  • 2018 Carnival Calabar Ayade preaches Africanism

Destination Cross River’s festival month is in full swing. As a build-up to the state’s annual flagship tourism event, Carnival Calabar, the second carnival dry run will take place in Calabar tomorrow. The Carnival Commission said the dry runs are aimed to finetune the preparation  towards having a world-class carnival showpiece in the state capital later this month on Monday, December 28.  The theme for this year’s edition of the carnival is Africanism.

Speaking on the theme for the year, the Special Adviser of the Cross River Sate Governor of Event Management, Mr. Ken Aklah, said the government wants to use the festival this year to unite Africa and that was the thinking behind the theme of Africanism.

He spoke further: “The government, as it is today, our major interest is truly how we could grow Carnival Calabar further.  We believe strongly that to be able to have a world brand like we already have, which is engaging people to come to Calabar, we continually thrive to be able to grow in terms of value, trying to do value addition  to the properties of Carnival Calabar. That is why year in year out, we introduce new thinking to see that we don’t create monotony.  For everything, once it becomes monotonous, people get fed up with it. Everybody would run away. That is why we created the international carnival; the bikers’ parade; the Miss Africa pageant, all that came within these four years that we came on board.

“We decided that this year, instead of growing new event, because this is an election year for us, we should be able to sustain and make the products that we have created, better than how we started. So, we are going to sustain what we have created this year and make it better.

“But above all, more challenging theme for us this year is the theme of Africanism.   The drive here is to see how we can use the festival and the carnival as a uniting force for the African continent. The governor thinks strongly it is doable, he thinks that for everything, it begins with a drop.”

In the same vein, Mr. Agwei Emmanuel, Principal Partner, Promotional innovation Synergy Limited, consultants to the carnival said part of the innovation was to see how to add value to the festival and make it attractive to top corporate organizations.  He also said his organization aims to generate more revenue for the carnival by looking at different aspects of the carnival and make it attractive.

He said: “We feel that we should look at other components that can be revenue generators. One of such is the Festival Village. The festival village is such that we have been able to recreate the wooden stall into the 21st century prefabs. These are stalls that would be able to attract bigger brands into Calabar to deal with the socio-economic fibre of the state by making sure that the common man on the street benefits from the Carnival Calabar. That will equally increase the reach in terms of making sure that various brands that would have been aggressively spoken to, or will meet some level of aggression from us, would definitely come to us without us going to them.”

Agwei said the strategy they were putting in place was in line with Governor Ayade’s vision to make sure that the state is industrialized. He said his organization rode on that to attract one of the energy companies in Africa to provide two megawatts for the Festival Village for this year.

He spoke further: “We are making sure that Carnival Calabar for this year is clean, green and safe, running on solar panel renewable energy. We are looking at a wholistic approach that will change the socio-economic fibre of Cross River States. In doing this, we can’t but do it in partnership with the Cross River State government. This is an opportunity for us to make sure that we deliver on the idea behind this project in other perspective, beyond this, and outside the scope of what the tourism industry stands to benefit

The State Government believes that the platform has and will continue to engender economic development, empowerment of the people and promote tourism. The President of the Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN), Alhaji Saleh Rabo, has  called on both the federal and state governments to come up with a national policy on cultural tourism to make Nigeria a leading African tourist destination.

Rabo made this call while giving the opening address during the recently held Nigeria Tourism Investors Forum and Exhibition (NTIFE).

Alhaji Rabo said: “FTAN calls on the federal government, through the Ministry of Information and Culture, to come up with a Nigerian national policy on cultural tourism. Many domestic and international tourism experts have long concluded that cultural tourism is Nigeria’s most competitive tourist product, if only it will be well harnessed.”

He said apart from Nollywood, Nigeria’s performing arts and fashion have been making waves all over the world. He added that “culture is our God-given tourism comparative advantage. So, government should work with the tourism private sector to reposition Nigeria as the most remarkable destination to see and enjoy true African heritage.”

The Nigeria Tourism Investors Forum and Exhibition (NTIFE) is a flagship event started by FTAN in 2013 to serve as a tourism development advocacy event. This year’s  theme of the two-day NTIFE event is: “Infrastructure and Security: Catalysts for Sustainable Tourism Development”.

In his speech, Alhaji Rabo remarked that FTAN appreciates recent investments by the previous and present federal governments in rail transportation, particularly, the commissioning of the Abuja to Kaduna rail line and the Abuja city light rail – connecting the airport to Abuja city centre – are noteworthy infrastructural investments.

He said: “We hereby plead that major tourist destinations and towns at each geopolitical zones should be made the rail terminals along the newly built rail transport infrastructure. It is incontrovertible that rail transport is one of the best ways for tourists to see a destination’s picturesque countryside and meet directly with locals in rural communities.”

He further called on the federal and state governments to map out tourism development zones (TDZs) across states in Nigeria. Saying that such tourism development zones should consequently be enriched with requite tourist destination facilities using a public-private partnership, including the facilitation of land acquisition by tourism investors.

He advised that “the tourism development zones (TDZ) should be mapped out based on a state’s actual and potential tourist attractions.”

