    NATOP unveils plans for AGM

The Nigerian Association of Tour Operators, NATOP, has unveiled plans for  its  annual general meeting, in Calabar, Cross River State.

The event slated for February 11 in Calabar  with the theme, “Nigerian Tourism: The missing link in a diversified economy” is set to re-position and restore the Nigerian tourism industry by taking it to a greater height.

Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos, the president of NATOP and chairman of Remlords Tours and Car Hire Services, Mr Nkereuweng Onung, disclosed that NATOP wants to give the tour operators a new direction by getting them also to  market the destination Nigeria at the AGM in Calabar.

Mr Onung stated that NATOP is inviting the owners of tourism products to come and meet with the tour operators so as to create a synergy.

He observed that Nigerian tour operators have been at the forefront of supplying tourists to other countries, stressing that the development has to change.

According to him, “Nigerian tour operators are the biggest suppliers of tourists on the continent. In 2015, Africa suffered a 3percent loss on arrivals down from a 4 percent annual growth in the past years. Yet despite a shrinking spending power due to failing oil prices, a lot of Nigerians still travelled abroad. The interim figure from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA showed that more than $1.5billion was spent on international flight tickets last year”.

The chairman of Remlords explained further that NATOP chose Calabar for the rebirth because it was in the state in the year 2000 that NATOP through the support of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, ADC, British Airways and Mrs Onari Duke helped to drive the rise of Cross River as a tourism destination.

”At this  AGM, NATOP will honour those visionary members and supporters who worked hard to create the tourism vision that Cross River implemented and delivered. Outside Cross River State, NATOP has partnered with 7 Wonders of Nigeria to promote the destination Nigeria. For the first time in Nigeria in 2012, the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation, NTDC involved Nigeria tour operators in the World Travel Market, WTM, NATOP also partnered annually with Akwaaba African Travel Market to bring people to Nigeria”, the NATOP President said.

  • Ogba Zoo cries out over land grabbing

The management of Ogba Zoo, Edo State has cried out over the pillaging of the zoo’s land by land grabbers. the management  has, therefore,  called on the state government to take decisive action in stopping the land poachers from further decimating this natural heritage, which over the years has suffered series of damage to its fortunes.

Following the latest incursions on the zoo by the desperate land grabbers, the management in an open letter to the governor of the State, titled: Further horrific destruction of Ogba Zoo infrastructure / nature park: Another open letter to the Comrade Governor, chronicles the ongoing plight of the zoo, which are symptomatic of anarchy. It reminded the governor of the recent decisions taken by Government to secure the Zoo but which have not been implemented. While frantically calling on the governor to immediately deploy state apparatus to restore order in respect of saving this priceless asset, the Zoo management also called for the setting up of a panel of enquiry as the last ditch effort to unravelling what appear to be conspiracies to share the Zoo land.

Fingered in these land poaching acts are members of the zoo’s neighbouring communities from Utagban and Ogbaneki, who are believed to be aided and abetted by some officials of the State government and members of the State House of Assembly. In this recent incursion, the land poachers deployed arson that destroyed over 70% of the zoo’s natural wildlife habitats, before the use of bulldozers, which has now turned the once forested land into a construction site for different private structures.

With the administration of Comrade Governor Adams Oshiomhole on its last lap, the zoo management is making frantic appeal to it to rise up to the challenge of stemming this encroachment crises in order to leave a good conservation and tourism legacy. The Governor’s urgent intervention is required since he is already abreast of the issues at stake and in order for him to ‘finish well’ his tour of duty as Governor of the state.

  • Apapa Amusement Park opens

    Apapa Amusement Park opens

Finally, Apapa is back in the family leisure map of Lagos with the opening of the 40-year-old amusement park.

The rebuilding of the amusement park was carried out in a partnership arrangement between the Lagos State government and a private company, Crystal Cubes Construction Company. The park has been remodelled and looks like a mini Dubai in Lagos.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mr. Folarin-Coker, who represented the Lagos State  Governor  Akinwunmi Ambode , at the opening ceremony had much to say about the new park.

