The budget: A deep vision for economic transformation

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has presented the 2025 budget to the National Assembly. Beyond the usual budgetary details, the President earmarked 52 per cent of non-debt spending for infrastructure, writes ASSISTANT EDITOR NDUKA CHIEJINA.

The N49.8 trillion budget for next year highlights a commitment by the Tinubu Administration to drive economic transformation. The financial estimates focus on capital expenditure.

A significant sum of N16 trillion, representing 52 per cent of non-debt spending, is allocated to capital projects. This shows the government’s resolve to tackle structural inefficiencies, boost productivity, and foster inclusive economic growth.

The budget prioritises transformative projects across transportation, energy, healthcare, and education sectors. The investments in the sectors are essential for reducing transaction costs, streamlining logistics, and facilitating the efficient movement of goods, services, and people.

Moreover, enhanced infrastructure creates a fertile ground for economic expansion by attracting domestic and foreign investments. It also spurs productivity across key sectors, such as agriculture, manufacturing, and technology, thereby unlocking the full potential of Nigeria’s economy.

By emphasising infrastructure development, the budget serves as a blueprint for fostering sustainable growth, addressing long-standing structural challenges and positioning Nigeria as a competitive global player.

This capital-intensive approach reflects government’s recognition that robust infrastructure underpins economic resilience. The targeted investment is designed to yield long-term benefits for businesses and individuals, from improved transportation networks that lower logistics costs to better energy systems that power industries.

Thus the budget sets the tone for a decade of transformative progress, firmly placing Nigeria on the path to inclusive prosperity.

Infrastructure as catalyst for industrial growth and job creation

The budget recognises the indispensable role of reliable infrastructure in driving industrial growth and fostering economic diversification. By prioritising investments in transportation networks and energy supply, the government aims to eliminate logistical bottlenecks, promote inter-regional trade, and enhance industrial integration. These envisioned strategic improvements are critical for facilitating agricultural and mining activities and attracting manufacturing investments.

These investments will drive value chain development, expand production capacities, and significantly boost Nigeria’s overall economic output.

Improved transportation networks, such as roads, railways, and ports, are essential for ensuring the smooth movement of goods and raw materials across regions, thereby connecting producers to markets more efficiently.

Likewise, investments in energy supply—particularly through renewable and alternative energy sources—will reduce business production costs, ensuring a stable power supply for industries and households. These are expected to create a more conducive environment for domestic and foreign investors, fostering industrial growth and strengthening Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

Furthermore, capital projects stand out for their labour-intensive nature, especially in the construction and infrastructure sectors. From road construction to the provision of energy plants, these initiatives will generate immediate employment opportunities, driving household income growth and stimulating local economies across the nation.

Construction jobs provide short-term relief and serve as a gateway to long-term career opportunities. Workers engaged in such projects acquire new skills in engineering, logistics, and project management, enhancing their future employability.

By coupling infrastructure development with job creation, the budget promotes a sustainable cycle of human capital development. As more Nigerians access skills training and employment opportunities, the workforce becomes better equipped to contribute to the nation’s industrial and economic transformation.

This dual impact—strengthening infrastructure while empowering individuals—positions the budget as a decisive tool for tackling unemployment,   poverty reduction, and fostering inclusive growth in the long term.

Through these targeted investments, the government demonstrates its resolve to address systemic inefficiencies and unlock Nigeria’s full industrial potential. By doing so, the budget lays the groundwork for an economy that is resilient, diversified, and inclusive, driven by robust infrastructure and a skilled workforce.

Multiplier effects of capital expenditure and human capital development

The increased allocation to capital expenditure in the budget is designed to unleash a multiplier effect on the  economy. Payments to contractors and workers engaged in infrastructure projects translate directly to higher disposable incomes, driving increased household consumption and aggregate demand. This surge in spending invigorates economic activities across ancillary sectors such as retail, services, and transportation.

As economic activity intensifies, businesses in these interconnected sectors experience increased patronage, which, in turn leads to higher production levels and expanded employment opportunities. This self-reinforcing cycle of economic expansion underscores the significance of a robust capital expenditure in stimulating not only immediate growth but  long-term economic stability.

By prioritising infrastructure investments, the government is setting the stage for sustained development that benefits industries and individuals.

