Afenifere hails Tinubu over Southwest Development Commission

The Afenifere Renewal Group (ARG) has expressed optimism that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initiative on regional development commissions will expand economic growth in the Southwest region.

The Ekiti State coordinator, Elder Bunmi Awotiku, stated this in Ado-Ekiti at an event marking 32nd anniversary of June 12, Democracy Day in the country.

Awotiku praised Tinubu for his visionary leadership and commitment to regional development and integration, said the initiative is a welcome development that will harness the region’s socioeconomic potential and promote development.

The event, themed “June 12: Economic Imperatives of Southwest Development Commission,” featured a lecture by Professor Taiwo Owoeye of Ekiti State University.

Awotiku commended Tinubu for his efforts in promoting democracy and development in Nigeria, noting that the President’s initiatives are a testament to his commitment to the country’s growth and progress.

Reflecting on the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic history, the ARG Coordinator, said the 1993 presidential election laid a solid foundation for the country’s democratic growth.

Awotiku lamented the annulment of the freest and credible election won by late Moshood Abiola and the loss of lives during the protests but lauded sacrifices made by Nigerians, which ultimately paved the way for the country’s current democratic dispensation.

He said, “Many here may have not witnessed the election, but we thank God for the ARG , if not for the group, History as a subject wouldn’t have been reintroduced back into the school curriculum.

“Our people are fast forgetting our history, most of children don’t know who is Segun Odegbami, Jeremiah Obafemi Awolowo, even MKO Abiola, we only hear their names but the elders here will know the story of June 12.

“The spontaneous reaction of Nigerians against the annulment of the election led to the killing of people on the streets of Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, Kano and across Nigeria. But let us thank God, because if not for June 12, there won’t be Biodun Oyebanji and talking about shared prosperity.

This has brought freedom and development to Nigeria in all spheres. We need to remind ourselves, where were are coming from , where are we and where are we heading to ? It is this agitation that gave birth to ARG”, he added.

Owoeye, in his lecture, suggested that states in the Southwest region should leverage their comparative advantages to achieve common goals.

He emphasised the need for regional integration, citing the ongoing coastal road project from Lagos to Calabar as a catalyst for economic transformation.

The event drew various interest groups, artisans, market women, students, and government officials, who reflected on the significance of June 12 and the future of Nigeria’s democracy.

  • Peller advocates strengthened democracy on June 12

Peller advocates strengthened democracy on June 12

As Nigeria observes June 12 as Democracy Day, the Ayedero of Yorubaland Hon Shina Peller has called on all Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to engage actively in the democratic process.

In his goodwill message to Nigerians, Peller emphasised June 12 as a time for introspection and joy—a moment to celebrate the triumphs and sacrifices made in the name of democracy, stressing that the day symbolises a turning point in the nation’s political landscape.

Moreover, the Oke Ogun-born businessman-cum- politician noted that June 12 is not merely a date on the calendar, but that it embodies the aspirations and resilience of the Nigerian populace.

Peller called upon citizens to recommit themselves to the values that underpinned the fight for democracy, reminding all that while honouring the legacy of heroes like M.K.O. Abiola and others, it’s crucial to ensure their sacrifices were not in vain.

He further encouraged active participation in political processes, constructive dialogue, and grassroots activism, adding that engaging in these activities is vital for building a stronger, more resilient democratic framework in Nigeria.

While identifying corruption, insecurity, and social inequality as the pressing challenges that continue to plague the nation, Peller stressed that acknowledging these issues is the first step toward meaningful change. He, therefore, urged Nigerians to channel their frustrations into actionable steps by advocating for policies that uplift marginalized communities and promote equitable development across the board.
Peller expressed optimism about the future of Nigeria, describing it as bright, contingent upon a steadfast commitment to democratic principles.

According to him: “Today, as we mark June 12, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, it’s a moment for reflection, celebration, and a renewed commitment to our democratic ideals.

“This day symbolizes a turning point in Nigeria’s history, when the voices of the people rang loud and clear during the 1993 presidential election. Despite subsequent struggles, that moment remains a testament to our resilience and affirmation that democracy is worth fighting for.

