    Lagos council poll: APC chairmanship aspirants to pay N5.5m nomination fees

    All Progressives Congress (APC) has fixed the nomination and administrative fees for aspirants vying for seats in the July 12 local government election in Lagos State.

    The fees are contained in the party’s election guidelines, jointly signed by Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi and Dr Adeola Jokomba, APC chairman and secretary.

    The party in the guidelines released yesterday, said chairmanship aspirants would pay N5 million as nomination fee and an additional N500,000 as administrative fee.

    According to the party, female chairmanship aspirants are to pay N2.5 million as nomination fee and the same N500,000 as administrative fee.

    APC said aspirants below the age of 40 years would have 50 per cent discount on their nomination fee,  but would  pay same administrative fee of N500,000.

    The party, however, waived nomination fee for aspirants with disabilities, while charging an administration fee of N250,000.

    “For the councillorship position, male aspirants will pay N1 million for nomination form and N100,000 administrative fee, while female aspirants will pay N250,000 for nomination form and N100,000 as administrative fee.

     “Youths aspiring for councillorship positions will have a 50 per cent discount for nomination form fee, while the administrative fee remains the same.

    “Persons Living With Disabilities (PLWDs) will collect the nomination forms free for councillorship seats, while administrative fee is N50,000.

    “There shall not be a separate fee for the vice chairman. These fees shall be paid by way of bank draft in favour of All Progressives Congress, Lagos State,” the party said.

    Giving more details, the party says nomination form for chairmanship position shall be supported by five registered members, who are registered voters in all the aspirants’ wards, local governments or LCDAs.

    It noted that for the councillorship seats, the nomination form shall be supported by 20 registered members, who are registered voters in the aspirants’ wards.

    The party said all aspirants must be Nigerian citizens in addition to possessing other qualifications and meeting other conditions for the election.

    An aspirant must be educated up to at least school certificate level or its equivalent. A higher qualification will be an added advantage.

     “For council and LCDA chairmanship, the aspirant has to attain the age of 30, while for councillorship, the aspirant has to attain the age of 25.

     “All aspirants are to submit evidence of membership of the party. Aspirants are to submit a demonstrable evidence of active party support.

    “Aspirants must provide a portfolio of loyalty to the party. All aspirants must sign the party’s Code of Conduct.

     “Only aspirants cleared by the Screening Committee shall be eligible to stand election at the party’s primaries,” the party said.

    According to the APC, any party office holder interested in contesting for an elective office (whether party office or office in a general election) shall resign and leave office 30 days prior to the date of election or party primary.

    It said all aspirants “shall comply with constitutional provisions and requirements applicable to the public office they seek to contest for.”

    ‘Blue Line Rail has transported over 2m passengers’

    Lagos State Government has announced a milestone in its transportation sector. It said Blue Line Rail has transported over two million passengers since its launch, adding that BRT buses have also transported an average of 42,000 commuters daily.

    The figures were disclosed by the Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa. The event marked the second anniversary of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term.

    An industrialist in Ondo State, Chief Alex Ajipe, has said the decision of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to spend the Easter holiday at Araromi Seaside in Ilaje Local Government would improve the economy of the state.

    He said he was delighted that the governor took the lead to promote tourism attractions across the state, including Araromi Beach.

    Governor Aiyedatiwa and his wife, Oluwaseun, joined fun seekers at Araromi Seaside during the Easter festivities.

    Ajipe, in a letter addressed to Aiyedatiwa, hailed his visionary leadership and strategic approach to economic development.

    He said the governor’s consistent patronage of Araromi Beach corridor was a testament to his commitment to showcasing the state’s potential and attracting investments.

    The National Coordinator of Coalition 91, Mr. Nurein Adegoke, has urged Nigerians to trust the reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

    He described them as bold, strategic and essential for Nigeria’s long-term stability and growth.

    In a statement yesterday, Adegoke praised the administration’s performance across key sectors, noting that Tinubu was delivering on his campaign promises.

    “President Tinubu’s reforms are converting our liabilities into opportunities. The removal of fuel subsidy, though tough, is necessary for the sustainability of our economy. We must look beyond short-term discomfort and see the long-term vision,” he said.

    Adegoke mentioned Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFund) as a major win for educational equity, noting that the initiative was already making higher education accessible to underprivileged families.

    “Since the inception of this administration, there hasn’t been a strike by ASUU. This alone speaks volumes about the progress in our education sector,” he said.

    On food and national security, Adegoke revealed that over 500,000 hectares had been cultivated in Niger State, enhancing local food production.

    Backing Tinubu’s leadership, Adegoke recalled the President’s achievements as former governor of Lagos State, including the transformation of Lekki and the stabilisation of Bar Beach.

    “These were no small feats. They give us confidence that national reforms will also deliver results,” he said.

    He warned against attempts by opposition elements to destabilise the country and called on security agencies to remain vigilant.

    “Anyone sponsoring or perpetrating insecurity must be exposed and brought to justice. To President Tinubu, I say: keep up the good work, Nigeria is with you. And to Nigerians: stay hopeful and supportive. We are on the right path.”