Equally transformative are the budget’s allocations to social infrastructure, particularly in healthcare and education. Improved healthcare facilities—ranging from modernised hospitals to accessible clinics—contribute to a healthier population.

A workforce unburdened by frequent illnesses is more productive, reducing absenteeism and improving outputs across all sectors. Moreover, better healthcare infrastructure minimises economic losses associated with high out-of-pocket medical expenses, freeing up resources for savings and investments.

Similarly, the focus on educational infrastructure serves as a cornerstone for enhancing human capital development. By expanding access to quality education, the government is equipping citizens with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a dynamic global economy. Investments in classrooms, laboratories and teacher training create an environment conducive to learning, fostering a skilled and competitive labour force  essential for economic diversification and global competitiveness.

The intersection of infrastructure development and human capital investment shows a strategic approach to economic planning. By addressing both physical and social deficits, the budget will ensure that economic growth is inclusive, sustainable, and rooted in the empowerment of Nigeria’s greatest resource—its people.

With healthier, better-educated citizens, the nation stands poised to reap the dividends of a productive workforce capable of driving innovation, entrepreneurship, and industrialisation.

This dual approach will not only address immediate challenges but  position  Nigeria for long-term economic resilience. By prioritising capital expenditure with direct benefits for both physical and social infrastructure, the government is crafting a vision of shared prosperity that aligns with its overarching goal of national transformation.

Addressing regional disparities and accelerating economic diversification

The budget employs focused capital expenditure as a pivotal strategy for addressing Nigeria’s persistent regional disparities. By channeling funds into underdeveloped areas, the government aims to stimulate local economies, attract businesses, and ensure equitable development across the country.

Improved infrastructure in these regions—ranging from better roads and energy supply to modernised healthcare and educational facilities—has the potential to invigorate local economic activities and integrate these areas into the broader national economy.

This approach holds significant promise for reducing socio-economic inequality, which has long plagued the nation. Enhanced connectivity between rural and urban areas will foster inter-regional trade, expand markets for local producers, and provide communities with access to essential services. Over time, this integration will help balance the scales of development, creating opportunities for underserved regions and contributing to a more inclusive economy.

In parallel, the 2025 budget’s emphasis on economic diversification reflects a clear commitment to reducing Nigeria’s over-reliance on volatile oil revenues. By prioritising investments in non-oil sectors, the government is laying the groundwork for a resilient economy driven by diverse revenue streams. In particular, investments in agricultural infrastructure—such as irrigation systems, storage facilities, and processing plants—are expected to significantly boost productivity, enhance food security, and create value-added agricultural products.

Moreover, the development of industrial parks and export-processing zones stands out as a cornerstone of the government’s diversification agenda.

These hubs are designed to attract both domestic and foreign investors by providing favourable business environments with reliable infrastructure and streamlined regulatory processes. By fostering industries such as manufacturing, technology, and agro-processing, these zones are expected to enhance Nigeria’s non-oil exports, contributing to foreign exchange earnings and reducing the nation’s vulnerability to global oil price shocks.

This shift toward a diversified economy will not only strengthen economic resilience but  create job opportunities across a broad spectrum of industries. A thriving agricultural sector, for instance, will support value chains that include transportation, packaging, and retail.   Industrial parks will foster innovation and technological advancement.

By addressing regional disparities and accelerating diversification, the budget positions Nigeria for sustainable and inclusive growth. The targeted investments aim to unlock the potential of every region, ensuring that no part of the country is left behind in the pursuit of economic transformation.

Through these initiatives, the budget underscores a vision of shared prosperity that aligns with national and global development goals.

Leveraging infrastructure for economic resilience and tackling challenges

The government’s focus on infrastructure development is a strategic move to position Nigeria as a competitive destination for both domestic and foreign investments. Enhanced infrastructure significantly lowers operational costs for businesses, creating an environment that fosters private sector participation—an essential driver of sustained economic growth.

Reliable roads, power supply, and efficient logistics systems reduce overhead expenses, streamline operations and improve the ease of doing business.

Infrastructure-led development also plays a critical role in building economic resilience. By diversifying the economy and enhancing productivity, this approach equips Nigeria to better withstand external shocks such as global market fluctuations or disruptions in oil revenue. A more stable and diversified economy not only ensures sustainable growth but fosters long-term stability, enabling the country to weather economic uncertainties with greater confidence.

