  • Three arraigned over cultism, firearm possession

    Three men, Rotimi Oluwasola, 30; Shittu Babatunde, 25, and Lawal Olatomiwa, 25, have appeared before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court over alleged cultism and possession of firearm.

    The defendants, whose address were unknown, are facing a two-count charge of membership of Alora confraternity( a secret cult) and possession of firearm.

    The Police Prosecutor, Inspector Johnson Okunade, told the Court that the accused committed the offences on November 8 in Ado-Ekiti.

    He said the defendants had confessed that they were members of Alora confraternity.

    Okunade also alleged that Lawal Olatomiwa did become an accessory

    after the fact of felony, when he attempted to cover up Oluwasola, known to have committed the offence of unlawful possession of firearm.

    He said the offences contravened Section 64 and 519 of the Criminal Code, Law of Ekiti State, 2012.

    The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    The defence counsel, Odunayo Okunade, urged the court to grant them bail, with a promise that they would not jump bail.

    Four suspects arrested over Lagos politician ’s murder

    The operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team (IRT) have arrested the suspected killers murder of one Emmanuel Uba aka Onwa, a rising politician and youth leader in Festac area of Lagos State. Uba was gruesomely killed on July 21, 2017 along 7th Avenue Festac.

    A manhunt was launched for his killers following the directives issued by the Acting Commissioner of Police , Edgar Imohinmi.

    The suspects were eventually arrested and a pistol used for the murder recovered. One of the suspects Fatai Onifade alias Apase, 40, a native of Ilaje Ondo State, who confessed to have organised the assassination because Uba had become more popular than him among the political chieftains and youth leaders in the area.

    Another suspects, Abidemi Kolawole alias Baido, 42, also an indigene of Ondo State, confessed to be a friend of the Uba and that his role was to lure the deceased to a meeting at 7th Avenue where the two assassins already waiting on a motorcycle assassinated Uba.

    Also, two other suspects, Mufutai Tokosi alias TK, 31, who hails from Lagos Island and Michael Fashola, an indigene of Ibadan, confessed that they are cultists hired by Onifade to kill Uba.

    The pistol used in assassinating the victim, it was gathered, was recovered from Onifade.

    Unknown gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday invaded the home of a politician, Afolabi Iwalewa, and shot his security guard during the raid.

    The house located at No 15 Surulere Quarters, off Iyin Road was also vandalised during the attack.

    Iwalewa, his wife, Oluwatosin and son, Olasunkanmi were to be away on holiday in France and Portugal.

    It was gathered that the suspected criminals stormed the compound at the wee hour of Wednesday, 22nd November, 2017.

    The security guard was beaten and sustained wounds when he resisted the invaders leaving him in a coma and pool of his blood.

    A source said Iwalewa’s house in Akure was recently attacked fuelling fears that the attack might be politically motivated.

    He said: “Suspected political thugs had penultimate Saturday ransacked Iwalewa’s house at Plot 16, Ogunsakin Street, Akure, where their security dog was killed.

    “It could be a possible assassination attack on the family. We have contacted the family members who said they would take steps but waiting for Iwalewa’s response.”

    When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Alberto Adeyemi, said the case was yet to be reported to his office.

    Ogun customs seize N84m smuggled goods

    The Ogun State Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service has intercepted smuggled goods worth N85 million.

    The contrabands were intercepted within one week during which four operatives of the command were injured and an operational vehicle smashed by the smugglers.

    Speaking during a press briefing at the Idiroko Customs Area Command on Thursday, the Ogun State Controller of Customs, Sani Madugu said the feat was recorded following intelligence and relentless efforst of his men.

    He said that despite the attack on his men, Customs operatives were able to repel the fiendish smugglers.

    The contrabands include seven fairly used cars and one brand new Hilux van, 1,479 bags of foreign rice, two Boxer motorcycles, 78 kegs of vegetable oil and nine other vehicles used by smugglers to convey the rice.

    Madugu noted that about 11,000 bags of rice had been donated by the Ogun Area Customs Command to the Internally Displaced Persons(IDPs) in the northeast.

    He said:” an Anti-smuggling activity in the Ogun Area Customs Command is ongoing. We are succeeding every day. Yestreday, we had a tough one with smugglers in the Idiroko axis but we thank God that we succeeded in evacuating our seizures unhurt.We were able to intercept a brand new Toyota Hilux van. We have a couple of other seizure including five fairly used cars parked in a hidden place. We are following the smugglers by using intelligence and we don’t need to fight with them on the road.