    The Omituntun Initiative in the Diaspora (OID), the good governance professional action group, has announced the appointment of Mogaji Kayode Ogunsola as its chairman for North America, overseeing activities of the group in the United States and Canada. 

    The professional group also lauded Governor Makinde’s administration for its outstanding performance in delivering the dividends of democracy. 

    The group noted  the Governor’s economic reforms and people-friendly policies under the Omituntun 1.0 (2019–2023) and Omituntun 2.0 (2023–2027) agendas have driven development across critical sectors such as infrastructure, health, security, education, agribusiness, tourism, and solid minerals.

    IOID Convener, Mr Moses Eledan, approved the appointment of Oguntola, which was announced in a statement signed by the OID spokesperson, Barrister Ayotomiwa Adebayo. 

    According to the release, Mogaji Ogunsola is a former Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation Europe (NIDOE), UK chapter. 

    He served as General Manager and Deputy Director for Business Development and Investment (Finance) at the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), a parastatal under the Federal Ministry of Aviation.

    Ogunsola holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Ibadan, an Executive MBA from Cranfield University School of Management, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from the University of London and a Postgraduate in Information Systems Design from the University of Westminster, UK. He is pursuing a PhD in Europe.

    “We are grateful for his willingness to serve and confident that he will be a tremendous asset to the organisation. Mogaji Ogunsola brings to OID over 30 years of extensive multinational corporate experience, both locally and internationally,” the release added.

    He praised Makinde, for his visionary leadership and unwavering dedication to public service. 

    Describing the Governor as ‘a servant leader who has made the noble sacrifice of offering himself in service to the people.’

    Ogunsola also described Makinde as a promise keeper capable of turning vision into tangible progress. 

    He further described Makinde as the best-performing governor in Nigeria, applauding his administration for laying a strong foundation for citizen-focused governance and setting a national standard for socio-economic development.

    Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and the Editor-in-Chief, Leadership Newspaper, Azubuike Ishiekwene, have sought for stakeholders’ collaboration towards providing necessary frameworks for continuous learning of information communication technology by the Nigerian youths.

    Speaking at the 3rd graduation ceremony of the Yomi Denzel Foundation, Ibadan, the governor, called on the private and public sectors, philanthropist, and organisations to invest in the future of the youth through technology.

    Represented by the state’s commissioner for youths and sports, Wasilat Adegoke, the governor noted that technology driven, education and skills development must be accessible to all.

    According to him, technology, education and skill development remain a significant driver of economy transformation in this modern life.

    The governor appreciated the vision, the passion and unveiling commitment of Mr Yomi Denzel Olaniyi, the founder of the oundation. 

    He said, “Your investment in young Nigerians through tech education is not only but deeply intact, you have become a brick between doings and opportunity for our youth, and we are grateful for your dedication.

    “The real motivation of this foundation to empower Nigeria full youth, your programming skills in terms of gold chain, machine learning and data science, aligns perfectly with our commitment to you the government, innovation and job creation. 

    “As the world evolves, so must our strategy for empowering the next generation, technology the new front, and our youth must be decreed to learn in that space.”

    Makinde, who emphasised the importance of building a knowledge based economy and others in the leadership, disclosed that the state had invested massively in education, digital infrastructure, and skill acquisition programmes. 

    “This administration believes that giving our youth the right tools is not just an act of governors, it is a moral obligation to the future.

    “Today we celebrate not only the graduation, but 50 bright and determined young minds, but also the transformative power of vision driven initiative like the Yomi Denzel Foundation.

    The governor, who commended the goundation’s president, said “We are looking forward to partnering with likewise organisation to amplify our collective effort in youth empowerment, digital innovation, education and so on and so forth”.

    The guest speaker, Ishiekwene, in his lecture titled; “Empowering Nigeria’s Tech Future, One Young Mind At A Time”, noted that Nigeria stood at the cusp of a digital transformation driven by its youth. 

    He said with over 63 percent of the population under 25 (and 70% under 30), the nation’s demographic dividend provides a vast reservoir of tech-savvy, ambitious young minds, adding that this generation had grown up mobile-first, spurring rapid digital adoption. 

    While noting that Nigeria boasts Africa’s largest tech hub ecosystem, home to around 90 active tech hubs, the most on the continent, he said “We must candidly address the challenges that threaten to hold back Nigeria’s youth-driven tech future. 

    According to him, these include infrastructural deficits, funding hurdles, educational and social gaps, access to funding, education and skill mismatch, gender disparity in tech, regional and economic inequality, brain drain and talent retention.

    As a way to inspire the next generation, Ishiekwene recommended integration of digital skills in mainstream education, a practical step for the ministry of education to pilot a “Coding and Robotics” curriculum in a few states, working with partners like Coderina or private EdTech firms, and then scale up.

    He further recommended creation of more youth innovation hubs and incubators (Unilag and Covenant Universities are good examples), mentorship and role model programmes, promote inclusive participation and diversity, leverage government policy and investment, encourage private sector and academic collaborations, cultivate entrepreneurial mindset and soft skills and provide frameworks for continuous learning.