    Challenges and panacea

While the ambitious focus on capital expenditure promises substantial benefits, it is not without risks. Challenges such as corruption, inefficiencies, and delays in projects’ execution could undermine the effectiveness of investments. To safeguard the anticipated outcomes, robust monitoring mechanisms are imperative. These mechanisms must ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to projects’ timelines and budgets. The government must also strengthen institutional frameworks to combat corruption and enhance efficiency of public spending.

Debt servicing, which is projected at N16 trillion, represents another critical challenge. Striking the delicate balance between borrowing for growth-oriented projects and maintaining fiscal sustainability is essential to avoid excessive debt accumulation. Borrowing must be strategically targeted toward high-impact projects with measurable economic returns.

Additionally, exploring innovative financing models, such as public-private partnerships (PPPs) and concession arrangements, can help reduce  debt burden while ensuring infrastructure development.

Large-scale spending, if not carefully managed, could also trigger inflationary pressures that may destabilise the economy. Monetary authorities must work closely with fiscal policymakers to implement measures that mitigate inflation risks. Strategies such as phased project implementation, prudent fiscal management, and leveraging domestic resources can help stabilise prices while sustaining economic growth.

In the face of these challenges,  government’s proactive planning and commitment to transparency will determine the ultimate success of the 2025 budget.

By addressing these risks head-on, Nigeria can maximise the transformative potential of its infrastructure investments, fostering an economy that is not only inclusive and competitive but resilient and sustainable in the long term.

Police arrest international ‘fraudsters’, reject N66m bribe

Two suspects alleged to have specialty in certificate forgery have been arrested by police operatives attached to the Assistant Inspector-General (AIG) Zone 2, Onikan.

The suspects were alleged to have specialised in forging documents of various international universities, as well as allegedly defrauded several unsuspecting victims on the internet.

Elvis Osakpolo Edokpain, 23, and Kelly Osas Endgieen, 24, were alleged to have acquired exotic vehicles and erected mansions in different parts of the country with the proceeds of fraud.

Added to their alleged charges is the attempt to bribe detectives with N66 million to be let off the hook. It was gathered that the investigation team had to report the development to the AIG, Adegoke Fayoade, who directed them to play along with the young men to secure the money as exhibits.

Their arrest, it was gathered, followed a tip-off to the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Zone that there was a group of boys who engage in forging foreign certificates.

The unit, acting on orders from Fayoade, laid ambush on the suspects who were said to have been out of the country at the time.

Acting on credible intelligence, detectives were said to have stormed the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos, from where they trailed the suspects to a hotel at Osapa-London in Lekki.

It was gathered that the young men soon got wind that the police were after them and made to flee the hotel but were arrested at the bus stop with their luggage.

Sources alleged that upon search of their luggage, detectives found a certificate from Blue Crest College, Ghana, belonging to Edokpiain, while a student identity card of Academic City College was recovered from Kenny Osas.

Further search indicated a transcript of an academic record from Blue Crest University belonging to Elvis Osapolo. Going through the search again, detectives discovered a letter of English proficiency from the said college and a letter of recommendation from the same Blue Crest College.

Reports said that upon interrogation, the suspects made useful statements to the police and confessed that they never got any admission into the school, that they procured the degree certificate through the help of a female Nigerian resident in Ghana.

The suspects further stated that their goal was to get Ghanaian resident permits, as students which they got.

Police sources further stated that the suspects confessed that they were made to pay 15,000 Ghana cedis (N1.5 million) for the certificate and 5,000 Ghana cedis (N500,000) for the resident permit. They reportedly paid a total of 26,000 Ghana cedis to procure the documents.

On further interrogation, they said they were doing it to evade arrest in Ghana since they don’t have any means of livelihood.

According to the suspects, whenever police intercepted them, they showed their passports that they were students and had no means of livelihood in that country.

They further confessed to the police that they were into online romance scams and provision of foreign bank accounts for fraudulent transactions through “Facebook bombing”.

The suspects said: “We meet people online and present ourselves as American soldiers by name Captain Donald Rowe, whom we are impersonating on Instagram. He is a captain of the United States of America and on a peacekeeping mission in Syria.