He said: “ This is a partnership between the government and the private sector to provide this sort of edifice for entertainment and leisure in Apapa and environs. We believe it will work and this will continue to generate income, create employment and make more people come to invest.

“ In my report to the governor, and in our usual way of decentralizing things, that Apapa has one, why shouldn’t Epe, Ikorodu  and Badagry have one as well? So, I know in the next few years, we will have this in these localities.”

On the issue of traffic affecting patronage of the place, the commissioner said it won’t be so as the traffic situation has improved.

He said: “The traffic has improved. There is not city of the size of Lagos that would not have traffic issues, 24,000 square kilometers of fairly built up buildings. There is also the population density. Now, how many roads do we have?  22 per cent of Lagos is water. There is bound to be congestion. Maybe we should stop complaining about congestion and start seeking of alternatives.

“A look at a place like the Apapa Amusement Park here today, they have a good car park. I also noticed they  have an indoor football pitch, which means maybe on Saturdays, when people are coming to the  park,  some children are coming to play football or some parents are playing five-a-side in the evenings.

“I see they also have two function halls. I was even saying to them, you would need a multi-storey car park like the one you have in Ikoyi Club or Mega-Plaza, so that they can hold the volume of cars that come in here without spilling to the main road. We’ve got to make the best of what we have, we’ve got to consume more of what we have locally, and that is how we could become better.”

Folarin-Coker said with the huge population of Lagos, a place like Apapa Amusement Park will be a huge success yielding huge return on investment.

He said: “Whether there is a better one next to Lagos or not, it is the Mathematics of Lagos that is going to determine it. No African city has the density or population like Lagos, simple. How much money will those places turn over, how much money will this make? This will be a successful venture that would grow other ones in other localities within Lagos. I think that is what we should focus.

“The days of government paying for everything and we just consume have gone. Oil price is  27 dollars per barrel. The dollar is 300 naira to one dollar. Let us face economic reality here and now. So, whatever it is, if it is a car park in the area where car park is non-existent, come and partner  the government to build the car park. If it is hospitals, where we feel there are good private hospitals that want to partner the government because government has infrastructure that they can use.

“ We have to do business to provide for everybody.  We have to deal with those who have the wealth, who have the expertise, and with we, the constituted authority, we have to come together to create these things. Please, you are only bound by your imagination. Bring it on and we will access it, and if it works, I am sure the governor will do it.”

The commissioner for tourism said tourism is very much in the agenda of the current state government as means of generating wealth and creating employment.

The Managing Director of Crystal Cubes, Mr. Rabih Jaafar, in an interview with The Nation said the idea was to recreate the Dubai experience here.

He said: “When we came here, our engineers that are our partners, had the vision of an amusement park that he had seen in Dubai. All these buildings you see, they are like what you see in Dubai’s Jumeirah. So, he had the vision of building a kind of smaller version of Jumeirah because of the land.

“That is what we have done here. For the rides, we went through children and adults. It is not only for children. There are amusement facilities for teenagers and adults.

“There is the disco ride it is for adults. It can take 24 persons. There is also the bumper car for adults and children, carousel for children and adults, the rockets, the pirates’ ship for children, the spinner, and the tea cup for children. “

There is a whole lot for family fun in the Apapa amusement park including eateries and indoor activities.

The new amusement, according to the operators, opens daily.

  • Ooni adds glamour to Oodua Festival

Ooni adds glamour to Oodua Festival

Ile-Ife, the ancestral home of the Yoruba people, was in festive mood last week as the ancient town marked the first cultural-cum-tourism event this year, the O’odua Festival.

The O’odua Festival, one of the numerous festivals organised by the Olokun Festival Foundation, is held in honour of the progenitor of the Yoruba race. Held in front of the Ooni’s Palace at Enuwa, the festival is an opportunity to celebrate the rich culture of the Yoruba people.

