IEF demanded the inquiry in a statement issued in Lagos, Friday, jointly signed by its Secretary, Mr. Efiye Bribena; Moderator, Ijaw Nation Forum, Mr. Ben Amaebi Okoro; BOT Chairman, Embasara Foundation; Chief Amagbe D. The group urged Diri to, among other things, “institute a competent public inquiry to unravel the whole truth on the matter and make public its findings and recommendations, take any other appropriate legal action, including sanctions where deserving, and appoint a competent Board and management for the Bayelsa State Oil Company Limited (BOCL) that can effectively drive its operations and in particular pursue the recovery of this prized public assets.”

The group noted that both the conventional and social media platforms had been inundated by allegations and counter-allegations of a scheme by some highly placed indigenes of Bayelsa State in public service to dispossess the state and its people its prime assets, the Atala Oil Fields located in OML-46, under suspicious circumstances for their personal gains.

It, therefore, called on Governor Douye Diri to urgently make a definitive statement on the true state of affairs and the prospects of recovering the valuable assets for the overall interest of the people.

He noted that the illegal structures under high tension cables and in other unauthorised places across Edo state would first be demolished.

He said: “Edo State government has observed that some illegal developers and squatters have continued the unwholesome practice of engaging in street trading and other associated activities in unsuitable locations, such as under the Transmission Company of Nigeria’s (TCN’s) high tension lines, particularly at Trinity Way, Abuja Quarters, Benin.

“Edo government strongly condemns the violation of the state’s extant town planning laws and regulations, especially as the quarters had previously been issued violation/removal notices, which have since expired.

“Members of the public and such quarters are hereby informed that officials of Edo Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development will immediately commence the demolition of the illegal structures, following the expiration of the notices earlier served to such developers.

“For the avoidance of doubt, developers and squatters who fail to relocate, vacate or comply with the notices will be visited with the full sanctions of the laws, including removal of such illegal structures and recovering from the errant persons, the cost of carrying out the demolition.”

Obaseki had earlier assured that he would continue to place emphasis on the protection of lives and property of Edo residents, while declaring that there would not be sacred cows in his administration’s decision to ensure order and respect for the government’s pro-people policies.

  • ‘Obiano’s successor I’ll emerge through votes not force’

‘Obiano’s successor I’ll emerge through votes not force’

    By Emma Elekwa, Onitsha

National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Mr. Ralph Okey-Nwosu, has stated that the next governor of Anambra State will be voted into the office and not forced on the people of the state.

He also alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra State had been coercing politicians in the state to join the party.

He alleged that the party was taking advantage of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to bully politicians into joining the ruling party.

Addressing newsmen on Friday in Awka, Nwosu maintained that no amount of intimidation would give APC victory at the election, stressing that the next governor of the state would emerge by votes and not by force.

He urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to allow the anti-graft agency and other bodies to destroy his legacies and diminish nation’s democracy.

He said: “Recently, APC leaders have been bullying all opposition parties to defect to APC or face EFCC. Many in APGA and PDP have succumbed, and we hear that a lot more will be blackmailed to follow suit.

“This APC by force syndrome can’t stand in Anambra. I can assure and all the

shenanigans will come to nothing. The people of Anambra state will resist it and will vote to produce the next governor.

“As a statesman who is concerned to ensure EFCC and other govt agencies become more reasonable and learn to focus on the job they’re meant to do, I urge them to stay away from politicians and politics.’’

Anambra guber: YPP opposes electoral materials storage in Imo

    Our Reporter

The Young Progressives Party (YPP) has rejected purported plans by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to store election materials for the November 6 Anambra governorship election in Imo State.

YPP’s National Publicity Secretary Mr. Egbeola Martins made this known in a statement yesterday in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that INEC said it would use the commission’s zonal headquarters office in Owerri, the Imo State capital, to distribute non-sensitive materials for the Anambra governorship election.

INEC Chairman Prof. Mahmood Yakubu disclosed this during the commission’s quarterly meeting with media executives in Abuja, on Wednesday.

He said the decision was a result of the recent vandalism and attacks on the commission’s facilities in Anambra.

Martins described the planned storage of materials as ill-conceived and an illogical proposition capable of overheating the polity, considering the suspicion existing among political parties.

According to him, as shown in the unprecedented numbers of pre-election litigations, it will be unwise for INEC to become the agent of destabilisation, stirring needless and avoidable controversies.

“Our inability to have risen above petty considerations as a nation has made perception to be everything in this part of the world.

“It will be foolhardy for anyone, including INEC, to think that keeping electoral materials, whether sensitive or non-sensitive in an APC controlled state of Imo is right.

“We call upon INEC to rescind every plan to store election materials in Imo, as events have shown that it is not better than Anambra or any other state within the region,” he said.

Martins said if proximity was one of the considerations for the storage of the election materials in Imo, Delta and Enugu states ranked as better alternatives for proximity sake.

He said the call for the logistical rejigging should not be a Herculean task, as anything contrary might suggest that INEC would be compromised.

The YPP national publicity secretary advised the electoral body to manage the cooperation and vote of confidence it enjoyed from stakeholders.

“Any attempt to go on with this plan against the popular demand of Nigerians, especially the good people of Anambra, will be resisted,” he said.

Martins called for timely intervention of civil society organisations and international community, in the early stage of electoral activities in Anambra.

  • Amnesty boss has surpassed our expectations, says IYC

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to make the interim Administrator, Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), Col. Milland Dikio (rtd), the substantive coordinator.

