“If you have dedication and believe in God, nothing will happen to you. We thank God for keeping him alive.

“My prayer is for him to surpass the years the former Oba of Lagos spent on the throne.

“He’s a disciplined man and doesn’t take nonsense. If you offend him, he will tell you to your face,” Fuad said.

Chief Imam of Isale Eko Mosque, Abdulbari Sabba, who led prayers for the monarch, lauded him for his philanthropic gestures.

“We organised this prayer for our monarch, Oba Akiolu, to ask God to give him longevity on the throne and for Allah to spare his life.

Owo pushes for capital status in proposed Ose State

Owo, the historic and economic hub of Ondo North Senatorial District, is at the centre of a heated debate over the proposed Ose State, as stakeholders, including Gbenga Eleduma, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), reject a bill naming Ikare-Akoko as the capital.

Submitted to the National Assembly, the bill has sparked controversy, with Owo’s leaders insisting that the town’s historical significance, strategic location and infrastructural edge make it the rightful capital.

At a recent stakeholder’s conference in Oke-Mapo, Owo, Eleduma said state creation in Nigeria depended on factors like population, geography, economic viability and infrastructure.

“Owo is the undisputed economic and political heart of Ondo North,” Eleduma declared, underscoring the town’s storied legacy and its unmatched suitability as the capital of any new state.

The historical prominence of the town is undeniable. It was a key hub for the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and Afenifere, hosting personalities like Chief Adekunle Ajasin and Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

He said Owo was once an administrative headquarters in the Southwest and remains a cultural powerhouse, producing renowned nationalists and monarchs of international acclaim.

“Today, it hosts the Area Command Unit for Ondo North and serves as the primary venue for major district gatherings.”

The conference, attended by Oba Ajibade Gbadegeshin Ogunoye III and other traditional rulers from Owo-Ose Federal Constituency, condemned the “misrepresentation” in the bill.

“Owo’s strategic location and robust infrastructure make it the only logical choice for the capital,” Eleduma said, echoing the consensus among stakeholders to correct the narrative surrounding the proposed Ose State.

Eleduma, a key stakeholder in Owo, stressed that the people of Ondo North were critical to the state creation process.

He said sidelining Owo undermined the region’s shared history and unity.

“If Ose State is created, Owo must be its capital,” the APC chieftain said, citing the town’s unparalleled contributions to the district’s political and economic landscape.

He called on the National Assembly to recognise Owo’s historical and strategic advantages in the ongoing discourse.

  • No room for ADC coalition in Ondo, says Aiyedatiwa

No room for ADC coalition in Ondo, says Aiyedatiwa

Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has said those flouting the coalition to unseat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general election are day dreamers and unserious politicians, who have no better plans for the country.

Speaking yesterday while receiving Dayo Awude, a former deputy governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP), into the fold of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akure, Aiyedatiwa said there was no room for the coalition of the opposition figures in Ondo.

The governor said the APC remained the sole rallying force for credible politicians in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.

“In Ondo State, there is no room for coalition. It is one APC. People join political parties for different reasons, but the interest of the party must always supersede every other interest, and for us in the APC, that interest is to retain power,” he said.

Aiyedatiwa praised the defectors led by Awude under the Sunshine Grassroots Network (SGN), saying they had made the right decision ahead of the general election to join the APC.

He told the defectors to begin grassroots mobilisation in earnestly for the party ahead of the general election, saying APC must retain power at the federal and state levels.

“You have made the right decision. This is the right place to be because the utmost interest for any political party is to be in power. For us in APC, we want to retain power, and we must do everything that is needed to retain power.

“We acknowledge that you have decided to join us. Your coming will be rewarded. As you can see, the dividends of good governance are showing itself under the leadership of President Tinubu and I as your governor in the state.

“Our declaration for Asiwaju is that Ondo State is for Tinubu in 2027. The whole of Ondo State is for Tinubu in 2027, and to realise this, you have decided to join us. We know winning Ondo State is not an issue but to have overwhelming votes, and you are the evidence of those votes,” he said.

