A 43-year-old man Okafor Secopter has told police that he ventured into smuggling of marijuana (Indian hemp) in Lagos, because he could not do armed robbery.

Police sources said the suspect was arrested by the Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) while on routine patrol at Isheri Berger area of Lagos, on August 28, 2017.

It was learnt that Okafor was intercepted with a Ghana-must-go bag at Isheri Berger area which contained Indian hemp weighing over 20 kilogramme.

The suspect allegedly confessed to the ownership of the hard drug.

Confessing, Okafor said:  “I am a smuggler. I was into smuggling business. I used to smuggle marijuana because I cannot do armed robbery job. Smuggling is the only business I know how to do well.

The country is too tough and rough. I cannot kill my fellow human beings to get money. Leave matter for Mathias. I cannot do armed robbery and I cannot do kidnapping. I do not have the mind to do obtaining by false pretense aka 419 or big fraud. I cannot operate dangerous gun.

I am hustling to get what I and my family will eat. It is not a crime. I have to take care of my family.

“I was buying and selling foreign rice before the government banned foreign rice importation. As if that was not enough, the bags of rice in my shop were seized and for me to survive I started smuggling marijuana. I used to buy it from Benin, Edo State. It was when I was carrying the bag of Indian hemp to Lagos that police on patrol saw me at Isheri Berger area and stopped me. When they opened the bag to know what I was carrying they saw marijuana and they said I was under arrest. It is not my fault. The country is tough.

Killing of PDP chieftain sparks protest in Delta community

    •We’ve arrested three suspects -Police

Protest rocked Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State last Friday, following the killing of a chieftain of the People’s Democratic Party, Mr Felix Okugbeni, by unidentified gunmen.

Until his death, Okugbeni was the chairman of the party in Ward 4, Ughwagba community in Okpe Local Government Area.

It was learnt that Okugbeni was shot dead on his way home shortly after he and other party chieftains held a meeting with a politician in the state.

Sources said that the politician was riding in his tricycle (keke Marwa) with a lady, identified as Gloria, when the gunmen shot him.

It was gathered that the tricycle was riddled with bullets while the lady also suffered gunshot wounds and she is now receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

“The ward chairman was shot severally in the abdomen and chest by the gunmen until they were sure that he was dead before they fled the scene. The lady riding with him was also shot, but she did not die and is now being treated in a private hospital in an unknown location,” an impeccable source told our reporter.

The incident, The Nation learnt ignited protests  in the community, which according to sources, is battling with a lingering leadership tussle in a local youth association.

Several houses were razed by a mob as residents fled the community for fear of being attacked or killed.

Another source said:’’ Okugbeni, after the visit of the politician, left the community on his tricycle and it was on his return home to his house in company of a lady that he was shot by suspected gunmen on his arrival, while the lady sustained bullet wounds.

“What l cannot confirm now is whether the attack was as a result of the visit of the politician or because of the lingering youth leadership tussle that has been on over time, but it coincided with the visit of the politician to the ward; that is why it has left tongues wagging on possible political undertone.

“There has been issue of youth leadership tussle in Ughwagba community, where some highly placed persons were trying to impose someone suspected to be a cultist on the community. The move was opposed by the deceased, who insisted that Ughwagba is a peaceful community and they cannot allow a cultist to take the leadership of the youth  but whether that was what led to this killing is what I cannot say.

“We also believe that there are some highly placed persons in the community that we feel might be behind the incident and we are calling on the police to do a thorough investigation, so that the culprits and those still on the run are brought to book.

“What sparked the destruction and burning of houses by angry mobs was when the rumour filtered into town that the ward chairman had been killed, and probably the community youths suspected some persons who may have committed the crime.”

It was however gathered that the Orerokpe Police Division arrested some suspects in connection with the incident.

Police sources said the suspects were later transferred to the State’s Police Command headquarters, Asaba while manhunt has been launched for other suspects on the run.

Meanwhile, members of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, led by Chief Dick Gberevbie and Mr. Adolor Gberevbie, have paid a condolence visit to the bereaved family of the slain politician.

Confirming the incident, the spokesman of Delta State Police Command, Andrew Aniamaka, said some suspects have been arrested, adding that the case is being investigated by the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Asaba.

