    Serubawon: Three years after

    By Oladapo Sofowora

As many supporters would have loved to celebrate the life and times of Senator Isiaka Adeleke also known as ‘Serubawon’, his close relative is yet to recover from the death of the astute politician and philanthropist.

Of all his, most cherished ambitions, governing Osun State once again was one of the unfulfilled dreams of the first executive Governor of Osun state, who died on April 23, 2017, at 62.

Although he might have gone to rest, his legacies can never be forgotten in a hurry in Osun state. Even as a Senator, he represented the interest of his constituents with his heart.

Last Thursday, marking his 3rd remembrance, many of his supporters were prevented from gathering at his burial cenotaph to once again pray for the deceased and show their unflinching loyalty even though he is no more.

Sources said; “If not for the restriction from the Coronavirus outbreak, a mammoth crowd would have trooped into his country home in Ede, Osun state to pay their respect to the seasoned politician. Several Mosques would have organised a program in his memory most especially during this fasting period. If he was alive, he would have donated heavily to the needy in times like this. To avoid top many contacts by maintaining social distancing, only his immediate family members and few close relatives we present at his remembrance gathering.”

    ‘The Bull’ @ 67

    By Oladapo Sofowora

On Wednesday, April 29, Nigerian business tycoon and one of the richest black men in the world, Dr. Mike Adeniyi Agbolade Ishola Adenuga, turned 67 with no fanfare and drums rolling in celebration mood. In as much as the Ijebu-Igbo, Ogun state born business tycoon values the gift of life, he would have loved to host his close friends and family.

He would have opened the bar for the ceaseless flow of his favourite ‘Kir Royale’ French cocktail laced with crème de cassis topped mixed with champagne or white wine. Instead, he sang praises and showed appreciation to his creator via prayer. It would be unfair for the Forbes rated billionaire to ignore the current pandemic currently ravaging the world. To further show his solidarity and support in fighting the deadly COVID-19 virus to a standstill, he donated a whopping 1.5Billion Naira to the Federal Government.

For those who had followed his story with keen interest, they would attest to the fact that during his formative years, he has displayed traits of a man destined for greatness. Although he had a very quiet and modest upbringing, Adenuga unlearned, relearn, and also rebuilt himself to attain the greatness he is destined for.

He is one of the very few billionaires in the country who allows the less privileged. He is a man who values his humble beginning. He has adhered strictly to the teaching of his parents, following the popular axiom: “Never burn your bridges, you may need to cross them again”.

Adenuga started early in life, knowing fully well that; life is not a bed of roses. From this, he coined one of his favourites quotes; ‘The harder your work, the luckier you get’.

He struggled, worked hard and smart before providence granted him his heart desires by making him a young millionaire at age 26, with a source of wealth traced to selling lace fabrics and supply of drinks and provisions before delving into banking, energy, telecommunication, oil exploration, aviation, construction, and real estate.

Although he is hardly seen attending public functions or soiree, his presence is felt like a raging storm. A close source revealed that “Dr. Adenuga is a man who values time and loves privacy. He minds his business and has no extra time for frivolities.”

    Shipping magnate Afolabi’s birthday wish

    By Oladapo Sofowora

Mr. Taiwo Afolabi’s name is not new on the social radar. Most especially, on the shipping business in Nigeria. He is one of Nigeria’s most successful shipping magnates in the country. He didn’t just attain that position by chance but with luck, dedication, hard work, and prayers. Afolabi was able to climb the ladder of success within a short while.

Apart from the shipping business, the SIFAX boss has his hands on many pies, which include oil and gas, real estate, agriculture, among others. Afolabi is not just a billionaire, he is also blessed with a kind heart. He sees wealth as God-given and he is always at will to help the needy.

On April 29, the highly enterprising, hardworking, and technically endowed business mogul added another year to his age and celebrated his 58th birthday on a lowkey. For Afolabi, birthdays are moments to reflect redolent memories. It’s a moment to count your days and also give thanks to the creator most especially at a time when the high and mighty are being taken by grim reapers.