“As we honor the late M.K.O Abiola and those who stood up for truth and fairness, let’s reinforce our commitment to uphold the values they fought for. Today, we must actively participate in the political process, engage in constructive dialogue, advocate for our rights, and exercise our franchise. Every action counts, whether through voting, community organizing, or grassroots activism.

“Let’s acknowledge the challenges we face, corruption, insecurity, and social inequality and channel our frustrations into action. Together, let’s advocate for policies that uplift the marginalized and foster development for all. As we celebrate this important day, let’s look ahead with hope and determination. The future of Nigeria is bright, but it depends on our unwavering commitment to democratic principles.

“So, today, let’s remember our past, engage in our present, and envision our future. May this Democracy Day inspire us all to work tirelessly towards a Nigeria where democracy is not merely a political system but a way of life. Let’s cultivate a Nigeria that stands tall as a beacon of democracy, unity, and progress in Africa.”

‘Stakeholder collaboration needed to deepen economic democracy in Nigeria’

The Chief Executive Officer of Oak Holdings, Olukayode Olusanya, has emphasised the crucial need for stronger collaboration between the government and the private sector to foster a more inclusive, economically empowered, and development-focused democracy.

In a goodwill message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the people of Nigeria, Olusanya commended the nation’s resilience and progress since the return to civilian rule, while reminding stakeholders that economic justice, infrastructure development, and social equity must form part of the dividends of democracy.

“Democracy is not merely the conduct of elections; it is the empowerment of people — politically, socially, and economically,” said Olusanya.

“As we honour the memory of June 12 and the price paid for democratic freedoms, we must also ask: how are we using this freedom to create sustainable progress?”

Olusanya highlighted the role of The Oak Holdings, the umbrella group comprising Oak Homes, Oak Capital, and Oak Ready Mix, in advancing Nigeria’s development aspirations. Oak Homes, a luxury real estate brand, is delivering smart, sustainable housing solutions in Lagos, Abuja, and expanding cities. Its flagship projects in Ikoyi, Eko Atlantic, and Lekki are redefining modern architecture, employing local talents, and attracting international interest.

“Oak Capital, the group’s investment and financial services arm, is focused on empowering entrepreneurs and driving innovation across sectors including fintech, healthcare, and agriculture. With a strategic focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, it is providing venture capital, business advisory, and scalable financial solutions to emerging businesses.

“Oak Ready Mix, a vital part of the group, is meeting the construction industry’s demand for premium-quality concrete and aggregates, thus contributing to infrastructure growth and urban expansion.

“Each subsidiary of The Oak Holdings is rooted in a vision of nation-building. Whether we are building homes, funding ideas, or mixing concrete, we are laying the blocks of Nigeria’s democratic future,” Olusanya said.

He further remarked that political stability alone is not enough to sustain democracy without economic inclusion, adequate housing, and access to capital.

“When people are housed, employed, and able to dream, democracy becomes meaningful. Our goal at The Oak Holdings is to be a catalyst in that process,” he said.

Olusanya also appealed for policy reforms that will improve the ease of doing business, encourage indigenous investment, and protect ethical private sector contributions to the economy.

“As an indigenous company, we understand the terrain, and we believe the government can further enable homegrown businesses like ours to scale, create jobs, and attract foreign investment,” he added.

The Oak Holdings CEO used the opportunity to express hope for the country, reaffirming the company’s long-term commitment to Nigeria’s growth.

“On this special day, we reaffirm our belief in the Nigerian project. We believe in the power of partnership, the resilience of our people, and the promise of tomorrow. Oak Holdings is proud to stand not just as a business, but as a builder of hope, excellence, and national legacy.”

Olusanya extended warm wishes to President Tinubu and his administration, expressing optimism that his leadership will continue to drive reforms and partnerships that deepen Nigeria’s democratic and economic transformation.

  • OSGoF, NASRDA seek presidential intervention on satellite investment, iron ore deposit exploration

OSGoF, NASRDA seek presidential intervention on satellite investment, iron ore deposit exploration

The Surveyor General of the Federation, Surv. Adeyemi Adebomehin, has called for urgent presidential intervention to accelerate investment in high-precision satellites for Nigeria.

