Funke Agagu smarts from hubby’s death

For Funke Agagu, coming to terms with the untimely death of her husband has been harder than she had envisaged. It might take a greater effort to mend her broken heart than melt a piece of iron. If you ever encounter the bespectacled former First Lady of Ondo State looking withdrawn and uninterested, it could well be because she has been battling with boredom.

The gentle and affable woman is gradually coming to terms with the harsh realities of life since her husband and former Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Agagu, slumped and died in his Lagos home last year. A family source said that Mrs. Agagu can hardly make a complete sentence without a reference to her husband.

For a woman whose children are all grown up and live in different parts of the world, and who was used to having all kinds of people around her in the heyday of her husband, adjusting to a lonely world of little or no political influence has not been easy. Although her Ibadan and Lagos homes are still being thronged by visitors with political leanings, she seems not to be showing much interest in politics.

Elohor Aisien’s exit from Miss Nigeria pageant

Owner of Beth Model Management, Elohor Elizabeth Aisien, is one high society lady who is adept at bidding a boring experience farewell to embrace more exciting activities. The former Miss Nigeria UK has bidden goodbye to her term as the anchor of the Miss Nigeria beauty pageant after two years in the saddle.

The Miss Nigeria team had handed over the creative and management rights to Elohor in July, 2012. She is widely acclaimed for organising one of the biggest fashion events in Nigeria. The Elite Model Look, which has been producing class acts in modelling on a yearly basis.

After restoring credibility and respect to the pageant as witnessed in the 2013 edition in which the reigning queen, Ms Akudo, emerged as winner, not a few people had looked forward to another eventful edition in 2014. Hence it came as a surprise to many when the news filtered in that Aisen Elohor had thrown in the towel.

She was said to have called it quits with the oldest beauty pageant in Nigeria in order to focus on her fast growing luxury event management company, Prive, which she launched last year. There are also speculations to the effect that she might have quit as a result of pressure from her husband, Owen, who was said not to be happy with the pressure the job was piling on his wife.

Two books: The Life of James Pinson Labulo Davis: A Colossus of Victorian Lagos and Worthy in Character and Learning, a collection of lectures and addresses by the founder of Lagoon Hospitals, Dr. Adeyemo Elebute, were presented to the public at the Metropolitan Club, Lagos, last Wednesday. NNEKA NWANERI reports.

DR. ADEYEMO Elebute, is one of Nigeria’s renowned men of stethoscope. However, the Professor of Medicine and Surgery penultimate Wednesday became an author when he presented his two books: “The Life of James Pinson Labulo: A Colossus of Victorian Lagos and Worthy in Character and Learning”, to the public at the Metropolitan Club, Victoria Island, Lagos.

The latter is a collection of lectures and addresses by Elebute, the founder of Lagoon Hospitals, in his over three decades of medical practice.

Among the early arrivals was the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu. He was accompanied by a retinue of Lagos white cap chiefs as he made for his seat on the high table. He was later joined by the chairman of the occasion, Mr. Fola Adeola.

For 30 minutes, the guests networked and exchanged pleasantries. They were decked in various attires traditional and English. Scores of chairs faced the high table, which had on its background, large portraits of the two books.

The programme which was anchored by Adesuwa Onyenokwe, a television presenter, began with the rendition of the national anthem. The anthem was rendered by Christine Ozoaga and Martins Osuho while Biodun Falode played the piano. Rt. Rev George Bako gave the opening prayer.

Students of the CMS Grammar School added colour to the event by putting up a wonderful performance that attracted applause from the guests.

Speaking, Adeola expressed delight that Elebute, who is a surgeon, has graduated from being a medical doctor to being an author. He said though the professor never met the hero of the book, he was able to make true discoveries about Davis. He noted that the late Davis was a philanthropist whose charity works affected the lives of people of Lagos State positively. “Prof Elebute is a brave man,” Adeola said.

Chairman of the Lagos State Securities Trust Fund, Mr. Fola Arthur-Worrey, who reviewed the books, explained that he felt a touch of envy for not writing the book. He said the striking characteristic of the book was the vividness of the imagery, rich with detail, which takes one back to Victorian Lagos (circa 1850-1900).

He said: “That was the age of gentlemen and gracious ladies. The time of the beginnings of “innocent commerce” replacing slave trade. The book reveals vivid snapshots of many facets of the life in Victorian Lagos; rich with personalities and politics, social scenery, business, failure and recovery.

The late Davis, a school teacher in CMS Grammar School, naval officer, mariner, merchant, farmer and industrialist, was one of the successful West Africans of the 19th century. He became famous through his political activism in the face of imperialism, his success in international trade and his marriage to Aina- Sarah Forbes Bonetta.

The book paints a vivid picture of the life of the Victorian era colossus and, by extension, a fascinating but largely ignored era of West African History.

Again, a piano recital and tenor solo was done by Falode and Osuho. It was entitled “Oloba”.

Oloba is a Yoruba folklore song by Mrs. Victoria Randle, daughter of Davis, which she gave to the famous Black British composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. It was used as the basis of the seventh of Coleridge-Taylor’s ’24 Negro Melodies’ published in 1905.