  • Community insists on pre-paid meters or no payment

Residents of Okunola community in Mosan/Okunola Local Council Development Area of Lagos State have vowed to resist outrageous electricity bills and called on the Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company, (IKEDC), to provide them pre-paid meters without delay.

Speaking through the Duro-Olaleru Crescent Community Youth Development Association, the residents said outrageous bills were slammed on them without regular power supply.

A community leader, Mr. Joshua Faboye said the community needs pre-paid meters and constant electricity supply, adding that some tenants had packed out of his house because of power failure and crazy bills leaving him with no choice other than to use rent collected from new tenants to pay outstanding bill.

He said: ” When they were charging us about N750 for electricity consumed the Minister for Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, warned the electricity distribution companies not to issue bills to consumers if pre-paid meters were not installed, but IKEDC did not obey the instruction.’’

Faboye lamented that the exorbitant bill has negatively affected businesses and social lives of the people living in the area.

“I am a retiree, all the money I generated from my house I give it to IKEDC because tenants will pack out. Immediately they pack out the new tenant rents will be used to pay IEC bill. If they don’t give us pre-paid meters, they should not to give us bill.

Another member of the community, Mr Olu Toyin complained that the IKEDC gave preferences to a nearby community.

“Ever since the company was privatized we have not been seeing the best of them. Where I live, IKEDC distributed pre-paid meters from Iyana Ipaja, Egbeda and Alabata Streets. They stopped there to jump to Okunola and moved to Abule Odu to distribute the meters. We have gone to their office to complain all to no avail.

“They bring crazy bills like N20,000 and N50,000. There is even a  house that is owing up to N1,000,000 which I think is impossible and because they are not running any factory there. In my house, I paid a sum of N10,000 every month, we are pleading to them to bring the pre-paid meter so we can pay for what we are consuming.

The spokesman of IKEDC, Felix Ofolue however said the affected consumers have not been abandoned saying: “We have not abandoned them. Everyone knows the current economic situation of the country and harsh business environment which has also affected not just IKEDC but other electricity distribution companies across the country. Even if we have the resources to procure pre-paid meters, we still have to factor in the cost of engaging technical personnel to install them. In spite of the challenges, we have been installing the meters in phases and as we speak, we have installed the meters in places like Idimu and Government Reservation Area (G.R.A) in Ikeja. The residents of the affected community should exercise patience and we shall get to their area soon.

‘Concerning the issue of crazy bills, we have a way of monitoring power supply and consumption and this we do by installing a metering device inside transformers in several communities. Through this, we are able to monitor the consumption of power supplied and bill consumers. The only challenge we are having is that of electricity thieves which has rubbed off on genuine consumers. To this end, I want to urge residents to be vigilant and expose those who are stealing electricity, not for prosecution but to ensure that they are properly billed.’’

23-yr-old Delta polytechnic graduate arrested for kidnapping, murder

A 23- year- old National Diploma (ND) graduate of the Delta State Polytechnic Ogwashi-Uku, Obed Ikenna Oluchi yesterday confessed to have been lured into crime because of his desperation for money to repay his creditor.

He said he ventured into crime after he embezzled money meant for online sports betting at the betting house where he worked.

He made this confession yesterday at the Delta State Police Command where he was paraded alongside four others for attempted kidnapping and armed robbery.

According to him, “I work with Bet9ja.I just completed my ND from Delta State Poly Ogwashi-Uku. I studied Office Management and Technology. I was misled by a friend, because I needed money. A policeman came to our betting shop and he played a game worth N30, 000 which I only booked but did not bet because I thought it will not win. But the game won and the policemen wanted to claim his winnings worth over N250, 000. Because I did not bet the coupon I could not give him his winnings. So it was an attempt to find money that lured me into crime. The owner of the betting shop was angry when he found out what happened”.

Delta State Police Commissioner, Mr. Zanna Ibrahim who briefed reporters said the suspect was a member of a gang that attacked Mr. Amobi Molokwu in front of his gate behind Cornerstone International School ,off Okpanam, but he narrowly escaped .

He said the hoodlums succeeded in robbing him of his RAV 4 Jeep with a number plate ASB 176 AV, his phones and other valuables, adding that “intelligence gathered technologically led to the arrest of Ignatius Obagha in whose possession the victim’s Infinix phone was recovered.”