He stressed that such a move is essential to curb the financial losses incurred by government agencies that currently rely on foreign sources for satellite data.

This comes as the Director General of the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), Dr. Matthew Adepoju, raised concerns over the urgent need to identify new iron ore deposits for future industrial use, warning that the current reserves in Ajaokuta could be exhausted within a decade of full-scale operations at the Ajaokuta Steel Complex.

These emerged during a strategic meeting that focused on strengthening inter-agency collaboration in areas such as geospatial data management, satellite services, communication infrastructure, and support for the forthcoming national census in Abuja on Tuesday between the Surveyor General of the Federation and NASRDA management team, led by Dr. Adepoju.

Adebomehin who underscored the need for Nigeria to acquire satellites capable of delivering sub-10cm accuracy, said it is a critical requirement for national planning, defense operations, and infrastructure development.

In a statement by Henry David, the Head of Information and Public Relations at the OSGoF on Wednesday, the Surveyor General stressed that such procurement should be prioritized at the highest level of government, saying, “In terms of satellite services, the government is losing huge sums due to MDAs procuring data from foreign sources.

“You may still have to find a way to meet Mr President and ask him that you want a satellite that can give an accuracy of less than 10 centimetres.

“In terms of a satellite you need the requisite system and the software, in order to stop what the government is losing in terms of MDA going out to acquire satellites.

” I will still want you to assist us more. I’m saying on the side of the satellite”

Dr. Adepoju, in his remarks, highlighted the urgent need for joint action in identifying new mineral deposits for future industrial use, especially as existing steel resources in Ajaokuta are projected to be depleted within a decade.

He expressed NASRDA’s willingness to work alongside OSGoF and the Ministry of Steel Development to support national industrialization goals.

Both agencies also raised concerns about health risks associated with poorly regulated telecommunication infrastructure.

They cited increasing cancer rates potentially linked to ground stations and telecom masts placed in densely populated areas.

They jointly recommended co-location of telecom infrastructure a global best practice to minimize radiation exposure and ensure more effective regulation.

The meeting emphasized the critical importance of collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) ahead of the national census.

The agencies pledged technical support to ensure the accuracy and credibility of population data, noting that reliable geospatial and surveying inputs are foundational to census planning.

Director of Geodesy at OSGoF, Surv. Duniya Joseph, echoed the need for stronger cooperation among government bodies, saying, “When agencies work together, especially with OSGoF, outcomes are better, as seen in military collaborations.

“The problem is too much silo thinking driven by budgets. We need to focus on shared advantages”.

In a show of solidarity, the NASRDA team presented symbolic gifts to the SGOoF, welcoming him as a key partner in national development and as a member of the extended NASRDA family.

  • Makinde, Mbah, Ministers, Dabiri-Erewa, others harp on diaspora support against medical tourism

Makinde, Mbah, Ministers, Dabiri-Erewa, others harp on diaspora support against medical tourism

Governors Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, his Enugu State counterpart, Peter Mbah, the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, his counterpart at Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Prof Muhhamad Alli Pate, the Chairman/Chief Execurive Officer, Nigerians in Diaapora Commission (NIDCOM), Dr Abike Dabiri-Erewa on Wednesday called on foreign based medical experts of Nigerian to consider deploying their skills and expertise to boosting the health sector in a bid to reverse medical tousirm.

Noting that many experts are keying into the idea of giving back to the society through their expertise and medical profession, the signatories promised relevant support to ensure that willing Nigerians in Diaspora play good roles to help improve the health sector.

The speakers made the remarks in their separate speeches at the Commissioning of Block C, the first of six blocks of the student’s hostel building project of the College of Medicine, University of Ibadan (CoMUI).

The building was donated by a member of the 1985 Alumni set of the College, Dr Philip Ozuah.

Ozuah, a physician, educator and healthcare Executive currently serve as the President and CEO of Montefiore Medicine, the umbrella organisation for Montefiore Health System and Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, USA.

