  • Tourism Day to be celebrated Friday

World Tourism Day will be marked the world over on Friday, September 27. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community on the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. The event seeks to address the global challenges outlined in the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and highlight the tourism sector´s contribution in reaching these goals.

In support of the United Nations International Year of Water Cooperation, World Tourism Day (WTD) 2013 is being held under the theme, Tourism and Water: Protecting our Common Future.

This year’s theme highlights tourism’s role in water access and shines a spotlight on the actions currently being taken by the sector in order to contribute to a more sustainable water future, as well as the challenges ahead.

Official WTD celebrations will take place in the Maldives on September 27, but the UNWTO will be addressing the many links between tourism and water all year.

As a trillion dollar economic sector, tourism is a powerful force capable of tackling this challenge by offering effective solutions geared towards a more sustainable water future. With over one billion people travelling internationally each year, tourism can also be an important vehicle of raising awareness and changing behaviour.

According to the UNWTO, “as one of the largest economic sectors in the world, it is the responsibility of the tourism sector to take a leadership role and ensure companies and destinations invest in adequate water management throughout the value chain. If managed sustainably, tourism can bring benefits to the national and local communities and support water preservation,” said UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai in his official WTD 2013 message. “I urge all those involved in the tourism sector to join our global World Tourism Day campaign and continue to devise innovate solutions to ensuring sustainable access to water resources worldwide.”

Clean, accessible water is vital to tourism, running most of the sector´s businesses, from hotels and restaurants to leisure facilities and transportation. More importantly, wetland tourism is growing, with many of the world’s coastlines, lakes and other wetlands among the most popular tourism destinations.

World Tourism Day will be a unique opportunity to examine the challenges facing water management in tourism and the measures being undertaken by the sector to protect and promote water resources, while creating benefits for local populations around water tourism destinations.

Official WTD celebrations in the Maldives will include a high-level think tank, bringing together public and private tourism stakeholders and water experts to devise policies and strategies aimed at ensuring the tourism sector’s contribution to protecting water resources.

  • Governor Wada to resuscitate Confluence Beach Hotel

The Kogi State Governor, Captain Imuwa Wada, has promised to revive the moribund Confluence Beach Hotel, Kogi.

He made this promise during his speech at the opening ceremony of a workshop by the National Institute of Hospitality and Tourism (NIHOTOURS).

Governor was responding to a plea by the Director-General of the institute  Dr. Munzali Dantata, during his opening speech at the workshop of the institute held in Lokoja.

Dantata, while making his speech, called on the governor to resuscitate the hotel as the hotel had helped in the past to accommodate tourists on visit to the state.

Governor Wada promised to resuscitate the hotel within a year and promised the NIHOTOURS boss that this would be done in the next one year.

On the theme of the workshop which  was: “Nigeria at 100: Transforming the Tourism Industry for National Development”, Governor Wada said the celebration of the centenary by the nation should be exploited for economic benefit of the nation.

His words: “It is my belief that in the  celebration of our existence as a nation, we should explore and exploit every opportunity to venture into activities that will enhance the economic development of the state.

“The state committee on centenary celebration was, therefore, directed to organise such events and and activities that will expose the economic potential of our state and attract investment to Kogi.  We also invite or expect private sector partnership to promote friendly business environment”.

  • Ibis Hotel berths in Lagos

A few weeks ago, it was indeed a dream come true for Otunba Olufemi Okenla, a UK-based real estate lawyer.

Precisely on August 23, Okenla hosted the cream of top government players and big palyers in the private sector to the formal inauguration of a 165-room Ibis Hotel located in the Ikeja area of Lagos.

In an interview, Okenla said his initiative was borne out of the need to contribute his quota to the emerging mega city status of Lagos which, he noted, has witnessed massive infrastructural renewal under the Governor Babatunde Fashola-led administration.

Dismissing fears that the hospitality outfit is entering an already saturated market, Okenla said, “I don’t believe the sector is over saturated. Ibis does not have any competition because it’s a brand on its own. This hotel is what is called the business economy hotel. I can say categorically that at the moment, there is no other business economy hotel in Nigeria, except Ibis.

