Analyst tackles Adeleke over defection to Accord Party

Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke’s recent decision to join the Accord Party has sparked debate, with analysts raising concerns over the faction he aligned with.

The Accord Party has been deeply divided for months, with Bar. Maxwell Ndubem and Prof. Chris Imumolen both claiming the national chairmanship. In October 2024, the FCT High Court ruled that Prof. Chris Imumolen is the authentic National Chairman.

Despite this ruling, INEC has yet to fully implement the court’s order, allowing both factions to operate simultaneously.

Governor Adeleke reportedly joined the faction led by Bar. Maxwell Ndubem, a group considered by some as recognised by INEC, but legally inferior to the court-backed leadership of Prof. Imumolen.

Analysts warned that Adeleke’s alignment could carry serious political consequences.

“If the discrepancy between the court-recognised leadership and the INEC-acknowledged faction is not resolved, it may affect Governor Adeleke’s legitimacy within the Accord Party and threaten his re-election prospects in 2027,” one political analyst said.

Experts noted that for a governor seeking a stable platform for re-election, joining a faction in defiance of a court ruling could be a costly strategic error unless the matter is addressed promptly.

Oyo deploys joint security team to comb old national park

The Oyo State Government has announced that a combined security team, including the military, is currently combing the Old Oyo National Park, a vast forest stretching into Kwara and Niger states, as part of renewed efforts to flush out criminal elements.

The government said the operation is aimed at preventing bandits and terrorists from infiltrating or occupying the area.

It added that while the state is not under any banditry threat, all identified flashpoints will be cleared to ensure criminal groups do not gain ground.

Addressing journalists after Wednesday’s Expanded Security Council Meeting presided over by Governor Seyi Makinde, the Special Adviser on Security, Fatai Owoseni, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.

He noted that Oyo State will continue to strengthen collaborations with non-state actors to enhance its integrated security architecture, assuring residents that no effort or resource will be spared to keep the state safe and unconducive for criminal activities.

He added that despite the challenges of crime and criminalities in the country, Oyo state government has been rising to the occasion in tackling the challenges by ensuring that patrol teams are located in strategic places.

He also stated that the government has put in place a number of measures to make the state too hot for criminals, which include joint visibility patrols, adding that the state has also activated swift deployment squads.

Expatiating on the collaboration between the state government and non-state actors to secure the state, Owoseni said, “With regards to non-state actors, we have been doing this for a while. It is really a form of partnership between the government and some sectors to secure the state. It is integrating non-state actors into the state’s security architecture.

“That is basically what Oyo State has adopted. We have an integrated security architecture, where the non-state actors are properly integrated into our architecture.

“I will cite the example of Ibadan, where we have the Mogajis Initiative, which His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland chairs and coordinates. Each of the Mogajis coordinates these non-state actors in his domain, and that is also being done in other parts of the state.

“Similarly, the local governments are championing what we call the voluntary policing sector. We started this like almost three years ago, where the local government chairman uses the neighborhood watch initiatives and put them under what we call the voluntary policing sector.

“By the way also, the fringes of Oyo State are shared boundaries. We have been engaging our neighbouring states for a while with a view to securing our borders. There is an initiative on security between Oyo and Ogun states, but Lagos and Osun states have joined that initiative. We held a meeting about two weeks ago to put up strategies on how to secure our shared boundaries. Of course, we are looking forward to a situation whereby we will bring a state like Kwara into the fold as well.”

Speaking on mining activities in the state, Owoseni disclosed that all miners licensed by the Federal Government must align with the rules and regulations of Oyo State and also involve the local communities and the traditional rulers of the environments where they want to operate before they can be allowed to operate.

He stressed that any company that fails to respect the state’s guidelines with respect to protecting the people and the environment from mining hazards would not be allowed to operate in the state.

Owoseni expressed the appreciation of Governor Seyi Makinde to all the service commanders and their agencies for the synergy, dedication and support to the state government on security, urging all residents of the state to see security as a responsibility for everyone.

