Abiodun seeks Chinese partnership in mineral resources exploration

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has called for a partnership with Chinese investors to explore the numerous mineral resources that abound in the state.

Governor Abiodun made the call yesterday when he received the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Yu Dunhai, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

He said the state is blessed with abundant natural resources, making it the largest contributor in the non-oil sector of the nation’s economy, hence the need for the state to partner with Chinese investors for more coordinated exploration.

He said: “Ogun State is blessed with a lot of mineral resources; we have gold, clay, bitumen, limestone, kaolin, glass sand, granite, among others.

“Ogun State is number one in cassava, eggs, poultry and fish production. Our land is fertile for the cultivation of cocoa, rubber, and cashew. We are the number one producer of cement in Nigeria and the third in Africa behind Egypt and Morocco.

“We have huge human resource potential because we are the education capital of this nation. We have more educational institutions than any other state.

“We look forward to partnering with Chinese investors in the area of exploring our natural resources because some of your people have connived with the locals to explore our mineral resources illegally without paying attention to the environment.”

Governor Abiodun, who acknowledged the exploits of Chinese investors in the global economy, noted that his administration, since inception, has focused on how to attract more investors by creating an enabling environment and promoting the idea of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) to galvanize the State’s economy.

His administration, the governor noted, has created agencies aimed at making business seamless by eliminating bottlenecks and putting in place a multimodal transport system that connects air, rail, and road transport together.

Abiodun noted that his administration has constructed a world-class airport whose license to operate commercial flights was recently approved by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) and has also commenced the construction of a Dry Inland Port at Kajola, while plans for the construction of a deep seaport at Olokola are in the offing.

Ogun State, the governor emphasized, needs more investment in the transport sector as it is making plans to connect the blue rail lines on Lagos to the State, while also beckoning on Chinese investors to take advantage of the huge arable land to invest in agriculture, as the State is poised to become the food basket of the country.

While calling for the strengthening of bilateral relationships between Nigeria and China, the governor accepted an invitation to visit Shandong Province during its roadshow exhibition to showcase the State’s potentials and attract more Chinese investors to the State.

Speaking earlier, the Chinese Ambassador, Yu Dunhai, said the state hosts about 160 Chinese companies investing more than $1 billion at the Ogun-Guandong Free Trade Zone at Igbesa, Ado-Odo-Ota Local Government Area of the State, assuring that about 100 more were on their way.

He attributed the influx of Chinese investors to the conducive business environment, the good weather, and the friendly nature of the people as the core attractions.

Nigeria, the Ambassador noted, is China’s biggest trading partner on the continent, adding that the signing of a bilateral agreement between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, was to reposition Nigeria-China relations for the mutual benefit of both countries.

Fielding questions from reporters after the visit, Ambassador Dunhai said the Chinese Government encourages Chinese companies to come to Nigeria as it is the largest market in Africa.

“They have provided job opportunities to the locals and contributed to manufacturing, trade, and investment in Nigeria. This is very important cooperation that we have,” he said.

He warned against his nationals’ illegal activities, including illegal mining in Nigeria, urging them to operate within the ambit of the laws in their host country, as the Chinese government and its Nigeria Embassy would not tolerate its nationals flouting the laws of the host country.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Ogun-Guandong Free Trade Zone, Hajia Hafsat Balewa, disclosed that the Chinese Government, through the free trade zone, has contributed significantly to the Gross Domestic Product of the State and the nation as a whole, adding that the visit is to reiterate the bilateral relationship between China and Nigeria.

Ondo SDP sacks state secretary overalleged misconduct, financial impropriety

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has sacked its Ondo State Secretary, Jimmy Akinyan, over alleged insubordination, financial impropriety and anti-party activities.

The decision was taken at a stakeholders meeting of the party, which was attended by the members and the leaders of the SDP in the state held in Akure.

Although, Akinyan has kicked against his sack, saying the party leadership has no locus standing to relieve him of his position.

But addressing reporters after the meeting, SDP Chairman in the state, Mr Gbenga Akinbuli, said the stakeholders found Akinyan guilty of what he also called “grave misconduct’ and act of sabotage during the elections.