A former Pro-Chancellor of Bauchi and Abuja universities, who was a one-time Principal of Queens College, Lagos, Mrs Gbolahan Abisogun-Alo, reviewed Worthy in Character and Learning.

The book, published by Florence and Lambert, she said, “is on every position taken by the author over the years. Such positions are still valid and bother on character development and learning in the society.”

The book was unveiled by the grandchildren of the author, assisted by other guests, including the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola.

Oba Akiolu praised Elebute for a very good job since there was no document on the family. He told guests that there are many other details missing in the book, which the author should have beckoned on him to provide.

“He is a worthy son of Nigeria and of history, whose book has opened up discussions on the role of what the British did for Lagosians,” Oba said.

He led all to sing the ‘Birthday Song’ for Alhaji Lateef Okunnu who attended the event. Okunnu turned 81 that day and the wife of the author was 80 the Sunday before.

Fashola expressed dismay over the purchase of streets by individuals which are named after them.

He said such recognition should be earned through service to humanity, to avoid distortion of history.

“How can we explain to our children occurrences in certain areas when the names attached to some streets have meanings and have been changed?” Fashola asked.

Little Miss. Tara Odunsi, Prof Elebute’s granddaughter, presented flowers to the governor, thanking him for attending her grandpa’s book launch.

In response, Prof. Elebute said his intention was to write on the life of Davis and the role he played at that time.

“I am a fake historian. I only wanted to open up matters for discussion and leave the rest to the real historians.”

Femi Otedola, Aliko Dangote renew friendship

There is a popular saying that there is no permanent friend or permanent enemy in politics but permanent interests. This aphorism would seem to also apply to the friendship between two Nigerian business moguls, Aliko Dangote and Femi Otedola.

The two made a good show of their affection as they stepped on the green carpet together at a party organised by the Ibru family for one of their children a few days ago.

A few years ago, a major disagreement over their business interests nearly ruined their robust friendship. The feud saw the two not only going their separate ways but also haunting each other’s business interests.

In fact, it took the intervention of a popular publisher to restore their friendship. But today, they are back stronger and better together with a new regime of conviviality reigning between them.

  • Ade Dosunmu back on the radar?

Ade Dosunmu back on the radar?

It is often said that there is only a thin line between life and death. But the line between prominence and obscurity can even be thinner. That much can be deduced from the silence that has pervaded the world of Ade Dosunmu, the Lagos governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2011.

A few years ago, Ade Dosunmu was the name on the lips of many Lagos residents who thought that he had the clout to give Governor Babatunde Fashola a good fight in the 2011 governorship election. Everywhere he went, shouts of ‘His Excellency’ filled the air. He became the face of PDP in Lagos and no gathering of social significance was considered complete without his presence.

Backed by the Presidency in his quest for the number one seat in Lagos, he carried on as if the seat was already his until the electorate registered their unflinching love for Fashola and his party with their votes. Roundly defeated in the election, he left the political scene and paled into oblivion.

Now, it is being speculated that he is bracing up for another governorship contest in 2015. The truth or otherwise of the speculation will unravel in the next few months.

  • Good times return for Cecilia Ibru

Good times return for Cecilia Ibru

Behind every cloud, they say, lies a silver lining. Sadness might have tarried for the former Managing Director of the defunct Oceanic Bank, Madam Cecilia Ibru, after her travails in the hands of the Economic and Finacial Crimes Commission (EFCC), but her dark days can now be said to be over.

She looked radiant when she was sighted at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos last Saturday, where she hosted the traditional wedding ceremony of Omotuvie Alexia Ibru to Maxwell Herbert Peile. At the occasion, Cecilia was all smiles as she exchanged greetings with many dignitaries she might not have set her eyes on since the Oceanic Bank debacle and her consequent travails.

The occasion was graced by many top government officials, captains of industry and political bigwigs. It was an opportunity for the woman to re-integrate herself into the elite community of which she was once a prominent member. She looked every bit a woman at peace with herself. The only missing thing was the Oceanic Bank Pls-inscribed scarf she always wore around her neck.

    Pro- Chancellor’s daughter weds

When Chief Ramon Adedoyin, the President of Oduduwa University, Ile Ife, Osun State; Our Savior’s University, United States of America and The Polytechnic, Ife, Osun State, celebrated his birthday early in the year, many wondered why he did not invite many of his friends to The Source, as Ile Ife is fondly called. The answer to the question will be answered this morning as the historical town witnessed a huge influx of people as the educationist gives out his daughter’s hand in marriage.

Adedoyin is, no doubt, in cloud nine at the moment. While he derives a lot of joy from education and philanthropy, his main source of joy today would be neither of these but the marriage of his daughter billed to hold at the Hilton Hotel, Ile-Ife. The event actually began yesterday with an engagement ceremony at his magnificent mansion at Eleyele part of Ife.

“I will appreciate your presence as it will add a lot of glamour to the occasion,” Adedoyin wrote in the invitation he sent out to would-be guests.