He charged residents to always call the 615 Emergency Number to report suspicious acts or report emergencies.

In their separate remarks, the Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice, Biodun Aikomo and the Chairman of Local Government Chairmen in Oyo State, Hon Sikiru Sanda, assured that the state government would continue to protect and respect the rights of the citizens within the ambits of the law.

Speaking on behalf of the traditional rulers, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi, the Osi Olubadan, lauded the government for the initiative and promised that the traditional institution would continue to support the government to prevent crimes in communities.

The meeting was also attended by the Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal; the Secretary to Oyo State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo; the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Otunba Segun Ogunwuyi; Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo; the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rasidi Ladoja; the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, other traditional rulers, local government chairmen, and service commanders.

  • Adegbonmire hails Tinubu as ‘Mega Empowerment’ initiative impacts lives in Ondo

Adegbonmire hails Tinubu as ‘Mega Empowerment’ initiative impacts lives in Ondo

The Senator representing Ondo Central Senatorial District, Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire, has lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for what he described as a new phase of “mega empowerment” currently transforming the lives of people across his senatorial district.

Senator Adegbonmire spoke at an empowerment programme personally initiated by him and tagged the Adegbonmire Renewed Hope Mega Empowerment Programme, held in Akure for members of his constituency.

The Nation reports that items distributed at the programme included motorcycles, tricycles, generators, sewing machines, freezers, industrial machines, wheelchairs, dryers, educational materials, cash rewards and other livelihood-support tools.

Speaking, Senator Adegbonmire said President Tinubu’s emphasis on inclusive development is becoming increasingly evident at the grassroots, with various empowerment interventions reaching the people.

He noted that the economic reforms and intervention programmes of the Tinubu administration have brought development to several communities, with many witnessing improved access to livelihood support and small-scale economic growth.

“As you can see, it is mega empowerment for renewed hope. That is the slogan of President Bola Tinubu. As a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the National Assembly, I am happy to continue to support Mr. President because I think he’s doing very well.

“Since he cannot do everything himself, those of us who are supporting him must do everything to ensure that people feel the impact of Mr. President. So I thank President Bola Tinubu for giving me this opportunity to give back to my constituents,” the senator said.

He added: “The President is not going to come to Ondo State to campaign. We will campaign for him. This is part of the campaign for Mr. President. Hence, it is in support of the President, in support of the state government also.

“If we do well, then the government here has done well. The President has done well. So, this is in support of both the President and the state government, and my party – APC- the only party in Nigeria.”

Adegbonmire further explained that the empowerment programme cut across widows, artisans, market women, and business owners, noting that close to 1,000 constituents would benefit from the gesture.

“We are empowering about 200 widows, artisans, and market women with cash. Ultimately, cash beneficiaries are about 200 people, while items go to about 650 beneficiaries – approximately 850 to 900 people.

“As you all know, I have spent about two and a half years in the Senate. In 2023, we couldn’t do much because of the budget cycle, so effectively, this is the first full year of representation.

“I thought it was important to show gratitude to my constituents by helping them to fish rather than giving them fish. All these items can be used to generate income,” he said.

Earlier, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa commended Senator Adegbonmire for his laudable initiative of giving back to the people who entrusted him with their mandate to represent them at the National Assembly.

Represented by his Special Adviser on Legislative Matters, Babatunde Kolawole, the Ondo governor said the present administration believes that, in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, good governance must touch lives in meaningful ways.

Aiyedatiwa noted that programmes that create livelihood opportunities, enhance self-reliance, and prepare citizens for competitiveness align with this vision, adding that the initiative underscores a shared resolve to build a society where progress is inclusive.

On his part, the Chairman of APC in the state, Engr Ade Adetimehin, said that the senator had distinguished himself beyond the traditional roles expected of a federal lawmaker.

Adetimehin stressed that although legislators do not control federal funds, Adegbonmire has demonstrated rare commitment to delivering tangible benefits to his constituents.