“The unique feature of a business economy hotel is that it does not have presidential suites or VIP suites. What you find is the same standard double room. We are simply catering mainly for businessmen who come to Lagos and want a nice and decent place to stay without missing anything available in any four-star hotel. This is our niche.”

Giving an overview of the hospitality sector, particularly the hotel sub-sector in Lagos, Okenla said: “There are a lot of mushroom hotels around. These are hotels you cannot stay. Locals can accept it, but for international standards, they are not just up to par. So, the demand is there for international brands not 20 or 30-room hotels.”

Okenla, who further disclosed that he was fascinated to enter into a frachise agreement with the Ibis Hotel brand after staying at the hotel in London during the 40th birthday party of his wife in 2006, added that his desire was reinforced after having a discussion with some friends which centred mainly on infrastructural deficit in Nigeria.

Built in a record time of three years and four months, Okenla disclosed that some of the unique features of the hotel, which was declared open by the Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Mrs. Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, includes boasting a facility where the heat generated by its air conditioning chiller system which produces the hot water needed by the hotel.

Okenla said with this in place, “the hotel is conserving energy and reducing the effect on the ozone layer.” Another notable feature of the hotel is its underground car park thereby, reducing the menace of traffic congestion which parking on the road by its guests would have caused.”

Speaking on the long term plans for the hotel, Okenla said: “Discussions are on and plans are underway to build nine more Ibis hotels in various already indentified locations in Nigeria within the next 15years.”

Okenla urged the state government to develop a “Land Bank” policy through which willing and credible investors can easily access land for commercial projects.

  • Rivers Shines at Notting Hill Carnival

Rivers Shines at Notting Hill Carnival

Arguably the most colourful and largest street festival in Europe, the annual Notting Hill Carnival which originated in 1964 as a platform for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate their own culture and traditions, again lit up the streets of London on August 26.

It was a headline event that made the city of London agog to the admiration of residents and tourists from across the world. The carnival, which is an amazing array of sounds, colourful sights and social solidarity, featured exceptional displays from people of diverse culture and nationalities, including numerous tourists from Nigeria.

In furtherance of the strategic positioning of the state as a preferred destination for business and leisure, Rivers State was again on parade at this year’s Notting Hill Carnival with eminent personalities, including top government officials and indigenes of the state adorning the rich costumes of Rivers people. The state cultural ambassadors were at the event under the auspices of the Rivers State Tourism Development Agency (RSTDA), the agency responsible for marketing the internationally acclaimed Port Harcourt Carnival (CARNIRIV) brand.

On duty to showcase the beauty and vibrancy of Rivers people were the state Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Nnabuihe Imegwu; Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mr. Gogo Levi Charles; Special Adviser to the Governor on Culture and Tourism, Mr. Iboroma Harry; Chairman, Okrika Local Government, Barrister Tamuno Williams; Chairman, RSTDA, Deacon Vincent Erinwa; Director – General, Dr. Sam Dede, and board members, including Chief John Yowika, Mr. Charles Awortu and Mr. Joseph Ewuse. There were also prominent Nollywood stars of the state origin.

During the carnival, the Rivers contingent was a cynosure of all eyes as they paraded the streets of London in exquisite costumes and colours that served the world a foretaste of what to experience at this year’s Port Harcourt Carnival, holding in December. Their costumes stood out and attracted the attention of many Nigerians in the Diaspora, Jamaicans, Brazilians and people of other nationalities.

While in London, the contingent was first hosted to a cultural reception at the prestigious African Centre in London. During the reception, they put the best of Rivers culture on display with a spectacular float and rich cultural display.

In a welcome address, Executive Director, Zmirage UK, Shabaka Thompson, said: “It is a privileged position for Rivers State to be part of the Notting Hill Carnival again this year, thereby becoming a prominent Nigerian state to make a distinctive cultural intrusion onto the world stage with the Notting Hill Carnival to showcase an authentic African cultural brand called CARNIRIV.”

Speaking further on the initiative, the former CEO of the Notting Hill Carnival said the move by Rivers State was both timely and strategic ‘‘because the CARNIRIV is bringing something unique to the world and also something authentically African and creative.’’ He described himself as “an adopted Port Harcourt boy’’, noting that following his invitation to the CARNIRIV in 2010, he was able to reconnect with his roots. He said the CARNIRIV is ‘‘one place you should be”.