    ‘’We have devised new strategy for fighting smuggling activities and we are getting results. Over 1,400 bags of rice were among the seizures and nine vehicles used to convey the rice. In all, we have a total number of seven fairly used(Tokunbo) vehicles and a brand new white Toyota Hilux van among the contrabands. The goods are worth N84,067,953 and the seizure was recorded within one week.

    ‘’ During the operation, the smugglers threw stones at our men and vehicles. One of the operational pick up vehicles was smashed; they broke its windscreen and doors while four of our operatives were wounded. One of the wounded officers are here while others are responding to treatment in a hospital. Efforts are ongoing to arrest the smugglers and their collaborators ; they will be prosecuted after their arrest.”

    Madugu said his Command cannot be intimidated by smugglers, warning those engage in the illicit to desist from the nefarious business in their own interest.

    Boy, 2, with hole in heart needs N6m for surgery

    Wilfred Ugoh is two years old and currently battles a congenital heart defect commonly called hole in heart.

    His father, Vincent, 35, and mother, Bethel, 30, had spent over N2 million on their son’s treatment all to no avail.

    His father, a foodstuff trader, who hails from Ebonyi State, said he suffered a reversal of business fortune after spending all he had on his son’s ailment.

    Our correspondent learnt that Wilfred’s mother, who graduated from Ebonyi State University, could not participate in the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) as a result of her son’s condition.

    It was gathered that Wilfred was born with the congenital heart problem, but the ailment did not manifest until he was nine months old.

    His father said: ‘’My wife still an undergraduate of Ebonyi State University when she was delivered of the baby (Wilfred) on February 13, 2015. Nine months later, our son started coughing and had high temperature and he was taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Abakaliki, where he was diagnosed with hole in the heart.

    ‘’We continue to manage his health until his condition relapse and he started vomiting while his skin occasionally turned blue. We took him to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and we could not get him a bed space, hence, he was transferred him to Lagos University Teaching Hospital(LUTH), where doctors also diagnosed him with congenital heart defect and that his condition can best be treated in Indian hospitals. The cost of the treatment given to us by Apollo Hospitals in Indian is N6 million ”

    In her words, the distraught mother of the boy, Bethel Ugoh said:” The boy can no longer eat, sit. He is restless and he reluctantly takes corn paste (ogi). We have been taking him to LUTH where a drug called Propanol is administered three times daily. We just returned from LUTH where he was admitted for about 16 days. We are calling on kind hearted Nigerians to help us raise a sum of N6 million to carry out a major surgery on him in Indian.”

    An aluminium technician, Kayode Raphael escaped death by whiskers after he was attacked suspected land grabbers in the Isu area of Imota, Ikorodu, a Lagos suburb.

    The incident happened penultimate Saturday while Raphael and others were trying to install aluminium roof of a building under construction.

    The victim had barely started work at the site when the hoodlums stormed the site and attacked him with hammer and broken bottles.

    Raphael however managed to escape into nearby bush from where he reported the incident to Imota Police Division.

    He said: ‘’ Sometimes in October, I went to a site to install aluminium roof of a building when the same gang of land grabbers stormed the building and demanded a sum of N10,000 as settlement before they could allow us to work. When we gave them N5000, they refused to collect the money and instead wanted to attack us. We contacted Imota Police Division and the matter was settled amicably.

    ‘’On Saturday November 18, 2017, at about 9.30 am, we were about six working on a site when members of the gang came there and smashed a hammer on my face. While I was trying to escape from the scene, one of them pursued me and stabbed me with broken bottles repeatedly on my arms.

    ‘’ I managed to escape into the bush and ran to Imota Police Division to report the incident. I was given police authorization letter to Ikorodu General Hospital for proper treatment. But I could not go to the hospital because I had lost so much blood and my body was weak. This made my friends to take me to a private hospital where I was treated and my wounds stitched.”

    The spokesman of the Lagos State Police Command, Mr Olarinde Famous-Cole could not be reached for comments on his mobile phone, while a text message forwarded to his phone was not returned as of press time.

  • Kwara Police Command parades alleged cultists, kidnappers, armed robbers

    The Kwara Police Command on Friday paraded eight suspects over alleged criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, being a member of secret cult and unlawful possession of firearms.

    The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Lawan Ado, disclosed this while briefing newsmen at the Police Headquarters in Ilorin.