At a point, Afolabi was faced with Nigeria’s dwindling business climate which comes with a heavy typhoon and tsunami. Like a consistent and skilled businessman, he was able to weather the storm, navigating through the waters.

Consequently, he was one of the few businessmen who was issued a license to build a refinery in Nigeria. He was said to have secured several hectares of land around Snake Island, Lagos to build a refinery that is expected to produce at least, 120, 000 barrels per day.

A source also told Society Rendezvous that his hospitality outfit seems to be his headache at the moment. Afolabi’s much-talked-about hospitality outfit is a seven-story, 251 rooms state-of-the-art edifice named Marriott Hotel. Situated on 7,000 Square meters landmass inside Oba Akinjobi, GRA, Ikeja, Lagos, the yet-to-be-completed hospitality outfit is currently one of his headaches in business.

“He is a man who has never failed in any of his endeavours, he has vowed to make this dream come true no matter how difficult the task ahead is. All his abandoned projects as we speak are currently receiving life. Immediately after the pandemic, work would begin with full force. He is working for the completion before his next birthday.

He is working assiduously to achieve that projection,” a source told Society Rendezvous.

Also on April 27th, he marked his 10th coronation anniversary as the paramount ruler of Ikate land. For such a wonderful feat, many had thought the king would have called praise singers to sing his praise to high heavens and as well roll out drums to create a bubbling atmosphere but the king celebrated with no official gathering.

A source said; “If not for the COVID-19 virus, many of his admirers would have celebrated him in grand style with a loud celebration. They would have slaughtered several cows and involved the best of caterers to prepare high-cost meals followed with an endless supply of a choice of drinks. Oba Elegushi will not because of his interest put the lives of those who will celebrate him at risk. He chooses to have any celebration after the whole pandemic is over.”

  • Sober reflection for Orji Uzor Kalu at 60

Sober reflection for Orji Uzor Kalu at 60

    By Oladapo Sofowora

During his prime days as Governor of Abia State, the Senator representing Abia North at the upper chamber of the National Assembly, Orji Uzor Kalu, is a toast of many politicians in Nigeria, most especially, within the south-east region. He made a feat by not just becoming the youngest governor in Nigeria at age 39 but going on to serve two terms between 1999-2007.

Years ago, if a soothsayer had told him that he would be in jail to celebrate his 60th birthday, the astute politician would have debunked the vision vehemently. He would believe that he is a strong politician with a powerful pedigree.

His affiliations with the ruling All Progressive Congress party leadership and his filial relationship with President Buhari are evidence for his reasons not to believe.

With all these factors, he could not escape the wrath of the law. Kalu was convicted by the Lagos Division of the Federal High Court on Thursday, December 5, 2019, and sentenced to 12 years in prison for defrauding Abia State using his Slok Holding to divert N7.65 billion.

On Tuesday, April 21, the astute politician and Chairman of Slok Holdings sauntered into the league of sexagenerian amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Observers had thought favour seekers and political associates would have remembered him by showering encomium for reaching such a milestone on earth.

Alas, he was forgotten in a hurry as nobody placed an advertorial to celebrate him apart from his immediate family.

If he was not in prison, newspaper advertorials and wishes would have been flying around the media space. Many cows would have been slaughtered with choice wines flowing ceaselessly, friends and political associates would have been lodged at 5-star hotels.

His constituents would have flooded his country home at Igbere, Abia State to celebrate with him. His friends would have opted to throw a high-octane 60th birthday soiree for him in Lagos, Abuja, London, New York, and Dubai. To his chagrin, he has been deserted by favour seekers, some friends, and even associates.

A close source divulged that Orji Kalu is currently learning the hard way. By the time he serves his jail term, he would decipher his true friends from his enemies. Many observers are of the opinion that a good and kind-hearted man like Kalu deserves to be celebrated even in trying times.