He disclosed that the decision to sack Akinyan was unanimously taken by the leaders and members of the party, noting that such behaviour was a violation of the party’s values of loyalty, integrity and discipline.

“Central to the deliberations, however, was the issue concerning the former state Secretary, Comrade Jimmy Akinyan. After a painstaking review and in line with our values of integrity, loyalty and respect for internal discipline, stakeholders resolved that the party leadership must serve as an example to members.

“The findings against the former secretary were grave and could not be ignored. His conduct, which ranged from insubordination, financial impropriety and anti-party activities to acts of sabotage during elections, represented a direct violation of our collective trust.

“In the wisdom of the stakeholders, such behaviour cannot coexist with the principles of loyalty, ideological conviction and organic growth, which the SDP stands for.

“Therefore, in the best interest of the party and in fulfilment of our duty to uphold discipline, the stakeholders unanimously resolved to relieve Comrade Jimmy Akinyan of his position as State Secretary with immediate effect,” he said.

According to him, a five-man disciplinary committee led by the State Legal Adviser has also been constituted to review the matter and advise on Akinyan’s continued membership in the party.

Akinbuli added that Mr Femi Ikoyi has been appointed as the new secretary for the party in acting capacity in the state.

“To ensure continuity and stability, stakeholders also unanimously appointed Mr. Femi Ikoyi as the new State Secretary of the SDP, Ondo State,” he added.

The SDP party chairman insisted that Akinyan’s removal marked the beginning of efforts to rid the SDP of indiscipline and sabotage while repositioning it as a credible opposition in the state.

“We are determined to build a party of conviction and loyalty, one that offers Nigerians a true alternative rooted in discipline, respect, and service to the people.

“I therefore call on all party members, supporters, and the public to rally behind this renewed commitment to unity and discipline,” Akinbuli said.

But reacting, Mr. Akinyan told The Nation that the party had no right to relieve him of his position as the secretary of the SPD in the state.

“The party has no right to sack me, and let me also tell you that Barrister Gbenga is not the party chairman. For that reason, he cannot claim I have been removed,” Akinyan said.

He further claimed that he is the rightful leader of the party in the state, stating that a July decision of the National Executive Committee (NEC) dissolved the working committee and installed a caretaker leadership, with him as chairman.

“I have the letter from INEC that made me the chairman of the party. Initially, I was the state secretary of the party, which was when Olu Agunloye was the National Secretary of the party, but when the NEC met in July, the working committee was dissolved and new a new caretaker committee was put in place.”

Busigo also urged young photographers to remain united and take advantage of the platforms created to support their growth.

“Eventually, we will retire. But when that happens, we want to know that we have capable hands to hand over to,” he said.

Bosugo highlighted the high cost of photography equipment as a major challenge faced by the profession.

“The cheapest camera ranges between ₦3.5 million to ₦10 million, and setting up a world-class studio could cost as much as ₦25 to ₦30 million. We need government support, not just in training but also in empowering photographers with equipment so they can compete globally,” he stressed.

LASPPAN Youth Ambassador, Mr. Afolabi Kayode Ahmmed, described the conference as an avenue for continuous learning and adaptation.

“We are here to learn, unlearn, and relearn. This is our profession, and we must keep updating ourselves to meet current trends. This conference is for educational purposes,” he said.

Also addressing participants, Creative Director of Capital A.K. Media and current EKJ Zone Chairman of LASPPAN, Abiodun Abdul-Akim, emphasised integrity, consistency, and innovation as essential values for success.

“I want to see a Nigeria where photographers are as wealthy as professionals in other industries. I also envision a future where photographers enjoy royalties and copyright benefits, just like the music industry,” he said.

He highlighted the cost of equipment as a major hurdle, urging government and financial institutions to provide loans and subsidies for service-oriented businesses like photography.

On his advice to aspiring photographers, he said:

“Passion is not just by word of mouth. When there are obstacles, challenges, and barriers, stand tall and overcome them. The sky is only the starting point.”