Awude, who ran alongside LP’s governorship candidate, Sola Ebiseeni, in 2023, said he joined the APC to add value, adding that he was willing to support President Tinubu and Governor Aiyedatiwa’s developmental agenda.

Ade Adetimehin, the state chairman of the APC, who welcomed the defectors, urged them to strengthen the party from the grassroots.

He also urged them to begin canvassing votes for the party, starting at their unit and ward levels.

The latest defection marks a blow to the LP’s influence, especially in Ondo State and its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as political realignment intensifies ahead of the 2027 general election.

Obi had joined Atiku Abubakar, former presidential candidate of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and ex-minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, to form the coalition of opposition figures in African Democratic Congress (ADC).

    • Governor swears in three judges

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun yesterday swore in three additional judges into the Ogun State judiciary.

He said the people must see them as the hope for justice, the shield against oppression and the assurance that right would always prevail over might.

The new judges are Mr. Julius Ojikutu, who was the chief registrar of Ogun State High Court, Abeokuta; Mrs. Adejumoke Adewole, former permanent secretary, Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development; and Mrs. Oluyemisi Adebo, ex-secretary of  Ogun State Judicial Service Commission.

Abiodun urged the new judges to ensure they made fairness, integrity and justice their guiding light, noting that the country’s democracy thrived because judges of conscience stood firm in defending the ethos of democratic institutions without fear or favour.

He further advised the judges to let the fear of God, their conscience and the Constitution of Nigeria guide their judgments.

He said the country required judges who were not only learned in the law, but also upright in character and resolute in conduct.

The governor enjoined them to be fair, firm and courageous in the face of pressure and always place the interest of justice and the people above personal interests.

“This is not merely a legal obligation; it is a moral one, ensuring justice is felt in tangible ways by every citizen regardless of tribe, religion, political affiliation, or economic status.

“You must therefore continue to uphold the sacred principles of the separation of powers, ensuring the Executive, Legislative and Judiciary operate independently, yet harmoniously, all within the constitutional framework for the good of the people.

“Let me restate that our government is a responsible and responsive administration that fully appreciates the role of the judiciary in nurturing democracy.

“I stand here today a grateful beneficiary of the courage, impartiality and fidelity to the rule of law shown by our courts.

“We will continue to respect court judgments, support the judiciary with resources and enhance the processes that guarantee swift and fair dispensation of justice,” he said.

UK-based firm empowers 500 Nigerians with skills

A United Kingdom-registered social enterprise with deep Nigerian roots, ‘QwiqKraft’, has empowered over five hundred Nigerian youths to encourage self-employment, equipped them with practical, income-generating skills in printing, branding and entrepreneurship.

Nigerian youths have been beneficiaries of the empowerment since the organisation’s existence in 2020, by training them on creative branding like Mug, t-shirt, cap printing, digital design, product packaging and presentation, as well as social media strategies.

Speaking with journalists after the free skill acquisition training programme for some youths in Ilorin, Founder and Lead Strategist of QwiqKraft, Adedayo Abayomi, said his vision was a step towards actualising economic freedom and self-worth for Nigerian youths.

Abayomi, a UK-based human capacity development advocate, said the empowerment was a passion and legacy that provides training estimated between N3.5 million to N5 million per training, including materials, facilitation, venue, and post-training support, depending on location and scale.

He said, “This reflects our commitment to quality, not just quantity. Because we believe empowerment should be practical, dignified, and transformative. We go beyond theory to equip youth and women with real tools, real skills, and real hope. Every mug printed, every design created, every story shared — it’s a step toward economic freedom and self-worth.

“We do this because we’ve seen the spark in their eyes when they realise. I can do this. I can earn. I can grow. And that’s a legacy worth building. We didn’t come to donate, we came to demonstrate.

“It was sacrificial. Every mile I travelled, every machine hauled, every hour spent under the sun was a testament to QwiqKraft’s unwavering belief that empowerment must be felt, not just promised.

