The police in Lagos have arrested two suspected members of a gang that specialised in snatching vehicles around Lekki and Ajah.

The suspects, Sunday Ikechukwu and Gabriel Collins were paraded yesterday by the state’s Police Commissioner, Mr Imohimi Edgal at the state Police Command Headquarters in Ikeja.

It was gathered that Ikechukwu, the alleged leader of the gang, had on September 4, fled with his boss’ Honda Accord car with registration number LSD33DF.

The suspect was said to have relocated to Ghana, while police operatives attached to the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS) Ikeja were on his trail.

Thinking that the matter had been forgotten, the suspect was said to have returned to Lagos, where he formed a four-man car snatching syndicate around Ajah.

It was gathered that a fortnight ago, the gang snatched a Toyota Corolla car from its owner whom they locked inside the boot.

Unknown to the suspects, the car had tracking device which enabled the owner to open the boot from inside and escaped.

Undeterred, the suspects were said to have gone to the same neighbourhood they snatched the vehicle to sell it, but they were apprehended by policemen who have been tracking the vehicle.

According to Edgal, the police recovered the Honda Accord stolen by Ikechukwu in September as well as the Toyota Corolla from the suspects, adding that efforts were on to arrest other members of the gang.

The police said they swung into action shortly after the incident and arrested Abubakar,  Mohammed (now in hospital), Mariam, and their friends, who were involved in the bloody fight.

Police spokesman, Othman Abubakar, told newsmen that the arrest of the suspects was a result of deliberate efforts to check crimes across the state.

He said Abubakar’s gang had first started a fight on November 20 when they attacked Mohammed’s gang at a gathering and that the police had stepped in to stop the fight, only for it to be repeated the next day and taken to the extent that Mohammed would at best now come out of hospital as a young man without a left wrist.

A source said that it was Danladi who helped the police to arrest his girlfriend.

In her confession, Blessing said: “I am not a blackmailer; neither am I a prostitute. I was just broke and I was looking for money.  My boyfriend and I came to Abuja when our school was on holiday to look for money but things were not looking too good for us. Therefore, I went to the streets of Abuja to see how I could help myself.

‘’One of such days, a man in a vehicle gave me a ride to Gwarimpa area and while in the vehicle, he requested to know more about me and I told him who I was. I told him that I was seriously broke and that I needed to prepare for school resumption and he offered to assist me.

‘’He took my phone number and promised to call me.  Few days later, he called and asked me to meet him in a hotel at Garki area. When I got there, we had sex after which he gave me N5000, but I told him that the money would not be enough, because I had to buy foodstuffs and other items I would need, but he said that was all he had.

‘’So I took his naked picture while he was standing and  gave it to my boyfriend, who contacted the man and demanded for money by threatening to upload it on the internet, but the man ended up not paying any money to us.

‘’I also met one Gado at Wuse Zone 2, and we had sex. I told him that I needed money for school but he gave me just N4000.  I also took a photo of him while he was naked and gave it to my boyfriend for blackmail and to extort money from him. I also blackmailed a man who offered to give me a job after sleeping with him. The man later gave me his business card and asked me to call him and when I called him, he invited me to a hotel and we had sex, after which he gave me just N1000 and asked me to call him later for the job he promised.

‘’I took his picture while he was naked and I sent it to my boyfriend, who  started blackmailing the man and threatened  to publish it online.  The man became tired and told him to go ahead and  he stopped talking to the man.

‘’The one that landed us into trouble was that of a man named Danti whom I met in an eatery at Jabi area of Abuja and we became friends. He later took me to a hotel at Lugbe area, where we had sex and  I took a picture of him after he finished taking his bath and he gave me N5000 after the whole show.

‘’I was angry because I was expecting him to give me more money.  I gave his nude picture to my boyfriend and this time, we ran a search on him and we found his wife and other family members on social media.

‘’My friend, Danladi, contacted him and threatened to send the picture to his wife.  He also told him that he had his wife’s phone number and those of his friends and siblings.   The man became worried and begged him not to do such. • ‘Demands from my wife pushed me into robbery’

A 38-year-old suspected robber, Ibrahim Kazeem, has confessed that he took to crime in order to satisfy his wife who was persistently demanding money from him.

Kazeem was recently arrested by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Lagos State Police Command.

He is the leader of a four-man robbery gang, which specialized in beating up their victims before pushing them out of moving vehicles

The suspect, who claimed to have abandoned his job as a commercial bus driver for robbery, said: “I am from Okeho town in Kajola Local Government Area, Oyo State, but I was born in Ajegunle, Lagos State.

‘’I am the first child of my parents, who are now late. One of my brothers is a 500 level Industrial Chemistry student in one of the universities in Nigeria. Another one is in secondary school, while two others are learning handiwork here in Lagos; I am the one taking care of them.

‘’My problems started when I married my wife. She gave me children(sic), but she did not obey me. Instead, she continued to make more demands that overstretched me. Instead of cutting her coat according to her size, she would tell me to do what real men do, no matter the risk.

‘’There was one soup I told her that I used to do charm, and that on no account must she touch it. When I went to work, she went and destroyed the charm, despite my warning to her that if the soap is destroyed I would die. Having realized that she had no value for my life, coupled with too many demands from her, I sent her away from my house.’’

He said his estranged wife relocated to Ojo, where she got a new apartment and now lives with his children.

‘’This overstretched me because I am still taking care of my children. As a commercial driver, I used to go home everyday with two or three thousand naira after delivery of five thousand naira to the owner of the bus, yet it was not enough to take care of my family.

‘’I was still managing (as a commercial driver) until one of my friends named Tijani and my conductor brought the idea to rob people and make quick money. They called it advanced pickpocket work. It is different from ‘one chance’ because we don’t use force or weapon to collect phones and money from victims.

‘’This is what we do; the conductor and Tijani, would start haggling the fare while the bus is on motion. As the argument becomes heated, members of the gang who posed as passengers would start disposessing passengers of their phones and money.

“On October 30 October, 2018, along Surulere area, we did not know who alerted the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr Edgal Imohimi, and he directed the officer in charge of FSARS, Mr Peter Gana, to pursue us.

Hezekiah said: “ I have been to prison for the same ‘one chance’ operation two years ago. This boy, Tajudeen is a bad friend. He joined the gang on his own. He had no problem before he joined the gang.

‘’I have  robbed more than five times, but I haven’t saved up to N50,000, because of the type of life we; we live as if there is no tomorrow.

In his confession, Tajudeen said:’’ I am from Ibadan, but Oga Hezekiah wanted to assist me with a sum of N10,000 which my sister needed urgently as a  student, but instead of helping me, he lured me into his gang.

‘’I have followed them to work (operation) more than five times, but I did not save up to five thousand naira as I am talking to you.’’

Police source said the suspects would be charged to court at the end of the investigation.