The Nation reports that Ozuah had on August 1, 2022 donated the sum of $1million USD for the project.

Speakers at the event lauded Ozuah’s generosity and encouraged other Nigerians in the diaspora to emulate his example.

Both Governor Makinde and Governor Mbah were represented at the event by their deputies: Bayo Lawal and Ifeanyi Ossai respectively.

The governors urged other Diasporians to emulate and contribute to the upliftment of humanity, saying that institutions all over the world live on the strength of benevolence and generosity of their alumnus and urge for increased support.

Highlighting the challenges facing medical education in Nigeria, including limited capacity and brain drain, Lawal emphasized the need for stakeholders to work together to expand facilities and train more medical professionals.

Ossai on his part, while commending Dr. Ozuah for his philanthropic gesture said the state governments are ready to partner NIDCOM in encouraging other Nigerians in the diaspora to follow suit in a bid to improving the medical and health sector while also tackling the japa menace among health practitioners.

In his remarks, Minister for Education, Dr Maruf Alausa, described the Philip Ozuah hostel as a symbol of unwavering commitment to the growth of Nigeria’s health care system and a powerful testament to the enduring values of philanthropy, patriotism, and service to humanity.

Dr. Alausa, who was represented by the director in the office of the Directorate Senior Secondary Education, Mr. Adewale Aderibigbe, said the contribution reflects a spirit of giving that transcends borders and reminds individuals that roots remain firmly planted in Nigeria and therefore urged that the hostel should serve as a beacon of hope, service, and excellence.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, who spoke through Dr. Jimoh Salaudeen, the director of health services, said that the donation would compliment the effort of the federal government to increase the admission quota of all health workers by the university to address the incessant brain drain and upgrading facilities required by the students in the university.

Chairman Nigerians in the Diaspora Commission, Honorable (Dr) Abike Dabiri-Erewa speaking at the commissioning said, doctors working with other healthcare professionals in the country can change the face of medical tourism and reverse medical tourism.

She recounted that, in the last four years, about 10 hospitals have been built by diaspora doctors, with one just commissioned in Abuja, the African Medical Center of Excellence, an indication that Nigerian doctors are returning to Nigeria to give back.

She said, “I’m sure our doctors in the diaspora can turn it around. We can have a situation where people come to Nigeria for their health needs rather than going out. However, who do you meet when you go out? A lot of them are Nigerian doctors.

“So working with them, I’m sure that can happen. We can change the face of medical tourism and reverse medical tourism in the diaspora by working with our health practitioners at home. We also believe that if they come together collectively, they can build a medical center of excellence. Because we have the capacity, we have the numbers, all we need is the structural organisation to make it happen.”

The Consul General of the Nigerian Mission in New York also commended Dr. Ozuah for his generosity and encouraged other Nigerians in the diaspora to engage with the mission. He recounted the various ways the donor has been supportive of the Nigeria project while also flying the country’s flag high through his philanthropic gestures.

UI’s Vice chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale celebrated Prof. Ozuah’s legacy and his commitment to his roots, saying his decision to champion and substantially fund the hostel project reflects his unwavering belief in giving back and empowering the next generation of medical professionals.

According to him, quality accommodation is a critical component of academic success; having a comfortable, secure, and conducive living environment is not a luxury, but a necessity.

“The success of this project should serve as a clarion call to other alumni and friends of the university; there is still much work to be done to advance our infrastructure and academic offerings. Let us emulate Professor Ozuah’s example by investing in initiatives that will sustain UI’s leadership in education and research.

President of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association World Wide (ICOMAA -WW), Emeritus Professor Samuel Omokhodion, said the Philip Ozuah hostel block at the cost of $ 1 million donors would house 168 students and stand as a testament to the shared vision and unwavering determination of the college alumni.

He therefore, urged more donors to support the completion of the remaining blocks of hostel to accommodate over 500 occupants in response to the requirements set forth by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria to house all clinical students on the hospital premises.