    He also called for the celebration and communicate success stories like the Yomi Denzel Foundation, to foster a mission to solve Nigeria’s tech problems to inspire the youth., adding, 

    Speaking with newsmen, Ishiekwene said, “Clear from what we have seen this afternoon that the youth, young people from Yomi Denzel Foundation are already rising that future.

    “Our role is to support you, to inspire you now I want to share with you some factors that are responsible for the kind of rapid change that we have seen among you all.”

    Addressing the graduands, the foundation’s president, Yomi Denzel Olaniyi, noted that they had worked hard during this year, and this was the end of the year, adding, “I want to stress that this is the beginning of your lives.

    “This is not the end, this is the beginning, I know you are young, you are teenager and you are often when you are young that you just have to go through life, the responsibility is on our parents on the government.

    “Which friends do you have, who do you hang out with, do you concentrate on school, on working, on doing something positive for your life in the future or do you choose the easy part, this will decide your whole life, and you need to take the choice of your life right now.

    “We are urging you to do so but the only, the one and only person who can control your life and take it to success is yourself”, he added.

    Ahead of the 2025 Hajj, the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration has begun free medical screening for this year’s Hajj-intending pilgrims to check and know their health status, address any health challenge and get treated before going to the Holy Land.

    Lagos State Government therefore called on the intending pilgrims travelling from Lagos to Saudi Arabia to take advantage of the free medical opportunity.

    Speaking during Lagos State Government Free Medical Screening for the Year 2025 intending pilgrims organised by the Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board for those from Badagry and Ojo local governments, held at Badagry Local Government Secretariat, Ajara, Commissioner for Home Affairs, Ibrahim Layode, said the gesture was sponsored by Governor Sanwo-Olu and his deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat.

    He restated the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to a healthy Lagos and warned that those who didn’t do the medical screening might not be allowed to travel for the Hajj.

    Layode, who urged the 1,400 intending pilgrims with Lagos State Government officials, who would be performing the 2025 Hajj exercise in Saudi Arabia to be good ambassadors, commended Governor Sanwo-Olu and Dr Hamzat for decentralising the free medical screening to make it seamless for people.

    He said the medical screening would help in reducing casualties during the Hajj because it would help people to know the state of their health and take necessary medications before travelling to Saudi Arabia and during their stay in the country for the religious exercise.

    The commissioner implored the intending pilgrims to continue praying for Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Governor Sanwo-Olu, his deputy, Dr Hamzat, and Lagos State.

    The Secretary of Lagos State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Mr. AbdulHakeem Ajomagberin, said one of the rules set was for people to be healthy to take part in the Hajj to guide them to live a perfect life.

    He therefore urged intending pilgrims to be good representatives of Lagos and pray for the progress of the state and Nigeria for the benefit of all.

    The Director of Medical, Admin, Training, and Programmes, Ministry of Health, Dr Mezeedat Erinosho, said the free medical screening, which was mandated by the Lagos State Government for all intending Muslim pilgrims in the state to take place in designated areas in the state on different days, was aimed at encouraging people to imbibe a health-seeking behaviour among Lagosians to know their status, be vaccinated, and take the opportunity of the medical screening to get holistic care.

    The intending pilgrims thanked Lagos State Government for the intervention, saying it would help them to get better medical attention before travelling to Saudi Arabia for the Hajj.

    Experts and industry leaders are set to convene on Lagos, Nigeria to address the challenges associated with migration, known as ‘Japa’.

    The conference, billed to hold in Lagos on May 31 with the theme: ‘Exploring all dimensions of the Japa syndrome in Nigeria’, aims to provide information that will allow individuals to make an informed decision on the need to ‘japa’ or not to.

    The convener of the summit, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Fountain of Life Sanctuary, under the leadership Pastor Noruwa Edokpolo, said there was lack of adequate information from prospective migrants, hence the need to bring together experts from fields of human endeavour to open the eyes and minds of Nigerians to ‘Japa’ syndrome.

    “The conference aims to provide information that will allow individuals to make an informed decision on the reason to ‘japa’ or not to.

    “The issue of ‘Japa’ is a great concern to us, the church, the entire nation, hence, everything must be put in place to ensure proper decision is taken based on the adequate information,” he said.

    He says the conference seeks to create space for honest dialogue, community reflection and faith-based engagement on what it means to stay, go or return purposefully.

    Edokpolo said: “Exploring all dimensions of the ‘Japa’ syndrome in Nigeria will bring together thought leaders, policy experts, faith leaders and professionals to unpack the hard and soft issues surrounding migration.

    “Experts will share insights and experience, contributing to a deeper understanding of the challenges and opportunities on the migration issue.”

    He says despite the exodus of health workers and other essential service providers, Nigeria’s economy still has what it takes to make lives better for the citizens.

    The conference is expected to educate Nigerians on ‘Japa’ syndrome, as experts from fields of human endeavour will converge on Lagos to examine the cost, causes and consequences of mass emigration trend.