The umbrella Ijaw youth body said Dikio had surpassed the expectations of youths and other stakeholders in the Niger Delta.

The IYC in a statement on Thursday by its spokesperson, Ebilade Ekerefe, hailed Dikio for his engagements with stakeholders in the region, saying it was a departure from previous administrations.

He said: “For us, Col. Dikio (rtd) has gone beyond the expectations of many, especially considering those who have manned that office in recent times. He has stabilised the programme and many stakeholders are pleased with his strategies.

“Dikio has redirected the amnesty programme. The programme has a template and its previous coordinators did not really pursue the template.

“However, since Dikio took over the leadership, he has pursued the programme in a direction that is pleasing to the stakeholders in the region, especially as he engages with them.”

Ekerefe said Dikio’s engagements led to peace and stability in the region, noting that the amnesty boss would not allow any month to pass without visiting Niger Delta to interface with stakeholders.

He appealed to President Buhari to honour the wish of stakeholders in the region by giving a substantive status to Dikio’s appointment.

Ekerefe said making Dikio the substantive coordinator would enable him to pursue the mandate of PAP to a logical conclusion, to ensure peace in the region.

He said: “While we congratulate Dikio on a successful year in office as the PAP boss, we believe that upon his confirmation as the coordinator, he will perform effectively.

“Dikio has the capacity and intellect as he has demonstrated so far. He has carried the people of the region along. We implore the Federal Government to make him the substantive coordinator so that he will have the full operational capacity to administer justice to the programme. We are not comfortable that the amnesty programme is run through an interim basis.”

The IYC spokesman urged the PAP boss to remain focused on his good work and not to be worried by the activities of mischief makers.

“Our message to him is not to be deterred. He should be focused. We know that the office is associated with distractions, so he should not be distracted. He should inform stakeholders about his policy direction so that everybody will be carried along in the process,” he said.

  • PDP members sue Cross River Speaker, others over entitlements

    By Nsa Gill, Calabar

Seven members of the Cross River State House of Assembly, who are still in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have sued the Speaker, Eteng William and 17 others, demanding payment of their entitlements. They alleged that the entitlements have been denied them for months since they refused to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC) with others, who followed Governor Ben Ayade.

The suit came up for hearing at the Vacation Court, Moore Road, Calabar, on Tuesday.

The Nation gathered that the matter was adjourned till September 14, following a preliminary objection by the APC members.

The PDP members accused the Speaker and principal officers of sharing allowances accruing to the PDP members among themselves, as a punishment for refusing to defect to the APC.

A PDP member in the legislature, Efa Esua, representing Calabar Municipality, confirmed the suit and noted that the preliminary objection from the defendants caused the adjournment because it was served on the plaintiffs.

Efforts to speak with the Speaker over the matter were unsuccessful, as his lines could not connect. However, his Chief Press Secretary, Hope Obeten, said William would not discuss the matter since it was in court.

We will counter threat to Anambra election, says NSA

    Our Reporter

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno, has said that the Federal Government would counter threat to the conduct of the November 6 Anambra governorship election through deployment of security operatives.

Monguno, who spoke yesterday at the third quarterly meeting of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), said the Federal Government would not abdicate its responsibility of securing lives and property.

He said: “With the prevalence of security threats occasioned by dissident separatist groups in the South, who are bent on scuttling the efforts of the government in achieving national cohesion and undermining the democratic processes in the country, the Federal Government will not tolerate any group or persons planning to impede smooth conduct of elections.

“While acknowledging the rights of citizens to express their grievances within the ambit of the law, it is also important to state that the Federal Government will not abdicate its responsibility of securing lives and property as well as securing the environment for the citizens to pursue their means of livelihood.

“In furtherance of the coordinating mandate of the NSA, we are poised to ensure robust deployment before, during and after the election, to counter threats and ensure peaceful conduct of the poll, especially the coming off-cycle Anambra governorship election.”

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, praised security agencies and members of ICCES for supporting elections and electoral processes in Nigeria.

He said the commission has made arrangement to replace lost movable materials during the attack on its office in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Yakubu said: “As you are aware, our state office in Awka was attacked, resulting in damage to the building and the destruction of items and facilities for the election, including ballot boxes, voting cubicles, vehicles, generators and non-sensitive materials.

“I am glad to report that we have made arrangement to replace lost movable materials. We are making efforts to rebuild the physical facilities, which will be completed before the election.”

He added: “You may recall that we had an emergency meeting on May 27 in the wake of attacks on our facilities across the country. This was followed by our regular quarterly meeting on June 21 during which we discussed the commission’s plan to resume the nationwide Continuous Voter Registration (CVR). I am glad that the attacks on our facilities have subsided and the CVR is in its 11th week. Over two million Nigerians have registered online.”

“I want to express the commission’s appreciation to the security agencies and members of ICCES for your continued support to elections and the electoral process in Nigeria. This year alone, the commission has conducted eight by-elections made up of four federal constituencies, three state constituencies and one councillorship constituency in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The last by-election was held about four weeks ago in Kaduna State.

“The next by-election will be held in Delta State. We look forward to the support of the security agencies to ensure that we deliver yet another credible election for Isoko South I State Assembly Constituency this weekend.

“For voter accreditation during the Anambra governorship election, the commission intends to introduce a new technology called the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which has the capability for fingerprint and facial biometric accreditation. Over the last three days, we have explained and demonstrated how the new device will work during our consultative meetings with political parties, civil society organisations and the media.