“While we are engaging our victims, we will tell them that there are goods in Syria that if they are interested to buy, they should pay money and we will send the goods to you. We will show them pictures of good materials in Syria.

”After they make the payment, we use our block chain wallets to collect the money or foreign bank accounts, which at last, are being credited in our Nigerian accounts. We have our partners in the UK, South Africa, and other countries and most of our victims are from Japan, Denmark and China.”

Sources said the police have written to the Ghanaian High Commission to get more information about the result and their alleged accomplices  in Ghana said to be spearheading the fraud.

They have also spread their dragnet through the International Police, Interpol, to round up their foreign partners.

The suspects who claimed they were only able to attend secondary schools in Benin City lamented the fate that befell them stating that it was poverty and the need to make ends meet that drove them into fraud.

“The other container bearing automobile spare parts checked on Friday 13th December was found to contain 1, 735 parcels of Loud packed in 44 jumbo bags with a total weight of 867.5kg and six plastic coolers containing 87 packs of methamphetamine weighing 78.3kg. At least two businessmen: Nwanolue Emeka and Friday Ogbe have been arrested in connection with the seizure.”

The two consignments, which weighed 83.301kg, were worth N124,951,000 while the 867.5kg Loud is worth N2,168,750,000 .

The consignments were tracked from the Canadian port to Lagos by the Special Operations Units in NDLEA and their colleagues at Tin Can Port.

He added: “The first container with 5.001kg meth came under the radar of NDLEA’s intelligence network on 4th October 2024 when the preparation for the shipment began in Toronto, Canada, monitored through 8th October when the shipment was received at the rail ramp, loaded on the rail and departed to Montreal, Canada where it arrived and was unloaded the following day 9th October.’’

Babafemi continued: “The consignment was further monitored till it was loaded on a vessel on 19th October through when the vessel arrived and discharged at Antwerp in Belgium on 30th October after which the consignment was trans-shipped and loaded on 14th November before arriving Lagos port on 1st December and released to a bonded terminal two days after.

“The second shipment containing 867.5kg Loud and 78.3kg methamphetamine followed the same route. It came under NDLEA’s intelligence tracking on 8th October 2024 when the consignments were delivered to the shipper in Toronto, Canada, loaded on the rail on 14th October and arrived Montreal the following day, 15th, after which they were loaded on a vessel to Europe on 20th October.’’

He said after the trans-shipment at Antwerp in Belgium on November 6 and 17, the consignments were tracked from the vessel at Lagos port on December 6 before they were moved to the terminal four days later.

Babafemi said at the Port Harcourt Port Complex, Onne, Rivers State, 636,600 bottles of codeine-based syrup from India worth over N4.4 billion were seized on December 9,11, and 13,.

The seizures, he added, were made during an examination of four containers by men of the NDLEA, and Customs, among others, at the port.

Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of NDLEA, Brig.-Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (rtd) stated that the successes should show the drug barons and cartels that the agency has the capacity  to track their movements and their consignments even before getting to Nigeria. He said they would continue to lose heavily if they fail to back down on the criminal trade.

Meanwhile, the Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi yesterday said, Customs, in collaboration with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), intercepted over 695,000 litres of smuggled Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) petrol.

Adeniyi made this known at the 18th Africa Security Watch Conference in Doha, Qatar, according to a statement by the National Public Relations Officer, Chief Superintendent of Customs Abdullahi Maiwada.

Adeniyi, who gave the keynote address entitled: “Protecting National Security Through Effective Border Control: The Nigeria Customs Example,” emphasised the vital role of border management in national security, describing borders as more than just geographical boundaries. .

Adeniyi added that the NCS generated a record-breaking N5.1 trillion.

“We have equally strengthened partnerships with both domestic and international stakeholders,’’. he said.

The CGC noted that this achievement was not merely about numbers, but also reflected the efficiency of the Customs workers

The NCS also intercepted several arms shipments, including 844 rifles and 112,500 rounds of live ammunition at Onne Seaport.

“These efforts have significantly disrupted the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, which remain a persistent threat to national security. Additionally, the NCS’s collaboration with the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) led to so many interceptions of illicit drugs.” CGC Adeniyi said.

He also brought attention to the Service’s role in combating wildlife trafficking, detailing how officers intercepted 4,200 kilograms of pangolin scales and ivory, underscoring the NCS’s dedication to biodiversity conservation and international compliance.

