  • 300,000 jobs ‘ll be lost if foreign airlines leave Nigeria, says NANTA

THE National Association of Nigerian Travel Agencies ( NANTA) has said the country would lose about 300, 000 jobs if the foreign airlines stop flying into Nigeria as a result of the $591 million foreign airlines money trapped in Nigerian banks.

Speaking during a press conference at the NANTA House in Lagos, NANTA President, Mr. Bankole Benard, called on the airlines not to rush in withdrawing their services as the action would further deepen the current crisis which will affect 300, 000 jobs in the aviation sector, both upstream and down stream.

Bankole said the development was going to affect every body ,the travel agencies, government and the general public, stressing that if a ticket that supposed to be issued in Nigeria is issued in Ghana, the government will lose money.

He said: “The government is equally losing revenue to neighbouring countries as tickets can be purchased from outside the country and once that is done, the taxes on such tickets will not go to the government through the withholding tax which they would have benefited from such transaction.”

While calling on the government to resolve the matter quickly, Bankole noted that the aviation industry contributes to the country’s Gross Domestic Product, GDP.

Bernad also observed that if the industry is allowed to go down, it will affect the country as it will lead to more job loss like what is happening in the banking industry.

He, however, informed that the federal government has already instructed the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to come up with a flexible foreign exchange policy that will assist airlines to repatriate their funds.

NANTA boss stated that he is trying to build on what the previous executives have done.

  • Intercontinental adds Sunday Brunch

Intercontinental Hotel, Lagos is currently providing families in Lagos a chance for quality weekend outdoor dining. The culinary offering by the hotel includes champagne and international dishes from different parts of the world.

The idea, according to the hotel, is to give both locals and foreign guests opportunity to enjoy meals from different parts of the world.

Speaking on the innovation at the hotel, Mr. Ahmed Raza, the director of food and beverages, said: “What we want to promote is family festivity each week. We want the families to come here and have a great time with the music, the children activities that we have, with the dishes that we have that represent Nigerian, Italian, Indian favorites; we have cuisines from all around the world.

“It is just for the families to come around, have a great meal, and enjoy their time together every week. That is what we are aiming at. Sunday Brunch is a meal where people get together and  celebrate every week. “

The Sunday Brunch has turned the Ekaabo Restaurant of the hotel into a beehive of merriment with live music .

Raza said the new offering has been successful: “The culinary experience is coming very strong because what we have done is to merge all the flavours . We have a lot of strong chefs with us. We have Italian chefs, pastry chefs, Chinese chefs and a very strong group of local chefs.

“Fusing all these chefs together is making a lot of difference that is really setting us apart. We are offering a wide range of varieties at Intercontinental that is strong point for us. At Sunday Brunch, we bring all these flavours together at one platform. That is why people are coming back to us each week because when they come to Intercontinental, they get the  fflavour of everything, especially the Nigerian flavours which are improving day by day,”Raza said.

He said to make the Sunday Brunch even more satisfying for in-house guests and visitors, the hotel is providing champagne.

“Champagne is a sign of celebration. When people come, they get complimentary champagne with the meal. We are partnering Taittinger Champagne, and by tying up with them, we want to give our guests the best of Champagne. When they come in, they are going to have welcome Champagne which is of top notch brand. Like I said we are celebrating, and when families come in to celebrate, what better way to celebrate with a bottle of champagne. The champagne is complimentary, “he said.

On the cost, he said: “We are pricing it keeping competition in mind and the good news is that kids under the age of five eat for free. And during the Sunday Brunch we have one deal or the other up, like during the Father’s Day, fathers would eat 50 per cent off.

“Sunday Brunch is one particular meal that we are getting a lot of outside guests. Also in-house guests also like to come and have a good time, but mostly it is the out-side guests. Pricing has never been a problem for them because they really have value for money-music, champagne and wide variety of food. For them, the value is already there”.

One of the chefs, Chef Samson Balogun, spoke more on the Sunday Brunch: “From what we have, the number of people coming that we have been receiving for our Sunday Brunch has been increasing”.

Asked if it was a special, he said it was as if you are having meals from five different regions.

Also there was always the chef’s special which Balogun explained thus: “‘It is a secret recipe. This is what we sit down and create. It is not what every other hotel or someone out there is doing. We sit down and discuss and for example say: ‘ok, this is the rice, how do we make it distinct and tasty. By the time we come out with ideas, let’s add this and this and do it like this, we will come out with special. Every week we have something different.

  • Govt shouldn’t fund carnivals, says Amachree

Govt shouldn’t fund carnivals, says Amachree

An elder statesman and one of the leading tourism promoters in the country, Alabo Mike Amachree, has advised both the federal and state governments to stop investment in cultural carnivals.

