193,000 PVCs yet-to-be collected in Kwara, says INEC

Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Kwara State has decried poor response of the people to the collection of permanent voter cards (PVCs).

The commission said from 2011 to 2019, it had 233, 856 uncollected PVCs, adding that “out of this, only 20,752 were collected as at October this year, leaving over 193,000 uncollected.

“Of the 46,602 new PVCs received from the INEC headquarters, only 18,885 have been collected, with a balance of 27,602 awaiting collection.

“We are still having a lot of challenges in the state in terms of PVCs collection,” Resident Electoral Commission (REC) Attahiru Madami has said.

He spoke yesterday in Ilorin at a stakeholders’ meeting ahead of the 2023 general election.

On incident PVCs collection, Madami said the state had 20,506, adding that only 6,055 had so far been collected, with 14,451 yet to be collected.

He said the state had 43,008 invalid registration figures, one of the least, according to him, in the country.

The REC said the state had 1,689,288 registration figures, as opposed to 1,401,895 in 2019.

“Completed registration figures are 330,401 and valid registration figures are 287,393,” he said.

Police Commissioner Paul Odama warned politicians not to “feed” their supporters with hard drugs.

He said: “Politicians should do well to embark on issue-based campaigns and not personality-based campaigns. They should ensure their followers are civil in their actions. They should shun thuggery and damage to billboards of opposing parties.

“As enshrined in the Electoral Law, vote-buying and selling will not be allowed.

“We will do all within our power to support and collaborate with stakeholders to ensure our democracy is rooted in the country.

“Finally, the police and other security agents have, at different times, strategised on how the elections will be free and credible.”

Arewa community in the Southwest has engaged stakeholders in Osun and Ekiti states to galvanise votes for the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in the 2023 general election.

They said the emergence of Sen. Ademola Adeleke of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the Osun State governor would not affect the winning chance of Asiwaju Tinubu, adding that the APC presidential candidate should expect massive votes from their members in the Southwest and Nigeria.

The Chairman of APC Southwest Arewa community, Alhaji Sa’adu Dandare, in a statement he issued after a meeting with Arewa community in Osun and Ekiti states, said issues affecting the party in Osun State, which led to their loss to the PDP in the governorship poll, will be addressed if Tinubu is elected.

“Since you became governor, we have seen tremendous changes and development in the state of our infrastructure in Yewaland. You are a man of your words. What you promised to do, you have done. Your success at the polls in 2023 is a done deal. We are with you,” he said.

Govt can engage us for surveillance security – Senior Citizens

RATHER than have them sit at home and waste away, the government can engage senior citizens in the area of surveillance security. This will help combat growing insecurity and enhance peace across board.

This much was stated by the National President of the Senior Citizens’ Association of Nigeria (SCAN), Elder Joseph Kayode Taiwo, as the group gathered to celebrate recently at the Lagos State Leisure Park Ikorodu, Lagos.

“Government can use us as security surveillance. We sit down at home while others go to work, we know what’s happening around. So, if they empower us with phones and other necessary gadgets, whenever we see any strange movement, we’ll call the police or the appropriate authority,” he said.

The occasion, which was aptly tagged: ‘Fun at Ikorodu,’ coincided with Nigeria’s independence Anniversary, and had their family members, members of the press, security personnel, amongst others in attendance amidst lots of music, food and drinks.

A major highlight of the event was the endless rendition of evergreen music from yesteryears, with the senior citizens strutting their stuff on the dance floor.
