  • Herdsman beheads girlfriend in Ekiti

There was panic on Wednesday at Ilasa Ekiti in Ekiti East Local Government Area of Ekiti State where a herdsman killed a lady said to be his girlfriend.

The herdsman, whose name could not be established last night, reportedly chopped off the head of the lady with a machete.

The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, has thrown the community into confusion and fear.

The victim is said to be of the same tribe with the suspected assailant.

She was reportedly attacked near a stream where she had gone to fetch water with her younger sister.

The assailant was said to have ambushed the lady and brought down her head while she bent down to collect some water from the stream and took to his heels.

But he was arrested through the information provided by the younger sister of the deceased who witnessed the scenario.

Information by the residents, including the traditional ruler, the Alasa of Ilasa, Oba Ajayi Omolagba, revealed that the lady had been allegedly handed over to the suspected assailant as a future wife while she was still a teenager, in consonance with their custom and tradition.

But trouble started last month when the suspect allegedly requested the lady to spend the Eid-el-Fitr with him.

The failure of the family of the lady to release her before, during and after the celebration angered the suspect.

He was said to have assumed that the contract had been breached by the family, hence the dastardly act.

Another report said the lady, after growing up, noticed that the “husband” was a drunkard and drug addict, thereby avoiding him for necessary marriage arrangements.

Some relatives of the deceased, who did not want their names mentioned, expressed sadness and shock over the incident.

They said the suspected murderer made a request to spend the Eid-el-Fitr with his wife, adding that the lady was supposed to go to him the next day before he killed her.

Addressing reporters, Oba Ajayi Omolagba condemned the incident, saying the community had been in shock since the incident occurred.

The monarch said the families of the parties and their landlords had been summoned to a meeting where resolutions were reached on how to forestall future occurrence.

He added that the community would also make necessary appeasement to God as such incident was strange and a taboo in the land.

Police spokesman Caleb Ikechukwu said investigation had been launched to unravel the cause of the criminal act while more details would be made available to reporters.

  • Man arrested for allegedly diverting diesel worth N10.7m

A 40- year- old oil and gas marketer , Ayodeji Owoeye who claimed to be a former operations manager of LAGBUS has been arrested by the police for allegedly diverting two trucks containing 53, 000 litres of diesel worth over N10,700,000.

His arrest was effected by operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team(IRT).

Owoeye allegedly posed as a staff of LAGBUS and contracted one Mr Omotayo to supply 20 litres of diesel oil worth N4.5 million to him on September 2018, but had not paid him a dime since. Instead, he allegedly kept giving the same excuses on why he could not pay the debt.

It was said that each time Omotayo asked Owoeye for his money, he would lie to him that he was still processing payment and that he should exercise patience as the money would soon be ready.

In February this year, the suspect called the complainant again to supply 33,000 litres of diesel worth N6.2m and has since not paid for the fuel supplied.

Exasperated by the refusal of the suspect to defray the debt, the complainant wrote a petition to the IGP Mohammed Abubakar Adamu through IRT’s Commander, Abba Kyari, a Deputy Commissioner of Police.

Upon his arrest, it was discovered that the suspect not a staff member of LAGBUS but was merely using the company’s premises to deceive his victims.

In his confessional statement to the police, the suspect said he had been operating from LAGBUS office to impress his victims by posing as the operations manager of the metropolitan bus company.

”Yes, I initially asked him to supply 20,000 litres of diesel to one Mr. Joseph who told me that he wanted to use it for internet mast for N4.5 m. I have been doing business with Joseph for over three years now.I don’t know why he couldn’t pay me up till now. At times when I called him on his phone it would be switched off.

‘’I also met the victim Mr. Omotayo again for supply of 33, 000 litres of diesel worth N6.2 and as I speak he has not paid me a dime. Even his phone is switched off as I am talking to you. The total money I am supposed to pay Mr. Omotayo N10.5m.

‘’It is my fault because Omotayo does not know Joseph but I did not know that Joseph will behave like this. I have tried to locate him without a trace. I did not conspire with Joseph to divert the diesel. My problem is that I could not trace  Joseph’s whereabouts to prove that it was Joseph I supplied the 53,000 litres of diesel worth N10.7m. I am the person Mr. Omotayo knows as the buyer.

”I was full operations manager in LAGBUS. I was asked to leave when new management came. So, that background gave the courage to enter LAGBUS office freely and that was what made the victim Mr. Omotayo to believe me. I am no more working there, I was sacked.

‘’I never knew Mr. Omotayo. I went to LAGBUS office at Ojota and behaved as if I was still working there. The victims saw me coming out of LAGBUS office and thought that I was still working in that office.

‘’I did not supply to LAGBUS fuel dump rather there was tank stationed there for the deal. I pretended as if I was still working there. They saw me coming out of the office and the deal clicked. I did not even sit down at all and they believed me.

‘’I am a Business Administration graduate of the University of Lagos and I made 2.1 in 2004. That I was relieved of my work does not stop me from visiting my friends at LAGBUS offices. It has happened and Joseph cannot be reached. I don’t know what to do again.’’
