Countdown to 38th Miss Nigeria Beauty Pageant, Charity Ball

Created in 1957, the Miss Nigeria Beauty Pageant is Nigeria’s foremost pageant and discovering platform for young ladies. Notable among them are beauty queens such as Grace Oyelude, Julie Coker, Helen Prest-Ajayi, Binta Sukai, Vien Tetsola, Sylva Edem, Ene Lawani and Damilola Agbajor to name a few.

The annual Miss Nigeria Pageant, the 38th in the series, will take place on July 6 at the impressive Intercontinental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos. This year’s pageant has become a strong symbol of African culture and tradition and is brought to you by the African Times Network.

This year’s theme, ‘Every Nation Needs A Queen’, is centred on unity across the 36 states in Nigeria to promote beauty in diversity. The event promises to be more engaging and fulfilling in hope that it will further unite Nigerians across its many cultural divides.

Prior to the main event, the 36 contestants will be entered in for a reality TV show titled ‘The Making of a Queen’. The show will be filmed in Lagos and other neighboring cities and will run for a period of two weeks. During the show, the contestants would be given tasks and have interactive sessions with their fellow contestants. They would then be judged based on their elegance, poise, talent, intelligence and beauty. After a rigorous and nail-biting process, they would be narrowed down to 21 finalists who will then move on to the grand finale where they will compete for the crown, and a winner will emerge.

The event would be a platform to support less privileged kids. Funds will be raised towards the cause – Education: A salvation for kids.

  • Do you care for clean chin?

Do you care for clean chin?

THERE’S nothing quite as frustrating as cleaning up with a close shave, only to suffer from razor bumps. But, if you suffer from razor bumps and ingrown hair, there are ways to combat this unsightly and uncomfortable condition. Razor bumps occur when the skin gets irritated or when it starts itching after you have shaved. What follows next are bumps which will form small hard outgrowths that cause a lot of discomfort and pain.

Finding a solution to this condition is always a difficult task. Nevertheless, there are several ways to combat these tiny ugly monsters. For example, there are some bump removing products that are highly effective.

However, adhering to the following rules, one could minimize the effects of razor and shaving-related skin irritation.

*Rinse your blade under hot water before you begin to shave.

*Scrub your face with a facial scrub lotion. This will help remove dead skin, bring out ingrown hair and reduce razor burn rashes.

*According to some school of thought, the best time to shave is after you must have taken a shower or after washing your face in warm water.

    *Use new razor blades always.

*If you are using an electric clipper, be sure to clean and sterilize the blades regularly.

*Brush off hair on the blade after each stroke.

*After you must have completed shaving, wash your face and head in cold water with antiseptic soap.

  • Top skin rules

•First golden rule: Drink plenty of water; water will detoxify the blood stream and aid the free flow of blood. Drinking at least seven to eight glasses of water every day helps purify the body from within and helps flush all the harmful bacteria out. Avoid too much intake of soda and other alcoholic drinks since these can lessen our youthful look.

•Second golden rule: Try as much as possible not to touch, pinch or scratch your skin, especially the face.

•Eat lots of fresh fruits. Fresh fruits and vegetable plus a good, healthy diet can make skin healthy and at the same time help you achieve a balanced weight.

•Wash your face with plain water; avoid using soap because too much soap can dry up your skin and steal its natural oils.

•Moisturising body cream is good for the season.

•For your skin to retain its glow throughout this cold period, you need to look for a body cream that contains some vital vitamins.

•Also, body creams that contain avocado oil and sunflower oil will make the skin glow and warm.

•After you wash your hands, use hand cream to seal in moisture.

•Ori [African shear butter] is good for this cold period.

•Drink or rub aloe vera juice on your skin; though it is very bitter, it helps to keep a smooth and clean face. It’s worth the stress.

•If you have the capacity, exercise; sweating does wonders for the complexion!

•Always use a facial wash that prevents blemishes and, more importantly, moisturises. You may not appreciate the effect today but it will certainly go a long way.

•Take off every bit of makeup at night before bedtime.

•Lastly, before going to bed, mix some olive oil and vinegar and rub on your face and wash off in the morning.

•Use glycerin-based soaps or face washes; apart from the fact that you will get a great cleaning without the dry feel to your skin, these brands of soaps also stabilise the skin and create a hostile environment for bacteria.

•Exfoliate once a week so that dead skin cells would not clog your pores.

  • Great choice in casual footwear: Men’s sandals

Great choice in casual footwear: Men’s sandals

MEN don’t always want to dress in a corporate way at all times. You can still look good wearing slippers or sandals for casual outing, and they will look beautiful and lovely on your feet. Slippers or sandals are of ultimate convenience, comfort and offer a great casual look.

Men’s sandals can be worn for indoor or outdoor purposes. They work great with native wear and jeans, so you may find it helpful to let the style of your shirt guide you. Polo shirt might work.

It makes you feel free and look younger than your age. It also has a sexy feel.

•Try to pick a pair of sandals that contrasts, or that is darker than your pants.

•If you wear a belt, try to pick the shoes that match it, unless, of course, your belt is multi-coloured.

•Try to put on casual clothes as much as possible when putting on your sandals.

  • White Charming

    White Charming

DO you know the colour of the moment apart from yellow, black and beige? Well, it is no other than white which is often referred to as a ladies’ colour. Trust the ladies, they are living up to that saying; strutting out in white of diverse fashion item from clothes (especially tops and gowns), bags, shoes, hair scarves, neck scarves, hair ruffle, belts, beads, handkerchiefs, wrist and head bands. White is everywhere; white, like black, goes with virtually all colours, provided you get your combination and coordinating power right, because getting a perfect match also depends on the style and the accompanying accessories.

For instance, you can brighten your black suit ensemble with a white shirt, hair band, ruffle or better still a white neck scarf. In as much as being the reigning colour, it must not be “overdone”, tone white with other colours, do not make it an all-round angelic affair.

Your top could afford to come in white, if you are wearing a black or cream pant or skirt and it could be the other way round.

  • One in 10 Americans is a shopaholic, says survey

A NEW survey shows that over one in ten Americans, 11 per cent, to be exact, consider themselves to be shopaholics. This is no surprise, particularly considering the survey was done by CouponCabin.com, a website that lures people into buying things they probably don’t need by offering temporary discounts.