Among activities at the two-day programme included a beauty pageant which was won by beautiful Miss Fadipe Toluwani Arike, a 100-level Dramatic Arts student of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State. She beat a pool of 16 other contestants to the crown.

The winner won for herself a car and other equally beautiful prizes, while the runners-up and other contestants went home with various gifts, including various sums of cash and household goods.

At the grand finale, which had in attendance traditional rulers, including the new Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and different cultural troupes, had opportunity to entertain the guests . The O’odua cultural troupe was also on hand to entertain visitors.

In what appears to be his first public celebration of a festival, the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ojaja 11, stepped out last week in glamorous fashion to celebrate the 2016 edition of the Oodua Festival in Ile-ife, Osun State.

Addressing the crowd that turned out for the festival,  Oba Ogunwusi said: “My main agenda is to unite Yoruba to bring about peace. When peace reigns in Yorubaland, it will reign in Nigeria, Africa and in the world at large. We are the symbol of unity, advancement because democracy, technology and others started from us in Yorubaland and we must take back our position as a leading race in the world.

“Almighty God really blessed us with all that we need in Yorubaland , but He is not happy with us because we are not united. Therefore, we have to put  everything behind us and come together as brothers and sisters , direct descendants of Oduduwa so that we can enjoy the full potential that we are endowed with.”

The monarch called on all Yoruba leaders and traditional rulers to brace up for the new challenges, unity, growth and development of Yorubaland. These should be our concern and   we should all join hands to make Yoruba race  great.

Also speaking, the National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples’ Congress ( OPC) and Chief Promoter of  the Olokun Festival Foundation (OFF), Otunba Gani Adams, tasked Yoruba traditional rulers to key in to the peace and unity agenda of  Oba Ogunwusi and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi, in order to take the Yoruba nation to greater height.

According to him ,“The Ooni and Alaafin have started the process of  unifying Yoruba sons and daughters. I wish to call on  all Yoruba oba to join hands with them to make sure that the Yoruba race attains its God’s ordained  potential and become  a reference  point in the development and peace.

“If we  all come together to unleash our minds and open  our vision to positive things and begin to see the great future that is before us, then  and only then would we realize that the land of the legendary Oduduwa is destined for greatness.

“Yoruba is a serious-minded race that any other race in the world will not take slightly. If the Yoruba moves forward, it will encourage the entire African continent to move forward. So, the unity of Yoruba is more useful to Nigeria as a country and to Africa as a continent.”

The festival Guest Lecturer, Professor Akin Alao, A professor of Legal History at the Obafemi Awolowo University, in his lecture, entitled,  ‘Culture and Socio Imperatives  of Yoruba Unity: The Pivotal Role of Yoruba Monarchs’,  submits that Yoruba monarchs should be the champions of  their peoples’ rights and priviledges in the management of  relations within the Nigerian state.

According to him, any injury to one in Yorubaland must be considered and taken as an injury to all. He maintained that Yoruba solidarity must be constructed on the pillars of truth, justice, equity and collective progress as a race and a people.

The programme was attended by over 50 traditional rulers in Yorubaland  and thousands of members of the OPC  and the OPU, including several top  actors and actresses.

Fuji act, Abass Akande Obesere, treated the crowd to scintillating songs.

  • ‘Tourism needs greater attention’

    ‘Tourism needs greater attention’

TOURISM, all over the world, is regarded as a key economic activity to generate income for a country. It is a source of employment and in most cases, proceeds from tourism goes directly to the host community where the tourism activity takes place.

That is why tourism is seen as a veritable tool for poverty alleviation and creation of wealth. The huge labour needs of different sub-sectors of the tourism industry, most especially the hospitality industry, has made the industry a key source for job creation. The least number of staff a hotel with10 rooms will employ is 10.

The World Travel and Tourism Council, the world’s leading private sector tourism organization, in its report on 2015 that covers 184 countries and 25 regions of the world said travel and tourism generated US$7.6 trillion (10 per cent of global GDP) and 277 million jobs (1 in 11 jobs) for the global economy in 2014.