The CGC said the use of geospatial technologies, such as satellite feeds and geo-mapping, has enhanced the Service’s surveillance and enforcement capabilities, ensuring that these operations are not only effective but sustainable.

Meanwhile, the NCS clinched the ‘Best National Security Service in West, East, and Central Africa 2023/2024’ award at the event.

Bago also revealed that his government was planning to distribute 1,000 electric tricycles to ease  movement in the state.

    • Plateau

In Jos,   Commissioner for Transport  Davou Gyang said the primary barrier to implementing the  CNG initiative in the state was an insufficient number of refill stations.

Gyang told The Nation that a private firm,   Greenville Energy, which built a CNG station in Nasarawa State, is to set up one in Plateau at no cost.

He said: “We have not given them(Greenville)  the go-ahead because having a conversion centre without refill  stations is as good as not achieving anything.

‘’There has been no significant uptake or conversion of local vehicles to CNG due to the lack of refill infrastructure.

“We are also having discussions with the National Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) to identify a temporary site for vehicle conversions to CNG.

‘’ They have built a CNG station in Nassarawa State and currently building another in Kaduna. Plateau has yet to receive any single CNG vehicles. We have the intention of converting the Plateau Riders vehicles to CNG.’’

    • Imo

Transport Commissioner  Chika Abazu said  Governor Hope Uzodimma   tasked his ministry  to create a comprehensive CNG strategy

He said: “The plan capitalises on the state’s rich natural gas resources, aiming to generate jobs, slash transportation expenses, and stimulate economic growth.

‘’We have started key components construction which include building three main CNG stations and associated smaller stations and vehicle conversion centres.

“This infrastructure will enable widespread CNG vehicle adoption, providing drivers with lower fuel costs and environmentally friendlier transportation.’’

He added that  Mashati Energy was committed to establishing a major CNG facility and conversion centres in the state.

    • Akwa Ibom

The state government is yet to make a decision on whether or not to key into the CNG initiative.

Governor Umo Eno had earlier said his administration was understudying the workings of the CNG, especially as it pertains  safety.

  • Pastor in row with husband of church member over paternity of 4-yr-old

Pastor in row with husband of church member over paternity of 4-yr-old

    • My son exposed his amorous affair with my wife – husband

    • She’s been my lover for 20 years – Embattled clergyman

A pastor based in Ogun State is locked in a messy paternity row with a commercial driver following a secret affair between the clergyman and the driver’s wife exposed by the driver’s 14-year-old son, KUNLE AKINRINADE reports.

A rancorous scene occurred at the premises of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Ona Iye Parish in the Iloye area of Sango-Ota, Ogun State penultimate week as a commercial driver swathed by his family members and associates clashed with the pastor and founder of  the church, Prophet Abiodun John, in a scandalous paternity row.

The driver, Badiru Folarin, who is the husband of a female church member brought to the church for spiritual healing, screamed that the pastor claimed ownership of his four-year-old child after he caught him having an illicit affair with his wife, Morufat.

Folarin claimed the pastor’s sexual escapades with his wife was revealed by his 14-year-old son, Saheed, who told him that his mother was always visiting and cooking for the clergyman while he was away and that the cleric in turn visited their home at odd hours.

He said: ”The pastor claimed that my in-law had given my wife to him as his wife. However, the question is, can a woman be given to two men as wife?

”The pastor confronted me to my face that he is the biological father of our last child, a four-year-old. Yet my wife rained curses on me, saying that Ogun (Yoruba god of iron) should strike me dead so she can enjoy her benefactor.

”I am a driver. I never enjoyed my wife at home. She was always away to church for several days in the guise of vigils and special spiritual protection. My mother-in-law was disturbed about my wife’s continuous absence from home under the pretext of participation in church activities.”

Amid the yelling, screaming and cacophony of noise at the scene, Morufat told her husband’s family members and bystanders that she was not in the least prepared to leave her husband, although she conceded the paternity of the child in question to the embattled pastor when asked to choose between the latter and Folarin.

She said: ”No one should blame me for what has happened…and If you all must know, I cannot be married to two men in my life…but my husband is not ready to take care of me, he is a shameless man…I will deal with him when we return home.”