  • Zinox boss Stan Ekeh’s quiet donation

Zinox boss Stan Ekeh’s quiet donation

    By Oladapo Sofowora

One of the few businessmen in the country who have had their names crested on gold, is Leo Stan Ekeh, the Chairman, Zinox Group. Not only known for business excellence, but reaching out to those around him with love has also made him an angel in human form.

He has scored many firsts in the past and he still continues in that trend, in fact, he is born a leader. Naturally, he has been placed far above his contemporaries and competitors. Like a man who sees the future, Ekeh is a man with great foresight. A rare feature that has helped him grow in everything he had ventured into.

Undoubtedly, today the Imo State-born billionaire is one personality whose love for fellow human beings is second to none. This is because he gives out freely without attaching undue attention.

It was gathered that in a bid to ameliorate the impact of the lockdown occasioned by the ravaging COVID-19 pandemic in most states in Nigeria, the Zinox Group, through its ingenious initiative has been committed to feeding over 7000 Nigerian families for two weeks through its staff spread across the various states in Nigeria.

To this end, the management of the Zinox Group which includes concerns such as Zinox Technologies Ltd; TD Africa; Task Systems Ltd; TD Plus; TDiLife, among others; as well as the Konga Group – with its growing subsidiaries such as Konga Travel; KongaPay; and Kxpress, among others – has decided to use its staff across all its network of branches to disperse the food across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria to reach the under-reached and under-served populations.

The initiative, a brain-child of the Group Chairman, was borne out of the lockdown hardship and suffering he witnessed during his personal visitations to various rural locations and suburbs around town; after donations to Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), some churches and states.

Consequently, the Zinox Group has set up a special palliative fund running into millions of Naira from which all employees across Nigeria will have their accounts credited. Every full-time staff in each of the respective companies in the Zinox Group and Konga – from the security man to members of Executive Management – is expected to use the funds received to adopt a minimum of three families; which it will support with essential food items to last them through the next two weeks.

Junior staff in all the companies across Nigeria are expected to nominate and donate the Zinox Group’s special palliatives to at least three needy families around their vicinity while mid-level executives are expected to reach at least five families each, and members of Executive Management will be expected to donate to at least seven families within their locality.

He is one of the few trado-medical practitioners who has re-invented the trado-medical system of healing by infusing some modern touches using capsules to package trado-medicine and distributing it around the world

At a point, many thought he was out of business. His admirers are of the opinion that he had recoiled back into his cocoon after reducing his presence on the media space alongside his company’s 48 branches across Nigeria to 7.

A source divulged that; “To be candid, Dr. Ayeni is doing fine in business. Before now, he was formerly into trado-medical consultation across Nigeria before fully delving into the manufacturing of drugs with a big factory in Ogun State. This made him keep a low profile while many thought he went off the social radar.”

Since the breaking of the deadly COVID-19 virus in Nigeria, the Pathfinder Hotel boss has been charged with the duty of finding a lasting trado-medical cure to the deadly virus. He and his team went into research in partnership with the Arole Oodua, Ooni of Ife, HIM Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi.

Apart from his social media engagements online and offline, his Moreklue foundation aimed at sponsoring the education of vulnerable kids and Morklue master class and vocational training aimed at equipping youths to discover their innate potentials, Demola seems to be deviating from the norm lately.

He has been dropping an unclear signal on his social media pages via his engagements and those he hangs out with. He is constantly beginning to be in the faces of people as his lifestyle has changed drastically.

For those who have had close contact with the Oyo state born entrepreneur, they will attest to the fact that he is a social and enterprising chap. His move lately has got several people guessing on his plans for the future. People are of the opinion that he might be seeking an elective position soon.

A source close to the Economics graduate from Osun State University told Society Rendezvous that it seems he is tilting towards aiming for a political appointment or vying for a political post in his Oyo state hometown.

“With his ATA movement, his constant contact with Hon. Shina Peller, Otunba Rotimi Ajanaku, Kola Kareem, and a host of other seasoned politicians, it seems he is going under tutelage on how to be a politician with a difference.

He has been reading lots of books on governance lately. What has, however, remained a mystery is an office he is seeking election for in Oyo state.