Recent years have seen travel and tourism growing at a faster rate than both the wider economy and other significant sectors such as automotive, financial services and health care.

According the report, 2014 was no exception. International tourist arrivals also surged, reaching nearly 1.14billion and visitor spending more than matched that growth. Visitors from emerging economies now represent a 46 per cent share of these international arrivals (up from 38 per cent in 2000), proving the growth and increased opportunities for travel from those in these new markets.

However, this growth in global tourism is not reflected in fortune of tourism in Nigeria. Today, tourism sector has been subsumed under the Ministry of Information and Culture. One way forward for tourism in Nigeria in 2016, according to the former president of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN) and proprietor of Brooklyn Group of Hotels, Alabo Mike Amachree was for the President Buhari-led government to take a second look at the decision and reverse it. This, he said, was in the light of the importance of tourism in any economy, more especially at this period that the price of oil has fallen and the country is exploring other sources of income.

He said: “I am not really bothered about pushing the Ministry to Information, but what I am saying is that tourism was not mentioned. They just pushed culture to merge with information and tourism is now under culture. Mind you, if you build an industry and you are producing products. If those products are not marketed, the industry will close down because they have to be marketed for people to patronize them.

“ If you say you only recognize culture, mind you, culture does not exist on its own. It can only be for entertainment. Cultural products can only be for entertainment. They are not capable of generating income without going through tourism.

“So, tourism is about the biggest provider of jobs in the country. Let me tell you, all the airlines, human transportation and movement of all kinds are under tourism. You can see the number of people those agents are employing, and in talking about foreign exchange earning, what else, maybe apart from petroleum, that can get foreign exchange more than tourism.

“ If we plan our tourism very well, people will be coming to Nigeria because of certain centres. Let us develop tourist sites, museums and other things that will attract the world to Nigeria, this is the work of tourism.”

On the impression that Tourism Ministry may not have done well in the last couple of years, he said: “That is not true. They don’t keep records of tourism. They don’t have records. Most government agencies don’t have records. We had government agency’s stand at the port in Lagos, Port Hacourt, Abuja and so on, but they were all removed. They no longer function.

“Government cannot push tourism to the background; let them find out why the ministry was unable to do those things. The departments under tourism should do their work that is what they are supposed to do. Why is it that other countries that have many products to showcase still sell their tourism?

“Gambia  sells more tourism than a lot of other African countries. Tourism is their main generator of income. If those you put in charge cannot do it, consult the practitioners, they will tell you what to do. You can’t just go and employ people. That is how it is. We know those who are good and can do the work.

“In those days, when I was young, during FESTAC 77, we saw a lot of inflow of tourism into Nigeria and with money, pay hotel bills and buy food from the market, not that government will be feeding them. They should bring their money to the country to spend. We stopped that.”

Amachree talked about how practitioners had clamoured for the ministry before it was created. He said: “When I came into tourism, tourism was buried under the Ministry of Trade and Industry. It was not mentioned, rather it was buried there. It was when General Abacha invited us to join vision 2010 that we deliberated on it. Among us were the late Chief Segun Olusola, Captain Okon, former Managing Director of ADC Airlines and myself. We were senior members of the committee.

“We deliberated that tourism should not be buried; let it come to the limelight, let it be brought out from the Ministry of Trade and Industry. We met Chief Shonekan. He was the chairman of the Vision 2010 committee. We told him that this was what we wanted; he said we should go and debate it, we did and we won. That was the beginning in bringing out the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.

“ Cultural products on their own cannot be marketed or generate employment. So, we call it the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Since then, things were going on well. Now tourism has been on the forefront, but in the current cabinet of President Buhari, tourism is no longer mentioned. They rather picked culture to add to Ministry of Information.

“ Tourism is not supposed to be under culture and information because tourism is the generator of revenue and employment in this country. Which other sector can generate employment and revenue like tourism. Tourism is the movement of people from one point to the other, and any money you make from the movement of people is tourism earnings. So, people move to all parts of the world and within Nigeria.