Folarin, however, retorted: ”You cannot come back to my house…anything can happen to you if you come back to my house.”

Recalling how the messy affair between the pastor and her wife began, the father of six said he did not believe that the clergyman was having an affair with his wife when neighbours alerted him until his son tipped him off that his wife was having a tryst with the cleric at his house within the church premises.

Folarin said: ”I did not realise that the pastor was sleeping with my wife.

“I am a Muslim while my wife is a Christian. She was having some spiritual attacks and went to the church for deliverance.

“Suddenly, she started frequenting the church, and when I heard that she was having an affair with the pastor, I confronted her but she denied it.

”She would send my children to me for upkeep while at the church and I usually sent money to her, not knowing that she was using my money to prepare meal for her pastor-lover.”

”The pastor knows me very well. He had even given me some spiritual items for use that would attract fortune, but my transport business witnessed a reversal of fortune instead.

”I have been married to Morufat for more than 30 years and our first child is 30 years old. I was giving her about N6,000 every day for upkeep.

“When I got home a few days ago, she rained curses on me. Her action got my 14-year-old son, Saheed, angry, and he opened up that his mother had been flirting with the pastor to the extent that she was cooking for the cleric with the money I have been giving her as daily upkeep.

“My son said his mother had just returned from the church where she took food to the pastor shortly before I returned home on that day.

”The pastor told me to my face that he is the biological father of my last child, a daughter (Alimot).

“I gave my wife the sum of N68,000 when she was pregnant with our last child, but she gave the money to the pastor and relocated to the church for several months under the pretext of seeking spiritual protection.

“Along the line, we had accommodation problem, and that was when I gave her money for a new accommodation. Instead, she spent the money on her lover and later claimed she was sick and that she used the money for treatment.

”Again, I got some money and got another apartment for her at Plaza area in Sango-Ota despite her insistence that she did not want me to get another accommodation.

“I warned her against having any close affair with pastor and asked her to stay in the new apartment.

“Surprisingly, she complained she did not like the fact the apartment is in a one-storey building.

“I would give her N3,000 in the morning and N3,000 in the evening because I usually left home around 5 am to take early turn to pick passengers at the motor park.

“Last week, my son told me that his mother had been with the pastor’s house for four days. I stormed the place and I was shocked to find them together in a room half naked.

“The pastor tied a towel around his waist while my wife also tied a piece of cloth around her waist while she pushed two of my little children to play outside the room.

”She started abusing me and calling me all sort of names. I reported the affair to my wife’s uncle and the old man slapped the pastor for luring my wife to bed to the extent of impregnating her.

“We tried to take my children away from her but she bit off my hand while the pastor claimed that he is the father of my last daughter, who is my sixth child.

“The pastor told all of us at the scene that he is the biological father of my daughter and that I cannot take the girl away from him.

“My wife said she was not ready to leave me and that she cannot also leave her pastor-lover.

“I later discovered that she had aborted a pregnancy for the same pastor some years ago.

“I cannot take my wife back and because the pastor has vowed to deal with me.

“I have 13 siblings and only three of us are the surviving children of my parent.

“I don’t want the pastor to kill me. Nigerians should save me from the ruthless pastor.”

Speaking with our reporter, Saheed, Folarin’s son, who allegedly exposed his mother’s illicit affair with the pastor, said his mother threatened to poison him for exposing her affair with the pastor.

”My mother threatened to poison me for exposing her escapades with the pastor of our church to my father.

“She called me an unfortunate child for telling my father that she even cooked for the pastor.

“I know she attacked me because I knew too much about her secret affair with the pastor.”

Giving his own side of the story, Pastor John explained that he is the biological father of Morufat’s sixth child.

He said he had been having an on and off affair with the woman in the last 20 years.

He said: ”My name is  Prophet John Abiodun, the founder and pastor of Cherubim and Seraphim Church, Orisun Iye Parish.

“I have been dating Morufat for about 20 years now. She told me that her husband abandoned her with two children.

”My church was formerly located in the Ijamido area of Ota before I moved it to Iloye area of Sango-Ota.

“Morufat came to my church about 20 years ago with two young children, Serifat and Saidat, for deliverance and spiritual protection.

“When I noticed that she did not leave after some time, I asked her to bring any of her family members.