  • Cleric seeks Oyebanji’s intervention on prolonged black out in Ekiti communities

Cleric seeks Oyebanji’s intervention on prolonged black out in Ekiti communities

A cleric, Prophet Adegboyega Ologbonyo, has requested urgent intervention of Ekiti Governor, Abiodun Oyebanji over eight-month blackout in Ise-Orun and Emure communities in Ekiti State.

He lamented the communities have been plunged into agonising blackout for the past eight months.

Speaking at the 16th anniversary of CAC Boanerges, Ologbonyo, who is the Zonal Superintendent, said the prolonged lack of electricity has not only jeopardised countless businesses in the communities, which has led to significant financial losses, but also thrust many families into unimaginable hardship, struggling to meet basic financial needs.

He said: “As someone who has lived and served in these communities for more than 26 years, I bear witness to the persistent challenges that residents face daily. Throughout these decades, the absence of functioning pipe-borne water has been a constant struggle as I have not witnessed any that produces water for the people.

“Our people are forced to expend valuable time, energy, and resources in search of their own water sources, a basic necessity that should be readily available.”

He said aside lack of electricity, the state of roads network in Ise-Orun and Emure Ekiti was also deplorable, which according to him is hindering economic activity and making daily commutes a burden.

He noted that majority of people in Ise-Orun, Emure communities are farming, adding that providing motorable roads that connect the farms to the cities would go a long way in boosting the economy.

According to him: “The roads connecting Uso, Ijan and Agbado to Ise Ekiti, as well as Emure Ilé to Ọwọ are extremely important to the agricultural economy of the people. At present, the deplorable state of these roads has not only hindered the economic activities, but it has made the roads to become terrifying hide-outs for kidnappers, making the security situation to become increasingly alarming, and causing fear and uncertainty among the citizens.

“This situation would not encourage the attraction of investors into these communities, and may truncated the economic potentials of the communities.

“I know our Governor to be a good listener, a leader who truly has the welfare of his people at heart. It is this conviction that emboldens me to lay these pressing issues before you. I humbly implore you, Your Excellency, and all relevant stakeholders, to urgently address these critical concerns.

“Restoring electricity, providing access to clean pipe-borne water, improving our road infrastructure, and bolstering security are not just desires; they are fundamental rights that will significantly uplift the lives of our people.

“The government can consider embracing the use of modern technology like drones and other viable solutions that are being used in the Western world to enhance the government’s efforts in guaranteeing the security of its citizens.

“I pray the Lord continues to bless His Excellency and every other stakeholder involved in the governance of our state. Your efforts to improve the lives of Ekiti citizens are deeply valued.”

Cultism: Edo denies arm-twisting opposition leaders to join APC

    • PDP: Okpebholo has embarked on political witch-hunt

Edo State government has denied allegations by leaders of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that it is using the anti-cultism law to force them to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

It said it was impartial in enacting the law.

Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Paul Ohonbamu, said  the APC does not need to force anybody to join the party.

Ohonbamu said several buildings linked to kidnappers and cultism hde been demolished in line with the laws.

The Iruekpen country home of a former Speaker of the House of Assembly, Marcus Onobun, was on Tuesday, marked for demolition because cultists reportedly grouped in the house after a clash between rival cult groups.

Onobun, who represents Esan West/Esan Central/Igueben Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, said the anti-cultism law targeted opposition leaders.

Onobun challenged the Edo government to persuade opposition leaders to support the party rather than marking their houses for demolition.

“If there were cult activities they should be able to bring proof. Don’t target opposition leaders,” he said.

The PDP condemned what it termed ‘perpetual resort to political harassment and witch-hunt in a desperate attempt to intimidate, silence, and cripple the opposition in Edo State’.

It said the building of another PDP chieftain, Collins Aigbogun, was also marked for demolition.

Caretaker Chairman of the Edo PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, said the Edo government’s move represented a disturbing abuse of power and a misuse of legislation to target political opponents.

He said the anti-cultism law, as passed, stipulates that property could only be subject to forfeiture or demolition after a valid conviction by the court.

PDP said in a statement: “This is not law enforcement; it is a political witch-hunt,’’ he added.