“In Lagos, the energy was electric. Within hours, they were printing on mugs, mouse pads, and t-shirts — watching their ideas come to life in full colour. Thanks to LIGHT View Initiative, RCCG Place of Peace, Lagos, for providing data and moral support.

“In Ilorin, the turnout exceeded expectations. Thanks to the support of OCDI and the Kwara State community, the training reached a wide range of participants. Women who had never touched a heat press were producing branded items with pride. One participant said. I came unsure. I’m leaving unstoppable.

“And in Jos, where hope often battles hardship, the hunger to learn was palpable. With facilitation support from CSRaP (UK), the training became a beacon of possibility.”

He, however, urged government, organisations and other stakeholders to step forward in facilitating a printing hub where youth and women can access equipment, mentorship and market-ready training.

‘Ovia by-election, litmus test to APC success in 2027’

Edo Deputy Governor, Mr Dennis Idahosa, has described Saturday’s Ovia federal constituency by-election as a litmus test for the state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2027 general election.

Idahosa spoke yesterday during the party’s campaign launch for the by-election in Ovia South West Local Government.

He urged party leaders and members to intensify mobilisation and canvassing efforts to ensure victory for the APC, stressing that unity and commitment were key to success.

“On the part of the government, Governor Monday Okpebholo has embarked on infrastructural transformation of the federal constituency to make life more meaningful for the people,” he said.

Addressing residents of Siluko Ward, Idahosa noted that the community, besides its large population, was one of the gateways into Edo, making it strategic for development.

He said the best way to support the governor’s development agenda was to work for the APC’s victory in Saturday’s poll.

“Saturday’s by-election is to show our preparedness for the 2027 general election. I want it to be a 100 per cent win for the APC.

“Be reminded that all the good things that have come to Siluko ward were facilitated by the APC government.

“We are not taking this election for granted. When you get home, tell your family and neighbours that APC is one way, vote for Omosede Igbinedion, the only female candidate for the National Assembly from Edo State,” he said.

Igbinedion described the deputy governor as a grassroots politician who had worked for the transformation of the federal constituency.

She appealed to the people not to relent on their support for the deputy governor, as well as the APC for more infrastructural development.

“With your votes on Saturday, I am going to complement his efforts in Abuja for the total transformation of our constituency,” she said.

Sen. Neda Imasuen said as a second term member of the House, Igbinedion would be able to identify lapses she made in her first term, correct them and influence projects for the betterment of her constituents.

The council Chairman, Nosakhare Edobo, said the governor had shown commitment to the people to deserve their support.

‘PDP has nothing to offer in Ibadan North’

All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oyo State has said Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its candidate in Saturday’s by-election in Ibadan North Federal Constituency have nothing to offer the electorate.

It urged people to vote for the APC candidate, Adewale Olatunji.

The party said there was need for people in the federal constituency to vote for the APC candidate to consolidate the good work President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was doing across the country.

Speaking in Ibadan at the launch of campaign for the party’s candidate, Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, described the by-election as strategic and important, urging the electorate across the federal constituency to come out en masse and vote for APC candidate.

He said people should look beyond the by-election and vote for APC to appreciate the good work President Tinubu was doing across the country.

He said: “This election is not just about Olatunji, it is about Tinubu and the Yoruba. Let us all vote for continuity of the good work the late Akinremi has started. Adelabu said APC in Oyo State is now more united than before, urging the electorate across the federal constituency to show PDP that Oyo State belongs to the progressives.

APC Chairman in the state, Alhaji Olayide Abass, said the party’s candidate would win in the forthcoming election with support of the electorate across the federal constituency.

    • Bayelsa names civil servants quarters after ex-MILAD

To immortalise the memory of Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (rtd), Bayelsa State Government at the weekend renamed its civil service staff quarters after him.

The pronouncement was made by Governor Duoye Diri, at the service of songs for the late three-time minister and former military administrator (MILAD) of Bayelsa State, held at St John’s Protestant Church, Bonny Cantonment, Victoria Island.