“It is evident that the senator has done amazingly well. The duty of a legislator is to make laws and provide oversight, but Senator Adegbonmire has gone far beyond that. Today, we have a Federal Teaching Hospital because of his efforts,” the APC chairman said.

Adetimehin added that the senator’s commitment was inspired by the legacy of his father, the late High Chief Wunmi Adegbonmire, whom he described as a mentor and role model.

He noted that the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, had on multiple occasions praised Adegbonmire’s intellect and legislative competence.

Also, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Ogunlade Aladelusi, applauded the senator, saying he had shown uncommon commitment to service.

“If he wants to do something, he will make sure he does it right. This is not just empowerment; it is mega empowerment. The items on display show that this is real and impactful,” the monarch said.

Mimiko calls for stronger laws to reduce maternal mortality, protect women’s rights

Former Governor of Ondo State, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, has urged the federal government to enact stronger laws and policies to curb preventable maternal deaths, describing maternal mortality as a violation of human rights.

Delivering the keynote address at the 2025 International Federation of Female Lawyers (FIDA) Week in Akure, Mimiko stressed the need for civil society and non-governmental organisations to hold governments accountable in translating policies into concrete actions that protect women.

Speaking on the theme, “Turning Policy to Action: Advancing Women’s Rights through Law and Governance,” he underscored the importance of judicial and social activism, referencing global trends in the enforcement of economic, social, and cultural rights, including health.

Mimiko also condemned the practice of detaining women or newborns over unpaid medical bills and reiterated that Nigeria must domesticate international covenants such as CEDAW and the Maputo Protocol to ensure effective legal enforcement.

“The global trend in many jurisdictions, even those like Nigeria without explicit provisions, is a jurisprudential shift towards justiciability of Economic, Social, and Cultural (ESC) rights, including health.

“The death of our women while trying to bring forth life in childbirth or the outrageous practice of holding them or their newborn babies as ‘collateral’ for unsettled medical bills must be ended,” the former governor said.

While acknowledging some progress, he noted gaps in implementation, including seven states yet to adopt the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act 2015 (VAPP Act), and urged support for targeted legislation like the Reserved Seats for Women Bill.

He praised Rwanda’s strides in women’s parliamentary representation, urging Nigeria to follow suit.

Mimiko also raised the alarm over rising sexual and gender-based violence, calling it a “pandemic within a pandemic” and advocating for timely prosecution, stiffer penalties, victim compensation, and a publicly accessible sex-offenders register.

He called on FIDA to champion strategic litigation on women’s rights, including maternal mortality and SGBV cases, stating, “Policy must become action, and action must deliver justice and dignity for every woman and girl.”

Remarking, the state chairperson of FIDA, Barrister Bolanle Olafunmiloye, echoed the call for increased female participation in leadership, urging women to confront corruption, drug abuse, and moral decay in society.

Also, a FIDA member and former presidential aspirant of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) highlighted the transformative role of women lawyers in leadership positions both locally and globally.

NMA hails Afe Babalola over investments

Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has lauded the Founder and Chancellor of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola, for what it described as his outstanding contributions to health care delivery and medical education in the country.

The first NMA Vice-President, Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, gave the commendation when he led an eight-member delegation to ABUAD on a courtesy visit.

Olowojebutu said he was overwhelmed by the scale of investments at the 400-bed ABUAD Multi-System Hospital, the Industrial Park, the Independent Power Plant and the ABUAD Enterprise Farms, describing the facilities as uncommon achievements by an individual.

He noted that the Multi-System Hospital, widely regarded by experts as one of the most well-equipped in Sub-Saharan Africa, had continued to raise the bar in the provision of modern medical services.

According to him, the presence of two functional MRI machines, a dialysis centre with affordable charges and an in-house oxygen plant demonstrated the university’s commitment to excellence.

The NMA chief said he was particularly moved by the fact that Babalola, who had never held a political office, chose to situate the massive development in Ado-Ekiti, rather than in bigger cities, stressing that the decision had placed the state prominently on the global map.