Amachree, who organized the first Abuja Carnival in 1990 and the second River State cultural festival with other stakeholders in 1993 in Port Harcourt, explained that cultural carnivals are not capable of attracting inbound tourists to Nigeria.

He said: “It is merely a jamboree. For instance, the carnival usually organized in Port Harcourt and Abuja did not even attract local tourists talk less international tourist visitors.”

He said what can bring international tourists to Nigeria is investment in world-class tourist sites and museums where Nigerian culture and history will be displayed permanently.”

He said all the carnivals organized in the country in Calabar, Port Harcourt, Lagos and Abuja should be done by the private sector, while the government’s position should be to provide tourism infrastructure.

He reiterated that government is required to encourage and assist the private sector to grow as the success of the private sector is the only way the government could claim success in tourism.

Amachree said attractions such as the Natioanal Theatre, Lagos should be upgraded to first-class tourist centre. It should be named a film production village where artistes will entertain on daily basis. It will be likened to Hollywood in Los Angeles.

Also, he said the Yankari Game Reserve was the only game reserve that could compare to the Nairobi Wildlife Park in Kenya. He urged the Federal Government to partner Bauchi State in developing it.

The Port Harcourt Tourist Beach, he said, has the best location for aquatic tourism (boat regatta, boat cruise, fishing festival and swimming competition) in Nigeria.

The tourist expert described the Ogbunike Cave in Anambra State as a wonder of nature. He likened it to the Hercules, Tangiers in Morocco. He also called on the Federal Government to assist the state to develop the state into an international tourist site.

Wase Rock in Plateau State has been described as highest mountain in Nigeria compared to the Tanzanian Kilimanjero. Amachree said it should also be developed.

He also explained that the Emir of Kano Palace should be furnished with  antiquities and monuments, and tourists should allowed to tour the palace and savour the rich culture of Kano.

He said: “During my visit to the palace with members of the Nigerian Tourism Associations in the 1990, the late emir (Ado Bayero) and I agreed that the palace should be elevated to a tourist site. They will also enjoy the pleasure of horse display in the palace to know the history of the emirate. “

Finally, Chief Amachree recommended the development of the six tourist sites to ensure that the Federal Government is fair to the six geo-political zones in terms of federal assistance to tourism development and promotion in the country.

  • Ikotun hoteliers lose N3.9bn to Synagogue crisis

Hoteliers in the Ikotun area of Lagos State said they are currently suffering huge loss due to low occupancy rate in most of their hotels.

They said since the Synagogue Church of All Nations accident and the  consequent disagreement with the Lagos State government, the hotels have lost over N3.9 billion revenue.

The hoteliers spoke with some journalists under the aegis of the Pilgrims Hostels Association of Nigeria. They  said: “The total number of bed spaces of different categories of  hotels in the Ikotun area stands at about 3500. Before the accident, the hotels had 100 per cent occupancy rate in three days of every week due to the programmes in the church.

“The occupancy rates currently fluctuate between 10 per cent and zero all week long.”

According to them, what this meant was that in these three days, instead of having their normal 3500 bed spaces sold, they could only boast of 350 rooms occupied.

Chief Jerry Omoridion, one of the hoteliers said: “ We have been crying for a long time and the government does not seem to understand our plight. It is a serious issue for us because our means of sustenance is currently being wiped out. Look at it this way, you will understand what we are talking about.

“Before the unfortunate incident at the church, I mean the Synagogue Church of All Nations, cumulatively, we have a total of about 3,500 hotel bed spaces. I am not adding some of these hotels that were in the process on coming on board, but had to stop since the accident. The hotels have different categories of rooms, but for you people to understand the enormity of our loss, let me peg the room rates at just N5,000.

“That is the cheapest room rate in any decent hotel in Ikotun. Before the accident, we were having the 100 per cent occupancy rate on at least three days in a week. This may sound unbelievable. You are members of the press, go round and do your investigations.

“But now, the occupancy rate in these three days is less than 10 per cent. Many of my colleagues have reduced their staff to the barest minimum; some of us are doing the jobs we used to employ and pay workers to do, since we can’t afford to employ now due to bad business climate.

“With a 10 per cent occupancy rate only about 350 rooms are sold by our members every night. Many had zero occupancy on many occasions. What it means is that 3150 empty rooms, at N5,000 minimum per night, we are losing about N15,750,000 per night. In a month, the loss is at 189,000,000.

“ Multiply that figure by 21 months, you have a whopping N3,969,000,000 as loss of revenue. This is just a conservative estimate. Mind you, this money is injected directly into the community. Think about the multiplier effect on the economy of the area. You can understand why we are shouting loudly. I am just talking about three days that we were sure of patronage.”