Shabaka said CARNIRIV publicity campaign materials for this year were already on buses plying the streets of London saying, “last year, we had a large contingent of tourists who visited Rivers State to attend the CARNIRIV and this year, we hope to increase the number, considering the wider impact of the publicity campaign being driven in both the traditional media and the social media from here and Nigeria respectively”.

He further disclosed that Rivers State was the first Nigerian state to introduce the Afrobeat genre of music to the Notting Hill Carnival musical tradition as opposed to the calypso type of music the carnival had always run on.

‘‘This is a significant achievement, considering the warm embrace Afrobeat has received, therefore, drawing more attention to the music’s country of origin and the personality of the late Afrobeat legend, Fela Anikulapo’’,he said.

Dr. Imeagwu, while corroborating Shabaka, applauded the decision by his ministry and RSTDA to leverage the Notting Hill Carnival for the global marketing of the rich culture of Rivers people as well as reinforcing the strength of the black race.

“The essence of being here is to hedge deeper into the platform that has already been established by the Caribbeans and to exemplify what other African states ought to be doing to improve the perception of Africa and African culture. It is also aimed at emphasising the conviviality of our people and our values”, he stated.

Imeagwu added that this year’s edition of the CARNIRIV would be used to wrap up the celebration of the centenary anniversary of the city of Port Harcourt, saying: “I have been specifically asked by our governor, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, to invite you to be part of this epoch-making event. Please be assured that should you decide and plan to attend, the Rivers State Government will throw down the red carpet to receive you to experience Destination Rivers in a spectacular way.”

In her goodwill message at the event, Sally Sturgeon, Director of the People’s World Carnival, CARNIRIV’s partner troupe at the Notting Hill Carnival, said: “We are happy to be partnering the CARNIRIV, bringing a carnival of the people of Rivers State on the world stage. This is a fulfilment of our vision. We are indeed a people’s world carnival group and we are delighted at every opportunity to showcase cultural diversity to the world.”

  • Experiencing Destination Cross River

    Experiencing Destination Cross River

When the then Cross River State government radically decided to strike on a new trail far from the conventional track other state governments were following, many saw the effort as a little elitist far removed from reality.

The vision was complicated, yet simple. Even a blind man, on stepping on the soil of Cross River State feels the vibe of peace and relaxation. In many places, a huge amount of money is spent to create an artificially ambience whereby the people and their environment are at peace with nature. In Cross River, it is a natural phenomenon. The people, the landscape and vegetation create a kind of symphony that make visitors lower their guards and bask in the positive the state emits.

The tourism endowments in Cross River State are diverse and scattered all over the state. Some are more than a five-hour drive apart. But in between those that separate by distance are other spectacular sites and tourism products that leave a visitor’s jaw dropping.

Calabar was once the colonial capital of what is known as Nigeria today. It is a treasure trove for adventure tourists who want to enjoy an admixture of history, culture and eco-tourism. A few kilometres from Calabar is one of the most ambitious tourism projects in Africa, the Tinapa. It has not fully taken off, but it is a place worth visiting. A stay at the Lakeside Hotel within the Tinapa complex is an experience of its own. The hotel has a wonderful view of the creeks behind, of course, the leftover of the vast rainforest complex was carved out of.

The culinary experience in Lakeside is one that befits the status of Calabar as Nigeria’s capital of palate. A town where food preparation and service are an art. Other exciting places one could visit in Calabar include Marina and national museum.

Of course, the flagship product for tourism in Calabar is the annual one-month festival, the Carnival Calabar. Reputed to be Africa’s biggest street party, the distinct thing about the Carnival Calabar is that like every other carnival all over the world, there is boisterousness, colour, glitz and revelry. The difference is in the African costuming, dance steps and music, making it distinct from any other Carnival the world over. It normally takes place every December 27.

From Calabar to Obudu is about six hours by road. While the distance between Calabar is long, but to the knowledgeable, it an adventure as there are many important tourist sites scattered along the route.