    He listed the accused persons as – Qudus Alaya, Yusuf Olatunji, Salami Adesola, Sunday Oluwatobilola, Ridwan Musa, Sodiq Bakare, Quadri Adele and Johnpaul Nditusi.

    He said that the accused persons were arrested for allegedly killing of Allen Ahmed, Alimi Aliyu, Mumini Omo Alhaja and one Yusuf on Nov. 2 at Oke-Foma area of Ilorin.

    He said that one single barrel locally made gun, one double barrel locally made gun and five live cartridges were recovered from them.

    Ado also said that eight suspects were arrested for kidnapping one Usman Muhammed at Sabo-Osi in Ekiti Division and collected N500, 000 ransom from his family.

    He said that the suspects confessed to the crime.

    Ado said that N361, 150 being part of ransom collected from the victim’s family, two single barrel guns, seven mobile phones and dangerous charms were recovered from them.

    According to him, Jimoh Idowu and Taiye Plumber were arrested for dispossessing one Georgina Okoye of her Honda CRV Jeep with registration number Lagos AAA 362 AG at gun point on Oct. 12 at Asa-Dam Road, Ilorin.

    He said that the vehicle was later recovered at Ajese-Ipo in Irepodun Local Government area.

    The commissioner urged the people to provide information that would help the police to curb criminal activities.

  • Police intercept 1, 427 live ammunition in Benue

    The Police in Benue said they had intercepted 1,427 cartridges of 5.56 mm live ammunition along Makurdi -Lafia road. Police spokesman in the state, ASP Moses Yamu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Friday in Makurdi that the ammunition were concealed in a Volkswagen salon bus with registration number: GBK 226 XA.

    Yamu said the feat was achieved through a security report that some miscreants were planning a robbery attack along Makurdi-Lafia road.

    He said the command, therefore, deployed its operations’ crack team, “Operation Zenda”, led by SP Justin Gberindyer, to abort the planned robbery, while the arms were recovered during a “Stop-And-Search Operation” on the road.

    He said the police were interrogating the five passengers arrested with the arms in the vehicle and that they would soon be charged to court.

    The Police spokesman also confirmed the arrest of one Garba Ibrahim, a herdsman, over the killing of a fisherman man in Logo Government Area.

    Yamu said the police had yet to make any arrest over any infringement of the Anti-Open Grazing Law recently introduced by the State Government.

    “Since the beginning of the implementation of the anti-grazing law in the state, we have yet to make any arrest.

    “So far, we have received a case of culpable homicide where a fisherman was killed and another injured by herdsmen and we promptly intervened and arrested one of the culprits, Garba Ibrahim, who was in possession of a locally made pistol with three live cartridges,” he said.

    Men of the Abia State Police Command have arrested four suspected  kidnappers, who had been terrorizing residents of Aba.

    Sources at Ndiegoro Division revealed that  men of the station acting on a tip- off arrested one Charles Friday, Kenneth Ekpendu, Chidozie Samuel and Munachi Ebere at River Lay-out some distance to the popular Aba abattoir for allegedly kidnapping one Chinedu Nwokorie along Okigwe Road by Akalanna off Faulks Road Aba.

    The syndicate, The Nation learnt, collected a sum of N500, 000 as ransom before releasing their victim to his family.

    The victim’s Lexus car which was said to have been snatched by the same gang was recovered at Omoba in Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of the state.

    In a related development,  a team of policemen on attached to Ndiegoro Police Station while on patrol also recovered a Toyota Lexus 300 Jeep marked KJA 769 DW Lagos State.

    The car was said to have been snatched from its owner identified simply as Francis along Obohia road Aba and was reportedly used in series of robbery operations by identified gunmen.

    A sum of N100,000.00 belonging to the victim, two GSM phones, two live and one shell of AK 47 ammunition were said to have been recovered from the vehicle.

    It was learnt that the gunmen on their way after an operation snatched the car at gunpoint and later abandoned it while being trailed by policemen and other security agencies.

    Police spokesman, Geoffrey Ogbonna confirmed the arrest of the suspects adding that efforst were on to unmask the gunmen who abandoned the Lexus SUV at Obohia axis of the commercial city.

  • Court orders remand of 2 in prison over alleged N1.1m fraud

    An Ile-Ife Magistrates’ Court on Friday ordered the remand of two accused persons, Jelili Oladejo, 30, and Oladejo Saheed, 55, in prison custody over alleged N1.1 million fraud.

    Oladejo and Saheed  of no fixed residential address are standing trial on a three-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and false pretence, to which they pleaded “not guilty”.