”She later invited her aunt called Mama Lekan, who frequently visited her at the church.

“She stayed with me in the church for about six months, during which we started an affair.

“She later left and I did not see her again until about a year later.

”By the time she returned to my church in 2004, she was already pregnant for her husband.

“I reprimanded her for getting pregnant for the same man she had claimed was irresponsible.

”She said her husband had abandoned her again and bolted with a widow.

“I took her to a hospital when she went into labour and carried out special prayers for her and she was safely delivered of the baby. Afterward, I did not see her again.

”I ran into her again when I was supervising the construction of my new church building in the neighbourhood of the apartment where she lives with her husband.

“She later ran to me when she was owing a lender, and that was when we reignited our affair.

”She had a disagreement with her husband and said she was no longer interested in her marriage.

“She said she would have left her husband a long time ago but for her mother’s insistence that she must not leave her husband. By that time, she already had five children.

”My affair with her and the controversial pregnancy led to the separation with my own wife who could not stand it and left me about three years ago.

“Morufat’s mother knows that I am the real father of the baby, and I struck a deal with her mother who was accompanied to my home by one of her friends that I would come back for my daughter when she is 10 years old.

“It was during the discussion that my wife overheard that I was responsible for Morufat’s pregnancy, hence, she quit our marriage.

“It is a pity that Morufat’s mother is not here. I would have challenged her to say the truth.

”I took her(Morufat) on my motorcycle to the hospital when it was time to deliver the baby.

“I paid for her delivery at the hospital, although I heard that her husband had given her the delivery money too before she was discharged from the hospital.

“I was not the one that buried the baby’s placenta: her husband did. However, I am sure that I am the biological father of the girl.”

Prophet Abiodun boasted that he is not ashamed to affirm his affair with Morufat and that she was impregnated by him.

”I can boldly say that I was responsible for the training of some of her children in vocations.

“The husband was not responsible for the upbringing or naming of any of their children.

“Morufat ran to me one day and had a clash with my wife, and that was when my wife took the final decision to leave me.

”I cannot be ashamed to say it anywhere, any day, even it is on a radio programme.

“I named the girl Bose because she was born on Sunday, while her husband named her Shadiat. She was a twins as was revealed to me by ‘God’, but the second child was evacuated from her womb dead.”

Prophet Abiodun, however, added that he cannot take Morufat as wife because of her past relationship with other men.

”I cannot marry Morufat because I know about her journey and some of the men she had dated in the past,” he said.

“I am only claiming my child because I know that she was impregnated by me and I have a scan of the baby.

“Morufat is 46 years old, and she said it in the presence of everyone that I am the real father of her last baby.

“Besides, my family members and hers know that I am the real father of the baby, and I am saying it again that I am not ashamed to say so.”

My husband brutalises me for denying him three rounds of intercourse, says Police Superintendent’s wife

•Husband: I’ve prostrated before her on TV programme
•Accuses her of sleeping with other men

An Ogun based housewife has accused her husband of brutalising her each time she turned down his demand for three rounds of intimacy. KUNLE AKINRINADE reports that the brutality the police officer meted out to the woman left her with injuries and trauma.

Nine years ago, a family member introduced then Miss Dolapo Olupona to Taiwo Ogunrombi during a visit in Lagos and the two began a relationship that culminated in marriage. However, the relationship that began as a sizzling romance has turned traumatic for Dolapo, a native of Ikare-Akoko, Ondo State, on account of Ogunrombi’s alleged sexual drive and brutal attack on her each time she declined his request for three rounds of intercourse.

A few weeks ago, Ogunrombi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) attached to the Mobile Police (MOPOL 2) Obalende, Lagos State allegedly descended on Dolapo, a trained fashion designer and mother of one, after she rebuffed his demand for multiple rounds of intimacy at their Sango-Ota residence in Ogun State.

“We started our affair on a good note, not knowing that he is the most unfeeling person in this world. He brutalises me for no other reason than sex,” Dolapo said.

“He has a high libido and unrestrained sex drive because of the packaged herbal drinks he consumes all the time. He does not take care of me and refuses that I work despite the fact that I am a trained fashion designer.

“If he finds out that I am working somewhere, he would storm the place, strip me naked in public glare and accuse me of hiding under work to sleep around with other men.