Other dignitaries that spoke at the Nigeria Tourism Investors Forum and Exhibition (NTIFE) were Minister of Information and Culture, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Deaconness Grace Gekpe; the Director of State Security Services (SSS) represented by Mr. Emmanuel Nnaemeka; Otunba Segun Runsewe, the Director General of the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC).

And on November 22, the second and final day of NTIFE 2018, the Comptroller General of Nigeria Immigration Service gave the keynote address with a paper titled “Encouraging Tourism in Nigeria: Role of Nigeria Immigration Service.” The Comptroller General was represented by Mrs. Wuraola Adepoju, a senior officer with the Immigration Service.

Mrs. Adepoju explained all the services provided by the Nigeria Immigration Service, including Nigeria’s new Visa-On-Arrival (VOA) policy. She explained that the VOA is available to inbound Nigerian travellers from all parts of the world and that all applications for the facility are responded to within 48 hours from the first date of application.

She told FTAN members to cooperate more with the Nigeria Immigration Service to attract more tourists to Nigeria.

NTIFE 2018 ended with an Abuja city tour facilitated by the Nigeria Tourism Development Corporation (NTDC). The group’s tour took the event participants to tourist sites and attractions around Abuja, including the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, the Three Arms Zone, Aso Rock, National Children Parks and Zoo.

  • INAC Expo: 27 countries, others showcase culture

27 countries and states  were  in Abuja to display  their culture,  arts and crafts at the 11th edition of International Arts and Crafts (INAC) Expo.

Among the participating countries were China, Hungary, Gambia, Trinidad and Tobago, Bangladesh, Chad, India, Iran, Burkina Faso, Pakistan, Sudan and many other countries.

The impressive event was also an opportunity for many unemployed Nigerians to acquire free vocational training in arts and craft. The event  was declared open by the publisher of the Abuja-based Leadership newspapers, Mr. Sam Ndah-Isaiah. Also present at the opening ceremony were the Minister of Women Affairs, Hajia Aisha Abubakar; the Information and Culture Minister, Alhaji  Lai Mohammed, represented by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Grace Gekpe; and a representative of the Emir of Zazzau, Alhaji Shehu Idris.

Delivering a paper titled: Networking for Arts and Crafts to the World: Prospects and Challenges, the Chief Executive Officer of Le Look Nigeria Limited, Mrs. Chinwe Ezenwa,  called on Nigerians to embrace the nation’s art and craft industry as a commercial venture.

She said African art and craft industry is currently enjoying huge international acceptability and has the prospects of not only alleviating poverty, but also creating jobs. Ezenwa said  at the time she started the production of Afrocentric crafts as beauty items, European designers were the order of the day in Nigeria. But this has changed with the current huge demand for African crafts.

Her words: “At the time we started, the prospects were not there then, as our products were competing against famous and infamous international labels. Our women    and men were preoccupied in wearing European and Western outfits. Over time, as we approached a new millennium, things began to change. Afrobeat through Fela, Ebenezer Obey, King Sunny Ade and other famous musicians started making waves outside the Nigerian shores.

“We, on our part, invested in research to understand how and what was accepted internationally. We embraced training; we attended fairs locally and internationally. We became visible and could no longer be ignored by our own Nigerians as the Made in Nigeria campaign became the order of the day.

“Then came the boom-Made in Nigeria, Made in Africa, the ankara revolution that we had already keyed into a long time ago and waited for the opportunity.”

Ezenwa said Nigeria has never had the opportunity that it is having currently to expand its arts and craft to all parts of the world.

In his welcome address, the Director- General of the National Council of Arts and Culture (NCAC), Otunba Segun Runsewe, said even though the arts of craft expo  was in its 11th edition, he saw the need to drastically improve on the expo by not limiting it to the just Africa.

He said:“This flagship programme of the NCAC was conceived in 2008 as a platform for craft men and women all over Africa and beyond to make contact, interact, showcase their arts and crafts products , exchange ideas and skills, network for investment partners.

“I am delighted to note that this exposition has lived up to the expectation of bringing about regional integration, continental unity as well as unveiling the economic opportunities in the arts and crafts sector.”

Runsewe said the decision to change the expo’s name from African Festival of Arts and Culture (AFAC) Expo to International Arts and Crafts (INAC) Expo was taken last year in view of the growing popularity and the need to reflect the global relevance and outlook of the programme. He said having consolidated itself as at the regional level, it became imperative to launch into the global arena so that Nigerian craft men could network with the world.

Speaking on the expo and their participation, the head  of the Bangladesh  from their country’s embassy in  Nigeria, Mr. Yamin Khan, said:  “The main aim of our participation is that we don’t want to stagnate in a certain place. We want to expand our traditional craft. We want to expand our traditional craft to everywhere.”

Asked if he was satisfied with the organization and level of participation at the expo, he said: “Of course, there are many booths here. We can share with each other. It is through this kind of programme that we can share with each other.  What we are having, they can pick from us and what we are not having, we can pick from them.  This is the way to go. This is the way to show your craft and your products. This way, it will help you to expand your business all over the world.”

Some of the participating countries took time out to celebrate their day and showcase their culture. Among these countries was the People’s Republic of China which put up a beautiful show to the admiration and satisfaction of visitors and participants.
