Carpe Diem unveils new collection of head pieces

TO satisfy its teeming fans for stylish headpieces that will stand them out anywhere, Carpe Diem Designs has launched a new collection to the public. The collection comprising fascinators, headpieces, hats, mini-hats and bridal accessories was informed by the need, according to Oluwagbon Oshinowo, Creator Director of the brand, ‘to create unique pieces for the discerning, flamboyant, fashion conscious woman who wants unique designs that will stand her out.’

“It’s a collection to satisfy different needs and taste, from the very simple, subtle and demure designs to the very classic and outstanding. There’s something for everyone,” she enthused.

“There are a lot of feathers, lace, cord lace and other embellishments used in this collection to create the designs that can match any you can find on the international ‘fashion forward’ fashion sene. They can be worn with both ethnic and formal clothes,” she added. Her staple materials include sinamay straw, feathers, silk flowers, crystals, Swarovski stones, tulle, and wearable fabrics like aso-oke among others.

On the inspiration for her designs, she stated: “I get a lot of inspiration from nature like flowers, plants, animals, birds. In my work you find a lot of feathers, anything that has wings, butterflies, the movements of the ocean waves. I also use gemstones a lot as Nigerians love sparkling things. All this are combined with traditional millinery techniques to create beautiful, unique and intriguing headpieces. Our designs are unique and not the generic styles you see everywhere. Every piece tells a story. This year there’s a lot of teal, yellow and purple in fashion and I incorporate these colours in my designs. “

“Some clients are muses who inspire one too, who keep one abreast about what’s happening in the fashion world. They make you think outside the box, they push you.”

The stunning headpieces can be worn to social events such as birthday parties, weddings, christenings/baby dedications, church services, red carpet events even funerals, she disclosed, noting that they are mostly sold online and through word of mouth.

Oshinowo, who studied fashion design at Yabatech and is also an art educator and facilitator at the Zaris Fashion Academy, Lagos, incorporated everything she has learnt in the garment making industry, millinery and observing trends and combined them to create the pieces. “I have worked in the fashion industry at so many levels but found out that making fascinators had evolved from a hobby to a profession. Hats had always been a passion but I had done it side by side with my work in the fashion industry but it was when the demand for these things became very high that I decided to give it the same equal amount of attention,” she said.

Starting officially in 2004, she has today garnered a client base that cuts across different age groups, class, backgrounds and net worth. “Our customers range from the very simple to the most elaborate and flamboyant. We work with clients’ budgets so we have pieces for everyone and not just the rich. I don’t think beauty or elegance should be restricted by one’s pocket,” she noted. Her designs, she pointed out stand out because the pieces are artistic. “We use good quality materials to get the best. Our finishing is also world class as we do quality control. Our products speak for themselves so they have to be perfect. Our products are our best advertisement,” said the designer.

  • Get that unique look with a gown

THIS gown takes your dinner to the next level and ensures that you make a lovely entrance!  One interest thing about fashion items is that they have a way of bouncing back. Gowns of various designs, hues, lengths and sizes are still hot items.  They are the rave of the moment.

There are several features that make gowns unique. But one major reason why they standout is that they offer the wearer a freedom which no other dress can offer. They are always very comfortable to wear.

Many women now grace social events, parties, wedding ceremonies, cocktails even church services with gowns of different lengths.

“This is the season of stylish gowns and it is going to be sown alone (one) or mixed fabrics,” says Busola Isiaka, the petite lady behind Labussy Creations.

The good thing about this gown is that it can be worn at any function, as office, informal or formal wears.  Gowns are not new fads. They were very popular in the 60’s and 80’s.

  • Ethnic touch

    Ethnic touch

CONTEMPORARY designers of clothing and jewellery are drawing a great deal of inspiration from ethnic textiles and designs. The good thing is that it is not only women who go the extra mile to enjoy this ethnic touch in order to be noticed or different. A look around, especially at socials and other events, show that men are joining the queue. Since the beginning of the year, men’s wardrobes and fashion have been tilting towards indigenous fabrics and designs.

As a result, fabrics are being mix-matched to produce bold and amazing results. Many designers are churning out colourful and bold wear made with local fabrics. Because the fashion scene is changing so rapidly, men are also becoming interested and growing more confident about what they want.

  • Get your brows right

    Get your brows right

A TRENDY lady does not joke with her appearance. Part of what constitutes a stunning look of a fashionable lady is an excellent make-up. However, there is a saying in the world of make-up that “get the brows wrong, get the entire make-up wrong”. Beautiful Brows, a UK specialist cosmetic company brings to the door step of Nigerians a powder eyebrow definition that is sweat proof, water proof and can last for days when worn called.

The product comes in a black and white-coloured kit. It comes in five different colours, two of which are peculiar to the African soil due to our colour: chocolate and dark brown. The kit contains a highlighter, brush, three stencils marked bold, sleek and natural, a double brush, magnifying mirror, tickle and a brow powder labelled Beautiful Brows.

To make an excellent brow, you have to choose one of these stencils as the occasion demands. Place it on your eyebrow, matching the highest point of the stencil with the highest point of your eyebrow. Pick up the brush with a double edge and dab the powder onto the brush. Work with the brush back and forth, meaning in both directions to achieve an even result. Focus on the skin rather that the hair of the eyebrow because the powder stays more on the skin than the hair. Dust the stencils well, place them on the other eyebrow and repeat the same process. The use of highlighter is optional.  With this, you have given your eyebrow a perfect definition. Effects, the product is known to produce no side effects. It is said to have undergone sixteen different tests, even on patients with cancer in the UK.

  • Men rocking HATS

    Men rocking HATS

A TREND in male fashion that cannot go unnoticed today is the use of hats. From the typical Igbo hats, hats are better in quality and style today. They come in varieties of shapes, colours and sizes and go almost on anything ranging from traditional wear to English wear, even cutting across casuals.

You can easily notice the trend on red carpets. Men rock hats. And they look stunning in them.

Hats today have gone far beyond traditional caps. They have gone beyond use in traditional weddings and occasions. Today, hats can be worn almost anywhere, everywhere and even for formal events.

Hats are colourful and beautiful on their own. But they can be further beautified. Another trend I see in the world of male fashion today is the use of feathers with hats. You could take a risk, place a colourful feather or two at the side of your hat to make it look better.

Hats will not only improve your look this season, but will also keep your head warm. It is a must-have in every male wardrobe not only because it makes you stand out, but because of the season.

You can never go wrong with hats provided you go for the sort that fits your face and suits the occasion.

  • Trendy knickers

    Trendy knickers

KNICKERS have come a long way and they seem to have come to stay too. It is no longer just a casual outfit as it can be combined with other clothes. It is suitable for a wide variety of sporting and exercise activities as well as casual lifestyle and stylish fashion styles for everyday wear.

Whether you are a professional, just playing in the backyard with mates or looking for a stylish outfit, there is a short knicker to suit your needs and there are a lot of trendy styles to make you look your absolute best.

And sandals are the most casual option-fine for beachwear, but they are not good for a party.

Shorts worn with closed-toed shoes usually look best with ankle socks.

Slip-on casual shoes like suedes, loafers or boat shoes are also good companions to shorts, and they don’t require socks.