The Agbokim Water Falls, up on a hill top and gushing down into deep valley with thick rainforest all around, it is idyllic and therapeutic.

In Obudu Mountain Resort, Cross River State comes close to literally having a heavenly paradise. As one drives up the mountain, the beauty unfolding is not something one could easily be captured in words. There are so many to capture: the undulating green hills that spread out as far as one’s eyes could go, the lush green vegetation, the surreal serpentine road that snakes up towards the mountain top. Obudu also has the longest cable car in Africa. Gliding on the cable car, one feels like flying on a magic box.

These are the products on offering in Cross River State, but it one thing to have an exciting destination and another having a tour management company in place to provide a seamless travel package for those desirous of having the experience of these exciting destinations. This is where a company, Remlords Group, in partnership with the hospitality and tourism facility owners in Cross River State last year, came up with an online travel portal: Experience Cross River.

It is an end-to-end travel portal that provides packages for local and international tourists wishing to visit Cross River. Through the Experience Cross River portal, individuals, couples, families or groups can choose comfortable tour packages. The Experience Cross River travel portal that was launched last year is gradually revolutionizing the Nigerian tourism industry and, most especially, it has made the tour of Cross River more rewarding and easy.

The Experience Cross River recently marked its first anniversary with a success story to tell. Mr. Nkereuwem Onung , the Managing Director of Remlords Group had this to say: “The online portal of Cross River State gives visitors tourism packages to come and experience the tourism assets of Cross River State. It is one year we began the journey. We like to thank God for what he has done so far. We will like to salute the governor of Cross River State, Senator Liyel Imoke, for courage and will to sustain the tempo of tourism activities in Cross River State. It is pertinent to thank the governor creating a friendly environment for public-private partnership for tourism to thrive in state.

“In just one year of the Experience Cross River, we have received over 2,000 visitors and hosted major conferences for both local and international organisations and groups through the portal because when you say you want to come to Cross River, how do we get there, who do you talk to? All you need is get to the portal and you are going to find packages, you are going to find whatever you want that enable you experience this great destination. But we are channelling our support for Cross River State Tourism as flagged off by His Excellency Governor Liyel Imoke.

“Today, the government has set up Cross River Tourism which is a medium where the government and the private sector interact to be able to move tourism in the state forward because the private sector people are the people who will drive tourism. Government only creates the enabling environment. Everywhere you find government doing anything about tourism, you can be sure it will never succeed.

“What we are doing today is to reaffirm our support for Cross River State Tourism as principal partners.”

The leader of hoteliers in Cross River State, Mr. Charles Ogar, talking about the impact of Experience Cross River to the destination, praised the Remlords Group for initiative.

He called on them to include more hotels in the list of hotels the portal is advertising on its platform, promising that they would work towards raising the standards of the hotels in the state.

The Managing Director of the Cross River State Tourism Bureau, Mr. Michael William, spoke on the positive outlook of tourism in the state and the contribution of the private sector: “When I came here six years ago in 2007, and I saw all that Cross River State had to offer, the immense potential that was here, I wanted to be a part of it. I also saw a government which was very particular about tourism, pushing to start the tourism and I wanted to see the private sector take up the challenge and move ahead.

“It was the single biggest gap that we had in Cross River. What I have been able to see manifest is how far the private sector has come of age.”

The publisher of the African Travel Quarterly (ATQ) and organizer of the annual West African travel fair, Mr. Ikechi Uko, also commended the group for the Experience Cross River as it has helped the industry in the area of data collection. Uko said the country’s tourism reception has grown, but many Nigerians are sceptical about this due to lack of data to back this claim in some cases.

He said with the initiative of Remlords Group, it is easy to measure the state’s tourism receipt as the figures given by Remlords are back by verifiable facts.

The Experience Cross River portal has shown how serious the business of tourism is in the state. It would help in growing the local market. It shows factually that the efforts that the state government is putting towards growing the tourism industry is bearing fruits.

With the budgeoning industry, the Federal Government owes it as a duty to help the industry grow by providing the necessary infrastructural facilities. The first is road. The Calabar-Obudu Road is one of the biggest hindrance to Obudu Mountain Resort achieving its full potential.