The Nation reports that Captain Olubolade, who died in May while playing Tennis in Apapa, Lagos, was the first MILAD of Bayelsa State and the civil service quarters were built by his administration.

Captain Olubolade, who joined politics after his retirement from the military, was appointed a minister three times- Federal Capital Territory (FCT); Special Duties, and Police Affairs.

His body, locked inside a chocolate brown casket with the Nigerian flag draped on it and carefully handled by pallbearers comprising Naval officers, was interred at the Vaults and Gardens in Ikoyi on Saturday afternoon.

Following his remarkable performance as MILAD and his close ties with the state decades afterwards, Bayelsa honoured him with a state burial, as Diri, members of the state executive council and lawmakers from the state House of Assembly attended the funeral rites in Lagos.

Speaking at the ceremonies, Governor Diri described Olubolade as an example of a true Nigerian who embodied unity, service, integrity and patriotism.

He recalled how the deceased officer saved many protesting youths from untimely death by exercising restraint even in the face of massive confrontation when the agitators moved into the Government House to free a detained militant.

“When I asked him why he did nothing despite being a military officer under a military regime, his response was that I did not want to waste innocent blood of my people. That’s the kind of man Captain Olubolade was. Despite being from Ekiti State, he loved and identified with us, we consider him our own very father and son of the Nigerian Delta and that is why for us, this is a state burial,” said Diri.

The governor also recalled how the late MILAD built key infrastructure, including Samson Siasia Stadium, the state’s first civil servants’ quarters, a functional motor park, and several internal roads.

Diri described him as a charismatic, forthright leader who served with dignity, passion and humanity, often returning to Yenagoa after leaving office and even celebrating his 70th birthday there.

He pledged to honour all private agreements he had with Captain Olubolade to his family, praying God to console them during their grieving moment.

Speaking at the funeral service on Saturday, Ekiti State Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji, urged Olubolade’s family to take solace in the exemplary life their patriarch lived, saying his legacy should make his children proud.

The governor encouraged the bereaved to read the many tributes written about Olubolade, noting that they highlight the values and achievements of “the kind of man God gave you as a father.” He appreciated Bayelsa State Government for honouring the memory of Olubolade, describing him as “one of our very best” whose service to the nation would remain an inspiration.

In his tribute, former President Goodluck Jonathan, represented by his wife, Dame Patience, described Olubolade as a dedicated public servant, whose contributions to governance, business and community development were indelible.

Jonathan recalled his impactful roles in various capacities, noting that his work left “unsurpassable marks everywhere we went.”

The former President said the outpouring of respect and attendance at the funeral was a testament to Olubolade’s influence and the lives he touched.

Jonathan emphasised that his passing was a reminder of the transient nature of life and the need to continue building peace and progress in the society.

He prayed for God’s comfort for the bereaved family and called on Nigerians to honour Olubolade’s memory by upholding the values of service, unity and dedication to the common good.

In the same vein, Olubolade’s good friends for over 50 years, Rear Admirals John Jonah Rotimi Ademoletin (rtd), paid glowing tributes to the “man of many parts”, narrating how their parts crossed and his sterling qualities, virtues.

Ademoletin recalled how their bond started when they both got some sort of scholarship from the Western Region to go to the Nigerian Defence Academy.

“We became like brothers and remained inseparable throughout our careers,” he said.

He recounted how Olubolade persuaded him to abandon his medical studies to join the 16th Regular Course at the NDA, an advice that shaped his naval career.

“At the military school, we were both hockey players, often found in each other’s room despite being in different houses. We spent holidays together and shared many family milestones,” Ademoletin said.

He praised Olubolade as a determined, no-nonsense officer who excelled at whatever he set out to achieve, describing the late officer as “a man who lived a purposeful life and set a worthy example.”

Jonah in his tributes recounted how Olubolade taught him to drive in India, confidently pushing him onto the road at 100km/h within an hour of practice.