Ibrahim said Ignatius Obagha following his arrest confessed and mentioned Obed Ikenna Oluchi, Ifeanyi Aniekwe,Ifeanyi Nwosu and Mustapha Ali a.k.a Bababyo as gang members .

Ibrahim said Obed Ikenna Oluchi was also involved in the robbery incident that occurred at Globe Supermarket, Okpanam on 27/7/2017 resulting in the murder of a lawyer Festus Ashiedu.

Obed Ikenna said he did not know he was going to use a gun and that he thought he was only going to help his friend carry the N1.5 million during the robbery at the supermarket.

He denied killing the lawyer, adding that the lawyer was struggling with their gang leader with the keys of his cars and he was shot in the process.

His words: “I was not the one who killed the man, it was the ring leader that killed the lawyer. Someone switched off the ignition of our getaway car so our leader wanted to snatch the car from him and was struggling with our ringleader for the car keys and was shot. Our attempt to rob the supermarket failed as the N1.5 million had already been moved before we got there”.

  • Suspected robber stripped, beaten to stupor in Lagos

Suspected robber stripped, beaten to stupor in Lagos

A suspected robber, Dare Animashaun, was last Saturday stripped naked and beaten to a stupor by an irate mob after a failed operation.
Animashaun, who claimed to be 19 years old is a member of a two-man gang that specialises in robbing innocent residents at dawn in the Agbelekale area of Abule Egba, a Lagos suburb.

The duo had robbed a number of passers-by on the Ekoro-Abule Road until about 5: 40 a.m when they robbed one Hope Osa of his handsets and undisclosed cash at gun point.
Instead of giving up his valuables easily to the robbers, Hope summoned courage and gave the fleeing robbers a hot chase shouting ‘’;thief, thief’’ without any help from passers-by.

As a decoy, the robbers too were said to have shouted ‘thief, thief to confuse bystanders as to who the real thief was.
By the time they got to Omi Ata bus stop along the road, Animashaun’s partner who was holding the gang’s locally made pistol had bolted leaving him behind.

Chased by the victim to Adeniyi Street, the suspect jumped into a building on the street while Hope raised the alarm that attracted residents, who combed the houses and smoked out Animashaun out of a toilet where he was hiding.
The angry residents punched, kicked and slapped the suspect before tying him to a stake after stripping him naked.

It took the intervention of some community leaders to save him from being lynched to death by irate youths in the area.
Speaking with The Nation, at the scene, Hope said: ‘’I am a trader at Katangowa Market in Abule Egba. This morning left home home very early
In order to get to the market on time but I ran into the two-man gang at Ekoro Junction. One of them flashed a torch at me and before I knew what was happening he brought out a gun while his partner asked me to bring out my money and phones. I told them that I had no money on me and this suspect (Animashaun) rough handled me and removed my phones and money from my pocket and they fled.

‘’ I did not know how I gathered the courage to pursue them as they fled on foot on the Agbelekale-Ekoro Road. As I ran after them I was shouting ‘’thief, thief’’ but passers-by did not come to my aid until one of the robbers bolted but I kept pursuing this one (Animashaun) and when he knew that I was unrelenting he jumped into a building on this street following which I raised the alarm that attracted residents.

‘’He was brought from a toilet where he was hiding by occupants of the building and some youth leaders in this area.’’
The suspect pleaded for leniency at the stake where he was tied saying: ‘’My hands are bended and would serve no useful purpose for me again. Please untie me, I will cooperate with you. I have lost the phone we collected from our victim while I was trying to escape by jumping into a building.’’

A cross section of residents said a gang of robbers had been terrorising the neighbourhoods lately.
They recalled how one Sulaiman, a commercial motorcycle operator popularly called okada was robbed of his motorbike and killed by robbers who posed as passengers.
A resident, Akinola Oluwafemi said: ‘’Not a few people have been robbed at dawn by these suspects. They would attack innocent residents at dawn especially workers who usually set out in the early hours.
‘’About one month ago, the same two-man gang robbery gang and killed an okada rider called Sulaiman by smashing his head with a big stone on Saubana Street,’’ he added.
The suspect was later handed over to a team of policemen from Meiran Division at about 8 a.m. and taken to their station.
