander Djiku.

Portugal were still on top territorially and as the half came to a close, Otavio was off target with a shot after Joao Cancelo spotted his run from left to right across the box.

Ghana enlivened a slow start to the second period as Kudus broke from deep, got away from Ruben Neves and drilled a low left-foot shot just wide of Diogo Costa’s goal.

Alidu Seidu was given a stern word and a yellow card by American referee Ismail Elfath after he flicked his head towards Felix.

The goal Portugal and Ronaldo craved arrived in the 65th minute, after the referee judged that Ghana’s Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu had tripped the 37-year-old superstar in the box.

Almost every fan in the Portuguese end behind the goal had their smartphones poised as Ronaldo stepped up and made World Cup history, with Ati guessing the right way but not getting close to the ball.

Ghana responded positively though and equalised in the 73rd minute.

Kudus stung Costa’s palms with a thumping left-foot shot and seconds later broke clear on the left side of the area. Danilo Pereira got in a tangle trying to clear his low cross and it fell to Ayew, who swept home from close range.

However, Portugal were gifted the chance to restore their lead when Baba Rahman allowed Bruno Fernandes’ through-ball to reach Felix, who advanced on goal before clipping the ball beyond Ati.

The game appeared to have been put to bed when Fernandes burst forward again from deep, this time picking out substitute Leao to his left who rolled an angled shot home.

Ronaldo raced clear in search of his second and Portugal’s fourth but this time Ati denied him.

Bukari’s header made the final moments more tricky, but Portugal held out despite a late moment of madness from goalkeeper Costa, who almost cost his side dear when he failed to spot Inaki Williams lurking behind him.

Qatar 2022: Richarlison’s brace secures Brazil winning start

World Cup favourites Brazil made a winning start to their bid for glory in Qatar as they eased to a 2-0 win over Serbia.

Looking to end their 20-year drought on the biggest stage, it was far from the convincing opening period from the Selecao, going into the break with it still goalless after a half devoid of many actions.

But having seen Argentina and Germany already slip up, Brazil ensured they were not added to the upset list as Richarlison netted a second-half brace, the second a sensational volley to effectively put the match to bed.

Tite put an attacking team out for his side’s opening Group G clash, Casemiro almost a one-man midfield at times as the five players ahead of him put their focus on getting forward.

Despite the stars on the show, it was a cagey 45 minutes, Serbia’s shape and doggedness more than a match for the quality in yellow. Vinicius Jr had a couple of bright moments out wide on the left, but could not produce the final ball.

The best chance of the first half fell for Raphinha after he combined brilliantly with Lucas Paqueta. That left the Barcelona winger clean through on goal, though the finish that followed was little more than a back-pass to Vanja Milinkovic-Savic.

Brazil should really have taken the lead seconds after the restart, as Serbia were caught playing out from the back, but once again Raphinha could not provide the finish with only the goalkeeper to beat.

The pressure began to increase, as Neymar fired wide from inside the box and Sandro’s effort from distance thumped back off the inside of the post and away to safety.

Serbia could not hold on though, the goal coming just after the hour mark. Vinicius’ low strike was palmed out into the six-yard box, where Richarlison was waiting to turn it into the empty net to continue his strong goal scoring run at the international level.

Qatar 2022: Richarlison hits brace as Brazil beat Serbia 2 – 0

Richarlison lit up the World Cup with a moment of Brazilian magic as the tournament favourites overcame Serbia’s stubborn resistance to open their campaign with an impressive victory.

Brazil had to play a patient game to break down an organised Serbia rearguard but forced the breakthrough after 62 minutes when Tottenham striker Richarlison turned home a close-range finish after Vanja Milinkovic-Savic saved Vinicius Junior’s effort.

Richarlison’s crowning moment came 11 minutes later, at first mis-controlling a pass from Vinicius but readjusting brilliantly to take the aerial route and fire home an acrobatic right-foot finish.

It was no more than Brazil – backed by the massed ranks of their yellow-clad fans – deserved as they dominated throughout, with Alex Sandro and Casemiro hitting the woodwork and Milinkovic-Savic also saving superbly from Fred.

Brazil’s performance made ominous viewing for their rivals, as did the sight of Gabriel Jesus, Antony and Gabriel Martinelli coming off the bench in a powerful show of squad strength, although there was the worrying sight of Neymar going off after taking a knock.

Qatar 2022: Ronaldo scores as Portugal beat Ghana 3-2

Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score at five Fifa World Cups as Portugal began their campaign with a thrilling victory over Ghana.

Ronaldo was playing for the first time since his controversial television interview last week and his subsequent release by Manchester United following the comments.

And the 37-year-old scored the opening goal from the penalty spot, hammering in after being tripped in the box by Ghana’s Southampton defender Mohammed Salisu.

Captain Ronaldo had a couple of chances early on but a low shot was smothered by Lawrence Ati-Zigi and he also headed wide at the far post.

The forward had a goal disallowed for a push on Alexander Djiku while at the other end, Ghana did not have a single shot in the opening period.

The Africans improved in the second period as Mohammed Kudus drilled narrowly wide of the far post and got their reward when Andre Ayew equalised from close range.

But Portugal responded with two goals in two minutes to seal the points – Joao Felix converting a delightfully clipped finish and substitute Rafael Leao coolly stroking in just seconds after coming on.

Osman Bukhari headed in a late consolation for Ghana, but victory means Portugal top Group H after Uruguay and South Korea played out a goalless draw earlier on Thursday.

Qatar 2022: South Korea hold Uruguay to goalless draw

Nothing could separate Uruguay and South Korea in their World Cup opener in Group H despite plenty of attacking quality on show in Qatar.

In front of a vibrant crowd at the Education City Stadium, the South Koreans frustrated Uruguay but did not create many clear-cut opportunities.

Their best fell to Hwang Ui-jo, who fired over the bar in the first half, before Uruguay captain Diego Godin headed a corner against the post.

Hwang stood with his head in hands afterward, while teammates fell to their knees in disbelief, all in front of a group of South Korean fans behind the goal, who were in fine voice throughout.

South Korea had controlled most of the first half but Uruguay began to dominate as the game wore on and they almost won it in the final minute of normal time when Federico Valverde’s long-range effort crashed off the post.

There was one last chance for Tottenham striker Son Heung-min – South Korea’s star man – but he dragged his shot wide, much to the relief of the Uruguayan supporters.

The draw leaves Group H wide open, with many seeing it as a three-way battle for qualification to the knockout stages between Uruguay, South Korea and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal.