“We are proud of what we have seen here today. What Aare Babalola has done is for humanity, and it deserves to be promoted and supported at all levels,” he said.

Responding, Babalola thanked the NMA leadership for the visit and reflected on the decline in national standards, compared to the early post-independence era.

He said the success of ABUAD was inspired by his desire to institutionalise quality, functional education despite having stopped formal schooling at Standard VI.

He added that the university’s vision had been validated by its ranking among the world’s top 100 universities in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, where it also maintained its position as Nigeria’s best university for four consecutive years.

The elder statesman urged wealthy Nigerians to invest in education and health, saying even small acts of kindness could change lives.

Lagos advances economic planning, blue economy transition at 2025 roundtable

The Lagos State Government has reinforced its strategic economic planning framework with the hosting of the 3rd Economic Roundtable, convened to refine policy direction and unlock emerging sectors for inclusive and sustainable growth.

The event, held in Lagos with the theme “Building Forward: Unlocking Emerging Sectors for an Inclusive, Resilient, and Prosperous Lagos Economy,” focused on the state’s economic outlook and sectoral priorities for 2026 and beyond.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, Olayinka Ojo, said the forum underscores Lagos’ commitment to evidence-based planning, responsible governance, and shared development.

She stressed that the state’s resilience as Nigeria’s commercial capital is sustained through deliberate planning and strong sectoral collaboration.

According to her, insights from the roundtable will directly inform the State’s Medium-Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), the 2026 budget, and strategic reforms under the THEMES+ agenda.

She noted that the government cannot drive economic transformation alone and called for deeper collaboration with the private sector, academia, civil society, and development partners to ensure inclusive growth and human capital development.

In his keynote address, Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Mr. Ope George, said Lagos is at a defining stage in its economic evolution and must embrace smarter, innovative, and adaptive planning models.

He explained that the roundtable provides an opportunity to review the State’s 2025 performance, identify improvement areas, and align investments with demographic expansion, climate risks, and global economic shifts.

George highlighted key focus areas for discussion, including urban regeneration, expansion of the creative economy, development of water transportation, and sectoral reforms aimed at positioning Lagos as Africa’s leading sub-national economic hub.

He reaffirmed the State Government’s commitment to data-driven decision-making and collaborative development to ensure progress is felt by every Lagos resident.

Also speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Blue Economy, Emmanuel Damilola, said Lagos is making unprecedented investments in modernizing water transportation infrastructure under the Omi-Eko initiative.

He noted that the goal is not to eliminate road traffic, but to decongest it by offering efficient alternatives through rail and waterways.

According to him, the project is anchored on clean mobility, climate adaptation, and economic connectivity, with over 75 hybrid or fully electric ferries, 15 active routes, and 25 upgraded terminals planned for deployment.

He added that the Omi-Eko initiative is supported by strong international financing, including a €110 million EU-funded grant, the largest of its kind globally, alongside counterpart funding by Lagos and private sector investment through the Intelligent Ticketing System.

Damilola stated that the project is expected to move 20–30 million passengers annually, reduce CO₂ emissions by over 41,000 tonnes, support waterfront commerce, generate thousands of jobs, and improve access for riverine communities.

He also emphasised that informal operators, who make up about 90% of the sector, are being fully integrated through transition support, inclusion programmes, and continuous community engagement.

The roundtable panel of discussion involving the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Oluyinka Olumide, Prof. Olufemi Shuaib, UNILAG; CEO, Chocolate City, Mr. Abuchi Peter Ugwu; Professor of Geography with specialisation in Transportation, Logistics & Spatial Planning, UNILAG, Prof. Samuel Oni; Dr. Amina Olohunlana, UNILAG, with renewed commitments from key stakeholders to accelerate Lagos’ economic transformation through innovation, infrastructure expansion, sustainability, and social equity.

The deliberations are expected to shape policy outcomes that will drive a more inclusive, resilient, and prosperous Lagos in the coming decade.