“ If you make money from the movement of people, you have created wealth and job. So, I am using this opportunity to call on the Federal Government to still bring out tourism and culture as one ministry. You cannot say it is under information. It is not supposed to be so.”

The Chariman, Board of Trustees of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), Chief Samuel Alabi, had this to say on the industry: “Going by the Supreme Court’s judgment, state tourism commissioners and the Minsiter of Information and Culture should have a working arrangement on how to move the industry forward.

“As it is now, some government agencies have not yet realized the new order of the day. The Nigerian Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOUR) is still basking in the euphoria of the old order of things. Tourism is a state affair.”

On the expectation of the private sector for the year, Alabi said: “A stable economy is sine qua non for the development of of the private sector. A few months ago, a dollar was exchanged for 200 plus, and now it is exchanged for 300.It does not help the private sector because it is going to harm planning. There is also the problem of unstable economic indices. Thirdly, tourism stakeholders are fond of talking in general terms, saying government should develop tourism without being specific.

“ There is need to develop tourism destinations. Our surest bet is to develop the wildlife and game reserves. Nigerians and foreigners will patronize these places, if developed because that is nature which may not be available in many other places in the world. South Africa, Namibia, Kenya and some other countries are making millions from safari. Nigerian government would earn foreign exchange, if our game reserves are developed and maintained.”

Efforts in the past to fashion out a direction for Nigerian tourism industry have not been successful. A tourism master-plan was drafted for the country but was never implemented before it was discarded. Practitioners are hoping that there will be a clearer direction in the government push to develop the tourism sector this year.

  • HACR hosts Calabar Hospitality Fiesta

    HACR hosts Calabar Hospitality Fiesta

THE Hoteliers’ Association of Cross River (HACR) recently hosted Calabar Hospitality Fiesta hosted in the city of Calabar.

It was a moment of celebration of its coming of age by the hoteliers, an occasion to showcase its beauty, create awareness about the tourism sector, opportunity for the hoteliers to interact and network and create activities to drive traffic to the city as well as serves as a prelude to the one month yearly Calabar Festival.

But more importantly as stated by the chairman of the association, Mr. Charles Ogar of Pyramid Hotel and Conference Centre, said the event was “another milestone in our quest to developing the tourism sector. It is a product we believe will create visibility and attract traffic to our businesses. A journey must start with a first. We have, as an association, started our journey into the future with this step tagged CALHOSFI.”

The hospitality fiesta was held in collaboration with Celebrity Planet 9ja, organisers of the Miss Hospitality Ambassador pageant and a host of other partners, including Multiple Choice. The theme of the celebration was ‘ain’t stopping us,’ and this was quite apt and instructive in many regards.

The celebration was kick started with cocktail and unveiling of brochure and pageant’s contestants at the Calabar Municipal Garden, a hunting ground for leisure in the city, which turned out to be the host of many of the events.

It was a colourful night with the hall draping in bright colours and exciting moments filled by members of the association and their visitors as well as fun seekers from across the city. The over 30 beautiful maidens who were adorned in blue T- shirts and jeans trousers added to the aesthetics of the day and the vivacious and convivial mood.

HACR’s chairman used the occasion to re-iterate the reasons behind the event and the benefits of it while urging everyone to take part in the week long feast, which in his words promised to be as entertaining and fulfilling as ever.

Other speakers of the night included the secretary of the association, Mrs. Justina Ovat, and the owner of Greenvalley Hotel and Calabar Municipal Garden, Eyo Ita, who is also a member of the association.

The second day witnessed a city walk/musical concert with members of the association gathered at Okoi Arikpo House, home to Cross River State Tourism Bureau (CRSTU), in a motorcades led by the beauty queens attired in blue T – shirts and bum shorts in Novaroster’s double deck tour bus riding through Marian to Calabar Municipal where they congregated for the music concert.