According to him, it was a moment that marked the beginning of their enduring friendship and mutual respect.

Jonah praised Olubolade’s leadership and problem-solving skills, recalling how, as MILAD, Olubolade called on him to oversee the transfer of boats from Port Harcourt during the asset-sharing exercise with Rivers State.

That task, Jonah said, taught him lessons that shaped his Naval career and opened his eyes to the limitless possibilities of the Nigerian environment, where even small workshops could deliver remarkable engineering solutions.

The retired admiral said his late friend was humorous, approachable and deeply committed to service.

He fondly remembered staying at Olubolade’s home in Aguda so they could share jokes, and expressed comfort in the belief that while they were saying goodbye for now, it was never goodbye forever.

“He was a friend, a brother, and a good man. We will miss him dearly,” added Jonah.

Chairman, Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Godknows Igili, said Olubolade was a nobleman whose death came at a time he was most needed.

Igili described Olubolade as a man of many callings – sailor, politician and administrator- whose stern leadership, doggedness and warm nature would always be remembered.

While proudly Yoruba, PANDEF noted, he was also an “Ijaw man in spirit,” maintaining love and support for the people of Bayelsa State.

Other dignitaries at the funeral rites included former Ekiti governors, Adeniyi Adebayo and Kayode Fayemi; former Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Admiral Dele Ezeoba; a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olabode George; Hydrographer of the federation, Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olugbode; who represented the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; Flag Officer Commanding (FOC) Western Naval Command (WNC), Rear Admiral Michael Oamen, Chief of Training and Operations (CTOPs), Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, and former FOC Eastern Naval Command, Rear Admiral S. • Lagos doctors again threaten indefinite strike

Lagos doctors again threaten indefinite strike

Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Lagos State chapter, has accused the State Treasury Office (STO) of introducing a “crisis-prone” revised medical salary scale that allegedly led to “unfair, wicked and unacceptable” deductions from doctors’ July 2025 salary.

In a statement signed yesterday by its Chairman, Dr. Saheed Babajide Kehinde, the association said the deductions had not been reversed despite repeated appeals and a three-day warning strike by the Medical Guild, the umbrella body of doctors employed by the state government.

According to the NMA, the revised salary scale, implemented by the STO, runs contrary to the interest and welfare of medical and dental practitioners in the state’s employ.

The association warned that unless the deductions were reversed, Lagos could face an indefinite strike by doctors, potentially crippling health care delivery in public hospitals.

“It is sad that despite efforts to prevent disruption of health care delivery in the state, including the three-day warning strike, the concerned ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) appear unbothered by the notice of indefinite strike issued by the Medical Guild,” the statement said.

The association called on the commissioner for Health and permanent secretaries in the health sector to “defend the integrity, dignity, security and welfare” of doctors in the state.

It said if doctors embarked on an indefinite strike, the state’s health leadership should be held responsible “for failing to ensure the return of the illegal deductions from July 2025 salaries.”

NMA Lagos urged its members to review their July payslips and compare them with the revised salary scale.

It warned that the STO’s actions could worsen the “Japa” syndrome, where medical professionals leave the country for better opportunities abroad.

“Enough of the inactions of members of the medical profession leading the Lagos State health sector. NMA Lagos is resolute on ensuring the return of illegally deducted money,” the statement concluded.

The Nation reports that the dispute over salary deductions for Lagos State-employed doctors began earlier this year.

In April 2025, the Medical Guild accused the state government of unilaterally cutting doctors’ pay. Following “spirited intervention and strategic engagement,” the deductions were reversed.

However, in July, the issue resurfaced when the State Treasury Office reportedly implemented a revised medical salary scale, resulting in fresh deductions.

The Medical Guild responded by declaring a three-day warning strike from July 28 to 31, demanding an immediate reversal and full payment of 12-month Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) arrears owed to honorary consultants at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH).

The state government, through the Ministry of Health, appealed to the Medical Guild to shelve the strike, citing ongoing negotiations and stressing that this was the first of such labour action by the Medical Guild in recent years.