“On October 24 this year, when I rejected his demand for three rounds of lovemaking, he descended on me with fists and belt. He rebuffed neighbours who stormed our apartment until I almost passed out after sustaining injuries and bloodied face from the beatings.

“He has repeated the same thing a few days ago in November, hence I decided to cry out.

“He has refused to release my panties and clothes. He boasts that no one can save me from him and that he can do whatever he likes to me.

“The last time we went for mediation brokered by a television anchor, he told me on our way home that he would still make love to me three times and that there was nothing I could do to stop him.

“When we got home, I ran out of the house for him and slept outside.”

“I have told him several times that I cannot have three rounds of intercourse. Besides, he is not caring at all. He would not allow me to work, yet he wants to make love to me three times on each occasion.

“He should use the energy he is using to brutalise me to handle criminals instead of using it to attack me endlessly.

“I have lost jobs because he would come to my work place and beat me up. My previous employers said they could not retain my services because my husband was using his job as a police officer to destabilise their firms.

“If I don’t cry out now, he might kill me someday and nothing would happen as he boasts.”

She said she had reported her husband to his family but nothing came out of the family intervention as Ogunrombi did not listen to his family members, who asked him to stop brutalising her.

Dolapo added: “He has seven children from different women before I met him.

“When I reported him to his family members, they warned him to desist from brutalising me but he would not listen to them, because he feels that as a policeman, he can do whatever he likes and get away with it.

“He has consistently attacked me and I don’t want to wait till he kills me.

“His children say their father is treating me the same way he treated their mothers in the past. If I knew that he is not a good person, I would not have dated let alone marry him.

“I am not a wayward woman and he knows that I don’t like sex that much. Yet he would demand for three rounds of sex all the time. I do not like the way he treats me.

“I don’t sleep around with men. I have never abandoned home to sleep outside. He knows that I am not a promiscuous woman and I have proved that to him many times.

“He is only not satisfied with one round of sex and he suspects me of infidelity each time I turn down his demand for three rounds, saying that I have enjoyed myself with men outside and that is why I cannot satisfy his sexual appetite.”

Footages obtained by our correspondent showed Dolapo being attended to by a sympathiser shortly after she was allegedly beaten by Ogunrombi, who sat in a chair and blamed Dolapo for her woes.

The sympathiser was seen in one of the footages reprimanding Ogunrombi for the way he treated his wife.

”I am in pains…he has seized my phone after beating me up…if I knew I would not have come home today…pls talk to him to give me my phone so that I can call someone that would treat me of this wound,” Dolapo said in the footage.

Ogunrombi however claimed that he did not beat Dolapo, adding that he only pushed her to the bed when she held his shirt.

“I did not beat her…I pushed her to the bed in order to free myself from her grip when she held me by my shirt,” the policeman said.

An unnamed sympathizer in the footage is heard saying: “You (Ogunrombi) were only molesting your wife unnecessarily. Your marriage was not properly consummated yet you subject her to merciless beatings all the time.

“I don’t know why you would want to kill your wife for nothing sake. It is not as if your apartment is well furnished or tiled.”

The female sympathiser added: “I would have called the landlord of this house to come witness how you have been brutalising your wife. Did you catch her sleeping with a man?

“Are policemen this cruel to their wives…even if your wife is stubborn, must you kill her?  This is one brutality too many and it is not good for your image because neighbours now tag you as being very cruel.”

Responding on the telephone, Ogunronbi told our correspondent that the matter had been settled by the anchor of a television programme. He said he   was shocked that Dolapo was not satisfied with the outcome of the mediation.

He said: “I cannot say that we did not have a fight or that I did not beat her. But the matter has been settled at a television programme a few days ago.

“The anchor of the programme even asked me to prostrate for her and I did.

“I was angry that she saved a man’s name as her brother on the phone and I saw the flirtatious messages they exchanged and seized the phone from her since I was the one who bought her the phone.

“She flirts around with other men and would not sleep at our apartment for days. She would only return home by the weekend after sleeping around with men while I am away on duty.

“I have not slept with her for three months now because she denied me sex, and I still give her money for feeding and soup.

“I cannot hold her against her wish if she has decided to leave me. However, she should leave if she wants to leave, without further embarrassing me.”