Asked what he was expecting the government to do since the case was already in court, Omorodion said: “Look, this is a tourist destination. No area in Nigeria has a steady inflow of inbound tourists like Ikotun in Lagos. Go and do your research. Let me digress, I want you to go to the airport cab operators and find out how this has affected their business.

“Back to what I was saying, we insist that the government should understand that being a destination, all over the world, when there is accident, being mindful of the peculiar nature of the place, they should put in machineries to get to the root of the accident, take punitive action where necessarily without portraying the destination as unsafe and also overtly discouraging people from visiting there.”

  • Thumbs up for Ooni’s HURP crusade

Thumbs up for Ooni’s HURP crusade

Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja 11, is championing the course to reconnect Africans in the Diaspora to their roots through a tourism project called HURP, meaning  Hope, Unity, Rebirth and Prosperity (HURP) which his adviser and consultant, Otunba Wanle Akinboboye, has over the years consistently preached.

His zeal has also resonated across the world with many world leaders, envoys, business moguls and political leaders paying homage to him and receiving him in audience at different times.

These include the Brazilian envoy to Nigeria and that of Cuba. The Cuban envoy  hosted the oba to a world class dinner at his Abuja residence which was attended by the cream of the society.

The African envoys who have always formed part of his entourage to many events said the Ooni deserved to be celebrated for turning his attention to the well-being of his people, Nigerians and Africans in general and seeking to serve and not to be served.

They said the oba had demonstrated that he could be trusted to carry through this new vision as they outlined some of his activities to include the launch of a N6.7 billion grand resort in Ile-Ife, the declaration of Ile Ife as a tourism zone, throwing his palace open to the public and tourists, employing over 200 widows of the   Modakeke-Ife war.

Another action of his also applauded by the African envoys is his commitment to the unity of his people and that of all the traditional rulers in Yoruba and downplaying of his supremacy in his bid to forge understanding and unity among the obas and break the traditional barriers that have long existed among them, thereby depriving the people the much desired unity and wealth creation through their offices.

To this end, the oba has embarked on visits to many of the highly respected traditional rulers in the South West, including the Alaafin of Oyo, Soun of Ogbomosho, Alake of Egbaland and most importantly, visiting Modakeke with his gospel of unity, thereby consigning to history the age-long enmity between the two people.

He has also recently instituted the Clean Ife Competition (Gbafemon) with each street in the town, organising themselves into a team with a captain for the purpose of cleaning their respective streets. Evey week, a team of sanitary inspectors are expected to inspect the streets and give verdict with the cleanliest street awarded N100, 000, while any street that wins the award for three consecutive weeks is awarded N500, 000 by the Ooni.

Delighted by Ooni’s crusade, Akinboboye, the originator of the HURP concept said the oba’s action is a welcomed development and a jumpstart of ”HURP and a rebirth process, so that we can all prosper with his focus on what will enhance the life of his people and create wealth for them.

”If we create hope in our people, foster unity among our people and leaders and jumpstart a rebirth process as Oba Ojaja 11 is doing now, it will lead automatically to prosperity for our people and that is what we should all focus on,” said Akinboboye, who is also the Founder and President of La Campagne Tropicana Beach Resort.

Akinboboye revealed that this is what has endeared him to the African envoys and others, who are determined to see that the oba’s vision is brought to fruition.

“ The fact that the oba is young and educated makes his commitment to the growth and development of his people, Nigeria and Africa, a course to be taken on by everyone because he has aptly displayed a high sense of history, duty, responsibility and inspires confidence and trust,”he said.

The HURP vision, Akinboboye said, is designed to produce a truly Nigerian society and transform Nigeria from the “Niger Area,” a mere geographical expression which it is currently to a real nationhood.

Lamenting the fact that Nigeria is corruption ridden with self-centred individuals, parading the religious, traditional, educational, political and business spaces, hence Nigeria has remained underdeveloped.

He insisted that not until Nigerians make concerted effort to transform the country as the Ooni is doing, the nation will remain in its poor and beggarly state.

”The USA did not become united until fighting two major wars and through concerted effort and that is the same concerted effort that the Ooni is preaching today.

‘’It is this concerted effort that will build a better future for us as a people and we need to start showing our leaders and people that there is reward in doing the right thing and that the whole world is watching,” he said even as he insisted that one of the biggest problems of Nigeria today is that we don’t celebrate our heroes and heroines and showcase our role models rather we celebrate failures and glorify people who have plundered our commonwealth and consigned the future of generations unborn to a blea
